Several experiments were performed in spring summer over the period 1982–85 to study the relationships between digestibility of energy (DE), gross energy intake (GEI), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and dry matter (DM) content in pasture.
Wether sheep in metabolism pens and fed ad libitum with daily-cut fresh pasture were used. Two plots with different botanical composition were used to provide herbage; one dominated by Lolium perenne and the other by Holcus lanatus. A high correlation ( r = -0·91) was observed between DE and ADF. The prediction used a second-order degree polynomial.
Gross energy intake and digestibility of energy were scarcely correlated ( r = 0·50) when all cases as a whole were considered. Higher correlations between GEI and DE ( r = 0·69) were obtained when only data from pastures where Holcus lanatus prevailed were considered, and still higher ( r = 0·91) in those pastures dominated by sown species with DE values lower than 70%.
Herbage DM content had a large effect on GEI( r = 0·83) in the pastures dominated by perennial ryegrass with DE higher than 70%, the correlation between DE and GEI being low and negative ( r =-0·36). It is possible, therefore, to predict apparent digestibility of pasture energy from ADF. However, DE is closely related to GEI only in those pastures in which DE is lower than 70%, DM content being an important factor limiting the intake of those fresh pastures dominated by Perennial ryegrass when DE is above 70%.  相似文献

There is a lack of information on the effects of companion species in grass–legume mixtures on herbage yield and quality changes during prolonged growth. Such information is relevant for harvest planning and estimation of consequences for feeding value of conserved feed when harvesting is delayed. Perennial ryegrass was sown with each of four legumes: red clover, white clover, lucerne and birdsfoot trefoil, and white clover was sown with hybrid ryegrass, meadow fescue and timothy. Effects of species composition on herbage yield, contents of N, neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and lignin, ash and in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) were studied in entire herbage and in component species during 2 years in a small‐plot cutting trial in Denmark. In May and August, the dynamic development of components of feed value and their interrelationships were investigated by sampling at optimum harvest date (i.e., normal practice) ± 1 week (t = ?1 to t = +1). Herbage digestibility and contents of N and ash decreased while those of fibre compounds increased during the 2 weeks from t = ?1 to t = 1 in all species. In May, contents of ADF and lignin increased at a faster rate in legumes than in grasses; in August, NDF and ADF increased most quickly in legumes. Generally, N contents and IVOMD declined at similar rates in grasses and legumes, but, within each group, differences in yield and quality development occurred among species. The relationship between weekly growth rate and change in quality parameters differed among species and functional groups, i.e., grasses and legumes. Results are discussed in the context of quantifying the impact of delaying the harvest date of grass–legume mixtures and relationships between productivity and components of feed quality.  相似文献

First and second harvests of lucerne (Medicago sativa L.), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and a lucerne–perennial ryegrass mixture [80 or 144 g kg?1 dry matter (DM) of ryegrass] at the first and second harvests were cut and conditioned, wilted to 500 or 700 g DM kg?1 then baled and stretch‐wrapped for silage on the same dates. Lucerne bales were denser (411 kg m?3) than bales of perennial ryegrass (331 kg m?3) (P < 0·05). After an 8‐month storage period, silage made from high DM‐content forage had a higher concentration of neutral‐detergent fibre (NDF) and was less digestible than that made from low DM‐content forage. Daily DM intakes by beef steers, when the silages of the second harvest were fed ad libitum, were 31·2, 31·2 and 22·3 g kg?1 live weight for lucerne, lucerne–perennial ryegrass mixture and perennial ryegrass silages, respectively (P < 0·01), when the herbage had been wilted to 500 g kg?1. In vivo digestibility of NDF in the lucerne–perennial ryegrass mixture silage (0·587) was significantly lower than that of perennial ryegrass silage (0·763) but higher than lucerne silage (0·518). Higher intakes of baled lucerne silage tended to offset its lower digestibility values. Lucerne–perennial ryegrass mixture silage had a higher DM and NDF digestibility than lucerne silage, indicating perhaps the presence of associative effects.  相似文献

