The effectiveness of the pour-on formulation of flumethrin was tested on grazing cattle. Flumethrin was applied once a month from April to October from 1990 to 1995 to cattle grazing in the Aso area of Kumamoto Prefecture in Japan. Both the number of ticks in the field and the number of ticks feeding on cattle decreased remarkably in relation to the number of years flumethrin was applied. Ticks in the field were not detected in 1994 and 1995, and ticks feeding on cattle decreased to 4% in 1995. Mortality due to Theileria sergenti infection also decreased significantly after more than 3 years of flumethrin pour-on application, although overall mortality did not change. At the end of the trial the incidence of T. sergenti had decreased to one-fifth of the pretrial value, although total incidence of disease had not changed. These results indicated that multiple-year seasonal application of flumethrin pour-on to grazing cattle effectively decreased the number of ticks and decreased both mortality and incidence of T. sergenti.  相似文献

Efficacy trials with flumethrin 1% pour-on were conducted in 9 different areas in 3 southern and central African countries against Amblyomma hebraeum and A. variegatum on cattle. A dose volume of 10 ml/100 kg body mass applied at bi-weekly intervals provided excellent control of both tick species on their predilection sites, irrespective of locally and seasonally high tick pressure. The trial results demonstrate clearly that this new concept of tick control can be effectively applied in commercial and traditional cattle husbandry situations.  相似文献

Eight cattle immunized with cattle-derived Theileria parva Boleni stabilate together with six susceptible controls were released in Dombawera Game Park on the Highveld of Zimbabwe. This coincided with Rhipicephalus appendiculatus nymphal activity. The cattle grazed together with African buffaloes (Syncerus caffer) and were not treated against tick infestation. The nymphal tick infestation was high, and seven of the eight immunized cattle and three of the controls had severe and fatal reactions. Subsequently, two stocks of Theileria parva to be tested for their immunizing abilities were prepared-one from adult ticks which were fed as nymphs on one of the sick control animals (Dom 268) and the other from adult ticks collected from pastures grazed by buffaloes (Bv-1). Two groups of cattle were immunized with either the Dom 268-derived strain (eight animals) or the Bv-1-derived strain (four animals). These together with three non-immunized controls, were released in Bally Vaughaun Game Park in the Highveld, where buffaloes are present, during the season of nymphal tick activity. A third group of five cattle, immunized with stabilate Bv-1, and three non-immunized controls were released at the same site during the season of adult tick activity. The nymphal and adult tick infestations of the cattle were large and more than 2000 nymphs and 1000 adult ticks were counted per animal. Cattle were treated with a pyrethroid pour-on preparation to control the tick infestation and screw-worm strike. The immunized cattle in the three groups survived the theileriosis challenge for a period of 18 months, but the non-immunized control cattle suffered a severe and fatal theileriosis 19-23 days after being placed on the pasture.  相似文献

Relative resistance levels of cattle against tick infestations in the communal grazing area of Botshabelo in the south-eastern Free State were determined. The objective was to establish whether differences in resistance can be exploited to contribute to tick control methods used by small-scale farmers in resource-poor environments. Ten cows (Bos taurus crosses) between the ages of 18 months and four years were used and tick counts were conducted once a month over a period of 12 months to compare their total tick burdens. Tick burdens of the various animals were compared mutually as well as with the mean tick burden of the group as a whole. Tick numbers varied throughout the year on all individuals but some animals consistently tended to have either higher or lower numbers than the mean of the group. Tick burdens on cattle classified as having a relatively low resistance to tick infestations increased eleven-fold from January to June 1996 compared to a six-fold increase on cattle categorized as belonging to the high resistance group. Twenty-eight percent of the cattle in the total study group carried 50% of the ticks collected (60,079). It is recommended that farmers in the region visually assess B. decoloratus burdens, the most abundant tick species, and sell or cull the most susceptible animals first in their normal program of utilization of the animals. This should eventually result in the direct improvement of the overall tick resistance of their cattle herds.  相似文献

