1. Four experiments were carried out to study the effect of offering a 91.5 g/l solution of glucose, compared to tap water, on fluid intake, food intake and growth of individually-caged immature chickens of both layer and broiler strains. 2. Male chicks of an egg-laying strain were offered glucose solution or tap water from 27 to 62 d after hatching. There was no effect of glucose on fluid intake but it depressed food intake (P less than 0.01) to give equal total energy intakes for each treatment. Body weight gain was reduced (P less than 0.001) and carcase fat content increased (P less than 0.001) by the glucose to yield no difference to total carcase energy. 3. When birds were placed in a respiration chamber for two 23-h periods there was no effect of treatment on outputs of energy as faeces + urine or as heat. 4. Male broilers were offered glucose solution or tap water with diets containing either 150 or 195 g protein/kg from 20 to 55 d after hatching. With the low-protein diet glucose depressed food intake (P less than 0.01) but total energy intake and carcase energy were not significantly affected. With the high-protein diet glucose did not depress food intake but increased total energy intake and total body fat. 5. Layer and broiler chicks were offered either a choice of the low- and high-protein diets or a single diet intermediate in protein content, with glucose solution or tap water. With broilers total food intake was depressed by glucose, mainly by a reduced intake of the low-protein diet. Intake of neither diet by the layer chicks was significantly affected by glucose. 6. It is concluded that provision of extra energy in glucose solution depresses food intake when the resultant energy:protein ratio becomes limiting. With a higher protein diet, or with birds having lower protein requirements, glucose solution does not depress food intake and increased fat deposition occurs.  相似文献

Research findings and management recommendations typically emphasize responses of the "average" individual, yet more than half of the animals in a group may differ significantly from the mean regarding food preference and intake. The productivity of a herd may be adversely affected if animals differing from the mean are fed a uniform diet formulated to meet the needs of the "average" individual. We compared the intake and performance of beef calves offered a choice or no choice among foods. Diets consisted of ad libitum access to either a chopped, mixed ration of rolled barley (31.3%), rolled corn (31.3%), corn silage (15.5%), and alfalfa hay (18.9%) (n = 16 calves) or a choice among those foods offered individually (n = 15 calves). Averaged across the 63-d trial, the two groups did not differ in ratios of protein to energy ingested (43 vs 43 g CP/Mcal ME; P = 0.50), but preference for foods high in energy or protein varied markedly for animals fed free-choice: on d 21 they had protein:energy ratios higher than those of animals fed the mixed ration, on d 2 the ratios were equal, and on d 40 they had protein:energy ratios lower than those of animals fed the mixed ration. Throughout the trial, no two animals consistently chose the same ingredients, and none selected a diet similar to the nutritionally balanced mixed ration, yet each animal ate a diet adequate to meet its needs. Animals offered the mixed ration tended to eat more than animals offered a choice (109 vs 102 g/kg MBW/d; P = 0.10), but they did not gain at a faster rate (0.89 vs 0.92 kg/d; P = 0.65). Gain/unit of food consumed also was similar for both groups (0.09 vs 0.10 kg/kg; P = 0.38). However, food cost/day was higher for animals fed the mixed ration than for those offered a choice ($1.58 vs $1.36; P = 0.03). Consequently, cost/kilograms of gain was higher for the mixed ration than for the choice group ($1.84 vs $1.49/kg; P = 0.045). These findings suggest that 1) animals can more efficiently meet their individual needs for macronutrients when offered a choice among dietary ingredients than when constrained to a single diet, even if it is nutritionally balanced; 2) transient food aversions compound the inefficiency of a single mixed diet by depressing intake even among animals suited to that nutritional profile; and 3) alternative feeding practices may allow producers to efficiently capitalize on the agency of animals, thus reducing illness and improving performance.  相似文献

