Methods for the measurement of plasma or serum triglyceride concentrations usually quantify the glycerol released by enzymatic hydrolysis of the triglyceride molecule. Any free glycerol in the sample is measured erroneously as triglyceride in these methods. As miniature swine have been used commonly for comparative studies of plasma lipoprotein lipids, this study was conducted to assess the need for free glycerol correction of plasma triglyceride measurements by comparing glycerol-blank corrected and non-corrected total plasma triglyceride concentrations from fasted minipigs. Fasting plasma free glycerol concentrations range from 9 to 14 mg/dl. The mean +/- SD (n = 16) glycerol-blank corrected total plasma triglyceride value (77 +/- 8 mg/dl) was significantly (p < 0.001) less than the uncorrected measurement value (189 +/- 12 mg/dl). Poor correlation (r = 0.24) between corrected and uncorrected total plasma triglyceride measurements suggests that mathematic correction by a constant correction factor would yield inaccurate results for miniature swine. Free glycerol blanking is essential for determination of the true total plasma triglyceride concentration.  相似文献

The Incstar(R) SPQ II human haptoglobin (Hpt) (Incstar Corporation, Stillwater, MN) immunoturbidimetric assay was validated for the determination of serum and plasma Hpt concentrations in dogs and horses. The anti-human Hpt antiserum supplied with the assay, displayed monospecificity to both dog and horse serum Hpt by immunoelectrophoresis and Western blotting techniques. The automated immunoturbidimetric assay results correlated well with the cyanmethemoglobin binding assay (r=0.953 for canine serum and r=0.941 for equine serum), and had excellent precision at both high and low serum Hpt concentrations (within run and between run coefficients of variation near or less than 5%). The assay was linear in both species by serial dilution of pooled-high serum with pooled-low serum, saline and with Hpt-free serum. Interference from hemolysis (> 25 mg/dl hemoglobin) and lipemia greater than 100 mg/dl caused a false decrease and false increase respectively in Hpt yield with the immunoturbidimetric assay. The anti-Hpt antibody supplied with the assay kit, once diluted with polymer diluent and stored at 4 degrees C, was stable for up to 6 days and gave consistent results.  相似文献

The relationship between ceruloplasmin, a metalloenzyme with oxidase activity, and copper was investigated in cattle and sheep. The oxidase activity of ceruloplasmin correlated closely with the serum or plasma copper concentrations in cattle. The respective correlation coefficients were 0.83 and 0.60. In sheep serum, a correlation coefficient of 0.92 was obtained. In each instance, the relationship remained linear from the deficient to the high normal ranges of copper. Comparison of the linear regression relationships indicated the ceruloplasmin activity in bovine serum was statistically lower than the activity in bovine plasma (P less than 0.0001), through the intercepts from the regression lines of the two relationships were similar (P = 0.412). Comparisons of ovine and bovine serum-ceruloplasmin relationships indicated that a significant species difference was present. Ovine ceruloplasmin activity increased more rapidly as compared to the corresponding bovine activity over the range of copper concentrations investigated (P less than 0.0001). The intercept from the ovine regression relationship was also lower (P less than 0.0001). A correlation coefficient of 0.35 was observed between the serum ceruloplasmin activity and hepatic copper concentrations in cattle indicating that the mathematical relationship was not as well defined. Ceruloplasmin activity appears to correlate more closely with serum or plasma copper concentrations as compared to corresponding liver copper concentrations.  相似文献

