1. The first objective was to evaluate baseline heart rate (HR) responses in fast growing broilers fed ad libitum from 1 to 45d or subjected to a food restriction (85%, 70% and 55% of ad libitum from 7 to 21d) and a refeeding (22 to 45d) regimen in a normal thermal environment. The second was to evaluate HR and haematocrit responses in fast growing broilers reared at a low environmental temperature and fed ad libitum (A-L) from 1 to 42d, subjected to food restriction (70% ad libitum ) between 7 to 21d and refed thereafter (R-R), or subjected to food restriction between 7 to 42d (R), and to follow the changes in normal birds and those prone to ascites. 2. The baseline HR in the normal thermal environment at 21 and 45d in birds fed ad libitum was lower (P < 0.001) than at 7d. The food-restricted groups had higher HRs at 21d than at 7d, with the differences significant (P < 0.01) for the 70% and 55% treatments. At 21d the HRs in restricted groups were significantly higher (P < 0.01) than in ad libitum -fed birds. After returning to ad libitum feeding the HRs in these birds tended to decline, with the differences significant (P < 0.05) for the 70% and 55% treatments. 3. In the birds exposed to cold, each feeding regimen produced distinct patterns of change in HR and haematocrit. Both feeding regimen and age had significant (P < 0.001) effects on the changes of both variables. Relative to 7d, on 14d and 21d the HRs decreased and haematocrits increased in all groups, but the rates of change were highest in the A-L and R-R birds. The first fulminant cases of ascites were observed during the third week in the A-L group and during the fourth week in the R-R group. None of the chickens from the R group developed ascites. Altogether, the incidence of ascites was 48% in the A-L group and 28% in the R-R group. 4. Among the birds exposed to cold, the ascitic birds had significantly (P < 0.001) lower HRs and higher haematocrits than normal birds from the same feeding regimen group. The time trends in the rates of change in HR and haematocrit were distinctly different (P < 0.001) for ascitic and normal birds. The change in feeding regimen from restricted to ad libitum in the R-R group resulted in a significant (P < 0.001) decrease in HR and increase in haematocrit. 5. In view of the evidence presented, it appears that hypoxaemia and tissue hypoxia in broiler chickens may be a result of circulatory insufficiency associated with progressive bradycardia rather than, as commonly believed, pulmonary insufficiency. In this situation the pulmonary hypertension may be a secondary symptom.  相似文献

1. An experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of early feed restriction (FR) on immunocompetence of Ross and Arian chickens with separated sexes under heat stress (HS) conditions. 2. Chickens consumed feed ad libitum (AL) or were restricted on alternate days from 11 to 20 d of age. From 35 to 41 d of age, the HS groups were exposed to a high ambient temperature of 39 +/- 1 degreesC for 7 h each day, while the thermoneutral groups (TN) were at 33 degrees C. 3. At 21 and 42d of age, the percentage of CD4+ (helper T cells) and CD8+ (cytotoxic T cells) were determined by flow cytometry. Antibody response to sheep red blood cells (SRBC) and heterophil/lymphocyte (H/L) ratio were determined on d 21 and 42. 4. On d 21, FR elevated the CD4+, antibody titre and H/L ratio, but it decreased the CD8+ T cells. On d 42, HS decreased CD4+, CD8+, and antibody titre, but it increased H/L ratio. Under TN conditions, FR chickens had higher CD4+ than AL chickens. On d 42, FR/HS chickens had higher CD4+ and antibody titre, but they had lower CD8+ and H/L ratio than AL/HS chickens. 5. On d 42, the TN-Ross strain had lower CD4+, but they had higher CD8+ and antibody titres than the TN-Arian strain. On d 42, the HS-Arian strain had higher antibody titres and a lower H/L ratio than the HS-Ross strain. 6. Male chickens had higher CD4+, CD8+, antibody titres and H/L ratios 25 in all treatment groups. 7. In conclusion, FR early in life reduced some of the negative effects of the heat stress on the immune system of broiler chickens when exposed to high environmental temperatures later in life.  相似文献

Two groups of chickens were used to measure the initial post‐hatching changes and the effect of feeding on the blood reduced glutathione levels and haematocrit values of chickens. One group was starved for 3 days after hatching, while the other was allowed food at all times. Blood samples were taken from both groups of chickens at various stages from 1 day to 3 weeks of age.

