1. Estimates of heritability, genetic and phenotypic correlations of performance and meat quality traits were obtained in a population of Japanese quail using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) procedures.

2. The heritability estimates for body weight (BW) traits ranged from 0·15 at hatch to 0·42 at six weeks. For carcase composition traits, heritability estimates ranged from 0·12 for carcase yield to 0·26 for abdominal fat yield and for meat quality traits they ranged from 0·18 for drip loss to 0·54 for yellowness of the meat.

3. Negative genetic correlations were found between BW and carcase traits with ultimate pH and drip loss ranging from ?0·01 (BW at hatch) to ?0·40 (skin yield). Redness and yellowness showed negative genetic correlations with BW and carcase traits, whereas the genetic correlations with lightness were positive (from 0·04 to 0·43).

4. Shear force and cooking loss showed positive genetic correlations with carcase, breast, abdominal and skin yield.

5. In conclusion, meat quality traits have the potential to be improved through genetic selection but selection for higher BW and carcase composition may reduce the meat quality of Japanese quail through reducing redness, ultimate pH and intramuscular fat and increasing lightness, shear force and cooking loss of the meat.  相似文献

1. Activities of lipogenic enzymes and plasma very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) concentrations were measured in lines of chickens with large differences in food conversion efficiency (FCE) and body fat.

2. Hepatic activities of malate dehydrogenase [EC 1.1.1.40 (MD)] and ATP citrate lyase [EC 4.1.3.8 (CL)] were correlated with the proportion of both abdominal and total body fat (r = 0·50) but were poorly correlated with gain:food ratio.

3. Activities of MD and CL in plasma were low and variable and were not correlated with any other characteristics.

4. Plasma VLDL concentration was significantly correlated with the proportion of abdominal and total body fat (r = 0·59), and gain: food ratio (r = 0·36).

1. Colour (L*, a*, b*), pH and weight changes during tumbling, overnight holding and cooking were measured in pale, soft and exudative (PSE, L*?>?58); normal; and dark, firm and dry (DFD, L*?n?=?180) subject to tumbling in a low salt (4%), phosphate-free marinade at three target addition levels: 0, 10 and 20%.

2. The mean L* values for PSE, normal and DFD fillets were 60·1, 56·0 and 51·7 respectively, with corresponding mean pH values of 5·73, 5·85 and 6·07.

3. There were no significant differences in marinade uptake during tumbling for the three groups of fillets. Losses during overnight holding were highest for the PSE fillets, but losses for all three colour groups were relatively small (<2%).

4. Cooking losses for fillets of normal colour were 19·7, 24·1 and 26·2% at 0, 10 and 20% addition levels respectively, with corresponding yields of 80·3, 82·8 and 84·8%.

5. PSE fillets had higher cooking losses and lower yields than normal fillets (and DFD fillets had lower cooking losses and higher yields than normal fillets) but the differences were small and not always significant (P? 6. There was a strong negative correlation between pH and L* (r?=??0·82) in the raw fillets, but weaker correlations of yield with L* (r?=??0·53) and pH (r?=?0·38) in the cooked fillets.  相似文献

1. Simultaneous changes of cloacal gland area (CGA) and plasma luteinising hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone (T), prolactin (PRL), thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) during photo-induced testicular growth and regression were measured in commercially bred Japanese quail from a heavy body weight line.

2. Somatically mature male Japanese quail were transferred from short days (light:dark 8L:16D) at 10°C, to long days (16L:8D) at 20°C; and sexually mature male Japanese quail were transferred from long to short days. All variables were measured at transfer and every 5?d thereafter for 35?d.

3. Transfer from short to long days caused significant increases in LH, FSH, T and testis weight (TW) after 5?d, and in CGA after 10?d. T3 decreased after 5?d, whereas T4 increased significantly after 25 long days and PRL did not undergo any consistent change. The testicular growth rate was k?=?0·1146.

4. Transferring quail from long to short days caused significant decreases in LH and FSH after 5?d, and decreases in T, TW and CGA after 10?d. T4 decreased after 5?d whilst T3 increased significantly by day 15. PRL decreased significantly after 10?d then rose before declining again. The testicular regression rate was k?=?0·0582.