Ten horses, a pony, and 13 cats were used to evaluate base-line blood ammonia, bilirubin, and urea nitrogen concentrations and to determine The effects of prolonged cold storage (-20 degrees C) before assay. Base-line plasma ammonia concentrations in cats (0.992 +/- 0.083 [SE] micrograms/ml) did not change significantly after 48 hours of storage (0.871 +/- 0.073 micrograms/ml); however, they were increased 4.2- and 13-fold after 168 and 216 hours of storage, respectively. In contrast to base-line plasma-ammonia values in cats, those of horses were significantly (0.265 +/- 0.044 micrograms/ml) lower, and significantly increased from base-line values after 48 hours of storage (0.861 +/- 0.094 micrograms/ml) and continued to increase 25.6-fold at 168 hours and 18.4-fold at 216 hours. Plasma urea nitrogen concentrations in cats (25.8 +/- 1.06 mg/dl) and horses (11.2 +/- 0.749 mg/dl) did not change significantly during 168 hours of storage. Total plasma bilirubin values from both cats (0.19 +/- 0.049 mg/dl) and horses (0.75 +/- 0.064 mg/dl) also did not change significantly during storage. These results indicate that feline plasma samples for ammonia determinations may be stored at -20 degrees C for up to 48 hours, whereas equine plasma ammonia values tend to increase during that time. The reason for the increase remains unexplained. Both feline and equine plasma urea nitrogen and total bilirubin are stable for at least 168 hours of storage at -20 degrees C.  相似文献

Immunoglobulin G, IgM, and IgA concentrations were measured in serum collected from 36 Standardbred mares within 12 hours of foaling, in colostrum collected within 6 hours of foaling, and in serum collected from foals 24 to 48 hours after birth. In serum collected from mares after parturition, mean concentrations of IgG, IgM, and IgA were 2,463.9 +/- 1,337.3 mg/dl, 136.4 +/- 218 mg/dl, and 305.2 +/- 237.5 mg/dl, respectively. In serum from foals, mean concentrations of IgG, IgM, and IgA were 1,953.3 +/- 1,635 mg/dl, 33.8 +/- 30.4 mg/dl, and 58.4 +/- 42.2 mg/dl, respectively. In colostrum, mean concentrations of IgG, IgM, and IgA were 8,911.9 +/- 6,282.2 mg/dl, 957 +/- 1088.1 mg/dl, and 122.9 +/- 77.3 mg/dl, respectively. The IgG concentrations in foal serum were poorly correlated with IgG concentrations in colostrum (r = 0.462, P less than 0.01). Correlations of IgM or IgA concentrations in serum from foals with IgM or IgA concentrations in colostrum and correlations of IgG concentrations in serum from mares with those in colostrum were not significant (P less than 0.01). Of 36 foals, 1 (2.8%) had a serum IgG concentration less than 400 mg/dl. Of 36 foals monitored for 4 months, 6 developed infectious respiratory tract disease requiring antimicrobial therapy at ages varying from 55 to 113 days; these infections were probably not related to failure or partial failure of passive transfer of antibody.  相似文献