Leafy strains of five grasses were grown for seed and subjected to various cattle grazing treatments between October and April for three harvest years. The grasses were: S.143 cocksfoot, S.215 meadow fescue, S.170 tall fescue, S.59 red fescue and S.23 perennial ryegrass. All but S.59 red fescue (row crop) were studied as row and broadcast crops. The plots were sown under an arable silage crop and received top dressings of nitrogenous fertiliser every year. Yield of seed, and also quantity of herbage in winter, were measured.
October grazing in the seeding year reduced the first crop of seed in all species except ryegrass. Grazing in December improved the yield of meadow fescue throughout the experiment, and of cocksfoot, tall fescue and red fescue after the first year. Several factors might operate to bring about this effect; suggestions are made for further investigation. Repeated grazing from December to March tended to reduce vigour, and so to offset the advantage of removing autumn-grown herbage. Grazing at intervals from December to late April seriously reduced yield in all species. Tall fescue and red fescue, early flowering species, were most seriously affected, meadow fescue and perennial ryegrass least. Cocksfoot and tall fescue yielded more seed when grown in 2-ft. rows than when broadcast. Meadow fescue and perennial ryegrass did not. The yield of meadow fescue was less affected by adverse conditions than cocksfoot.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to measure the voluntary intake and digestibility of (a) primary growth and (b) regrowth of diploid (S22) and tetraploid (Tetila tetrone) varieties of Italian rye-grass (Lolium muitifiorum): Sl00 white clover (Trifolium repens) was included as an additional treatment in the second experiment with the re-growth herbage diets. Mature adult wether sheep, housed indoors in digesdhility crates, were fed individually on fresh herbage cut daily from late April to early June (primary growth) and in early Septemher (regrowth). The yield, digestihility, nitrogen and soluble–carhohydrate contents of the two ryegrass varieties were similar during the primary growth stage. Intake-digestibility relationships for the graces were positive, linear and different (P=0.05). The voluntary intake of diploid ryegrass was approximately 14% higher than that of tetraploid ryegrass of the same digestibility. With regrowth herbage the digestibility and voluntary intake of white clover was higher than both the Italian ryegrasses. The digestihility of the regrowth tetraploid was 6% units higher than the diploid variety, but there was no difference in the voluntary intake of digestible organic matter between the varieties at the regrowth stage. The intake of regrowth herbage was higher thaa that of primary growth herhage of similar digestihility.  相似文献

This paper describes the rate of growth of Italian ryegrass in the spring, measured by recording DM yield at weekly intervals up to 10 weeks. There were 3 levels of applied N: 25, 75 aud 125 lhJac (28, S4 and 140 kgJha). Rate of growth declined after the sixth week at all 3 levels of N. Grass receiving 25 Ib N produced 5000 Ib DMJac (5600 kgJha) in 10 weeks, that receiving 75 lb N 6800 Ib (7700 kgJha) and that receiving 125 lb N 7100 lb (8000 kgJha). The DM content of herbage fell after the first week and subsequently increased steadily up to 10 weeks; the fall was least marked and the rate of increase most rapid at tbe lowest level of N. In vitro digestibility (measured in one year only) was much affected by stage of growth and little affected by level of N.  相似文献

The production performance of herbage‐fed animals is affected by herbage voluntary dry‐matter intake (VDMI) and organic matter digestibility. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of herbage mass (HM) on in vivo herbage voluntary intake and digestibility in sheep. The three HM treatments were as follows: 1,100 kg dry matter (DM)/ha (low, L), 2,300 kg DM/ha (medium, M) and 3,700 kg DM/ha (high, H). The study was a Latin square design, repeated on two occasions in 2012: 24 May to 20 July (summer) and 21 July to 5 October (autumn). Twelve Texel wether sheep (individually housed) were offered fresh cut perennial ryegrass herbage for ad libitum consumption. Using the total faecal collection method, the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre was determined. In summer, L had a similar VDMI to M and both had a higher VDMI than H. In autumn, L had a higher VDMI than both M and H. For dry‐matter digestibility and organic matter digestibility, there was no significant difference between L and M, which were both higher than H. For every 1% increase in neutral detergent fibre digestibility, VDMI increased by 0.03 kg. In the zero‐grazing scenario examined, offering low (1,100 kg DM/ha) HM swards enabled animals to achieve high intakes of highly digestible herbage, which should ensure high animal production performance.  相似文献

