Summary Pastures provide a good model system to study intergenotypic plant interactions because most pastures are mixtures of several sown genotypes and species and the conditions necessary for genetic change are present: (i) an extremely variable biotic and abiotic environment at the local scale, (ii) wide genetic variation, (iii) intense competition so that strong selection is likely, and (iv) long term continuity enables selection to be continuous and cumulative. These together provide a system in which (v) the theoretical outcome of intergenotypic interactions may be readily tested and maximizes the probability of detecting patterns. Interactions between the species will have both ecological and evolutionary consequences, both of which may be of interest to plant breeders. These patterns are detectable at different scales but particular attention will be focused at the level of the individual genotype and especially with mixtures of the grass Lolium perenne and the legume Trifolium repens. Competition experiments between L. perenne and T. repens are plentiful, but where specific hypotheses about adaptation at the genotype level have been tested, in all cases T. repens grows best when planted with its natural L. perenne neighbor — a reciprocal effect in the L. perenne has only been reported once. This specific T. repens — L. perenne neighbor recognition may be mediated through soil microorganisms, particularly Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii and Bacillus polymyxa.  相似文献

Interspecific hybrids between self-compatible species, Lolium temulentum L. and self-incompatible species, L. perenne L. were obtained using embryo rescue. Two cycles of backcrossing of interspecific hybrids with L. perenne were carried out. A 1: 1 segregation ratio of self comatibility and incompatibility was observed in backcross generations. These segregation data confirmed that self-compatibility of L. temulentum was controlled by a single gene. It suggested that the self-compatible gene of L. temulentum could be introduced to self-incompatible plants of L. perenne through interspecific hybridization. It appears that utilization of a self-compatible gene of L. temulentum would be useful for production of inbred lines of L. perenne. The possibility of breeding procedures of perennial ryegrass using a self-compatible gene was discussed. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Intensive cropping and exhaustive nature of sugarcane–wheat–rice cropping system in the Indo-Gangetic Plains of South Asia have led to the depletion of soil organic carbon content and inherent soil fertility resulting in a serious threat to the sustainability of these production systems. Bioagents like Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus and Trichoderma viride have great potential to restore soil fertility and promote sugarcane growth. Field experiments, therefore, have been conducted to study the integrated effect of bioagents (G. diazotrophicus and T. viride), Farm Yard Manure (FYM) and fertilizer N on sugarcane rhizosphere, crop yield and N economy for two crop cycles during 2004–2006 and 2005–2007 crop seasons at Lucknow, in the middle Indo-Gangetic plain region. Both bioagents could survive and colonize sugarcane rhizosphere and FYM improved their colonization. Enhanced soil microbial population and microbial carbon (SMC) and nitrogen (SMN) with increasing N level were probably due to more available N in the soil. FYM/bioagents amendment further enhanced the microbial carbon. The uniform increase in the fraction of SMC and SMN of total organic carbon indicated that immobilization/mineralization was being maintained in the soil where enhanced microbial biomass might act later as a source of nutrients.Bioagents ammended FYM enhanced the uptake of N, P and K in sugarcane at all the levels of fertilizer N. It was mainly due to the enhanced nutrient availability in the rhizospheric soil as the soil organic C and available N, P and K content increased with the application of bioagents/FYM. A saving of 76.3 kg N ha−1 was envisaged by the use of G. diazotrophicus inoculated FYM with marginal (2.4 t ha−1) decline in the cane yield. Application of T. viride enriched FYM, however, brought economy in the use of fertilizer N by 45.2 kg ha−1 and also increased the yield by 6.1 t ha−1compared to the control treatment. Overall, strategic planning in terms of an integrated application of these bioagents/manures with fertilizer N will not only sustain soil fertility but will also benefit farmers in terms of reducing their dependence and expenditure on chemical fertilizers.  相似文献