Experiments were performed to determine whether serum concentrations of total cholesterol (TC) undergo cyclic changes during the estrous cycle of dairy heifers and to assess the relationship between serum concentrations of TC and ovarian steroid hormones. The effects of a hypercholesterolemic diet upon luteal progesterone secretion also were determined. Experiment 1 involved five dairy heifers exhibiting normal estrous cycles. Serum concentrations of TC, progesterone, testosterone and estradiol-17 beta were determined in blood samples collected throughout a complete estrous cycle. A transient decline in TC was observed during the luteal phase of all heifers beginning on d 2 and reached a nadir 6 d after estrus. Highest mean concentrations of TC occurred between d -2 and +2 (96.3 +/- 8.2 mg/dl), which were markedly higher (P less than .05) than the lowest mean concentrations (76.3 +/- 10.3 mg/dl) observed on d 6. Concentrations of serum TC were negatively correlated (r = -.40; P less than .01) with progesterone between d 2 and 9. Serum TC was not correlated with testosterone or estradiol-17 beta. In Exp. 2, seven cycling Holstein heifers were fed a control diet for 70 d (Stage I), a diet containing 15% whole sunflower seed as a source of supplemental dietary lipid for 70 d (Stage II) and then the control diet for 70 d (Stage III). Forty-four Angus (n = 24) and Simmental (n = 20) steers, averaging 301 kg initially, were used to determine the effects of breed and Cu and Zn source (SO4 or proteinate (Prot) form) on Cu and Zn status of steers fed high dietary iron (Fe). Steers were stratified by weight within breed and randomly assigned to treatments. Treatments consisted of: 1) CuSO4 + ZnSO4 ,2) CuSO4 + ZnProt, 3) CuProt + ZnSO4, and 4) CuProt + ZnProt. Copper and Zn sources were added to provide 5 mg Cu and 25 mg supplemental Zn/kg DM. All steers were individually fed a corn silage-based diet supplemented with 1,000 mg Fe (from FeSO4)/kg DM. Liver biopsy samples were obtained at the beginning and end of the 149-d study. Serum samples were collected initially and at 28-d intervals for determination of ceruloplasmin activity and Zn and Cu concentrations. Copper and Zn source did not affect performance, serum or liver Cu and Zn concentrations, or ceruloplasmin activity. Copper status decreased (P < 0.01) in all steers with time, and increasing the level of supplemental Cu from 5 to 10 mg/kg DM on d 84 did not prevent further drops in serum Cu and ceruloplasmin. Simmental steers had lower (P < 0.05) serum and liver Cu concentrations, and serum ceruloplasmin activity throughout the study. These results indicate that neither CuSO4 nor CuProt were effective at the supplemental concentrations evaluated in alleviating the adverse effect of high Fe on Cu status. Simmental steers had lower Cu status than Angus, suggesting a higher Cu requirement.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to study the effects of different levels of dietary copper on copper and zinc balance, plasma minerals and serum biochemical parameters of mink in the growing-furring periods. One hundred and five standard dark male mink were randomly assigned to seven groups with the following dietary treatments: basal diet with no supplemental Cu(Control); basal diet supplemented with either 6,12, 24, 48, 96, or 192 mg/kg Cu from copper sulfate,respectively. The average daily gain(ADG) linearly(P = 0.0026, P = 0.0006) responded to increasing levels of Cu; maximal growth was seen in the Cu24 group. Feed efficiency tended to improve with the increase of dietary copper level(linear P = 0.0010, quad, P = 0.0011). Fecal copper, urinary copper, retention copper responded in a linear(P 0.05) fashion with increasing level of Cu. The effect of level of Cu was linear(P 0.001) for plasma Cu concentration. The serum glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase(GOT) and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase(GPT) activities were increased linearly(P 0.05) with dose of Cu, but serum total protein(TP) and albumin(ALB) concentrations decreased linearly(P 0.05) as dietary copper levels increased. Effect of level of Cu was linear(P 0.001) for serum ceruloplasmin(CER) concentration or Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase(Cu-Zn SOD) activity. Supplemental dose of Cu linearly decreased serum triglyceride(TG)(P = 0.011) and total cholesterol(TC)(P = 0.007). Our results indicated that the activity of Cu-dependent enzymes was enhanced by increasing dietary Cu concentration and that supplementation of Cu in the diet of mink could alter the plasma lipid profile and copper concentration.  相似文献

Sixty Angus (n = 29) and Angus-Sim-mental cross (n = 31) steers, averaging 9 mo of age and 277 kg of initial BW, were used in a 148-d study to determine the bioavailability of copper glycinate (CuGly) relative to feed-grade copper sulfate (CuSO(4)) when supplemented to diets high in S and Mo. Steers were blocked by weight within breed and randomly assigned to 1 of 5 treatments: 1) control (no supplemental Cu), 2) 5 mg of Cu/kg of DM from CuSO(4), 3) 10 mg of Cu/kg of DM from CuSO(4), 4) 5 mg of Cu/kg of DM from CuGly, and 5) 10 mg of Cu/kg of DM from CuGly. Steers were individually fed a corn silage-based diet (analyzed 8.2 mg of Cu/kg of DM), and supplemented with 2 mg of Mo/kg of diet DM and 0.15% S for 120 d (phase 1). Steers were then supplemented with 6 mg of Mo/kg of diet DM and 0.15% S for an additional 28 d (phase 2). Average daily gain and G:F were improved by Cu supplementation regardless of source (P = 0.01). Final ceruloplasmin, plasma Cu, and liver Cu values were greater (P < 0.05) in steers fed supplemental Cu compared with controls. Plasma Cu, liver Cu, and ceruloplasmin values were greater (P < 0.05) in steers supplemented with 10 mg of Cu/kg of DM vs. those supplemented with 5 mg of Cu/kg of DM. Based on multiple linear regression of final plasma Cu, liver Cu, and ceruloplasmin values on dietary Cu intake in phase 1 (2 mg of Mo/kg of DM), bioavailability of Cu from CuGly relative to CuSO(4) (100%) was 140 (P = 0.10), 131 (P = 0.12), and 140% (P = 0.01), respectively. Relative bio-availability of Cu from CuGly was greater than from CuSO(4) (P = 0.01; 144, 150, and 157%, based on plasma Cu, liver Cu, and ceruloplasmin, respectively) after supplementation of 6 mg of Mo/kg of DM for 28 d. Results of this study suggest that Cu from CuGly may be more available than CuSO(4) when supplemented to diets high in S and Mo.  相似文献

