The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of repeated arthrocentesis and a single joint lavage on cytologic variables of synovial fluid. The left tarsi of 5 healthy Holstein calves were selected for the study. Samples of synovial fluid were collected daily for 4 d, then every 4 d until day 24. On day 2, joint lavage was performed with lactated Ringer's solution in all the calves. Cytologic examinations, performed by the same clinical pathologist, included the determination of total protein concentration, total leukocyte count, and differential counts (of neutrophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes). The presence of lameness or swelling and other results of physical examination were recorded regularly during the study. No clinical signs of joint disease were observed during the study. Bacterial cultures of specimens collected on day 2 were negative for all the calves. All cytologic values but 1 peaked on day 2 and progressively returned to normal. In comparison with the results for day 1, the synovial fluid total leukocyte, neutrophil, and monocyte counts were significantly increased on days 2 and 3, and the total leukocyte and monocyte counts were also significantly increased on day 4. The monocyte and lymphocyte percentages were significantly decreased until day 4, whereas the neutrophil percentages were significantly increased until day 8. The total protein concentrations were significantly increased until day 3. There were no significant differences between values for specimens taken 4 d apart. This study demonstrated that, although arthrocentesis induces a moderate inflammatory response, the joints seem to rapidly adapt. A 4-d interval between arthrocenteses is suitable when studying cellular components of the synovial fluid. However, when arthrocentesis is repeated daily, a minimal interval of 8 d should be respected.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to examine the effects of parenteral administration of iron and copper on hematological parameters, weight gain, and health of neonatal dairy calves in the period when iron and copper deficiency could be existed. Twenty-four Holstein calves were used for the experiment and randomly assigned to four different treatments. Treatments consisted of (1) control (no injections of Fe and Cu), (2) test 1 (1000 mg Fe as fe-dextran was injected to each calf at day 2 of age), (3) test 2 (160 mg Cu as methionine-copper complex was injected to each calf at day 14 of age), and (4) test 3 (Fe and Cu were injected to each calf as mentioned previously). Blood samples were collected from all of the calves within 24-48 hours after birth and at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days of age for measuring hematological parameters and within 24-48 hours after birth and at 14, 21 and 28 days of age for the determination of iron, copper, TIBC concentrations, and AST activity. Anti-coagulated blood was analyzed shortly after collection for: number of red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), heamatocrit (HCT), total leukocyte count (WBC), Platelet (Plt), MCH, MCV, MCHC, and differential leukocyte counts. The amounts of iron, copper, TIBC, and AST were measured in serum. Group had significant effects on the amounts of HCT, RBC, hemoglobin, MCV, neutrophil, weekly weight gain, and daily gain during each week (p < 0.05). Sampling time had significant effects on the amounts of RBC, MCV, MCH, MCHC, WBC, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, platelet, fibrinogen, copper, TIBC, AST, weight, weekly gain and, daily gain during each week (p < 0.05). significant interactions between sampling time and group were seen for HCT, RBC, hemoglobin, MCV, platelet, total protein, fibrinogen, iron, and TIBC (p < 0.05). Improved RBC parameters and MCV were seen in calves of group 4 (test 3) in comparing with control group. Total and daily gains were also significantly improved in test groups in comparing with control group (p < 0.05). No significant difference was seen for the days of treatment between groups.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine effects of parturition on glucocorticoid receptor (GR) expression in neutrophils, serum cortisol concentration, and total blood leukocyte and neutrophil counts in periparturient dairy cows. ANIMALS: 23 Holstein cows. PROCEDURE: Blood samples were collected from 8 multiparous and 5 primiparous periparturient cows at various times from 28 days before parturition until 14 days after parturition. Glucocorticoid receptor expression in neutrophils, serum cortisol concentration, and total blood leukocyte and neutrophil counts were determined. Results were compared with results from control samples obtained from 5 multiparous and 5 primiparous Holstein cows in midpregnancy. RESULTS: Neutrophils from periparturient cows had 49% reduction in GR expression at calving, compared with GR expression 2 to 4 weeks before calving, and 39% reduction, compared with neutrophils from cows in midpregnancy. Reduction in neutrophil GR expression began 1 week before calving and was most severe at calving and 24 hours after calving; a significant difference in GR expression was detected between primiparous and multiparous cows. Serum cortisol concentrations and total leukocyte and neutrophil counts were significantly increased at calving and returned to baseline values by 24 hours after calving. Significant negative correlations were detected between neutrophil GR expression and serum cortisol concentration, total leukocyte count, and neutrophil count. