Water relations of bare-root jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) planted in a greenhouse and on a boreal cut-over site were examined during the first growing season. In field-planted trees, maximum stomatal conductances (g(wv)) were initially low (< 0.10 cm s(-1)). Base and minimum xylem pressure potentials (Psi(x(base)) and Psi(x(min))) were less than -1.5 and -1.7 MPa for jack pine and -2.0 and -2.6 MPa for white spruce, respectively. During the growing season, maximum g(wv) increased in both species to around 0.2 cm s(-1). Base and minimum xylem pressure potentials also increased in both species to around -0.5 and -1.0 MPa in jack pine and -1.0 and -1.5 MPa in white spruce, respectively. Minimum xylem pressure potentials in white spruce fell below the turgor loss point during the first half of the growing season. Osmotic potential at the turgor loss point Psi(pi(TLP)) decreased after field planting to around -2.7 and -2.3 MPa in jack pine and white spruce, respectively. In the greenhouse, minimum values of Psi(pi(TLP)) were -2.2 and -2.3 MPa in jack pine and white spruce, respectively. Maximum bulk modulus of elasticity was greater in white spruce and underwent greater seasonal change than in jack pine. Relative water content (RWC) at turgor loss ranged between 71 and 74% in jack pine and 80 and 87% in white spruce. Available turgor (T(avail)), defined as the integral of turgor over the range of RWC between Psi(x(base)) and xylem pressure potential at the turgor loss point, was similar in jack pine and white spruce just after field planting. For the rest of the growing season, however, T(avail) in jack pine was two to three times that in white spruce. Diurnal turgor (T(diurnal)), defined as the integral of turgor over the range of RWC between Psi(x(base)) and Psi(x(min)), as a percent of T(avail) was higher in field-planted white spruce than jack pine until the end of the season. Dynamics of tissue water potential components are discussed in relation to plantation establishment.  相似文献

Bareroot jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) were planted near Elliot Lake, Ontario, on a boreal reforestation site. Site preparation treatments were mixed, mineral and undisturbed (i.e., control) soil. Seedling water relations and growth were examined during the first field season. During the first 28 days after planting, jack pine base (i.e., predawn) and minimum xylem water potential readings were more negative in the control site preparation treatment. White spruce, during the first 10 days, in all site preparation treatments had base and minimum xylem water potential readings more negative than –1.7 MPa. By day 28 base xylem water potentials of white spruce had increased to approximately –1.0 MPa in all site preparation treatments. As the growing season progressed, white spruce minimum xylem water potential readings ceased exceeding the measured turgor loss point first in the mixed followed by the mineral and then control site preparation treatment. Jack pine minimum xylem water potential readings, in all site preparation treatments, almost never exceeded the measured turgor loss point. Water stress and stomatal optimization integrals, day 28 and 125, for both species showed least water stress and greater stomatal optimization in the mixed, mineral and control site preparation treatments, respectively. Both species had less new root growth in the field during the first 28 days after planting compared to seedlings grown for 28 days in a greenhouse for root growth capacity testing. Root growth at 28 days and both shoot and root development at the end of the growing season, were greatest to least in mixed, mineral, and control site preparation treatments, respectively.  相似文献

Water relation patterns and subsequent growth were studied on bare-root and container jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) and black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) seedlings during the first growing season on boreal cut-over sites.Containerized seedlings of both species had greater needle conductance compared to bare-root seedlings over a range of absolute humidity deficits. Needle conductance of containerized seedlings in both species remained high during periods of high absolute humidity deficits and increasing plant moisture stress. Bare-root seedlings of both species had a greater early season resistance to water-flow through the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum (SPAC) than container seedlings. Resistance to water flow through the SPAC decreased in bare-noot seedlings of both species as the growing season progressed, and was comparable to container seedlings 9 through 14 weeks after planting. Four weeks after field planting jack pine container seedlings had greater new root development compared to bare-root seedlings, while at the end of the summer both stock types had similar new root development. Black spruce bare-root seedlings had greater new root development compared with container seedlings throughout the growing season.  相似文献