An investigation was made of the relationship between the water and food consumption of healthy and sick chickens. Using coccidiosis as a disease model, and uninfected chickens as healthy controls, male birds of an egg-production breed and males and females of a meat-production breed were found to have simultaneously reduced water and food intakes 4 days after infection with Eimeria acervulina or E. maxima, and from 4 to 6 days after infection with E. tenella. This phenomenon was associated with reduction of weight gains and poor food conversion ratios. Whether birds were healthy or sick, and regardless of the degree of reduction of dietary intake, there was a more or less constant relationship between their food and water consumption. The ratio of the weights of water and food consumed had a value of about 1.9, with a range of 1.1–2.4. It is concluded that neither water nor food has an advantage over the other as a vehicle for chemotherapy. 133 samples of food were investigated for comparison of a recent commercially available 1-2 test (Biocontrol) with a cultural standard method (non-selective pre-enrichment in buffered peptone water, selective enrichment in Rappaport-Vassiliadis-medium and selenite brilliant-green mannitol enrichment broth, inoculation on two selective agars) for presence of Salmonella. The 1-2 test showed in positive results an accuracy ("sensitivity") of 94.7% and in negative results an assurance ("specificity") of 97.9% and is therefore considered suitable for detection of Salmonella contaminated food.  相似文献

1. In 10 laying Brown Leghorn hens, hourly patterns of food and water intake followed each other closely, both throughout the day and in relation to oviposition time.

2. Only half the birds showed significant (P < 0.05) positive correlations between food and water intake on a daily basis, but all of them showed highly significant correlations on an hourly basis. However, on average, about 20% of both the daily and the hourly variation in water intake could be accounted for by variation in food intake, and vice versa.

3. Restricting the daily water supply of each bird to 90% of its ad libitum intake, for a period of 6 weeks, caused a predicted reduction in daily food intake with only 3 out of 10 birds, but a very precise reduction to the level predicted with the overall mean food intake of all the birds. This suggests that water restriction may be a good way of controlling the food consumption of groups of birds but not of individuals.

4. Although egg production did not differ significantly between the ad libitum and water restriction periods, it did decline in the second half of the restriction period, at a time when the birds were gaining weight. This appears to confirm the widely‐held view that water restriction cannot be used to control the body weight of laying birds without it first affecting egg production. It is concluded that water restriction has little or no practical application for layers, but may be of value for reducing the growth rate of young birds in order to delay sexual maturity.  相似文献

1. Four experiments were carried out to investigate the effects on growth, food conversion efficiency (FCE) and apparent diet digestibility, of wetting food before offering it to individually caged growing chickens.

2. Female broiler chicks (8/treatment) were given grower food ad libitum from 28–49 d of age either in the dry form or wetted with 2.0 kg water/kg air dry food, or wet food restricted to the same daily amount of dry matter as eaten by the dry‐fed birds. Ad libitum feeding of the wet food significantly increased food intake and body weight gain, compared to dry feeding, while weight gains of birds with restricted feeding of wet food were intermediate.

3. Experiments 2 and 3 studied the effects of the time interval between mixing the food with water and offering it to the birds. When pre‐soaking times of 0, 12 and 24 h were compared with dry food for male broilers (8/treatment) from 25 to 40 d all wet treatments increased body weight gains significantly, the best results coming from the zero soaking time, when DM digestibility was increased significantly from 677 to 714 g/kg. When restricted amounts of food were offered hourly for 8 h on each of 4 d, DM digestibility was significantly increased from 634 for dry food to 659 for that freshly mixed with water and 664 g/kg for that soaked for 1 h between mixing and offering.

4. In a factorial experiment with wet and dry food, either in the standard form or with added enzyme or 400 g/kg cornflour, there were significant positive effects on growth and FCE of broilers (7/treatment) attributable to enzyme and wetting, while cornflour significantly reduced growth. However, wet cornflour‐diluted food gave better growth than dry standard food. Wetting significantly increased the apparent digestibility of dry matter and protein while dilution with cornflour significantly reduced protein digestibility.

