Two experiments were conducted to evaluate feedlot performance, lactational characteristics, and carcass composition and quality of heifers and the performance of their calves in a single-calf heifer (SCH) system. In Exp. 1, 13 [10 lactating (L) and 3 nonlactating (NL)] prenatally androgenized (PA) heifers, born to cows implanted with testosterone propionate (TP) and 19 (13 L and 6 NL) control (C) heifers, born to nonimplanted cows, were used. Heifers were calved and the pairs were placed in feedlot pens to evaluate the effects of PA on feedlot performance and lactation. Heifers were fed an 85% concentrate diet and fed to a compositional endpoint of 1.1 cm of subcutaneous fat cover, at which point calves were weaned and heifers slaughtered approximately 12 h later. The NL heifers consumed 17.0% less (P<0.01) dry matter and were 30.8% more (P<0.01) efficient in feed conversion. When calf performance was included, overall feed efficiency of L heifers was 26.9% greater (P<0.05; 0.151 vs 0.119) than that of the NL feedlot heifers. Prenatal androgenization had no effect on heifer performance. Four percent fat-corrected milk yield averaged 7.79 and 5.62 kg/d for PA and C heifers, respectively. The NL heifers had 11.0% greater (P<0.01) marbling score and yield grades were 3.77 and 3.03 (P<0.05) for NL and L heifers, respectively. Livers (P<0.01) and kidneys (P<0.05) as a percentage of shrunk weight were heavier for L heifers than for NL heifers. Two carcasses were classified as hard-boned (C-maturity) and 74% received a USDA Choice grade. The L heifers tended (P<0.10) to have lower taste panel tenderness scores; however, shearforce was similar (P=0.81) for L and NL heifers. In Exp. 2, 24 Angus × Holstein heifers were utilized in the single-calf heifer system, similar to Exp. 1. Calves were weaned from their dam between d 64 and 89 postpartum. Heifers that had their calves early weaned (EW) gained 44.2% faster (P<0.01) and consumed 10.8% less (P<0.05) DM than L heifers. The EW heifers were 60.0% more (P<0.01) efficient than L heifers. However, when calf performance was included with heifer performance, L heifers were 23.7% more (P<0.05) efficient than EW heifers. The EW heifers had 18.9% heavier (P<0.01) hot carcasses than L heifers. Backfat thickness was 1.07 and 0.66 cm (P<0.01) for the EW and L heifers.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to determine the influence of both the concentration of endophytic fungus infestation in tall fescue pastures and calf genotype on the subsequent health and performance of steers in the feedlot. In Exp. 1 and 2, Angus steers grazed fescue pastures in Georgia containing low, moderate, or high endophyte infestations for 182 d (Exp. 1) or 78 d (Exp. 2) with 12 steers per treatment. Steers were transported 1,600 km to Texas in October (Exp. 1) and July (Exp. 2), were fed a 93% concentrate diet during the finishing period, and were harvested at an estimated backfat thickness of 12 mm. In both trials, DMI over the entire feeding period and carcass characteristics were not affected (P>0.05) by endophyte infestation. In both trials, pasture ADG decreased, and feedlot ADG and gain to feed ratio increased as the previous pasture endophyte infestation increased (P<0.05). Serum cholesterol concentrations tended (P<0.10) to decrease with increasing endophyte infestation during the first 14 d in the feedlot. In Exp. 3, Angus and Brahman × British crossbred steers grazed fescue pastures in Georgia containing low, moderate, or high endophyte in each of 2 yr. Six steers of each breed group were on each treatment each year. Steers were transported to Texas in late August of each year, were fed a 93% concentrate finishing diet, and were harvested at an estimated individual backfat thickness of 12 mm. As endophyte infestation increased, serum urea N concentrations and gain to feed ratios increased (P<0.05), whereas pasture ADG, initial BW, transit shrink, serum cholesterol concentrations, final BW, and carcass weights decreased (P<0.05) in Angus steers, but not in Brahman-cross steers. In these studies, the adverse effects of high endophyte infestations in fescue pastures appeared to carry over to the feedlot for ca. 14 d. However, steers from highly infested pastures can compensate for poor pasture performance with improved performance in the feedlot when no adverse health effects occur. Any impact of the endophyte seems to be similar in Brahman-cross and Angus steers.