The effects of drought on the free amino acid pools in 21- to 23-week-old seedlings of black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) Britt.), white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench.) Voss) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) were followed during soil drying. Although water and pressure potentials were sensitive to water deficits, large changes in osmotic potential were not recorded until after the development of severe drought. Total soluble amino nitrogen in the shoots and roots of the three species rose as turgor declined, with peak concentrations attained late in the drought period when the pressure potentials of the shoots approached zero. All white spruce seedlings were alive at zero turgor and showed large decrements in osmotic potential, but concentrations of free amino nitrogen in the roots and shoots showed only modest increases, reaching 125 to 150% of their control values. In contrast, large numbers of black spruce and jack pine were dead or severely damaged at zero turgor, and only small changes in osmotic potential were detected during soil drying. Nevertheless, concentrations of soluble amino nitrogen in both species reached 150 to 200% of control values a few days before the seedlings died. Alanine, arginine, aspartic acid/asparagine, glutamic acid/glutamine, glycine, hydroxyproline and proline were the major components of the free amino acid pools under both water-stressed and non-stressed conditions, with the largest and most consistent increases observed in the roots of all three conifers. Although proline was an important and dynamic component of the free pools, absolute concentrations were commony equalled or exceeded by other free amino acids in the roots and shoots and nearly always exceeded by the concentration of aspartic acid/asparagine in both tissues. Differences in drought resistance among the three conifers were not reflected by unique patterns of amino acid accumulation or by large differences in absolute concentrations of the free amino acid pools.  相似文献

Significant reductions in needle water content were observed in white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss), black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill) B.S.P.), and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) seedlings in response to a 10-day drought, although turgor was apparently maintained. When the seedlings were re-watered after the drought, jack pine needles regained their original saturated volume, whereas white spruce and black spruce needles did not. Significant drought-induced reductions in turgor-loss volume (i.e., tissue volume at the point of turgor loss) were observed in shoots of all three species, especially jack pine. Repeated exposure to 7 days of drought or treatment with the cytochrome P(450) inhibitor, paclobutrazol ((2RS,3RS)-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-4,4-dimethyl-2-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)-pentan-3-ol), reduced seedling height relative to that of untreated controls in all three species. The reductions in saturated and turgor-loss needle volumes in the paclobutrazol-treated seedlings were comparable with those of seedlings subjected to a 10-day drought. The treatment-induced reductions in shoot and needle water contents enabled seedlings to maintain turgor with tissue volumes close to, or below, the turgor-loss volume of untreated seedlings. Paclobutrazol-treated seedlings subsequently survived drought treatments that were lethal to untreated seedlings.  相似文献

Leaf conductance at three absolute humidity deficits (AHDs) (7, 14 and 21 g m(-3)), hydraulic conductance and components of tissue water potential were measured in one-year-old loblolly pine seedlings from six origins representing the geographic range of the species. Measurements were made on seedlings grown (a) with ample water (moist regime) and (b) with recurring severe drought (dry regime). However, all seedlings were well-watered prior to and during measurements. Seedlings grown in the moist regime had greater mean leaf conductances (0.30 versus 0.13 cm s(-1)) and greater responses to AHD than seedlings grown in the dry regime. They also exhibited greater hydraulic conductances (0.53 versus 0.35 microg cm(-2) s(-1) MPa(-1), less negative osmotic potentials (-1.45 versus -1.57 MPa) and higher relative water contents at turgor loss (0.72 versus 0.65). Seed source differences in water relations characteristics were detected only in seedlings grown in the moist regime. In these, trees from the three interior origins had greater mean leaf conductances than those from the three coastal sources (0.32 versus 0.28 cm s(-1)), but no differences in response to changing AHD were observed. Seedlings from North Carolina had lower osmotic potentials at turgor loss than those from Florida, Georgia or Texas. These differences in water relations characteristics are not clearly related to the observed greater survival ability of trees from interior origins compared with those from coastal origins.  相似文献

