A study of the safety of a vaccine against lungworm was carried out with pregnant and lactating heifers from three dairy herds with a previous history of lungworm outbreaks in adult cows. Half of the heifers were vaccinated while the other half were not. A slight temporary cough following the vaccination was only observed in one herd. No adverse effects on pregnancy or milk production were seen. All heifers were serologically and coprologically examined before the first, before and after the second immunization, 3 months after introduction to pasture and at the end of the grazing season. Serological and faecal examination of the dairy cows before introduction into pasture confirmed the presence of at least one Dictyocaulus viviparus carrier in each herd. Lungworm infection occurred in all herds during the grazing season, most prominently in the herd with the highest number of heifers. In this herd, mild coughing associated with the lungworm infection was noticed, especially in the non vaccinated heifers. No other signs or symptoms were observed. It is concluded that a vaccine against D. viviparus can be used safely in heifers, before they are introduced into the adult herd, and that this vaccine can be used as a preventive measure against lungworm outbreaks in adult cattle.  相似文献

In the West of Scotland the epidemiology of parasitic bronchitis in grazing calves was studied over a two year period with the aid of tracer calves and herbage examinations for Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae. The observations of both years emphasised the importance of overwintered lungworm larvae as a source of disease. In the first year it was shown that the ingestion and development of these overwintered larvae were, by themselves, directly responsible for severe morbidity, high faecal larval counts and deaths. In the second year it was shown that pasture ungrazed during the winter and spring and from which a hay crop was removed in mid-summer was still capable of producing clinical parasitic bronchitis in susceptible calves within three to four weeks of their introduction in later summer. In both years there was some evidence that the outbreaks appeared to be associated with the sudden availability of infective larvae on the herbage. The possibility that such larvae may have survived for many months in the soil is discussed. Despite the heavy challenge with lungworm larvae experienced by the grazing calves in the first year those vaccinated with lungworm vaccine survived, their clinical signs were mild and of short duration and their faecal larval output was greatly reduced.  相似文献

A group of 71 Friesian bullocks, aged six to nine months, vaccinated against lungworm, were randomly allocated on a liveweight basis to two groups of 40 and 31 animals. At turn-out each calf in the group of 40 calves was dosed orally with a pulsed release bolus designed to deliver five doses of oxfendazole at regular intervals during a period of up to 130 days, the first dose being released about 21 days after administration. The group treated with the bolus grazed 2.4 ha and the control group grazed 3.6 ha of permanent pasture for six weeks before having additional access to similar areas of silage aftermath. The control group was treated 99 days after turn-out and when they were housed with fenbendazole (7.5 mg/kg). Faecal worm egg counts, plasma pepsinogen activities, pasture larval counts and liveweights were recorded fortnightly. Significant reductions in worm egg counts and plasma pepsinogen activities were recorded in the calves dosed with the pulsed release bolus together with significant improvements in the liveweight of younger calves compared with control animals. Pasture larval counts were lower in the fields grazed by animals treated with the bolus.  相似文献

A five year ley pasture was used as a source of natural infection with Dictyocaulus viviparus for cattle in anthelmintic trials. Pasture larval counts, faecal larval counts of permanently grazing calves and lungworm burdens harboured by tracer calves were monitored in three grazing seasons to assess the pattern of infection. Carrier calves were introduced at the beginning of the grazing season in the first two years of the study but not in the third. In the fourth year the pasture was subdivided into two paddocks where overwintered infection with and without carrier infection were compared. A control paddock exposed to carrier infection but no overwintered infection was also monitored. Pasture larvae survived the winter but carrier infection appeared to make a larger contribution to pasture larval counts and the onset of parasitic bronchitis in susceptible calves. In the absence of grazing cattle at the end of the grazing season the concentration of D viviparus larvae on the herbage fell rapidly to undetectable levels. Discrepancies between contamination of herbage by infective D viviparus larvae and infectivity of pasture for susceptible cattle occurred in all years but were particularly marked on the third year when natural immunity appeared to influence the number of lungworms accumulating in tracer calves. Failure to recover lung worms from tracer calves cannot be regarded as an accurate indication of lungworm free pasture. In the first three years the proportion of the lungworm population which was inhibited in tracer calves was higher early and late in the grazing season and negligible in mid season. This suggests that a predisposition to inhibition in larvae which have overwintered on pasture may influence the time of onset of parasitic bronchitis in the next grazing season, but results from the fourth year did not support this hypothesis.  相似文献