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Reduced GR expression in blood neutrophils of periparturient dairy cows was associated with increased serum cortisol concentrations, leukocytosis, and neutrophilia. Thus, GR down-regulation in neutrophils may be involved in periparturient neutrophil dysregulation and may cause increased susceptibility to mastitis.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Age-related changes in hematologic values are known to occur in many species. Few published studies include repeated measurements of hematologic parameters in calves during the first months of life. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to monitor hematologic values by sequential measurements from birth to 6 months of age in 15 healthy calves of the Norwegian Red breed, and compare the results to reference intervals for adult, lactating dairy cows. METHODS: Fifteen clinically healthy calves were sampled every week during the first 5 weeks of life and every month thereafter until 6 months of age. Hematologic values were measured using the ADVIA 120 hematology system. Reference intervals were determined for 75 healthy adult cows of the same breed. RESULTS: Compared with adult reference intervals, the MCV was lower and the RBC count was higher in calves throughout the investigation period. Hemoglobin concentration stayed largely within the adult reference interval. Mean MCHC was lower than adult values for 5 weeks, then increased and reached adult values by weeks 10-12. The mean lymphocyte count for calves reached adult reference values at weeks 6-8, and the mean monocyte count increased steadily until weeks 14-16. For most leukocytes, interindividual variation was larger during the first 5-8 weeks of life. The mean platelet count for calves was higher than the adult reference interval until weeks 19-21 of age. CONCLUSIONS: Age-specific reference intervals for calves from birth to 6 month of age are needed for RBC count, MCV, MCHC, red cell distribution width, and platelet and lymphocyte counts.  相似文献

Nine pregnant cows were laparotomized and their fetuses were immunized with tetanus toxoid, killed Brucella abortus, and killed Mycobacterium bovis. Blastogenesis assays and total leukocyte and differential counts were done when the calves were 1, 2, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 60 days of age. Initial blastogenesis responses to antigens, phytohemagglutinin, and concanavalin A were not positive as frequently as were the responses obtained when the calves were 2 to 3 weeks of age. The probability of obtaining a positive response to an antigen was positively correlated with the magnitude of the response, as determined by delayed-type hypersensitivity skin reactions. Leukocyte and differential WBC counts in immunized calves were similar to those of unimmunized calves. The mean leukocyte count for the immunized calves remained near 16,000 cells/mm3; blood obtained in the first few days after birth contained a greater number of neutrophils than lymphocytes, whereas lymphocyte-to-neutrophil ratio gradually approached those of adult cattle, in which lymphocytes predominate.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether platelet-activating factor (PAF) is involved in acute lung microvascular injury associated with pneumonic pasteurellosis in calves. ANIMALS: 15 healthy 2- to 4-week-old male Holstein calves. PROCEDURE: Calves were anesthetized and inoculated intrabronchially with saline (0.9% NaCl) solution (n = 5) or 1x10(9) Pasteurella haemolytica organisms (n = 10). Of the 10 calves inoculated with P haemolytica, 5 also were treated with WEB 2086, a potent inhibitor of PAF, and 5 were treated with vehicle. Blood and bronchoalveolar lavage samples were collected before and 1, 2, 4, and 6 hours after inoculation of P. haemolytica. Blood samples were analyzed to evaluate total number and differential counts of leukocytes, dilute whole-blood leukocyte deformability, size of neutrophils, and neutrophil CD11b expression. Bronchoalveolar lavage samples were analyzed for total number and differential counts of nucleated cells, total protein concentration, and hemoglobin concentration. Size and gross and histologic appearance of lung lesions also was determined. RESULTS: Treatment of calves with WEB 2086 reduced size of lung lesions, attenuated the increase in microvascular permeability, and reduced neutrophil infiltration in the first 4 hours after inoculation. Treatment with WEB 2086 also attenuated a decrease in leukocyte deformability, increase in size of neutrophils, and CD11b expression by circulating neutrophils. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: It appears that PAF is a major mediator for altered lung microvascular permeability and activation of circulating neutrophils in the first 4 hours after onset of pneumonic pasteurellosis in calves.  相似文献