5. The rates of photo-induced testicular development and regression in a strain of large Japanese quail did not differ from rates reported for other strains of quail. CGA was a better indicator of TW than plasma T concentrations during growth and regression. The role of PRL in photo-induced reproductive cycles in male Japanese quail remains to be determined.

6. The photoperiod-induced changes in gonad size and hormone concentrations, together provide valuable information that can be used in future studies of the endocrinology and neuroendocrinology of photoperiodism in birds.  相似文献

1. Excessive deposition of body fat, especially abdominal fat, is detrimental in chickens and the prevention of excessive fat accumulation is an important problem. The aim of this study was to identify blood biochemical indicators that could be used as criteria to select lean Yellow-feathered chicken lines.

2. Levels of blood biochemical indicators in the fed and fasted states and the abdominal fat traits were measured in 332 Guangxi Yellow chickens. In the fed state, the genetic correlations (rg) of triglycerides and very low density lipoprotein levels were positive for the abdominal fat traits (0.47 ≤ rg ≤ 0.67), whereas total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) showed higher negative correlations with abdominal fat traits (–0.59 ≤ rg ≤ ?0.33). Heritabilities of these blood biochemical parameters were high, varying from 0.26 to 0.60.

3. In the fasted state, HDL-C:LDL-C level was positively correlated with abdominal fat traits (0.35 ≤ rg ≤ 0.38), but triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, total protein, albumin, aspartate transaminase, uric acid and creatinine levels were negatively correlated with abdominal fat traits (–0.79 ≤ rg ≤ ?0.35). The heritabilities of these 10 blood biochemical parameters were high (0.22 ≤ h2 ≤ 0.59).

4. In the fed state, optimal multiple regression models were constructed to predict abdominal fat traits by using triglycerides and LDL-C. In the fasted state, triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, total protein, albumin and uric acid could be used to predict abdominal fat content.

5. It was concluded that these models in both nutritional states could be used to predict abdominal fat content in Guangxi Yellow broiler chickens.  相似文献

1. A study was carried out to evaluate the expression of growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), mitochondrial adenine nucleotide translocase (ANT), cytochrome oxidase III (COX III) and avian uncoupling protein (avUCP) genes in 14-d-old Japanese quail that were fed different levels of glycerol (0%, 4%, and 12% dietary glycerol) which replaced maize as an energy source.

2. Total RNA was extracted from the breast muscle, and cDNA was amplified using real-time PCR with primers specific to the examined genes.

3. Quail fed the diet with 12% glycerol supplementation presented higher growth hormone (GH) mRNA expression than did those fed 0% glycerol. Supplementation with 12% glycerol negatively influenced IGF-I mRNA expression and reduced ANT mRNA expression in comparison with the treatment with no glycerol. COX III mRNA expression in the pectoralis superficialis muscle was decreased by 26% in quail fed 12% glycerol compared with those fed 0 and 4% glycerol.

4. There was no difference in UCP mRNA expression between quail fed 0 and 4% glycerol; however, UCP expression was reduced (73%) in birds fed the 12% glycerol diet compared with the level in those fed the 4% glycerol diet.

5. The inclusion of 4% glycerol in the diet produced results similar to those of the diet with no glycerol. Based on quail performance and the expression of the GH, IGF-I, ANT, COX III and UCP genes, 4% glycerol can be used in quail feeding without any harmful effects.  相似文献

1. The aim of this study was to evaluate the amount and quality of genomic DNA isolated from embryos and their chorioallantoic membranes (CAM) and to investigate the utility of different PCR methods for identifying the sex of Japanese quail embryos.

2. Fertilised eggs were incubated at 37°C for 120?h and DNA was isolated from samples of embryos and CAM. Target regions of the CHD-W gene or XhoI repeat sequence were amplified by PCR and examined on agarose gels or by using a capillary electrophoresis system.

3. DNA samples from embryos had significantly higher OD260 values than those from CAM, while OD260/280 values were not significantly different between embryos and CAM.

4. Gender identification was not possible by PCR amplification of the CHD gene region or XhoI repeat sequences examined on agarose gels, whereas males and females of Japanese quail were distinguishable when PCR products of the CHD gene were separated by capillary electrophoresis.

