In carnivorous fish species, zooplankton is one of the main food items in the early life stages and some fish species continue feeding on such food items further along the life stages even in the farming environment. In this study, the intake of natural food items was assessed in juvenile pirarucu Arapaima gigas reared in earthen ponds. Juvenile pirarucu (12.2 ± 4.32 g and 12.1 ± 1.13 cm) were stocked in fertilized earthen ponds (240 m²). For the analysis of the fish stomach content and plankton in the pond water, the fish and pond water were sampled weekly for 75 days and biweekly until the fish reached a mean weight of 750 g. Although artificial feed was used, pirarucu also ingested the natural food available in the pond water. Among the zooplankton, pirarucu demonstrated feeding preference for cladocerans despite the abundance of rotifers and copepods. Cladocerans were present in more than 80% of the stomach contents of fish up to 300 g and in 65%, 45% and 17% of fish of 301–500 g, 501–700 g and 701–900 g respectively. Copepods were present only in fish up to 500 g at low abundance. High ingestion of insects and plant material was observed in the stomach content of fish of all size classes. The results demonstrate that juvenile pirarucu ingest natural food available in the farming pond and suggests that the adoption of pond fertilization practices may have positive effects on fish growth performance.  相似文献

In the pearl cultivation farms of the Ehime Prefecture, Japan, mass mortalities of the pearl oyster Pinctada fucata have occurred since 1994. The occurrences of mass mortality roughly coincided with a shift of the dominant phytoplankton from Skeletonema and Chaetoceros to Chaetoceros and Nitzschia all of which belong to Bacillariophyceae. Hence, we evaluated Nitzschia, together with Chaetoceros and Isocrysis, as food for the oyster. Wet weights, lengths, widths, glycogen contents, and growth rates in terms of wet weight of the oysters in all the feeding treatments were significantly higher than those in the non-feeding treatment. The highest glycogen content (2.34%) and growth rate (2.21 g month−1) were found in the Chaetoceros treatment. Growth rate in the Isocrysis treatment (1.63 g month−1) was also high, although glycogen content in this treatment (0.41%) was low. In the Nitzschia treatment, growth rate of the oyster (0.94 g month−1) was the lowest and glycogen content (0.83%) was also low relative to that in the Chaetoceros treatment. Chlorophyll a concentration in fecal pellets was lowest in the Nitzschia treatment (<2.7 μg mg−1), suggesting more complete digestion of Nitzschia by the oyster. Thus, Nitzschia was edible and digestible but not assimilated by P. fucata. We propose the following scenario for the relationship between Nitzschia dominance and mass mortality. When Nitzschia dominates in a culture area, the physiological condition of P. fucata deteriorates due to low assimilation of Nitzschia by the oyster, followed by susceptibility of the oyster to infection by agents lethal to the oyster.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of natural zooplankton versus rotifers and the effect of prey size on the growth and survival of cod larvae. At 20 days post hatch (DPH) myotome height, standard length and dry mass were significantly higher in larvae fed zooplankton compared to those fed rotifers. The dry mass at age 25 DPH was 135 μg (±45), 331 μg (±114), 391 μg (±121) for larvae fed rotifers, small size and large size plankton, respectively. At 25 days post hatch, the survival rates were 41.8% (±10.5), 90.7% (±2.3) and 91.4% (±1.7) for larvae reared on rotifers, small size and large size plankton, respectively. The limited growth and survival of cod larvae reared on rotifers were not mainly caused by the small size of rotifers. Large differences in skin coloration between larvae in the rotifer group and the two zooplankton groups were observed, probably caused by the large difference in astaxanthin levels in rotifers and natural zooplankton. We suggest that the nutritional composition of rotifers is a limiting factor for cod larvae growth and survival.  相似文献

