A crossbreeding program was conducted to evaluate the resistant status to gastrointestinal nematode parasite infection in crossbred (F1) lambs and their Suffolk and Gulf Coast Native (Native) breed counterparts. A total of 253 lambs were included in the study over 2 years. Fecal egg count (FEC) and blood packed cell volume (PCV) of 18-20 monitor lambs of each breed group in each year were collected every other week from birth to 24-30 weeks of age. The FEC and PCV of all lambs were determined at weaning (11-12 weeks of age) and at three subsequent times when anthelmintic treatment was administered. Nematode counts of wether lambs were obtained at 30 weeks of age in the first year. The epidemiological patterns of FEC and PCV of each breed group were similar in both years. The Suffolk group consistently showed the highest FEC and the lowest PCV. Conversely, the Native group had the lowest FEC and highest PCV. For the most part, all parameters for the F1 group fell intermediate to the Native and Suffolk groups. Nematode count followed the same pattern. Heterosis analysis showed that FEC, PCV, nematode count and weight gain of the F1 group favored the Native group. These results suggested that crossbreeding Suffolk to Native sheep may be a suitable way to produce lambs with improved resistance to gastrointestinal nematode infection, but production may be compromised.  相似文献

The response to natural infection by gastrointestinal nematodes was evaluated in three groups of lambing mature ewes: 16 Florida Native; 21 Rambouillet; and 18 1/2 Florida Native x1/2 Rambouillet (F1 generation). Fecal egg counts (FEC), packed cell volume (PCV) and plasma protein levels were determined periodically through a one-year period. The highest FEC was recorded in Rambouillet ewes, with most of the means higher than 1000 eggs per gram (EPG). Florida Native and F1 ewes showed similar trends in FEC, with most of the means below 500 EPG. The highest mean PCV values were recorded in Florida Native ewes, followed in decreasing order by F1 and Rambouillet ewes. F1 ewes showed the lowest plasma protein levels and Florida Natives the highest. Fecal cultures revealed the highest percentages of Haemonchus larvae in Rambouillet ewes (>64%) and the lowest percentages in Florida Native ewes. Florida Native and F1 ewes were more resistant to gastrointestinal nematode infections than were Rambouillet ewes. High negative correlation coefficients between FEC x PCV and FEC x plasma protein levels coincided with peaks in mean FEC of Rambouillet (May and July), Florida Native and F1 ewes (October). This study showed that crossbreeding Rambouillet and Florida Native sheep resulted in the production of F1 ewes resistant against gastrointestinal nematode infections.  相似文献

A study was conducted to evaluate relative resistance of Dorper crossbred (DO), Katahdin (KA), St. Croix (SC), and Hampshire (HA) ewes to natural and experimental gastro-intestinal (GI) nematode infection over a 20-month period. The objective of Experiment 1 was to evaluate breeds for resistance to infection acquired naturally from mixed grass pastures. In Year 1 (May-December 2000) de-worming of ewes occurred during wet, hot conditions in July and during late pregnancy in December. In Year 2 (January-December 2001), ewes were de-wormed after fecal egg count (FEC) for a breed group rose above 1000 eggs per gram (epg) or after blood packed cell volume (PCV) of an individual ewe fell below 20. FEC was determined every 28 days and PCV every 14-28 days. In both the years, ewes were pastured together, except during the 28-days breeding periods, on tall fescue, bermudagrass, or ryegrass, and rotated among pastures dependent on forage availability. Ewes were in good or excellent condition (body condition score of 3-4 out of 5) throughout the study. The objective of Experiment 2 was to evaluate the breeds for relative resistance to an experimental infection with Haemonchus contortus infective larvae. Both PCV and FEC were determined every 7 days from 14 to 42 days after inoculation with 30000 infective larvae per ewe. In Experiment 1, Year 1, FEC was slightly greater and PCV was lower from July to September in DO ewes (breed x time, P<0.001). In Year 2, de-worming occurred 14 days later in DO ewes compared with other breed types. Otherwise PCV and FEC were similar among the hair breeds and higher and lower, respectively, compared with HA ewes (breed x time, P<0.001). In Experiment 2, FEC and PCV were similar among hair breeds; FEC was lower and PCV higher in hair breeds compared with that of HA ewes (P<0.01). Relative resistance of mature Dorper crossbred ewes was comparable to that of Katahdin and St. Croix ewes and superior to that of Hampshire ewes.  相似文献

