Isolation of Leptospira interrogans serovar bratislava from sows in Iowa   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Leptospira interrogans serovar bratislava was recovered from 2 of 10 sows examined from an Iowa slaughterhouse. Isolations were made from the kidney and genital tract of each sow. Serovar bratislava is not included in vaccines because it has not been previously isolated in the United States.  相似文献

The clinical signs, laboratory findings, diagnosis, epidemiology, treatment, and prevention and control of two emerging causes of placentitis and abortion in horses are described in this article. Leptospirosis has been reported as a significant cause of fetal loss in horses in Kentucky, Northern Ireland, and England. Most abortions result from infection by serovars kennewicki or bratislava. Nocardioform placentitis has become the most common cause of placentitis in central Kentucky horses. Nocardioform placentitis is associated with infection by unnamed, gram-positive, filamentous, branching bacteria, and is characterized by distinctive changes in the placental membranes.  相似文献

Leptospira interrogans serovar bratislava was isolated from a herd of swine in Iowa with a history of stillborn and weak neonatal pigs. Placentas, kidneys, and lungs of stillborn and weak pigs from 3 litters were processed to detect leptospires by use of bacteriologic culture and fluorescent antibody testing. Sera from stillborn and weak pigs were tested to detect agglutinating antibody against leptospires. A low antibody titer against L interrogans serovar bratislava was detected in the sera of stillborn and weak pigs. Small numbers of leptospires were sometimes detected in tissues by use of the fluorescent antibody test. Serovar bratislava was isolated from placentas, stillborn pigs or weak pigs from each of the 3 litters.  相似文献

Leptospirosis in horses in Ontario.   总被引:6,自引:1,他引:5       下载免费PDF全文
Sera from Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses in southwest Ontario were tested for antibody to seven Leptospira interrogans serovars (autumnalis, bratislava, canicola, grippotyphosa, hardjo, icterohaemorrhagiae, pomona), using the microscopic agglutination test. There was significantly higher seroprevalence of bratislava than of other serovars, in which prevalence was low. Seroprevalence of bratislava increased significantly with age; only 5% of two to three year old horses had titers greater than or equal to 1:80 compared to 52% of horses older than seven years. Eight of 16 foals from two farms seroconverted at low titers to bratislava between four and eight months of age. Leptospires were not detected by immunofluorescence and isolation techniques in 50 kidneys collected from horses at slaughter. Fetal tissues from 52 aborted horse fetuses were also examined by these methods and serovar kennewicki was identified by immunofluorescence and by isolation in one fetus. Serovar bratislava appears to be widespread in horses in Ontario but unimportant in abortion. The clinical significance of this infection in horses in Ontario is unclear.  相似文献

Prevalence of Leptospira infection in aborted pigs in Northern Ireland   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
During an investigation of pig abortions and stillbirths in Northern Ireland, leptospires were isolated from 55 of the 78 litters examined. Strains belonging to four serogroups (Australis, Icterohaemorrhagiae, Hebdomadis and Autumnalis) were recovered but leptospires of the Australis serogroup accounted for 91 per cent of the isolates. Two serovars of the Australis group bratislava and muenchen, were identified.  相似文献

Five strains of Leptospira interrogans isolated in the United Kingdom and belonging to the Pomona serogroup were subjected to cross-agglutination absorption and bacterial restriction endonuclease DNA analysis (BRENDA) for their identification. British isolates were compared with reference strains representing the known serovars in the Pomona serogroup and also with isolates of the Pomona serogroup obtained from other countries. Three strains isolated from wildlife in England produced equivocal results when the cross-agglutination absorption and BRENDA results were compared. According to the World Health Organisation definition of a serovar the three English strains represented two new serovars, whereas by BRENDA all three had DNA electrophoresis patterns indistinguishable from serovar mozdok. Serovar pomona has not as yet been isolated in Great Britain and the epidemiology of the Pomona serogroup infections that have been detected by serology suggests that a serovar such as mozdok, maintained by wildlife, may be the causal agent. Two strains isolated in Northern Ireland were identified as pomona by the cross-agglutination absorption test. Further studies are needed to investigate the homogeneity of field and reference strains that are designated as pomona using the cross-agglutination absorption test.  相似文献

