The genotype × environment (GE) interaction influences genotype selection and recommendations. Consequently, the objectives of genetic improvement should include obtaining genotypes with high potential yield and stability in unpredictable conditions. The GE interaction and genetic improvement for grain yield and yield stability was studied for 11 durum breeding lines, selected from Iran/ICARDA joint program, and compared to current checks (i.e., one durum modern cultivar and two durum and bread wheat landraces). The genotypes were grown in three rainfed research stations, representative of major rainfed durum wheat-growing areas, during 2005–09 cropping seasons in Iran. The additive main effect and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) analysis, genotype plus GE (GGE) biplot analysis, joint regression analysis (JRA) (b and S2di), six stability parameters derived from AMMI model, two Kang’s parameters [i.e., yield-stability (YSi) statistic and rank-sum], GGE distance (mean performance + stability evaluation), and two adaptability parameters [i.e., TOP (proportion of environments in which a genotype ranked in the top third) and percentage of adaptability (Ad)] were used to analyze GE interaction in rainfed durum multi-environment trials data. The main objectives were to (i) evaluate changes in adaptation and yield stability of the durum breeding lines compared to modern cultivar and landraces (ii) document genetic improvement in grain yield and analyze associated changes in yield stability of breeding lines compared to checks and (iii) to analyze rank correlation among GGE biplot, AMMI analysis and JRA in ranking of genotypes for yield, stability and yield-stability. The results showed that the effects due to environments, genotypes and GE interaction were significant (P < 0.01), suggesting differential responses of the genotypes and the need for stability analysis. The overall yield was 2,270 kg ha?1 for breeding lines and modern cultivar versus 2,041 kg ha?1 for landraces representing 11.2 % increase in yield. Positive genetic gains for grain yield in warm and moderate locations compared to cold location suggests continuing the evaluation of the breeding material in warm and moderate conditions. According to Spearman’s rank correlation analysis, two types of associations were found between the stability parameters: the first type included the AMMI stability parameters and joint regression parameters which were related to static stability and ranked the genotypes in similar fashion, whereas the second type consisted of the rank-sum, YSi, TOP, Ad and GGED which are related to dynamic concept of stability. Rank correlations among statistical methods for: (i) stability ranged between 0.27 and 0.97 (P < 0.01), was the least between AMMI and GGE biplot, and highest for AMMI and JRA and (ii) yield-stability varied from 0.22 (between GGE and JRA) to 0.44 (between JRA and AMMI). Breeding lines G8 (Stj3//Bcr/Lks4), G10 (Ossl-1/Stj-5) and G12 (modern cultivar) were the best genotypes in terms of both nominal yield and stability, indicating that selecting for improved yield potential may increase yield in a wide range of environments. The increase in adaptation, yield potential and stability of breeding lines has been reached due to gradual accumulation of favorable genes through targeted crosses, robust shuttle breeding and multi-locational testing.  相似文献

The unpredictability of the Mediterranean climate causes fluctuations in wheat yield and quality, but offers the opportunity for obtaining high‐quality durum wheat in terms of grain protein content. Twenty‐five durum wheat genotypes were grown under irrigated and rainfed conditions at each of two latitudes in Spain during 1998 and 1999. Differences between latitudes in grain protein content and chlorophyll content in the flag leaf were attributable to nitrogen fertilization management. Cycle length until anthesis was less affected by the environment than grain‐filling duration, and was longer under irrigated conditions than in the rainfed sites. A negative asymptotic curve was the best equation to fit the relationship between yield and protein content, suggesting that yield improvements in fertile environments may be attained with negligible reductions in protein content. ‘Jabato’, ‘Waha’, ‘Lagost‐3’, ‘Massara‐1’ and ‘Vit?on’ showed medium to high yield, yield stability and high protein content. Chlorophyll content in the flag leaf, measured at anthesis with the soil‐plant analysis development (SPAD) portable field unit, may be useful for the fast and cheap detection of durum wheat genotypes with high grain protein content in drought‐stressed Mediterranean environments.  相似文献