The relative acceptability and suitability of naturally occurring pond organisms identified as likely natural food items for juvenile freshwater prawn, Macrobrachiurn msenbergii, were evaluated under controlled conditions. The potential of direct consumption of materials used as organic pond fertilizer (distillers dried grains with solubles [DDGS] was also evaluated. Growth and survival of prawn fed gastropods, oligochaetes, zooplankton, or DDGS were compared with those fed a nutritionally-complete pellcted diet (control). Groups of five juvenile prawn (average weight 1.66 ± 0.10 g) were stocked into eighteen 7.5-L glass aquaria. Dietary treatments were evaluated in triplicate aquaria for 21 days. Prawn fed live zooplankton exhibited a significantly higher rate of weight gain (P < 0.05) than drawn in other treatments, as measured by differences in slopes of regression lines for weight gain over time. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) in rates of gain for prawn fed a complete diet and those fed DDGS or gastropods. Prawn fed oligochaetes grew significantly slower (P < 0.05) than those fed the prepared diet. Results indicate that juvenile prawn as large or larger than 2g can utilize live zooplankton and that DDGS may be consumed directly by prawn. Thus, DDGS may serve a dual role as a feed and pond fertilizer. Additional research in pond management strategies that maximize zooplankton and gastropod numbers and the potential of DDGS as a combination food/fertilizer in freshwater prawn production ponds should be conducted.  相似文献

An experiment was performed to evaluate the responses of naturally occurring populations of plankton and benthos to applications of inorganic fertilizer and commercial marine ration in a shrimp grow-out facility near Angleton, Texas. Ten ponds were stocked with an average of 17,000 post-larval Penaeus stylirostris on July 8, 1980. Three of these ponds received fertilizer 19 days before stocking and again 7 days after stocking. Another 3 ponds were fed daily with Ralston Purina Experimental Marine Ration 20 beginning on the stocking day. Three other ponds received the 2 fertilizer applications and daily feed. One control pond was not given fertilizer or feed. Beginning 19 days before stocking and continuing for 14 weeks, samples were collected and quantitatively analyzed for chlorophyll, zoo-plankton and benthic organisms. Results indicated that fertilizer stimulates the production of chlorophyll and planktonic copepods. Planktonic rotifers varied independently of feed or fertilizer. Densities of planktonic polychaete larvae seemed to be related to changes in the populations of benthic adult polychaetes. The benthic community was dominated by polychaetes, harpacticoid copepods and nematodes. Polychaetes tended to be more abundant when feed was present. Harpacticoids and nematodes did not seem to be affected by experimental treatments. All benthos fell to very low densities after 50 days of the study. The best shrimp production occurred in feed and fertilized ponds, followed by feed only, fertilizer only and the control. Potential linkages between natural production and shrimp growth are discussed.  相似文献

Due to the tonic and nutritive virtues of sea cucumbers, increased commercial aquaculture has resulted in the expansion of breeding ponds, a primary form of sea cucumber production. Expansion of such production methods has led to increased settling of organic wastes onto the seabed, resulting in enriched sediments. Nitzschia sp. serves as an edible sea cucumber feed. Release characteristics of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from sediments in the presence of different biomass densities of Nitzschia sp. were studied via laboratory static cultures. pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) in the overlying water and biochemical components (i.e., protein, chlorophyll a) of Nitzschia sp. were assessed. When the biomass of Nitzschia sp. was more than (2–5) × 104 ind/cm2, the release of N and P nutrients was significantly promoted; additionally, the DO content of the overlying water was relatively high and the pH was relatively stable, which favoured the accumulation of proteins and chlorophyll a in Nitzschia sp. The results indicated that Nitzschia sp. promotes the release of N and P in sediments while absorbing them to maintain their own growth and promote the accumulation of nutrients, such as proteins, for the sea cucumbers. At the same time, the algae release oxygen, increasing the DO of the overlying water, providing a healthy breeding environment for the sea cucumbers. Application of Nitzschia sp. has the potential to reduce environmental harm caused by sea cucumber cultivation and thus achieve sustainable aquaculture.  相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the feeding behaviour (particularly gut fullness and evacuation, preying on rotifers and feeding preference in the water column) of the calanoid copepod, Pseudodiaptomus hessei, as a potential live feed species for aquaculture. Fed and starved, male and female P. hessei were fed rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) in the presence and absence of microalgae for 24 hr. Starved copepods consumed more rotifers (11.31 ± 1.01, individual rotifers) than fed (8.06 ± 1.01, individual rotifers) while the number of rotifers consumed in the presence of microalgae was similar when fed or starved. Gut fullness and evacuation was determined by feeding copepods two different cell size microalgae species (Tetraselmis suecica and Isochrysis galbana). Gut fullness and evacuation percentage were observed under the dissecting microscope (as 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%). Copepods fed on T. suecica (large cell) filled their guts more rapidly, while those fed on I. galbana (small cell) evacuated their guts faster. Feeding preference was determined using a multifactorial experiment where copepods were fed two microalgae species, T. suecica and I. galbana, each presented as benthic and planktonic food sources. P. hessei preferred to feed on planktonic microalgae first regardless of microalgae choice species for ±80 min, before shifting to benthic food source. This information can be used as baseline information for aquaculturists to rear the species as live feed for marine fish larvae.  相似文献