5. These results confirm those previously presented in terms of improved growth and FCE with wet feeding and demonstrate a large improvement in the proportion of the food absorbed from the digestive tract, of similar magnitude to the improvement in FCE. They also show that it is not necessary to pre‐soak food in order to attain the maximum effect.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the physiologic endocrine effects of food intake and food withholding via measurement of the circulating concentrations of acylated ghrelin, growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), glucose, and insulin when food was administered at the usual time, after 1 day's withholding, after 3 days' withholding and after refeeding the next day in healthy Beagles. ANIMALS: 9 healthy Beagles. PROCEDURES: Blood samples were collected from 8:30 AM to 5 PM from Beagles when food was administered as usual at 10 AM, after 1 day's withholding, after 3 days' withholding, and after refeeding at 10 AM the next day. RESULTS: Overall mean plasma ghrelin concentrations were significantly lower when food was administered than after food withholding. Overall mean plasma GH and IGF-I concentrations did not differ significantly among the 4 periods. Circulating overall mean glucose and insulin concentrations were significantly higher after refeeding, compared with the 3 other periods. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In dogs, food withholding and food intake were associated with higher and lower circulating ghrelin concentrations, respectively, suggesting that, in dogs, ghrelin participates in the control of feeding behavior and energy homeostasis. Changes in plasma ghrelin concentrations were not associated with similar changes in plasma GH concentrations, whereas insulin and glucose concentrations appeared to change reciprocally with the ghrelin concentrations.  相似文献

Fibre is generally considered to dilute food energy, alter intestinal transit time and promote satiety; however, in cats, conflicting results have been found. In this study, two insoluble fibres were evaluated in four feline diets: control (no added fibre); diet with 10% sugar cane fibre; diet with 20% sugar cane fibre; and diet with 10% cellulose. The experiment was conducted with 32 cats, eight animals per diet, over 42 days: 1–7 for diet adaptation; 8–14 for total collection of faeces for digestibility; 15–17 for fresh faeces collection for fermentation products measurements; 18–20 for gastrointestinal transit time determination; 21 and 37 to evaluate the pattern of food intake; and 22 and 42 to assess satiety. Means were compared by analysis of variance and orthogonal contrasts, and the pattern of food intake was compared by repeated‐measures analysis of variance (p < 0.05). The cats exhibited increased food intake after fibre addition to the diets (p < 0.05), achieving similar energy consumption. Cellulose and the two levels of sugar cane fibre reduced nutrient availability and energy digestibility, but only sugar cane fibre reduced fat digestibility (p < 0.05). Faecal output and the number of defecations per day increased with fibre inclusion (p < 0.05). Gastrointestinal transit time did not change with sugar cane fibre inclusion, but it was reduced with cellulose addition (p = 0.032). The pattern of food intake did not change, but cats fed fibre‐supplemented diets exhibited greater consumption of a challenge meal, increasing energy intake (p < 0.01) when exposed to a palatable, energy‐dense food.  相似文献

In order to study the regulation of food intake and correlated body energy metabolism, the effect of restricted feeding during the light period in female IVCS mice was investigated. Access to food and water was restricted (RF group) for 3 weeks only from 10:00 hr to 17:00 hr, and that in the control group remained ad libitum. After starting food restriction (day 1), mean food intake decreased to 10% of the control value, then rose sharply, over the next 3 days, to reach 70% of the control value. Then, it decreased gradually to about 50% of the control value and remained at this low level thereafter. There was no significant difference between mean body weights for the two groups. Feed-efficiency was considered, therefore, to be higher in the RF than in the control group. RF-treatment increased plasma corticosterone levels and decreased locomotor activity. However, the diurnal patterns of plasma corticosterone levels and locomotor activity observed suggest that the circadian rhythm, synchronized with the light-dark cycle, persisted during RF-treatment. These findings suggest that restricted feeding during the naturally inactive phase (light period) induces a decrease in food intake. Animals seem to adapt to underfeeding, at least partly, by increasing feed-efficiency and plasma corticosterone levels and decreasing locomotor activity.  相似文献

1. Individually caged growing chickens were offered a commercial grower food mixed with 1–5 to 225 times the weight of water and the effects, compared to giving the same food in air‐dry form, on food intake, body weight gain and carcase composition were investigated.

