Two trials were conducted to investigate the effects of supplemental chromium (Cr) from organic sources (Cr chelate and high Cr yeast) on antibody responses of newly arrived feeder calves following vaccination with infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), para-influenza-3 (PI3), bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) and Pasteurella haemolytica and ovalbumin (OVA). Using cross bred steer calves purchased at sales in Ontario, vaccines and OVA were given on d 0 and 21 after arrival in the feedlot. Immune responses of calves were measured as serum specific antibody titres against all antigens on d 0 and 28 or d 35. The anti-OVA antibody responses (trial 2) were further investigated by measuring antibody concentrations of calves weekly until d 55 after arrival in the feedlot. Supplemental Cr (0.14 ppm) from an amino acid-chelated source had no effect on antibody responses to IBR, P13 and BRSV, but enhanced (P < 0.05) antibody titres of calves in response to the BVD vaccine on d 28 or d 35. Supplemental Cr from Cr yeast had no effect on antibody titres of calves to any vaccines. Chromium from both sources (trial 1 and 2) had no effect on antibody responses of calves following vaccination with P. haemolytica. However, supplemental Cr (0.75 ppm) from Cr yeast enhanced (P < 0.05) serum antibody responses of calves to OVA during the primary response (d 14) and secondary response (d 35) following immunization. These data confirmed our previous finding that supplemental Cr can enhance humoral immune response of market-transit stressed calves, but its enhancement on vaccine efficacy was antigen-dependent and variable.  相似文献

Excretory-secretory products (ESP) were collected from in vitro maintained Oesophagostomum radiatum larvae during the period in which the larvae molt from the third to fourth larval stage. The ESP were used to immunize 13 uninfected calves which were subsequently challenged with 1.7 X 10(4) infective O. radiatum larvae. Worm recoveries from immunized calves were reduced 23% compared to 12 unimmunized controls, while the number of intestinal nodules was 72% greater compared to unimmunized controls; however, neither difference was statistically significant. Immunized calves had enhanced serum IgG and IgA anti-ESP antibody responses upon challenge. No differences in serum IgG2 or IgM antibody or cellular immune responsiveness, as determined by in vitro antigen-induced lymphocyte proliferation, were seen. Vaccination with ESP did significantly protect calves from the weight loss seen in non-immunized calves. Unimmunized calves ceased gaining weight approximately 5 weeks after challenge and by 10 weeks after challenge had lost an average of 4 lbs. per calf. Over the same time interval (i.e., 5-10 weeks after challenge), the immunized calves gained an average of 23 lbs. per calf. These results strongly suggest that vaccination with ESP conferred an advantage to calves that is not correlated solely with the number of worms developing from challenge infection.  相似文献

Cell-mediated immune mechanisms may play a role in the pathogenesis and prevention of pneumonia in cattle caused by Pasteurella haemolytica serotype A1. To determine the circumstances required to stimulate and identify cell-mediated immune responses, calves were vaccinated with a commercial P. haemolytica bacterin or a live commercial P. haemolytica vaccine, or were infected intratracheally with virulent P. haemolytica. All calves were challenge-exposed intratracheally with P. haemolytica 31 d after vaccination or prior infection. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells and mediastinal and superficial cervical lymph node cells were stimulated with antigens prepared from P. haemolytica to evaluate in vitro proliferative responses and gamma-interferon production as measures of cell-mediated immunity. Strong proliferative responses and gamma-interferon production were detected in lymph node cells from calves vaccinated with the live vaccine and from infected calves, especially in response to stimulation with an outer membrane protein preparation from P. haemolytica. Greater proliferative responses and gamma-interferon production were associated with the lymph node nearer the site of bacterin administration (superficial cervical lymph node) or the site of infection (mediastinal lymph node), whereas greater proliferative responses and gamma-interferon production were associated with the more distant lymph node (mediastinal lymph node) in calves vaccinated with the live vaccine. Neither proliferative responses nor gamma-interferon production were detected in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from calves that were vaccinated for or infected with P. haemolytica. Antileukotoxin antibody titers were determined by a serum neutralization assay, and protection against pneumonic lesions was more closely correlated with antileukotoxin antibody responses than with lymphocyte proliferation or gamma-interferon responses.  相似文献