Objective To assess the control of the cattle tick (Boophilus microplus) and the performance of commercial cattle treated with the macrocylic lactone endectocide, moxidectin, formulated either as an injection or as a pour-on. Design Groups of 10–12 tick infested cattle were treated with moxidectin injection, moxidectin pour-on or remained untreated (28-day trials) or were treated with deltamethrinethion as a dip (140-day trials). The cattle were exposed to natural tick challenge under field conditions. Procedure Tick numbers on trial cattle were recorded in each trial before the initial treatment and in the 28-day trials at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days or in the 140-day trials, at 28-day intervals before each of the treatments and at the final inspection. Body weights of the cattle were also recorded prior to the initial treatment and at the termination of each trial. Cattle were observed on the day of each treatment and at each inspection for evidence of any reactions to treatment. Results 28-day trials: Significant reductions in tick counts were recorded in both treatment groups when compared with cattle in the untreated group. Weight advantage was recorded in the moxidectin treated groups. 140-day trials: All three treatments resulted in zero or low tick counts at each inspection with the exception of the pour-on treatment at week 8 in one trial and week 9 in the other trial. Additional weight gain was recorded for both the moxidectin treated groups, relative to the deltamethrin-ethion dip groups, but was significant only for the pour-on groups. There was no evidence of any local or systemic adverse reaction in any treated cattle in any trial. Conclusion Good to excellent control of the cattle tick (Boophilus microplus) was demonstrated with the moxidectin formulations in all trials, the injection being particularly effective. An improved performance was recorded in all trials in cattle treated with both moxidectin formulations when compared with the untreated cattle and with cattle treated with the deltamethrin-ethion dip. There was no evidence of any local or systemic adverse reaction to treatment with either moxidectin formulation.  相似文献

The efficacy of an amitraz/cypermethrin pour-on preparation (1% w/v each) was tested against natural tick infestations of buffaloes, eland and blesbok in three separate trials. The eland were also treated with a 0.02% abamectin (w/v) acaricidal pour-on preparation. The amitraz/cypermethrin pour-on was effective against Amblyomma hebraeum, Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Hyalomma marginatum rufipes on the buffaloes. Both acaricides were effective against R. appendiculatus and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) decoloratus in the eland. The amitraz/cypermethrin acaricide was effective against R. (Boophilus) decoloratus in the blesbok. Ticks can cause damage to the skins, secondary infections, abscesses, anaemia, loss of condition, tick toxicosis and act as vectors of infectious diseases. Introduction of hosts and/or ticks from endemic to non-endemic areas because of translocation of game, may lead to severe losses. The pouron acaricides tested were effective against natural tick infestations and should always be used according to the manufacturer's instructions and efficacy claims.  相似文献

A study was conducted in two locations, Wyoming and Wisconsin, USA, to evaluate the persistent efficacy of doramectin topical solution at a dose rate of 500 microg/kg body weight against artificially induced infestations of Bovicola bovis and Solenopotes capillatus on cattle. At each location, lice-free beef calves were individually housed and randomly allocated to treatment. Both B. bovis and S. capillatus were transferred from untreated donor animals to doramectin-treated cattle at the end of 35, 63, 91 or 126 day post-treatment periods. Cattle treated with a saline pour-on served as the control. Based on the geometric means of lice counts 2 weeks following transfer, the persistent efficacy of a single treatment with doramectin topical solution against induced infestations of B. bovis was 100.0, 100.0, 99.5, and 100.0% at post-treatment days of 35, 63, 91, and 126, respectively. Persistent efficacy against induced infestations of S. capillatus, for the same intervals, were 100.0, 94.9, 86.3, and 74.9%.  相似文献