Haematocrit values varied considerably in both groups of chickens. During starvation the haematocrit value increased, then decreased after the chickens were allowed food. In the normally fed chickens the haematocrit value decreased initially, then increased slowly to approach a more normal value.

Reduced glutathione is an intracellular blood constituent, so the marked variations in haematocrit value influenced the concentration of GSH per unit volume of whole blood. Blood cell GSH levels gave a better measurement of the concentration of blood GSH. The blood cell GSH level increased markedly during the initial post‐hatching period, but not until the chickens had ingested and metabolised food.  相似文献

1. This experiment was carried out to evaluate the productive and physiological consequences of a slight but long term food restriction of male broiler chickens from 2 commercial strains. 2. Cobb-500 and Ross chickens were submitted to a 20% food restriction from 8 to 21 d of age. Strain, food programme and their interactive effects were analysed in terms of consequences upon performance, mortality, incidence of sudden death syndrome (SDS) and ascites syndrome (AS), index of right cardiac hypertrophy and plasma concentrations of hormones related to metabolism and growth (T3, T4, T3:T4 ratio, IGF-I and GH). 3. Although some catch-up growth was observed by refeeding previously restricted birds after 22 d of rearing, food restriction decreased (P ≤ 0.05) body weight at market age (42 d) irrespective of the strain, but improved (P ≤ 0.05) food conversion. 4. The incidence of mortality was not high in non-restricted birds but SDS and AS caused more than 50% of deaths. Hypertrophic cardiac index was observed in chickens of both strains after 4 weeks of age and was higher in ad libitum fed birds. 5. During the period of food restriction, plasma T3 and IGF-I concentrations decreased whereas plasma T4 and GH concentrations increased compared to those of the age-matched ad libitum fed counterparts. During the subsequent ad libitum feeding period, few differences in circulating hormone concentrations were observed, except for the higher mean GH litres in previously food-restricted chickens at 35 d of age. 6. These results indicate that even a non-severe food restriction negatively affects body weight of 42-d-old male broilers but these are benefits with improved food efficiency and diminished mortality from metabolic disturbances. The hormone results suggest that the degree of food restriction applied was not severe because there was a very fast adaptive response with small and transient alterations in T3, T4 and GH plasma concentrations during the period of compensatory growth.  相似文献

1. This investigation was carried out to study the influence of early quantitative food restriction (40% of ad libitum intake from 7 to 14 d of age) and environmental rearing temperature (thermoneutral, cold and hot) on long bone (tibia, femur and humerus) development in broiler chickens. 2. Tibia, femur and humerus were obtained at the ages of 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 d, and the variables studied were: length and width (mm, expressed as absolute values), bone breaking strength (kgf) and bone weight/bone length index (BW/BL, mg/mm). 3. All bone variables increased with bird age. Food restriction reduced bone length and width but did not affect bone weight. High environmental rearing temperature reduced bone length and width at 42 d of age. Bone strength was not affected by environmental temperature but the calculated BW/BL index was reduced by heat exposure. 4. The findings suggest that food restriction and high environmental rearing temperature reduce long bone growth; bone breaking strength was affected by bird age but not by food restriction nor rearing ambient temperature.  相似文献

本试验旨在研究相对湿度(RH)对递增性偏热环境下肉鸡体热调节及下丘脑热休克蛋白70(HSP70)含量的影响。选取21日龄爱拔益加(AA)肉鸡180只转入环境控制舱,随机分成3组,每组6个重复,每个重复10只鸡(公母各占1/2)。预试期7 d,温度20℃,RH 60%。正试期15 d,28日龄开始试验,将3组的RH分别调整到35%、60%和85%,温度仍为20℃;3 d为1周期,共分5个周期,从第2周期开始每周期的第1天将3组的温度均在10:00开始升高3℃并在0.5 h内达到稳定;5个周期的温度分别为20、23、26、29和32℃。结果表明:1)85%RH组肉鸡的呼吸频率极显著高于60%RH和35%RH组(P0.01),60%RH组的呼吸频率极显著高于35%RH组(P0.01);85%RH组肉鸡的体核温度显著高于60%RH组(P0.05);35%RH组肉鸡小腿和脚蹼的皮肤温度极显著高于60%RH和85%RH组(P0.01),35%RH和60%RH组肉鸡鸡冠、耳垂和眼睑的皮肤温度极显著高于85%RH组(P0.01)。2)85%RH组肉鸡的血清碱性磷酸酶(AKP)活性显著高于35%RH和60%RH组(P0.05);35%RH和85%RH组肉鸡的血清肌酸激酶(CK)活性显著高于60%RH组(P0.05)。RH对递增性偏热环境下肉鸡的血清谷草转氨酶(AST)和乳酸脱氢酶(LDH)活性无显著影响(P0.05)。3)85%RH组肉鸡的血清三碘甲腺原氨酸(T3)含量显著高于35%RH组(P0.05);35%RH和85%RH组肉鸡的血清甲状腺素(T4)含量显著高于60%RH组(P0.05);60%RH和85%RH组肉鸡的血清皮质酮(CORT)含量极显著高于35%RH组(P0.01)。4)35%RH组肉鸡下丘脑HSP70含量显著低于60%RH和85%RH组(P0.05)。综上所述,在为期15 d的20~32℃递增性偏热环境下,高湿(85%)和低湿(35%)调节28~42日龄肉鸡体热平衡的途径和程度不同。  相似文献