Postpartum, presuckle, colostrum samples were collected from 100 mares. Colostral specific gravities significantly correlated (r = 0.9) with colostral immunoglobulin (Ig)G concentrations. Foal serum IgG concentrations highly correlated (r = 0.82) with specific gravities of the colostrum each foal ingested. Eight of 48 foals (17%) had serum IgG concentrations less than 400 mg/dl. The dams of these 8 foals had colostral sp gr less than 1.06 and colostral IgG concentrations less than 3,000 mg/dl. Foals had serum IgG concentrations greater than 520 mg/dl 24 hours after parturition, when the colostral specific gravity of the dam was greater than or equal to 1.06. Effects of breed on colostral specific gravity, colostral IgG concentrations, foal serum IgG concentrations, and mare serum IgG concentrations were not significant.  相似文献

Spontaneous heating in stored alfalfa (Medicago sativa) has reduced forage quality and DM and N digestibility through microbial respiration and Maillard polymer formation. The impact of heating-degree-day (HDD) accumulation in stored bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers.) was evaluated for its effect on nutrient utilization by lambs. Twenty Rambouillet wether lambs (53.1 +/- 0.74 kg) were used in a completely randomized total collection experiment. The hays selected for this study had previously undergone spontaneous heating, producing either 5, 119, 201, 273, or 401 HDD (> 35 degrees C) during a 60-d storage period. Lambs were offered diets of these hays at 1.5% of BW. Dry matter intake did not differ (P = 0.59) among hays. Linear relationships were detected between HDD and apparent digestibilities of DM (y = 59.1 - 0.016x; P < 0.01; R2 = 0.37), OM (y = 59.3 - 0.017x; P < 0.01; R2 = 0.43), NDF (y = 66.4 - 0.012x; P = 0.01; R2 = 0.30), and hemicellulose (y = 74.0 - 0.012x; P = 0.02; R2 = 0.27). Similarly, significant regressions were observed for fecal N excretion (g/d; y = 4.70 + 0.004x; P < 0.01; R2 = 0.68), apparent N absorbed (g/d; y = 7.4 - 0.005x; P < 0.01; R2 = 0.50), apparent N absorption (%; y = 61.2 - 0.038x; P < 0.01; R2 = 0.71), apparent neutral detergent insoluble nitrogen digestibility (%; y = 85.8 - 0.026x; P = 0.01; R2 = 0.73), and apparent acid detergent insoluble nitrogen digestibility (%; y = 1.5 + 0.101x; P < 0.01; R2 = 0.62). Therefore, spontaneous heating during the storage of bermudagrass hay has a negative effect on dry matter and fiber digestion and nitrogen absorption by lambs.  相似文献

Concentrations of serum immunoglobulin (Ig) were determined for 30 channel catfish from pond water at 10 degrees C. These values were compared to measurements of 15 channel catfish from pond water at 30 degrees C. Channel catfish from 10 degrees C pond water had no significant (P greater than 0.05) different Ig concentrations (mean, 398 mg/dl) than catfish from 30 degrees C pond water (mean, 367 mg/dl). Serum Ig concentrations appear not to be different in cold (10 degrees C) vs warm (30 degrees C) pond water for 37.5-45 cm catfish. Channel catfish, 7.5-15 cm (n = 24) had significantly (P less than 0.05) lower Ig levels (mean, 104 mg/dl) than catfish either 7.5-25.5 cm (n = 57, mean, 232 mg/dl) or 37.5-45 cm (n = 45, mean, 388 mg/dl). Also, catfish 17.5-25.5 cm had a significantly (P less than 0.05) less Ig than catfish 37.5-45 cm. The concentrations of serum Ig increase with size (P = 0.0001) of catfish. The mean Ig concentration for 7.5-45 cm catfish (n = 126) was 263 mg/dl. The Ig concentration range was 44 to 650 mg/dl of serum.  相似文献