This study analyses the combined effects of organic and inorganic fertilization and of feeding with pellets on fish performance and water quality in a polyculture of common carp. Cyprinus Carpio L., silver carp. Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Val.), grass carp. Ctenopharyngodon idella (Val.) and hybrid tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus L. x O. aureus Stetndachner. Experiments included six treatments, which are combinations of inorganic fertilisation (daily or fortnightly), manuring (supplied or not), feed pellets (supplied or not) and density of phytoplanktivorous fish species (high-density treatments with 50% more hybrid tilapia and 300% more silver carp than low-density treatments). The effects of the management procedures on fish weight, growth, survival and yield. plankton abundance, water quality, and their complex interactions at the different levels of the natural food web were analysed. The hypothesis that daily fertilization should increase algal production, which in turn should sustain a higher density of phytoplanktivorous fish, proved to be correct within certain limits. Algal reproduction rate was higher under daily fertilization, pointing to better supply of food for herbivorous fish, while algal biomass was similar under both fertilization regimes, pointing to the utilization of that algal food supply. The increased algal food supply sustained a 50% density increase of the omnivorous tilapia, but not the 300% density increase of the grazer silver carp.  相似文献

Previously we reported that a significant level of domoic acid, a causative toxin for amnesic shellfish poisoning, was detected in bivalves belonging to a genus Spondylus from various tropical Asian countries. These findings indicate that causative plankton species for domoic acid widely distribute in these areas. In the present study, we monitored seasonal change of domoic acid level of Spondylus versicolor in association with that of plankton samples in Nha Phu Bay, Khanh Hoa, Vietnam from December 2004 to October 2005. The toxicity of S. versicolor showed distinct seasonal variation. During the period when domoic acid level of S. versicolor was increasing, a significant level of domoic acid was detected in the plankton samples, showing the correlation between these two parameters. These findings show that plankton causative for domoic acid occurred in the bay, and S. versicolor accumulate domoic acid during a bloom of the toxic plankton by food web transfer.  相似文献

Four experiments were conducted in order to determine the optimum dosageof Azotobacter chroococcum vis-a-vis organic fertilizer(cow-dung) required for optimum pond productivity. Hydrobiological parameters ofpond water, Azotobacter survival (viable counts), netprimary productivity (NPP) and fish growth were monitored. Studies have revealedthat irrespective of the treatments, dissolved oxygen (DO) levels weresignificantly (P < 0.05) lowered on inoculating the ponds withAzotobacter. Alkalinity, O-PO4,NO3-N, turbidity, NPP, plankton population and fish growth weresignificantly (P < 0.05) enhanced in ponds inoculated withAzotobacter @ 100.0 ml pond–1w–2 in combination with cow-dung @ 10000 kgha–1 y–1. At higher or lower dosages offertilizers, the values in most of these parameters remained low. On the otherhand, total kjeldahl nitrogen and NH4-N increased continuously. Ingeneral, viable bacterial counts decreased with increase in pH, however, therate of nitrogen fixation was not affected. Multivariate analysis of the data revealed a significantpositive correlation of nutrients (Total kjeldahl Nitrogen, NO3-N andO-PO4), with NPP and plankton populations. NH4-N, however,showed a significant negative correlation with DO, NPP and plankton populations.Highest fish biomass and SGR also coincided with the highest NPP and planktonpopulations, revealing that a dose of 100.0 ml pond–1w–2 (for 25 m3 ponds) ofAzotobacter along with 10000 kg ha–1y–1 of cow-dung appears to be optimum for obtainingoptimum pond productivity and fish yield. Nutrients in the sediment(NO3-N and O-PO4) also followed similar trend. On theother hand, organic carbon increased continuously with each increase in thedosage of fertilizers. A decline in fish biomass and pond productivity at higherfertilizer dosages has been attributed to low DO, high NH4-N and BOD.  相似文献