The components of grain yield are altered by adverse growing conditions as the effects of certain environmental factors on crop growth and yield differ depending upon the developmental stages when these conditions occur. Path-coefficient analysis was used to investigate the main processes influencing grain yield and its formation under Mediterranean conditions. Twenty-five durum wheat genotypes, consisting of four Spanish commercial varieties and 21 inbred lines from the ICARDA durum wheat breeding program, were grown during 1997 and 1998 under both rainfed and irrigated conditions in southern Spain. {P}ath-coefficient analysis revealed that under favourable conditions grain yield depended in equal proportion on the three primary yield components (i.e. spikes m−2, grains spike−1, and mean grain weight), whereas in the rainfed experiments, variations in grain yield were due mainly to spikes m−2 and to a lesser extent to grains spike−1. Compensatory effects were almost absent under irrigated treatments; however, under water shortage, spikes m−2 exerted a negative influence on grain spike−1 due mainly to a negative interrelationship between tiller production and apical development. These compensatory effects could partially explain the restricted success in durum wheat breeding observed in water-limited environments of the Mediterranean region. Under rainfed conditions the number of spikes m−2 depended mainly on the ability for tiller production, whereas in the irrigated experiments the final number of spikes was determined mostly by tiller survival.  相似文献

Summary The possibility of using proline accumulation and fluorescence inhibition as predictive tests for drought tolerance in durum wheat has been investigated. The drought susceptibility of 25 genotypes was evaluated by comparing yields and yield components in irrigated and non irrigated conditions in the field. A drought susceptibility index (DSI) was calculated based on yields from irrigated and dry treatments and compared with the results obtained using the two physiological criteria. Proline accumulation and chlorophyll fluorescence inhibition were found to be significantly and negatively correlated with DSI of grain yield, biological yield, and thousand kernel weight, and tiller index. The use of both criteria for breeding durum wheat in Mediterranean dryland is discussed.  相似文献

Drought stress and zinc (Zn) deficiency are serious abiotic stress factors limiting crop production in Turkey, especially in Central Anatolia. In this study, the effects of Zn deficiency and drought stress on grain yield of 20 wheat cultivars (16 bread wheat, Triticum aestivum; four durum wheat, Triticum durum cultivars) were investigated over 2 years under rainfed and irrigated conditions in Central Anatolia where drought and Zn deficiency cause substantial yield reductions. Plants were treated with (+Zn: 23 kg Zn ha−1, as ZnSO4·7H2O) and without (−Zn) Zn under rainfed and irrigated conditions. Both Zn deficiency and rainfed treatments resulted in substantial decreases in grain yield. Significant differences were determined between both bread wheat and durum wheat cultivars in terms of drought stress tolerance. Considering drought sensitivity indices over 2 years, the bread wheat cultivars Yayla‐305, Gerek‐79, Dagdas‐94 and Bolal‐2973 were found to be more drought‐tolerant than the other cultivars under both −Zn and +Zn treatments. Especially the durum wheat cultivars Cakmak 79 and Selcuklu 97 showed much greater drought susceptibility under Zn deficiency, and irrigation alone was not sufficient to obtain satisfying grain yield without Zn application. The results indicate that sensitivity to Zn deficiency stress became more pronounced when plants were drought‐stressed. The effect of irrigation on grain yield was maximized when Zn was adequately supplied, leading to the suggestion that efficient water use in Central Anatolia seems to be highly dependent on the Zn nutritional status of plants.  相似文献

Even in the temperate climates of Europe, increasing early season drought and rising air temperature are presenting new challenges to farmers and wheat breeders. Sixteen winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes consisting of three hybrids, six line cultivars and two breeding lines from Germany as well as five line cultivars from France, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and the Ukraine (referred to as “exotic” lines) have been included in this study. The genetic materials were evaluated over three growing seasons under a range of soil moisture regimes at the three North German sites Braunschweig (irrigated and drought‐stressed), Warmse (rainfed) and Söllingen (rainfed). The average grain yields in the twelve growth environments (water regime × season combinations) ranged from 6.1 to 13.5 t ha?1. The exotic lines showed little evidence of specific phenological adaptation to drought although they are frequently faced with water scarcity in their countries of origin. The hybrids and German lines exhibited higher regression coefficients (bi) to environmental means than the exotic lines, indicating particular adaptation to favourable growing conditions. The phenotypical correlations of grain yield between the various environments were high, ranging for instance from 0.6 to 0.8 for the irrigated and drought‐stressed environments at Braunschweig. It is thus expected that in the foreseeable future continued selection aiming at high yield potential will suffice as a means to counter the expected increase in droughts.  相似文献