Bareroot jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) seedlings (2 + 0) and bareroot white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) transplants (1 1/2 + 1 1/2) were taken from cold storage and planted on a clearcut forest site in northeastern Ontario on several dates between May 6 and June 5 during which period soil temperature at 15 cm depth increased from 0 to 18 degrees C. Additional cold-stored trees were transferred to a greenhouse where they were grown in pots for 0, 7 or 28 days and then placed with their roots in aerated water maintained at one of a range of constant temperatures between 0 and 22 degrees C. In both species, daytime xylem pressure potentials (Psi(x)) and needle conductances (g(wv)) decreased with decreasing soil or water temperature. At all root temperatures, g(wv) was lower, and Psi(x) higher, in jack pine than in white spruce. After 28 days in the greenhouse, g(wv) of jack pine seedlings, and Psi(x) of white spruce, was higher than in plants just removed from cold storage. In both species, water-flow resistance through the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum (RSPAC) increased as root temperature decreased. At all root temperatures, RSPAC was higher in plants just removed from cold storage than in plants grown in the greenhouse for 28 days, during which time many new unsuberized roots were formed. At root temperatures above 10 degrees C, RSPAC of both species was higher in trees newly planted in mineral soil than in trees with roots in aerated water; presumably because the roots of planted trees had limited hydraulic contact with the soil. On the day following removal from cold storage, relative plant water flow resistance increased, in both species, more rapidly with declining root temperature than could be accounted for by the change with temperature in the viscosity of water, thus indicating an effect of temperature on root permeability. The same effect was evident in jack pine seedlings, but not white spruce transplants, that had been grown for 28 days in the greenhouse after removal from cold storage.  相似文献

One-year old seedlings of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.), black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss), and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) were subject to seven soil temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 °C) for 4 months. All aspen seedlings, about 40% of jack pine, 20% of white spruce and black spruce survived the 35 °C treatment. The seedlings were harvested at the end of the fourth month to determine biomass and biomass allocation. It was found that soil temperature, species and interactions between soil temperature and species significantly affected root biomass, foliage biomass, stem biomass and total mass of the seedling. The relationship between biomass and soil temperature was modeled using third-order polynomials. The model showed that the optimum soil temperature for total biomass was 22.4, 19.4, 16.0 and 13.7 °C, respectively, for jack pine, aspen, black spruce and white spruce. The optimum soil temperature was higher for leaf than for root in jack pine, aspen and black spruce, but the trend was the opposite for white spruce. Among the species, aspen was the most sensitive to soil temperature: the maximum total biomass for aspen was about 7 times of the minimum value while the corresponding values were only 2.2, 2.4 and 2.3 times, respectively, for black spruce, jack pine and white spruce. Soil temperature did not significantly affect the shoot/root (S/R) ratio, root mass ratio (RMR), leaf mass ratio (LMR), or stem mass ratio (SMR) (P>0.05) with the exception of black spruce which had much higher S/R ratios at low (5 °C) and high (30 °C) soil temperatures. There were significant differences between species in all the above ratios (P<0.05). Aspen and white spruce had the smallest S/R ratio but highest RMR while black spruce had the highest S/R but lowest RMR. Jack pine had the highest LMR but lowest SMR while aspen had the smallest LMR but highest SMR. Both LMR and SMR were significantly higher for black spruce than for white spruce.

Tolerance of bareroot and container-grown seedlings of black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.), jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), and eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) to competition from herbaceous vegetation was examined in the first five years after planting on a site in the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence forest of Ontario, Canada. Shoot and root morphological characteristics of various stocktypes were measured before planting and correlated with 5-year survival and growth following control and no control of herbaceous vegetation. For black spruce and jack pine, medium-sized bareroot stocktypes had greater relative 5-year stem volume growth in the presence of herbaceous vegetation than did container stock of either species or large bareroot stock of spruce. Relative volume growth was measured as the ratio of the cumulative stem volume increment in the presence of vegetation (Veg) to that in the absence of vegetation (NoVeg), i.e., the Veg:NoVeg ratio. In white pine, the Veg:NoVeg ratio of volume increment of medium container and large bareroot stocktypes exceeded that of small container and medium bareroot stocktypes. In jack pine, root collar diameter at planting and number of first-order lateral roots were positively correlated with 5-year Veg:NoVeg ratio of volume increment. In white pine, the Veg:NoVeg ratio was also positively correlated with root collar diameter at planting and with root volume. In black spruce, the ratio was not related to pre-plant morphology. Thus, for white pine and jack pine, certain pre-plant morphological features may be useful in forecasting the relative ability of different stocktypes to grow under herbaceous competition conditions in the field.  相似文献

