Cassava bagasse is an inexpensive and broadly available waste byproduct from cassava starch production. It contains roughly 50% cassava starch along with mostly fiber and could be a valuable feedstock for various bioproducts. Cassava bagasse and cassava starch were used in this study to make fiber-reinforced thermoplastic starch (TPSB and TPSI, respectively). In addition, blends of poly (lactic acid) and TPSI (20%) and TPSB (5, 10, 15, 20%) were prepared as a means of producing low cost composite materials with good performance. The TPS and PLA blends were prepared by extrusion and their morphological, mechanical, spectral, and thermal properties were evaluated. The results showed the feasibility of obtaining thermoplastic starches from cassava bagasse. The presence of fiber in the bagasse acted as reinforcement in the TPS matrix and increased the maximum tensile strength (0.60 MPa) and the tensile modulus (41.6 MPa) compared to cassava starch TPS (0.40 and 2.04 MPa, respectively). As expected, blending TPS with PLA reduced the tensile strength (55.4 MPa) and modulus (2.4 GPa) of neat PLA. At higher TPSB content (20%) the maximum strength (19.9 MPa) and tensile modulus (1.7 GPa) were reduced about 64% and 32%, respectively, compared to the PLA matrix. In comparison, the tensile strength (16.7) and modulus (1.2 GPa) of PLA blends made with TPSI were reduced 70% and 51% respectively. The fiber from the cassava bagasse was considered a filler since no increase in tensile strength of PLA/TPS blends was observed. The TPSI (33.1%) had higher elongation to break compared to both TPSB (4.9%) and PLA (2.6%). The elongation to break increased from 2.6% to 14.5% by blending TPSI with PLA. In contrast, elongation to break decreased slightly by blending TPSB with PLA. Thermal analysis indicated there was some low level of interaction between PLA and TPS. In PLA/TPSB blends, the TPSB increased the crystallinity of the PLA component compared to neat PLA. The fiber component of TPSB appeared to have a nucleating effect favoring PLA crystallization.  相似文献

In this work, surface acetylation of cellulose nanocrystals was performed to improve their interfacial adhesion with hydrophobic polymer matrix and to restore their thermal stability by removing the sulfate groups. The morphological, chemical, and thermal characteristics of the surface-modified cellulose nanocrystals (ACNs) were confirmed by field emission-transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, poly(butylene succinate) (PBS)/ACNs nanocomposites were also prepared via melt-mixing process, and the reinforcing effects of ACNs on the thermal, mechanical, and biodegradable properties of the nanocomposites were investigated. The Young’s modulus and tensile strength of the PBS/ACN nanocomposites increased from 115.36 and 33.67 MPa for the neat PBS to 130.55 MPa and 39.97 MPa, respectively. The thermal stability and biodegradability of the nanocomposites also increased with increasing ACN content.  相似文献

Biodegradable foams made from potato starch and natural fibres were obtained by extrusion. The effects of varying origins of these fibres on foam properties were studied, as well the relationships between their properties and the foam microstructure. The addition of fibres increased the expansion index and led to a significant reduction in water adsorption of starch foams, generally improving foam properties. The mechanical properties of the foams were affected by both relative humidity (RH) of storage and foam formulation. In general, as the RH increased, the foam strength decreased. The formulation presenting the best mechanical properties contained 10 wt% hemp fibre and had a maximal resistance of 4.14 MPa and a modulus of 228 MPa, corresponding to a more compact and dense microstructure.  相似文献

We have prepared a series of polypropylene/exfoliated graphene (PP/EG) nanocomposite films via efficient meltcompounding and compression, and investigated their morphology, structures, thermal transition behavior, thermal stability, electrical and mechanical properties as a function of EG content. For the purpose, EG, which is composed of disordered graphene platelets as reinforcing nanoscale fillers, is prepared by the oxidation/exfoliation process of natural graphite flakes. SEM images and X-ray diffraction data confirm that the graphene platelets of EG are well dispersed in PP matrix for the nanocomposites with EG contents less than 1.0 wt%. It is found that thermo-oxidative degradation of PP/EG nanocomposites is noticeably retarded with the increasing of EG content. Electrical resistivity of the nanocomposite films was dramatically changed from ∼1016 to ∼106 Ω·cm by forming electrical percolation threshold at an certain EG content between 1 and 3 wt%. Tensile drawing experiments demonstrate that yielding strength and initial modulus of PP/EG nanocomposite films are highly improved with the increment of EG content.  相似文献