The stability of blood ionized calcium (Ca2+) and acid-base variables in equine, bovine, ovine, and canine venous blood samples (n = 15, in each group) stored at 4 C for 3, 6, 9, 24, or 48 hours was studied. Variables included blood Ca2+ and standard ionized calcium (Ca2+ corrected to pH 7.4) concentrations, pH, blood carbon dioxide and oxygen tensions, base excess, bicarbonate concentration, and total carbon dioxide content. Results indicate that storage of blood samples at 4 C for up to 48 hours, despite appreciable acid-base changes, is associated with less than 1.5% change in equine, bovine, and ovine blood Ca2+ concentrations. Similar changes were observed in canine blood during the first 9 hours' storage. After 24 and 48 hours' storage, clinically relevant decrease (10.5 and 15.5%) in canine blood Ca2+ concentration was measured. Therefore, Ca2+ concentration in equine, bovine, and ovine venous blood samples stored up to 48 hours, and in canine blood samples stored up to 9 hours at 4 C is of diagnostic use.  相似文献

Serum haptoglobin (Hp) concentrations were measured in swine that were naturally or experimentally infected with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. In swine from a specific-pathogen-free herd, mean serum concentration of Hp (+/- SD) was 5.79 +/- 1.06 mg of cyanmethemoglobin-binding capacity (CHBC)/dl. Serum Hp concentrations in paired samples were measured at 7-day intervals in 40 swine randomly selected from a conventional herd that was experiencing an acute episode of pneumonia and deaths caused by A pleuropneumoniae serotype-5 infection. Day-0 and -7 serum Hp concentrations were 24.58 +/- 1.38 and 23.10 +/- 1.12 mg of CHBC/dl, respectively, with no significant difference between these measurements. In a second conventional herd with a history of chronic infection with A pleuropneumoniae serotype 5, serum concentrations of Hp measured in paired samples obtained 6 days apart were 12.36 +/- 0.81 and 18.63 +/- 0.76 mg of CHBC/dl, respectively, and were significantly (P < 0.05) different from each other. Twenty-nine 12-week-old conventional swine were challenged intranasally with A pleuropneumoniae serotype 1 (n = 19) and serotype 5 (n = 10). Serum Hp concentration increased from prechallenge concentrations of 7.49 +/- 1.38 and 15.10 +/- 1.22 mg of CHBC/dl, respectively, to 41.01 +/- 1.35 and 22.37 +/- 1.78 mg of CHBC/dl, respectively, 72 hours after challenge. For these 29 swine, serum Hp concentration was positively correlated with rectal temperature (r = 0.34; P < 0.001) during the immediate postchallenge period.  相似文献

AIM: To assess the relationship between concentrations of copper in serum and plasma in sheep.

METHODS: Concentrations of Cu were measured in paired serum and heparinised plasma samples collected from 110 sheep in nine flocks. Linear regression was used to evaluate whether flock or gender had a significant effect on the association between concentrations of Cu in serum and plasma. The individual results for concentrations of Cu in serum were then compared with those from plasma, using correlation and limits of agreement plotting.

RESULTS: Concentrations of Cu in serum ranged from 7.3 to 22 (mean 14.0) µmol/L, while concentrations in plasma ranged from 9 to 27 (mean 16.3) µmol/L. On average, concentrations of Cu in serum were 2.3 µmol/L lower than in plasma. Over the range of values seen in this study, concentrations of Cu in plasma and serum were significantly correlated (r=0.89), and mean concentrations in serum were 87% of those in plasma. There was no effect of flock or gender on the relationship between concentrations of Cu in serum and plasma. Despite the significant correlation, there was marked variability between individual samples in the proportion of Cu that was lost during clotting, with the 95% limits of agreement for serum Cu ranging from 70 to 104% of the plasma concentration.

