Pattern of Cryptosporidium oocyst shedding in relation to age and season was investigated monthly from May 1999 to April 2000 in three groups (24 goats per group) of naturally infected goats (from 1 month of age). The three groups designated 1, 2 and 3 were studied for 12, 6 and 3 months, respectively. An association between Cryptosporidium oocyst counts and age was demonstrated. In Group 1, oocyst excretion in the first, second and fourth months of age were significantly higher than that in 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 months of age (p<0.01), whereas in Group 2, oocyst excretion in the first month of age was significantly higher than that in 2, 4, 5 and 6 months of age (p<0.01). The 3-month observations made in Group 3 showed high oocyst excretion during 1 and 3 months of age. The mean maximum count for Group 1 was 592 oocyst per gram of feces when the animals were 2 months old, while in Groups 2 and 3, this was observed at 3 months of age and the oocyst counts were 787 and 520, respectively. A close association between the prevalence of the Cryptosporidium infection and age of the animal was also observed (p<0.01). At least one-third of the Group 1 animals were excreting Cryptosporidium oocysts during the first 5 months of age. Goats excreted Cryptosporidium oocysts irrespective of the dry or rainy season. The long periods of Cryptosporidium oocyst shedding by goats may have implications for the epidemiology of the disease in susceptible hosts.  相似文献

Faecal samples from 224 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and 381 wild boars (Sus scrofa) shot during the 2008-2009 hunting season (August-January) in Galicia (NW Spain) were examined to determine the presence and intensity of infection by Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Analysis of a single sample from each of the roe deer revealed that the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis and giardiosis was 1.3% and 5.3% respectively. The prevalence of Giardia infection was significantly higher in juvenile female roe deer than in adult females, but no other significant differences were found in relation to age and sex. In wild boars, the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis and giardiosis was 7.6% and 1.3% respectively. The prevalence of Cryptosporidium infection was significantly higher in juvenile male wild boars than in adult males, but no other significant differences were found in relation to age or sex. In both groups of wild animals, the number of Cryptosporidium oocysts per gram of faeces (OPG) ranged from 5 to 200 and the number of Giardia cysts per gram of faeces (CPG) was between 5 and 47; there were no significant differences between the two groups with respect to number of infections. This is the first large study of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in roe deer and wild boars in hunting areas in Spain and the results demonstrate a low, but widespread prevalence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in these animals.  相似文献

A longitudinal survey was undertaken on an open farm to investigate the occurrence of Cryptosporidium species infection in orphan lambs obtained from three local flocks. During an initial pilot study, Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected by a fluorescent antibody test (fat) in the faeces of two of 21 lambs aged between one and three weeks derived from one flock (flock A). Pooled pen samples of faeces were collected weekly from lambs derived from each flock; oocysts were detected by fat in 24 (49.0 per cent) of 49 samples from lambs from flock A, 18 (30.5 per cent) of 59 samples from lambs from flock B and 14 (29.8 per cent) of 47 samples from lambs from flock C. Oocyst counts of 1 x 10(3) to more than 2 x 10(6) per gram of faeces were detected in lambs up to 12 weeks old, with the peak counts occurring at six weeks of age in the lambs from flocks A and B and at four weeks of age in those from flock C. The oocysts were confirmed by molecular analysis as Cryptosporidium parvum. Virtually all the infections were subclinical.  相似文献

A study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of Giardia infections in dairy calves and to compare Giardia and Cryptosporidium infections in calves of different ages. Fresh fecal samples were collected from 386 male and female Holstein calves (newborn to 24 wk) in 20 dairies located in the lower Fraser river valley area of British Columbia. Giardia intestinalis, Cryptosporidium parvum, and Cryptosporidium muris were enumerated in each sample after concentration by sucrose gradient centrifugation and immunofluorescent staining. Giardia was identified at all farm locations. The overall prevalence of Giardia in calves was 73% with a geometric mean cyst count of 1180 cysts per gram of feces (CI, 41 to 5014). Cryptosporidium parvum and C. muris were identified in 80% and 40% of the farms, respectively. The prevalence of C. parvum was 59%, and the geometric mean for oocysts was 457 oocysts per gram of feces (CI, 18 to 160). The prevalence of C. muris was only 2% and the mean oocyst counts were 54 oocysts per gram of feces. Giardiasis was not age dependent, and approximately 80% of the calves from 2 to 24 wk were infected. In contrast, C. parvum infections were predominant in calves 2 to 4 wk, while C. muris was demonstrated in calves older than 4 wk. Fourty-seven percent of calves with diarrhea had high numbers of Giardia cysts in their feces. Giardia infections are highly prevalent in dairy calves and should be considered in animals with diarrhea or failure to thrive.  相似文献

