Umatilla Russet, a moderately late maturing variety especially suitable for frozen French fry processing but also acceptable for tablestock use (boiling, and baking), was jointly released by the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Oregon, Idaho, and Washington and the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1998. Umatilla Russet was evaluated in irrigated trials in Oregon from 1988 to 1997, and in western regional trials from 1989 to 1991. Total yields were similar to those of Russet Burbank, but Umatilla Russet produced higher marketable yields. In three years of regional trials at up to 13 locations in seven western states, Umatilla Russet averaged 40.5 Mg/ha compared with 32.4 Mg/ha for Russet. Burbank. Umatilla Russet fry color and specific gravity are consistently equal to or better than for Russet Burbank. Umatilla Russet is less susceptible toVerticillium wilt than Russet Norkotah, less susceptible to net necrosis than Russet Burbank, and resistant to PVX. It is susceptible to PLRV and expresses foliar symptoms of PVY more clearly than Russet Norkotah. Umatilla Russet is less susceptible to tuber infection and decay caused byPhytophthora infestans than Ranger Russet and Russet Norkotah. Russet Legend has consistently achieved lighter fry color and higher specific gravity than Russet Burbank. Russet Legend is less susceptible toVerticillium wilt than Russet Burbank or Russet Norkotah. It is susceptible to PLRV and net necrosis, and expresses PVY foliar symptoms clearly. Russet Legend is less susceptible to tuber infection and decay caused byPhytophthora infestans than Ranger Russet and Russet Norkotah. The Agricultural Experiment Stations of Oregon, Idaho, and Washington and the U.S. Department of Agriculture jointly released Wallowa Russet in 2002. This late maturing variety is most suitable for frozen french fry use, but may find limited fresh market potential because of outstanding flavor and texture when baked. Wallowa Russet was evaluated as AO87277-6 in Oregon irrigated trials from 1993 through 1999, and in western regional trials from 1997 through 1999. Averaged over 13 locations in seven states, Wallowa Russet produced total yields of 55.6 mt/ha compared to 53.5 and 45.7 mt/ha for Russet Burbank and Russet Norkotah, respectively, and U.S. No.1 yields of 44.4 mt/ha compared to 30.7 and 36.0 mt/ha for Russet Burbank and Russet Norkotah. Specific gravity is consistently higher for Walowa Russet than for Russet Burbank and fry color is as light or lighter; sugar end development is less than that observed in Russet Burbank. Wallowa Russet is similar to Russet Burbank in susceptibility toVerticillium wilt, foliar early blight (Alternaria solani), and potato leafroll virus (PLRV). However, Wallowa Russet develops less net necrosis than Russet Burbank from PLRV infection. Wallowa Russet is more susceptible to common scab (Streptomyces scabies) than Russet Burbank. It has moderate resistance to potato virus Y (PVY). Tubers of Wallowa Russet are less susceptible to tuber infection and decay caused by potato late blight (Phytophthora infestans) than Russet Norkotah and Ranger Russet. Wallowa Russet has less hollow heart, brown center, blackspot bruise, and fewer growth cracks than Russet Burbank but is more susceptible to shatter bruise. Vitamin C is higher for Wallowa Russet (30.4 mg/100 g fresh weight) than for Russet Burbank (21.9) or Russet Norkotah (22.0), and protein content averaged 5.6% compared to 4.7% and 4.9% for Russet Burbank and Russet Norkotah, respectively.  相似文献

Century Russet, a high-yielding, late-maturing variety suitable for fresh tablestock use, was jointly released in 1995 by Agricultural Experiment Stations in Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Colorado, California, and Texas and the USDA Agricultural Research Service. Extremely high yields have been observed for Century Russet in variety trials conducted in Oregon and throughout the western United States under a wide range of soil and climatic conditions. Century Russet produced 40 percent higher marketable yields than Russet Burbank and 67 percent higher marketable yields than Russet Norkotah in 11 regional trials conducted over a three-year period in sevenwestern states. Uniform tuber shape, high yields of count carton sizes, and attractive tuber appearance make Century Russet well suited for the fresh market industry. It is not recommended for chipping or processing into frozen products because of low solids and dark fry color. Century Russet is highly resistant toVerticillium wilt and consistently develops less hollow heart, brown center, and other internal defects than Russet Burbank. It requires more time between vine kill and harvest than Russet Burbank for adequate tuber maturity and skin set. Bruised Century Russet tubers are susceptible to early blight andFusarium infection.  相似文献