Production responses of laying hens to food restriction during rearing were measured in two trials. Food was restricted by two methods: time restriction (TR, food continuously available for 24 to 30 h each 72 h) and proportion restriction (PR, daily allocations of about 60 to 70% of that consumed by ad libitum fed birds (F]. The rearing treatments were applied from 42 to 162 d and from 56 to 168 d of age in experiments 1 and 2 respectively. All birds were fed ad libitum in the laying period to 437 d and 476 d of age in experiments 1 and 2 respectively. Body weight was reduced significantly in both experiments by both methods of restriction, but more so by TR. Marked compensatory growth accompanied the high food intake following the end of food restriction. There was a significant increase in average egg weight concommitant with a change in the relationship between egg weight and age. Possibly this is due to an altered pattern of food intake at onset of lay.  相似文献

1. The effect of relative humidity (RH, 40% to 75%) at moderate ambient temperatures (Ta, 28 degrees and 30 degrees C) on the performance and thermoregulation of male broiler chickens and turkeys was studied at the age of 4 to 8 weeks. 2. Weight gain and food intake of male broiler chickens were significantly higher at 60% to 65% RH but food conversion efficiency was not affected by RH. In male turkeys, no effect of RH on performance was recorded. 3. Both chickens and turkeys controlled body temperature at normothermic levels during exposure to the experimental environmental conditions. 4. The rate of panting estimated from blood pH and pCO2 was lower in chickens exposed to 28 degrees C than to 30 degrees C. In turkeys, the rate was lower than that recorded in chickens at both Ta(s). 5. Plasma T3 was positively and significantly correlated with food intake. 6. It may be concluded that RH plays a role in the performance of chickens exposed to 30 degrees and 28 degrees C. whereas male turkeys must respond to RH at Ta >30 degrees C.  相似文献