The effects of non-genetic factors on responses to gastrointestinal nematode infections were examined in artificially infected indigenous Horro and Menz lambs in the central highlands of Ethiopia. The experiment involved lambs of two sexes, infection and monitoring regimens (3 levels), dam parity (4 levels) and birth types (2 levels). A total of 152 weaner lambs (103 Menz and 49 Horro) were used. Endoparasite challenge involved three infection periods (primary, secondary and tertiary) each separated by an anthelmintic treatment. Data were collected on faecal egg counts (FEC), packed cell volume (PCV), worm count, and weight gain. Female lambs were found to harbor lower numbers of T. colubriformis counts and had lower (p < 0.01) FEC in tertiary infection compared to males. Younger animals were more susceptible to the nematode infections than older animals as measured by all the parameters studied (p < 0.01). Twins had higher FEC in both secondary and tertiary infections compared to singles. Lambs born to dams of first parity had higher PCV and lower FEC values during the tertiary infection compared to other parities. These results would be used as basic information in designing a more rational control strategy and should also help to advise on better management care for less resistant sheep.  相似文献

This experiment was carried out to compare the worm burden and cellular responses in the abomasal mucosa and blood of Florida Native and Rambouillet lambs and also in animals produced by crosses of these two breeds (generations F1 and F2). Animals were exposed to infection by gastrointestinal nematodes on three different occasions. The first infection was natural, occurring while they were suckling lambs. After weaning, they were kept indoors for 53 days and then were allowed to graze a contaminated pasture for 50 days for a second natural infection. The third infection was an artificial challenge with 6000 Haemonchus contortus infective larvae. The highest mean fecal egg counts (FEC) values were found in Rambouillet lambs followed in decreasing order by F1, F2 and Florida Native lambs. Throughout the trial, most of the high mean packed cell volumes and plasma protein levels were recorded in the F2 lambs; in contrast, most of the low values were found in the Rambouillet lambs. During the natural infection period, the highest percentages of larvae in the fecal cultures of the lambs were Haemonchus. However, high percentages of Trichostrongylus larvae were found particularly in Florida Native lambs. The mean number of blood eosinophils increased after the artificial challenge, reached a peak 21 days after infection and then declined. The highest and lowest blood eosinophil means were recorded in F2 and Florida Native lambs, respectively. The H. contortus burden was significantly higher in Rambouillet and in F1 lambs than in Florida Native and F2 lambs (p < 0.05), while no significant differences were recorded among eosinophil, mast cell and globule leucocyte counts in the abomasal mucosa (p > 0.05). The highest correlation coefficient recorded at the end of this study was between FEC and worm burden (r = 0.7). These two parameters showed a moderate negative correlation with PCV, plasma protein and mast cell counts in the abomasal mucosa. The results obtained in this study indicate that crossbreeding Florida Native and Rambouillet sheep can be a rapid way to combine and improve the characteristics of these two breeds. The parasitological results were promising, however, more studies will be necessary to verify the impact of crossbreeding in other traits.  相似文献