Seven controlled studies were conducted to investigate the efficacy of selamectin against weekly infestations of dogs with Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Dermacentor variabilis. Treatments (selamectin or vehicle alone) were applied topically at weekly, 2-week, or monthly intervals or in a "Monthly Plus" regimen (monthly treatment with an additional treatment at 14 days after the first treatment). Selamectin was supplied in unit dose tubes designed to deliver a minimum dosage of 6mgkg(-1). The studies ranged in duration from 37 to 90 days. Fifty adult ticks (+/-2) were applied approximately weekly, and tick counts were performed 3, 4, and 5 days after each infestation. The efficacy of selamectin was expressed as the percentage reduction in geometric mean tick counts on selamectin-treated dogs compared with those for dogs treated with the vehicle alone (negative-control). In one study, the engorgement of Dermacentor variabilis was assessed by weighing ticks after removal on the fifth day after each infestation. Weekly and 2-week interval treatments with selamectin provided efficacies against R. sanguineus of >89% across the entire study periods, with 100% efficacy being achieved from 21 days after the first dose and thereafter (study duration, 37 days for the weekly regimen and 44 days for the 2-week interval regimen). D. variabilis also was well controlled by the 2-week interval treatment regimen, with >96% efficacy being achieved from 21 days after the first treatment and thereafter until the end of the study (study duration: 90 days). In five of six studies incorporating three treatments at monthly intervals, the percentage reduction in R. sanguineus and D. variabilis counts 5 days after infestation ranged from 90 to 100% in the second and third months after treatment began. In the sixth study, reductions of > or =95% in D. variabilis counts 5 days after infestation were achieved for 2 weeks after each treatment in the second and third months. For the Monthly Plus regimen, from the second treatment (day 14) onwards, selamectin achieved 83-100% reductions in R. sanguineus and D. variabilis counts 3 days after infestation, and 94-100% reductions 5 days after infestation in three of the four studies. In the fourth study, selamectin demonstrated good efficacy against D. variabilis for 2 weeks after each treatment. In all seven studies, the counts from the selamectin-treated dogs were significantly (P< or =0.018) lower than those from the vehicle-treated dogs on 77 of the 80 assessments made 5 days after infestation. Selamectin also significantly (P< or =0.0105) reduced engorgement of female D. variabilis. These studies demonstrated that selamectin, administered topically to the skin in a single spot at a minimum dosage of 6mgkg(-1) at monthly intervals, was effective in the control of experimentally induced R. sanguineus and D. variabilis infestations on dogs.  相似文献

The relative resistance to different cattle ticks of Gudali and Wakwa cattle with different levels of Brahman breeding, grazed on natural pastures in the subhumid tropics of Wakwa, Cameroon, was assessed using pasture tick infestations. The basic design consisted of 5 young bulls of each breed from different sire herds. Tick populations were observed in Gudali and Wakwa bulls over a period of four weeks when the climate was thought to be highly favourable for the free-living stages of ticks. Counting of adult, larval and nymphal ticks was carried out in the morning of each counting day on the body surface of cattle after restraining them. Ticks were identified by species and sex. Repeated measures analysis of variance technique was used to account for time trends and breed differences. Results showed that Wakwa cattle carried slightly more ticks than Gudali cattle. However, this difference was not statistically significant. Significant within breed differences in tick counts suggested that selection for resistance to ticks, particularly Amblyomma variegatum, can be effective within each breed. The tick species recorded by order of decreasing abundance were Amblyomma variegatum, Rhipicephalus lunulatus and Hyalomma spp. It was clear from this study that long-term investigations would be necessary to ascertain the extent of the differences in tick counts between these two breeds of cattle and to assess the biological mechanisms of resistance to Amblyomma variegatum as well as to estimate the heritability of tick resistance.  相似文献

An aqueous emulsion of amitraz (Bovitraz, Bayer AH), prepared and applied according to the manufacturer's recommendations, was evaluated for its activity against cattle ticks on a dairy farm in Ethiopia. Eight crossbred heifer calves aged between 6 and 8 months and heavily infested with ticks were selected and divided into equal treatment and control groups. The calves in the treatment group were hand-sprayed with the amitraz emulsion while the control group was left untreated. Each calf was restrained and ticks were counted and identified in situ. One hundred percent tick control was achieved on Day 3 after acaricide application, and this was maintained for a further 18 days. The residual effect was long, and protected the animals from re-infestation for 21 days. There was a significant difference between the mean number of ticks on the control group compared to the treated group (P < 0.05). An important finding in this trial was the rapid detachment of all tick instars from animals treated with the test acaricide.  相似文献

A cross-sectional study was carried out in order to investigate the association between management risk factors and the prevalence of organophosphate (OP) and synthetic pyrethroid (SP) resistance in Boophilus microplus ticks in Yucatan State, Mexico. Ninety-eight cattle ranches were randomly selected and a sample of 20-30 engorged female B. microplus ticks was collected at each. The modified larvae packet test was used to detect OP and SP tick resistance. A questionnaire was administered on each ranch. For risk factors, four reference types of response were used: Tuxpan (resistant to coumaphos, chlorfenvinphos and diazinon), Parkhurst (resistant to flumethrin, deltamethrin and cypermethrin), Lamington (resistant to flumethrin in absence of deltamethrin and cypermethrin) and Marmor (resistant to flumethrin and cypermethrin in absence of flumethrin). A primary screening was performed using 2 x 2 contingency tables of exposure variables. All variables with p < or = 0.20 were analyzed by a logistic regression. The prevalence of B. microplus resistance to OP and SP groups were 83.70% and 66.32%, respectively. The prevalence for a single chemical compound was: diazinon (80.60%), coumaphos (45.90%), chlorfenvinphos (35.70%), flumethrin (63.28%), deltamethrin (61.22%), and cypermethrin (59.18%). The prevalence type of response was: Tuxpan (34.16%), Parkhurst (58.16%), Lamington (4.08%), and Marmor (4.08%). The use of a different tick control program was the risk management factor associated with the Parkhurst type of response. It is concluded that the prevalence of cattle ranches with B. microplus resistant to OPs and SPs in Yucatan, Mexico, is a current problem, and a treatment interval of > or =6 times/year and use of a tick control program (macrocyclic lactones and pasture burn) different from standard recommended programs are risk factors associated with the Parkhurst type of response.  相似文献