Selection criteria for drought tolerance would be helpful tools for wheat breeding programmes. To assess the usefulness of some morphological traits above the flag leaf node as indicators of yield and the susceptibility index (SI) of Fischer and Maurer, 10 durum wheat genotypes were used in experiments conducted under two water regimes at two latitudes in Spain during 3 years. Morphological traits were measured at anthesis, and yield, yield components and quality traits were evaluated at ripening. Principal components analysis showed associations between morphological traits and yield, yield components and quality, most of them caused by differences between environments. Peduncle weight, spike weight and length and awn length were significantly related to SI within environments. Spike and peduncle weight were the traits more related to yield and SI in all the experiments together and in the rainfed sites, while in the irrigated sites spike length was better. The spike weight and length were negatively associated with SI, while peduncle weight was positively associated to SI. Genotype means across all experiments were associated with SI values. These morphological traits could be selection criteria in breeding programmes to obtain varieties with good yield stability. The genetic variability found suggests opportunity for selection.  相似文献

After the evaluation of numerous accessions of primitive wheats for yield components and morphophysiological traits related to drought tolerance (e.g., maintenance of high relative water content, RWC; photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence, qQ; and chlorophyll loss, chl, under moisture stress conditions), several accessions belonging to three species (Triticum dicoccum, T. polonicum, and T. carthlicum) were crossed with the improved durum wheat varieties Cham 1 and Om Rabi 5. A direct selection (F2 progeny) for yield and an indirect physiological trait were applied on interspecific T. durum x T. dicoccum, T. durum x T. polonicum, and T. durum x T. carthlicum populations. Divergent selection was applied to validate the possible use of morphophysiological traits (root parameters, RWC, photochemical quenching, proline content, and carbon isotope discrimination) in selection, and to evaluate the resulting effects on yield. Heritability and selection response of these traits has been evaluated, and the impact of divergent selection for morphological and agronomic characters was studied under field conditions. The divergent populations were evaluated under different environmental conditions in France, Syria, and Yemen. Selection for morphophysiological traits related to moisture stress, such as root parameters, RWC and carbon isotope discrimination was possible due to high h2 values and effective, resulting in high genetic gains. However, the effect of selection for these traits on yield stability needs to be further studied. Furthermore, a modified bulk method (F2 'progeny method') was developed. Direct selection for grain yield per plant in F2 was carried out and yield per line in F3 was evaluated under contrasting environmental conditions in France, Syria, and Tunisia. Results revealed that some F3 lines were higher yielding than the improved durum wheat varieties Cham 1 and Om Rabi 5 under both stressed (Aleppo) and favourable (Montpellier) environmental conditions. Lines were evaluated in preliminary yield trials at Montpellier (France), Aleppo (Syria), and Constantine (Algeria). Results indicated that the use of related species combined with the use of the modified bulk breeding method is promising not only for increasing durum wheat yield in drought prone environments, but also for improving durum wheat yield stability across contrasting environments. Results of both breeding strategies are presented, and the potential advantages of using related tetraploid species in durum wheat breeding for drought tolerance are discussed. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Drought tolerance as such is often not considered to be an independent trait by plant breeders. The objective of this study was to evaluate eight drought tolerance indices, namely stress susceptibility index (SSI), yield stability index (YSI), yield reduction ratio (Yr), yield index (YI), tolerance index (TOL), mean productivity (MP), geometric mean productivity (GMP), and stress tolerance index (STI) in upland cotton (G. hirsutum L.) genotypes. For this purpose, 16 genotypes were sampled during the 2013-2014 growing seasons under both normal and drought-stress field conditions at the Main Cotton Research Station of Navsari Agricultural University, Surat, India. The drought tolerance indices were calculated based on seed cotton yield under drought stress and non-stress conditions. Mean comparison of drought tolerance indices and seed cotton yield validated the significant influences of drought stress on yield as well as significant differences among genotypes. Results of calculated correlation coefficients and multivariate analyses showed that GMP, MP and STI indices were able to discriminate drought-sensitive and tolerant genotypes. Cluster analysis using the drought-tolerance indices divided the 16 genotypes into tolerant and susceptible groups. Two genotypes, G.Cot.16 × H-1353/10 and H-1353/10 × G.Cot.16 gave good yield response under drought conditions leading to their stability during water stress conditions. Based on multivariate analyses using the indices individually or in combinations, it was possible to identify the most yield-stable genotypes across the environments. Overall, we concluded that GMP, MP and STI indices can be efficiently exploited not only for screening drought tolerance but also to identify superior genotypessuitable for both stress and non-stress field conditions.  相似文献

