Turbot Scophthalmus maximus exhibits sexually dimorphic growth, with females growing faster and reaching larger adult sizes than males. Thus, development of techniques for preferentially producing females is necessary to optimize production of these species. In this paper, gynogenetic diploids of turbot were induced by activating egg development with ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated left-eyed flounder Paralichthys olivaceus sperm combined with cold shock to prevent extrusion of the second polar body. The results of UV irradiation experiments showed that survival, motility, and duration of activity of P. olivaceus sperm generally decreased with increase in UV dose. The typical Hertwig’s effect was observed after fertilized turbot eggs with UV-irradiated P. olivaceus sperm and the optimal UV dose for gynogenetic haploid production was 36,000 erg mm−2. At 15°C, appropriate timing of cold shock for retention of the second polar body in turbot eggs was at 6 min after fertilization. Results of different combinations of two shock temperatures (1 or 3°C) and four shock durations (15, 25, 35 or 45 min) at 6 min after fertilization demonstrated that shock of 25 min at 1°C gave the highest production of diploid gynogens (39.58% relative to its diploid control). The results of this study reveal that the use of UV-irradiated P. olivaceus sperm for activation of turbot eggs and cold shock for polar body retention is an effective method to produce gynogenetic offspring.  相似文献

In Chile, the species Choromytilus chorus stands out for its ecological and economic importance. This mussel has a very particular condition in the colour of the gonad, being cream‐yellow colour the male gonad and dark brown the female which is hardly desired by the consumers. In this context, the aim of this research is to determine the role that sex steroids have in gonadal differentiation of the mussel C. chorus. For this, juveniles with sizes 15–22 mm were selected, which were subjected to acute exposure in the form of bath for 60 days to four treatments: T1: dihydrotestosterone (DHT); T2: 17β‐estradiol (E2), T3: fadrozole (F) and T4: DHT‐F (DF), plus a control without chemicals. Each treatment as well as control included three replicates with 90 individuals each. The mussels undergoing treatment with E2 had a sex ratio (male:female) of 0.47 compared to 1:1 in the control group. In contrast, in the groups treated with DHT, F and DF the sex ratio changed to 2.0, 1.60 and 1.70 respectively. In the fertilization trials, all the mussels produced functional gametes, as they were able to generate gametes that were developed to morula, and veliger larva. Nevertheless, it should be noted that the size of oocytes from the group exposed to estradiol (61.12 ± 2.40 μm) was significantly higher than in other groups. These results support the hypothesis that sex steroids would be involved in sexual differentiation of marine bivalves.  相似文献

In this study we examined the endocrine mediation between environmental factors (temperature and photoperiod) and the brain–pituitary–gonadal axis in females of pejerrey Odontesthes bonariensis. Changes in the expression of brain gonadotropin-releasing hormones (GnRHs) and gonadotropin (GtH) subunit [follicle stimulating-β (FSH-β), luteinizing hormone-β (LH-β), glycoprotein hormone-α (GPH-α)] genes, plasma gonadal steroids [estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T)], gonadal histology, and gonadosomatic index (GSI) in adult females exposed to combinations of short-day (8 h) or long-day (16 h) photoperiods and low (12°C) or high (20°C) temperatures after winter conditions (8 h light, 12°C) were analyzed. Pejerrey females kept under the short photoperiod had low GSIs, and their ovaries contained only previtellogenic oocytes regardless of the experimental temperature. In contrast, females exposed to the long photoperiod had high GSIs and ovaries with vitellogenic oocytes at both temperatures. These fish also showed a significantly higher expression of sGnRH, pjGnRH, cGnRH-II (the three different GnRH variants found to date in the pejerrey brain), FSH-β, LH-β and GPH-α genes and plasma E2 levels than those at the shorter photoperiod. No significant changes were observed in plasma T levels. Based on these results, we concluded that the increase in day length but not that of temperature triggers the maturation of pejerrey females after the winter period of gonadal rest and that this occurs by an integrated stimulation of the various components of the brain–pituitary–gonad axis.  相似文献

We evaluated the growth and survival rate of sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) larvae fed Artemia nauplii enriched with Olioω3 or Red Pepper commercial emulsions (BernAqua NV, Belgium). Sterlet larvae, 0.022 ± 0.002 g body weight, were randomly assigned to one of three feeding regimes with two different feeding durations. After administering live feed for 7 or 14 days, larvae were weaned onto commercial food and reared to 36 days posthatching (28 days of feeding). There were no significant differences in body weight among groups at the end of the trial. A significantly higher survival rate (p < 0.05) was observed in larvae fed Artemia enriched with Red Pepper for 14 days compared to other feeding regimes. Based on the analysis of growth parameters, we can conclude that 7 days of live feeding to be sufficient for efficient rearing of sterlet larvae. And longer duration of live feeding with use of special enrichment can be recommended for a higher survival rate.  相似文献