An experimental system involving injections of ovalbumin (OVA) and ferritin (FER) in Freund's incomplete adjuvant (FIA) into the right and left flank skin folds of sheep was used to study the influence of the FIA/antigen depot and the draining lymph node in maintaining an antibody response. Excision of the injection granuloma and draining lymph node from one side 2-3 months after injections resulted in a profound decrease in serum antibody titres. This response was observed in all eight sheep in the experimental group. In five of eight animals in another experiment, excision of the injection sites had no appreciable effect on antigen-specific antibody titres when compared with antibody specific for antigen on the intact side of the sheep. In the remaining three animals, excision of the injection site did cause some fall in titre. Radiotracer studies revealed that about one-third of the original [125I]OVA/FIA injected was present in the granuloma 20 weeks after injection. Lymphatic cannulation approaches were used to study the responsiveness of the lymph node draining an FIA/antigen granuloma established 12 weeks earlier and showed that increments of 1-2 mg OVA in saline administered adjacent to the granuloma at 6-7 day intervals gave rise to strong anti-OVA containing cell (AOCC) responses in lymph. There were 2-6-fold increases in serum antibody titre in response to 3-5 doses of OVA or FER (1-2 mg) in saline injected adjacent to the FIA/antigen injection site (which had been administered 14-16 weeks previously). It is concluded that the release rate of antigen from a FIA/antigen depot is insufficient to sustain maximal antibody levels in blood serum.  相似文献

Inoculation at birth with a live attenuated strain of a bovine rotavirus isolated in the USA (scourvax-reo) induced protection in five gnotobiotic calves seven to 21 days later against a UK isolate of pathogenic bovine rotavirus. However, no protection was induced in three calves challenged three to five days after vaccination. There was a close antigenic relationship demonstrated between the two bovine rotavirus isolates. In contrast only one of three gnotobiotic calves inoculated with foal rotavirus, and one of three with human rotavirus, were protected against bovine rotavirus challenge. Protection in these two calves correlated with high heterologous immunofluorescent antibody titre (320 or greater), although the neutralising antibody titres was less than 20.  相似文献