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of Mg-mica supplementation on grazing and feedlot performance of stocker steers. In Exp. 1, eight groups of six steers were fed a basal diet of 80% ground grain sorghum, 15% corn silage, and 5% control protein supplement (DM basis) or a supplement containing Mg-mica (9% of supplement; 4.5 mg/kg diet DM) for 141 d. Marbling scores tended (P<0.10) to be greater, and the percentage of carcasses grading USDA Choice or higher was greater (P<0.05), from steers fed Mg-mica than from those fed the control supplement. In Exp. 2, eight groups of nine head each were offered either a control grain sorghum-based supplement or one containing 34 g/d of Mg-mica (2.7 g Mg) while grazing smooth bromegrass pastures for 112 d. Pasture groups were then placed in feedlot pens for 120 d and fed a basal diet similar to that described above. Two groups fed each pasture supplement received a control supplement, and two received a supplement containing Mg-mica (10% of supplement; 5 mg/kg diet DM). Steers fed Mg-mica during the pasture phase tended to have heavier (P=0.11) hot carcass weights, higher (P<0.05) dressing percentages, numerically (P>0.10) higher marbling scores, and a higher percentage of carcasses grading USDA Choice than steers fed the control supplement during the pasture phase. Therefore, adding Mg-mica to pasture supplements or feedlot diets appears to have no impact on grazing or feedlot performance, but may improve carcass quality.  相似文献

In vitro glucose uptake and protein synthesis were measured using serum from feedlot steers fed diets supplemented with organic Cr (OCr); glucose clearance was studied using sheep as a model. Treatments investigated for glucose uptake and protein synthesis were 1) control (0 ppm supplemental Cr), 2) 0.2 ppm supplemental OCr from high Cr yeast, and 3) 0.4 ppm supplemental OCr from high Cr yeast that contained 2,000 ppm Cr (2 mg Cr/g Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast) added to a 90% concentrate feedlot diet. The form of OCr supplied by high Cr yeast is presumably a glucose tolerance factor (GTF), which potentiates the action of insulin, and consists of Cr3+ centrally bound to or associated with cysteine, glutamate, glycine, and nicotinic acid residues. Serum harvested from steers fed 0.2- and 0.4-ppm OCr diets increased (P<0.05) protein synthesis in primary bovine muscle cultures. Glucose uptake rate by muscle cell cultures was increased (P<0.09) by serum from OCr-supplemented steers. Treatments investigated for glucose clearance by lambs were 1) control (0 ppm supplemental Cr), 2) 0.2 ppm, 3) 0.4 ppm, and 4) 0.8 ppm supplemental OCr from high Cr yeast added to a 85% concentrate finishing diet. Glucose clearance in lambs was improved (P<0.05) by addition of 0.2 and 0.8 ppm OCr to the diet. These results are interpreted to suggest that increased carcass muscling in ruminants fed OCr-supplemented diets is a result of improvements in amino acid uptake and glucose metabolism within muscle cells.  相似文献

Longissimus width and depth were measured using ultrasound in steers (n = 174), bulls (n = 323), and heifers (n = 347) at yearling and prior to harvest. Yearling and preharvest muscle dimensions and carcass muscle area of bulls were largest (P<0.01). Steers had wider and deeper (P<0.01) longissimus than heifers at yearling; however, preharvest muscle width and depth and carcass muscle area were greater (P<0.01) for heifers. From yearling to harvest, muscle width of bulls and heifers increased at a similar rate, which was greater (P<0.01) than that of steers. Significant (P<0.01) differences existed for muscle depth increase from yearling to harvest, where bulls had the highest deposition rates, heifers had intermediate rates, and steers had the lowest deposition rates. Correlations of carcass muscle area with muscle depth were large and positive (0.52 to 0.81) and slightly larger than correlations with muscle width (0.51 to 0.74). Muscle depth was the best single predictor of carcass muscle area; however, two-trait prediction models including both muscle width and depth were superior to single-trait prediction models. At yearling (preharvest), predicted and carcass muscle areas differed by more than 9.68 cm2 for less than 2% (5%) of steers and heifers and less than 7% (4%) of bulls. Further, yearling and pre-harvest carcass muscle area predictions were within 4.84 cm2 of carcass measurements for approximately 54 to 65% of all animals, respectively. These results indicate that ultrasound muscle width and depth may be alternative predictors of carcass muscle area and may be useful in selection of potential replacements.