Effects of three diets: (1) complete diet; (2) supplemental diet (vitamin and mineral supplements not added); and (3) the supplemental diet with an adjunct organic fertilization regimen (using distiller's dried grains with solubles [DDGS]) on benthic macroinvertebrate populations and water quality in experimental ponds used to culture freshwater prawns, Macrobrachium rosenbergii were investigated. Benthic samples were taken from deep (1.5 m) and shallow (1.0 m) areas of each of nine 0.02-ha ponds every three weeks, using a 0.09-m2 Ekman dredge. The abundance of gastro-pods, oligochaetes, total non-insects, chironomids, total dipterans, total insects, and total macroinvertebrates was significantly higher (P <0.05) in ponds receiving the complete diet, possibly due to lower predatory pressure by prawns or direct benefits of micronutri-ents. Total macroinvertebrate abundance was significantly decreased (P <0.05) in ponds receiving supplemental diet (with and without organic fertilization), possibly due to increased predation by prawns to supplement the nutrition not provided by the lower quality diet. Organic fertilization significantly increased (P <0.05) the abundance of oligochaetes and total macroinvertebrates. These data suggest that M. rosenbergii can adjust to reduced feed quality by increasing consumption of benthic fauna.  相似文献

In the present study, the effects of selenium (Se) enrichment on the rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis, were investigated. Based on the results of six Se treatments obtained from triplicate experiments, we found that the efficiency of bioaccumulation by Se from non‐acid‐soluble sources was 62‐fold greater than that from acid‐soluble sources (Se‐Chlorella 15.6 ± 1.81% vs. selenite 0.25 ± 0.03%). However, supplementation of both acid‐soluble Se at low concentrations (≤40 µg per thousand rotifers) and Se‐Chlorella enhanced rotifer lifespan, increased the rate of spawning, inhibited lipid peroxidation, decreased levels of intracellular oxidization products and maintained the stability of mitochondrial membranes. These positive effects were correlated with the activities of antioxidant enzymes (e.g. catalase‐ and guaiacol‐dependent peroxidase) which increased along with the low Se concentrations (<80 µg per thousand rotifers). In contrast, the opposite effects were found when the rotifers were exposed to high Se concentrations (≥80 µg per thousand rotifers). The antioxidation and toxicity effects appeared to be correlated with the levels of total Se bioaccumulation. Above all, selenite, which is more toxic than Se‐chlorella, is less readily accumulated and biologically active. Se‐enriched rotifers fed by Se‐Chlorella are a fish larvae food supplement in aquaculture.  相似文献

Four different fertilization frequencies, namely twice per week, once per week, twice a month and once a month, were used in ponds to assess their effects on nutrient release, pond productivity and fish biomass. All ponds received the same total fertilizer inputs during the experimental period of 60 days (cow dung 208.3 kg ha?1 week?1, TSP 9.8 kg ha?1 week?1, urea 6.0 kg ha?1 week?1). Studies have revealed that the highest values of fish biomass, specific growth rate (SGR), net primary productivity (NPP), plankton population and nutrients were observed in the ponds that were fertilized twice a month. A strong and significant correlation of fertilization frequency was observed with dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), alkalinity, nutrient release, NPP, plankton density (no. L?1), fish biomass and SGR. The linear relationship between NPP and fish biomass/SGR for all the ponds was strong (r2= 0.88). Sediment chemistry revealed that O‐PO4, NO3‐N, organic carbon and electrical conductivity (EC) increased significantly (P<0.05) with a decrease in the frequency of fertilization, while alkalinity and calcium were high in ponds that were fertilized twice a month.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the survival and growth of Arapaima gigas larvae reared in slightly salinized water. Pirarucu larvae (183.1 ± 41.2 mg and 3.4 ± 0.3 cm) were stocked in PVC tanks (20 L; n = 4; 40 larvae per tank) in a static system. A. gigas larvae were reared in increasing levels of salinized water (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4‰) for a period of 15 days. Fish were fed six times a day with Artemia nauplii (2,900 nauplii per larvae per meal in the beginning). The salinized water increased by at least four times the Artemia nauplii lifespan, which prolonged the time of live food supply to Arapaima larvae. Pirarucu larvae kept in freshwater presented the lowest values in weight gain, final weight and survival. Larvae reared in water with 4‰ of salinized water showed the highest final weight. Slightly salinized water enhances the growth and survival of A. gigas larvae and it can be a simple practice with low cost that can be applied in the routine of pirarucu larviculture.  相似文献

