The dominant mineral in the clay fractions from the basal horizons of a podzol developed on till derived mainly from chlorite-schists in Argyllshire is oxidized, iron-rich chlorite. Towards the profile surface, the chlorite decreases in amount, becoming absent in the A2 horizon in which the dominant mineral is a complex dioctahedral interstratified phase formed from dioctahedral mica and composed of mica and vermiculite. The absence of any trioctahedral mineral in the A2 horizon together with the marked loss of iron and magnesium from the clay fraction from this horizon indicates that the chlorite, a thuringite, has been destroyed, the only detectable product being goethite. In other apparently similar soils chlorite persists throughout the profiles. As the Eredine podzol contains translocated humus in the B2 horizon, it is suggested that during podzolization, organic solutions percolated downwards from the surface, formed complexes with iron and aluminium from the chlorite structure, removing them to the B2 horizon, and thus eventually dissolved out the chlorite from the A2 horizon.  相似文献

Clay movement and its effect on the differences in texture between the A and B horizons are expressed by mathematical equations. The factors which are considered are the actual amount of clay which has moved (l), the ratio of the thick nesses of the horizons (N), and the original clay content (C). Parent materials are assumed to be homogeneous. Knowing the clay contents of the A and B horizons, it is possible to calculate for given N ratios the theoretical amount of clay which has moved in order to achieve the observed textural difference. The theoretical clay content C'of the parent material can also be computed. All computations assume homogeneous parent materials and closed profiles, i.e. materials that do not collapse, shrink, or swell, and consider all other clay transformations non-operative. An eluviations index k, which indicates the proportion of the original clay that has been translocated, is proposed for evaluating the intensity of clay migration. Examples of practical applications are given: i.e. the required difference in clay content between A and B in the definition of the argillic horizon should not be kept constant in soils which have variable initial clay contents; graphs illustrate the effects of clay migration for constant C and k values (isoparentic and isoluvic lines). All computations can be made by desk calculators provided with an extended memory for storage of data and programmes.  相似文献

Well‐developed placic horizons have been found in subalpine forest soils with large clay contents in Taiwan. We investigated their formation processes in five profiles in a subalpine ecosystem of northeastern Taiwan, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy‐dispersive spectrometry (EDS), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), differential X‐ray diffraction (DXRD) and chemical extractions. The placic horizons, ranging from 3‐ to 17‐mm thick, always occurred above argillic horizons with abrupt changes in pH and texture between the two horizons. When fully developed, the placic horizons were clearly differentiated between upper and lower sub‐horizons. EDS and chemical extractions revealed that the cementing materials in both were predominantly inorganic Fe oxides. However, contents of aluminosilicates and organically complexed Fe and Al were greater in the lower than in the upper placic sub‐horizon. Results of EPMA indicated that interstitial fine materials in the upper placic sub‐horizon were composed mainly of Fe oxides, whereas Fe oxides were codominant with illuvial clay in the lower sub‐horizon. These analyses identified the migration of Fe and clay as major formation processes in both sub‐horizons. We hypothesize that there is a pedogenic sequence that starts with clay illuviation, followed by podzolization. The resultant textural and permeability differentiation reinforces the tendency to profile episaturation that is already inherent from the heavy rainfall and clayey surface soils. Topsoil Fe is therefore reduced and mobilized, and then illuviated with clay and organically complexed Fe/Al to initiate the lower placic sub‐horizon. The poor permeability of this layer reinforces the moisture conditions in the surface soils, and the further reduction, illuviation and deposition of inorganic Fe to form the upper placic sub‐horizon.  相似文献