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of supplemental betaine on steer performance, fat deposition, and carcass characteristics. In Exp. 1 (grazing phase), 80 steers (317 kg) were fed either 1.0 kg of a control supplement (30% CP) or 1.0 kg of the control supplement plus 20 g of betaine per head per day. Betaine supplementation had no effect on overall gain or fat deposition (P>0.10) but increased ADG (P<0.10) during d 46 to 90 (0.64 vs 0.72 kg; control vs betaine, respectively). The pasture groups remained intact and were moved to the feedlot for 141 d and fed a control diet or the control diet plus 20 g of betaine per head per day. Betaine had no overall effect on finishing gain (P>0.10); however, this response was variable by period. Betaine increased final fat thickness and fat thickness change (P<0.10), but did not affect marbling or longissimus area (P>0.10). Supplemental betaine on pasture increased feed intake, final BW, and hot carcass weight (P<0.05) and increased final fat thickness and fat thickness change (P<0.10) during the finishing phase. In Exp. 2, supplemental betaine (40 g/d) was fed to steers (averaging 584 kg) in 11 replications during the last week before harvest. The overall weighted average increase in dressing percentage when betaine was fed was +0.34% (P<0.05). There was no effect (P>0.10) on fat thickness or marbling. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of an antioxidant (AGRADO®; Solutia Inc., St. Louis, MO) on the growth, gain to feed ratio, and health of receiving calves. In Experiment 1, 96 mixed breed heifer calves (206 ± 1.4 kg initial BW) were purchased at sale barns and delivered as a single group to the research facility near Fayetteville. All heifers were fed a total mixed diet containing 30% cottonseed hulls, 53% cracked corn, and 11% soybean meal for 42 d with either 0 or 150 mg AGRADO®/kg diet. Fewer (P<0.05) of the heifers fed supplemental AGRADO® were treated for respiratory disease (73% vs 83%), and medication cost was lower (P<0.05) for heifers fed supplemental AGRADO ($6.33 vs $9.49 per pen). Supplemental AGRADO® did not affect (P>0.10) ADG, daily feed intake, and gain to feed ratio. In Experiment 2, 86 bull and steer calves (237 ± 2.2 kg initial BW) were managed and fed as in Experiment 1 for a 41-d study. In this trial, supplemental AGRADO® had no significant effect on the number of sick calves or medication costs, but gain to feed ratio was improved (P<0.05) during the first 28 d of the trial. These results indicate that supplemental AGRADO® may improve the health or growth performance of newly received feedlot cattle.  相似文献

Seventy-two Angus crossbred steers (average initial BW, 351 ± 5.5 kg) were used to ascertain the breakpoint in BW above which intramuscular fat deposition was accelerated. Steers were randomly assigned to one of three treatments in an unbalanced study; treatment groups represented a BW at which steers would enter the feedlot (363, 408, or 454 kg). Until entering the feedlot, steers were grazed on pasture and supplemented to achieve 0.8 kg gain/d. Intramuscular fat deposition, measured ultrasonically, and live BW were acquired on d 0 and at 28-d intervals thereafter on each animal until harvest. In the feedlot, steers were fed a 13.4% CP concentrate diet until they reached a final BW of approximately 567 kg. After slaughter, carcass data were collected. No differences (P < 0.05) in ADG on pasture (0.85 ± 0.14 kg) or in the feedlot (1.70 ± 0.07 kg) occurred among treatments. There was good agreement between predicted and measured carcass quality grade (QG) (5.5 and 5.2, respectively). Based on broken-line analysis, deposition of intramuscular fat began to increase at approximately 378 kg regardless of BW at entry into the feedlot. The breakpoint BW for increased intramuscular fat accretion rate was calculated as 64% of mature BW of these steers.  相似文献