A minimally invasive surgical technique (MIST) for the removal of ovulated eggs from Persian sturgeon Acipenser persicus was tested on broodstocks caught from the wild to determine whether it affected fecundity or hatching rates compared with the traditional stripping method of killing and removing the eggs (commonly used in hatchery). Morphological parameters of females, germinal vesicle (GV) position, weight of obtained egg, number of eggs/gram, fertilization rate, and percentage of hatching during incubation were not significantly different between the MIST and traditional stripping methods. Obtained ova were 4.8 ± 0.4 kg female−1 in the MIST and 4.6 ± 0.5 kg female−1 in traditional stripped groups, respectively; the fertilization rate was 83.4 ± 11.2% and 80.0 ± 7.2% in groups, respectively. The results of this study showed that the minimally invasive surgical technique approach is efficient, practical, and less stressful to Persian sturgeon broodstocks during artificial propagation than other reported egg collection procedures.  相似文献

In hatcheries, meagre Argyrosomus regius larvae still depend on an adequate supply of rotifers and Artemia, as no artificial diet can totally fulfil their nutritional requirements. However, production of live feed is highly expensive and demands intensive labour and specific facilities. This study investigated the effect of a dietary regime without the use of rotifers, to simplify the meagre larval rearing protocol. Two feeding treatments (T1 & T2) are compared to investigate their effects on survival and growth of meagre larvae. In T1, larvae were fed rotifers from 2 to 5 days post hatch (dph), and Artemia from 4 to 15 dph. In T2, larvae were kept under dark conditions and fed Artemia from 6 to 15 dph. Standard larval length (SL) was significantly higher in T1 (p < .01) until 8 dph in comparison with larvae reared initially without rotifers. No significant difference in SL was found among treatments (= .187) at 15 dph. Significant difference was found among treatments in survival rate at 15 dph (p < .003). The survival rate observed at 15 dph in T2 (30 ± 4.2%) represents an important finding, although the highest survival rate was observed in T1 (45.0 ± 3.4%). This study showed that it is possible to conduct larval rearing of meagre without using rotifers. Nevertheless, further research efforts are still needed to improve these results in comparison with the common larval rearing protocol.  相似文献

Using different sources of nitrogen as fertilizers in nursery ponds may affect water quality and plankton responses. We evaluated water quality variables and plankton population responses when using different nitrogen sources for catfish nursery pond fertilization. We compared calcium nitrate (12% N), sodium nitrite (20% N), ammonium chloride (26% N), ammonium nitrate (34% N) and urea (45% N) in 190‐L microcosms at equimolar nitrogen application rates. Sodium nitrite‐fertilized microcosms had higher nitrite and nitrate levels during the first week; no other differences in the water quality were detected among fertilizer types (P>0.05). No differences in green algae, diatoms or cyanobacteria were detected among treatments; desirable zooplankton for catfish culture was increased in urea‐fertilized microcosms. Based on these results, any form of nitrogen used for pond fertilization should perform similarly without causing substantial water quality deterioration. Ammonium nitrate and urea contain a higher percentage of nitrogen, requiring less volume to achieve dosing levels. If both urea and ammonium nitrate are available, we recommend using the one with the least cost per unit of nitrogen. If both types of fertilizer have an equal cost per unit of nitrogen, we recommend using urea because of the potential advantage of increasing desirable zooplankton concentrations.  相似文献