CONCLUSIONS: As in cattle, the individual variability in the loss of Cu during clotting in sheep is too great for concentration of Cu in serum to be used as a substitute for that in plasma.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: When assessing the blood Cu pool as part of the diagnosis of Cu-responsive disease in sheep, the concentration of Cu in plasma should be measured in preference to that of serum. We suggest that a range of 4.5 to 9 µmol/L in plasma be used to define marginal Cu status in sheep.  相似文献

Relationships between the chemical composition of the 9th- to 11th-rib section and the chemical composition of the carcass and empty body were evaluated for Bos indicus (108 Nellore and 36 Guzerah; GuS) and tropically adapted Bos taurus (56 Caracu; CaS) bulls, averaging 20 to 24 mo of age at slaughter. Nellore cattle were represented by 56 animals from the selected herd (NeS) and 52 animals from the control herd (NeC). The CaS and GuS bulls were from selected herds. Selected herds were based on 20 yr of selection for postweaning BW. Carcass composition was obtained after grinding, homogenizing, sampling, and analyzing soft tissue and bones. Similarly, empty body composition was obtained after grinding, homogenizing, sampling, analyzing, and combining blood, hide, head + feet, viscera, and carcass. Bulls were separated into 2 groups. Group 1 was composed of 36 NeS, 36 NeC, 36 CaS, and 36 GuS bulls and had water, ether extract (EE), protein, and ash chemically determined in the 9th- to 11th-rib section and in the carcass. Group 2 was composed of 20 NeS, 16 NeC, and 20 CaS bulls and water, EE, protein, and ash were determined in the 9th- to 11th-rib section, carcass, and empty body. Linear regressions were developed between the carcass and the 9th- to 11th-rib section compositions for group 1 and between carcass and empty body compositions for group 2. The 9th- to 11th-rib section percentages of water (RWt) and EE (RF) predicted the percentages of carcass water (CWt) and carcass fat (CF) with high precision: CWt, % = 29.0806 + 0.4873 × RWt, % (r(2) = 0.813, SE = 1.06) and CF, % = 10.4037 + 0.5179 × RF, % (r(2) = 0.863, SE = 1.26), respectively. Linear regressions between percentage of CWt and CF and empty body water (EBWt) and empty body fat (EBF) were also predicted with high precision: EBWt, % = -9.6821 + 1.1626 × CWt, % (r(2) = 0.878, SE = 1.43) and EBF, % = 0.3739 + 1.0386 × CF, % (r(2) = 0.982, SE = 0.65), respectively. Chemical composition of the 9th- to 11th-rib section precisely estimated carcass percentages of water and EE. These regressions can accurately predict carcass and empty body compositions for Nellore, Guzerah, and Caracu breeds.  相似文献