Feedlot and carcass traits were evaluated for steers (n = 231) sired by Angus (A), Brangus (BA), Gelbvieh (G), and Gelbray (GB) bulls (n = 29) out of first cross (F1) Brahman-Hereford cows. Steers were produced over 4 y and were born during spring and fall calving seasons. Brahman inheritance was 25% in A- and G-sired steers, and 44% in BA- and GB-sired steers. After weaning, steers were stockered before entering the feedlot. Steers produced in 1993 and 1994 were fed in Louisiana and individually harvested at a targeted backfat thickness of 10 mm. Steers born in 1995 and 1996 were fed in Oklahoma and group harvested at an average backfat thickness of 10 mm. Data were analyzed separately by feedlot location because of significant location and sire breed x location effects. Angus-sired steers had smaller (P<0.05) longissimus areas (LMA) and higher (P<0.01) marbling scores(MS) and quality grades than G-sired steers across both locations. Tenderness was more desirable (P<0.05) for A-sired steers compared with G-sired steers when fed in Louisiana. Angus- and G-sired steers had larger (P<0.01) LMA than BA- and GB-sired steers across both locations. Tenderness was similar (P>0.10) between steers with 25% and 44% Brahman inheritance. These data suggest that more desirable carcass quality and tenderness can be achieved with the use of A sires, relative to the other sire breeds, when mated to F1 Brahman-Hereford dams. Improved carcass cutability resulted with the use of G sires, and in steers with 25% Brahman inheritance.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the use of an enzymatically digested animal protein (EDAP) as a source of protein for weanling pigs. In each experiment, treatments were replicated with four (Experiments 1 and 2) or seven (Experiment 3) pens of three to five pigs each. Each experiment lasted 3 to 4 wk for the combined Phase I (1.5% Lys in Experiments 1 and 2, 1.6% Lys in Experiment 3) and Phase II (1.3% Lys) periods. In Experiments 1 (6.7 kg; 23 d of age) and 2 (6.1 kg; 22 d of age), pigs were fed one of the following Phase I diets: 1) basal (B) diet containing corn, soybean meal (SBM), whey, fish meal, and blood cells (AP-301 G; American Protein Corporation, Ames, IA); 2) B + 4% spray-dried animal plasma (SDAP); or 3) B + 2% SDAP + 2% EDAP (SDAP + EDAP). In Phase II, the dietary groups from Phase I were divided into two subsequent groups. One group received a diet containing corn, SBM, whey, fish meal, and 2% blood cells, and the second group received the same diet with 2% EDAP, resulting in six treatments for Phase II and overall periods. In Experiment 1, ADG and ADFI were increased (P<0.10) during Phase I for pigs fed SDAP + EDAP, and ADFI was increased (P<0.10) in pigs fed SDAP. In Phase II, the EDAP addition did not affect (P>0.10) ADG, ADFI, or the ratio of gain to feed. Also, Phase I diets did not affect (P>0.10) growth performance during Phase II. Overall, ADG (P<0.10) and ADFI (P<0.04) were increased (P<0.10) in pigs fed SDAP + EDAP during Phase I. In Experiment 2, ADG and the ratio of gain to feed were increased (P<0.10) in pigs fed SDAP + EDAP during Phase I. During Phase II, ADFI was increased in pigs fed SDAP + EDAP or B + SDAP (P<0.01) relative to those fed B only (P<0.003) in Phase I. Also in Phase II, the ratio of gain to feed was increased in pigs fed SDAP + EDAP (P<0.03) relative to those fed B + SDAP. Overall, ADG and the ratio of gain to feed were not affected (P>0.10) by diet, but ADFI was increased (P<0.03) in pigs fed SDAP + EDAP relative to those fed B. In Experiment 3, all pigs (5.7 kg; 17 d of age) were fed a common Phase I diet containing SDAP + EDAP. In Phase II, ADG, ADFI, and the ratio of gain to feed were not affected (P>0.10) by the addition of 2% EDAP or 2% blood cells. In summary, pigs fed SDAP + EDAP perform equally well compared with those fed B + SDAP.