Gonad development and sexual differentiation are important biological processes. More insight is needed in these processes to improve selection and breeding efficiency in the production of culture animals for monosex farm operations of commercially important shellfish species. Foxl2 is the earliest known sex dimorphic marker of ovarian differentiation in mammals, but studies on foxl2 in invertebrate species are rare. This study revealed the gonadogenesis and expression characteristics of foxl2 during the gonadal differentiation in the scallop Chlamys farreri, an important commercial mollusk in China. The result showed that C. farreri gonad becomes visible once juveniles reach a shell height of 5.5 mm. Sex can be distinguished based on gonad histology in animals with a minimum shell height of 9 mm. Expression of Cf‐foxl2 (C. farreri foxl2) was first observed in cytoplasm of ovarian germ and follicle cells, just after the initiation of ovarian differentiation. Results indicate that Cf‐foxl2 can be used as an early sex‐marker gene, and may have participated in the regulation of ovary differentiation in C. farreri.  相似文献

In the present study, methodology of gynogenetic induction in spotted halibut were developed and optimized; the sex ratio of putative meiotic gynogenetic diploids was determined using AFLP-based molecular sexing technique; the homozygosity of gynogenetic population was assessed as opposed to cultivated population. The results showed that high percentage of meiotic gynogenetic diploids were generated when the eggs fertilized with irradiated heterologous sea perch frozen sperm (30–50 mJ cm−2) were cold shocked in sea water of −1°C for 40–75 min at 5 min after fertilization. About 15,200 diploid gynogenetic larvae were achieved and they exhibited normal morphology similar to diploid control. The gynogenetic diploids were 100% female, which first confirmed the female homogamete (XX/XY) sex determination in spotted halibut. The genetic analysis showed that the average H O was, respectively, 0.404 and 0.724 in gynogenetic population and cultivated population, indicating an increase of homozygosity in gynogenetic population.  相似文献

Metal enrichment makes oyster considered to be an appropriate food source for trace elements, but excessive accumulation can threaten human health. Reproduction is an important biotic factor that affects the metal accumulation in oysters. However, the influence of continuous gonad development model on metal accumulation in some subtropical oysters is still unclear. The present study addresses the concentrations of trace metals and glycogen associated with the gonadal and somatic tissues throughout the reproductive cycle of diploid and triploid Crassostrea angulata cultured in Fujian, China. Cu, Zn and Pb contents of gonads were negatively correlated (p < 0.05) with gonadosomatic index (GSI). The correlation between Cd content and GSI was not significant. There was a positive correlation (p < 0.05) between GSI and Mn content in female gonads while the correlation was negative (p < 0.05) in males, indicating Mn plays an important role in gametogenesis of females. The effects of gonadal maturity and gender on metal accumulation in somatic tissue were not significant (p > 0.05). The concentrations of all metals in sterile triploids were not significantly different from those of the somatic tissue of diploids. Gonadal glycogen content showed a negative correlation with the GSI. However, somatic glycogen content was not affected by gonadal development, indicating that the energy consumed during gametogenesis comes mainly from recently ingested food rather than from energy stored in somatic tissue. The effects of the gonadal development on the metal accumulation in oysters varied according to the metal and tissue type.  相似文献