The adjuvant vaccine against infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) was tested as to its innocuousness and immunogenicity. The immunity response induced by a single or double application of different vaccine doses was evaluated according to the content of neutralization antibodies (NP) in the blood serum. A direct dependence was revealed between the size of the inoculum and NP content in the blood serum, with NP titres of 1 : 9.3; 1 : 26.6, 1 : 80 and 1 : 149 after doubled application of 1, 2, 5, and 10 ml of the vaccine. The calves inoculated at an age of one week produced antibodies in the same titres as one- to five-month-old calves. Singly inoculated animals mostly showed zero-level or low antibody titres, but revaccination induced general serum-positivity with NP titres 1 : 4 to 1 : 128. The animals which had been in contact with the IBR virus and were serologically negative during inoculation or had an NP content in the blood serum at a titre of 1 : 4 or less, gave an anamnestic response to inoculation, but revaccination did not lead to a significant rise in antibody content. Double administration of 2 ml of vaccine in four production charges induced the production of antibodies with average titres of 1 : 36, 1 : 25; 1 : 31 and 1 : 24. Inoculation of susceptible animals in non-infected herds and of clinically healthy animals in infected herds did not cause any health disorders. Antibodies were raised against lymphocyte cell-surface antigens by multiple immunisations with purified lymphocytes or by the exchange of skin allografts. Eighteen of 21 cattle immunised with lymphocytes raised a detectable cytotoxic antibody response. The serum antibody from 10 responders recognized only common lymphocyte antigens, those antigens which are present on all peripheral blood lymphocytes. One animal responded only to B lymphocyte antigens while 7 others responded to both classes of antigens. The amount of antibody produced varied greatly between individuals; antibody titres ranged from 1 to 1028. Antibody raised early in the response was sensitive to treatment with 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) suggesting that IgM was the predominant class of immunoglobulin. Subsequently antibody became resistant to this treatment suggesting the appearance of IgG. The antibody responses following the exchange of skin grafts were very similar in all 12 cattle studied. High titred antibody to common lymphocyte antigens was detected in the serum 14 days after grafting. The early antibody activity was sensitive to 2-ME treatment but became totally resistant within 14 days. Total peak antibody titres ranged from 128-2048. Antibody to B lymphocyte antigens was identified in 8 of the 12 cattle. The responses to B lymphocyte antigens were similar to those against the more widely distributed common lymphocyte antigens with respect to time of antibody appearance, time of peak titre and sensitivity to 2-ME. Peak titres ranged from 2 to 32. The change in antibody specificity with time was also studied. Sera from 11 of the 18 cattle which had responded against lymphocytes showed an increase or broadening in reaction frequency as immunisations increased, suggesting the production of antibody to secondary specificities. In the cattle which had been skin grafted, the broadest reaction patterns were seen 14 to 21 days after grafting. The broadest reaction patterns were seen when the antibody responses were at their highest titre levels and narrowed as titres decreased.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of maternal lipid supplementation on the immune response to antigenic challenge in suckling calves. In Exp. 1, beginning 1 d postpartum, 18 primiparous crossbred beef cows were fed Foxtail millet hay and a low-fat (control) supplement or a supplement containing cracked, high-linoleate safflower seed in individual feeding stanchions until d 40 of lactation. The diets were formulated to provide similar quantities of N and TDN, and the linoleate diet was formulated to contain 5% of DMI as fat. Calves were injected s.c. with 15 mg of antigen (ovalbumin) at d 21 and again at d 35 of age. To measure the total serum antibody production in response to the antigen, blood samples were collected from the calves every 7 d via jugular venipuncture from d 14 to 42. Calves from linoleate-supplemented cows had a decrease (P = 0.04) in total antibody production in response to ovalbumin and appeared to have a delayed response to antigen challenge. Total antibody production increased (P < 0.001) after secondary exposure to ovalbumin. In Exp. 2, 36 Angus x Gelbvieh beef cows that were nutritionally managed to achieve a BCS of 4 or 6 at parturition were used to determine the effects of prepartum energy balance and postpartum lipid supplementation on the passive transfer of immunoglobulins and the immune response to antigenic challenge in their calves. Beginning at 3 d postpartum and continuing until d 60 of lactation, cows were fed hay and a low-fat control supplement or supplements consisting of either cracked, high-linoleate or high-oleate safflower seeds. Safflower seed supplements were formulated to provide 5% of DMI as fat. Calves were injected s.c. with 15 mg of ovalbumin at 21 d of age and again at 48 d of age. The antibody responses were determined in serum; cell-mediated immunity was assessed by intradermal antigen injection at 60 d of age. A trend was noted (P = 0.10) for calves suckling control-supplemented cows to have a greater response to antigen compared with calves from linoleate- and oleate-supplemented cows; however, no difference was observed among treatments (P = 0.86) in cell-mediated immune response. Postpartum oilseed supplementation in beef cows appears to decrease antibody production in response to antigenic challenge in suckling calves. However, BCS at parturition did not influence passive transfer of immunoglobulins in neonatal calves.  相似文献

The in vivo administration of bovine recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) was evaluated in calves vaccinated and then challenged with bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1). In Experiment 1, 24 calves were allotted to four groups: control; bovine rIL-2; BHV-1 vaccine (modified-live); and bovine rIL-2 + BHV-1 vaccine. Serum neutralizing antibody titers to BHV-1 were increased sixfold, and virus shedding was fourfold less in calves vaccinated and treated with rIL-2 (25 micrograms/kg, intramuscularly) when compared to calves that received vaccine only. Treatment with rIL-2 induced lymphokine-activated killer activity that was eliminated by pretreating effector cells with complement and a monoclonal antibody (B26A) specific for the sheep red blood cell receptor. The rIL-2 treatment in BHV-1-vaccinated calves increased the calves' ability to withstand a BHV-1 challenge. However, during treatment with rIL-2, calves developed diarrhea and mild fever that abated after IL-2 treatment was stopped. A second experiment was then conducted to determine a dose of rIL-2 that would enhance immunity to BHV-1 without causing adverse side effects. Twenty-five calves were allotted to five groups that received injections of rIL-2 at 0.0, 25.0, 2.5, 0.25, or 0.025 micrograms kg-1 day-1 for 5 days. All calves received a modified-live BHV-1 vaccine. Calves treated with 25.0 micrograms kg-1 day-1 showed similar adverse side effects as in the first experiment but all other calves were normal. Compared to control calves, those treated with 25.0, 2.5, and 0.25 micrograms kg-1 day-1 of rIL-2 had higher (P less than 0.05) serum antibody titers to BHV-1 and following challenge lower (P less than 0.05) BHV-1 titers in nasal secretions; additionally, clinical disease as evidenced by nasal and ocular discharge was less severe (P less than 0.05). In vitro cytotoxic responses against BHV-1-infected bovine kidney cells were increased (P less than 0.05) in calves treated with rIL-2 in a dose dependent manner. These data suggest that bovine rIL-2 at 2.5 to 0.25 micrograms/kg may be an effective adjuvant to immunization.  相似文献