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of pre-weaning vitamin E, Se, and Cu supplementation on performance and immune response in stressed calves. In Exp. 1, 71 Hereford x Angus calves were individually creep fed: 1) control supplement (CON), 2) control plus 500 IU vitamin E + 0.3 mg Se/kg DM (E), 3) control plus 10 mg Cu/kg DM (CU), or 4) a combination of E and CU treatments (ECU). In Exp. 2, 80 Hereford (Angus calves were individually creep fed: 1) control supplement (CON), 2) control plus 0.3 mg Se/kg DM (SE), 3) control plus 500 IU vitamin E + 0.3 mg Se/kg DM (LOWE), 4) control plus 1000 IU vitamin E + 0.3 mg Se/kg DM (MEDE), or 5) control plus 1500 IU vitamin E + 0.3 mg Se/kg DM (HIE). Treatments continued for 49 (Exp. 1) or 53 d (Exp. 2) prior to weaning. At weaning all calves were transported to feedlot facilities. In Exp. 1, vitamin E tended (P<0.09) to improve post-weaning ADG and reduce (P<0.06) plasma haptoglobin (Hp), but had no effect on plasma α-tocopherol. Dietary Cu tended to increase (P<0.01) liver Cu stores, and antibody titers to bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) were greater (P<0.04) at weaning in CU and E calves. In Exp. 2, vitamin E tended to increase serum α-tocopherol (P<0.06) and cortisol (P<0.08). Vitamin E and Se supplementation may improve post-weaning performance and decrease plasma Hp concentrations in stressed calves.  相似文献

A study was conducted to compare the effects of three supplemental zinc sources on beef steers grazing winter annual pasture and during receiving in a feedlot. In southern Arkansas, 84 steers were weighed (BW = 216 ± 1.5 kg), bled via jugular puncture, and randomly assigned to 12 bermudagrass pastures (0.81 ha each) that had been overseeded with wheat, rye, and annual ryegrass (7 steers per pasture; 116 d of grazing) on January 15; the steers were allowed to graze until May 11. Steers were fed 0.45 kg daily of corn-based supplement containing 103 mg zinc from ZnSO4, zinc amino acid complex (ZnAA), or zinc polysaccharide (ZnPOL) during the entire grazing period. On May 12, steers were shipped to a research feedlot (14 h; 1,016 km; 6.9% BW shrink) in northeast New Mexico. In the feedlot, the same groups of steers were fed a receiving diet (steam-flaked milo) that contained the same zinc sources as fed during the grazing period. Dietary concentrate was increased from 75 to 85% of dietary DM weekly. Data were analyzed as a completely random design; least squares means were separated using contrast. Steer BW on d 28 and 84 of the grazing period were greater (P<0.05) for cattle fed ZnAA and ZnPOL than for steers fed ZnSO4; however, ADG over the 116 d of grazing and ending BW did not differ (P>0.28) among zinc sources. In the feedlot, steer BW, ADG, and feed efficiency did not differ (P>0.05) among zinc sources. Serum zinc concentrations did not differ (P>0.05) among zinc sources at any point in time. We conclude that early in the grazing period, ZnAA and ZnPOL improved steer BW compared with ZnSO4; however, no differences were noted among zinc sources later in the grazing period or during receiving in the feedlot.  相似文献

Three experiments were conducted to determine the effect of a hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicate (HSCA) on growth and carcass traits of finishing pigs. In Experiment 1, 32 barrows (initial weight = 26.7 kg) were fed one of two dietary treatments: 1) a corn-soybean meal basal (B) diet or 2) B + 0.50% HSCA. In Experiments 2 and 3, 64 barrows and gilts were used in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Two percentages of HSCA (0 or 0.50%) were fed to barrows or gilts. In Experiment 1, average daily gain, feed intake, gain:feed, serum urea nitrogen (SUN) concentration, and carcass traits were not affected (P>0.10) by HSCA. Leaf fat weight was decreased (P<0.08) in pigs fed HSCA. In Experiments 2 and 3, no HSCA × gender interactions (P>0.10) were present; thus, barrow and gilt data were combined. In Experiment 2, average daily gain, feed intake, gain:feed, SUN, and carcass traits were not affected (P>0.10) by HSCA. In Experiment 3, average daily gain, feed intake, and gain:feed were not affected (P>0.10) by HSCA. Serum urea nitrogen was increased (P<0.05) in pigs fed HSCA. Carcass traits were not affected (P>0.10) by HSCA, with the exception of increased (P<0.10) total carcass fat (total body electrical conductivity) in pigs fed HSCA. Pork quality score for color was increased (P<0.09) in pigs fed HSCA, but scores for marbling and firmness-wetness were not affected (P>0.10). In summary, HSCA did not affect growth performance or consistently affect carcass traits.  相似文献

