1. The aim of this study was to evaluate various levels of Satureja khuzistanica essential oil (SKEO) on performance and physiological parameters of broilers fed on wheat- or maize-based diets.

2. Treatments consisted of two cereals (maize- or wheat-based diets) and three levels of SKEO)0, 250 and 500 mg/kg).

3. Feed intake (FI) and body weight gain (BWG) decreased in broilers fed on the wheat-based diets compared to the control diet. Dietary supplementation of 500 mg/kg SKEO increased FI and BWG. Dietary SKEO supplementation was effective in improving FI and BWG only in wheat-based diets and was effective in improving feed conversion ratio (FCR) in both diets.

4. Dietary supplementation of 500 mg/kg SKEO caused a significant decrease in plasma cholesterol and triglycerides. Also, plasma low-density lipoprotein concentration was decreased in broilers fed on 250 and 500 mg/kg of SKEO. Plasma cholesterol levels in birds fed on the wheat-based diets were lower than in those fed on maize-based diets.

5. Dietary supplementation of 500 mg/kg SKEO increased caecal population of Lactobacillus and reduced total bacterial and Escherichia coli count. Caecal population of Lactobacillus decreased in broilers fed on the wheat-based diets.

6. Digesta viscosity was increased in broilers fed on the wheat-based diets and decreased in broilers fed on 500 mg/kg SKEO compared to the control diet. Dietary SKEO supplementation was effective in reducing digesta viscosity values only in wheat-based diets.

7. Villus height of the duodenum and jejunum decreased in broilers fed on the wheat-based diets. Dietary supplementation of 500 mg/kg SKEO increased villus height and villus height-to-crypt depth ratios and decreased crypt depth of the duodenum compared to the control diet.

8. It can be concluded that dietary SKEO supplementation was effective in improving FI, BWG and FCR values in wheat-based diets.  相似文献

1. The effect of air filtration within a building on broiler performance and the quality of air in their environment was assessed in a single experiment.

2. Broiler growth, efficiency of food utilisation and mortality were not significantly improved as a result of air filtration.

3. Histological examinations of lung tissue indicated that the structural changes and lymphocytic reactions were less severe in broilers reared with filtered air than those observed in broilers reared with unfiltered air. However, the lung damage observed in broilers in this experiment was much less severe than that which has been observed in commercial flocks.

4. Air filtration reduced dust content in the air by up to a half, whereas the concentration of bacteria was reduced by more than 100 fold by the time the broilers were 21 days of age.  相似文献

1. The effect of various factors on the incidence of leg abnormalities, with particular reference to twisted leg, in broilers was studied.

2. The incidence of twisted legs was influenced by strain and for males was twice that for females. There was also a higher incidence in cages than on litter with the type of cage floor having an effect: broilers reared on floors of metal wire and perforated sheets had more leg problems than those reared on plastic mats and plastic‐covered wire.

3. Although vitamin and mineral supplementation had no effect on caged broilers, a restriction of metabolisable energy (ME) intake during the first 14 d after hatching halved the frequency of leg abnormalities compared with those fed ad libitum.

4. Studies of cage size and location of water suggested that a lack of exercise increases the incidence of leg abnormalities.  相似文献

1. The vertical temperature profile in a broiler house depends on several factors: ground temperature, heat production by the birds, heating of litter by resting birds, stratification and radiation, microbial heat production in the litter, moisture loss from litter and natural convection around the birds. The effect on the vertical temperature profile is calculated for each factor and the effects are finally combined to estimate vertical temperature distribution.

2. The vertical temperature profile in a commercial broiler house depends on the age of the birds. Influential factors for young broilers are ground temperature and stratification. For older broilers, influential factors are floor construction and ground‐water table, heat production of broilers and litter, the behaviour of the broilers and air circulation in the house.