Breed susceptibility to nematode infection was evaluated in Angus (Bos taurus) and Brangus (B. indicus crossbreed) cattle. A cow-calf herd and a yearling replacement heifer herd were monitored during one grazing season. Calves were born in March and were weaned in October. Individual rectal fecal samples were collected monthly from the two herds and processed for fecal egg counts (FEC) and coprocultures. Cow and calf FEC increased from April, reaching maximum values during the summer. Angus cows and calves had significantly (p<0.05) greater FEC than Brangus cows and calves, and Haemonchus and Cooperia were the predominant genera. Replacement heifer FEC showed a similar pattern with maximum levels during late summer/fall, and Haemonchus was the predominant genus. No significant differences were seen between breeds, however, infection levels were consistently lower in Brangus heifers. Ostertagia was present in cows and heifers only in fall/winter, which is consistent with summer inhibition. The data suggested that cows were an important source of pasture contamination for their susceptible calves and that the Brangus breed was relatively more resistant to infection. The use of B. indicus crossbreeds may help in alleviating reliance on chemical control by reducing the rate of pasture contamination and subsequent infection losses.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to determine monthly changes in body condition scores, body weights and on the prevalence of internal parasites in Nguni, Bonsmara and Angus steers raised on sweetveld. Body condition scores (BCS), body weights (BW), packed cell volume (PCV) and monthly faecal egg counts (FEC) were determined in 25 Nguni, 15 Bonsmara and 15 Angus steers. Nguni and Bonsmara steers maintained their body condition throughout the study, while the Angus lost condition. The Nguni had the highest PCV levels. The PCV levels tended to decline during the rainy season for all the breeds. The FEC were generally low. Fasciola spp. and strongyle eggs were found in 16.3 and 54.6% of the collected faecal samples, respectively. Of the three breeds, Nguni steers had the lowest parasite infestation levels, with the Bonsmara being more susceptible than the other two breeds. Generally, the egg counts observed throughout the study were low.  相似文献

This study was carried out to evaluate the relationship of abomasal inflammatory cells and parasite-specific immunoglobulin A (IgA) in mucus, with the resistance to Haemonchus contortus infection in three breeds of sheep naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes. The breeds were the native Santa Ines sheep, and the European Suffolk and Ile de France breeds. Mast cells, eosinophils and globule leucocytes were enumerated in abomasal mucosa. Eosinophils within the sub-mucosa also were counted separately. Histamine concentration was estimated in abomasal tissue samples. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was carried out in mucus samples to determine the level of IgA anti-H. contortus third and fifth instar. There were no significant differences among group means of these variables (P>0.05). The correlation coefficients between fecal egg counts (FEC)xmast cells (r=-0.490; P<0.05) and FECxeosinophils in sub-mucosa (r=-0.714; P<0.01) was significant in the Santa Ines sheep. In the Ile de France group, the correlation coefficients between globule leucocytesxFEC (r=-0.879; P<0.001) and histaminexworm burden (r=-0.833; P<0.01) were also significant. In the Santa Ines and Ile de France sheep, correlation coefficients between IgA anti-L3xworm burden and IgA anti-L3xFEC were negative. In general, inflammatory cells and IgA-parasite-specific in abomasum were inversely associated with H. contortus worm burden and FEC indicating that they may impair parasite development or fecundity in the three breeds of sheep. However, similar mean values of inflammatory cells and IgA were found in the resistant (Santa Ines) and in the susceptible (Suffolk and Ile de France) breeds of sheep. The enumeration of cells by histological assessment does not provide information on their functional activity, which may be different among breeds. Thus, the effect of breed on the functional activity of these and other inflammatory cells is an important area for further study.  相似文献