Thirty-four Holstein cows, 18 primiparous and 16 multiparous, were used to determine the effects of supplemental Cr on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism during the transition period. From approximately 3 wk prior to anticipated calving date until parturition, Cr-treated cows were given 51 mg Cr picolinate via a gelatin capsule bolus three times weekly, equivalent to an average daily intake of approximately 2 ppm Cr. Control cows were given empty gelatin capsules. All cows were fed total mixed rations, with one ration fed to dry cows, a second to lactating cows for wk 1 of postpartum (transition), and a third to lactating cows thereafter. Blood samples were collected via jugular venipuncture at 1, 2, and 3 wk prior to anticipated calving date as well as immediately following calving, 3 d post calving, and 1, 2, and 3 wk post calving. Samples were analyzed for glucose, insulin, and nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA). Within 1 wk prior to calving, a frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test was performed, and blood plasma samples were analyzed for concentrations of glucose and insulin. Plasma glucose response to the frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test was evaluated by calculating the half-life and fractional turnover rate for the period from 2 to 19 min after glucose infusion. Supplemental Cr did not affect circulating concentrations of glucose, insulin, or NEFA (P>0.1). Plasma NEFA concentrations were greater in primiparous cows (P<0.01) throughout the experiment, with the difference being most apparent during the 3 wk postpartum. Glucose concentrations reached a greater peak at time of calving in primiparous cows than in multiparous cows (P=0.07). There was an increase in glucose clearance rate (P=0.06) and a trend toward decreased glucose half-life (P<0.1) in primiparous cows supplemented with Cr. Insulin peak concentrations were unaffected by treatment or parity (P>0.1). Data suggest that Cr supplementation may alter carbohydrate metabolism in primiparous cows during the transition period.  相似文献

Our objective was to compare the performance of weaned steer calves managed with intensive-early stocking (IES; 12.4 steers per ha for 70 d) or season-long stocking (SLS; 6.2 steers per ha for 140 d) with and without supplementation (2 × 2 factorial). Beginning on May 15, 90 steers (BW = 217 ± 0.8 kg) were randomly assigned to one of 12 common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers.) pastures (0.81 ha each) fertilized with 168 kg of nitrogen/ha. One of the following four treatments was randomly applied to three pastures: i) SLS plus no supplement, ii) SLS plus 0.45 kg/steer of ground corn daily, iii) IES plus no supplement, and iv) IES plus 0.45 kg/steer of ground corn daily. Steers on IES were lighter (P=0.01) than SLS steers on d 70. By d 140, SLS steers supplemented with corn were 33 kg heavier (P=0.02) than nonsupplemented steers. When using SLS, corn increased the BW gain 0.5 kg/kg of corn fed; however, when IES was used, there was no benefit from corn supplementation. Total BW gain/ha did not differ (P>0.17) among treatments, but SLS with corn supplementation could have the potential to produce more BW gain/ha compared to the other treatments. Grazing systems did not affect feedlot ADG (P>0.53), but IES (175 d on feed) steers did have a higher (P<0.01) feedlot total BW gain than the SLS steers (154 d on feed). Using IES positively affected (P<0.08) dressing percentage and longissimus area compared to SLS; however, these differences in carcass characteristics were probably the result of the longer feeding period.  相似文献