The selection and feeding of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) varieties (PRV) or perennial grass species (PGS) may affect enteric methane (CH4) output because of changes in the fermentation dynamics in the rumen as a result of differences in herbage chemical composition. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of PRV and PGS harvested throughout the growing season on herbage chemical composition, and in vitro rumen fermentation variables and CH4 output per unit of feed using a batch culture technique. Seven PRV (Experiment 1: Alto, Arrow, Bealey, Dunluce, Greengold, Malone, Tyrella) and six perennial grasses [Experiment 2: perennial ryegrass (Navan), perennial ryegrass (Portstewart), cocksfoot, meadow fescue, tall fescue, timothy; defined as PGS], managed under a simulated grazing regime, were incubated for 24 h with buffered rumen fluid in two separate experiments. The CH4 output per unit of feed dry‐matter (DM) incubated was not affected (P > 0·05) by PRV (range of mean values across PRV of 23·9–25·3 (SEM 0·41) mL g?1 DM) or by PGS (25·6–26·6 (SEM 0·37) mL g?1 DM). The CH4 output per unit feed DM disappearing during the in vitro rumen incubation was not affected by PRV (33·9–35·1 (SEM 0·70) mL g?1 DM), and although there was an overall PGS effect (P < 0·05; 37·2–40·3 (SEM 0·71) mL g?1 DM), none of the paired contrasts between PGS were significant when analysed using Tukey adjusted comparisons. This outcome reflected either small‐scale or a lack of treatment effects on individual herbage chemical composition (e.g. 454–483 g NDF kg?1 DM, 215–224 g CP kg?1 DM and 94–122 g water‐soluble carbohydrate (WSC) kg?1 DM across PRV; 452–506 g NDF kg?1 DM, 208–243 g CP kg?1 DM and 73–131 g WSC kg?1 DM across PGS) and in vitro rumen fermentation variables. Hence, these results provide no encouragement that choices among the grasses examined, produced within the management regimes operated, would reduce enteric CH4 output per unit of feed in vivo. However, the technique utilized did not take account of animal × PRV or PGS interactions, such as potential differences in intake between animals, that may occur under farm conditions.  相似文献

Pure swards of S22 Italian ryegrass, H.1 hybrid ryegrass, S170 tall fescue, S48 timothy, S215 meadow fescue and Germinal cocksfoot were each harvested at several stages of maturity during first growth in the spring, and in the subsequent regrowths. Each batch of herbage was fed to sheep in a digestion trial under conditions of voluntary intake. Results from the first growth herbages showed the expected fall in digestibility with increasing maturity. However, the digestibility of S22, H.1, S170 and S48 began to fall well before ear emergence, whereas the digestibility of Germinal fell only slowly up to the time of ear emergence, as had been found previously with S24 and S23 ryegrass and S37 cocksfoot. The rate of fall of digestibility in H.1 and S48 (0.4 units/day) also appeared to be lower than with the perennial ryegrasses and cocksfoot (0.5 units/day). The monthly regrowths within each herbage were of similar digestibility, but the mean digestibility of regrowths differed between herbages, being highest for S215 and lowest for Germinal and S170. The grasses with highest digestibility in the early Spring, in particular S22 ryegrass, were not, however, always the most digestible in the subsequent regrowths. The numbers of sheep fed on each herbage were insufficient to show whether there were significant differences in voluntary intake between different herbage species of the same digestibility. It is suggested that an intake/digestibility relationship, based on data from more animals, should be developed for each herbage species. Only if different relationships are found can it be concluded that factors other than level of digestibility have an effect on intake.  相似文献