The effects of the bont tick Amblyomma hebraeum on the productivity of cattle need to be quantified in order to design economically optimal control programs. Liveweight gains (LWGs) of three groups of Africander steers, maintained in the same pasture and exposed to zero, medium or high numbers of larvae, nymphs and adults of the tick, were measured. Larvae and nymphs had no significant effect on LWG but adults had a large, statistically significant effect (P less than 0.05). The tick-free group had an average LWG of 20 kg more than the heavily infested group after 3.5 months. No mortality was recorded from ticks or tick-borne diseases during the experiment. There was no relationship between the number of engorging adult female ticks counted and loss of LWG of individual animals. The latter suggests that exposure to ticks as well as engorgement by female ticks causes losses. The loss per adult female that completed engorgement was estimated, by relating the LWGs of individual animals to their tick infestations, to be 4 +/- 2 g per adult female tick. An alternative estimate, made by comparing the average LWG and tick infestations of each treatment group, was equal to 10 +/- 4 g. This latter estimate includes the effect of challenge (and rejection) as well as tick feeding and so was accepted as giving the best estimate. Screw-worm fly (Chrysomya bezziana) struck an average of 7.5% of the cattle infested with ticks in any week but the effects on the productivity of the cattle were minimized by immediate treatment. There was a significant, positive correlation between the incidence of screw-worm fly strike and the numbers of adult ticks counted on the experimental animals. The results provide data for calculating losses caused by A. hebraeum in different parts of its geographical range.  相似文献

Sixty male weaner cattle at the National Range Research Station, Kiboko, Kenya were placed in four groups of 15 animals under four different tick control regimens for 16 months. The treatment groups were: spraying with acaricide weekly, spraying every three weeks, spraying whenever group mean tick infestations reached more than 200 per animal (once only in the course of the study) and a control unsprayed group. The cattle were weighed monthly. There were no significant differences between the liveweight gains of the groups during a period of severe drought and during the following period of compensatory weight gain. The untreated group gained more weight than the other groups. Cattle died in all groups, but without significant differences between the groups; the long drought and associated malnutrition were the prime cause of death. Rhipicephalus pravus and R pulchellus were the dominant tick species with fewer Amblyomma gemma, Hyalomma truncatum and small numbers of Boophilus decoloratus and R evertsi. These ticks transmit anaplasmosis, babesiosis and cowdriosis in the study area. Total tick counts reached 750 on individual animals but group means rarely reached more than 200 because of high resistance to ticks in some animals. Host resistance ranking within groups was virtually constant throughout the experiment. The study showed that intensive tick control is not required in the semi-arid areas of Africa.  相似文献

Four studies were conducted to show the effectiveness of a novel combination of fipronil, amitraz and (S)-methoprene in a spot-on formulation (CERTIFECT?, Merial Limited, GA, USA) for the therapeutic and preventive control of Ixodid tick species affecting dogs in Europe: Ixodes ricinus, Dermacentor reticulatus and Rhipicephalus sanguineus. In each, untreated control dogs were compared to others treated with the novel combination. All dogs were infested with 50 adult, unfed ticks prior to treatment and at 7-day intervals after treatment. Ticks on all dogs were counted at 18, 24 and 48 h after treatment (therapeutic efficacy) or infestation (preventive efficacy). Therapeutic efficacy of fipronil, amitraz and (S)-methoprene was excellent as shown by significant (p<0.05) and greater than 97% and up to 100% reductions in the 48 h tick counts and significant (p<0.05) detachment/death of ticks evident at 18-24h after treatment for all three tick species. Preventive efficacy was demonstrated by significant (p<0.05) and greater than 93% and up to 100% reductions in tick counts at 48 h after repeat infestations out to 35 days after treatment for I. ricinus and out to 42 days after treatment for D. reticulatus and R. sanguineus. The time to substantial disruption of establishment of new tick infestations after treatment was less than 18-24h and was maintained for up to 28 days after treatment of I. ricinus and D. reticulatus infestations, and 4h to at most 18 h and maintained up to 35 days after treatment of R. sanguineus. Similar preventive efficacy profiles for each of the Ixodid species tested suggest that CERTIFECT kills all Ixodid species starting 4h after contact as demonstrated for R. sanguineus.  相似文献