We tested the effects of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) inoculation on greenhouse-grown white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana L.) seedlings to be used for revegetation of salt-affected tailing sands resulting from the exploitation of oil sand in northeastern Alberta, Canada. White spruce and jack pine seedlings were inoculated with three ECM fungi selected for their in vitro tolerance to excess Na+ and Cl-: Hebeloma crustuliniforme (Bull) Quel. UAMH 5247, Laccaria bicolor Maire (Orton) UAMH 8232 and a Suillus tomentosus (Kauff.) Sing., Snell and Dick isolate from a salt-affected site. The physiological responses of the seedlings to a gradient of NaCl concentration (0, 50, 100 and 200 mM) were assessed over four weeks by: (1) Na+ accumulation and allocation; (2) chlorophyll a fluorescence; (3) growth, (4) water content; and (5) organic osmolyte accumulation. Jack pine seedlings were more sensitive than white spruce seedlings to increasing Na+ and Cl- concentrations. Both species showed decreasing biomass accumulation, and increasing concentrations of organic osmotica and Na with increasing NaCl concentration. White spruce seedlings inoculated with the S. tomentosus isolate had the best growth response at all NaCl concentrations tested. Although jack pine seedlings inoculated with the L. bicolor or S. tomentosus isolate exhibited the highest growth in the 50 and 100 mM NaCl treatments, both fungi increased the photochemical stress and dehydration of their hosts in the 200 mM NaCl treatment. At the latter concentration, jack pine seedlings inoculated with H. crustuliniforme showed the greatest tolerance to salt stress. Although the different fungi altered the physiological response of the host in different ways, inoculation with salt-stress-tolerant ECM fungi increased growth and reduced the negative effects of excess NaCl. Use of controlled mycorrhization may increase survival of coniferous seedlings used for revegetation of salt-affected sites.  相似文献

The acquired thermotolerance of first-year seedlings of jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) hardened at 36, 38, 40 or 42 degrees C for 90, 180 or 360 minutes and of black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) hardened at 34, 36, 38 or 40 degrees C for 30, 90, 180 or 360 minutes was determined by comparison of needle damage to that of non-hardened seedlings (25 degrees C) following exposure to temperatures of 49 and 47.5 degrees C, respectively. Compared to seedlings kept at 25 degrees C, heat injury sustained from exposure to high temperatures was markedly reduced following hardening for 180 minutes at 36 and 38 degrees C in jack pine and black spruce, respectively. Increasing the exposure time at 36 degrees C in jack pine, and at 36 to 40 degrees C in black spruce, also reduced needle damage. The duration of increased thermotolerance was investigated in jack pine, black spruce and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) by comparing heat injury from high temperatures in non-hardened seedlings and in seedlings hardened at 38 degrees C for 180 minutes a day for either 1, 3 or 6 days. In all three species, the duration of acquired thermotolerance increased with the number of days of heat hardening. For jack pine and white spruce seedlings hardened at 38 degrees C for 6 days, increased thermotolerance persisted for at least 14 and 10 days, respectively, after the end of the hardening treatment. In contrast, the thermotolerance of black spruce seedlings hardened at 38 degrees C for 6 days remained elevated for only 4 days.  相似文献

Growth and gas exchange characteristics were studied in pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and spruce (Picea abies Karst.) seedlings grown in hydroponic culture in the presence of N (50 mg l(-1)) and transferred at the start of their second growing season to tap water at 5, 8, 12, 16 or 20 degrees C (air temperature between 18-20 degrees C) for 3 weeks (pine) or 5 weeks (spruce). Root growth of both species was completely inhibited at root temperatures of 5 and 8 degrees C, but increased almost exponentially as root temperature increased. Shoot growth was maximal at 12 degrees C in both pine and spruce and decreased at low root temperatures. In both species, CO(2) uptake was decreased at low root temperatures and appeared to be influenced by the pattern of nitrogen retranslocation. In pine seedlings, as root temperature increased, an increasing proportion of the total nitrogen pool was retranslocated to the new shoot, whereas in spruce seedlings nitrogen was retranslocated to the roots. Differences in the retranslocation of nitrogen in the two species were reflected in the amount of soluble protein in needles, which at the end of the experiment increased with increasing root temperature in pine, but decreased in spruce. Our data suggest that in spruce, but not pine, CO(2) uptake was limited by the amount of Rubisco.  相似文献