Scenarios of global climate change forecast an increase in air temperature of 3°C over the next 100 years in eastern Canada. Growth and nutritive value of cool‐season grasses are known to be affected by air temperature. It is also believed that grasses grown at high latitude have a greater nutritive value. The objectives of this study were to assess the effect of four combinations of day/night temperature and photoperiod (15 h–17/5°C; 15 h–22/10°C; 15 h–28/15°C; and 17 h‐17/5°C) on dry‐matter (DM) yield, in vitro true DM digestibility (IVTD), in vitro digestibility of neutral‐detergent fibre (NDF), and concentrations of NDF, acid‐detergent fibre (ADF), lignin, minerals and non‐structural carbohydrates (NSC) in timothy grown under controlled conditions. Furthermore, herbage was harvested in the morning and in the afternoon to assess the impact of the time of harvest. The dietary cation–anion difference [DCAD = (K+ + Na+) ? (Cl? + 0·6 S2?)] and the grass tetany index [GT index = K+/(Ca2+ + Mg2+)] were also calculated. Higher temperature regimes significantly decreased IVTD and digestibility of NDF but had a limited effect on concentrations of NDF, ADF and lignin. DM yield of herbage was less and the concentration of NSC was greater in timothy grown under a temperature regime of 28/15°C than the 17/5°C and 22/10°C regimes; this effect is mainly explained by a response to temperature stress. Values of DCAD and the GT index of herbage were also lower under the 28/15°C than the 17/5°C and 22/10°C regimes as a result of a decreased plant K concentration. Under the 17/5°C regime, an increase in 2 h of photoperiod resulted in increased DM yield, decreased concentrations of K, Ca, Mg, Cl and N, and an increased starch concentration; IVTD or digestibility of NDF were not affected, although lignin concentration was reduced. Harvesting timothy in the afternoon rather than in the morning resulted in higher NSC, mainly sucrose, concentrations, and decreased ADF and NDF concentrations. The forecasted increase in air temperature in eastern Canada over the next 100 years will result in lower yields and nutritive value of timothy.  相似文献

Monocultures of thirteen perennial C3 grass species that co‐occur in temperate semi‐natural grassland communities in Europe were compared in a factorial field design of two levels of N supply and two levels of cutting frequency. Above‐ground yield of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) concentration and pepsin‐cellulase DM digestibility of herbage were measured in two successive years. Species was the largest source of variability in yield of DM and DM digestibility of herbage, while CP concentration of herbage responded more to management factors. The highest mean DM yields and values of DM digestibility of herbage were achieved in spring for Festuca arundinacea and in autumn for Phleum pratense. Poa trivialis and Festuca rubra had the lowest DM yield and DM digestibility values, respectively, regardless of seasons and treatments. For all species CP concentration in herbage increased in response to an increase in cutting frequency and N supply by an average of 46 and 34 g kg?1 DM respectively. Differences between years and seasons indicated the importance of plant phenology on nutritional variables and the influence of environmental factors on species performance. Species ranking was compared according to their annual digestible DM and CP yields. The results show that some grasses have a nutritive value which is comparable to that of forages selected for high yields.  相似文献

The palatability of twelve grasses to horses was assessed by measuring the height of grass before and after grazing. The grasses were grazed on seven occasions between September 1974 and November 1975 by ponies, Thoroughbreds and hunters. There were significant differences (P < 0.001) between the palatahHity of the grasses, the most palatable being creeping red fescue (Festuea rubra) and tall fescue (Festuea arundinacea). The least palatable grasses were perennial ryegrass(Loliumperenne) and Meadow foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis). There was some evidence that the amount of grass consumed was negatively correlated with the calcium concentration in the herbage.  相似文献