Six serum samples were taken at monthly intervals from birth to weaning from each of 41 newborn calves in the autumn and spring calf crops of a beef cow--calf herd. The serum hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) antibody titres to parainfluenza type 3 virus (PIV-3), virus-neutralization (VN) antibody titres to bovine adenovirus type 3 (BAV-3) and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) were determined using microtitration techniques. There was serological evidence of a significantly higher incidence of infection with BAV-3 in the fall calves than in the spring calves. Serological responses to BAV-3 were not detected in calves with VN titres of greater than 1/256. Serological evidence of subclinical infection with PIV-3 occurred mainly in late February or early March during a period of marked environmental temperature fluctuations. Serological evidence of a high incidence of infection with BRSV was obtained for both the fall and spring calf crops. Serum antibody appeared to be unable to prevent infection with BRSV. An association between infection with BRSV and clinical pneumonia was found in 3 out of 9 calves. BAV-3 infection was related to pneumonia in only 1 instance; however, there was simultaneous evidence of BRSV infection in this calf. PIV-3 infection was found to be related to pneumonia in only 1 instance. There was serological evidence of infection with BAV-3 in association with the occurrence of diarrhea in 3 calves.  相似文献

Fifty-one calves were divided into six trial groups of seven to eleven animals and vaccinated with a commercial leptospiral vaccine containing serovars pomona and hardjo. Vaccinations were given at 6,7,14 or 21 months of age and animals in various groups were vaccinated on one to four occasions. Antibody responses were determined by the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and the complement fixation test (CFT) at one to four weeks intervals until 66 weeks after the start of the trial. Fifty percent or greater agglutination in serum diluted 1:100 or more and 50% or greater fixation of complement in serum diluted 1:20 or more were considered positive titres in the MAT or CFI respectively. Positive titres were still present in some animals six weeks after vaccination at 21 months of age. In other cases MAT titres (range 1:100-1:3000) persisted for 7-23 weeks and CFI titres (range 1:20-1540) persisted for 1-14 weeks. Marked individual variation in serological findings occurred using either test. In general the number of animals producing a positive titre, and the magnitude and persistence of titres was related to the number of doses of vaccine given. It was concluded that for diagnostic purposes neither the CFT nor the MAT could reliably differentiate titres due to vaccination from those following natural infections.  相似文献

Six groups of ten beef calves six to eight months of age were shipped from western Canada and observed untreated for one week after arrival. The following parameters were measured daily: body temperature, plasma fibrinogen, nasal bacterial mean colony counts of Pasteurella hemolytica and Pasteurella multocida, total and differential leukoyte counts, packed cell volumes and the following, twice during the week: serum and nasal antibody titres to P. hemolytica and parainfluenza-3 virus. The lungs from 44 of the calves were obtained at post mortem and given a numerical score based on the degree of pneumonia present. Animals were designated SICK and WELL according to body temperature and plasma fibrinogen. The SICK animals had higher nasal mean colony counts of P. hemolytica than the WELL animals. The SICK animals had lower levels of serum antibody to P. hemolytica than the WELL on day 1 but had a greater rise in titre over the week than did the WELL animals. Both groups were similar with regard to serum antibody to parainfluenza-3 virus and there was little change in these titres. The SICK animals had a much greater degree of pneumonia than the WELL. The values of some of the parameters were combined with the data of previously studied animals in order to provide a comparison of SICK and WELL with larger numbers of animals.  相似文献