Fragipan is a widely distributed subsoil horizon that induces severe limitations to plant growth and land use, mainly because of its high bulk density. In this work, we evaluated the pore‐size distribution through the analysis of the cumulative curve of intruded mercury volume in some soils with fragipan horizons. This approach provides information also about the arrangement of particles, thus we compared the results obtained for fragipan and nonfragipan horizons to relate porosity and particle arrangement with the specific physical properties of fragipans. The total volume of intruded mercury did not allow to discriminate between fragipan and nonfragipan horizons. However, from the variation of the pore volume as a function of the radius, two modal classes of pores were found, coarse and fine, respectively. The fine‐pore class arose from the arrangement of clay particles, and its volume was correlated to clay contents (r = 0.787) and to clay packing density (r = –0.621). The clay fractions in fragipans were less densely packed than in the other B horizons, even if they had similar clay contents. The coarser‐pore modal class is known to arise from the interactions between clay, silt, and sand particles, and its volume was different among horizons. Fragipan had a low volume of this modal pore class. In addition, a packing density for the coarser phase of 0.74, corresponding to a rhombohedral packing, was found only in fragipans. Thus, the low permeability and high bulk density of fragipans are linked to specific arrangements of the particles: an open packing of the clay phase is associated to an extremely dense packing of silt and sand. Some aspects of the genesis of terrae rossae are still subject to controversy while others related to the genesis of the mineral fraction have been studied very little. We have studied four terrae rossae over limestone (two Chromic‐Leptic Luvisols, a Rhodi‐Leptic Luvisol and a Chromi‐Leptic Cambisol) in Sierra Gádor (Almería, southern Spain), in particular the various formation processes by (i) examination of their morphological, analytical and mineralogical characteristics (including crystallochemical parameters of the mica), (ii) examination of the insoluble residue of the gravel and rock, (iii) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of sand and silt grains, and (iv) examination of the geochemistry of the soil solution. We have investigated the autochthonous or allochthonous nature of the soil material (fine earth and gravel) in relation to the rocky substrate, concluding that both origins are possible. Our SEM study of the morphology of the quartz grains shows that some are insoluble residue and some are probably wind blown from desert and coastal sources. The micas in the fine earth fractions are inherited from the insoluble residue. Comparison of the crystallochemical parameters of micas in the insoluble residue and the soil clay shows that the clay has more SiIV and (Fe, Mg)VI, and less AlIV, AlVI and x (layer charge) than the insoluble residue. It also has fewer polytypes 2M1 and more 1M and has a smaller crystal size, especially in B horizons. The kaolinite is of varied origins including neoformation and inheritance from underlying rock. Some of the kaolinite and some mica has been blown in from elsewhere, probably from desert and coastal sources. The soils have undergone other typical processes of terrae rossae including dissolution of carbonate, illuviation of clay and iron oxides, and rubifaction.  相似文献

本文对北亚热带地区七个白浆化土壤的原生矿物和次生矿物的特性进行了研究。重,轻矿物含量表明土壤继承了母质的特性,粘淀层与漂白层的母质沉积是间断的,前者风化强度大于后者。石英颗粒表现特征显示漂白层物来来源于黄土物质再堆积,粘土矿物以水云母为主,其结晶度较差,氧化铁类型以针铁矿和赤铁矿为主,也有非晶质氧化铁和硅酸盐中的Fe^2+,其形成条件与现代化成土条件一致。  相似文献

Pedostratigraphic levels (PLs) are typical assemblages of soil‐genetic horizons, formed by materials having the same degree of weathering. The pedostratigraphic approach can be very useful to comprehend the formation of the Quaternary soil cover, the environmental evolution of a territory, and to estimate the age of paleosols. A pedostratigraphic study of a Terra Rossa was carried out to understand the soil–parent material origin and to estimate the time of the beginning of pedogenesis. Besides soil and geomorphological survey, the Terra Rossa was analyzed for Fe forms, geochemistry, clay mineralogy, micromorphology, and with scanning electron microscope. Optical dating was applied to obtain age estimates for the deposition of the parent material of soil formation. The insoluble residue of limestone was obtained and analyzed for geochemistry and clay mineralogy. The bedrock is constituted by Quaternary lacustrine limestone, showing pronounced karst landforms. The soil profile is situated in a little dissolution doline and was divided into three PLs: PL1 (0–110 cm) is constituted by cambic and ochric horizons, formed during Holocene in a mixture of colluvial soil sediments and fresh limestone, with aeolian components; PL2 (110–290 cm) includes two argic horizons, which began to form during Late‐Middle Pleistocene in colluvial soil sediments, with few aeolian additions; PL3 (290–330 cm) is constituted by a red argic horizon, with nitic properties, which developed from the insoluble residue of the limestone. The age of PL3 was calculated through a mass balance and an estimation of the limestone‐dissolution rate during the Quaternary, which led to an approximate age of Middle Pleistocene, between 250 and 500 ky BP. The time of the beginning of pedogenesis on limestone can be used as a reference for the tectonic uplifting of the area and emersion of the plateau.  相似文献