There is a growing interest in the use of deficit irrigation and perennial pasture species other than perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) in temperate agriculture, in response to the decreasing availability of irrigation water. Deficit irrigation requires an understanding of plant responses to drought stress to ensure maximum dry‐matter return on water applied. A glasshouse study was undertaken to investigate some of the morphological and physiological responses of perennial ryegrass, cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.; syn. Schedonorus phoenix Scop.) to varied moisture availability. One water treatment involved frequent applications of water to maintain a soil water potential of approximately ?10 kPa (100% treatment), and three other treatments involved applications at the same frequency, but using 33, 66 or 133% of the water applied in the 100% treatment. The water treatments continued over two plant regrowth cycles, followed by a ‘recovery’ phase of a single regrowth cycle during which all plants received the same water allocation as the 100% treatment. Depletion and replenishment of stubble water‐soluble carbohydrate (WSC) differed between the three species in response to soil moisture availability. By the second regrowth cycle, stubble WSC concentration and content in moisture‐stressed cocksfoot plants had increased, followed by a decrease during the subsequent recovery phase when the stored WSC reserves were utilized to support regrowth. The changes in stubble WSC reserves corresponded to the maintenance of relatively stable (i.e. the smallest reduction in leaf DM in response to moisture stress), but consistently lower DM production for cocksfoot compared with the other species. In contrast, moisture stress had no effect on the stubble WSC reserves of perennial ryegrass and tall fescue, with the exception of a significant decrease in WSC concentration under the 33% water treatment for perennial ryegrass. Perennial ryegrass achieved an intermediate DM yield and maintained positive growth rates throughout the study, even when watered at 33% of the requirement for optimal soil moisture levels. However, a more pronounced reduction in leaf DM in plants under moisture stress compared with the other species, combined with declining WSC reserves and the death of daughter tillers, highlighted the vulnerability of perennial ryegrass to poor persistence under prolonged drought conditions. Tall fescue appeared to have the greatest scope under moisture stress in terms of maintaining productivity and displaying attributes that contribute to persistence. Its leaf DM was consistently greater than that of the other species, displaying a smaller decline in growth under water stress compared to perennial ryegrass and an ability to recover faster upon re‐watering. This study has expanded the information available that compares and defines the potential of each species under moisture stress and emphasizes the importance of balancing short‐term DM production with long‐term persistence in choice of pasture species.  相似文献

In North Vietnam, during winter, shortage of herbage constrains the profitability of dairy farming. The first objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of alternative temperate (C3) forage species, namely common oat ( Avena sativa L.), lop-sided oat ( Avena strigosa Schreb.), Italian ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum L.) and a commercial forage mixture (Avex), to address the shortage of herbage during winter in the mountain regions of North Vietnam. The second objective was to measure the effects of cultural practices (sowing rate, harvest interval and irrigation level) on yield of dry matter (DM), chemical composition, digestibility of DM and metabolizable energy (ME) concentration of herbage from the best adapted C3 species previously tested (lop-sided oat). Four experiments were conducted. Oat species proved to be the best adapted species and produced the highest annual yield of herbage (7600 kg DM ha−1) with a high nutritive value. Yields of DM of lop-sided oat were not affected by sowing rate of seed but increased as the length of harvest intervals increased from 30 to 45 and 60 d ( P  <   0·001). Crude protein concentration, digestibility of DM and ME concentration decreased as the harvest interval increased ( P  <   0·01). Irrigation increased the yields of DM of lop-sided oats by 1·3 ( P  <   0·05) but had no effect on the nutritive value of herbage. It is concluded that both common oat and lop-sided oat are suitable species to provide herbage in the winter for the mountain regions of North Vietnam.  相似文献