Two groups of yearling cattle which had been treated with ivermectin either three and eight, or three, eight and 13 weeks after turn out to trichostrongyle contaminated pasture in their first grazing season were exposed in the following season to natural challenge with helminth parasites. To assess their immunity to this challenge each group shared a pasture with parasite naive first season calves. No anthelmintic treatments were administered at any time during the year. Throughout the grazing period the yearlings showed normal respiratory rates, negative faecal lungworm larval counts, and, relative to the calves, low faecal trichostrongyle egg counts. All the first season calves developed patent lungworm infections and on one occasion the mean respiratory rates of each group of calves were significantly greater than those of the yearling cattle. At the end of the grazing period, from early May until late September or October 1986, the cattle were removed from pasture and together with parasite naive controls challenged with either 10 or 22 third stage larvae of Dictyocaulus viviparus/kg bodyweight and necropsied between 18 and 23 days later. Although the experimental challenge resulted in relatively heavy lungworm infection of the naive controls, none of the yearlings and only three of the 11 calves which had been at pasture were found to be infected. However, large numbers of arrested fourth stage larvae of Ostertagia ostertagi were present in all the naturally infected yearlings and calves.  相似文献

A sero-epidemiological survey of Dictyocaulus viviparus infections in calves was carried out using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Infection level with D viviparus was correlated with farm, herd and management characteristics. At least 75 per cent of the herds were infected with D viviparus. Calves on zero-grazing farms were infected at a lower level than calves grazing pasture. No regional differences in infection rate were observed. On 15 per cent of the farms calves had clinical husk while 51 per cent of farms had experienced husk in the past. A higher level of infection was seen when calves were housed later in the autumn. The number of calves grazing together and the stocking rate had a significant positive influence on the level of infection. No significant difference in the occurrence of clinical husk was observed between calves vaccinated against lung-worm disease and calves not vaccinated against the disease.  相似文献

The patterns of gastrointestinal and lung helminth infections in grazing calves were studied in two small grazing experiments carried out between May and October in 1985 and 1986, respectively, at Utrecht State University. For lungworm a very rapid translation of infective larvae was seen in both experiments, resulting in a rapid build-up of the worm burdens, and in July the second generation of Dictyocaulus caused husk. After the end of patency for lungworm, in the beginning of August, a rapid decrease in pasture infectivity, measured by pasture larval counts and worm counts of tracer calves, was observed. For the gastrointestinal nematodes the translation of infective larvae was much slower as a distinct 'midsummer increase' of pasture infectivity was not seen before the end of July. The worm counts of the tracer calves and the pasture larval counts showed that these larvae remained on pasture much longer than the lungworm larvae. As in Dictyocaulus, patency stopped in August-September in Nematodirus but not in Ostertagia and Cooperia, indicating a slower rate of development of immunity in both latter genera. In contrast to lungworm, the results indicate a clear and predictable seasonal pattern for gastrointestinal helminth infections.  相似文献