Goats naturally infested with Damalinia caprae lice were used to evaluate the efficacy of flumethrin pour-on. The maximum load of lice infestation was detected in the neck region. The LC50 value of flumethrin pour-on against D. caprae was found to be 119.35 ppm and the 95% confidence limits were calculated to be 104.10 and 136.85 ppm. Flumethrin at the rate of 1 mg/kg body weight by pour-on application along the mid-dorsal line was found to be 100% effective in treating lice-infested goats compared with the control goats. The residual action of flumethrin was found to be at least 42 days during which period no apparent signs of any local or general adverse effects were observed. Based on these studies, it is suggested that flumethrin pour-on may be successfully used for both the prophylaxis and treatment of D. caprae infestation in goats and it is necessary to repeat the treatment after 42 days. The method of application is highly advantageous as it can be conveniently applied, even in animals with thick hair coat and during the winter months.  相似文献

Five laboratory studies were conducted to confirm that a single topical dose of the novel combination of fipronil, amitraz and (S)-methoprene, CERTIFECT? (Merial Limited, GA, USA), is efficacious for the rapid control of pre-existing infestations and the prevention of new infestations with Ixodes scapularis, Dermacentor variabilis, Amblyomma americanum and Amblyomma maculatum for at least 28 days on dogs. In each study, 8 male and 8 female purpose-bred, laboratory beagles were randomly assigned to one of two study groups (treated and untreated). Starting on the day before treatment, each dog was infested weekly with about 30 or 50 ticks, depending on the study. Treatment with the novel combination rapidly eliminated pre-existing infestations and controlled weekly re-infestations for at least 28 days. Pre-existing infestations with all four tick species were rapidly and effectively reduced, with post-treatment therapeutic efficacies ranging from 91.7 to 99.5% within 18-48 h post treatment. Amblyomma maculatum numbers were significantly (p<0.05) reduced on treated dogs from the first tick counts as early as 6h post-treatment. All subsequent infestations with each of the 4 tick species were quickly disrupted, with prophylactic efficacies greater than 90% within 18-48 h post-infestation for at least a full month. Because the combination of fipronil, amitraz and (S)-methoprene quickly starts disrupting and killing ixodid ticks within hours of treatment, with similar high levels of efficacy maintained for at least 28 days in these and other studies, the authors conclude that a single topical treatment with CERTIFECT may prevent the transmission of most infectious agents carried by ixodid ticks for at least one month.  相似文献

SUMMARY The efficacy of one administration of moxidectin against natural infestations of the 3 common species of cattle lice in Australia: Linognathus vitull, Damallnla bovls and Haematoplnus eurysternus, was determined. A high degree of control of L vituli (too long-nosed sucking louse) was achieved with both the cattle Injection (96.7% and 100%) at 0.2 mg/kg and the cattle pour-on formulation (94.6% and 100%) at 0.5 mg/kg on the 2 farms where this louse occurred. An Injection of moxidectin at 0.2 mg/kg did not eliminate D bovis. In these trials efficacy ranged from nll to 85.2%. In contrast the pour-on formulation at 0.5 mg/kg provided consistently high efficacy (83.6 to 100%) against D bovis on 3 farms. Infestations of H eurysternus (the short-nosed sucking louse) were low and no significant difference was recorded between treatment groups In a single trial, however, lice persisted on 3 to 7 cattle In the untreated group at each Inspection, whereas none were found on any animals in the 2 groups treated with moxidectin on Inspection after treatment.  相似文献