This study describes responses to artificial infection with Haemonchus contortus in ewes and lambs of 50% Dorset, 25% Rambouillet, and 25% Finn-sheep ancestry and provides estimates of genetic parameters for measures of parasite resistance. One hundred ninety-eight ewes out of 64 sires, and 386 lambs out of 25 sires were evaluated in autumn and spring of 2 yr. Ewes were dewormed shortly after weaning their lambs and lambs were dewormed at about 120 d of age. One week after deworming, ewes and lambs were dosed with approximately 10,000 infective larvae of H. contortus. After infection, BW, fecal egg counts (FEC), and packed cell volume (PCV) were measured weekly for 7 wk in lambs kept in drylot and fortnightly for 11 wk in ewes on pasture. Summary traits were defined as initial PCV, mean BW across all times, and means for PCV (MPCV) and log-transformed FEC (MLFEC) at wk 3 to 7 after infection for lambs and wk 3 to 11 after infection for ewes. Ewes and lambs did not lose weight overall in any year or season, but there was no consistent effect of year or lambing season on mean LFEC or mean PCV during infection in either ewes or lambs. Yearling ewes were less resistant to infection than older ewes, with lower PCV (P < 0.05) and higher LFEC (P < 0.05). During infection, PCV was positively correlated with BW and negatively correlated with LFEC in both ewes and lambs. In lambs, heritabilities were 0.39 (P < 0.01) for PCV, 0.10 (P < 0.05) for LFEC across all measurement times, and 0.19 (P < 0.01) for three measures of LFEC taken at the peak of infection. Heritability estimates for ewes were 0.15 (P < 0.05) for PCV and 0.31 (P < 0.01) for LFEC. Repeatabilities for LFEC and PCV across measurement times were moderate in ewes and lambs. Correlations between dam and lamb records for MLFEC were generally low, suggesting different mechanisms of resistance in lambs and nonlactating ewes. Ewes with higher genetic merit for growth as lambs were less resistant to infection as adults, but genetic merit for fertility and prolificacy were not related to parasite resistance. Lambs with higher genetic merit for body weight were more resistant to infection. Selection for resistance to H. contortus is therefore possible and should not adversely affect growth of lambs and fertility of ewes in this production environment.  相似文献

This study was designed to evaluate breed differences in resistance to Haemonchus contortus in lambs. A total of 181 ewe lambs representing crossbred Dorsets (DO) and Dorpers (DP; out of 1/2-Dorset, 1/4-Rambouillet, 1/4-Finnsheep ewes) and straight-bred Katahdins (KT) were evaluated over 3 yr. An additional 144 DO, DP, KT, and Barbados Blackbelly x St. Croix (HH) wethers were evaluated over 2 yr. Lambs were weaned at 60 to 90 d of age. After deworming at about 4 mo of age, ewe lambs received approximately 10,000 infective larvae and were evaluated for parasite resistance in drylot, whereas wethers were evaluated on pasture under conditions of natural infection. Each sex was analyzed separately. Egg counts per gram of feces (FEC), log-transformed FEC (LFEC), packed cell volumes (%), and body weights (kg) measured at 3, 4, 5, and 6 wk after deworming and reinfection were analyzed. Breed influenced all traits (P < 0.05) except BW in ewe lambs and PCV in wethers. Year and week influenced (P < 0.05) all traits. At most times, DP had the highest FEC, DO had the lowest PCV, and KT and HH had lower FEC and higher PCV than either DO or DP. Clearly, Dorper sheep were not more resistant to parasites than DO, but they were able to cope with infection better by maintaining similar or higher (P < 0.05) PCV and similar BW. Katahdin and HH were more resistant, with lower FEC (P < 0.05) than DO or DP. Breed differences were more apparent when infection levels were higher; DO and DP were less affected when infection levels were low and when animals were on a better plane of nutrition. Caribbean hair sheep originated in hot, humid regions of West Africa. They and the derivative Katahdin breed seem relatively resistant to parasitism. The Dorper, in contrast, was developed in more arid regions and exhibited little parasite resistance.  相似文献

Resistance to natural infections of Haemonchus contortus (wireworm) was studied in Merino sheep. From February 1995 to July 1996 data were collected from the OTK Merino Stud on the farm Wildebeesfontein near Hendrina in Mpumalanga province. From March 1998 to January 2000 another Merino flock at Irene in Gauteng province was included in the study. In both cases, 50 randomly-chosen animals from each group of lambs weaned were sampled weekly for faecal egg count (FEC) until a mean of 2500 eggs per gram faeces (epg) was reached. At this stage, all lambs in the group were sampled for FEC, packed cell volume (PCV) and live mass in the case of the Wildebeesfontein flock. Animals were monitored from weaning to about 1 year of age. Data from 5 different groups of lambs (583 animals and 1722 records in total) with genetic links were accumulated and analysed. Variance components and resulting heritabilities for logFEC and PCV were estimated using a bivariate animal model with repeated records. The estimated heritabilities were 0.24 +/- 0.02 for logFEC and 0.14 +/- 0.02 for PCV. A strong negative correlation (-0.84 +/- 0.06) existed between the 2 traits. The genetic correlation between PCV and live mass for the Wildebeesfontein flock was low (0.28 +/- 0.09), while that between logFEC and live mass was negative, although not significantly different from zero (-0.13 +/- 0.09). These results suggest that FEC can be used as a selection criterion for resistance to H. contortus infections in Merino sheep.  相似文献