Three trials were conducted in southern England involving 120 autumn-born calves to evaluate the ability of an oxfendazole pulse-release intraruminal device (OPRB) to control parasitic gastroenteritis (PGE). Matched groups were set-stocked on adjacent paddocks. One group received an OPRB at turn-out; one was treated with an alternative chemoprophylactic programme; while the third acted as an untreated control. In each trial clinical PGE occurred in the latter group but not in OPRB or alternative strategy groups. The OPRB, the morantel sustained release bolus (MSRB) and fenbendazole administered at 3 and 6 weeks after turn-out gave similar weight-gain benefits when compared with untreated controls (P less than 0.01), but the growth rate of animals given regular levamisole treatments from July to housing was significantly poorer than the matching OPRB group (P less than 0.05) although better than controls. Faecal egg-output of OPRB calves was reduced by 97.0-99.9% compared with 95.5 and 58.9% for MSRB and fenbendazole treatments. Consequently, the late summer/autumn peaks in pasture larval counts were considerably reduced in all treatment groups other than the late-season levamisole strategy which reduced overall egg-output by only 37.6%. Serum pepsinogen and gastrin values confirmed a greater degree of abomasal disturbance in calves grazing on the more highly contaminated pastures. Incidental lungworm infections became clinically apparent in the control groups of two trials but not in any OPRB or alternative treatment group.  相似文献

The extent to which oocysts of the coccidian parasite Eimeria alabamensis can survive the winter and cause clinical coccidiosis in different parts of Sweden was investigated. Fecal samples were collected between May and July 1993 from calves on 59 farms where calves had grazed the same pasture for at least 5 consecutive years. The farms were situated in 9 regions of Sweden with different climatic conditions in the winter. On each farm, 5 samples of feces were collected from the floor of the calf-house before the calves were turned out in the spring, and again from the pasture on days 4 or 5, 8 or 9 and 10 or 11 after they were turned out. Overwintering of oocysts of E. alabamensis was considered to have occurred if an increase in the excretion rate of oocysts of this species could be demonstrated 8 to 11 days after calves had been turned out to pastures that had not been grazed since the previous autumn. Oocysts were shown to have overwintered on 27 farms, representing all 9 regions. Samples from 20 (34%) of the farms representing all the climatic regions contained more than 850000 oocysts per g of feces. This was comparable with the numbers found in animals with clinical coccidiosis due to E. alabamensis. Delaying turnout until the beginning of July did not affect the infection rate of the calves. However, calves which were turned out to pastures that had been grazed by older cattle or horses, either earlier in the spring or in previous years, excreted significantly fewer oocysts than calves which were turned out to pastures that had been grazed only by calves. A questionnaire answered by 321 dairy farmers revealed that of the 298 farmers who turned their first-season grazing cattle out to traditional pastures, 179 (60%) had used the same pasture for at least 5 years. These 179 farmers had experienced a significantly higher incidence of diarrhoea in their calves during the first 2 weeks at pasture than those farmers who had used different pastures.  相似文献

In May 1985 four groups of 10 calves, aged between four and five months, were turned out on to separate, permanent pastures of equal area which had been seeded during the previous few days with larvae of Dictyocaulus viviparus. One group acted as a control, the second was vaccinated with lungworm vaccine before turnout and treated with thiabendazole three, eight and 13 weeks after turnout, while the third and fourth groups were given ivermectin three times (three, eight and 13 weeks after turnout) and twice (three and eight weeks after turnout), respectively. A severe outbreak of parasitic bronchitis resulted in the death of three control calves within five weeks of turnout and parasitic bronchitis and gastroenteritis affected the second group of calves after approximately four months at pasture. The calves given ivermectin excreted no lungworm larvae and remained free of clinical parasitism throughout the trial.  相似文献

Seventeen dairy calves, raised lungworm-free, were used in an experiment to determine whether lungworm (Dictyocaulus viviparus) larvae survived on a pasture in central Kentucky during the winter of 1979/1980. On Apr 22, 1980, the calves were placed on pasture. Three calves were put on pasture A, on which no cattle had grazed for over 20 years. Fourteen calves were put on pasture B, which had been vacant since Dec 12, 1979 (132 days before beginning of experiment), when several lungworm-infected calves had been removed from the pasture. Fecal samples from the 17 calves were examined for lungworm larvae at weekly intervals for about 6 weeks; lungworm larvae were not found in any of the 3 calves on pasture A, but were found in 12 of 14 (86%) calves on pasture B. One calf from pasture A and 3 calves from pasture B were euthanatized 37 days after being placed on pasture; lungworms were recovered from 1 calf from pasture B.  相似文献