5. The results showed that high molecular weight DNA could be isolated from both embryo and CAM of Japanese quail. DNA isolated from CAM could be used for molecular genetic studies where embryos would be used for other purposes, such as in situ hybridisation. A capillary electrophoresis system could be used for identifying the gender of Japanese quail embryos.  相似文献

1. The objective of this study was to examine the beneficial effects of kaempferol, a naturally occurring polyphenol, on carcase characteristics in broiler chickens and the mechanisms involved in this regulation.

2. Broiler chickens were randomly divided into 7 groups: control, carrier control, kaempferol (0·3%), kaempferol (0·6%), hypercholesterolemic (HLD), HLD and kaempferol (0·3%), HLD and kaempferol (0·6%).

3. Seven weeks after treatment, carcase characteristics, lipid levels in the blood and liver, expression of hepatic Angiopoietin-like protein 3 (ANGPTL3) mRNA, and expression of adipose lipoprotein lipase (LPL) protein were determined.

4. Treatment with kaempferol (0·3 or 0·6%) significantly increased plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, decreased percentage of abdominal fat, thickness of subcutaneous fat, plasma and hepatic total cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations, muscle malondialdehyde level and down-regulated expression of ANGPTL3 mRNA concomitantly with up-regulated expression of LPL protein in normal and hypercholesterolemic broiler chickens.

5. Kaempferol (0·3 or 0·6%) treatment had no significant effect on the values of percentage of breast muscle, percentage of leg muscle, carcase weight and eviscerated percentage.

6. The results suggest that kaempferol improves carcase characteristics by decreasing expression of ANGPTL3 in broiler chickens.  相似文献

1. In two trials, each using 960 male broilers from 21 to 42 d of age increasing dietary protein from 175 to 220 g/kg at equal ME increased body‐weight gain from 986 to 1090 g and gain:food ratio from 0·439 to 0·499, while abdominal fat pad weights (40·7 to 35·2 g) and total carcass fat content (140 to 118 g/kg) decreased.

2. From 42 to 49 d gain: food ratio increased with increasing protein content, while body‐weight gain and abdominal fat were not affected.

3. Broilers fed on the lower‐protein diet from 21 to 42 d showed compensatory growth during the finisher phase (371 versus 331 g gained) and utilised food more efficiently (0·383 versus 0·340 g gained/g food consumed).

4. Decisions regarding nutrient concentrations during grower and finisher phases should take into account compensatory growth and food utilisation as well as body‐weight gain, food consumption and carcass composition.

1. Male and female broilers of a pure line were selected over three generations on the basis of high or low plasma very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) concentration at 7 weeks of age.

2. Heritability of plasma VLDL was high (h 2 = 0·50 ± 0·08) and by the third generation mean values in the two lines differed by a factor of 2·5.

3. Correlated responses to selection for low plasma VLDL included a relative decrease in abdominal fat and total body lipid and an increase in body protein, together with improvements in the conversion efficiences of food and dietary protein.

4. There was no difference between the lines in 7‐week body weight.

1. Hatching time, hatchability of fertile eggs and embryo mortality under standard egg storage (1 or 5 days at 12?±?1°C and 55% relative humidity) and incubation conditions (37·5?±?0·2°C and 50% relative humidity) were analysed in lines long-term selected for high (HG) and low (LG) relative weight gain between 11 and 28?d of age, respectively, and constant body weight at 49?d of age.

2. Egg storage duration did not have an effect on average hatching time. LG quail, characterised by a fast postnatal growth rate immediately after hatching, hatched earlier than HG quail with a low early growth rate (about 391 vs. 406?h after egg setting, respectively).

3. In contrast to hatching time, the hatchability of fertile eggs was influenced by line as well as egg storage duration. Extended storage decreased hatching success in both lines. However, LG eggs exhibited a higher hatchability than HG eggs (1?d storage: 96·0 vs. 82·5%; 5?d storage: 88·7 vs. 72·7%, respectively).

4. Lower hatchability resulted mostly from a higher frequency of embryo death during early (up to d 7) and late (d 14 and later) phases of incubation.

5. An inadequate nutrient supply to embryos in consequence of developmental delay seems to be a key factor decreasing viability of embryos during incubation.  相似文献

  1. This study had the aim of evaluating the effects of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) on performance, carcass characteristics, some blood parameters and antibody titre against sheep red blood cells (SRBC) in quail.