The effects of arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) fungi on growth and survival of two pioneer tropical plant species were studied in a greenhouse experiment for 6 months. One, an early pioneer species (Heliocarpus appendiculatus Turcz., Tiliaceae) and the second, a late pioneer species (Stemmadenia donnell-smithii (Rose) Woodson, Apocynaceae). Three growing conditions were used as competition factors—no competition, with intraspecific and interspecific competitions—along with two different conditions of AM—with and without mycorrhizal inoculum. Mycorrhizal colonization of H. appendiculatus roots was seven-fold more than in S. donnell-smithii. With AM infection, H. appendiculatus did not increase in growth, but showed greater survival in the absence of competition. S. donnell-smithii grew better in the presence of AM fungi and the effect of competition was diminished. S. donnell-smithii with AM fungi infection showed better survival and increase in biomass, making it a better competitor than H. appendiculatus.  相似文献

Interspecific hybridisation with Trifolium nigrescens Viv. is a possible strategy to improve the reproductive potential of white clover (Trifolium repens L.). Following the development of a fertile F1 hybrid, three generations of backcrossing have been carried out usingT. repens as the recurrent parent. Vegetative characteristics, stolon growth and seed yield components of the backcross (BC) 2 and 3 generations, as well as the parental species were measured on spaced plants grown in the field. Leaf size and plant spread of the BC2 and BC3 generations were less than T. repens but there was no difference in plant fresh weight. Numbers of inflorescences per plant and florets per inflorescence of the backcrosses were greater than T. repens however this was not reflected indifferences in seed yield per plant asT. repens had more seeds per floret and per plant than the backcrosses. Differences in stolon length, the proportion of flowering nodes and the pattern of axillary bud development were observed between T. repens and the backcrosses. Significant variation among the BC 3 generation for vegetative and reproductive traits was observed. Individual plants among the BC 3 generation were identified that combine high forage yield, substantial inflorescence production and good fertility, and these will form the basis of further selection. Growth of full-sib families of an F1 interspecific hybrid between Trifolium ambiguum M.Bieb and T. repens L, and two generations of backcross hybrids (BC1F2 and BC2F1) with T. repens as the recurrent parent, were compared to their parental species. Plants were grown in a N-free medium and inoculated with Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar trifolii rhizobia effective on T. ambiguum or T. repens. Hybridisation produced progeny that nodulated with rhizobia from either T. ambiguum or T. repens, but plant growth varied. Mean weights of T. repens and hybrids, particularly F1 and BC1F2, were higher when inoculated with a mixture of strains isolated from field grown T. repens than with the New Zealand inoculant strain for T. repens. When inoculated with the mix of rhizobia from T. repens, mean weights were 242, 189, 132, 125, and 100 mg/plant for T. repens, BC2F1, BC1F2, F1 and T. ambiguum, respectively. However, although the mean weight of BC2F1 lines was significantly less than T. repens, there was considerable variation in individual full-sib families indicating the potential to select within BC2F1 hybrids for high plant growth/symbiotic nitrogen fixation. The weight of T. ambiguumplants inoculated with the New Zealand inoculant strain for hexaploid T. ambiguum was similar to T. repens inoculated with the mix of rhizobia from T. repens (253 and 242 mg/plant, respectively). Mean fresh weights of F1 hybrid plants were similar when inoculated with rhizobia for T. ambiguum or T. repens (125 and 130 mg/plant, respectively). However, weight of T. repens, BC1F2 and BC2F1 hybrids inoculated with rhizobia for T. ambiguum were all less than 90 mg/plant. There was a significant relationship between plant fresh weight and ethylene production. The results indicate that measuring weights of inoculated plants growing in N-free media is a rapid initial method of screening a range of plant germplasm for plant growth/symbiotic nitrogen fixation rates. Summary Pollen germination and pollen tube growth after self- and intra- and interspecific pollinations of annual [M. scutellata (L.) Mill., M. disciformis DC., and M. rigidula (L.) All.] and perennial (M. sativa L.) Medicago species were studied using a Carl Zeiss microscope with a fluorescence filter attachment.Self-pollination of self-fertile annual and intraspecific pollination of cross-fertile perennials were characterized by high pollen germination and rapid normal pollen tube growth. In contrast pollen germination percentages were very low and many pollen tube growth abnormalities occurred following interspecific pollination and self-pollination of self-sterile plants. The time period from pollination to fertilization for interspecific crosses was about double that following self-pollination of the annual species. However, fertilization occurred frequently following interspecific pollinations. Much of the sterility was due to factor(s) operating after fertilization.Cooperative investigations of the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station, Dept. of Agronomy and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service. Summary Attempts to obtain a successful interspecific cross between Solanum khasianum Clarke and Solanum mammosum L. were unsuccessful, and the probable reasons for this failure were investigated. A reduced number of viable pollen grains and low receptivity of the stigmas of S. mammosum L. and heterostyly in both species are the probable reasons for the failure of the attempted interspecific crosses between S. khasianum Clarke and S. mammosum L.  相似文献