Abstract

Fungal root pathogens are widespread and may cause substantial seedling losses in conifer nurseries. Furthermore, poor seedling survival and growth on reforestation sites results in reduced forest regeneration. Use of microbial inoculants for disease control and plant growth promotion has become an important endeavour. A microbial culture collection of 500 strains was assessed for biological control of fungal root pathogens and/or plant growth promotion of conifer seedlings. Seven of these strains showed significant suppres-sive effects on various soil-bome fungal pathogens. On Douglas fir, two strains, RAL3 and 64-3, reduced disease caused by Fusariumby. 7-42% in repeated growth room assays. The same strains significantly increased healthy stand of white spruce seedlings inoculated with Fusariumand Pythiumin a conifer nursery, and increased the survival of bare-root white spruce seedlings planted on a reforestation site by 19-23%. Both strains also significantly increased new root and total plant dry weights. Strain RAL3 in commercial formulation maintained a viable population of about log 8-9 cfu/ml for over a year when stored at 5°C. Strain survival on seed varied with conifer species. No decreases in bacterial populations were observed on seeds of jack pine or Douglas fir after 37 to 44 days storage at 5°C, but decreases were observed on seeds of white spruce and Scots pine. This study has provided candidate beneficial microbial inocu-lants which offer promise for development of commercial inoculants for the forestry industry.  相似文献

Abstract

This study examined the impact of increased irrigation efficiency on the hardening and frost tolerance of 2-year-old containerized white spruce seedlings in the context of groundwater protection, irrigation management and the maintenance of seedling quality in northern climates. The seedlings were grown under three different irrigation regimes (IR =30%, 40% and 55% v/v; cm3 H2O/cm3 substrate) and were hardened under conditions of natural photoperiod and temperature. After being subjected to artificial frost tests on four sampling dates during autumn, the seedlings were compared for bud development and frost tolerance. IR had no influence on frost tolerance as determined by measurements of physiological (electrolyte leakage, root water loss) and morphological (shoot damage, root initiation) variables. At the end of the second growing season, there was no significant difference between IRs in seedling height, root collar diameter, shoot dry mass and root dry mass. The results indicate that the amount of water applied to large-dimension 2-year-old white spruce seedlings during the growing season can be significantly decreased without prematurely impeding their growth or hindering their acquisition of frost tolerance.  相似文献

Root and hypocotyl elongation, water status and solute accumulation were studied in osmotically stressed seedlings of the tropical tree, Colophospermum mopane (Kirk ex Benth.) Kirk ex J. Léonard, which grows in hot arid areas of southern and central Africa. Seeds were imbibed for 24 h and then subjected to a polyethylene-glycol-generated osmotic stress of -0.03 (control), -0.2, -0.8, -1.6 or -2.0 MPa for 60 h. Seedlings subjected to moderate water stress (-0.2 MPa) had higher root growth rates (2.41 +/- 0.24 mm h(-1)), greater final root lengths (111 +/- 3.8 mm) and longer cells immediately behind the root elongation zone than control seedlings (1.70 +/- 0.15 mm h(-1) and 93 +/- 3.9 mm, respectively). Root lengths of seedlings in the -0.8 and -1.6 MPa treatments were similar to those of control seedlings, whereas the -2.0 MPa seedlings had significantly shorter roots. Both root and hypocotyl tissues exhibited considerable osmotic adjustment to the external water potential treatments. Seedlings in the -0.03, -0.2, and -0.8 MPa treatments had similar cell turgor pressures (0.69 +/- 0.10, 0.68 +/- 0.07 and 0.57 +/- 0.04 MPa, respectively), whereas the -2.0 MPa treatment lowered cell turgor pressure to 0.17 +/- 0.04 MPa. Root vacuolar osmotic pressures were generally similar to sap osmotic pressures, indicating that the increased root elongation observed in moderately water-stressed seedlings was not caused by increased turgor pressure difference. Neutral-fraction solute concentrations, including the osmoticum pinitol, increased approximately two-fold in root sap in response to a low external water potential. In hypocotyl sap of seedlings in the -2.0 MPa treatment, pinitol more than doubled, sucrose increased from about 2 to 75 mol m(-3) but glucose and fructose remained unchanged and, as a result, total sugars increased only slightly. The benefits of rapid early root elongation and osmoticum accumulation under conditions of water stress are discussed in relation to seedling establishment.  相似文献