During the kidding season between January and April 2003, 10 farms were selected and divided into two groups of five. The farms in group A had had serious diarrhoeal illness and losses in neonatal kids the previous year, and there were Cryptosporidium parvum infections in kids associated with diarrhoea during the survey. On the farms in group B, there was no history of diarrhoeal disease the previous year and neither C parvum oocysts nor diarrhoea were detected in neonatal kids during the survey. Faecal samples were collected once from 10 adult goats aged between one and seven years on each farm. To assess more accurately the pattern of output of oocysts of C parvum and cysts of Giardia duodenalis by periparturient adult goats, one farm was selected from each group, faecal samples were collected weekly before and after kidding from 12 goats on the farm in group A and from 10 goats on the farm in group B. There was no significant difference in the prevalence of G duodenalis cysts between the group A farms (14 per cent) and the group B farms (12 per cent), and the numbers of cysts excreted ranged from 143 to 400 cysts per gram of faeces (cpg) on the group A farms and 72 to 334 cpg on the group B farms. There was a significant difference (P=0.03) in the prevalence of C parvum oocysts at the group level between the group A farms (20 per cent) and the group B farms (6 per cent). All the adult goats excreted cysts and oocysts at some date around the kidding period; the number of animals excreting cysts of G duodenalis or oocysts of C parvum increased when they gave birth, and seven to 10 times more cysts and oocysts were shed in the three weeks around kidding than in the period more than three weeks from kidding (P<0.001).  相似文献

A survey on coccidial infections in goats from central Spain was carried out. Fifty-five goat farms from 28 localities belonging to the three bioclimatic subregions of the area were visited. Individual samples (702) were obtained from the rectum of 130 young (under 1 year of age) and adult (572 over 1 year of age) goats. Coproscopical analyses showed a 100% prevalence and a moderate average intensity (7606.48 +/- 17918.78 Eimeria oocysts per gram of faeces), although wide variations were seen among herds and among individuals within each goat flock. Statistical analysis showed a strong age-related reduction in oocysts output in goats up to 4 years of age. The intensity of coccidial infections (young and adult goats, herds) was independent of the prevailing bioclimatic conditions. Heavier infections in young goats were found in bigger herds, whereas adult goats from these same big flocks (over 300 animals) showed the lowest oocyst output. Under our conditions, neither the female restocking rate nor the age structure seemed to play a significant role in the intensity of the Eimeria infections.  相似文献

The prevalence and numbers of coccidian oocysts in faecal samples from young (less than 6 months old), immature (6–12 months old) and adult (over 12 months old) sheep on 15 farms in Nyandarua district were studied during the dry and wet seasons. The species ofEimeria occuring in these sheep were also identified. The proportion of animals shedding coccidian oocysts did not vary significantly with season. The prevalence of the oocysts was significantly higher (p<0.05) in young sheep (mean 85.3%) compared to immature (mean 40.2%) and adult sheep (mean 32.15%). OPG counts (oocysts per gram of faeces) were significantly higher (p<0.01) in the young sheep compared to immature and adult sheep during both seasons. Prevalence and OPG did not differ between immature and adult sheep. There was no significant difference in OPG during the wet season (mean 328±997) compared to the dry season (mean 219±773). The sex of the sheep had no significant effect on prevalence or OPG. Eight species ofEimeria were recognized. They (and their prevalence) wereE. bakuensis (ovina) (43.6%),E. ovinoidalis (23.6%),E. ahsata (15.2%),E. intricata (8.27%),E. granulosa (4.8%),E. faurei (2.8%),E. parva (1.06%) andE. pallida (0.67%).Abbreviations OPG oocysts per gram of faeces  相似文献