In 1998, a total of 424 sows had sera collected in the Mekong delta in Vietnam. Of these, 283 sows were from 151 small-scale family farms in 19 villages, and 141 from seven large-scale state farms. The sera were subjected to the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) for antibodies to 13 Leptospira serovars. The overall leptospiral seroprevalence for titres > or =1:100 and > or =1:400, was 73 and 29%, respectively, and was higher (P=0.001) at small- than at large-scale farms. The highest seroprevalence was recorded for Leptospira interrogans serovar (sv) bratislava (52%). At small-scale farms, higher prevalences were found to serovars L. interrogans sv icterohaemorrhagiae (P=0.04) and L. interrogans sv pomona (P=0.02).Epidemiological information (at the individual-animal and herd-levels) was collected with a questionnaire. The data were analysed using logistic multiple regression. At the animal-level, sows seropositive for L. interrogans sv australis and sv autumnalis had less direct contact with sows in neighbouring pens (odds ratio (OR)=0.3 and 0.4, respectively) and sows seronegative for L. interrogans sv bratislava were of lower age (OR=0.1 for seropositivity). Also, sows seropositive for L. interrogans sv icterohaemorrhagiae had higher odds (OR=5.8) if they had not been born on the farm (had been introduced to it as gilts).Herds seropositive for sv javanica showed association with farms not taking measures to control the local rodent population (OR=7.8). Serovar pomona was also linked to the use of artificial insemination (AI), as opposed to natural-breeding services (OR=11.2).These results indicate that housing and management could affect the seroprevalence of Leptospira infection in pigs.  相似文献

Leptospires belonging to the Pomona serogroup were isolated from calves involved in two outbreaks of acute haemolytic disease which were characterised by jaundice, haemoglobinuria and high death rates. Retrospective case studies in which serological evidence of Pomona serogroup infection was found are also presented. Serovar pomona is the leptospire of the Pomona serogroup most commonly incriminated in clinical disease in domestic species, but the organisms isolated in this study were antigenically different to pomona and may represent a new serovar. The limited information available on the epidemiology of sporadic infection with leptospires of the Pomona serogroup in domestic species in the south west of England supports the contention that a serovar other than pomona is involved.  相似文献

Airborne Aujeszky's disease virus was recovered from looseboxes containing groups of pigs infected with virus strains from England, Northern Ireland and Denmark from days 1 to 7 after infection. Pigs sampled individually excreted most airborne virus on days 2 and 3 after infection. On a 24 hour basis the maximum amount of airborne virus excreted per pig was log10 5.3 TCID50. Subclinical infection was transmitted from a clinically affected group of pigs to a seronegative group held in separate looseboxes when air was drawn through ducting connecting one box with the other. Tissues taken from pigs killed at varying times after infection showed that the main sites of virus replication were in the head and neck region. Aujeszky's disease virus was detected for up to 40 days in a range of tissues taken from pigs at the acute stage of disease and stored at -20 degrees C.  相似文献

In 1985-1988, 993 serum samples of dogs from Southern Bavaria and 408 samples from Northern Bavaria and from several Lands of the Federal Republic of Germany were tested for antibodies against the serovars canicola, icterohaemorrhagiae, grippotyphosa, bratislava, pomona, saxkoebing, sejroe and hardjo by using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). 683 seras (48.75%) out of altogether 1401 samples showed a reaction against one up to seven serovars. The mostly low canicola- and icterohaemorrhagiae titers, having been proved in over 30% of the samples, can be put down to the fact, that usually the dogs had been vaccinated. Most frequently titers were found with the serovars grippotyphosa and bratislava--in Southern Bavaria 28.3%, in Northern Bavaria and other Lands of the Federal Republic of Germany 18.6%. The prevalence of titers against serovar saxkoebing, with or without a reaction against other serovars out of homologous and heterologous serogroups, reach up to 3.2% in sendings coming from Southern Bavaria and in other sendings up to 6.1%.  相似文献