In this research, reinforcing effect of hybrid filler including rice husk (RH), beech bark (BB) and nano-SiO2, in polypropylene has been investigated. In the sample preparation, four levels of filler loading were used for waste lignocellulosic materials (55-58 wt.%) and nano-SiO2 (0-4 wt.%). In order to increase the interphase adhesion, polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride was added as a coupling agent to all the composites studied. The physical properties, viz. the thickness swelling and water absorption, and mechanical properties, namely, the tensile, flexural and notched Izod impact strengths, of the composites were determined. Generally, high amount of filler content in composites can lead to the reduction of interfacial adhesion between matrix polymer and filler, and it limits their applications. The results showed that while flexural properties and elongation at break were moderately improved by the increase in the amount of filler in the matrix, tensile and Izod impact strengths decreased dramatically. However, the composites had acceptable mechanical strength levels. The mechanical properties of composites filled with RH are generally greater than BB composites. The thickness swelling and water absorption of the composites increased with the increase in the filler loading, but to a negligible extent as compared with the wood-based composites and the solid woods. Nano-SiO2 addition showed little positive effect on the mechanical properties. It can be concluded from this study that the used waste lignocellulosic materials are attractive reinforcements from the standpoint of their physico-mechanical properties.  相似文献

A series of polyurethane (PU)/monmorillonite (MMT) or nylon 66/MMT nanocomposite were prepared by melt-compounding method to take a close look at the MMT dispersion in the nanocomposite depending on the polymer matrix and the compatibilizer content. Cloisite 30B, the brand name, was selected as MMT, because surface was covered with methyl tallow bis-2-hydroxyethyl ammonium group and the reduced surface hydrophilicityity rendered MMT dispersed better in polymer matrix compared to bare MMT. MMT dispersion, due to the difference in hydrophilicity and the fondness of similar hydrophilicity, was better in nylon than PU. Maximum stress and tensile modulus could be increased by the control of MMT content for both nylon and PU, and the compatibilizer, when added at the same MMT content, also could increase the tensile properties of both nylon and PU. It was found from this investigation that the good dispersion of MMT in polymer matrix can improve the mechanical properties of nanocomposite.  相似文献

The films produced from pure starch are brittle and difficult to handle. Chemical modifications (e.g. cross-linking) and using a second biopolymer in the starch based composite have been studied as strategies to produce low water sensitive and relatively high strength starch based materials. A series of corn starch films with varying concentrations (0-20%, W/W) of citric acid (CA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were produced by casting method. The effects of CA and CMC on the water vapor permeability (WVP), moisture absorption, solubility and tensile properties were investigated. The water vapor barrier property and the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) were improved significantly (p < 0.05) as the CA percentage increased from 0 to 10% (W/W). At the level of 15% (W/W) CMC, the starch films showed the lowest WVP values (2.34 × 10−7 g Pa−1 h−1 m−1) and UTS increased from 6.57 MPa for the film without CMC to 16.11 MPa for that containing 20% CMC.  相似文献

Nanocomposite of polyurethane (PU), Nylon66 (nylon), and montmorillonite (MMT) was prepared by a twin screw extruder, and the dispersion of MMT and the mechanical properties of the nanocomposite were analyzed. Dimethyl hydrogenated tallow 2-ethylhexyl ammonium modified Cloisite 25A (C25A) and methyl tallow bis-2-hydroxyethyl ammonium modified Cloisite 30B (C30B) were used as MMT. XRD and TEM analysis indicated that the continuous melt mixing by a twin screw extruder was effective in MMT dispersion. C30B having hydroxyl group on its surface has better dispersion than C25A in the PU/nylon matrix. Maximum stress and strain at break were the maximum at 1 wt% MMT regardless of matrix composition, and decreased at higher MMT content. Best MMT dispersion was also observed at 1 wt% MMT for the entire matrix composition. Aggregation of MMT occurred at MMT content higher than 1 wt%. Nylon addition also induced the aggregation of MMT because of the high polarity of nylon surface. Dispersion of MMT was very important in improving the mechanical properties of PU/nylon nanocomposite.  相似文献