3. Temperatures in the living zone can differ appreciably, by a maximum of about 4°C, from mean house temperature.

4. The velocity of air induced by the heat production of the broilers is about 5 cm/s. This provides good air mixing in the living zone.  相似文献

1. In one experiment two strains of choice‐fed broilers were given wheat, either whole or ground, and a balancer diet, either pelleted or as a mash, for 4 weeks. They were compared with broilers given a complete single feed.

2. In a second experiment, the effect of a pelleted or mash balancer, relative feeding trough space for whole wheat and balancer (1:1 or 2:1 with total feeding space constant) and group size (20, 40 or 80 broilers maintained at a constant stocking density) on the diet selection of choice‐fed broilers was examined.

3. Food form had a large effect on diet selection although there was no effect on total food intakes or weight gains. If a mash balancer was provided, the broilers selected a greater proportion of wheat when it was ground rather than whole, but if the balancer was pelleted a greater proportion of wheat tended to be selected when whole wheat was provided.

4. No significant differences in diet selection were observed as a result of differences in the strain of broiler, the relative amounts of feeder space for wheat and balancer or group size.  相似文献

1. The effect of dietary flax oil on growth rate, blood haemoglobin content, mortality and incidence of pulmonary hypertension and ascites in broilers at ambient pressure and at reduced atmospheric pressure was examined.

2. Birds were housed either in hypobaric chambers simulating 1000, 1500 or 2200 m altitude or in pens at ambient atmospheric pressure and fed on diets containing 100 g/kg added fat as either an animal/vegetable (A/V) blend or flax oil.

3. Birds raised under hypobaric conditions had a decreased growth rate and increased mortality, blood haemoglobin content, and incidence of pulmonary hypertension and ascites compared to the groups at normal atmospheric pressure.

4. Broilers fed on the diet containing flax oil snowed no difference in growth rate or blood haemoglobin content compared to birds fed on the A/V fat diet raised at the same altitude.

5. Inclusion of flax oil in the diet decreased mortality and the incidence of ascites at 2200 m and pulmonary hypertension at 1500 m.

6. Flax oil may be an effective method of reducing ascites and pulmonary hypertension in broilers without affecting performance.  相似文献

1. The possibility that infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) variants isolated from broilers with enteric and respiratory problems have a different tropism and pathological outcome from those IBV strains causing classical respiratory disease was investigated.

2. IBV variants were isolated from broiler flocks with enteric and respiratory problems in two regions of Brazil. The USP-10 isolate, of enteric origin, was inoculated via the oral oroculonasal routes into IBV-antibody-free broilers and specific pathogen-free (SPF) chickens to determine tissue tropism and pathogenicity and compared with an IBV variant (USP-50) isolated from chickens showing signs of respiratory disease only.

3. Both USP-10 and USP-50 strains caused similar pathological patterns by either route of inoculation. Both variants were detected in respiratory and non-respiratory tissues, including the kidney, intestine and testis.

4. Broilers were more susceptible to infection than SPF chickens, and seroconversion was detected in all of the chicks.  相似文献

1. Two environmentally‐controlled houses, one set at constant 21°C (low temperature, LT) and the other set at diurnally cycling 21°C to 30°C (high temperature, HT), and two dietary energy concentrations of 13 MJ ME/kg (low energy, LE) and 13.8 MJ ME/kg (high energy, HE) were used to study nitrogen and energy retention in the edible carcase of male and female broilers slaughtered at 34 and 54 days.

2. Carcase nitrogen was higher in males than in females, and in birds reared at LT than in those reared at HT.

3. Birds at LT and on HE diet, regardless of sex, retained more energy as fat in their carcases than those at HT and on LE diet respectively.

4. Maintenance energy requirement averaged 6.70, 7.67, 7.43 and 9.01 kJ per g metabolic body size (kJ/gW 0.66) for broilers at HT and LT up to 34 d and at HT and LT up to 54 d, respectively.

5. There was a similar increase with age in the energy requirement for growth but with requirements of broilers at LT consistently lower than for those at HT.  相似文献

1. The effects of including novel objects in the environment ("environmental enrichment “) on body‐weight gain, relative body‐weight gain, gain : food ratio, plasma growth hormone (GH) and prolactin concentrations in male and female broiler and layer chicks was investigated.