Liveweight of calves on 86 dairy farms was measured at the end of the grazing season and related per herd to the level of exposure to nematode infection estimated in October and December. There were significant between-herd variations in all the serological infection parameters measured. On average 20.5 larvae per gram faeces (geometric mean) were found in October. Faecal samples of 20.5% of the herds contained lungworm larvae. Liveweight of calves deviated per herd from -59.8 kg to +52.2 kg from an age-adjusted population mean after their first grazing season. Growth performance was significantly related negatively to several serological and parasitological parameters. Data were fitted by means of both linear and segmented curvilinear regression. By combining infection parameters 19% of the variation in growth performance among herds could be explained. Infection parameters involved were antibody titre against Cooperia spp., egg output and lungworm larval count. It was found that antibody titres were significantly correlated positively to herd age, while pepsinogen values and egg output were negatively correlated to age. Combining supplementary feeding and anthelmintic treatment during the grazing season with the infection parameters into one model explained approximately 30% of the observed variation in growth performance among herds. It was shown that these findings were consistent with those of a similar study conducted on the same farms a year earlier, although there were clear differences between the years. Finally, significant positive relations were found between the levels of exposure to nematode parasites within farms between two consecutive years.  相似文献

Antibody titres against Ostertagia spp., Cooperia spp. and Dictyocaulus viviparus as well as pepsinogen values, reflecting exposure to nematode infection, differed significantly among herds of second-year cattle on 87 farms. Faecal examinations revealed that gastrointestinal nematode infections were present in all herds. Similar results were found in yearling-herds on the same farms a year earlier. Liveweight of yearlings per herd deviated from -64.7 kg to +94.4 kg from an age-adjusted population mean after the second grazing season. This mean herd weight deviation was significantly related negatively to antibody titre against Ostertagia spp. (linear regression, P less than 0.05; segmented curvilinear regression, P less than 0.01) and to antibody titre against Cooperia spp. (segmented curvilinear regression, P less than 0.05), both measured in the second grazing season. Antibody titre against Ostertagia spp. measured in the first grazing season, when yearlings were calves, was significantly correlated positively to age-adjusted body weights at the end of the second grazing season. The results suggested that immunity built up during the first year had a positive effect on growth performance in the second year, but that on average the acquired immunity was insufficient to prevent reduced weight gains in the second grazing season.  相似文献

We examined the contribution of MHC class II-restricted T cells (CD4+), MHC class I-restricted T cells (CD8+), gamma/delta T cell receptor (TCR)+ T cells, B cells and macrophages to the development and control of in vitro proliferative responses of bovine lymphocytes to ovalbumin (OA). Cell populations for in vitro assay were obtained from peripheral blood (peripheral blood leukocytes, PBL) of OA-primed cattle. Specific cell populations were depleted or purified from PBL by staining with monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against the appropriate differentiation antigens and sorting on a Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorter (FACS). OA-specific in vitro responses of in vivo primed PBL were dependent on the presence of CD4+ T cells. Their presence could not be replaced by the inclusion of T cell growth factor (TCGF) in the culture system, indicating that CD4+ T cells probably actively proliferate in response to antigenic stimulation. Bovine CD8+ T cells and gamma/delta TCR+ T cells appeared to exert a suppressive effect on proliferative responses. No proliferation was observed in PBL after the depletion of MHC class II+ cells. In this case, the response could be restored by the addition of macrophages or LPS-activated B cells to the MHC class II- population.  相似文献

Groups of unsplenectomised steers and calves were infected with either the Onderstepoort or Sukari 1 strain of Anaplasma marginale by the injection of infected blood. The infections were treated with gloxazone (2.5 – 25 mg/kg). The serological response of the animals was monitored by the complement fixation (CF) and capillary tube agglutination (CA) tests, using antigens prepared from the Onderstepoort strain. CF antibody responses were alike in both strains. The titre rose rapidly from four days after infection to a peak around the time of the initial crisis. These high titres were maintained, and generally did not rise further at the time of recrudescence of parasitaemia. CA antibody appeared 7–10 days after infection and reached a peak shortly after the initial crisis. Titres fell as parasitaemia was reduced following gloxazone treatment, then rose as parasitaemia recrudesced. There was a close correlation between the effectiveness of gloxazone treatment and changes in CA antibody titre.  相似文献