2. Male broilers (24) were given either a grower food in the air‐dry form with access to drinking water or the same food mixed with 2–0 parts of water (700 g water/kg of mixed food) with no drinking water from 28 to 49 d of age. From 49 to 63 d all birds were given dry food and drinking water and were then killed for carcase analysis. Food intake and weight gain were significantly increased during the wet‐feeding period, as was carcase protein but not abdominal or carcase fat at the end of the experiment.

3. Five male broilers were given each of 5 dietary treatments containing 0 (control), 1.5, 1.75, 2.0 and 2.25 times added water (640, 673, 700 and 723 g water/kg) from 28 to 49 d. Food intakes, body weight gains and carcase weights were significantly increased for all water additions compared with dry food, but there were no significant differences between different water additions.

4. Female broiler chicks responded to wet feeding (700 g water/kg) in a similar manner to males and the dry matter approximate digestibility was increased from 0.65 for the dry food to 0.73 for the wet.

5. Cockerels of an egg‐laying strain did not increase their intake of dietary dry matter when it was fed in the wet form (700 g water/kg), but there was a significant increase in body weight gain.

6. Male broilers were offered wet food (700 g water/kg) with or without access to drinking water. There was equal stimulation of food intake, growth and carcase weight with both wet‐feeding treatments.

7. Providing food mixed with sufficient water to give a porridge‐like consistency significantly increased weight gains in each of the five experiments and significantly improved food conversion efficiency in three of the five. It is not necessary to withold drinking water in order to obtain this effect.  相似文献

Although knowledge of the nutrient requirements of pet birds has increased a lot over the last few years, basic data on food and water intake and the energy requirements of nectarivorous species, such as lorikeets, are scarce. Thus, the aim of this study was to try to generate some of these data for lorikeets kept at maintenance. Determination of the daily maintenance energy requirement enables calculation of the daily ration and thus, the appropriate nutrient concentrations in order to maintain body weight. Investigations were carried out with six Goldie's lorikeets (GL; Trichoglossus goldiei: 40-50 g BW; 1-4 years) and six rainbow lorikeets (RL; Trichoglossus haematodus haematodus: 120-140 g BW; 1-12 years). Three of the most commonly used diets/foods (commercial 'lory soup'/apples/pollen: crude ash - 52.9/17.8/18.8; crude protein - 178/32.5/191; crude fat - 52.8/0.89/73.1; crude fibre - 17.9/40.5/30.4; starch - 139/not detectable/127; sugar - 522/859/418 g/kg DM; ME - 13.9/14.6/10.9 MJ/kg DM) were individually offered ad libitum. The measured dry matter (DM) intake (g/100 g BW) corresponded well to the values reported for granivorous bird species of similar body mass. Both lorikeet species achieved an apparent digestibility of organic matter of more than 90% for apples, approximately 82% for 'lory soup' and approximately 55% for pollen. The water content of the food affected the DM content of the excreta; 8% when fed 'lory soup', 2% for apples and approximately 30% when fed pollen. Regression analysis of body weight change relative to energy intake demonstrated constant body mass (assuming no change in body composition) when the daily energy intakes were 860 (GL) or 650 (RL) kJ ME/kg BW(0.75).  相似文献

The effects on food intake and weight gain of offering broiler chickens (2 to 7 weeks of age) dry food, wet food, wet food containing whey, whey as drinking liquid and combinations of two of these were studied in 5 experiments. 2. Wet feed generally improved both weight gain and feed efficiencies significantly. Feeding whey also improved weight gain and feed conversion efficiency, but whey offered as a drinking fluid had an adverse effect on broiler performance. 3. When whey was offered both as drinking liquid and added to the food it had a deleterious effect. 4. When whey was offered from 4 or 6 weeks of age, it had a better effect than when offered from 2 weeks of age. 5. There was better performance when whey in the drinking water was diluted and/or offered on alternate days or half-days. 6. Broilers allowed to choose between wet and dry feed when water was freely available chose mostly dry feed; in the absence of drinking water they chose mostly wet food. Birds offered water and liquid whey avoided whey completely. 7. It is concluded that whey can be used in diets for broiler chickens by incorporating it in the food as long as drinking water is offered ad libitum. Whey may be offered as a drink if the food is mixed with 1.8 times its weight of water but it is better to dilute the whey with an equal volume of water whether it is added to food or given as drink. Good results can also be obtained when undiluted whey is offered alternately with water, either in half-day or full-day periods.  相似文献