The culture‐based fishery of Liangzi Lake, Yangtze River Basin, established in 1992, yielded 2,652 t/year (±167) between 2005 and 2015, dominated by stocked carps [Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Val.) and Hypophthalmichthys nobilis (Richardson)] and mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis (Milne Edwards), accounting for 53% and 23% of the production and 20% and 52% in value, respectively. The lake had a macrophyte cover dominated by Vallisneria natans (Lour.) Hara with a cumulative biomass of 10,647 g/m2 that disappeared after a major flood in 2010 and changed its ecology. Management changes in stocking strategies introduced in the post‐flood period enabled the culture‐based fishery to maintain viability and sustainability to combat the major ecological change in the lake. The stocked species contributed significantly to nutrient removal of 24.71 ± 5.12 t/yr and 6.29 ± 0.87 t/yr of total nitrogen and total phosphorus, respectively.  相似文献

Striped trumpeter have a complex and extended larval phase and are difficult to culture. Two experiments were conducted in replicated, 300-l hemispherical tanks to determine if larval survival, growth, bacterial or fatty acid profile were improved by feeding non-enriched rotifers or rotifers enriched with algae or commercially available products, as well as the effect of an antibiotic, oxytetracycline (OTC). Larvae were stocked at 25 l 1 and 15 l 1 and reared until Day 16 and Day 19 in Experiments 1 and 2, respectively. In Experiment 1, the feeding treatments were non-enriched rotifers, or rotifers enriched on algae, DHA Selco (a fish oil based emulsion) or RotiMac (dried Schizochytrium). There were no significant differences in mean survival (± SD) across treatments, which were generally low at 14.6 ± 5.2%. Larvae reared on rotifers fed DHA Selco and RotiMac, had significantly higher proportions of incorporated DHA but no significant increase in growth. In Experiment 2, larvae were fed rotifers enriched on DHA Selco or AlgaMac 2000 and reared with or without the daily addition of 25 mg l 1 OTC. At Day 19, there was significantly higher survival for larvae reared on AlgaMac 2000 and OTC, (37.4 ± 5.6%), than DHA Selco and OTC, (16.0 ± 7.4%), AlgaMac 2000 without OTC (7.0 ± 8.0) and DHA Selco without OTC (3.3 ± 1.2). Larvae reared with OTC were larger (279 ± 58 μg and 7.4 ± 0.2 mm) than without OTC (177 ± 40 μg and 6.3 ± 0.2 mm). The addition of antibiotics did not significantly influence fatty acid profiles of larvae. There were no significant differences in the percentage of DHA, 27.6 ± 2.8%, EPA 4.6 ± 1.0% or ARA 4.9 ± 0.4%. Larvae reared with OTC had significantly less ‘grey gut’ (a measure of intestinal dysfunction). The results indicated that bacterial infection was a major source of mortality in striped trumpeter larvae and compromised larval growth. Assessment of the bacterial flora indicated that antibiotic use reduced the bacterial load, but did not eliminate potential pathogens. Our study suggests that microbial control has a greater influence than lipid nutrition on the survival and growth of larvae during the rotifer feeding stage.  相似文献

A grow‐out monoculture experiment for rohu, Labeo rohita was conducted for 1 year in nine earthen ponds of 0.04 ha each to study the impact of varied frequency of nitrogen fertilization on fish growth. Ponds were stocked at 8000 fingerlings ha?1 density. While ponds were applied with cattle manure and phosphate fertilizer at conventional dosages followed for grow‐out carp culture, nitrogen fertilization was carried out at 15‐, 10‐ and 7‐day intervals and were designated as treatments T‐1, T‐2 and T‐3 respectively. Although all the water parameters in the treatments were within the suitable range for grow‐out carp farming, annual average concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO), plankton as well as availability of nutrients such as total ammonia‐ and nitrate‐nitrogen in ponds were significantly higher in T‐3 compared with T‐1 and T‐2. Greater fluctuation of critical parameters like DO, plankton concentration and total ammonia nitrogen were observed in T‐1 and T‐3 while the same were more consistent in T‐2, revealing the prevalence of a better growing environment in the latter. Fish in T‐2 also showed better specific growth rate, higher body weight attainment and higher biomass yield compared with the other two treatments, revealing the desirability of nitrogen fertilization at 10‐day intervals in carp culture.  相似文献