Exchangeable Mg appears to have no specific effect on soil hydraulic conductivity of A and C horizons of a sodic sandy loam soil (montmorillonite and kaolinite clay minerals) leached with solutions which cause clay swelling to be the dominant mechanism reducing conductivity (SAR < 20, electrolyte concentration 10 meq per litre). There is some evidence of a specific effect when these soils are subsequently leached with water which causes clay dispersion to become important. Fresh loess in the A horizon dissolves in percolating rainwater, causing difficulties in the replication of experiments. It seems to give a small degree of ‘self protection’ to soil structure, a property likely to be operating in other soils affected by recent loess deposits.  相似文献

A study was made of the qualitative and quantitative distribution of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria in the two mineral horizons of a developing podsol soil under Pinus. There was no significant difference in the total numbers or in the kinds of bacteria between the two horizons. In the acidic A1 horizon (pH, 3.6) Bacillus spp. comprised 58 per cent of the population, the remainder being composed of Gram-negative rods (15 per cent), pleomorphic rods (14 per cent), Gram-positive cocci (10 per cent) and streptomycetes (3 per cent). The corresponding figures for the C horizon (pH, 8.6) were Bacillus (23 per cent), Gram-negative rods (37 per cent), pleomorphic rods (10 per cent), Gram-positive cocci (17 per cent) and streptomycetes (13 per cent). These differences in distribution could not be related to any one environmental factor. The data from this investigation lend support to the view that different soil types can be distinguished by their bacterial floras. Bacillus subtilis, B. cereus and the Gram-positive cocci were biochemically and fermentatively active and many of the streptomycetes were able to degrade complex organic molecules. The Gram-negative and pleomorphic forms were apparently metabolically inactive.  相似文献

A Xeralf on feldspathic sandstone was sampled from a hillslope in the Mount Lofty Ranges in order to study its genesis and, in particular, the origin of the strong texture contrast. Micromorphological study demonstrated that the clay present in void argillans and papules in the B2 horizon accounted for only a small amount of the clay present. Elemental analysis of the whole soil (< 2 mm) and sand, silt and clay fractions showed that there had been considerable weathering of both quartz and microcline, which were the dominant minerals present. Kaolinite is the dominant clay mineral weathering product. Illite appears to be forming from vermiculite in the A horizon. Using zircon as an internal standard, it was shown that elemental losses of SiO2 and reductions in weight and volume were similar in A and B horizons. Losses of aluminium and potassium were greatest in the A horizon, least in the B3. There has been an absolute increase in the amount of iron. A possible source is iron from heavy mineral bands upslope. It was concluded from the similarity of the quartz particle-size distributions of the A2, B2 and B3 horizons that the intensity of weathering of quartz was the same in A and B horizons. In the case of feldspar (mostly microcline), there is a greater proportion of feldspar in the fine sand and silt fractions of the A2 horizon than in the B horizon. Weathering of feldspar is greatest in the A horizon. The texture profile is principally a function of greater lateral loss of clay from the A horizons compared to the B horizons.  相似文献

The iodine content in successive 10 cm horizons of eighteen soil profiles from England and Wales was determined and correlated with contents of‘free’ aluminium and iron oxides (oxalate-soluble) and organic matter. The pattern of change in iodine content with depth varied considerably with soil type. In the rendzina soils, the content was relatively high in the surface 10 cm but declined markedly with depth. In the podsols, iodine was low at the surface but increased in the B horizon: in one of these soils an iron pan of about 1 cm thickness had an iodine content as high as 37.6 mg/kg. In two soils derived from Ordovician, and one from igneous, rock material, the iodine content was relatively high (up to 25 mg/kg) with maximum values at intermediate depths. In contrast, soils derived from river alluvium and from lowland clays generally had low iodine contents (< 6 mg/kg) which showed little variation with depth in the profile. In a peat soil the iodine content was relatively high in the horizons above 60 cm but was low (1. 3 mg/kg) in the underlying clay. In all 154 samples from the eighteen sites, iodine content was closely correlated with oxalate-soluble aluminium (r= 0.834***) but not with oxalate-soluble iron (r= 0. 35) or organic matter (r= 0.37). However, in the five most acidic soils, with pH below 4. 8, the iodine content was more closely correlated with iron than with aluminium.  相似文献

