The purpose of this study was to increase understanding of the factors initiating feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions (FORLs). Fifty-six teeth (clinically and radiographically unaffected by ORLs) were harvested. Of these, 43 were from cats that had ORLs in other teeth (group A) and 13 were from cats with no clinical or radiographic evidence of ORLs in any teeth (group B). Twenty-six teeth in group A and one tooth in group B showed histological evidence of external root resorption (surface resorption and replacement resorption resulting in ankylosis). Some teeth in group B showed healed cementum resorption. It has previously been assumed that FORLs were similar to lesions associated with peripheral inflammatory root resorption, and were associated with periodontal disease. These histological findings suggest instead that a FORL is a non-inflammatory replacement resorption, resulting in ankylosis. The periodontal ligament of resorbing teeth lacked normal fibrous architecture, but was not inflamed. Resorption was not identified in cervical cementum. However, the histological appearance of the cervical cementum differed between the two groups. Several aetiopathogenetic explanatory models which arise from these observations are discussed.  相似文献

Many feline resorptive lesions are easily diagnosed by clinical oral examination, whereas others require dental radiographs. Radiographs can reveal the presence of resorption, and often the nature of the resorptive process as well. Removal of affected teeth when they cause discomfort, or of the portion of the tooth causing the discomfort, remains the only treatment that provides long-term resolution. Until we understand the etiology of the inciting causes and of the factors contributing to the progression of resorptive lesions, reliable prevention cannot be offered.  相似文献

The cellular activity and changes in mineral composition of dental tissues involved in feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions were investigated. Teeth with at least 1 lesion (n = 10) were extracted from 10 different cats that were presented primarily for chronic gingivostomatitis and/or severe periodontal disease. Scanning electron microscopic methods were used to determine the presence of resorptive cells in 8 teeth while 2 teeth were evaluated for pathologic changes in dental mineral composition. Observations were complicated by the presence of organic wear on the dental surfaces, however resorptive cells could be clearly identified in feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions. Resorptive cells had morphologic features indicative of "osteoclast-like" cells or odontoclasts. Resorptive cell activity created a resorption area of darker dentin continuous with physiologic dentin. The darker dentin area seemed poorly mineralized and showed a significantly lower calcium/phosphorous ratio compared with adjacent physiologic denting in 1 tooth. A significantly higher level of magnesium combined with available carbonate ions may have increased the solubility in areas of darker dentin.  相似文献

Abnormal extrusion of canine teeth is often noted in middle-aged and geriatric domestic cats. The same age group of cats also is commonly affected by tooth resorption (TR). This study explored the relationship between these two phenomena of unknown etiology. Using digital radiography, the distance between the alveolar margin (AM) and cementoenamel junction (CEJ), referred to as the AM-CEJ distance, was measured in clinically and radiographically healthy maxillary canine teeth of 24 TR-affected and 29 TR-free cats. The mean AM-CEJ distance of maxillary canine teeth of cats with and cats without TR was 2.68-mm and 2.22-mm, respectively. An analysis of covariance adjusting for age revealed a significant correlation (p = 0.02) between tooth extrusion and TR. Extrusion of the maxillary canine teeth became clinically apparent when an AM-CEJ distance of 2.5-mm or greater was evident in the absence of horizontal or vertical alveolar bone loss. Based on this criterion, 15 of 24 cats with TR (63.0 %) exhibited extrusion of maxillary canine teeth, compared to 9 of 29 cats without TR (31.0 %). Four extruded and five non-extruded maxillary canine teeth were evaluated histologically. Cementum of extruded teeth was significantly thicker compared to that of non-extruded teeth. Four of 4 canine teeth with extrusion (100 %) showed histological evidence of resorption, compared to 1 of 5 canine teeth without extrusion (20.0 %). These results suggest that tooth extrusion is linked to or may be caused by similar factors responsible for the development of TR.  相似文献

The etiology of feline dental resorptive lesions is unknown, but some evidence suggests that interactions between components of the periodontium may be initiating factors in the development of these lesions. In the present study, 22 clinically normal teeth were harvested from 7 cats. The teeth and periodontium were radiographed and examined histologically. In addition, 14 of the 22 teeth were examined histometrically. Two teeth were histologically normal with an open apical foramen and two were normal with a closed apical foramen. Histological evidence of periodontal ligament degeneration without cementum resorption was observed in 8 teeth, and varying degrees of cementum resorption were observed in 10 teeth. Mandibular molar and premolar teeth had distal drift, and mandibular canine teeth had mesial drift. Alterations in the periodontal ligament may represent a preclinical stage of dental resorption.  相似文献