Russet Nugget is an oblong, smooth, high yielding potato with fresh market and processing qualities. It emerges quickly, produces an erect, large, vigorous vine with a profusion of white flowers, and is late maturing. Russet Nugget is very resistant to common scab, and moderately resistant to leafroll net necrosis,Vertcillium wilt, and early blight (tuber and foliage). In the San Luis Valley of Colorado, yield of Russet Nugget is comparable to Russet Burbank, with a significantly greater percentage of U.S. No. 1 tubers. In Texas, total yield is comparable to Norgold 40, with a slightly lower percentage of U.S. No. 1 tubers. Tubers of Russet Nugget have high specific gravity and vitamin C content.  相似文献

‘Alturas’, a late-maturing, high-yielding, russet potato cultivar with high tuber specific gravity, was released in 2002 by the USDA-ARS and the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Originally selected for dehydration processing, its cold-sweetening resistance also makes it suitable for processing out of storage into french fries and other frozen potato products. Culinary quality is high, with larger tubers suitable for fresh market if heavily russeted skin is not essential. Alturas consistently produced greater total and U.S. No. 1 yields than ‘Russet Burbank’ and ‘Ranger Russet’ in southern Idaho trials. Across other western trial sites, total yields of Alturas have on average been 29% and 14% greater than Russet Burbank and Ranger Russet, respectively. Alturas is resistant to Verticillium wilt (Verticillium dahliae) and early blight (Alternaria solani). Compared with Russet Burbank and Ranger Russet, Alturas is less susceptible to corky ringspot and foliar and tuber infection by late blight (Phytophthora infestans). It also is less susceptible to tuber net necrosis and Fusarium dry rot than Russet Burbank, and is more resistant to common scab (Streptomyces scabies) than Ranger Russet. However, Alturas is more susceptible to infection by PVY and PVX than Ranger Russet. Total nitrogen application recommendations for Alturas are approximately 40% less than those for Russet Burbank. Alturas requires 15% to 20% more water during the growing season than does Russet Bur-bank.  相似文献

Because quantitative field estimates of potato (Solarium tuberosum L.) yield losses attributable to ozone (O3) air pollution damage in California need to be assessed, the antioxidant compound N-[-2-(2-oxo-l-imidazolidiny l)ethyl]-N′-phenylurea (EDU or DPX-4891) was evaluated for suitability in estimating these yield losses and in differentiating O3-susceptible from O3-resistant cultivars. Differential susceptibility of two cultivars, ‘Centennial Russet’ (O3sensitive) and ‘White Rose’ (O3-resistant), to O3 was confirmed in greenhouse experiments. Five weekly 5-hour treatments with 25 parts per hundred million O3 reduced tuber yield of Centennial Russet by 32% but did not reduce the yield of White Rose. In the absence of O3 under greenhouse conditions, EDU had no observable effect on shoot dry weight, tuber number, or tuber yield of either cultivar, suggesting that EDU does not materially affect plant growth in the absence of O3 at the treatment levels used and under the conditions herein. In field experiments conducted at the University of California at Riverside (UCR) and in commercial fields of Kern County (KC), untreated Centennial Russet and White Rose plants produced total tuber yields of 174 and 512 q/ha, respectively at UCR and 268 and 498 q/ha, respectively, at KC. At UCR, EDU applied at the highest rate—17.8 kg/ha—increased marketable and total tuber yields of Centennial Russet by 208 and 188 q/ha, respectively, and increased specific gravity by 0.013. White Rose was not affected by EDU. Averaged over four KC experiments, EDU application at 8.9 kg/ha increased Centennial Russet marketable and total tuber yields by 40 (from 214) and 45 (from 268) q/ha, respectively, whereas White Rose was not affected and averaged 398 (marketable) and 491 (total) q/ha.  相似文献