  2. A total of 240 quail chicks were allotted to 4 treatments consisting of respectively 0, 1, 2 and 4 g/kg dietary MCFA.

  3. There were no significant differences in body weight, feed intake and feed conversion ratio among treatments at different stages of the experiment.

  4. MCFAs had no significant effect on breast, thigh, liver, spleen and bursa of Fabricius weight ratios. However, the relative weight of abdominal fat significantly decreased in quail receiving 0.2 and 0.4 MCFA as compared to other treatments.

  5. Concentrations of low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides and total cholesterol were decreased and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol was increased in quail chicks receiving MCFA compared with control quail chicks. The concentrations of SRBC antibody were not statistically different among treatments.

  6. It is concluded that MCFA significantly decreased LDL, triglycerides, cholesterol and abdominal fat and increased HDL in quail chicks.

Effects of a commercial probiotic, Bacillus cereus toyoi on abdominal fat accumulation in the Japanese quail fed either a commercial control diet (crude protein (CP), 23.5%; metabolizable energy (ME), 11.7MJ/kg) or a high‐energy diet (CP, 23.0%; ME, 13.8MJ/kg) were investigated. Four‐week‐old male birds (n = 108) were divided into four diet groups: control diet, control with probiotic, high‐energy diet and high‐energy diet with probiotic. At 8 weeks and 12 weeks of age (4 and 8 weeks of probiotic supplementation period, respectively), abdominal fat, muscles and the liver were weighed. The weight of total fat and protein in the muscles and liver were also determined. A rectal temperature was recorded weekly. Bodyweight and feed intake in both diets were not affected by probiotic supplementation. At 8 weeks of age, birds fed the control diet with probiotic had significantly less abdominal fat than those fed without the probiotic, and a similar tendency was seen for both diet groups at 12 weeks of age. The decrease in abdominal fat coincided with an increase in rectal temperature. These results suggest that greater metabolizable energy was consumed through elevation of heat production by supplementation of B. cereus toyoi, with hardly any energy stored as body fat. Probiotic supplementation appears to induce greater muscle weight, higher protein and lower lipid content in muscles by 8 weeks of age, and lower lipid content in muscles and greater liver weight by 12 weeks of age, in the Japanese quail.  相似文献

1. The objective of this study was to determine muscle structure and gene expression in pectoralis major (p. major) muscle of broilers in response to deep pectoral myopathy (DPM) induction.

2. A total of 160 chickens from slow- and fast-growing broilers were raised under same conditions. Half of the broilers from each strain were encouraged to wing flap when they reached 2800 g body weight. Pectoralis minor (p. minor) muscle of the broilers was inspected for the occurrence of DPM and p. major samples were collected from broilers with or without DPM. The muscle fibre area and number, capillary number and the signalling pathways of vascular development (vascular endothelial growth factor A, VEGFA) and muscle contraction regulation (actin alpha 1, ACTA1; myosin light chain kinase 2, MYLK2 and ATPase Ca+2 transporting gene 1, ATP2A1) were studied in p. major muscle.

3. DPM induction increased fibre area of p. major muscle with a greater rate in the slow-growing strain compared with fast-growing line. Although the capillary number was higher in slow-growing compared with fast-growing broilers, in the case of DPM induction, the number of capillaries was similar between strains.

4. Expression of VEGFA, MYLK2 and ATP2A1 was greater in slow- than in fast-growing broilers. DPM induction increased expression of ACTA1, VEGFA and ATP2A1 in p. major muscle of broilers from both strains; however, MYLK2 expression was downregulated.

5. Changes in capillary density and expression of VEGFA found in the p. major muscle of broilers with DPM suggest increased blood flow to increase oxygen availability. The upregulation of ATP2A1 by DPM induction could be attributable to alterations in calcium ion transportation from the cytoplasm into the sarcoplasmic reticulum.

6. The results are evidence of changes in muscle structure and gene expression pathways in p. major muscle of broilers with DPM.  相似文献

1. The effects of enzymatically hydrolysed whole Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast (HY) and the pellets of yeast cell wall (YCW) on production traits, the microbiology and histo-morphology of the small intestine, and humoral immune responses against Newcastle disease virus (NDV), of Ross 308 broilers were investigated.