Whole root systems of 2-yr-old containerized white spruce [Picea glauca (Moench) Voss], black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.] and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) seedlings, with intact root plugs, were exposed to various frost temperatures, which a preliminary test indicated would induce approximately 0 (control), 20, 40, 60, 80 and nearly 100% frost damage. Damage to root systems was evaluated using: (1) two measures of electrolyte leakage (relative conductivity and total tissue leakage after autoclaving); (2) water loss after pressurization; (3) chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm, maximal PSII photochemical efficiency) measured 4, 21 and 30 days after the beginning of seedling regrowth and (4) live root dry mass measured 21 days after the artificial frost and 60 days after the beginning of regrowth. Seedling survival and growth after the artificial frost were evaluated using live root dry mass measured after 60 days of regrowth and new shoot length, stem diameter, and root and shoot dry mass. Live root dry mass, dead tissue leakage, jack pine root water loss and fluorescence measurements were all significantly correlated with one or more of the growth variables and the number of significant correlations varied with species. Dead tissue leakage measurements appear to be the most promising method for evaluating root damage to 2-yr-old well-developed root systems of these species.  相似文献

We investigated physiological responses of radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) roots to soil strength and soil water deficit by measuring the osmotic potential (Psi(pi)) and yield turgor (Y) in the elongation zone of root segments of seedlings growing (i) in polyethylene glycol 4000-containing rooting solution of different water potentials (Psi(s)) and (ii) in soil of different soil strengths (Q) at the same soil matric potential (Psi(m)). Root elongation rate (Deltal/Deltat) decreased progressively with decreasing Psi(s) and was associated with decreased Psi(pi) and decreased turgor pressure (P). Osmotic adjustment occurred at Psi(s) < -0.2 MPa. Over a range in Psi(s) of -0.01 to -1.0 MPa, Psi(pi) fell 0.3 MPa whereas P fell 0.7 MPa. Mean Psi in the solution experiment was 0.37 MPa and did not differ significantly with Psi(s) (P = 0.10). Root elongation rate decreased exponentially as Q increased from 0 to 3.0 MPa, and was associated with an increase in P of 0.11 MPa as a consequence of Psi(pi) decreasing by the same amount. Mean Y in the soil experiment was 0.49 MPa and did not change significantly with Q (P = 0.87).  相似文献

The morphological and physiological responses to nitrogen (N) limitation in jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) seedlings were studied following the initiation of four different dynamic N treatments for six and 15 weeks. The N treatments produced needle N concentrations from 11 to 31 mg g-1dry weight, and seven-fold difference in dry weight at 15 weeks. Low-N jack pine seedlings: 1) had an higher root/shoot ratio; 2) extended their tap root more rapidly; 3) were better able to maintain turgor when shoot water potential declined; and 4) had a larger dry weight fraction and apoplasmic fraction than seedlings with higher foliar N concentrations. These responses may contribute collectively to enhance drought tolerance in N-limited plants, thereby affecting seedling quality. Modifying nursery fertilization regimes, other than optimal as usually applied, may thus be needed to produce stock for use on particularly droughty sites. Knowledge of the nature of drought at a particular site could be an important consideration when making decisions related to fertilization.  相似文献

Damage to containerized forest seedlings due to freezing can occur in the fall or early winter in Canadian forest nurseries. The following spring, damage to shoots and impairment of growth is observed. The objectives of this experiment were to measure the impact of late fall low temperatures (0° to --30°C) on whole seedlings of the three most common species used for reforestation in Quebec: black spruce (BS), white spruce (WS) and jack pine (JP). Impacts of freezing temperatures on (i) whole seedling and apical bud mortality, (ii) shoot growth and root mortality, (iii) stem electrical resistance, (iv) shoot and root water relations, (v) concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and total sugars in shoots were assessed. JP showed the highest rate of whole seedling mortality while WS showed the highest rate of apical bud mortality. JP was the most severely affected: destruction of the root system at low temperatures as well as a reduction of shoot growth and stem diameter and a decrease (more negative) in shoot and root water potential. WS showed a reduction of shoot growth despite no apparent damage to the root system at low temperatures. BS was not affected by temperatures as low as --30°C. Nutrient and sugar concentrations were not affected by low temperature treatments.  相似文献