1. This study was conducted to determine the effect of early-age food restriction on heat shock protein (hsp) 70 synthesis in the brains of female broiler chickens exposed to high ambient temperatures. 2. Chicks were brooded for 3 weeks and then maintained at 24+/-1 degrees C. 3. On d 0, chicks were assigned to one of 4 feeding regimens; each regimen was applied to 4 cages of chicks. The regimens were: (1) ad libitum feeding (AL); (2) 80% food restriction at 4, 5 and 6 d of age (F80); (3) 60% food restriction at 4, 5, and 6 d of age (F60); and (4) 40% food restriction at 4, 5 and 6 d of age (F40). From d 35 to d 41, all chicks were subjected to 38+/-1 degrees C for 2 h/d. 4. One day following food restriction (d 7), hsp 70 expression in the brain samples of F60 and F40 chicks was augmented but not those fed AL and F80. 5. Prior to the heat challenge (d 35), all chicks had similar hsp 70 response. Irrespective of feeding regimen, there was a marked increase in hsp 70 expression after 4 d of heat treatment (d 38). Following 7 d of heat exposure (d 41), except for the F60 chicks, the augmented hsp 70 expression in the brains of AL, F80 and F40 birds was not maintained. 6. Enhancement of hsp 70 expression was noted in birds subjected to F60, but not AL, F80 or F40, throughout the period of heat exposure.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness of early-age growth limitation, achieved through feed restriction (FR), as a means of reducing ascites mortality in broiler chickens exposed to low ambient temperatures. Feed restriction was applied to broilers from 5 to 11 d of age so as to reduce their weight gain to about 40% of that of control broilers that were fed ad libitum (AL). At the age of 21 d the chickens were exposed to a temperature of 15°C, which induced ascites. By 46 d of age, ascites incidence and mortality in the feed-restricted birds were reduced to 15.79 vs. 36.84% and 7.89 vs. 26.32%, respectively, compared with those in the controls (P < 0.05). After feed restriction was stopped, the FR chickens had accelerated weight gain and improved feed conversion ratio from 11 to 18 d of age (P < 0.05), and by 46 d they had achieved the same body weight as the AL birds. Ascitic broilers had smaller relative breast muscle and spleen weights than those of the healthy broilers at 46 d (P < 0.05). However, the relative weights of lung, heart, and liver and the right ventricle weight per total ventricle weight (RV:TV) ratios were greater in ascitic broilers (P < 0.05). At age 37 d, when ascites had developed but not yet caused mortality, the ascitic broilers had lower plasma concentrations of the thyroid hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine, and higher hematocrit values (P < 0.05) in comparison with the healthy ones. Ascitic birds also had lower oxygen consumption at 6 wk (P < 0.05), which agrees with information that the terminal stage of the ascites syndrome can be characterized by low oxygen consumption. We concluded that the early-age feed restriction reduced ascites incidence and mortality and prevented reduction of the thyroid hormone concentrations in male broilers reared at low ambient temperature from the age of 3 wk onward.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of humic acids (HA) on intestinal viscosity, leaky gut and ammonia excretion in a 24 hr feed restriction (FR) model to induce intestinal permeability in chickens. One‐day‐old male Cobb‐Vantress broilers were randomly allocated to one of two groups (= 25 chickens), with or without 0.2% of isolated HA from worm‐compost, and placed in brooder batteries. Chicks had ad libitum access to water and feed for 14 days. Intestinal permeability was induced by 24 hr FR starting at 14 days. At 15 days of age, chickens in both groups were given an appropriate dose of fluorescein isothiocyanate dextran (FITC‐d) by oral gavage. Intestine and liver samples were also collected to evaluate viscosity and bacterial translocation (BT), respectively. An increase (p < .05) in intestinal viscosity was observed in the experimental group consuming 0.2% of HA and was confirmed in a published in vitro digestion model that simulates the chemical and physical conditions of the crop, proventriculus and intestine of chickens. Furthermore, the treated group also showed a significant reduction in FITC‐d, liver BT and ammonia in the manure. These results suggest that HA have a positive impact in intestinal integrity in chickens.  相似文献

1. An experiment was conducted to study the comparative effects of peach palm oil (PPO, Bactris gasipaes H.B.K), crude palm oil (CPO, Elaeis guinenesis), maize oil (MO) and beef tallow (BT) on serum total and lipoprotein cholesterol levels and haemostatic factors in broiler chickens. 2. Four experimental diets were formulated to be isocaloric (14·2 MJ AME(N)/kg) and isonitrogenous (230 g CP/kg). PPO was extracted from the whole dry fruit with hexane. Each fat was added to the diet in an amount equivalent to 25% of total dietary calories. Six replicate groups of eight male broiler chicks were assigned randomly to each dietary treatment. Diets were fed on ad libitum basis. The experiment lasted 42 d. 3. At 42 d, birds were fasted overnight and three chickens/dietary treatment were utilised to draw blood for lipoprotein separation. Various haemostatic factors were determined in thrombocyte-poor plasma. Thrombocyte aggregation was assayed in whole blood. 4. No significant differences were detected in body-weight gain or feed efficiency between the chickens fed on the PPO diet and those receiving the CPO, MO or BT diets. Total serum cholesterol (TC), very low density lipoprotein cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL(C)) were not significantly affected after consuming the PPO, CPO and MO diets. Serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL(C)) was reduced only by the MO diet. Birds fed on the PPO diet had a significantly lower [corrected] LDLC/HDLC ratio compared with other dietary treatments 5. Thrombocyte count and thrombin time were not significantly affected by the experimental diets. Dietary oils significantly affected prothrombin time, fibrinogen concentration and thrombocyte aggregation. PPO and MO diets elicited the lowest fibrinogen levels compared to the CPO and BT diets. Thrombocyte aggregation in broilers fed on the PPO diet was similar to that of the CPO, MO and BT diets. 6. The results suggest that PPO might efficiently provide up to 25% of dietary energy in broiler diets. Additionally, PPO elicited a more favourable LDL(C)/HDL(C) ratio and haemostatic pattern in broiler chickens. These findings may be of general interest to the food industry.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of thermal manipulation at 5 days of age and short‐term fasting during the warmest part of the day on responses to prolonged heat stress of broilers. A total of 240‐day‐old Ross 308 female broiler chicks were divided into three groups: control, thermal manipulation (chicks were exposed to 36 °C for 24 h at 5 days of age) and short‐term fasting during the warmest part of the day (10.00–17.00 h). Prolonged heat stress was induced daily from 28 to 42 days by heating until the ambient temperature reached 32–35 °C between 10.00 and 17.00 h. Both thermal manipulation and short‐term fasting resulted in a decrease in rectal temperatures and haematocrit values at 35 and 41 days of age. Thermal manipulation improved body weight, feed consumption and feed conversion. However, short‐term fasting caused a reduction in body weight and a deterioration in feed conversion. Short‐term fasting lowered the percentages of carcass, whereas thermal manipulation highered breast yield. Both thermal manipulation and short‐term fasting decreased heart mass and abdominal fat.  相似文献