Four laboratory studies were conducted to demonstrate that a single topical dose of a novel spot-on combination containing fipronil, amitraz and (S)-methoprene (CERTIFECT?, Merial Limited, GA, USA) is efficacious against the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus. In each study, 6-8 male and 6-8 female purpose-bred, laboratory mongrels, terrier cross or Beagles were randomly assigned to one of two study groups (treated and untreated), based on pre-treatment parasite counts. Starting on the day before treatment, each dog was infested weekly with 50 ticks. Ticks were thumb counted at various time points after treatment and weekly infestations starting as early as 6h and continued at 12, 18 and 24h depending on the study. Ticks were removed and counted at 48 h after treatment and weekly infestations. CERTIFECT provided rapid and excellent control of pre-existing and newly acquired infestations of R. sanguineus with efficacy as high as 93% within the first 12h after a single topical treatment. Excellent control (>96%) of R. sanguineus as early as 18 h, following post treatment infestations was maintained for at least 35 days.  相似文献

The efficacy of a single whole-body spray of spinosad, a naturally derived control agent, applied at three concentrations was evaluated against cattle infested three separate times prior to treatment and at four weekly intervals following treatment with Boophilus microplus (Canestrini). At 0.0167% active ingredient (AI) both tick numbers (1894 ticks per calf) and index of fecundity (IF) of females (258.3) were no different than that of the control group. However, spinosad treatment at both 0.05 and 0.15% AI resulted in fewer ticks per calf (600 and 935, respectively) with lower IF values for females (43.4 and 38.4, respectively). The percent control of ticks on the animals at the time of treatment (acute efficacy) was dramatically lower at 0.0167% AI (21.4%) than at 0.05 (86.3%) and 0.15% AI (87.9%). Spinosad treatments appeared to be more effective against immature stages (nymphs and larvae) than against adult ticks that were on the animals at the time of treatment. The mean weight of females that survived to repletion was similar (322-348 mg) in all groups. By contrast, the mean weight of egg masses produced by females was highest in the control group (155 mg), whereas each increase in spinosad concentration resulted in a substantial decrease in egg mass weight, with the 0.15% AI group averaging only 73 mg. The hatch rate of eggs derived from females ranged from 93.4% in control females down to 53.9% hatch for females treated at 0.15% AI spinosad. The residual efficacy of spinosad at 0.0167% AI was poor even at 1 week following treatment, resulting in 101 ticks per calf and a level of control of only 66.4%. At 0.05% AI, protection against successful reinfestation was high at 1-week post-treatment where only five ticks per calf reached repletion, and control of the IF of these females was 99.3%. The 0.15% AI treatment provided almost complete protection against reinfestation for 2 weeks following treatment (< or =5 ticks per calf), and control of the IF of these ticks was >99.9%. Thus, the use of spinosad at US ports-of-entry would be unacceptable because of the critical necessity of achieving 100% control with a single treatment to prevent the reintroduction of ticks. However, it is likely ticks could be eradicated using spinosad in tick infested areas of the US if repeated (systematic) treatments were applied to cattle maintained on the premises.  相似文献

A cross-sectional study was conducted in Tanga and Iringa regions of Tanzania, and a longitudinal study in Tanga, to investigate tick-control methods and other factors influencing tick attachment to the cattle of smallholder dairy farms. Most farmers reported applying acaricides at intervals of 1-2 weeks, most used acaricides that require on-farm dilution and most farmers incorrectly diluted the acaricides. Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and Boophilus spp. ticks were those most-frequently encountered on the cattle, but few cattle carried ticks of any species (only 13 and 4.6% of tick counts of the cattle yielded adult R. appendiculatus and Boophilus spp., respectively). Animals were more likely to carry one or more adult Boophilus spp. ticks if they also carried one or more R. appendiculatus adults (OR=14.4, CI=9.2, 22.5). The use of pour-on acaricides was associated with lower odds that animals carried a R. appendiculatus tick (OR=0.29, CI=0.18, 0.49) but higher odds that they carried a Boophilus spp. tick (OR=2.48, CI=1.55, 3.97). Animals >4 months old and those with a recent history of grazing had higher odds of carrying either a R. appendiculatus (ORs=3.41 and 2.58, CIs=2.34, 4.98 and 1.80, 3.71), or a Boophilus spp. tick (ORs=5.70 and 2.18, CIs=2.34, 4.98 and 1.49. 3.25), but zero-grazing management did not prevent ticks attaching to cattle even when combined with high-frequency acaricide treatments. The odds that animals carried ticks varied amongst the agro-ecological zones (AEZs) and administrative districts where the farms were situated-but there was still considerable residual variation in tick infestation at the farm level.  相似文献