Teton Russet is an early-maturing, medium-russeted, potato cultivar with high merit for both fresh-pack and processing. In early harvest trials in the Pacific Northwest, Teton Russet had total yields similar to Russet Norkotah, and higher than Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank. Marketable yield of Teton Russet in the early harvest trials was also comparable to or higher than Russet Norkotah in Washington and Oregon, and higher than Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank at these sites, as well as in Idaho. In full-season trials, while total yield of the earlier-maturing Teton Russet tended to be lower than Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank, marketable yield was generally higher than Russet Burbank across the majority of sites due to its higher percentage of U.S. No. 1 tubers. Teton Russet is suitable for processing, with acceptable fry color following up to 8 months of storage at 8.9 °C. Uniformity of fry color was also very consistent. Teton Russet has shown lower levels of the amino acid asparagine relative to Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank which may contribute to lower acrylamide levels in French fries and other processed potato products. Teton Russet is notable for having resistance to common scab (Streptomyces spp.) and Fusarium dry rot, and is moderately resistant to tuber net necrosis. Analyses have also shown Teton Russet to have significantly higher protein levels than Russet Norkotah, Ranger Russet, and Russet Burbank, as well as higher vitamin C content than Russet Norkotah and Russet Burbank. Teton Russet was released in 2011 by the USDA-ARS and the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, and is a product of the Pacific Northwest Potato Variety (Tri-State) Development Program.  相似文献

Ranger Russet, a new full-season potato variety, was jointly released to growers by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado on May 14, 1991. Ranger Russet was tested in irrigated performance trials in the Western U.S. since 1979. It produces a large yield of high quality, long, russet-skinned tubers that are well suited for baking and processing into french fries. Ranger Russet is more resistant than Russet Burbank to Verticillium wilt, viruses X and Y, leafroll net necrosis, and Fusarium dry rot. It is highly resistant to hollow heart.  相似文献

Potato varieties Russet Burbank and Ranger Russet were transformed with a cDNA version of the 23 kD coat protein cistron (CP) of the potato leafroll virus (PLRV) using anAgrobacterium-mediated procedure. Clones were assayed for presence of thenpt- II and CP genes by Southern analysis, for expression of CP mRNA by Northern analysis, and for presence of PLRV coat protein in uninoculated and aphid inoculated plants by ELISA and Western blot analysis in uninoculated plants. Two putative Russet Burbank transformants were escapes, lacking eithernptll or CP, while one putative Ranger Russet transformant possessed thenpt- II gene but not the CP gene. In Russet Burbank and Ranger Russet, some transformants had statistically lower virus titer. The lowered titer was consistent throughout assays at three times during primary infection and one assay of secondary infection. The ranking of virus titer across all tests was statistically consistent. Transformants with the lowest secondary titers had virus contents 15 and 31 % of the titers of untransformed controls for Russet Burbank and Ranger Russet, respectively. The virus titer of the two Russet Burbank escapes and the Ranger Russet with only thenpt- II gene did not differ significantly from their respective untransformed controls.  相似文献

Klamath Russet, a late-maturing cultivar for fresh market use, was jointly released by the Agricultural Experiment Stations of Oregon, Idaho, and Washington and the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2000. Klamath Russet was tested in irrigated trials in Oregon from 1990 to 1999 and in Western Regional Trials from 1994 to 1996. Klamath Russet yields of U.S. #ls have exceeded those for Russet Burbank and Russet Norkotah by more than 30%, averaged across all trials. Klamath Russet is moderately resistant to Verticillium wilt and highly resistant to common scab. Specific gravity for Klamath Russet has averaged 1.076 across all trials compared with 1.070 and 1.081 for Russet Norkotah and Russet Burbank, respectively. Klamath Russet is not considered suitable for french fry production because of high sugar and low starch contents.  相似文献

Potato breeding selection B0169-56 is being released by the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service as germplasm that is highly resistant toVerticillium albo-atrum Reinke & Berthier andV. dahliae Kleb. In five years of field testing in the Verticillium wilt plot in Presque Isle, Maine, the level of resistance as measured by symptom severity is equal to that of Russette. In 1993, in plots inoculated with both species ofVerticillium, there was a 15,27 and 62% yield reduction for B0169-56, Russette, and Superior, respectively. After four years of evaluation in yield and processing trials in Presque Isle, Maine, B0169-56 has yielded and fried as well as Russet Burbank. Tubers are russet-skinned, oblong to long and cylindrical. Tubers of B0169-56 size early, a necessary quality for an eastern russet. It is both female and male fertile. This selection is currently undergoing further evaluation at multiple state locations for possible commercialization. Seed is available from the USDA/ARS, Beltsville, Maryland.  相似文献