In this study, different organoclays (OMMTs) were prepared using various fatty nitrogen compounds (FNCs) and natural clay, sodium montmorillonite (MMT). The clay modification was carried out by stirring the clay particles in an aqueous solution of fatty amides (FA), fatty hydroxamic acids (FHA), and carbonyl difatty amides (CDFA). These OMMTs were then used for nanocomposites production to improve the property balance of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) by solution casting process. All sets of OMMTs and nanocomposites were characterized using various apparatuses. In the nanocomposites, where the clay surface is pretreated with FA, FHA and CDFA, the basal spacing of the clay increased to 2.94, 3.26 and 3.80 nm, respectively The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results confirmed the production of nanocomposites. PLA modified clay nanocomposites show higher thermal stability and significant improvement of mechanical properties in comparison with pure PLA.  相似文献

Biocomposites derived from polymeric resin and lignocellulosic fibers may be processed at temperatures ranging from 100 °C to 230 °C for durations of up to 30 min. These processing parameters normally lead to the degradation of the fiber's mechanical properties such as Young's modulus (E), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and percentage elongation at break (%EB). In this study, the effect of processing temperature and duration of heating on the mechanical properties of coir fibers were examined by heating the fibers in an oven at 150 °C and 200 °C for 10, 20 and 30 min to simulate processing conditions. Degradation of mechanical properties was evaluated based on the tensile properties. It was observed that the UTS and %EB of heat treated fibers decreased by 1.17-44.00% and 15.28-81.93%, respectively, compared to untreated fibers. However, the stiffness or E of the fibers increased by 6.3-25.0%. Infra red spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to elucidate further the influence of chemical, thermal and microstructural degradation on the resulting tensile properties of the fibers. The main chemical changes observed at 2922, 2851, 1733, 1651, 1460, 1421 and1370 cm−1 absorption bands were attributed to oxidation, dehydration and depolymerization as well as volatization of the fiber components. These phenomena were also attributed to in the TGA, and in addition the TGA showed increased thermal stability of the heat treated coir fibers with reference to the untreated counterparts which was most probably due to increased recrystallization and cross linking. The microstructural features including microcracks, micropores, collapsed microfibrils and sort of cooled molten liquid observed on the surface of heat treated coir fibers from the scanning electron microscope (SEM) could not directly be linked to the effect of temperature and durations of heating although such features may have largely account for the lower tensile properties of heat treated coir fibers with reference to untreated ones.  相似文献

The effects of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) hybrid nanofillers on the mechanical and thermal properties of reinforced polyethylene terephthalate (PET) have been investigated. The nanocomposites were melt blended using the counter rotating twin screw extruder followed by injection molding. Their morphology, mechanical and thermal properties were characterized. Combination of the two nanofillers in composites formulation supplemented each other which resulted in the overall improvement in adhesion between fillers and matrix. The mechanical properties and thermal stability of the hybrid nanocomposites (PET/GNP1.5/MWCNT1.5) were significantly improved compared to PET/GNP3 and PET/MWCNT3 single filer nanocomposites. However, it was observed that GNP was better in improving the mechanical properties but MWCNT resulted in higher thermal stability of Nanocomposite. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) revealed uniform dispersion of the hybrid fillers in PET/GNP1.5/MWCNT1.5 nanocomposites while agglomeration was observed at higher filler content. The MWCNT prevented the phenomenal stacking of the GNPs by forming a bridge between adjacent GNP planes resulting in higher dispersion of fillers. This complimentary geometrical structure is responsible for the significant improvement in the thermal stability and mechanical properties of the hybrid nanocomposites.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)/CaCO3 and PET/modified-CaCO3 (m-CaCO3) nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending. The morphology indicated that m-CaCO3 produced by reacting sodium oxalate and calcium chloride, was well dispersed in PET matrix and showed good interfacial interaction with PET compared to CaCO3. No significant differences in the thermal properties such as, glass transition, melting and degradation temperatures, of the nanocomposites were observed. The thermal shrinkage of PET at 120 °C was 10.8 %, while those of PET/CaCO3 and PET/m-CaCO3 nanocomposites were 2.9–5.2 % and 1.2–2.8 %, respectively depending on filler content. The tensile strength of PET/CaCO3 nanocomposite decreased with CaCO3 loading, whereas that of PET/m-CaCO3 nanocomposites at 0.5 wt% loading showed a 17 % improvement as compared to neat PET. The storage modulus at 120 °C increased from 1660 MPa for PET to 2350 MPa for PET/CaCO3 nanocomposite at 3 wt% loading, and 3230 MPa for PET/m-CaCO3 nanocomposite at 1 wt% loading.  相似文献