A 20-week growth trial was conducted to investigate the effect of two dietary blended vegetable oils (VO) on liver lipogenic enzyme activity, liver and gonad lipid class composition and fatty acid profiles, serum sex hormones, and gonad morphohistology in gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata. Three groups of fish (BW i 130.9 ± 3.1 g) were fed, close to satiation, three experimental diets: a control (CTRL) contained fish oil (FO) as the sole lipid source (100% FO) and two VO-blended diets in each 60% of FO was substituted by an equal mixture of cottonseed oil (CO), sunflower oil (SFO) and either linseed oil (LO) or soybean oil (SBO), designated as LO or SBO diet, respectively. Each diet was assigned to triplicate groups of fish. Results showed that all dietary treatments presented no significant (P > 0.05) differences in growth rate and feed conversion ratio for sexes combined. Enzyme activities of liver lipogenic enzymes of LO-fed fish (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), malic enzyme (ME) and fatty acid synthetase (FAS)) were not statistically (P > 0.05) different from those of CTRL fish. Only in the group of fish fed the SBO diet, G6PDH was slightly higher (P < 0.05) for both sexes, while ME showed a significant (P < 0.05) higher activity only in females relative to CTRL fish. Liver FAS enzyme activity remained unaltered among dietary groups. VO-fed fish recorded a significant (P < 0.05) increase in total lipid (TL) and triglyceride (TAG) contents in both liver and gonad, more pronounced in females than in males, concurrent with a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in cholesterol (CHL) and phospholipids (PL), more obvious for the SBO-fed fish, as compared to CTRL. The fatty acid (FA) composition of liver or gonad reflected that of the supplied diet and evidenced a significant (P < 0.01 or <0.05) alteration in the majority of individual FA in VO-fed fish compared to CTRL. There were decreased levels of ARA (20:4 n-6), EPA (20:5 n-3), and DHA (22:6 n-3) in VO-fed fish, more pronounced in females than in males, compared to CTRL. The liver and gonad FA profiles, for males and females, reflected the composition of the diet and showed sex variation in the output of multivariate principal component analysis (PCA). Feeding fish VO diets has also led to a significant (P < 0.05) reduction in serum estradiol level by 15.8 or 22.3% in LO- or SBO-fed fish, respectively, and in testosterone level by 7.7% in the latter dietary group only compared to the CTRL. Histomorphological examination of ovary and testis has indicated a relative retardation in oogenesis and spermatogenesis in VO-fed fish, less obvious in the LO-fed fish compared to CTRL. These results suggest a preference of LO over SBO blend diet in terms of liver lipogenic enzyme activity, liver and gonad lipid content, lipid class composition and fatty acid profile, serum sex hormones as well as gonad maturation. PCA analysis of gonads highlighted the importance of using a 100% marine FO diet for gilthead seabream broodstock for the recovery of a normal FA profile in gonads of fish, previously fed VO over the production cycle, to ensure successful spawning.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the long‐term effects (7‐month experiment) of diets consisting of fish oil (Kilka fish) and vegetable oil (rapeseed) on the reproductive performance of sterlet sturgeon (Acipenser ruthenus) broodstock. Forty‐five broodstock (990.3 ± 20.05 g) were randomly allocated to three different diet treatments. Three experimental diets were formulated with graded levels of fish oil (100% FO), vegetable oil (100% VO), and a combination of fish and vegetable oil (50% FO + 50% VO). At the end of the 7‐month feeding trial period, the weight gain and final weight were changed significantly different between the treatments (p < 0.05). Broodstock fed the FO + VO diet had higher growth than those fed the only FO or VO diets (p < 0.05). The highest germinal vesicle migration percentage was observed in FO + VO treatment (p < 0.05). The DHA/EPA, DHA/ARA and EPA/ARA ratios in oocyte exhibited a significant difference in the different treatments (p < 0.05). This study indicates that nutrition of broodstock with diet including FO + VO (p < 0.05) can positively affect the growth performance of larvae compared with only FO or VO diets. Furthermore, the high levels of 18:1n‐9, AL and ALA contents in oocytes from broodstock fed VO and the lowest ALA content in oocytes from broodstock fed FO underlined the important role of broodstock diets in the reproductive process and embryonic and/or larval developments of sterlet.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the period of sex differentiation and the pattern of gonadal differentiation in Nibea albiflora using histological techniques. The fish were raised in temperature between 19.5 and 21.5°C. The promordial gonads formed at the posterior region of the abdomen and the fish remained undifferentiated till the 36 day post hatching (dph) with a total length (TL) of 21.20 ± 3.90 mm. Ovarian differentiation precedes testicular differentiation, as usual in teleost fish. Oocytes undergoing meiosis at zygotene (bouquet) and pachytene stages were firstly observed when the total length reached 33.05 ± 4.61 mm at 40 dph, and the formation of the ovarian cavity began simultaneously at 46 dph with total length of 49.40 ± 4.83 mm. When the mean total length reached 78.05 ± 5.24 mm (61 dph), ovarian cavity grew bigger, and oocytes were firstly detected. By contrast, signs of morphological differentiation in the presumptive testis are not observed until their total length reached 69.18 ± 5.26 mm at 55 dph. The unrestricted lobular organization of the testis is evident at the stage of TL = 78.05 ± 5.24 mm (61 dph). These findings indicate that N. albiflora is a differentiated gonochorist and the critical period of sex differentiation in N. albiflora occurs at the stage of TL = 21.20 ± 3.90 mm (36 dph).  相似文献