Data from the American Angus Association, American Gelbvieh Association, and the North American Limousin Foundation were analyzed to determine whether parental genetic differences are associated with Mendelian sampling of their bull progeny or with Mendelian sampling variances and weight variances of their bull progeny's offspring. Parental differences were measured as the difference between the parents' EPD for birth weight (DIF(BW)), weaning weight direct (DIF(WW)), and yearling weight (DIF(YW)). A bull's data were used if both parents had calculated EPD and the bull had at least 25 progeny with records for the specific trait. Traits calculated for each bull were his Mendelian sampling (MS(Bull)), progeny Mendelian sampling variance (MSsigma2progeny), progeny weight variance (WTsigma2), and progeny corrected weight variance (CWTsigma2 = adjusted weight minus appropriate dam EPD) for birth, weaning, and yearling weights. Pearson correlations were computed between DIF(BW), DIF(WW), and DIF(YW) and MS(Bull), MSsigma2progeny, WTsigma2, and CWTsigma2 for each trait, within each breed. Across breeds, the correlations ranged from -.07 to .11 for MS(Bull) .01 to .14 for MSsigma2progeny, -.06 to .09 for WTsigma2, and -.06 to .08 for CWTsigma2. Although some of the correlations were significantly different from zero their relatively small magnitude indicates little relationship between parental differences in genetic merit and subsequent offspring variability for each of the three breeds.  相似文献

Fecal egg count (FEC) has been widely used as an indicator of host resistance to gastrointestinal parasites in sheep and has been shown to be a heritable trait. Two other possible indicators of parasites, dag score (DS; accumulated fecal material) and fecal consistency score (FCS), were investigated in this study, along with BW. All four traits were studied to see how heritability and genetic correlations varied with age from weaning (4 mo) to hogget age (approximately 400 d). More than 1,100 lambs, the offspring of 37 rams, were recorded eight times between weaning (3 to 5 mo of age) and hogget age (13 to 18 mo of age) on two farms. Sire models were fitted to the data from each trait at each recording and in a repeatability model involving the whole data set. Overall, the heritabilities were 0.28+/-0.072 (FEC), 0.11+/-0.036 (DS), 0.12+/-0.036 (FCS), and 0.23+/-0.070 (BW). By fitting random regression models to the time-series data, it was possible to see how these heritability values varied as the lambs aged, from weaning to hogget age. The heritability of FEC rose from 0.2 at weaning to 0.65 at 400 d. Dag score had a higher heritability (0.25) in the middle of the age range and a low value at weaning (<0.1) and hogget age (0.16). The heritability of FCS was low, with a value of 0.2 at weaning reducing to 0.05 as the animals aged. Body weight had zero heritability at weaning, which rose to greater than 0.6 at hogget age. Most traits had low genetic correlations between them, the only exception being that between FCS and DS (0.63). Most genetic correlations varied little over the age range with the exception of FEC and BW, which fell from 0 at weaning to -0.63 at hogget age. Whereas FCS and DS may be good indicators of scouring, they are very different from FEC as an indicator of host resistance to gastrointestinal parasites.  相似文献