2. Environmental enrichment improved body‐weight gain, relative body‐weight gain and gain: food ratio but had no effect on circulating GH or prolactin concentrations.

3. Weight gain and gain : food ratio were greater in the broilers than in the layer chicks, while plasma GH and prolactin (females only) concentrations were less.

4. There were no sex differences in weight gain and relative weight gain but gain : food ratio was significantly greater in females than in males. In both strains plasma GH concentrations were higher in males than in females and prolactin concentrations were higher in male than in female broilers.  相似文献

1. The food intake, rate of food consumption (g/min) and behavioural time budgets of individually caged broiler and layer (white egg) males were compared in the early morning (1.5 to 3.5 h after onset of photoperiod) and afternoon (5.5 to 7.5 h after photostimulation) on 4 different days at 11 to 12 weeks of age. Correlations among rate of consumption, the proportions of time on different activities and previously estimated scores for fearfulness were calculated.

2. Food intake and rate of consumption were two‐fold greater in broilers than in layers. The proportion of time spent feeding in the morning was lower in layers compared with broilers and was similar in the afternoon. Rate of consumption was higher in the morning than in the afternoon in both lines.

3. Overall, a similar proportion of time was spent feeding, standing and sitting in bodi lines. The birds were more likely to be sleeping (eyes closed) in the afternoon than in the morning.

4. The proportions of time spent on preening, pecking and stereotypic pacing were greater in layers than in broiler breeders. The proportion of time spent drinking tended to be higher in broiler breeders than layers.

5. Two measures of fearfulness, aversion to a looming human and a novel rod were respectively positively and negatively correlated to time drinking and stereotypic pacing.

6. The time spent in stereotypic pacing was negatively related to rate of consumption and time spent preening.

7. The results suggest that low food intake is associated with increased arousal, fear and frequent feeding and drinking. There was no evidence that beak related activity was related to fearfulness.  相似文献

1. Cardiac troponin T is a recently developed serological marker used as a sensitive diagnostic tool for early myocardial damage in ‘at risk’ human patients.

2. Serum troponin T values were measured in young 30‐d‐old broilers with ascites and in healthy age‐matched flockmates.

3. The data showed a significant increase (P< 0.001) in troponin T values in ascitic broilers compared with control birds. A similar increase in the arterial pressure index in ascitic birds indicated a good positive correlation at this age.

4. The results suggest that this new assay cross‐reacts with chicken cardiac troponin T antigen and that it may be an important indicator of myocardial cell damage for use in future genetic selection programmes in the combat against ascites.  相似文献

1. Four trials were carried out with broilers from 5 to 9 weeks of age in order to determine the effect of reducing dietary protein concentration, with and without special supplementations of methionine and lysine, on the amount of carcass fat.

2. In all trials fat deposition increased progressively as the protein concentrations of well‐balanced standard finisher diets were lowered by replacing soybean meal with sorghum grains (milo).

3. The increased degree of fatness was the result of graded increases in food consumption, and consequent decreases in food utilisation, caused by inadequate dietary protein.

4. In three out of four trials the above negative trends could be partly or completely reversed by special supplementations with methionine and lysine in amounts to restore the dietary concentration of these first‐limiting amino acids to those of the control diets.

5. It appears that broilers overeat in a compensatory attempt to obtain the limiting amino acids required for optimal growth rate, as long as the deficiency is not severe enough to cause an amino acid imbalance.  相似文献

1. Experiments were conducted to determine whether different handling methods and crating periods differentially affect plasma corticosterone (CS) concentrations in 6 to 7‐week‐old broilers.

2. Broilers were subjected to 1 of 3 handling methods for 2 min: (i) 3 birds held in an inverted position in one hand (multiple inverted, MI), (ii) 1 bird held in an inverted position (single inverted, SI), or (iii) upright handling (U), which consisted of holding a bird gently with both hands in an upright position.