Peritoneal fluid from 10 healthy young male Holstein calves was analyzed three times (2 to 3 days, 12 to 15 days and 27 to 30 days) during the first month of life. A new technique for collection of peritoneal fluid from calves positioned in left lateral recumbency was developed. The technique was found to be reliable and without noticeable complications. Effects of low-dose LPS (0.1 μg/kg IV) on leukocyte and platelet parameters measured using an Advia 120 hematology analyzer were investigated. Five dogs received a saline sham treatment prior to LPS, and blood was collected before and 3, 6, and 24 h post-treatment. LPS-treated dogs had mild neutrophil toxic change and increased neutrophil bands at 3 and 6 h. Compared to saline-treated controls, total leukocyte, neutrophil, and monocyte counts of LPS-treated dogs were significantly decreased at 3 h and increased at 24 h. Compared to baseline, total leukocyte counts of LPS-treated dogs were significantly decreased at 3 h and increased at 24 h. Mean platelet volume was significantly increased and mean platelet component concentration was decreased at 3 h compared to baseline. Platelet count was significantly decreased at 3 and 6 h; plateletcrit did not change significantly. High dosage is not required in order to detect LPS-mediated hematologic effects in dogs. Low-dose LPS administration causes significant changes in leukocyte and platelet indices in dogs without causing severe clinical signs or death.  相似文献

Blood samples were obtained from 155 North American river otters (Lontra canadensis; 94 adult males, 38 adult females, 10 juvenile males, and 13 juvenile females) to establish baseline hematology and from 50 adult river otters (40 males and 10 females) for baseline serum biochemistry parameters for the species. The otters were livetrapped from eastern North Carolina (USA) during a 4-yr period. Data for 14 routine hematologic parameters and 22 serum chemistry assays showed significant differences in total leukocyte count and absolute neutrophil and monocyte numbers for adults versus juveniles, red blood cell counts and hemoglobin between adult and juvenile males, and calcium and alkaline phosphatase values for adult males between years of the study and an increase in leukocyte counts and absolute neutrophils with increased degree of trap injury sustained.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To determine the structural and functional alterations in circulating neutrophils that may lead to sequestration in lung microvasculature and endothelial injury in calves with experimentally induced pneumonic pasteurellosis. ANIMALS: 10 healthy, 2- to 4-week-old male Holstein calves. PROCEDURES: Holstein calves were anesthetized and inoculated intrabronchially with Dulbecco phosphate buffered saline (0.9% NaCl) solution (DPBSS; 5 control calves) or 1 x 10(9) Pasteurella haemolytica organisms (5 infected calves). Blood samples were collected before and 1, 2, 4, and 6 hours after inoculation. Total and differential WBC count, dilute whole blood leukocyte deformability, neutrophil size distribution, and neutrophil surface CD11b expression were measured in blood samples. RESULTS: A progressive decrease in leukocyte deformability and increase in neutrophil size was detected 1, 2, 4, and 6 hours after inoculation of P haemolytica. Neutrophil surface CD11b expression was greater than baseline values at 6 hours after inoculation of P haemolytica. Two populations of neutrophils with an increase in size were detected in P haemolytica-infected calves. Both subpopulations had increased CD11b expression, compared with neutrophils that were typical in size. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Neutrophils circulate in an activated and nondeformable state in calves with experimentally induced pneumonic pasteurellosis. A decrease in neutrophil deformability and neutrophil aggregation may contribute to neutrophil trapping in the lung microvasculature during pneumonic pasteurellosis in calves.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Despite treatment, many dogs still die of complications related to canine parvoviral (CPV) enteritis. Effective prognostication would be beneficial in managing this disease. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesize that the occurrence of leukocytopenias at admission and at 24 and 48 hours after admission, and changes in absolute leukocyte counts over time, could be used to predict outcome. ANIMALS: Sixty-two puppies with confirmed CPV. METHODS: A prospective study was performed. CBC was performed daily until discharge or death (in which case a postmortem examination was performed). RESULTS: Of the nonsurvivors (10/62; 16%), 9 died because of complications of the disease and 1 was euthanized because of a poor prognosis. There was a statistical significant difference in the occurrence of leukocytopenias between groups at 24 and 48 hours postadmission. The survivors showed a significant increase over time in certain leukocyte types (specifically lymphocytes) compared with values at admission. The positive predictive value for survivors was high. Nonsurvivors had marked thymic and lymphoid atrophy and marked bone marrow hypocellularity. CONCLUSION: An accurate prognosis could be obtained at 24 hours after admission by evaluating the change in total leukocyte, band neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, and eosinophil counts.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The ADVIA 120 is an automated laser cell counter widely used in veterinary medicine. Although specific software for equine samples is available and validated, only a few reports have been published comparing the ADVIA 120 with other methods for equine hemogram evaluation. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare the hematologic values and reference intervals obtained on the ADVIA 120 with those obtained on an impedance cell counter and manual differential counts in healthy horses. METHODS: EDTA-anticoagulated blood samples were obtained from 114 clinically healthy horses of various breeds, both sexes, and 2-6 years of age. Samples were stored for up to 12 hours at 4 degrees C and then analyzed on the ADVIA 120 and the Hemat 8. A 100-cell to 200-cell differential leukocyte count was performed by 3 independent observers on May-Grünwald-Giemsa-stained smears. Intra-assay precision of the ADVIA 120 was determined by analyzing 5 replicates each of 10 of the blood samples. RESULTS: Results from the ADVIA were significantly higher than those from the impedance counter for RBC count, total WBC count, hemoglobin concentration, red cell distribution width, MCH, and MCHC, and significantly lower for HCT and platelet count. Significantly higher neutrophil and basophil counts and significantly lower lymphocyte counts were obtained with the ADVIA 120 compared with manual counts. Based on Passing-Bablok regression analysis, RBC and platelet counts were in good agreement between the 2 analyzers; a constant and proportional bias was present for other values. Coefficients of variation for erythrocyte parameters on the ADVIA were <1%, but were higher for platelet (6%), total WBC (2%), differential WBC (4%-30%), and reticulocyte (75%) counts. CONCLUSIONS: Results obtained with equine samples on the ADVIA 120 were comparable with those obtained on an impedance counter; reference intervals differed statistically but overlapped. The ADVIA had poor precision for reticulocyte and differential leukocyte counts such that the latter should always be verified on smears.  相似文献

Correlations between leukocyte counts and serum interferon titers were determined in calves given hydrocortisone (HC) and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus. Calves were injected with either 1 mg or 3 mg of HC/kg of body weight every 8 hours for a total of 9 injections each. Control calves were given placebo injections. Viral inoculation was given IV 10 hours after the 1st dose of HC or placebo was given. By the time of viral inoculation, all calves injected with HC had developed neutrophilia, and the calves injected with 3 mg of HC also developed leukocytosis, lymphopenia, and eosinopenia; total leukocyte counts in calves injected with 1 mg of HC were increased, but not as much as in other HC-treated calves. Leukocyte counts in calves given placebo remained essentially unchanged before viral inoculation. At 1 day after IBR virus was inoculated, the number of circulating lymphocytes in HC-treated calves and control calves was decreased by more than 50%, on the average, of the counts taken before the HC injections or inoculation of virus. A significant negative correlation existed between the numbers of circulating lymphocytes and serum interferon titers at 1, 2, and 3 days after inoculation with IBR virus. The interferon response of calves undergoing lymphocyte suppression due to HC was not impaired, but was enhanced.  相似文献