Adult (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) purple sea urchins were fed giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) and sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca) macroalgae that were unenriched and enriched with nutrients. Urchins were fed over 10 weeks (5% body weight per day) under laboratory conditions to determine the effect of macroalgae species and treatment (enriched and unenriched) on growth, gonad index and gonad quality. Significant differences were observed when urchins were fed enriched Macrocystis pyrifera (MPE). Gonad weight increased from 0.7 ± 0.1 g (mean ± SD) to 5.9 ± 1 g, and gonad index increase from 3.5 ± 1.5% to 14.9 ± 2.3% over 10 weeks. Significant differences were also noted in gonad quality, and gonad colour and firmness were better in urchins that were fed unenriched M. pyrifera (MPUE) and MPE – whereas texture did not differ between M. pyrifera treatments and unenriched U. lactuca (ULUE). With regard to taste, gonads were sweeter in MPE‐fed individuals. Enriched U. lactuca (ULE) failed to grow gonads significantly; as a result, their quality was unacceptable for the market. These results suggest that S. purpuratus experience increased gonad production and quality in short periods when fed nutrient‐enriched M. pyrifera.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to test the efficiency of an aromatase inhibitor, letrozole (LZ), to induce masculinization in blue drum (Nibea mitsukurii) and gynogenetic yellow drum (N. albiflora). Two experiments (Exp‐1 and Exp‐2) were performed to investigate the effect of LZ on the growth, sex ratio and gonad development in these two fishes. In Exp‐1, blue drum were treated with oral administration of letrozole at different doses (0, 1, 10, 100 mg/kg). In Exp‐2, gynogenetic yellow drum were orally administered different doses of LZ (0, 10, 100 mg/kg) and a dose of 10 mg/kg 17α‐methyltestosterone (MT). The treatments in both experiments were performed from 25 to 85 days post hatch (dph). As a result, all the LZ‐treated fish were phenotypic males despite of slower growth than the control during the treatment period. Free spermatozoa were observed from 150 dph onwards and the gonadosomatic index of the LZ‐treated fish did not differ significantly from that in the control at maturity. However, the sex‐reversed fish induced by MT exhibited a high proportion (33.4%) of testicular abnormalities. Our results showed that oral administration of LZ was efficient in inducing sex reversal in drums, and thereby facilitated their mono‐sex culture.  相似文献

A number of aquaculture species, including channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus, are fed high proportions of soybean meal in their diet. We have investigated the potential for the most common phytoestrogen in soybean meal to alter phenotypic sex during sexual differentiation in channel catfish. Channel catfish were fed four dietary concentrations of the phytoestrogen genistein (0, 2, 4, and 8 mg g−1) to determine its effect on gonadal sex differentiation. The four treatment diets were fed to sexually undifferentiated channel catfish between 5 and 140 days post hatch (dph) and between 60 and 150 dph. Phenotypic sex was determined by histological examination of the gonads. Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase activity was not significantly different among the treatment and control groups. Phenotypic sex was significantly dependant on dietary phytoestrogen concentration (P = 0.01). Additionally, logistic regression showed a significant relation between genistein concentration in the diet and gonadal sex (P = 0.02). Intersex individuals were present at all treatment concentrations, with increasing proportions of intersex fish as the genistein concentration increased for individuals fed treated diets between 5 and 140 dph. Increased proportions of phenotypically male individuals resulted from chronic dietary exposure to the estrogen mimic genistein. There were no significant differences in the proportions of males and females between feed treatment durations. These findings establish that dietary concentrations of genistein can alter sex ratios in cultured channel catfish populations and demonstrates the need to further understand the actions of this and other prominent phytoestrogens in aquaculture species.  相似文献