2. The control group received a maize-soyabean meal based basal diet for 42 days. In the treated groups the basal diet was supplemented with 1?g/kg of HY and YCW. There were 8 replicate pens per group (n?=?12 birds/pen).

3. HY and YCW supplementation improved live weight (P?=?0·006) and FCR (P?=?0·003) at 42-d as compared with the control group.

4. In the small intestine, Salmonella spp and Escherichia coli numbers were higher (P?=?0·01) in the mucosa and lower (P?=?0·01) in the digesta of the HY and the YCW fed groups at 25?d of age. Lactobacillus in the duodenal and jejunal digesta was higher (P?

5. Following oral challenge with Salmonella pullorum, Escherichia coli and Lactobacillus increased (P?P?

6. Supplementation of HY and YCW increased villus height in the jejunum (P?=?0·02), width of villus in the ileum (P?=?0·034) and number of goblet cells in villi of the jejunum (P?=?0·006) and ileum (P?=?0·01).

7. YCW increased antibody level against NDV at 21 and 42?d of age compared with the control and the HY supplemented diets (P?

8. It was concluded that HY and YCW improved growth and feed efficiency in broilers, and considering the improvements in production traits and humoral immune responses, yeast cell wall may be a better dietary tool than the hydrolysed whole yeast cell as a performance enhancer for broilers.  相似文献

1. Behavioural and neural responses of 65 broilers to head-to-cloaca electrical stunning were evaluated and meat quality was assessed on two groups of 25 broilers stunned either head to cloaca, or in a conventional water bath method.

2. On the EEG recordings, a general epileptiform insult was observed when applying a current of 100?mA (100?Hz) or 70?mA (70?Hz) for 1·5?s. This general epileptiform insult shows a tonic, clonic and exhaustion phase followed by spikes of alpha, beta, theta and delta waves with duration of on average 34?±?12?s and 39?±?23?s respectively. These birds may have been unconscious for 20?s or longer, according to the correlation dimension analyses.

3. The heart rate decreased significantly (P? 4. Within a confidence limit of 95%, taking into account the number of animals with a reliable EEG, the chance of an effective stun of all broilers lies between 0·9 and 1·0?with a current of 70?mA (100?Hz for 1·5?s; n?=?28) and with 100?mA (100?Hz for 1·5?s; n?=?27).

5. The shear force of breast fillets was slightly lower (P? 6. It can be concluded that broilers are effectively stunned with the head-cloaca method by using a controlled current of 70?mA or 100?mA for 1·5?s. The fillets and legs of bird stunned head-cloaca showed fewer blood splashes in the muscles compared with birds stunned in a conventional water bath.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

1. The aim of study was to investigate whether the impact of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae on the histological structure of the intestine, innervation of the small intestine wall, and basal biochemical serum parameters in Japanese quail was sex dependent.

2. One-day-old healthy male and female Japanese quail were fed either a basal diet containing no yeast (control group) or the basal diet plus 1.5% (15 g/kg of diet) of yeast (S. cerevisiae inactivated by drying). Samples from the duodenum and jejunum were taken from each bird at the age of 42 days. Blood samples were collected at this age and the concentrations of glucose, total protein, creatinine, uric acid, lipid profile (total cholesterol, low density lipoproteins (LDL), high density lipoproteins (HDL) and triacylglycerols (TG)), alanine aminotransferase (ALAT), aspartate aminotransferase (AspAT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), amylase (AMY), calcium, phosphorus and iron were determined.

3. Female quail fed diets supplemented with yeast had significantly lower total cholesterol and amylase activity than the control females. The concentration of HDL was higher in the male quail than in the females, irrespective of the treatment. An opposite effect was observed in LDL. The diet treatments influenced the activity of AspAT, which was significantly less in the male quail fed diets with 1.5% yeast.

4. Supplementation with S. cerevisiae increased the myenteron, submucosa and mucosa thickness, villus length and thickness and size of absorptive surface, while the number of villi and enterocytes were decreased in the duodenum in males. Female quail showed an increased absorptive surface in the jejunum. The Meissner (submucosal) plexuses were influenced by the feeding and sex to a greater extent than the Auerbach plexus (in the muscularis propria).

5. The results demonstrated that S. cerevisiae (1.5%) in the diet caused significant positive effects in Japanese quail, exerting an effect on the morphology of the small intestine in a sex-dependent manner.  相似文献