Continuous-flow centrifugation leukapheresis techniques were used to collect 300-ml volumes of leukocyte-rich plasma from 5 nonmedicated horses and from 5 corticosteroid-stimulated horses. White blood cell counts and differential counts were performed on the horses before (base line) and up to 48 hours after leukapheresis. Systemic administration of hydrocortisone increased numbers of total WBC and neutrophils and improved harvest of these cells. Nonmedicated horses had a mean yield of 3.38 X 10(10) leukocytes in the 300-ml volume. Stimulated horses yielded a mean of 6.88 X 10(10) leukocytes. After leukapheresis, WBC counts decreased a mean of 38% in nonstimulated horses and decreased a mean of 30% in stimulated horses. By 6 hours after leukapheresis, circulating WBC counts of horses in both groups had returned to preleukapheresis values. The relationship between neutrophil yield and the 4 variables (preleukapheresis WBC count, preleukapheresis neutrophil count, preleukapheresis lymphocyte count, and the PCV of the leukocyte-rich plasma) were examined, using simple (pair-wise) correlation and multiple linear regression. A significant positive correlation was found between neutrophil yield and preleukapheresis WBC and neutrophil counts. Because sodium citrate was used in the collection system to prevent extracorporeal blood coagulation, ionized and total serum calcium concentrations were monitored before and after leukapheresis. Although total serum calcium concentrations remained unchanged, ionized calcium concentrations decreased approximately 33% from base-line values during the 2-hour leukapheresis procedures. Holstein steer calves received a single injection of Miglyol (Sasol Chemical Industries, Ltd.) subcutaneously as a placebo, dihydroheptaprenol (DHP) (4 mg/kg) emulsified with lecithin subcutaneously, DHP in solution in Miglyol (4 mg/kg) subcutaneously, or DHP in solution in Miglyol (4 mg/kg) intranasally. The DHP emulsified in lecithin emulsion administered subcutaneously caused a substantial increase in body temperature, total leukocyte count, total neutrophil count, neutrophil cytochrome-c reduction, and neutrophil iodination 24 hours after administration and, for some of the parameters, at 48 hours. The DHP formulation in Miglyol did not have any of these effects when administered subcutaneously or intranasally. The carrier and formulation of DHP apparently have major effects on the biologic activity of DHP.  相似文献

Determining the immune responses to the development of endometritis during the peripartum period may assist in the development of more efficient reproductive management regimens for dairy herds. In this study, we compared the peripartum immune responses of dairy cows that develop endometritis by 4 weeks postpartum (n = 11) to cows that did not develop this disease (n = 19). Blood samples were collected 1 week before calving, just after or during calving, and then at weeks 1, 2, 3, and 4 postpartum. Cows that developed endometriris had significantly higher total leukocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte, and monocyte counts than the control cows (P < 0.05) at all time points. The leukocytes from cows that developed endometritis were significantly less phagocytic than those from control cows at all sampling time points (P < 0.01). The serum TNFalpha concentrations of the control cows decreased linearly from the prepartum time point (P = 0.0029), but the endometritis cows showed a different profile (P > 0.05). As a result, the serum TNFalpha concentrations were greater in the endometritis group (P < 0.01) than in the control group during the third and fourth weeks postpartum. The greater total leukocyte numbers and neutrophil, lymphocyte and monocyte counts, and the maintenance of elevated serum TNFalpha levels in the cows with endometritis may be due to infection in the postpartum period. Furthermore, the decreased phagocytic capacity of leukocytes during the peripartum period, including at the prepartum time point, makes cows more susceptible to postpartum endometritis.  相似文献

One hundred fifty feeder steers (mean body weight, 195 kg) were assigned to 1 of 3 transport groups and were deprived of feed and water (fasted) for 24 hours. Additionally, calves were transported on a commercial livestock trailer for 0 (control-fasted only), 12 (short haul), or 24 (long haul) hours. Blood samples were obtained from the jugular vein before calves were loaded on the transport vehicle and immediately after calves of the long-haul group returned to the research feedlot. Complete blood counts were performed and 32 mineral, enzyme, and biochemical constituents were measured. Calf morbidity, mortality, and average daily weight gain were evaluated during the next 56 days. Duration of transport did not affect average daily gain; however, calves of the short-haul group had significantly (P less than 0.05) higher morbidity and mortality than did those of the control and long-haul groups. In all groups, results of differential leukocyte counts were indicative of stress response. Significant (P less than 0.05) linear contrasts were observed between duration of transport and erythrocyte, leukocyte, segmented neutrophil, lymphocyte, and eosinophil counts and results of serum enzyme (alanine transaminase, hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, total lactate dehydrogenase [LD], and