Acute haemolysis occurred in medetomidine-atropine premedicated dogs (n=6) after infusion of etomidate in 35% propylene glycol (etomidate-PG). Free plasma haemoglobin concentration was 12.0 +3.5 μg/dl at baseline. After premedication (medetomidine 15 μg/kg, IM; atropine 0.044 mg/kg, IM) values were 14 ± 5.2 and 20 ± 4.8 mg/dl, at 5 and 10 minutes, respectively. Plasma haemoglobin values increased significantly (p±0.05; 121 +24.2 mg/dl) 5 minutes after etomidate-PG loading dose (0.5 mg/kg) and infusion (50μg/kg/min) and remained significantly elevated (127 ± 12.7 to 310.6 ± 69.3 mg/dl) throughout the 60-minute infusion period. Acute haemolysis was also observed in dogs (n=3) that received etomidate-PG infusion alone (2 mg/kg loading dose followed by 110 μg/ kg/ min constant infusion). In addition, fresh dog blood (n=3) was incubated alone or with either 0.9% saline or etomidate-PG in test tubes for 5 minutes and free plasma haemoglobin concentration measured. Free plasma haemoglobin concentrations were 18.3 ± 6.8, 11.7 +4.5 and 1712.0 ± 309.6 mg/dl for blood alone, saline-blood and etomidate-PG-blood, respectively. To determine the reliability with which inorganic phosphorus (phosphate) concentrations can be used to predict major intestinal injury associated with equine colic, phosphate concentrations were measured in serum, peritoneal fluid, or both from 9 clinically normal adult horses (group A), 37 horses successfully managed medically for signs of abdominal pain (group B), 26 horses with signs of abdominal pain and undergoing exploratory laparotomy without intestinal resection (group C), and 26 horses undergoing intestinal resection or euthanasia for extensive intestinal lesions (group D). Peritoneal fluid phosphate concentration was significantly greater in horses in group D (mean, 4.58 +/- 0.34 mg/dl) than in horses in group A (mean, 2.78 +/- 0.21 mg/dl), group B (mean, 2.92 +/- 0.27 mg/dl), and group C (mean, 2.98 +/- 0.28 mg/dl; P less than or equal to 0.01). Serum phosphate concentration was significantly greater in horses in group D (mean, 3.87 +/- 0.30 mg/dl) than in horses in group A (mean, 2.73 +/- 0.22 mg/dl), group B (mean, 2.80 +/- 0.21 mg/dl), and group C (mean, 2.78 +/- 0.22 mg/dl); P less than or equal to 0.05). There was significant (P less than or equal to 0.001) correlation between serum and peritoneal fluid phosphate concentrations within each group and when pairs from all groups were pooled. When peritoneal fluid phosphate concentrations exceeded 3.6 mg/dl, intestinal lesions requiring resection or euthanasia were predicted with sensitivity of 77% and specificity of 76%. Detection of failure of transfer of passive immunity (FTPI) is important in reducing morbidity and mortality in neonatal foals. We investigated the performance of a commercial equine IgG test (SNAP Foal IgG Test Kit) to diagnose FTPI in hospitalized foals. Furthermore, we evaluated the usefulness of serum total protein (STP) and serum globulin (SG) concentrations as indicators of FTPI. Serum IgG concentration was measured by means of the SNAP test and single radial immunodiffusion, and SG and STP concentrations were determined by means of a clinical chemistry analyzer. Subjects were 67 hospitalized foals <19 days old. The SNAP test was repeated on 37 samples from 29 foals, with identical results for 24 samples (kappa statistic, 0.64; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.46-0.82). The sensitivity of the SNAP test to detect serum IgG concentration [IgG] < or =400 and < or =800 mg/dl was 90% (95% CI, 71-98%) and 95% (85-99%), respectively, and the specificity was 79% (71-82%) and 52% (39-57%), respectively. Sensitivity for detection of [IgG] < or =400 mg/dl was not affected (P > .05) by plasma fibrinogen concentration, sepsis score, or bacteremia. Specificity for detection of [IgG] < or = 800 mg/dl was lower (P < .05) in foals with sepsis score < or =11 (50% [31-60%] versus 100% [8-100%]) and bacteremia (25% [5-56%] versus 62% [45-62%]). Sensitivity and specificity of [STP] < or = 5.0 g/dl for [IgG] < or =800 mg/dl was 94% (83-99%) and 47% (30-56%), respectively. Performance of the SNAP test in hospitalized foals is impaired because of low specificity, but can have usefulness provided that the properties of the test and characteristics of the foal being examined are considered when interpreting the results. The STP and SG concentrations are poor sole indicators of FTPI in hospitalized foals, but may be useful adjunctive tests.  相似文献

Various surgical procedures were performed in healthy dogs and cats and in dogs and cats with sepsis. Plasma-glucose concentrations after surgery were usually increased over presurgical values. After surgery, cats had significantly higher plasma-glucose concentrations (P less than 0.05) than did dogs. Postsurgical concentrations for healthy dogs were between 100 to 200 mg/dl, whereas the concentrations for dogs with sepsis ranged from 66 to 356 mg/dl. Of 8 dogs with sepsis that developed postsurgical plasma-glucose concentrations of greater than 150 mg/dl, 4 (50%) died, whereas of 7 dogs with sepsis that developed postsurgical concentrations of less than 150 mg/dl, only 1 (14%) died; however, the difference between these 2 mortality percentages was not significant (P = 0.08).  相似文献