An in vitro evidence of IgE-mediated hypersensitivity to food allergens was detected by positive results of antigen-specific histamine release in dogs with food hypersensitivity. Eight dogs were diagnosed to have food hypersensitivity based on identification of offending food allergens with food elimination followed by oral food provocation. The percentages of histamine release against the stimulation of offending food allergens in the cases ranged from 2.1% to 70.9%. Six of the 8 cases showed histamine release higher than those of healthy control dogs. Four dogs showed relatively high histamine release at the percentage beyond 10% that was compatible with a positive value of histamine release in humans with food hypersensitivity. These findings would suggest that IgE-mediated hypersensitivity against food allergens could be involved in canine food hypersensitivity.  相似文献

1. Calorimetric measurements were made on 5‐week‐old male chickens sampled from the third generation of three lines selected for either increased live‐weight gain (W), food consumption (F), or food conversion efficiency (E). A control line (C) was also measured.

2. Food intake and food conversion ratio were greater (P<0.05) in the F line than in the E and C lines.

3. Metabolisability of the diet was 0.8% higher in the E line than in the other lines.

4. Metabolisable energy (ME) intake and heat production were greater (P<0.05) in the F line than in the E and C lines, and energy balance was greater (P<0.05) in the F than in the W and E lines.

5. During starvation, excreta energy and heat production were greater (P < 0.05) in the F than the other lines.

6. Availability of ME (net energy) was the same (85%) for all lines but calculated daily maintenance energy requirements (kJ ME/kgW) were W, 860; F, 937; E, 796 and C, 810.

1. The physiological and metabolic effects of a short term food restriction of broiler chickens at an early age and grown to 49 d of age were examined. 2. Fat accretion was measured by tritium dilution. Adipocyte characteristics of the fat tissue were examined by cell counting after fixation with osmium tetroxide and the metabolic effects of food restrictions were measured by closed-circuit respiration calorimetry. 3. The success of food restrictions in allowing full bodyweight recovery and producing decreases in body fat was associated with a negative energy balance and a positive nitrogen balance achieved during the restriction phase. 4. Food restrictions produced decreases in body fat possibly by causing a delay in adipocyte hyperplasia. Excess dietary energy was then lost as heat until adipocyte hyperplasia re-commenced allowing the bird to store surplus dietary energy as fat. 5. A food restriction that allows full bodyweight recovery and maximum carcase fat reduction in the broiler chicken at 49 d may not be appropriate for birds grown for longer periods.  相似文献

A study, based on data from the literature, was carried out to establish the quantitative effect of increasing levels of various fats on food intake, weight gain and efficiency of food conversion of growing chicks.

The fats concerned were soyabean oil, soyabean soapstock, maize oil, lard, grease and tallow. Their effect was studied by using regression analyses.

It was found that the addition of fat, both animal fats and vegetable oils, diminishes food intake. The food intake decreases significantly with rising percentages of fat according to a linear function. No differences in effect between various fats could be demonstrated.

The incorporation of various fats improves the weight gain, although the increase was not related to the amount of fat added. The improvement in weight gain differs from one fat to an other.

The addition of fats improves efficiency of food conversion, but varies according to the kind of fat. Here the improvement is correlated with the level of fat added.

The difference in improvement of food conversion can be only partially explained by differences in absorbability and metabolisable energy of the fats.