Between January 1999 and December 2000 faecal samples from 16264 cattle at 12 dipping sites in the highveld and nine in the lowveld communal grazing areas of Zimbabwe were examined for gastrointestinal (GI) nematode and cestodes eggs, and coccidia oocysts. Strongyle larvae were identified following culture of pooled faecal samples collected at monthly intervals. The effects of region, age, sex and season on the prevalence of GI nematodes, cestodes and coccidia were determined. Faecal egg and oocyst counts showed an overall prevalence of GI nematodes of 43%, coccidia 19.8% and cestodes 4.8%. A significantly higher prevalence of infection with GI nematodes, cestodes and coccidia was recorded in calves (P < 0.01) than in adults. Pregnant and lactating cows had significantly higher prevalences than bulls, oxen and non-lactating (dry cows) (P < 0.01). The general trend of eggs per gram (epg) of faeces and oocysts per gram (opg) of faeces was associated with the rainfall pattern in the two regions, with high epg and opg being recorded during the wet months. The most prevalent genera of GI nematodes were Cooperia, Haemonchus and Trichostrongylus in that order. Strongyloides papillosus was found exclusively in calves. Haemonchus was significantly more prevalent during the wet season than the dry season (P < 0.01). In contrast, Trichostrongylus was present in significantly (P < 0.01) higher numbers during the dry months than the wet months, while Cooperia and Oesophagostomum revealed no significant differences between the wet and dry season. These findings are discussed with reference to their relevance for strategic control of GI parasites in cattle in communal grazing areas of Zimbabwe.  相似文献

A survey of Eimeria infections was performed in dairy goats and kids (<6 months old) of six farms from a dry desert area of Gran Canaria Island (Spain). The number of oocysts per gram of faeces (OPG) was determined by a modified McMaster technique over a total of 2,616 individual faecal samples taken from the rectum in monthly intervals. Eimeria oocysts were found in 96.1% of the samples with OPG ranging from 1 x 10(2) to 1.4 x 10(6). Kid goats had significantly (P < 0.001) higher OPG counts (46,496 +/- 5,228) than dairy females (2,225 +/- 287). Eight Eimeria species were identified, with Eimeria ninakohlyakimovae (30.0%), Eimeria arloingi (28.6%) and Eimeria alijevi (20.5%) being the most frequent species followed by Eimeria caprina (9.1%), Eimeria christenseni (4.5%), Eimeria jolchijevi (3.4%), Eimeria caprovina (3.2%) and Eimeria hirci (0.7%). Although significant differences were observed among goat groups and herds, the eight species were present in the six farms in both dairy goats and kids. The intensity of oocysts shedding was related to some factors such as the size of the herd and was further influenced by the prevailing climatic conditions of the area. The highest OPG counts were recorded during the hot season in dairy goats and close to weaning time in kids reared in small farms having no prophylactic treatments against eimeriosis.  相似文献

Coccidia of goats in Zimbabwe   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Faecal samples from goats were collected per rectum from February 1989 to January 1990. The numbers of oocysts per gram (OPG) of faeces were determined by the McMaster technique and identification of oocysts was made on sporulation. Infection was seen throughout the year, infecting on average 89.9% of 1092 adults and 94.0% of 151 kids. OPG of less than 1000 were found in 61.2% of adults and 43.3% of kids, whereas OPG of 1000-5000 were observed in 29.0% of adults and 34.6% of kids. Two kids showed over 10(6) OPG. Twelve species of Eimeria coccidia were identified. The percentage of animals harbouring different species were: E. alijevi and E. ninakohlyakimovae, 99%; E. hirci, 83.5%; E. arloingi, 80.6%; E. caprina, 77.6%; E. aspheronica, 64.8%; E. ahsata, 63%; E. christenseni 60%; E. granulosa, 42.8%; E. pallida, 6.2%; E. intricata, 2% E. punctata, 0.3%. Two percent of goats harboured three species, 5.6% four, 9.5% five, 26.3% six, 25.7% seven, 23.7% eight, 6.3% nine, 0.6% ten and 0.3% eleven species. E. alijevi was the most predominant species, followed by E. ninakohlyakimovae, E. ahsata, E. arloingi, E. granulosa, E. caprina, E. christenseni, E. hirci, E. aspheronica and E. pallida in decreasing order. E. intricata and E. punctata never showed predominance. All the species are reported from Zimbabwe for the first time.  相似文献