1. The performance of 1680 male broiler chickens was measured from one to 42 d of age. They were given diets with three (125, 165 and 205 mEq/kg) electrolyte balances (sodium + potassium - chloride), two sources of added potassium (carbonate or sulphate) and two anticoccidial agents (90 mg/kg of either monensin or lasalocid). 2. The dietary treatments had no significant effects on the growth performance of broiler chickens in the starter phase. 3. In the finisher phase, the chickens given the diets containing lasalocid utilised food less efficiently that those given the diets containing monensin. 4. There were significant interactions between dietary electrolyte balance and source of added potassium on body weight gains and food:gain ratios in the finisher phase. In diets with an electrolyte balance of 205 mEq/kg, the inclusion of potassium sulphate instead of potassium carbonate increased body weight gains by 3.4% and reduced food:gain ratios by 4.6%. 5. The body weight gains of chickens given the finisher diets containing lasalocid and added potassium carbonate were reduced by 2.6% compared to those of chickens given the diets containing monensin or added potassium sulphate. 6. The litter moisture content was higher in pens with chickens on the diets with an electrolyte balance of 205 mEq/kg than on the diets with either 125 or 165 mEq/kg. Both lasalocid and potassium sulphate tended to increase the litter moisture content. 7. It may be concluded that the inclusion of 90 mg/kg of either monensin or lasalocid in broiler diets does not alter the balance of electrolytes required for optimum growth performance of broiler chickens.  相似文献

1. Three experiments were performed to examine practical methods of early-life food restrictions and to examine the influence of increased dietary lysine or methionine on bodyweight recovery during re-alimentation in broiler chickens. 2. Food intake of broiler chicks was restricted quantitatively or by dietary dilution at 3 ages and the birds slaughtered at 49 d of age. The success of each food restriction was measured in terms of bodyweight recovery and body fat content. 3. Discontinuous food restriction and restriction by dietary dilution produced similar effects to a previously established food restriction regime. Bodyweight recovery was complete and fat contents depressed. FCR was inconsistently affected. 4. Supplementation of the finisher diet with lysine and/or methionine produced no conclusive results when this diet was fed to broilers previously subjected to early-life food restriction.  相似文献

The influence of housing temperature in early life on subsequent growth and development of broiler chickens was investigated. Hatchlings were exposed to an ambient temperature of 34 degrees C (NT) or 28 degrees C (LT) on d 1. Both temperature regimes decreased with 1 degrees C per day for 5 d. At d 6 the ambient temperature of the LT group was increased to the same ambient temperature as the NT group. At d 29 all chickens were exposed to 10 degrees C for 7 d. Navel temperature was lower in the LT group than in the NT group from d 2 to 5. Body weight of the chickens was higher in the NT group than in the LT group and the difference between both groups increased in time. Temperature treatment during the early post-hatching period did not result in a long-term alternation in organ development, haematocrit value, energy and protein metabolism or the occurrence of ascites. Although not significantly, the course of metabolism suggested that early thermal treatment had long-term effects. Before cold treatment in week 5, the NT group showed higher values for energy and protein metabolism than the LT group, but during cold exposure, the opposite was found. We concluded that exposure of chickens to a moderate reduction in house temperatures during early post-hatching life seemed to have long-term negative effects on the performance of these chickens, but, on the other hand, it seemed that these chickens were better prepared to withstand cold challenge later in life.  相似文献