Flocculation tests and permeability measurements were carried out for silt and clay fractions separated from surface and subsurface horizons of four paddy soils. There was not much difference in the flocculating power between A1(OH)2.2C10.8 and CaSO4. Their flocculation value, 0.3 to 3 mM, was attained by adding the reagents at the rate of 0.24 to 2.4 mmol/100 g of the silt and clay. The flocculation with A1(OH)2.2C10.8 or CaSO4 did not affect the sediment volume of the silt and clay. This sediment volume was smaller for the surface than for the subsurface horizons of each soil, suggesting that soil organic matter and repetition of wetting and drying contribute to the stable aggregation of the silt and clay in the surface horizon. The permeability was higher for the silt and clay fractions separated from the surface horizon than that from the subsurface horizon, and the addition of 2.5 to 4.2 mmol of A1(OH)2.2C10.8 or CaSO4/100g of the silt and clay increased its permeability by 1.5 to 4 times. The effect of A1(OH)2.2C10.8 was more lasting than that of CaSO4 and was recognized even after 200 ml of water passed through 1 g of the silt and clay. The effect of the flocculating reagent on the permeability was more or less enhanced by air-drying the treated silt and clay.  相似文献

本文研究了中南地区不同纬度带花岗岩母质发育的黄棕壤、红壤、砖红壤的胶体表面性质与粘土矿物组合、14×10-10m矿物、氧化物的关系。结果表明:(1)黄棕壤、红壤、砖红壤粘粒的阳离子交换量、比表面和内表面占总表面的比例依次减小,这与其高岭石、粘粒氧化物含量依次增加,14×10-10m矿物含量依次减少有关,且也与14×10-10m矿物在黄棕壤中主要是蛭石,在红壤中主要是14×10-10m过渡矿物,砖红壤不含14×10-10m矿物的结论相符合。(2)在其他矿物类型和含量相近下,14×l0-10m矿物是蛭石的土壤与14×10-10m矿物是14×10-10m过渡矿物的土壤相比,前者的阳离子交换量、比表面、内表面占总表面的比例比后者高些,但土壤的活性酸度弱些,交换性铝含量比后者低些。  相似文献

Abstract. Cashew soils of South Eastern Tanzania become acidified due to sulphur used for controlling powdery mildew disease ( Oidium anacardii Noack). The buffering capacity of surface and subsurface horizons of 35 soil profiles of major cashew growing areas –- the Makonde plateau, its piedmont and inland plains –- was studied. The buffering capacity of surface and subsurface horizons was strongly correlated with clay content and weakly with organic carbon content. In addition, it was only weakly correlated with total exchangeable bases and available P of the surface horizon, but strongly with soil pH, base saturation and cation exchange capacity of the clay fraction of the subsurface horizon. Highly weathered sandy soils, dominant on the Makonde plateau and common on the Piedmont, had the lowest buffering capacity. Soils from the inland plains had better buffering capacities as they are generally more clayey or are less weathered. The risk of severe acidification and of a decline in productivity of cashew and of food crops is highest on the Makonde plateau. Further development and dissemination of methods which can reduce the use of sulphur are required.  相似文献