Coccidial oocysts were detected in 35% of 445 cattle in four medium-scale and 20 small-scale dairy farms in Morogoro municipality, Tanzania. The highest prevalence (56%) was observed in animals aged between 5 and 18 months, whereas lower prevalences were observed in calves (29%) aged between 12 days and 4 months and adults (30%). No coccidial oocysts were detected in calves less than 12 days old. The oocyst output was high in calves, followed by weaners; adults had the lowest oocyst output. The number of oocysts per gram of faeces was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in diarrhoeic animals than in non-diarrhoeic animals, and more so in young calves. Eimeria species infecting the animals included Eimeria bovis (68%) and Eimeria zuemii (57%), Eimeria ellipsoidalis (25%), Eimeria cylindrica (23%), Eimeria auburnensis (22%), Eimeria alabamensis (12%) and Eimeria subspherica (5%). Mixed infections involving two or three species were common. Our findings indicate that eimeriosis is common in cattle in Morogoro municipality.  相似文献

A survey of strongyle infections was conducted in sheep and goats reared in a traditional e extensive husbandry system in two ecological zones if Nigeria. One zone had a seasonal pattern of infection. The majority of animals had faecal worm parasite egg counts of below 500 eggs per gram. Kids, and lambs younger than 3 months did not carry strongyle worm burdens, and the highest infection rate was found in the 7–12 month age group. A high proportion of small ruminants shed strongyle eggs during the postparturient period. The helminth species found by the use of larval culture techniques on the faeces were: Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Oesophagostonum columbianum. Adults of the same species were found in the few animals necropsied. The significance of the findings is discussed.  相似文献

The prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. infection in a cross-sectional study of dairy cattle, from two contrasting dairying regions in Tanzania, were determined by staining smears of faecal samples with the modified Ziehl-Neelsen technique. Of the 1 126 faecal samples screened, 19.7% were positive for Cryptosporidium spp. The prevalence was lower in Tanga Region than in Iringa Region. The prevalence of affected farms was 20% in Tanga and 21% in Iringa. In both regions, the probability of detecting Cryptosporidium oocysts in faeces varied with animal class, but these were not consistent in both regions. In Tanga Region, Cryptosporidium oocysts were significantly more likely to be found in the faeces of milking cows. In Iringa Region, the likelihood that cattle had Cryptosporidium-positive faeces declined with age, and milking cattle were significantly less likely to have Cryptosporidium-positive faeces. In this region, 7% of cattle were housed within the family house at night, and this was marginally associated with a higher likelihood that animals had Cryptosporidium-positive faeces. Our study suggests that even though herd sizes are small, Cryptosporidium spp. are endemic on many Tanzanian smallholder dairy farms. These protozoa may impact on animal health and production, but also on human health, given the close associations between the cattle and their keepers. Further studies are required to assess these risks in more detail, and understand the epidemiology of Cryptosporidium spp. in this management system.  相似文献

A survey of the coccidia in domestic sheep and goats was undertaken to ascertain the type of Eimeria species and the number of different coccidial species in individual faecal samples. Simultaneously the prevalence and the oocyst output was investigated in 2234 sheep and 577 goats during a 12-month period. Eight Eimeria species were encountered in sheep: E. ahsata, E. crandallis, E. faurei, E. intricata, E. ovina, E. ovinoidalis, E. pallida and E. parva.

In goats the following species were found: E. ahsata, E. arloingi, E. christenseni, E. crandallis, E. faurei, E. intricata, E. ninakohlyakimovae and E. parva.

The prevalence in sheep was 94% and in goats 85%, multiple parasitism was the rule. No seasonal fluctuation was observed in the prevalence or oocyst output. The sheep and goats' oocyst output was moderate, the mean for both being in the range of 1000–5000 oocysts/g of faeces.  相似文献

An experimental study was carried out in neonatal goat kids to examine the infectivity of Cryptosporidium oocysts, pattern of oocyst shedding and morphological changes in the intestine during the infection. Cryptosporidium oocysts isolated from adult asymptomatic goats, and identified as C. parvum by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used in this study. Of three 4-day-old goat kids, two were orally infected with C. parvum oocysts (10(5) oocysts in 10 ml PBS/kid). One goat kid given 10 ml PBS only by the oral route served as a control. Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected in the faeces of one infected kid on day 3 post-inoculation (pi) whereas in the other 6 days pi. The faecal oocyst counts gradually increased and the peak counts in the two kids were 2 x 10(6)g(-1) (on day 12 pi) and 3.2 x 10(6)g(-1) (on day 14 pi). The increase in faecal oocyst output coincided with diarrhoea in an infected kid from days 10-17 pi. Although the oocyst excretion declined gradually after the peak, both infected kids excreted oocysts until euthanized on days 20 and 22 pi. Light and scanning electron microscopic investigations of the ileum revealed the endogenous stages on the brush border of the enterocytes, infiltration of neutrophils and mononuclear cells into the lamina propria, atrophy, stunting and fusion of villi. For purposes of comparison, goat Cryptosporidium oocysts were inoculated orally (10(3) oocysts/mouse) to eight, 1-week-old mice. All experimental mice excreted oocysts from day 3 pi, and four infected mice continued to excrete oocysts up to day 42 pi. The experimental infection described in goat kids resembled the natural disease in terms of oocyst excretion, clinical signs and intestinal pathology. The ability of oocysts excreted by asymptomatic goats, to infect goat kids and mice is likely to have a major impact on the epidemiology of cryptosporidiosis in livestock and man.  相似文献