The relationship between grain yield and carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) was analysed in wheat grown under different water regimes in the Ningxia Province (north‐west of China). When the association was significant, the relationships between grain yield, Δ and other drought tolerance related traits, such as leaf ash content (ma), chlorophyll concentration (Chl), relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance (gS) and the ratio of internal CO2 leaf concentration to ambient CO2 concentration (Ci/Ca), were also examined. Using correlation analysis, the relationships were determined during two consecutive years in a set of 20 spring wheat cultivars (landraces, improved varieties and advanced lines) under rainfed and irrigated conditions, including saline conditions. The relationship between Δ and yield within environments highly depended on the quantity of water stored in the soil at sowing, the quantity and distribution of rainfall during the growth cycle, and the irrigation before anthesis. Δ predicted grain yield under limited irrigation (post‐anthesis water stress) but not under pre‐anthesis water stress (rainfed conditions), fully irrigated and saline conditions. Under limited irrigation, grain Δ correlated significantly to grain yield leaf ma at heading and maturity. It also significantly positively correlated to Chl, RWC, gS and Ci/Ca assessed at anthesis. A precise characterization of the timing and intensity of the abiotic constraints experienced by the crop is consequently needed before implementing the use of Δ in wheat breeding programmes.  相似文献

Drought strongly influences potato (Solanum tuberosum) production and quality. Potato being a drought susceptible crop, the development of varieties with enhanced tolerance to water stress could highly improve productivity in drought prone areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of several yield based indices to be used in large scale screening for drought tolerance. The experiment included improved varieties, genetic stocks and landraces potatoes grown under drought and irrigated conditions. A group of accessions with high yield under both conditions was identified. Mean productivity (MP), geometric mean productivity (GMP), tolerance (TOL), drought tolerance index (DTI), drought susceptible index (DSI) and yield stability index (YSI) were calculated from tuber yield under drought and irrigated conditions. The relationships between these indices and yield were analyzed. The Fleiss’ Kappa concordance test was used to analyze the correspondence between accessions previously identified as highly productive under both drought and irrigated conditions and accessions with optimal values for the different indices. MP, GMP and DTI allowed identifying genotypes combining high yield potential and high yield under drought within the three subsets of genotypes. Conversely, DSI, YSI and TOL showed low and variable concordance values across subsets, suggesting that their efficiency in screening genotypes highly depends on the nature of the tested genetic material.  相似文献

Summary Near-isogenic tall (no dwarfing gene), semidwarf (Rht1 or Rht2) and dwarf (Rht1 + Rht2 or Rht3) spring wheat lines were evaluated for yield and yield components under irrigated and rainfed conditions. Under irrigated conditions, the dwarf and the semidwarf lines exhibited a significant yield advantage over the tall lines. Under rainfed conditions, the semidwarf lines outyielded the tall as well as the dwarf lines. Percent yield reduction in response to drought stress was highest with the dwarfs and lowest with the tall lines. Dry matter production of the tall lines and that of the semidwarf lines did not differ significantly and both produced significantly more dry matter than the dwarf lines under irrigated as well as rainfed conditions. Plant height and kernel weight decreased with increasing degree of dwarfness while number of kernels per spikelet, harvest index and days to heading increased under both moisture regimes. The dwarfing genes did not have any significant influence on number of tillers/m2 and spikelets per spike in either moisture regime.  相似文献

Five barley (Hordeum rulgare L.), five durum wheat (Triticum turgidum concar. durum L.) and one wild emmer wheat (Triticum turgidum conrar dicoccoides) genotypes from different origins and differing for drought tolerance and potential yield, were studied for their osmotic adjustment capacity at the same stage and under similar water stress conditions. Differences for water status parameters between barley and tetraploid wheat genotypes were noted and discussed. The lowest osmotic adjustment capacities were noted in drought susceptible varieties, while a high capacity was found in genotypes exhibiting a high yield stability across contrasting environments. Relative water content, leaf osmotic potential and accumulation of soluble sugars were found to be highly related with osmotic adjustment: they could be used as criteria for a rapid evaluation of osmotic adjustment in segregating populations.  相似文献

Carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) has been proposed as a selection criterion for transpiration efficiency and grain yield in drought‐prone environments for several C3 species, including cereals. Δ analysis, however, has mainly been concerned with grain or culm tissues and little work has been devoted to other organs. The objective of this study was to describe Δ variation in different organs and to examine the relationships between Δ and grain yield across environments. Six durum wheat genotypes with contrasted grain Δ were cultivated under rainfed conditions during three successive years at Montpellier (South of France). Δ was measured on flag leaf, stalk, awns, chaff and rachis sampled at anthesis and maturity, and on mature grain. Higher genotypic variation and closer correlation with yield were noted for grain Δ compared to other plant parts. The genotype ranking across years was more consistent for grain Δ than for other organs. Consequently, the grain seems the most effective plant part for Δ analysis in durum wheat under Mediterranean conditions. The study of Δ variation in other organs may be useful, however, to evaluate the contribution of those organs to grain filling and final yield according to environmental conditions.  相似文献

The genetic gain of oats in Italy over the past 40 years was evaluated using 14 cultivars belonging to three different groups: (i) five cultivars derived from local populations at the beginning of the oat breeding in Italy; (ii) four foreign cultivars, introduced in Italy in the 1980s; (iii) five modern cultivars, selected through specific breeding programmes. The genotypes were tested for 2 years in three locations characterised by different climatic conditions and agricultural practices; furthermore in one location in Southern Italy, irrigated and rainfed plots were compared. Genetic gain was estimated equal to 3.6 g m−2 y−1 based on eight environments. The performance of the most recent cultivars was high under both irrigated and rainfed conditions, showing a good adaptation of these genotypes to both fertile and drought prone environments. Finally, yield increase in oats was found to be negatively correlated with plant height and positively correlated with test weight and seed weight.  相似文献

In a 2-years experiment, 30 wheat cultivars and 21 landraces from different countries were tested under near optimum and drought stress conditions. Plant height, number of sterile spikelets per spike, spikelets per spike, number of kernels per spike, kernel weight per spike, 1000 kernel weight and grain yield were evaluated. The number of kernels per spike, 1000 kernel weight and especially yield were more sensitive to drought stress in the cultivars than plant height and number of spikelets per spike, while in the landraces these traits did not differ under drought stress compared to near optimum conditions. The average yield of cultivars was significantly better than the average yield of landraces under near optimum as well as drought stress conditions. Path coefficient analysis showed that for cultivars under near optimum conditions there was no significant direct association of any of the analysed characters with yield, while under drought stress conditions, number of kernels per spike had a significant positive direct effect. Under drought stress conditions, the number of sterile spikelets displayed a negative direct effect, while kernel weight per spike had a positive direct effect on yield. Hierarchical cluster analysis was used as a tool to classify cultivars and landraces according to their yield ability under near optimum and drought stress conditions. Among the cultivars, two groups out of five and among one of three in the landraces were characterised by high yields in both near optimum as well as under drought stress conditions. These genotypes may serve as sources of germplasm for breeding for drought tolerance. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Moisture stress is the major constraint to rice production and its stability in rainfed, mainly irrigated, and aerobic environments. Identification of genomic regions conferring tolerance to stress would improve our understanding of the genetics of stress response and result in the development of drought tolerant cultivars. In the present study, quantitative trait loci for drought response related traits and as well as grain yield were identified using a set of 140 recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross between the popular high-yielding variety, IR64 and the landrace, INRC10192. A total of 36 QTL were identified for grain yield and its components under control and stress conditions. Strikingly, a QTL cluster flanked by the markers RM38 and RM331 on chromosome 8 was found to be associated with grain yield, plant height, no. of productive tillers, chaffy grains, and spikelet fertility on secondary rachis and biomass under stress treatment. The genomic regions associated with these QTL under drought stress will be useful for the development of marker-based breeding for drought tolerant, high-yielding varieties suited to drought-prone areas.  相似文献