3. In experiment 1 birds were returned to their respective pens after handling and in experiment 2 they were crated for up to 4 h after the imposition of handling. In experiment 2 food deprived (FD) and fully fed (FF) uncrated birds were also sampled as controls. Blood samples were collected immediately after handling and at 1‐h intervals after handling or handling and crating.

4. In experiment 1, MI and SI birds had higher CS concentrations than U birds.

5. In experiment 2, there were no significant differences in CS concentrations of crated birds despite the different handling treatments. FD birds had higher mean CS concentrations than FF birds, although not as high as those of crated birds. CS concentrations peaked at 3 h after crating. Birds showed predominantly resting behaviour after crating.

6. These results suggest that handling stress can be reduced in broilers by the use of upright handling. However, the methods of handling is not important in influencing CS concentrations if the birds are crated after handling, either because crating is a more potent stressor than handling or due to stressor additivity.  相似文献

1. Experiments were conducted to compare the utilisation of ambadi meal with that of peanut meal in WL chicks and broilers.

2. Ambadi meal, either expeller‐processed (135.5 g and 271 g/kg) or solvent‐extracted (130.5 g and 261 g/kg), was incorporated at the expense of the peanut meal protein used in the reference diet (180 g/ kg) into diets which were fed to WL pullets (experiment 1) from 1 to 56 d of age. The weight gains and food efficiencies of the chicks fed on the ambadi meal and reference diets were similar.

3. With broilers (experiment 2) the weight gains were also similar, at all dietary concentrations of ambadi meal (89 to 356 g/kg), to those on the reference diet (235 g/kg peanut meal) from 14 to 35 d of age. However, food intake was higher on the ambadi meal diets and this resulted in significantly poorer food efficiency when compared to the reference diet.

4. High food intake and consequently low food efficiency was still evident in birds given ambadi meal diets even when ambadi meal replaced peanut meal on a digestible protein basis (experiment 4) or when ambadi meal (expeller or solvent‐extracted) was subjected to physical treatments such as soaking, autoclaving and pelleting (experiment 5).

5. The transit time of food through the gastro‐intestinal tract of broilers was faster when the diet contained ambadi meal than peanut meal. The higher food intake seen in broilers given diets containing ambadi meal could be the consequence of the fast rate of food passage.

6. Ambadi meal in diets for broilers resulted in significant increase (P<0.05) in the lengths of jejunum plus ileum and caecum. Fibre from the ambadi meal might have influenced the changes in the dimensions of gastro‐intestinal tract as well as in the transit time of food.  相似文献

A mustard seed meal free of oxazolidinethione and three rapeseed meals of low (C), medium (D) and high (E) oxazolidinethione contents were included at a rate of 12% in the diets of laying birds and of broilers. The control diets contained a similar quantity of protein as soyabean meal. In each experiment a further control group was given a suitable commercial diet.

The mustard seed meal and rapeseed meals D and E caused large and significant mortalities among laying birds. Macroscopic observations suggested that the main cause of death was probably liver haemorrhage.

Egg production, after correction for mortality, was significantly decreased by rapeseed meals D and E, and egg weight by the mustard seed meal. There were no significant treatment effects on food intake and therefore the weight of food needed for each egg produced followed fairly closely the pattern of egg production.

Overall egg production was depressed by mustard seed meal and by rapeseed meals D and E. Rapeseed meal C decreased production but not significantly.

Liver weights were not influenced by treatment, but thyroid weights of groups given rapeseed meals were significantly increased.

Broiler production was not significantly influenced either by mustard seed meal or by any of the rapeseed meals.  相似文献

1. Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of slaughter weight on the incidence and intensity of deep pectoral myopathy (DPM) of M. pectoralis minor (p. minor muscle) in commercial conditions in Turkey and to evaluate the impact of DPM on meat quality traits of pectoralis major (p. major) muscle in broilers.