Early-weaned Angus x Simmental heifers were used to evaluate the effects of postweaning nutritional management on feedlot performance, carcass merit, and the relationship of intramuscular and subcutaneous fat deposition to the feed efficiency among heifers fed for a high-quality market. Sixteen heifers were weaned at 73+/-5.5 d of age and grazed on endophyte-infected tall fescue for 18 mo before entering the feedlot (early-weaned-P). Eighty heifers from the following year's calf crop were weaned at 71+/-5.5 d of age and allowed either ad libitum access to a 25% concentrate diet (early-weaned-25C) or limit-fed a 90% concentrate diet (early-weaned-90C) to achieve a similar ADG. Following a 119-d growing period, 16 early-weaned-90C and 16 early-weaned-25C calves were paired based on BW and growth rate and individually fed during the finishing period along with the early-weaned-P heifers. Ultrasound measurements of s.c. and i.m. fat were recorded at approximately 60-d intervals throughout the finishing period. Feed efficiency was regressed against s.c. and i.m. fat, and i.m. fat was regressed on s.c. fat. Despite a similar ADG, early-weaned-90C calves gained more efficiently (P < or = 0.05) in the feedlot than early-weaned-25C calves. Heifers finished as yearlings tended (P < or = 0.10) to gain faster but gained less efficiently (P < or = 0.01) than early-weaned-90C heifers finished as calves. The rate of s.c. and i.m. fat deposition was similar between early-weaned-90C and early-weaned-25C heifer calves. The calves were grouped together for comparison to yearlings. Feed efficiency decreased quadratically (P < or = 0.01) as s.c. fat cover increased. The rate at which feed efficiency decreased relative to increasing s.c. fat cover was similar regardless of age at feedlot entry. However, heifers finished as calves gained more efficiently (P < or = 0.01) than yearlings at any given fat thickness. Feed efficiency decreased linearly (P < or = 0.01) as i.m. fat increased among heifers finished as calves. Additionally, heifers finished as calves deposited i.m. fat at a faster rate relative to s.c. fat (P < or = 0.01) than yearlings. These data suggest that heifers finished as calves produce high-quality carcasses with less s.c. fat cover while gaining more efficiently than heifers finished as yearlings.  相似文献

Magnesium supplementation has been shown to benefit feedlot cattle and is typically added at high concentrations to mineral supplements for calves grazing wheat pasture. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of Mg-mica supplementation on performance and serum mineral concentrations of stocker calves grazing wheat pasture. Supplemental Mg was provided at 6.1 g/d of supplemental Mg/ animal, Monday through Friday. In Exp. 1, 36 mixed-breed stocker calves (243 ± 3.9 kg BW) were stratified by BW and gender and allocated randomly to one of nine groups of four animals for a 112-d grazing study. Weight gain, shrink percentage, and serum Mg, Ca, K, Cu, and Zn concentrations did not differ (P>0.10) among calves fed either weathered Mg-mica (WMM), unweathered Mg-mica (UMM), or MgO. All serum mineral concentrations were within normal physiological ranges. In Exp. 2, 64 mixed-breed stocker steers (275 ± 1.7 kg BW) were stratified by BW and allocated randomly to one of 16 groups of four animals. Weight gain during a 50-d grazing study and subsequent feedlot period did not differ (P>0.10) among calves fed either no added Mg source or WMM, UMM, or MgO. Serum Cu was higher (P<0.05), and serum Mg was lower (P<0.05), from steers fed MgO, but all serum mineral concentrations were within normal physiological ranges. Although Mg-mica is relatively high in Fe (4%), using it as a supplemental Mg source appeared to have no negative impact on growth performance or serum mineral concentrations of calves grazing wheat pasture.  相似文献

Objectives of this study were to evaluate synchronization, conception, and pregnancy rates of heifers synchronized with melengestrol acetate (MGA)-prostaglandin F (PGF,), Select Synch, or Select Synch preceded by MGA (MGA-Select Synch). Heifers in the MGA-PGF group (n = 209; BW = 378 kg) received MGA (0.5 mg/ d per heifer) for 14 d and PGF (25 mg) 19 d later. Select Synch heifers (n = 213; BW = 374 kg) received gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH; 100 μg) followed by PGF (25 mg) 7 d later. The MGA-Select Synch heifers (n = 210; BW = 373 kg) were fed MGA (0.5 mg/d per heifer) for 7 d, GnRH (100 μg) the day following the last MGA feeding, and PGF (25 mg) 7 d after GnRH. More (P<0.01) heifers were in estrus 1 to 4 d before PGF2a administration in both the Select Synch (20%) and MGA-Select Synch (24%) groups than in