为了筛选出适宜于河北省唐山地区养殖的肉用绵羊最佳杂交组合,更好地指导生产实践,本研究以小尾寒羊为母本,分别以澳洲白羊(AWF)、杜泊羊和夏洛莱羊为父本,分3组进行杂交试验,其中,1组为澳洲白羊和小尾寒羊杂交(AH组),2组为杜泊羊和小尾寒羊杂交(DH组),3组为夏洛莱羊和小尾寒羊杂交(XH组)。对3组肉羊杂交F1代羊的生长性能和CLPG基因的遗传效应进行测定和分析。结果表明,在相同饲养条件下,除夏寒F1代母羊的初生重略低于澳寒F1代母羊外,夏寒杂交F1代羊的初生重(公羊)、断奶重、6月龄体重、初生到断奶时的平均日增重均为最高,且显著或极显著的高于杜寒和澳寒F1代羊(P<0.05,P<0.01)。断奶到6月龄时的平均日增重,杜寒F1代公、母羊均为最高,其次是夏寒F1代公、母羊,杜寒F1代公、母羊与其余两组均未达显著性差异(P>0.05)。3月龄体尺指标除了体长和胸宽,6月龄体尺指标除了体长和体高,其余均是夏寒F1代羊最大,且部分指标极显著高于澳寒F1代羊(P<0.01)。以上研究结果说明,夏寒F1代羊,基础体重较高,出生后生长速度始终较快,而杜寒F1代羊在断奶后表现出较快的生长速度。3个肉羊杂交组合F1代羊CLPG基因的遗传效应分析结果表明,CLPG基因的第41 bp处存在一个错义突变位点(g.C > T),该位点有CC和CT 2种基因型,其中CC为优势基因型,C为优势等位基因。具CT型个体的初生重、断奶重、6月龄体重以及3月龄和6月龄各体尺指标,均明显高于具CC型的个体。综合以上结果,提示夏洛莱羊与小尾寒羊杂交优势较为明显,T等位基因可促进肉用绵羊的生长发育,建议在河北省唐山地区进行肉羊生产时,尽可能选择夏寒杂交组合且携带有T等位基因的个体。  相似文献

Genetic parameters of natural resistance were estimated in Rh?n and Merinoland (German Merino) sheep following experimental infection with Haemonchus contortus. A total of 133 Rh?n and 244 Merinoland lambs descending from 5 and 6 rams, respectively, were evaluated. Each helminth-naive lamb was orally infected with 5000 infective third-stage larvae (L(3)) of the nematode H. contortus at 12 weeks of age. Faecal egg counts (FEC) and haematocrit values were measured in all lambs at 16 and 20 weeks of age. Seventy-nine Merinoland and 29 Rh?n male lambs were slaughtered immediately after the second sampling and worms were collected. Mean worm burden was calculated and the length of adults worms from an aliquot was measured.FEC of Rh?n sheep was higher compared with Merinoland sheep (P<0.01). H. contortus L(3)-larvae specific antibody (IgL) level was higher in Rh?n sheep (P<0.05). However, no differences in haematocrit, worm burden and IgG antibody values could be found between the breeds. Heritabilities for log FEC (+/-S.E.) were 0.0 and 0.07 (+/-0.07) for the first sample in Rh?n and Merinoland sheep, respectively. Values for the second sample were higher in both breeds (Rh?n 0.35+/-0.14, P<0.05; Merinoland 0.17+/-0.07, P<0.05). Corresponding heritabilities for haematocrit were higher in Merinoland (0.56+/-0.20 and 0.51+/-0.27) compared with Rh?n (0.29+/-0.12 and 0.08+/-0.13). Heritabilities for worm burden were high in Rh?n (0.54+/-0.2) and low in Merinoland (0.06+/-0.14 and 0.11+/-0.15). Estimated values for IgL were between 0.13 (+/-0.11) for the first sample in both breeds and 0.30 (+/-0.18) for the second sample in Rh?n sheep. Corresponding heritabilities for IgG were not different from 0.0 in both breeds (P>0.05). Positive phenotypic correlations were estimated for IgG and IgL values in both breeds (P<0.01). IgG was significantly (P<0.05) and positively correlated with worm burden in male Merinoland and IgL with worm burden in male Rh?n sheep.  相似文献