1. This study was conducted to evaluate the protective effect of natural sodium bentonite (NaB) in the prevention of toxic effects of aflatoxins. Five hundred and twenty-eight 1-d-old Ross male broiler chickens were housed in pens (22 chickens per pen) for 42 d. There were 3 inclusion rates of NaB (0, 2.5, and 5 g/kg) and 2 of aflatoxins (0 and 3 mg/kg food). Each treatment had 4 replicates of 22 chickens. 2. All chickens treated with aflatoxin and without bentonite were adversely affected. NaB treatment at 5.0 g/kg improved body weights at 42 d of age by 31.3%, increased food intake by 23.8% and improved productive efficiency by 40.1%. Weights of liver, heart, pancreas and crop and biochemical variables were not affected by dietary NaB. However, serum phosphorous concentration was reduced by 30% compared with chickens that received aflatoxin. 3. NaB caused no adverse effects on chickens that did not receive aflatoxin. 4. It is concluded that NaB at pH 7.9 partially neutralises the effects of aflatoxins on broiler chickens when included at 5.0 g/kg in the diet.  相似文献

1. An experiment was conducted with male broiler chickens to investigate the effect of different early food restriction programmes on proportional weights and allometric growth coefficients of carcase parts and on pulsatile growth hormone secretion. 2. At 4 d of age the animals were restricted to 80% or 90% of the ad libitum intake for 4 d or 80% for 8 d. When the restriction was finished, all birds received ad libitum food again. 3. On d 1, 8, 11, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42, from each group 8 birds were weighed, stunned and killed and the weights of the stomachs, liver, heart, sternum, right thigh, right drumstick, breast and abdominal fat pad were determined. On d 29, 30, 31, 32 serial blood samples of 2 birds from each group were taken to determine the plasma growth hormone (GH) content. 4. Only the most severe restriction resulted in a tendency for the stomachs to mature earlier and the thighs to mature later. No other significant effect on the allometric coefficients could be observed. 5. It is concluded that during the restriction the birds give priority to the development of the supply organs such as the stomach, which are more important during early development at the expense of the demand tissues like breast and thigh. 6. No significant differences concerning the GH secretory parameters could be observed.  相似文献

1. The physiological and metabolic effects of a short term food restriction of broiler chickens at an early age and grown to 49 d of age were examined. 2. Fat accretion was measured by tritium dilution. Adipocyte characteristics of the fat tissue were examined by cell counting after fixation with osmium tetroxide and the metabolic effects of food restrictions were measured by closed-circuit respiration calorimetry. 3. The success of food restrictions in allowing full bodyweight recovery and producing decreases in body fat was associated with a negative energy balance and a positive nitrogen balance achieved during the restriction phase. 4. Food restrictions produced decreases in body fat possibly by causing a delay in adipocyte hyperplasia. Excess dietary energy was then lost as heat until adipocyte hyperplasia re-commenced allowing the bird to store surplus dietary energy as fat. 5. Two groups of meat‐type cockerels, 56 d of age, from the same hatch but of different mean live‐weights (1135 g ± SD 96.2 and 544 g ± 72.0) due to differences in earlier nutritional treatments were implanted with hexoestrol to determine the effects on food consumption, live‐weight gain, carcass gain, chemical composition of carcass and offal, and weight of some body components. Replicate groups were slaughtered prior to implantation and at the end of the 28‐d experimental period.

Implantation with a single 15 mg hexoestrol pellet resulted in the following significant differences compared with untreated controls: increases in food consumption, live‐weight gain, carcass weight and weight of offal of 21.5, 14.2, 8.2 and 16.6 per cent respectively; poorer food conversion, higher total fat in the carcass, offal and total body and, relative to body weight, heavier livers and lighter hearts, gizzards, legs and necks. The increased fat in treated chickens accounted for all the increased body weight and carcass weight.

In comparisons of small and large chickens there was no significant difference in live‐weight gain during the 28‐d experimental period. At both 56 and 84 d of age the dressing percentages were lower and the weights relative to body weight of offal, liver, shanks and gizzards were higher in small than in large chickens. Percentage moisture was significantly higher in the total bodies and carcasses of small chickens, while percentage fat was significantly lower in the carcasses of small chickens at both 56 and 84 d and in the total bodies and offals at 56 d.  相似文献