The Allagash Russet potato is an early to mid-season variety with oblong, attractive, uniformly-russeted tubers. Resistance of tubers to skinning and bruising during handling, and slow sugar build-up in cold storage are two advantages of this all-purpose potato. Coastal Russet (tested as B9596-2) is a clone with mid-season maturity that produces russet skin tubers that are long and slightly flattened. Tuber yields in the eastern portions of the United States have been considerably greater than for BelRus. Tubers are well-shaped, have shallow eyes, and are attractive in appearance. Tuber appearance and size make this cultivar very well suited for the tablestock market. It is not suitable for processing. Coastal Russet is highly resistant to tuber net necrosis caused by late current season infection with leafroll and is tolerant to common scab.  相似文献

Field studies conducted over a 5 yr period to compare the effect of continuous cropping of several potato clones (Butte, Russet Burbank, Targhee, A66107-51, and A68113-4) showed Butte to be highly resistant toPratylenchus neglectus while being highly susceptible toVerticillium dahliae. This was further evidenced during the 6th yr when Russet Burbank was cropped over all plot-locations. Populations ofP. neglectus were shown to be significantly less (0.05 P) in both soil and roots when Russet Burbank was grown over sites previously cropped with the Butte potato than over site-locations cropped by either Russet Burbank, Targhee, A66107–51, or A68113–4. Additional field and greenhouse studies corroborated the high degree of resistance of Butte toPratylenchus spp. In addition toP. neglectus resistance, a greenhouse investigation also showed resistance to P. penetrans. A field study designed to compare the effects of Butte with nematicides showed that Butte reducedP. neglectus populations in both soil and roots when compared with Russet Burbank. This degree of reduction was equivalent to the effects of either of two systemic nematicides (aldicarb and isofenphos) at 3.4 to 4.0 kg a.i./ha, respectively. Results demonstrate biological control with the Butte potato clone forP. neglectus suppression. Although populations ofP. neglectus were reduced by either nematicides or Butte, wilt severity was higher with Butte than Russet Burbank. Results showed wilt suppression andP. neglectus reduction with treatments of either nematicide, while having no significant effect on the colonization of potato stems byV. dahliae.  相似文献

Reveille Russet (ATX91137-1Ru) is a uniform, medium-early, high yielding, high pack-out, fresh market russet cultivar, with wide adaptability, released by Texas A&M AgriLife Research in 2015. It resulted from a cross of Bannock Russet(♀) and breeding clone A8343–12(♂). Reveille Russet produces attractive, oblong tubers, with medium russeting, white flesh and excellent culinary qualities. It has a lower incidence of internal defects and a higher percentage of marketable tubers in the 170 to 284 g and 284 to 510 g (6 to 10 oz. and 10 to 18 oz.) size classes than Russet Norkotah. Reveille Russet is resistant to hollow heart, second growth and blackspot bruise. It also stores longer and tends to wound-heal to a lighter brown color upon skinning during harvest and/or handling than Russet Norkotah.  相似文献

Krantz is an oblong to slightly blocky, russet-skinned potato cultivar with medium-late maturity and a vigorous vine. It is resistant to hollow heart, has high resistance to common scab and possesses high field resistance to late blight. It is moderately resistant toVerticillium wilt, susceptible to early blight, viruses S and X, and exhibits symptoms of bacterial ring rot. ‘BUTTE’, a new long russet potato variety, was released by the Agricultural Research Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture and the Idaho, Oregon, and Washington Agricultural Experiment Stations in April, 1977. Its tubers are similar to those of ‘Russet Burbank’ but BUTTE offers several advantages to growers and processors. BUTTE has averaged 7% more total yield and 25% more U.S. No. 1’s than Russet Burbank over 51 location-years of testing across southern Idaho, eastern Oregon, and in the Columbia Basin. Its specific gravity in these trials averaged .004 higher than that of Russet Burbank. Dehydrating quality of BUTTE is superior to that of Russet Burbank and the product has longer shelf life. BUTTE french fries well although it accumulates slightly more sugars in storage than does Russet Burbank. Its vitamin C content has averaged 58% higher and protein content 20% higher than that of Russet Burbank. BUTTE is hypersensitive to virus X and resistant to net necrosis. Other disease reactions are similar to those of Russet Burbank.  相似文献