Compared to INRA 401 lambs reared in France, Black Belly (BB) lambs reared in Guadeloupe (F.W.I.) were highly resistant to both primary and secondary experimental infection with Haemonchus contortus. To investigate this huge inter-breed difference, a nucleus flock of BB was constituted, and experiments were conducted to: (i) confirm this difference in lambs born in France, (ii) check whether it was similar for Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Teladorsagia circumcincta, and (iii) find out whether this difference was age-related. Forty BB lambs, 84 F1 lambs (BB siresxINRA 401 ewes) and 88 INRA 401 lambs born in two cohorts were used in an experimental design involving three host breeds, both genders and two age-groups (3.5- and 7-month-old when first infected). The limited availability of BB lambs made the study incomplete. Infection consisted of the administration of two doses of 10,000 infective larvae of one of the nematode species, separated by an anthelmintic treatment and an interval of 1 week before the second dose was administered. Fecal egg counts (FECs) were done on Days 28 and 35 after each infection; ewe lambs of the INRA 401 and F1 breeds were necropsied, the worm burden was established, the length of the female worms measured and the eggs in utero counted. For H. contortus and T. colubriformis, the FEC was lower in the BB than in the INRA 401 lambs, and the FEC found for the F1 lambs was intermediate. For T. circumcincta, only data for the F1 and INRA 401 lambs were available, and the FECs for these breeds were the same. In all three breeds, the FEC determined after the second dose was significantly lower than that found after the first dose in the ewe lambs, but not in the ram lambs. Infecting the lambs when they were 7- instead of 3.5-month-old significantly lowered egg excretion of both parasites in the F1 (P<0.0001), but not the INRA 401 lambs. Worm numbers in the F1 and in the INRA 401 ewe lambs confirmed the FEC data, many F1 lambs being free of T. colubriformis. The H. contortus female worms were shorter and had fewer eggs in utero in the F1 than in the INRA 401 lambs. A higher proportion of T. circumcincta was at the fourth larval stage in the F1 lambs. In conclusion, the BB breed is much more resistant than INRA 401 to H. contortus, with the F1 lambs being more like the BBs after the second dose. FAMACHA is a practical on-farm system designed to provide small ruminant producers a tool for improving their management of Haemonchus contortus infections. Although this system has become very popular and widely accepted by small ruminant producers in many regions of the southern United States, there is very limited data reported on the effectiveness of the FAMACHA system when performed by farmers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the FAMACHA system for on-farm use by small ruminant producers during the summer season. Small ruminant producers from Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, and Puerto Rico were trained to use the FAMACHA system by veterinarians and scientists experienced with this method. FAMACHA scores were assigned at least every 2 weeks by producers to weaned and mature sheep (n=552) and goats (n=676) of various breeds and ages between April and September 2004. At intervals that varied among farms from 2 to 8 weeks, researchers determined body condition scores (BCS; 1=thin and 5=fat) and collected blood and feces from a group of animals selected randomly to determine packed cell volume (PCV) and fecal egg counts (FEC). The control of gastrointestinal nematodes requires an understanding of their epidemiology so that particular parasite stages can be targeted. Dam infection during early lactation is one example of this in ruminant nematode infections. The existence of the peri-parturient relaxation in immunity and its impact on productivity were examined in a Creole goat flock from Guadeloupe, exposed to mixed natural infection (predominantly Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis). A total of 1,511 l were obtained from 909 does resulting from 463 dams and 150 sires. Fecal and blood samples were collected at kidding before anthelmintic drenching, 4 and 6 weeks after kidding. The traits analyzed were logarithm transformed fecal egg counts (FEC), packed cell volume (PCV), and logarithm transformed blood eosinophilia counts (EOS) for does at each sampling point and changes in these during the postpartum period. With the exception of the PCV values measured at kidding, lactating does had significantly higher FEC and lower PCV than control dry does at every sampling point. Geometric means of FEC in lactating does were 819 +/- 174, 677 +/- 146 and, 699 +/- 160 eggs per gram (EPG) at kidding, 4 and 6 weeks after kidding respectively. Geometric means of FEC in dry does were 187 +/- 57, 89 +/- 28, 133 +/- 43 at these time points, respectively. EOS differences were not consistent between groups and probably not specific enough for variations in Creole goats' peri-parturient rise to be discussed. As does aged, their egg output decreased and primiparous does always had greater egg output than multiparous ones. Overall, does' FEC at 4 weeks after kidding decreased by 1.3% each year. The higher the litter size, the higher the FEC at kidding and inverse applied for PCV measurements. Does that stopped lactating had significantly lower FEC and higher PCV values than lactating does with low milk yields. Higher infection rates during early lactation in Creole goats were recorded in does with lower maternal ability assessed by the average daily weight gain of kids between 10 and 30 days of age. Kids from dams with higher FEC (i.e. >600 EPG higher than corresponding does) had 17% lower average daily weight gain between 30 and 70 days postpartum and were approximately 1 kg lighter at weaning than kids from dams with lower FEC. Thus, it is clear that a peri-parturient rise in FEC exists in Creole goats. By controlling the intensity of this peri-parturient rise in FEC, herd health and productivity could be substantially improved.  相似文献