It is concluded that certain fats ameliorate the efficiency of food conversion and, in some cases, weight gain to a higher degree as may be expected from their metabolisable energy content. It might be possible that some fats possess one or more factors which improve the efficiency of metabolisable energy or exert a protein anabolic action.  相似文献

The relationship between water intake and water concentration in the body and in the gastrointestinal contents was studied in meat-type chickens fed either intermittently or ad libitum, as controls. In experiment 1, male broilers were reared from 12 to 33 d of age and were fed every second day or ad libitum. The water consumption of the intermittently-fed birds on days of food removal was 31% of the consumption of the control group. On days of food restoration their water consumption exceeded that of the controls, by 27%. No significant differences in water:food ratios were found between birds fed intermittently or the controls on days of food restoration. The restricted birds had a lower fat and a higher protein concentration in the body. No relationship was found between water:food ratio and body composition. In experiment 2, birds were kept on the same feeding regimes from 12 to 46 d of age. The water content of the pancreas increased after food restoration compared with ad libitum feeding or food deprivation. The amount of water in the gastrointestinal contents increased progressively from crop to ileum. The feeding regimens had no effect on the water content of the intestine.  相似文献

The proposal of National Research Council (NRC), based on the use of modified Atwater factors, is nowadays the widely used method to estimate digestible energy (DE) content of pet foods. Recently, alternative methods have been suggested for predicting energy content of commercial canine dry food. Factorial equations including food fibre content as estimator, in vitro digestions methods or near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) techniques have been considered as good approaches to predict the energy content of dog foods. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of some of those estimation methods. Seventeen samples of commercial extruded dog food were used to validate and compare some estimation methods of energy digestibility (Ed, %) and DE value [MJ/kg dry matter (DM)]. The apparent Ed and DE of each food were previously determined by in vivo trials. In vivo Ed and DE of foods ranged from 79.30% to 91.05% and from 16.25 to 21.82 MJ/kg DM, respectively, and their crude fibre (CF) content ranged from 0.72% to 3.28% (in DM base). The % Ed of each sample was estimated by the factorial equation (% Ed = 91.2 - 1.43 x CF %) and by the in vitro digestion method [% Ed(in vitro) = -2.45 + 0.98 organic matter (OM) disappearance(in vitro)%]. The set of samples also was analysed by NIRS, using a calibration equation developed from a set of 69 samples of commercial extruded dog food (0.76 and 0.89 cross-validation r(2) and 2.33 and 0.61 cross-validation SE for Ed and DE respectively). The in vitro method gave better estimations of Ed in vivo than NIRS and factorial methods, although all the methods assessed showed a very good and similar accuracy in the prediction of DE value. These three methods showed a slight better accuracy than that previously proposed by the NRC. To consider constant digestibility values of nutrient content of food can result in bias and error in the estimated energy values. The alternative prediction methods used in this study take into account differences of ingredient composition and availability of nutrients of different extruded dog foods thus could be better systems of valuating energy content in a wider range of different kind of foods than in use method.  相似文献

The current study was designed to examine the effects of intracerebroventricular injections of SHU9119 [a nonselective melanocortin receptor (McR) antagonist] and MCL0020 (a selective McR antagonist) on the serotonin-induced eating and drinking responses of broiler cockerels deprived of food for 24 h (FD24). For Experiment 1, the chickens were intracerebroventricularly injected with 2.5, 5, and 10 µg serotonin. In Experiment 2, the chickens received 2 nmol SHU9119 before being injected with 10 µg serotonin. For Experiment 3, the chickens were given 10 µg serotonin after receiving 2 nmol MCL0020, and the level of food and water intake was determined 3 h post-injection. Results of this study showed that serotonin decreased food intake but increased water intake among the FD24 broiler cockerels and that these effects occurred in a dose-dependent manner. The inhibitory effect of serotonin on food intake was significantly attenuated by pretreatment with SHU9119 and MCL0020. However, the stimulatory effect of serotonin on water intake was not altered by this pretreatment. These results suggest that serotonin hypophagia and hyperdipsia were mediated by different mechanisms in the central nervous system, and that serotonin required downstream activation of McRs to promote hypophagia but not hyperdipsia in the FD24 chickens.  相似文献