The development of techniques for production of gynogenetic, androgenetic, polyploid, and monosex progenies in common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) is described from a chronological perspective. Gynogenetic progenies were obtained either by suppression of the second meiotic division in eggs (meiotic gynogenesis) or by suppression of the first mitotic division in haploid embryos (mitotic gynogenesis). As a rule, gynogenetic progenies of common carp were all-female, revealing female homogamety (females—XX, males—XY) in this species. Induced gynogenesis results in increased homozygosity; the rate of increase depends on the type of gynogenesis. Inbreeding coefficient (F) for one generation of meiotic gynogenesis in common carp is about 0.6, while diploids obtained by mitotic gynogenesis are homozygous for all genes (F = 1.0). Mitotic gynogenesis was used for production of clones in common carp. In androgenetic progenies of common carp, YY males were identified, that after crossing with normal females (XX) produced all-male progenies. Triploids of common carp are characterized by a significant reduction in gonad development (especially ovaries). However, the reduction in gonad development did not result in an increase of somatic growth rate of fish. The procedure for androgen treatment to induce phenotypic sex reversal in genotypic females (XX) was elaborated. All-female progenies of common carp were produced on a large scale by crossing normal females (XX) with hormonally sex-reversed males (XX). Rearing of all-female progenies in conditions when fish normally reach sexual maturity before reaching of market size increased production yield by 7–8%. In a few cases distant hybridization resulted in polyploidy of fish without application of any physical treatment. The ability of hybrid females between crucian carp (Carassius auratus) and common carp to produce diploid (with unreduced chromosome number) gametes resulted in opportunities to produce triploid and tetraploid hybrid progenies.  相似文献

This gonad enhancement study investigates the effect of different fresh and formulated feeds and feeding regimes on the growth and gonad quality of wild‐collected adult sea urchin, Tripneustes gratilla, under farm conditions for over 18 weeks. In the first 12 weeks (phase 1), urchins were fed fresh Ulva rigida (U); a 50:50 mixture of fresh U. rigida and Gracilaria gracilis (UG); fresh G. gracilis (G) and a formulated diet 20U (containing 20% U. rigida), and in the final 6 weeks (phase 2) of the study, diet was changed to a formulated feed (20U diet). By the end of phase 1, urchins fed the 20U diet produced gonads (50.72 ± 5.4 g) that were significantly heavier (p < .001) than the gonads of urchins fed the fresh seaweed diets (U, UG & G). By the end of phase 2, gonad weight of urchins in treatment groups UG‐20U and G‐20U were similar to those fed the 20U‐20U diet. Gonad colour of urchins in the G‐20U treatment became significantly lighter (ANOVA, p = .029) and poorer quality, compared with urchins in the U‐20U group. This gonad enhancement study, conducted on wild‐collected adult T. gratilla, has shown that a formulated feed (20U diet) can enhance gonad growth and produce commercially acceptable gonads. This farm‐based study supports previous findings from aquarium‐based studies by our group and indicates that short‐term sea urchin gonad enhancement can be carried out under farm conditions in South Africa.  相似文献

Zebrasoma flavescens (Bennett) aquaculture is limited by high mortality during first feeding. Photoperiod, light intensity, turbidity and prey density are culture parameters that have been shown to affect feed incidence and survival in some food fish species, offering a logical starting point to improve first feeding in Z. flavescens. This study aimed to determine the effect of photoperiod, light intensity, turbidity and prey density on feed incidence and survival in larval yellow tang age 3 DPH to 5 DPH (days post hatch). Larvae were reared in four photoperiods (24L:0D, 16L:8D, 12L:12D, 0L:24D), four light intensities (1,500, 3,000, 4,500 and 6,500 lx), three turbidity ranges (0 cells/ml, 100,000–200,000 cells/ml and 400,000–600,000 cells/ml) and four prey densities (1, 3, 6 and 9 per mL). Photoperiod at 16L:8D and 12L:12D significantly increased feed incidence; 16L:8D significantly increased survival. Light intensities at 3,000 and 4,500 lx significantly increased feed incidence. Larvae reared in 400,000–600,000 cells/ml fed and survived significantly better than those in clear water. Larvae in 1 per mL fed and survived significantly less than those fed at 6 per mL.  相似文献

Macroscopic- and histological-based assessments of gonad condition were compared with ultrasound images to determine the feasibility of this technology as a non-invasive diagnostic tool for identifying sex and assessing maturation status of Murray cod. Four age-classes (1+, 2+, 3+ and 6+ years), were sub-sampled at monthly intervals throughout their annual reproductive cycle and scanned with a 5 MHz linear transducer. An interpretation of sex was made from the resulting images and maximum cross-sectional gonad diameter and area were recorded. Fish were subsequently dissected to confirm gender, and the weights and maturation status of gonads determined and then compared with their respective image profile. Ovaries of females were usually a distinctive feature in ultrasound images, being particularly obvious in older and/or more developed fish. In contrast, the identification of male testis was more problematic. Nonetheless, identifying sex from ultrasound images was consistently achieved by recording the presence/absence of a female ovary (96% total sexing accuracy). Maximum cross-sectional ovary diameter and area were highly correlated with gonad weight (r2 = 0.90 and 0.89, respectively) suggesting that indices of maturation status, comparable to the gonadosomatic index (GSI), can be obtained non-destructively from ultrasound scans of females. A less distinct relationship occurred between these dimensions and weight of testes (r2 = 0.41). Significant increases (P < 0.05) in mean gonad index (GI, calculated from gonad diameter) occurred for most gonad development stages. However, differences in mean GI between maturation stages were confounded by phenotypic variability, indicating that GI may be limited to population level studies. Nevertheless, ultrasound images of ovaries at each development stage were visually distinctive and enabled qualitative evaluations of maturity, thereby complementing quantitative GI assessments. Repeated serial-monitoring of the same population using ultrasound appears to have great potential for tracking maturation-induced changes in broodfish.  相似文献