The present study investigated the genetic component of host resistance to gastrointestinal nematode infections in two goat breeds in a semi-arid climatic region of India. The study was carried out on 888 animals belonging to two goat breeds. Live weight, faecal egg counts (FEC) and packed cell volume (PCV) following natural parasite challenge were measured at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of age over a 3-year period. Pedigree relationships between goats extending back 3 generations were available. The study estimated the heritabilities of indicator traits (FEC and PCV) in goats and also quantified relationships between indicator traits and growth traits at the genetic, phenotypic and environmental level. It also provided an insight for the inclusion of genetic information on resistance to nematode infection into breeding programmes. The heritabilities of the indicator traits were low to moderate in this population. Genetic correlations between FEC at 6, 9 and 12 months of age were strong (approaching unity) indicating that the trait may be controlled by same genes at these different ages. The genetic correlation between FEC and PCV from 6 months of age onwards was negative and moderate to strong. Correlations between FEC and growth traits tended to be negative. Selection index modeling investigated the use of FEC, PCV and bodyweight in selection schemes. Selection based on the measurements at 9 months of age was proposed as a means of improving productivity as well as reducing pasture contamination, thereby enhancing sustainable livestock production.  相似文献

The present study evaluated Nelore cattle with different degrees of resistance to natural infections by gastrointestinal nematodes. One hundred weaned male cattle, 11-12 months of age, were kept on the same pasture and evaluated from October 2003 to February 2004. Faecal and blood samples were collected for parasitological, haematological and immunological tests. In February 2004, the 10 most resistant and the 10 most susceptible animals were selected based on individual means of nematode faecal egg counts (FEC). Such animals were slaughtered for worm burden determination and nematode species identification. The repeatability estimates for FEC (+/-S.D.), log-transformed FEC and packed-cell volume (PCV) in all animals were 0.3 (+/-0.05), 0.26 (+/-0.04) and 0.42 (+/-0.05), respectively. The resistant group showed lower FEC and worm burdens than the susceptible group (P<0.05). There were no significant differences between groups regarding mean body weight, weight gain, PCV and total serum protein values (P>0.05). The resistant group showed higher total serum IgE levels (P<0.05) and higher mean eosinophil blood counts. However, the latter was statistically significant only 42 days after the beginning of the study. Nematodes Cooperia punctata and Haemonchus placei were predominant and the correlation between Cooperia and Haemonchus burdens was 0.64 (P<0.05), which indicated that animals presenting increased numbers of one of those genera probably had increased numbers of the other. The current study provides further evidence of IgE active role in nematode immunity and suggests that total serum IgE level might serve as an additional marker to select Nelore cattle that are responsive to H. placei and C. punctata infections.  相似文献