There is limited information on the effects of the increase in the density of shrubs on herbage production and nutritive value of natural grasslands in the Mediterranean region, currently facing major land use changes. Herbage production of drymatter (herbaceous fractions, of plant functional groups and by species), crude protein (CP), neutral‐detergent fibre (NDF), acid‐detergent fibre (ADF), acid‐detergent lignin (ADL) and hemicellulose concentrations and in vitro organic matter digestibility were determined at the time of peak of annual growth across four types of grassland vegetation each characterized by different shrub cover regimes. A sharp reduction in herbage production and a reduction in nutritive value were found as a result of the increase in shrub cover. These changes appeared to be closely related to the shift in plant functional groups detected as shrub density increased. Herbage production from grasses and legumes was found to be more sensitive to shrub cover changes than herbage production from forbs, whereas, as grassland types became denser, annual species were gradually replaced by perennials and C4 grasses by C3 ones. The impact of shrub encroachment on Mediterranean grasslands is discussed in relation to their use by livestock.  相似文献

A factorial experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of level of nitrogen (N) application to grassland and subsequent treatment of the herbage at ensiling with formic acid on the rate of silage fermentation, dry-matter (DM) recovery, aerobic stability and effluent production. Herbage from the primary regrowth of predominantly perennial ryegrass swards received either 72 (LN), 126 (MN) or 180 (HN) kg N ha?1. The herbages were harvested and yield estimated after a 50-day regrowth interval. After storage for 24 h in polythene bags, the herbages were ensiled, unwilled, in laboratory silos (6 kg capacity) either untreated (UT) or treated with formic acid (F) at 3 ml (kg herbage)?1. Three silos per treatment were opened and sampled on days 1, 3, 6, 15, 50 and 105 after ensiling. The mean herbage yields for the LN, MN and HN swards were 5.2, 6.3 and 6.2 (s.e. = 0.27) t DM ha?1 and there was no carryover effect of nitrogen treatment on the yield of a subsequent 22-day regrowth harvested on 2 September. As level of fertilizer N application increased, concentrations in the herbage at mowing of crude protein, nitrate and ash increased, DM decreased and water-soluble carbohydrate and in vitro DM digestibility remained unchanged. Increasing the rate of N fertilizer to the sward resulted in higher silage pH (P< 0.001) and ammonia N concentrations (P <0.001) at each time of sampling. Increasing the rate of fertilizer N increased effluent output (P < 0.001) and DM recovery (P < 0.001). Aerobic stability was improved (P <0.001) by use of high rates of N fertilizer application. Formic acid treatment restricted fermentation and increased effluent output (P <0.001) but had no effect (P > 0.05) on DM recovery. It is concluded that the rate and extent of pH decline was reduced with increasing N application, associated with increased buffering capacity and decreased DM concentrations of the herbage at ensiling. However, increasing the level of N fertilizer applied increased DM recovery and effluent output, and improved aerobic stability of the resulting silages.  相似文献

Excellent winter hardiness, persistence and nutritive value of both kura clover (Trifolium ambiguum M. Bieb.) and reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) suggest that intercropping these species could substitute for lucerne (Medicago sativa L.). The dry matter (DM) yield and nutritive value of herbage, and silage characteristics of kura clover‐reed canarygrass (KC‐RCG) herbage, were compared to those of lucerne over two growth cycles near Arlington, WI, USA. First and second growths of lucerne and KC‐RCG herbage were sampled four times at 1‐week intervals and ensiled for 100 d. Yield of DM of the KC‐RCG was 0·23–0·57 greater than that of lucerne on sampling dates in the first growth cycle, with no differences in DM yield in the second growth cycle. The pH of lucerne silage was lower than that of KC‐RCG silage in the first growth, and the opposite occurred in second growth, which was attributed to maturity differences and the proportion of kura clover in the mixture. Lactate concentration was lower in KC‐RCG than lucerne silages in both growth cycles. The lucerne and KC‐RCG silages had similar in vitro DM digestibility except for the final sampling date in the first growth cycle when neutral‐detergent fibre concentration of KC‐RCG herbage exceeded 550 g kg?1 DM. Crude protein concentration was greater in lucerne silage than in KC‐RCG silage in both growth cycles. Overall, differences in nutritive value and silage fermentation between the two herbages were minimal across growth cycles. These results suggest that a KC‐RCG sward is a viable alternative to lucerne in northern environments of the USA where lucerne production may be limited by winter injury or edaphic factors.  相似文献