Blood neutrophil functions, lymphocyte blastogenic responses, serum complement, and serum conglutinin activity of 98 lactating Holstein cows from two genetic lines were evaluated. The genetic lines were produced in a selection experiment that created and perpetuated genetic differences in milk production for up to seven generations. No significant differences between the two genetic lines of cows were found for neutrophil function, lymphocyte blastogenic responses, serum complement levels, or serum conglutinin levels. Significant differences between sire progeny groups within lines were found for unstimulated and mitogen-stimulated lymphocyte blastogenesis (P less than 0.0001), and almost all neutrophil functions (antibody independent neutrophil cytotoxicity, antibody dependent neutrophil cytotoxicity, ingestion of bacteria, iodination, chemiluminescence, chemokinesis, and chemotaxis (P less than or equal to 0.05)). Sire progeny group differences (P less than or equal to 0.0001) within lines for serum complement and conglutinin activity were also found. Neutrophil chemiluminescence activity (positive relationship; P less than or equal to 0.001), concanavalin A-stimulated lymphocyte blastogenesis (positive relationship; P less than or equal to 0.004), and serum conglutinin activity levels (negative relationship; P less than or equal to 0.01) each had small but significant associations with the total milk somatic cell count. Cows seropositive for bovine leukosis virus had increased resting and mitogen-stimulated lymphocyte blastogenic activity and were associated with increased in vitro neutrophil random migration and production of superoxide anion. Estimates of genetic parameters of various immune cell functions, of serum complement and of conglutinin levels for daughters of 11 sires with 4-6 daughters in the data set were determined. In this report, genetic variation was demonstrated for nonspecific humoral and cellular immunity.  相似文献

An indirect double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for the detection and titration of serum antibodies to bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV). The ELISA was compared with a complement fixation (CF) test and a test for virus neutralising antibody in serum (virus neutralisation [VN] test). Testing sera collected in dairy herds revealed the closest correlation between the results of the ELISA and the CF test with respect to BRSV antibody titres. The VN test detected BRSV antibodies in a higher percentage of acute phase sera compared to the other two tests in field samples and in early bleedings of experimentally infected calves. However, the VN test was less effective in making a diagnosis of BRSV infections on the basis of a significant titre increase in paired sera. For this purpose the ELISA was found to be the most sensitive test.  相似文献

We purified the protein antigen (P64), which contains 66 and 64 kDa proteins, from the alkaline extract (AE) of whole cells of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae strain Agata (serovar 5) to determine the protective activity of the antigen against E. rhusiopathiae infection in pigs. The serum titre of antibody against P64 rapidly increased in pigs immunized with 500 and 100 micrograms of P64 and reached maximum values at 3 weeks after the first immunization (1 week after the second immunization). However, the serum antibody titres were not increased in pigs immunized with 20 micrograms of P64 and in nonimmunized pigs. In the pigs immunized with live cell vaccine (acriflavin-fast attenuated strain Koganei 65-0.15), the serum titres of antibody against P64 also increased at 1-2 weeks after immunization. In a pig challenge test performed on immunized and nonimmunized pigs, all nonimmunized pigs showed typical clinical signs of swine erysipelas (fever, erysipeloid, arthritis), while all pigs immunized with 500 and 100 micrograms of P64 and live cell vaccine showed no clinical signs of this disease. In Western blot analysis, sera from pigs immunized with P64 and live cell vaccine strongly reacted with the 64 kDa protein. In contrast, the serum from nonimmunized pigs did not react with any proteins. From these results, it was suggested that a specific antibody against the 64 kDa protein could be increased in pigs immunized with P64 or live cell vaccine and that this anti-P64 antibody has a strong protective effect against E. rhusiopathiae infection in pigs.  相似文献

On 31 farms, blood samples were taken from adult dairy cattle in September 1985, when pastured, and in November-December 1985, when stabled, to assess serum pepsinogen levels and level of nematode antibody titres. Faecal samples taken in September were examined to establish the presence of parasites by means of egg counts and larval identification. During the stabling period, dry cows were either treated with ivermectin or with a placebo in alternate sequence of expected calving date. As a result, 285 cows were treated with ivermectin while 242 cows served as controls. Anthelmintic treatment resulted in a significant increase in the 305-day milk production of 205.1 kg (P less than 0.01). Fat and protein percentages were not significantly influenced by anthelmintic treatment. There was a significant between-herd variation in nematode antibody titres and in pepsinogen values. The mean herd milk-production response to treatment correlated positively with the mean herd Ostertagia antibody titre measured in September 1985 (r = 0.364, P less than 0.05).  相似文献