the MGA-PGF (4%) group. Pregnancy rates for heifers in estrus early (d 1 to 4 before PGF) were greater (P<0.05) for both Select Synch (55%) and MGA-Select Synch (63%) compared with MGA-PGF heifers (18%). Synchronization rate (detected after PGF) was greater (P<0.01) for MGA-PGF heifers (86%) compared with Select Synch (66%) and MGA-Select Synch (68%) heifers; however, conception rate did not differ (P=0.13) and averaged 72, 63, and 62% for MGA-PGF, Select Synch, and MGA-Select Synch heifers, respectively. Select Synch (52%), MGA-Select Synch (58%), and MGA-PGF protocols (61%) provided similar (P=0.18) overall AI pregnancy rates; however, more heifers were in estrus before PGF administration in protocols using GnRH.  相似文献

Heifer and steer progeny of 2-yr-old first-cross (F1) heifers and 3- to 6-yr-old F1 cows, from Hereford dams and five sire breeds, were evaluated for postweaning feedlot growth and carcass composition. Breeds of sire of dam were Angus (A), Red Poll (RP), Tarentaise (T), Simmental (Sm), and Pinzgauer (P). Calves from 2-yr-old heifers were sired by Shorthorn, and calves from 3- to 6-yr-old dams were sired by Charolais. Breed of sire of dam was significant (P less than .05 to P less than .01) for total gain and final weight for female progeny from 2-yr-old dams. At all weights, Sm, P, and T ranked above A and RP. Progeny of A, P, Sm, and T F1 2-yr-old dams were not significantly different but were higher (P less than .05) than RP heifers in total feedlot gain. Breed of sire of dam was significant (P less than .05) for carcass weight and longissimus muscle area; T ranked highest and RP lowest. Breed was not significant for any growth traits of steer progeny of 2-yr-old dams. Breed was significant for marbling score; A ranked highest and exceeded (P less than .01) both RP and Sm steers. Breed was significant (P less than .05) for most growth traits in the heifer progeny of the 3- to 6-yr-old dams bred to Charolais sires. Heifer calves of the Sm group were heavier (P less than .05) than all other groups for most weights and total gain. For total gain, P and T were intermediate and A and RP lowest. For heifer carcass traits from 3- to 6-yr-old dams, breed was significant (P less than .05 to P less than .01) for carcass weight, longissimus muscle area, percentage of cutability, and estimated kidney, heart, and pelvic fat. Heifers from Sm-sired dams were heavier (P less than .05) than those from all other groups but ranked second to heifers from P for percentage of cutability. Marbling scores of RP heifer carcasses ranked highest of all groups. Breed was not significant (P greater than .05) for any of the weights or gains in steer progeny of 3- to 6-yr-old dams; however, the Sm and P groups ranked above A and RP for all feedlot test weights.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted (Exp. 1, n = 63; Exp. 2, n = 72) using Angus x Hereford cows grazing Oklahoma dormant tallgrass prairie to determine the effects of increasing supplemental undegradable intake protein (UIP) on performance. In each experiment following parturition (February and March), cows were blocked by body weight, body condition score (BCS), and calving date and randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments. For Exp. 1, supplements provided 396 g/d of degradable intake protein (DIP) with increasing amounts of UIP (211, 274, 337, and 400 g/d, respectively). For Exp. 2, supplements provided 281 g/d of DIP with 142, 196, 248, and 301 g/d UIP, respectively. Cows were individually fed 1.59 kg supplement 6 d/wk. Body weight and BCS were determined biweekly until the end of supplementation (Exp. 1, 37 + 1.5 d; Exp. 2, 45 + 1.2 d). Milk production was estimated 30 and 45 d postpartum. Plasma progesterone concentrations were quantified weekly to determine interval to first normal luteal function (PPI). Weight loss, BCS, and PPI were not influenced by treatment. In Exp. 2, there was a linear (P<0.08) decrease in weight gain of calves post-treatment to weaning as supplemental UIP increased, and a quadratic effect (P<0.06) of additional UIP on milk production at 30 d postpartum. In these experiments, metabolizable protein requirements were met by microbial protein, forage UIP, and a minimum of 142 g of supplemental UIP.  相似文献