In two grazing experiments carried out in 1982 and 1983 the prophylactic effect on gastro-intestinal helminthiasis of a single ivermectin treatment of calves 3 weeks after turnout was studied in animals which were turned out early on contaminated pasture and in calves which were turned out late on mown pasture. A single ivermectin treatment 3 weeks after early turnout did not prevent heavy helminth infections. However, such single treatment of calves 3 weeks after a late turnout on mown pasture appears to be a promising way of preventing heavy infections. Late turnout on mown pasture without anthelmintic treatment was not enough to prevent heavy infections. Ivermectin treatment was more effective against Ostertagia spp. than against Cooperia spp. There was no effect on the faecal egg output of Nematodirus helvetianus. Predominantly due to the dry summer, infections were lighter in 1983 than in 1982. These lower infections, and possibly also a delay in the onset of inhibition and differences in helminth strains, may explain the lower proportion of inhibited development in Ostertagia spp. in 1983 than in the comparable groups in 1982.  相似文献

The efficacy of the morantel sustained release bolus in controlling gastrointestinal and lungworm parasites when used in first-season grazing animals which followed older animals onto spring pasture (deprime system) was assessed in three trials conducted in Normandy, France. In each trial first-season grazing calves were equally allocated onto two separate but equivalent paddocks where they remained throughout the grazing season. A morantel sustained release bolus was administered to one group of animals at turnout, the other group remained as controls. The effect of the treatment on contamination of pasture (herbage larval counts and tracer worm counts), on faecal worm egg and lungworm larval counts, and on weight gain performance of the principal animals was assessed. In all three trials, worm egg output in the bolus-treated animals was substantially lower throughout the season compared with the control animals. Worm burdens of tracer calves grazing pastures of the treated cattle were also reduced compared with tracer calves grazing control pastures. Clinical parasitic gastroenteritis occurred in the control animals but not in the bolus-treated animals in one trial. Overall the bolus-treated animals outperformed the controls by a mean weight gain advantage of 10.5 kg (P less than 0.01).  相似文献

The titre variation of the serological examination was a further indication of the fact that the IHA detected antibodies against lungworm antigens. No indications of false positive reactions were obtained. An investigation carried out on 46 farms on the correlation between serological and clinical findings on lungworm infections revealed a positive correlation in 80% of the groups between results obtained with both methods. A study was made of the possibility of reducing lungworm infections in young grazing calves by rotational grazing for weekly periods on six paddocks. For this purpose three groups of four calves each were grazed on separate pastures in 1989, whereas a fourth group served as a permanently housed control group. Two groups of calves were infected experimentally with six doses of 10 larvae of Dictyocaulus viviparus during the first 3 weeks on pasture. In the third group, low natural infections with overwintered larvae occurred. One of the experimentally infected groups was rotationally grazed for weekly periods on six small plots while both other groups were set-stocked. Faecal larval counts and worm counts in tracer calves demonstrated lower lungworm infections in the rotationally grazed group than in both set-stocked groups. However, the numbers of worms found after challenge infection and subsequent necropsy were relatively high in the rotationally grazed group, indicating that development of immunity was less than in both other groups. Owing to the dry weather conditions in the summer of 1989, no serious clinical signs of husk developed in any of the three groups. These dry conditions, however, did not prevent the build-up of heavy pasture infectivity with gastrointestinal nematodes resulting in heavy worm burdens and serious clinical signs in tracer calves grazing for 4 days in August and September-October, respectively. This implies that rotational grazing did not have a clear effect on build-up of gastrointestinal nematode infections.  相似文献