A blind survey of 104 raw sheep and goats' milk samples (90 goat, 14 sheeps) from bulk tanks on farms throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland was carried out over a 5-month period (January-May 1998) in order to determine the incidence of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis. Each milk sample (100 ml) was divided into two 50ml portions. One portion was decontaminated with 0.75% hexadecylpyridinium chloride for 5h before culture on slopes of Herrold's egg yolk medium and in BACTEC radiometric medium. The second portion was subjected to immunomagnetic separation followed by IS900 PCR (IMS-PCR). The IMS-PCR assay was employed in order to provide a more rapid indication of the presence of M. paratuberculosis in each milk sample than is possible by culture. Information on the Johne's disease status of the sheep and goat herds that took part in the survey was not sought at the time of milk sampling. However, it subsequently emerged that at least some of the herds whose bulk milk was tested during this study were previously or currently infected with Johne's disease. Overall, during this survey one raw goats' milk sample tested positive for the presence of M. paratuberculosis by IMS-PCR (<1% of milk samples tested) but no viable M. paratuberculosis were isolated by culture. The results of this study suggest that bulk raw sheep and goats' milk from these regions of the UK may not represent significant vehicles of transmission of M. paratuberculosis to humans.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate gross, histopathologic, and serum biochemical findings caused by Leptospira interrogans serovars pomona and bratislava inoculated in dogs. ANIMALS: Twenty-seven 8-week-old female Beagles. PROCEDURE: Dogs were randomly assigned to challenge or control groups. Challenge groups were conjunctivally inoculated on 3 successive days with 5 x 10(7) L interrogans serovar pomona (n = 12) or serovar bratislava (11). Clinical signs were recorded throughout the experiment, and clinical pathology assays, bacteriologic culture, and necropsies (6 or 7 dogs necropsied at each time point) were done on postinoculation day (PID) 7, 10, 14, and 20. RESULTS: Infection could not be confirmed in any serovar bratislava-inoculated dog, and control dogs remained healthy throughout the experiment. Positive culture and fluorescent antibody test results were confirmed in 11 of 12 serovar pomona-inoculated dogs. Fever and lethargy starting at PID 7 were the most common clinical signs in serovar pomona-infected dogs. On day 10, gross lesions included multifocal renal and pulmonary hemorrhage and perirenal edema. Serovar pomona-inoculated dogs had histopathologic lesions including hepatitis, interstitial nephritis, and pneumonia at PID 7, 10, 14, and 20. Increases in BUN, anion gap, and bilirubin concentration occurred on PID 10, 14, and 20. Platelet counts in dogs with positive results of bacteriologic culture were decreased from baseline values on PID 10, 12, and 14. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Conjunctival inoculation with L interrogans serovar pomona resulted in a high rate of infection with concomitant hemorrhagic and inflammatory lesions of the kidneys, liver, and lungs.  相似文献

Swine herds suspected to be infected with Leptospira interrogans serovar bratislava were vaccinated with bacterins containing 5 or 6 leptospiral serovars in which serovar bratislava was the unique component. The principal diagnostic feature indicating an infection by this organism was demonstration of antibody against serovar bratislava in sera from stillborn pigs. For 1 breeding cycle after vaccination of herds on 3 farms, 255 of 266 (95.9%) sows and gilts given the 6-serovar bacterin farrowed. In contrast, 233 of 311 (74.9%) sows and gilts given the 5-serovar bacterin farrowed. These results, as evaluated by analysis of variance techniques, showed a significant improvement (P less than 0.01) in reproductive performance for groups vaccinated against serovar bratislava.  相似文献

In recent years in France, England, Wales, Denmark and the USA about 500 human infections occurred, which were caused by multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica Serovar (S.) Kentucky isolates displaying high-level resistance to fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, MIC > or = 4 mg/l). The responsible clone was referred to as ST198-X1.To determine whether this clone is also present in German S. Kentucky isolates, the National Reference Laboratory for Salmonella (NRL-Salm) at the BfR analyzed the trend of S. Kentucky isolates received over the past years. Since 2010 the first entries of highly ciprofloxacin resistant S. Kentucky isolates, especially from turkey meat products, were recorded. 15 isolates originating from animal or food as well as one human isolate displayed MIC values of > or = 8 mg/l to ciprofloxacin. Molecular biological typing methods showed the in Germany isolated S. Kentucky isolates to be identical to the clone described by Le Hello et al. (2011) and to carry a multidrug resistance conferring region (SGI1). Since fluoroquinolones are considered by the WHO in human and veterinary medicine as drugs of critical importance, this trend demands attention. The implementation of mitigation strategies for this highly resistant clone seems to be required.  相似文献