Nitrogen fertilization affect growth and yield of timothy (Phleum Pratense L.), but there are conflicting report on its effect on nutritive value. Two experiments were conducted to describe changes in nutritive value of field-grown timothy fertilized with four rates of N fertilizer during spring and summer growth cycles, and to analyse relationships between parameters of nutritive value and the leaf to weight ratio (LWR). Early in the regrowth cycles when the harvestabe shoot biomass was approximately 200 g dry matter (DM) m?2 and under non-limiting N and water conditions, the in vitro true digestibility (IVTD) of DM was greater in spring than in summer because the concentration of neutral-detergent fibre (NDF) was lower and its in vitro cell wall digestibility (IVCWD) was greater. However, the rates of decline in IVTD and IVCWD and the rate of increase in NDF were greater in spring than in summer. Nitrogen deficiency decresed IVTD and IVCWD, and increased NDF concentration early in the regrowth cycles. Nitrogen deficiency, however, reduced the rate of change in the three parameters of nutritive value. By the end of growth cycles, IVTD was 59 and 42 g kg?1 DM greater when no N was applied than with non-limiting N conditions in spring and summer respectively. When no N was applied, the IVCWD was 76 and 52 g kg?1 NDF greater, whereas the NDF concentration was 35 and 42 g kg?1 DM less than under non-limiting N conditions in spring and summer respectively. The N deficiency increased the proportion of leaves in the biomass, which can explain for the most part the positve effect of the N deficiency on the nutritive value of timothy. This positive effect of the N deficiency on nutritive value though the proportion of leaves in the biomass, however, was reduced by the negative effect of N deficiency on the nutritive value of leaves or stems or both.  相似文献

In 2 experiments nitrogenous fertilizer was applied at 3 levels (0, 46 and 92 lb N/ac) to a permanent pasture and a ryegrass/clover ley and the swards were harvested before ear emergence and conserved as either artificially dried grass or tetrapod hay. Apparent dry matter digestibility and voluntary food intake of the conserved herbages were measured with sheep.
N caused a small but significant depression in apparent DM digestibility but did not affect voluntary food intake. It increased yields of DM and digestible DM significantly.
The DM digestibility and voluntary food intake of hay were always significantly lower than those of the corresponding dried grass. Voluntary food intake of all fodders was directly related to herbage digestibility and inversely related to herbage crude fibre content.  相似文献

There are potential advantages and disadvantages associated with grazing spring perennial ryegrass swards designated for first‐cut silage. These may differ for intermediate‐heading (0·50 ear emergence in the second half of May) and late‐heading (0·50 ear emergence in the first half of June) cultivars. The interactions between cultivar type, spring‐grazing frequency, silage‐harvest date and year were examined in an experiment with a randomized complete block (n = 4) design with a factorial arrangement of treatments, conducted in Ireland. The factors were (i) two perennial ryegrass mixtures: intermediate‐ vs. late‐heading cultivars, (ii) three spring‐grazing regimes: no grazing, grazing in mid‐March or grazing in both mid‐March and mid‐April, (iii) four first‐cut silage‐harvest dates that were at c. 10‐d intervals from 19 May and (iv) 2 years (1998 and 1999). The effects of cultivar mixture on herbage mass of the swards in spring were small and not statistically significant. The late‐heading cultivars provided lower amounts of herbage dry matter for harvesting for first‐cut silage but herbage with higher in vitro organic digestibility values compared with intermediate‐heading cultivars. To achieve the same amount of herbage for silage, the late‐heading cultivars needed to be harvested 8 d later than the intermediate‐heading cultivars. Even with this delay in harvest date, the late‐heading cultivars had higher in vitro organic digestibility values than the intermediate‐heading cultivars. The late‐heading cultivars could be harvested up to 30 d later and produce a higher amount of herbage for first‐cut silage with similar digestibility values compared with the intermediate‐heading cultivars.  相似文献