Summary The evaluation aimed at identifying landrace genotypes adapted to the rather unfavourable growing conditions of durum wheat in Sicily, to be used as parental material in a breeding programme. The trial was carried out in three seasons experiencing varying climatic conditions, and included 75 landraces, 25 of which were selected under severe drought in Syria. Wide differences were observed for most traits among genotypes and seasons of evaluation. Yields of the best performing entries identified in each season never significantly differed from that of the best check variety. The top-yielding landraces were consistently better than the remaining entries for the three yield components, viz. number of spikes per plant, number of kernels per spike and mean kernel weight. In the driest season they were also significantly earlier in heading, confirming the importance of earliness under drought. An analytical breeding approach relying on an array of morpho-physiological traits as selection criteria did not seem appropriate for the given environment, as the variable stress level enhanced the importance of specific traits under specific situations. The genotypic response was largely season-specific. Nonetheless, five landraces were in the best group in all seasons. The selection made in Syria also appeared somewhat effective in Sicily, particularly in the less favourable seasons.  相似文献

CIMMYT's approach to breed for drought tolerance   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary About 32% of the 99 million ha wheat grown in developing countries experiences varying levels of drought stress. Three major drought types have been identified: Late drought (LD) is common in the Mediterranean region, early drought (ED) is found in Latin America and wheat is produced on residual soil moisture (RM) in the Indian subcontinent and part of Australia. Until 1983, CIMMYT selected all germplasm under near optimum conditions for its yield potential and tested only advanced lines under drought. In spite of many critics, this approach proved to be successful, since in the mid 80's CIMMYT germplasm was grown on 45% of the wheat area in LC with annual rainfall from 300–500 mm and on 21% in areas with less than 300 mm. Since 1983, CIMMYT's drought breeding methodology is to alternate segregating populations between drought stressed and fully irrigated conditions (FI) and to test advanced lines under a line source irrigation system. To compare the efficiency of these approach, yield of four, mostly leading varieties, from each of the regions with LD, ED, RM, and FI and twelve recent CIMMYT cultivars selected for high yield under FI and RM conditions (ALT) were compared under four different moisture regimes (FI, LD, ED, and RM) in 89–90 and 90–91 in Yaqui Valley, Mexico. Genotypic correlation between yield and days to flowering, days to maturity, height, grains m-2, TKW, test weight and grain fill period were calculated.Mean grain yield of the four best lines in the ALT group was highest under all moisture stress regimes, followed by the FI-group. However, the highest yielding cultivar within each moisture regime was from the FI-group under FI, from the LD-group under LD, and from the ALT-group under ED and RM conditions. Estimates for genetic advance suggest that FI is the best environment for increasing grain yield even in all three drought environments. This indicates that yield potential per se is beneficial also in drought environments. The highest yield in drought environments was realized by the CIM cultivars selected under FI and RM. Simultaneous evaluation of the germplasm under near optimum conditions, to utilize high heritabilities and identify lines with high yield potential, and under stress conditions to preserve alleles for drought tolerance seem at present the best strategy.  相似文献

Three durum and three bread wheat genotypes were crossed to produce three tetraploid, three hexaploid and nine interspecific (pentaploid) F1 hybrids. All genotypes were evaluated for heat tolerance in the field and for drought using polyethylene glycol in vitro. Chromosome numbers and meiotic behavior in pentaploid F1 hybrids (2n=5x=35, genomes AABBD) were confirmed. Heat stress significantly reduced grain yield/plant and 1000-kernel weight (1000-KW), while grain protein content (GPC) was increased. Drought caused a significant reduction in root length, shoot length and seedling fresh weight, whereas root/shoot ratio was increased. P3 (durum), P4 (bread) and their pentaploid F1 hybrid could be considered as the most heat-tolerant genotypes. However, P2 (durum), P6 (bread) and their F1 were most tolerant to drought. The addition of a D genome single dose into pentaploid F1 hybrids obviously reduced grain yield/plant, 1000-KW and seedling traits, however GPC was increased. Moderate to high broad-sense heritability and genetic advance were obtained for the most investigated traits. Grain yield/plant was strongly positively correlated with stress tolerance index (STI), yield index (YI), mean productivity (MP), geometric mean productivity (GMP) and harmonic mean (HM) under heat stress and with root length under drought condition, suggesting that STI, YI, MP, GMP and HM are powerful indices for heat tolerance, while root length is most effective for drought. Successful interspecific hybridization obtained in the study is only an initial step for desired genes introgression. Successive progenies are going to be evaluated for further genetic studies aiming at improving abiotic stress tolerance in wheat.  相似文献