Ninety-six, randomly selected Swedish cats were evaluated for the presence of dental resorptive lesions. All cats were examined while receiving general anesthesia. Diagnosis was based on oral examination and full-mouth, intraoral dental radiographs. Information concerning age, sex, vaccination status, eating habits, food type, environment (indoor or outdoor housing), oral, discomfort, dental care, and medical treatment was recorded. Hematologic samples included analysis for FeLV, FIV, and calcivirus. Of the cats examined in this study, 32% had gross or radiographic signs of dental resorptive lesions. There was a positive relationship between the occurrence of dental resorptive lesions and increasing age.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine patterns of alveolar bone loss (periodontitis) and other lesions evident on full-mouth survey radiographs of cats. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 147 cats. PROCEDURE: Full-mouth radiographs were evaluated for evidence and severity of alveolar bone loss, odontoclastic resorption lesions (ORL), retained roots, missing teeth, signs of endodontic disease secondary to periodontitis, and apical resorption. RESULTS: 106 (72%) cats had some degree of periodontitis, 100 (68%) were missing teeth, 98 (67%) had ORL, 78 (53%) had expansion of the buccal alveolar bone at 1 or more canine teeth, 75 (51%) had retained roots, 48 (33%) had apical resorption, and 12 (8%) had signs of endodontic disease secondary to periodontitis. Cats < 4 years old were not significantly more likely than the general population to have normal alveolar bone height. Prevalence of ORL increased with age, but cats > or =13 years old were less likely than the general population to have moderate or severe generalized periodontitis. Purebred cats were not significantly more likely to have periodontitis or ORL than mixed-breed cats. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that periodontitis is common in cats and that horizontal bone loss is the most common radiographic pattern of alveolar bone loss. Purebred cats were not more likely than mixed-breed cats to have ORL or periodontitis, but when they did have periodontitis, it was more likely to be moderate to severe. Cats with ORL were less likely than cats without ORL to have normal alveolar bone height and more likely to have severe focal vertical bone loss.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether odontoclastic resorption lesions were associated with radiographic evidence of periapical lucencies in cats. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 265 feline dental patients. PROCEDURE: Full-mouth radiographs were examined for evidence of odontoclastic resorption lesions, periapical lucencies, periodontitis, and fractured teeth. RESULTS: Odontoclastic resorption lesions affecting 567 teeth were identified in 161 (60.8%) cats. Periapical lucencies were identified in 53 teeth in 35 cats. Periapical lucencies were most commonly associated with fractured teeth (25 teeth with periapical lucencies) and severe periodontitis (21 teeth). None of the periapical lucencies appeared to be specifically associated with resorption lesions. Prevalence of periapical lucencies in cats with resorption lesions was not significantly different from prevalence in cats without. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that although odontoclastic resorption lesions are common in cats, pulpal involvement associated with these lesions does not appear to be associated with development of radiographically detectable periapical lucencies. Crown amputation with intentional root retention may, therefore, be a suitable alternative to extraction in selected cats with odontoclastic resorption lesions.  相似文献

A poorly described, painful disorder of incisor and canine teeth, variably causing periodontitis, with resorptive or proliferative changes of the calcified dental tissues, has recently been documented in aged horses. No plausible aetiopathogenesis for this syndrome has been recorded. Eighteen diseased teeth from eight horses were examined grossly and microscopically and showed the presence of odontoclastic cells by tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining. A chronological sequence of odontoclastic resorption followed by hypercementosis was demonstrated and, consequently, the term equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is proposed for this disorder. EOTRH shares many features with similar dental syndromes described in humans and cats. An aetiological hypothesis proposes mechanical stress of the periodontal ligament as the initiating factor.  相似文献

Cat teeth with resorptive lesions and periodontitis may have a distinctly different clinical and radiographic appearance compared with teeth that have focal, lesion-associated gingivitis. A retrospective, case-controlled study was performed to determine the occurrence of root replacement in cats with resorptive lesions and associated periodontitis. Of 543 teeth evaluated with resorptive lesions, radiographic and/or clinical signs of periodontitis were identified in 236 (43.5%) teeth. Periodontitis was present in 43 of 275 (15.6%) teeth with root replacement and 193 of 268 (72.0%) teeth that had normal radiodensity and maintenance of the periodontal ligament. There was a significantly lower occurrence of root replacement in cat teeth with resorptive lesions and periodontitis.  相似文献

Surveys were carried out in cats presented for dental examination in the Netherlands (432 cats) and in the United States (78 cats). In 62% of the Dutch cats and 67% of the US cats, resorptive lesions were present. In the Dutch study, Asian Short-hair (principally Siamese) cats were most commonly involved, and male cats were more commonly affected than females. The most commonly affected teeth were the fourth maxillary premolar and the mandibular premolar and molar teeth.  相似文献

The prevalence of odontoclastic resorptive lesions (ORLs) was determined in a clinically healthy cat population (228 cats) using both clinical (oral examination) and radiographic (full-mouth series with intraorally positioned dental film) methods. The overall prevalence rate was 29 per cent (mean age of the cat population 4.9 years). The mandibular third premolars (307, 407) were the most commonly affected tooth and the pattern of ORL development was symmetrical in most cats. The risk of having ORLs was found to increase with increasing age and cats with clinically and radiographically missing teeth were more likely to have the condition. Neutering, gender, age at neutering or mean whole mouth gingivitis index did not affect the prevalence of ORLs.  相似文献