This study investigates the effect of high dissolved oxygen concentrations (DO) on sterlet Acipenser ruthenus maturation. Two groups, each comprising 246 individuals of 8-month-old juvenile sterlets, were reared for 37 months under high DO (group H, mean DO of 11.2 mg/L) or normal DO (group C, mean DO of 7.3 mg/L). Significant differences in body weight were observed between group H (638.7?±?191.9 g) and group C (572.2?±?151.9 g) in 12 months (P?<?0.05). Growth until 12 months occurred at a specific growth rate of 0.6%/day for group H and at 0.5%/day for group C. The food conversion rate of groups H and C was 5.2 and 5.8, respectively. The gonadosomatic index of group H was 3.1?±?1.1 for females and 3.1?±?9.7 for males, and showed no significant difference with group C (3.0?±?0.7 for females and 2.8?±?8.9 for males, P?>?0.05) in 24 months. Significant differences in follicle diameter in mature females were also observed. Group H included 68 mature females, with an average follicle diameter of 2318.0?±?175.3 µm, whereas group C included 56 mature females, with a smaller average follicle diameter of 2152.3?±?287.0 µm (P?<?0.001). However, the polarization index in group H (0.194?±?0.049) was higher than that in group C (0.178?±?0.042) (P?<?0.05). These results suggest that, for sterlet, rearing conditions with high DO can affect growth of both the body and follicle diameter of fish compared to normal rearing conditions.  相似文献

In this study, we demonstrate how stable carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) isotope analysis can be used to estimate the allocation of specific dietary ingredients, incorporated into four artificially formulated feeds supplemented with varying amounts of dried seaweed Ulva armoricana (0, 50, 150 and 200 g/kg), to the production of gonads by Tripneustes gratilla over a 20‐week growth trial. Results indicate that U. armoricana is an important dietary ingredient for gonad production, accounting for an average of 37.33 ± 1.03% of the isotopic signal recorded for gonads at the end of the growth trial. This is significantly more than fish meal and soya, which only contributed an average of 11.40 ± 1.81 and 3.80 ± 0.09%, respectively, of the isotopic signal of the gonads. Maize and wheat each account for almost 25% of all the dietary ingredients used to formulate the feeds, but their relative contribution to gonad production only averaged 8.55 ± 0.58 and 3.80 ± 0.05%, respectively, among the diets. This indicates that, at least for gonad development, these ingredients may not be required at such high levels. These findings support previous data on the importance of Ulva in abalone and urchin diets, and demonstrate the value of stable isotope analysis for assessing the contribution of specific dietary ingredients in new feed formulations, particularly where growth of specific tissues is being investigated.  相似文献

The mandarin fish Siniperca chuatsi is a historically important aquaculture species in China and exhibits sexually dimorphic growth. However, sex determination of this fish remains unclear so far. In this study, we induced meiotic gynogenesis in S. chuatsi using irradiated heterologous sperm from spotted mandarin fish (Siniperca scherzeri) to uncover its mechanism of sex determination. Up to 7.52% diploid progeny were obtained among three gynogenetic families in this study. Molecular analysis of female and male donors and sampled young gynogens by seven microsatellite loci further confirmed no genetic contributions from the ‘father’ S. scherzeri. After 8 months of culture, external morphology of adult fish showed that all gynogens were cloned from their mothers. Gonads of the gynogenetic progeny were examined by histological observations and the sexing results showed that they were almost 100% females, strongly supporting an assumption of female homogamety in mandarin fish. By this study, we obtained pure lines of S. chuatsi and elucidated its genetic mechanism of sex determination, providing a basis for possible sex control breeding in this species.  相似文献