AIM: To investigate the prevalence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium spp in calves born during two spring-calving seasons in a rapidly intensifying dairying region in the South Island; to evaluate potential correlations between the prevalence of the organism and age, characteristics of faeces, and animal-housing practices; and to compare the results with those from established dairying regions in the North Island. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted in 2005 and 2006 on 10 dairy farms located in the Otago region, South Island, New Zealand. A total of 1,190 faecal samples were collected from calves 1-7 weeks old. Direct immunofluorescent microscopy was used to screen the faecal samples for Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts. The prevalence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium spp detected in calves in Otago was compared with that previously measured in calves from dairying regions in the Waikato and Manawatu, in the North Island . RESULTS: On average, Giardia and Cryptosporidium spp were detected in 31% and 2.6% of all samples, respectively. The prevalence of Giardia spp cysts in faeces was higher in calves >or=3 weeks of age in 2005 (por=2 weeks of age in 2006 (p=0.07) than in younger calves. No age-related pattern was observed for Cryptosporidium spp in either year. No correlations were evident between characteristics of faeces or animal housing practices and the prevalence of either organism, which did not differ between the two dairy farming regions. CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence rates of Giardia and Cryptosporidium spp in calves 1-7 weeks old did not differ between the two geographical regions, nor did the regions' distinct climate conditions appear to influence the prevalence of either pathogen. Considering data from both years together, the presence of Giardia spp cysts in faeces appeared to increase in the first week or two after birth, so that, on average, 30-40% of animals from 3-6 weeks of age were affected. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This is the first study to report the prevalence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium spp in dairy calves in the South Island of New Zealand.  相似文献

Helminths cause great economic loss in livestock in Africa, and can be categorized as either direct or indirect losses. Arid and semi-arid lands (ASAL) in Kenya comprise 71% of total land area and harbour the largest population of cattle, sheep and goats. However, little information on the distribution and impact of gastro-intestinal (GIT) parasitism in these animals is available. This survey was conducted to establish the prevalence of GIT parasites infecting calves, sheep and goats and their relative importance in Magadi division, which is semi-arid. Faecal samples were obtained directly from the rectum of 109 calves, 133 goats and 20 sheep and submitted to the laboratory for faecal worm egg counts, and coccidial oocysts examination using a modified McMaster method. The significance of differences in mean egg count per gram (epg) between animal species and herds (farms) were assessed using analysis of variance. The overall prevalence of nematodes in the calves, sheep and goats was 69.2%, 80% and 82%, respectively. About 10% of sheep and goats had epgs higher than 1 000, the remainder having light to moderate infections. The overall prevalence of coccidial oocysts in calves, sheep and goats was 30%, 44% and 45%, respectively. Poor productivity in ASAL areas, where nutrition is often poor, is likely to be pronounced in the presence of parasite infections. These findings indicate that viable internal parasite control should be implemented in the study area in order to increase the productivity of the livestock there.  相似文献

Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. infections, and the patterns of cyst and oocyst shedding, were observed in a herd of dairy calves in Ontario over a period of 3 mo. Cysts and oocysts were detected and enumerated in fecal samples using immunofluorescence microscopy; Giardia and Cryptosporidium DNA was detected using the polymerase chain reaction. The prevalence of G. duodenalis increased during the course of the study, reaching a peak of 93.1% when calves were 43 to 54 d old, and then decreased. Conversely, Cryptosporidium spp. prevalence was highest (75.9%) when calves were 11 to 22 d old, and subsequently decreased. The numbers of cysts and oocysts shed per gram of feces were positively correlated over time with the respective prevalence rates. Along with genotyping data, temporal changes in prevalence and shedding patterns should be considered when testing dairy calves for the presence and concentrations of cysts and oocysts, and when considering the potential for zoonotic transmission.  相似文献