2. In Experiment 1, a total of 116 250 carcasses from 59 Ross-308 broiler flocks, classified according to slaughter weight as 2.0–2.2, 2.2–2.4, 2.4–2.6 and >2.6 kg, were evaluated for occurrence of DPM. In Experiment 2, p. major samples from unaffected broilers and each DPM stage were evaluated for meat quality, oxidant and antioxidant properties, nutritional value and fatty acid profile. DPM was characterised as 1: muscles with coagulative necrosis, 2: muscles with fibrous tissue texture and pink to plumb and 3: muscles with green necrotic area.

3. The average incidence of DPM was found to be 0.73% in Experiment 1 and independent of slaughter weight.

4. In Experiment 2, p. major muscle of broilers with DPM 1 and 2 had higher pH values with higher redness and drip loss. All DPM stages resulted in an increase in lipid content and malondialdehyde activity and lowered ash content of p. major muscle compared with unaffected birds. DPM 2 increased superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities in M. p. major. The p. major of broilers with DPM had lower content of C18:2 conjugated linoleic and C20:3n-6 fatty acids than those of unaffected broilers. Lower Δ6 desaturase and thiosterase activities and 18:2n-6 to 18:3n-3 ratio were observed for all DPM stages compared to unaffected.

5. It was concluded that these changes obtained in p. major muscle of broilers with DPM might indicate biochemical characteristics of muscle degenerations.  相似文献

1. Broilers were fed on control and treated commercial diets to test the effects of fumigation with methyl bromide gas at 69% and 25% over the value recommended for the elimination of salmonellae.

2. A trained sensory panel found significant taint in roasted meat from birds fed on the fumigated food. More than half of the consumers in the home panel rated the control birds better than the birds fed on the fumigated food.

1. The effect in broilers of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) on carcase part weights and bone characteristics was investigated by studying the progeny of 10 sires and 40 dams. The correlations between TD and bone variables were also estimated.

2. The incidence of TD was 59% at 42 d of age. There were no significant differences in slaughter weight of birds with and without TD. However, in females, breast weight was heavier in affected birds. Neck plus back weight of birds with TD was significantly heavier than in birds without TD.

3. Breast blister frequency of birds was independent of the presence of TD.

4. Birds with TD had longer bones than birds without TD. However, TD had no effect on tibiotarsus weight, width, ratio of tibiotarsal to body weight and ash. A negative correlation was observed between TD score and bone ash percentage.  相似文献

1. The effect of intravenously injected zinc (Zn) on tissue Zn concentrations and pancreas metallothionein (MT) gene expression in broilers was investigated to detect differences in the tissue utilisation of Zn from different Zn sources.

2. A total of 432 male chickens were randomly allotted on d 22 post-hatch to one of nine treatments in a completely randomised design. Chickens were injected with either a 0.9% (w/v) NaCl solution (control) or a saline solution supplemented with Zn sulphate or one of three organic Zn chelates with weak (Zn-AA W), moderate (Zn-Pro M) or strong (Zn-Pro S) chelation strengths at two injected Zn dosages calculated according to two Zn absorbability levels (6 and 12%).

3. Bone and pancreas Zn concentrations, pancreas MT mRNA levels and MT concentrations increased on d 6 and 12 after Zn injections as the injected Zn dosages increased. Chickens injected with the Zn-Pro S had lower bone Zn concentration than those injected with the Zn-Pro M or Zn-AA W on d 6 after injections. However, no differences among Zn sources were observed in bone Zn concentration on d 12 after injections, pancreas Zn concentrations, pancreas MT mRNA levels and MT concentrations on both d 6 and d 12 after injections.

4. It was concluded that the injected Zn-Pro S was the least favourable for bone Zn utilisation of broilers. The pancreas Zn concentration and pancreas MT gene expressions might not be sensitive enough to detect differences in the tissue utilisation of injected Zn in broilers between organic and inorganic Zn sources or among organic Zn sources.  相似文献