Essential oils are important in the flavour and cosmetic industries. Recently, microwave energy has been applied in different extraction processes to obtain essential oils with quality and yield similar to those obtained using steam distillation, but using less energy and time. The dielectric properties of any given material are of critical importance when seeking to understand its response to applied electromagnetic waves. Nevertheless, data related to aromatic plants are scarce. This paper addresses the measurement and estimation of dielectric properties of herbal matrices as a part of the study of the fundamental phenomenology behind the extraction of essential oils with microwaves. A cavity perturbation system was used to measure the properties of the plant matrix, and dielectric mixture equations were used later to try to reproduce the results obtained. The dielectric properties of partly dried rosemary, rosemary's essential oil and oven-dry plant material were measured at temperatures between 20 °C and 160 °C, and atmospheric pressure, at frequencies of 2450 MHz and 910 MHz. The results show a strong influence of water content on the dielectric properties. A new predictive approach that uses the results from measurements of dielectric properties from the different constituents to obtain effective mixture dielectric properties is proposed. The predicted values of the dielectric constants were better than those of the loss factors.  相似文献

Rice starch suspensions of 10% dry matter (DM) were treated by heat (0.1 MPa at 20–85 °C) or pressure/heat combinations (100–600 MPa at 20, 40 and 50 °C) for 15 min to investigate their gelatinization and rheological characteristics. The maximum swelling index of about 12 g water per gram of DM was obtained by thermal treatment at 85 °C, meanwhile, that of 7.0 g was observed by 600-MPa pressurization at 50 °C. The higher temperatures or pressures resulted in the higher degrees of gelatinization. Furthermore, treatments of 0.1 MPa at 85 °C, 500 MPa at 50 °C and 600 MPa at various temperatures caused complete gelatinization of rice starch. The consistency index (K) and storage modulus (G′) dramatically increased from 70 °C or 400 MPa. The G′ values were higher in pressure-treated samples than those in thermal-treated samples. Therefore, an application of pressure/heat combinations as a processing method to improve the quality of rice starch products would be possible.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of the fibrous material obtained from ethanol-water fractionation of bagasse as reinforcement of thermoplastic starches in order to improve their mechanical properties. The composites were elaborated using matrices of corn and cassava starches plasticized with 30 wt% glycerin. The mixtures (0, 5, 10 and 15 wt% bagasse fiber) were elaborated in a rheometer at 150 °C. The mixtures obtained were pressed on a hot plate press at 155 °C. The test specimens were obtained according to ASTM D638. Tensile tests, moisture absorption tests for 24 days (20-23 °C and 53% RH, ASTM E104), and dynamic-mechanical analyses (DMA) in tensile mode were carried out. Images by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction were obtained. Fibers (10 wt% bagasse fiber) increased tensile strength by 44% and 47% compared to corn and cassava starches, respectively. The reinforcement (15 wt% bagasse fiber) increased more than fourfold the elastic modulus on starch matrices. The storage modulus at 30 °C (E30 °C′) increased as the bagasse fiber content increased, following the trend of tensile elastic modulus. The results indicate that these fibers have potential applications in the development of biodegradable composite materials.  相似文献