LD-1, LD-3, and LD-4 isoenzymes), iron, urea nitrogen, beta-globulin, glucose, and urea nitrogen-to-creatinine ratio determinations. Significant (P less than 0.05) quadratic contrasts were observed between duration of transport and serum unsaturated iron binding capacity, total iron binding capacity, and LD-5 percentage. Total serum protein levels, serum protein fraction levels, and specific serum immunoglobulin class or subclass levels were measured in colostrum-fed (CF) and colostrum-deprived (CD) calves during the first 144 hours after birth. Total serum protein values increased at 24 hours in the CF group and then decreased slightly at 144 hours. The increase in total serum protei5) in beta1-, beta2-, and gamma-globulins. The beta2- and gamma-globulin levels decreased by 144 hours, while the serum level of beta1-globulin continued to increase. The CD calves exhibited a significant decrease (P less than 0.05) in total serum protein at 24 hours, folhours, the level of beta1-globulin inlowed by a significant increase (P less than 0.05) at 144 hours. At 24 hours, the level of beta1-globulin decreased slightly, and the level of beta2- and gamma-globulins increased slightly. At 144 creased, and the level of gamma-globulin decreased. The beta2-globulin level did not change. At birth, immunoglobulin (Ig) M was detected in 5 of the 10 calves, IgG1 in 6 of the 10 calves, and IgG2 in 3 of the 10 calves. By 24 hours after birth, all CF calves had detectable levels of IgM, IgG1, and IgG2, and there were significant increases (P less than 0.01) in the mean serum levels of all 3 immunoglobulins. By 144 hours after birth, the serum levels of IgM, IgG1, and IgG2 decreased to various degrees. At 24 hours, the IgM level had not increased in CD calves; however, the level of IgG2 appeared to increase slightly, and the mean IgG1 level increased by approximately 50%. By 144 hours after birth, there was a significant increase (P less than 0.01) in the mean level of serum IgM. The level of IgG, also appeared to increase substantially, while the level of IgG2 appeared to increase slightly.  相似文献

Calves were challenge exposed in separate experiments with parainfluenza-3 (PI-3) virus or infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus. Blood neutrophils were assayed for functional activity every other day for at least 3 weeks by random migration, Staphylococcus aureus ingestion, antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity, cytochrome-c reduction, iodination, and native chemiluminescence. Exposure to PI-3 virus resulted in a brief febrile response and no other clinical signs. Alterations in total or differential WBC counts were not detected. Chemiluminescence and iodination activities were reduced from activities before exposure. Exposure to IBR virus resulted in mild clinical signs and a febrile response of several days' duration. Total WBC and mononuclear cell counts were reduced. Random migration was reduced, whereas S aureus ingestion was enhanced. We concluded that infection of calves with IBR virus and PI-3 virus might directly or indirectly result in alterations of neutrophil function. The functional alterations apparently are different for each virus. These virus-induced alterations in neutrophil function might predispose calves to secondary bacterial pneumonia.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of an adjuvanted modified-live bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) vaccine against challenge with a virulent type 2 BVDV strain in calves with or without maternal antibodies against the virus. DESIGN: Challenge study. ANIMALS: 23 crossbred dairy calves. PROCEDURES: Calves were fed colostrum containing antibodies against BVDV or colostrum without anti-BVDV antibodies within 6 hours of birth and again 8 to 12 hours after the first feeding. Calves were vaccinated with a commercial modified-live virus combination vaccine or a sham vaccine at approximately 5 weeks of age and challenged with virulent type 2 BVDV 3.5 months after vaccination. Clinical signs of BVDV infection, development of viremia, and variation in WBC counts were recorded for 14 days after challenge exposure. RESULTS: Calves that received colostrum free of anti-BVDV antibodies and were vaccinated with the sham vaccine developed severe disease (4 of the 7 calves died or were euthanatized). Calves that received colostrum free of anti-BVDV antibodies and were vaccinated and calves that received colostrum with anti-BVDV antibodies and were vaccinated developed only mild or no clinical signs of disease. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that the modified-live virus vaccine induced a strong protective immune response in young calves, even when plasma concentrations of maternal antibody were high. In addition, all vaccinated calves were protected against viral shedding, whereas control calves vaccinated with the sham vaccine shed virus for an extended period of time.  相似文献