Liveweight of calves on 86 dairy farms was measured at the end of the grazing season and related per herd to the level of exposure to nematode infection estimated in October and December. There were significant between-herd variations in all the serological infection parameters measured. On average 20.5 larvae per gram faeces (geometric mean) were found in October. Faecal samples of 20.5% of the herds contained lungworm larvae. Liveweight of calves deviated per herd from -59.8 kg to +52.2 kg from an age-adjusted population mean after their first grazing season. Growth performance was significantly related negatively to several serological and parasitological parameters. Data were fitted by means of both linear and segmented curvilinear regression. By combining infection parameters 19% of the variation in growth performance among herds could be explained. Infection parameters involved were antibody titre against Cooperia spp., egg output and lungworm larval count. It was found that antibody titres were significantly correlated positively to herd age, while pepsinogen values and egg output were negatively correlated to age. Combining supplementary feeding and anthelmintic treatment during the grazing season with the infection parameters into one model explained approximately 30% of the observed variation in growth performance among herds. It was shown that these findings were consistent with those of a similar study conducted on the same farms a year earlier, although there were clear differences between the years. Finally, significant positive relations were found between the levels of exposure to nematode parasites within farms between two consecutive years.  相似文献

The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique was applied to the detection of lungworm infections in calves. In experimentally infected animals different responses to larval and adult worm antigens were observed. The response to adult worm antigens was delayed in vaccinated animals when infection occurred by the gradual uptake of infective larvae from contaminated pasture. A serological survey in The Netherlands demonstrated a high incidence of lungworm infection in both vaccinated and unvaccinated herds. There was a good correlation between anti-adult worm and anti-larval ELISA-titres. ELISA appeared to be a useful technique for assessing the level of lungworm infection in a herd.  相似文献

The use of the biochemical and serological parameters pepsinogen, gastrin and antibodies against Cooperia, Ostertagia and Dictyocaulus in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was evaluated in diagnosing gastrointestinal parasitism and lungworm disease in seven oxfendazole pulse-release bolus (OPRB)-treated and seven non-treated first-season grazing calves.

During the grazing season, no difference in growth rate was observed and the control animals showed no clinical symptoms. The Dictyocaulus antibody levels in the controls increased from turn-out, while in the treated animals the rise was postponed until August. The Cooperia antibody titres for both groups were comparable. At the end of the grazing season, the control group showed significantly higher pepsinogen and gastrin values, and Ostertagia antibody titres.

It was concluded that these parameters are a useful tool in confirming subclinical parasitism and that preventive treatment with the OPRB in a low to moderately infected environment, together with a high plane of nutrition, provided little benefit to the farmer.  相似文献

A 3-year grazing trial (2002-2004) was conducted on a commercial beef cattle farm in south-central Sweden to assess different methods of parasite control. This paper focuses on the dynamics of the free-living larval stages, whereas data on performance and within-host parasitological variables are presented in a complementary paper. Each year in May, 4 groups of 10 first-season grazing (FSG) steers were turned out on to separate 2ha paddocks and subjected to the following strategies: (1) spring turn-out on to pasture which had been grazed the previous year by second-season grazing (SSG) steers (paddock RT), followed by a move to aftermath (paddock AM) after 10 weeks (mid-July), (2) supplementary feeding with concentrate and hay for 4 weeks following turn-out (paddock FD), set stocked, (3) untreated control (paddock UT), set stocked and (4) anthelmintic treated control (paddock DO), set stocked. All paddocks were assigned a new set of FSG cattle each year whereas the treatments remained the same. Pasture infectivity were monitored partly by two tracer calves that grazed each paddock along with the FSG calves for 3 weeks after turn-out and prior to housing, partly by analysis of herbage samples for infective larvae (L3) that were collected from each paddock at monthly intervals between April and October. The predominant genera found were Cooperia and Ostertagia. Tracers grazing paddock RT overall harboured less worms, and in particular less Ostertagia spp., and tracers grazing paddock AM in mid-July harboured insignificant numbers of nematodes compared to tracers on the FD and UT paddocks. Although total worm counts varied between groups, smaller numbers were generally observed early in the grazing-season (May), compared to close to housing (September) when inhibited early L4 larvae were almost exclusively found. Results observed from herbage samples showed high numbers of L3 in spring before the time of turn-out, compared to around housing. In conclusion, the rotation control strategy showed promising results and provided a turn-out pasture that was 'nematode safe' to FSG cattle the following spring, whereas the feeding strategy failed as applied in this experiment.  相似文献