Soil is a limited natural resource that needs to be efficiently salvaged during landscape construction operations for its further use as topsoil. To avoid inclusion of undesirable subsoil material (e.g. excess clay from Bt horizon), the majority of current guidelines define borrowed topsoil material as the surface layer of native soil, or the soil A horizon. Using information from over 7000 soil pedons from the 48 contiguous United States, we characterized selected topsoil properties and simulated the mixing of A and E horizons. The selected soil properties were compared among four different operationally defined topsoils: A surface layer, ASL; AP surface layer, APL; A horizon, A; and a mix of A and E horizons, AE. Average topsoil depth decreases in the order: AE > A > APL > ASL; sand content decreases in the order: ASL > AE > A > APL; clay decreases in the order: APL > A > ASL > AE; and organic carbon decreases in the order: ASL > A > APL > AE. On average, mixing of A and E horizons increases excavation depth by over 2.5 fold while having minor effects on soil texture; with AE/A ratio of 1.03, 1.00 and 1.07 for sand, silt and clay content, respectively. Yet, average soil organic matter content decreases by 38% upon mixing A and E horizons. Given the marked increase in soil volume and minor effect on soil texture, it is our suggestion that, for landscaping purposes, protocols for salvaging excavated soil material, for reuse as topsoil material include the E horizon (where it exists). Supplementing the recovered soil material with organic matter, such as compost, to overcome its dilution due to the incorporation of E horizon is recommended.  相似文献

Field estimates of silt and clay contents were compared statistically with the silt (2-60 μm) and clay (<2 μm) contents determined by the pipette method of 184 soil horizons from a large range of west Midland soils (clay contents 1–81 per cent and silt contents 3–71 per cent). Regression equations were calculated (a) for each of four surveyors using combined topsoil and subsoil data and (b) for surface and subsoils separately using combined data for the four surveyors. There is slight evidence of ‘operator bias’ and a tendency for all four surveyors to underestimate clay in surface horizons though these conclusions have limited significance because of the small number and the distribution of some of the sample populations. Single equations for the combined data from all operators and all horizons explained 75.5 per cent of the variation in field estimates of silt content and 85.4 per cent of the variation of clay estimates. For silt, the regression line almost passes through the origin with a slope not significantly different from unity, whilst for clay, the line intercepts the y-axis close to zero and has a slope of 0.904. The results show that, with experience and adequate reference samples, surveyors can confidently estimate the particle-size distribution of a wide range of soils. These studies were done during soil mapping in Staffordshire, Hereford and Worcester, and Salop using the newly introduced soil classification (Avery, 1973) and revised Handbook (Hodgson, 1974) of the Soil Survey of England and Wales.  相似文献

Oxisols cover ≈ 23% of the land surface in the tropics and are utilized extensively for agricultural purposes in the tropical countries. Under the variable input types of agricultural systems practiced locally, some of these soils still appear to have problems in terms of proper soil classification and subsequently hinder attempts to implement sustainable agro‐management protocols. The definition for Oxisols in Soil Survey Staff (1999) indicates that additional input is still required to refine the definition in order to resolve some of the outstanding classification problems. Therefore, the objective of this study is to examine the properties of some Oxisols and closely related soils in order to evaluate the classification of these soils. Soils from Brazil, several countries in Africa, and Malaysia were used in this study. Field observations provided the first indication that some of the presently classified kandi‐Alfisols and kandi‐Ultisols were closer to Oxisols in terms of their properties. Water‐retention differences and apparent CEC of the subsurface horizons also supported this idea. The types of extractable Fe oxides and external specific surface areas of the clay fractions showed that many kandic horizons have surface properties that are similar to the oxic horizons. Micromorphology indicated that the genetic transition from the argillic to the oxic involves a diminishing expression of the argillic. Properties, such as CEC, become dominant. The kandic horizon is therefore inferred as a transition to the oxic horizon. It is proposed that the Oxisols be keyed out based only on the presence of an oxic horizon and an iso–soil temperature regime. The presence of a kandic horizon will be reflected at lower levels in Oxisols. The Oxisols will now be exclusive to the intertropical belt with an iso–soil temperature regime. The geographic extend of the Oxisols would increase and that of kandi‐Alfisols and Ultisols would decrease. A few kandi‐Alfisols and Ultisols in the intertropical area will have low CEC which would fail the weatherable mineral contents. The kandic subgroups of some Alfisols and Ultisols will be transitional between the low (< 16 cmolc [kg clay]–1)‐ and high (> 24 cmolc [kg clay]–1)‐activity clay soils. The proposed changes to classification will contribute to a better differentiation of the landscape units in the field. Testing of the proposed classification on some Malaysian soils showed that the new definition for Oxisols provides a better basis for the classification of the local soils and the development of meaningful soil‐management groups for plantations.  相似文献