Thermoplastic starch (TPS) was modified with ascorbic acid and citric acid by melt processing of native starch with glycerol as plasticizer in an intensive batch mixer at 160 °C. It was found that the molar mass decreases with acid content and processing time causing the reduction in melting temperature (Tm). As observed by the results of X-ray diffraction and DSC measurements, crystallinity was not changed by the reaction with organic acids. Tm depression with falling molar mass was interpreted on the basis of the effect of concentration of end-chain units, which act as diluents. FTIR did not show any appreciable change in starch chemical compositions, leading to the conclusion that the main changes observed were produced by the variation in molar mass of the material. We demonstrated that it is possible to decrease melt viscosity without the need for more plasticizer thus avoiding side-effects such as an increase in water affinity or relevant changes in the dynamic mechanical properties.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (PEN/MWNT) nanocomposites are prepared by in situ condensation polymerization in the presence of various acid-treated MWNT (a-MWNT) contents and their morphology, rheological and mechanical properties are investigated as a function of the a-MWNT content. SEM image of a plasma-etched nanocomposite exhibits that a-MWNTs are dispersed well in the PEN matrix by forming an interconnected network structure. Accordingly, rheological properties such as complex viscosities and shear moduli of PEN/a-MWNT nanocomposites at the terminal region of low frequency are much higher than those of pure PEN. Glass transition temperatures of nanocomposites also increase with the increment of the a-MWNT content, which stems from the reduced chain mobility due to the specific interaction between a-MWNTs and PEN matrix. Dynamic and tensile mechanical properties of nanocomposites are also higher than those of pure PEN and they increase with the increment of the a-MWNT content. The highly improved mechanical properties of PEN/a-MWNT nanocomposites are explained to originate from the interconnected network structure of a-MWNTs in PEN matrix as well as the strong interfacial adhesion between a-MWNTs and PEN matrix.  相似文献

Biodegradable polymers, such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA) have attracted a lot of attention in the scientific community recently due to a rapid growth of intensive interest in the global environment for alternatives to petroleum-based polymeric materials. Fatty nitrogen compounds (FNCs), fatty amides (FA), fatty hydroxamic acids (FHA), and carbonyl difatty amides (CDFA), which were synthesized from vegetable oils, were used as one of organic compounds to modify natural clay (sodium montmorillonite). The clay modification was carried out by stirring the clay particles in an aqueous solution of FA, FHA, and CDFA, by which the clay layer thickness increased from 1.23 to 2.61, 2.84 and 3.19 nm, respectively. The modified clay was then used in the preparation of the PLA/epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) blend nanocomposites. They were prepared by incorporating 2% of CDFA-MMT and 3% of both FA-MMT and FHA-MMT. The interaction of the modifier in the clay layer was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Elemental analysis was used to estimate the presence of FNCs in the clay. The nanocomposites were synthesized by solution casting of the modified clay and a PLA/ESO blend at the weight ratio of 80/20, which has the highest elongation at break. The XRD and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results confirmed the production of nanocomposites. PLA/ESO modified clay nanocomposites show higher thermal stability and significant improvement of mechanical properties in comparison with those of the PLA/ESO blend. The novelty of this study is use of FNCs which reduces the dependence on petroleum-based surfactants.  相似文献

Numerous efforts to prepare useful graphene-based nanocomposites have been made and important improvements achieved. In our studies, novel structured polyolefin-based thermoplastic elastomer, poly(ethylene-ter-1-hexene-ter-divinylbenzene) (PEHV) was designed and synthesized. And high quality graphene was manufactured via the exfoliation of graphite. PEHV/graphene nanocomposites were fabricated using solution casting method as the amount of graphene added. The morphologies of nanocomposites were observed using scanning electron microscopy. And density, mechanical properties and electrical properties were also measured. Electrical properties and mechanical properties were improved with the increase of graphene added in nanocomposites. It is expected that PEHV/graphene nanocomposites could be applied to lightweight EMI shielding materials.  相似文献

Octamethyl-POSS and Octaphenyl-POSS reinforced polypropylene nanocomposite monofilaments were prepared by melt blending route. It was observed that incorporation of Octamethyl-POSS and Octaphenyl-POSS in polypropylene show improvement in mechanical as well as thermal properties. Octaphenyl POSS/PP nanocomposites show significant increase in thermal stability even at very low concentration as compared to neat polymer matrix. An increase of 100 and 140 °C was observed in thermal degradation temperature at 5 wt% loss and maximum degradation over neat PP filaments respectively at low OP-POSS loadings (<5 wt%). Both Octamethyl-POSS and Octaphenyl-POSS act as lubricating agents facilitating drawing which results in improvement in orientation as well as mechanical properties.  相似文献