The added benefit of the national campaign in the Republic of Ireland to eradicate bovine warble flies using pour-on organophosphorus compounds annually, has been a significant reduction in the degree of pediculosis there compared to that in Northern Ireland. In Northern Ireland, only warbled cattle are dressed and the level of pediculosis was 72.8% compared to 56.2% in the Republic, 30.4% of 250 cattle examined in the former country had moderate to heavy infestation compared to 8.6% of 185 cattle examined in the latter. Four species of cattle lice were found and reported for the first time in both countries; these were Haematopinus eurysternus, Solenoptes capillatus, Linognathus vituli, and Bovicola bovis. The first named was far more common in Northern Ireland. Following the withdrawal of the national eradication scheme in the Republic in 1975, there are indications that pediculosis has increased in cattle. Of 100 adult cattle examined in the Republic in February, 1976, 19 had heavy infestations, whilst 78 were infested.  相似文献

Serology has been used to diagnose retrospectively types C and D outbreaks of botulism in cattle in Australia and this study has investigated whether the approach would be applicable in England and Wales. Three hundred sera from routine surveillance submissions in England and Wales were used as a negative control population. Some stored sera were available from a small number of clinical cases of botulism and 125 samples were collected from cohort groups of clinical cases in four new outbreaks of botulism. Three of these outbreaks were identified as being caused by type D Clostridium botulinum toxin. Sera were tested by antibody ELISA in laboratories in Australia and Germany. There was no increase in the proportion of animals seropositive to type C or D antibody in the botulism-associated cattle. The proportion of samples which were seropositive to type D antibodies was <2% in both the negative control and outbreak populations. It was concluded that single time serology is unlikely to be helpful for retrospective diagnosis of outbreaks of type D botulism in England and Wales.  相似文献

During a study on the improvement of selective media for the isolation of leptospires from clinical material, leptospires were isolated from the kidneys of a pig. Test material was cultured in EMJH-medium containing 0.4% rabbit serum and 3 inhibitory substances (Rifampicin 10 micrograms/ml, Amphotericin B 2 micrograms/ml, 5-Fluorouracil 100 micrograms/ml). The cultured leptospira-strain (Berlin 406) was identified to serogroup level using the cross agglutination method and it was further typed to serovar level by MAB's, factor analysis and restriction endonuclease analysis (REA). MAB typing of Berlin 406 gave an agglutination pattern profile typical of serovar bratislava. Factor serum identification clearly identified this strain as serovar bratislava. On REA examination, Berlin 406 gave a profile identical to that of the serovar bratislava type strain Jez Bratislava i.e. genotype B1. This is the first report of a confirmed isolate of Leptospira interrogans serovar bratislava from domestic animals in Germany. There exist a number of possibly important implications as this agent is being incriminated in the cause of clinical disease not only in pigs, but also in horses and dogs in other countries.  相似文献

The spread of antibody to Aujeszky's disease virus through a susceptible pig herd was monitored after the probable introduction of infection by a recently purchased boar. The infection spread slowly through the herd but no clinical signs of Aujeszky's disease were seen. The strain of virus isolated was designated NIA-6. It has been characterised by a series of experimental infections and extends the known range of virulence of isolates of Aujeszky's disease virus made in Northern Ireland. The strain caused no disease in four-week-old piglets and is therefore less virulent than other isolates from Northern Ireland pigs. However, it killed rabbits and a proportion of experimentally infected two-week-old piglets, which differentiates it from the avirulent bovine isolate (NIA-4).  相似文献

A Leptospira interrogans serogroup australis serovar lora infection in a stud farm is reported. During three successive years (1984-1986) clinical leptospirosis with a severe often rapid, fatal course was seen in 12 foals. Clinical examination revealed severe respiratory distress, depression and pyrexia. Other symptoms were diarrhea (2), jaundice (1), and an unsteady gait (1). Morphological characteristics of the disease were massive pulmonary haemorrhage and haemorrhagic-thrombotic or extracapillary glomerulonephritis with tubulonephrosis and interstitial oedema. In most foals high or increasing MAT titres to serovar bratislava were found; from one foal Leptospira interrogans serovar lora was isolated. Serological examination of all 56 mares at the farm (August 1986) revealed antibodies to serovar bratislava in 64 per cent of the animals. These findings support the idea that Leptospira interrogans serovar bratislava and closely related strains (in this study serovar lora) may be adapted to and maintained by the horse population.  相似文献