The aim of this retrospective study was to follow the progression of radiographic changes in intentionally retained roots of teeth affected with tooth resorption type 2 in cats. Emphasis was placed on assessment of degree of resorption as well as the occurrence of inflammatory changes in tooth roots. The results confirm that crown amputation is an adequate treatment in cats for teeth affected by type 2 resorption.  相似文献

Intraoral dental radiographs of 217 cats presented for dental treatment were examined. Radiographic signs of dental resorptive lesions were identified in 107 cats, and the apparent central point of each lesion was mapped on a diagram of the tooth. Mapping was only possible on maxillary and mandibular canine teeth and on mandibular third premolar, fourth premolar, and first molar teeth. Resorptive lesions were most common on the molar teeth (n = 103) and maxillary canine teeth (n = 96), and least common on fourth premolar teeth (n = 56). Resorptive lesions on premolar and molar teeth were widely scattered, noted more commonly in the coronal portions of the root. Resorptive lesions in canine teeth had a tendency to be located more apically on the roots.  相似文献

Mandibles of two cats containing carious lesions were discovered among the previously published findings of feline dental resorptive lesions from materials examined at an archaeological museum. These lesions were too small to be noted on radiographs, and consisted of two inconspicuous enamel lesions in a mandibular left first molar tooth (309), a clinically visible white spot area containing an enamel lesion in a mandibular left fourth premolar tooth (308), and a root surface caries in the 308 of a different specimen. Histologic examination using special stains and polarized light revealed both initial and early initial stage enamel caries, as well as root surface caries. Knoop hardness measurements confirmed these findings, considered the first documented cases of feline caries.  相似文献

The development of alveolar bone adjacent to the tooth root during tooth eruption is not well understood. This study tested the hypothesis that predominantly woven bone forms adjacent to tooth roots during tooth eruption, but that this immature structure transitions to lamellar bone when the tooth comes into function. Additionally, bone resorption was predicted to play a key role in transitioning immature bone to more mature, load-bearing tissue. Miniature pigs were compared at two occlusal stages, 13 weeks (n = 3), corresponding with the mucosal penetration stage of M(1) tooth eruption, and 23 weeks (n = 3), corresponding with early occlusion of M(1) /M(1) . Bone samples for RNA extraction and qRT-PCR analysis were harvested from the diastema and adjacent to M(1) roots on one side. Following euthanasia, bone samples for haematoxylin and eosin and TRAP staining were harvested from these regions on the other side. In contrast to expectations, both erupting and functioning molars had reticular fibrolamellar structure in alveolar bone adjacent to M(1) . However, the woven bone matrix in older pigs was thicker and had denser primary osteons. Gene expression data and osteoclast cell counts showed a tendency for more bone resorptive activity near the molars than at distant sites, but no differences between eruptive stages. Thus, although resorption does occur, it is not a primary mechanism in the transition in alveolar bone from eruption to function. Incremental growth of existing woven bone and filling in of primary osteons within the mineralized scaffold generated the fortification necessary to support an erupted and functioning tooth.  相似文献

Facial abscessation and osteomyelitis due to dental disease is commonly seen in the Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus), but little is known about the prevalence or etiology of these lesions. To determine the prevalence of dental ailments, 56 skulls and mandibles of deceased Malayan tapirs were visually and radiographically evaluated. Dental lesions were scored according to severity, and individuals were classified according to their age (juvenile/ young adult/adult) and origin (captive/free ranging). All of the lesions identified were of a resorptive nature. seemingly originating at the cementoenamel junction and burrowing towards the center of the tooth. Overall, 27% of the investigated skulls presented radiolucent dental lesions. The prevalence among captive animals was 52% (13/25), while only 6% (2/31) of the free-ranging tapirs had dental lesions. The second, third, and fourth premolars and first molar were the teeth most commonly affected, and the mandibular teeth were more often involved than the maxillary dentition. This study demonstrates a high prevalence of resorptive dental lesions in captive Malayan tapirs and provides a strong indication that age and captivity are significant risk factors in the development of these lesions. This report describes a rare case of congenital oligodontia of the deciduous teeth and anodontia of the permanent teeth in a cat. According to cat's veterinarian, the patient had only two deciduous upper canines and no permanent teeth had ever erupted. Post-mortem evaluation showed a complete absence of teeth in the oral cavity and inflammatory lesions were not found on the gums. Histopathological analysis of serial sections of maxilla and mandible revealed absence of odontogenic epithelium, inflammatory cells and odontoclastic resorptive lesions. Diagnosis was confirmed after both the establishment that there were no remaining dental structures and the exclusion of other relevant diseases that lead to tooth loss, such as periodontal disease, renal fibrous osteodystrophy, odontoclastic resorptive lesions, ectodermal dysplasia and trauma.  相似文献

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis is a rarely reported condition in the incisor and canine teeth of older horses. Histologically, there is internal and external resorption of the tooth with formation of excessive cementum. Once lesions become infected or supragingival this condition is very painful. The clinical manifestation, diagnosis and treatment of hypercementosis in an Arabian mare are described.  相似文献