Short persistence of renovated pastures is a major problem for pastoral production systems. Pasture species establishment, species performance and persistency and their relationships with soil–water attributes following pasture improvement methods were evaluated over two years. Fertilised naturalised pasture (FNP), non-fertilised naturalised pasture (NFNP), Lolium perenneTrifolium repens cultivated pasture (CP), L. perenneT. repens direct-drilled pasture (DP), and Bromus valdivianus, Holcus lanatus, Dactylis glomerata, L. perenne and T. repens direct-drilled pasture (DDP) were established as a randomised complete block design. Pastures were limed, fertilised and sheep-grazed. Plant growth compensatory mechanisms, by decreasing tiller number and increasing tiller size, equalised pasture yield during the establishment. In both years, the improved pastures yield was greater than that of NFNP. In the second year, DDP and FNP reached the higher pasture growth rate, with a seasonality diminishment. During the second summer, soil matrix potential at 0–20 cm soil profile exceeded the permanent wilting point, resulting in the pasture growth rate of NFNP and the sown pastures ranging from 0.0 to 3.6 kg DM/ha per day, while for FNP, it was 17.8 kg DM/ha per day. Sown species, fast-growing species spontaneous colonisation and growth were all stimulated in the improved pastures over species that tolerate stress, improving agronomical and ecological pasture features.  相似文献

Summary The green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) is a serious pest of the tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum). Trichome-based host plant resistance of wild Lycopersicon species may offer an alternative to pesticides for management of this pest. Two wild species, Lycopersicon cheesmanii f. minor and L. pennellii, were crossed with L. esculentum and the types and densities of trichomes possessed by the F1 hybrids measured. The effects of these trichomes on M. persicae were assessed by placing nymphs on leaves and, 96 hr later, designating each nymph as either dead, alive, emigrating off the leaf or unaccounted for. A generalised linear model was used to detect relationships between the numbers of nymphs in each designation and the densities of trichomes and leaf area. Mortality of nymphs on L. pennellii hybrids was associated with high densities of type IV and low densities of type I trichomes. Mortality of nymphs on L. cheesmanii f. minor hybrids was associated with high densities of type III trichomes. An increase in the densities of type III trichomes on L. pennellii hybrids was associated with greater numbers of nymphs emigrating off the leaf whilst unaccounted nymphs on L. pennellii hybrids were associated with increased densities of type VII and type I trichomes. Further experimentation using excised leaflets found mortality on L. pennellii hybrids may be due to nymphs being hindered by type I trichomes and increased densities of type V trichomes were associated with greater numbers of unhindered nymphs. Implications of results are discussed in the context of introducing trichome-based host plant resistance into L. esculentum.  相似文献

Nineteen accessions of the tuber-bearing species Solanum berthaultii, S. chacoense, S. leptophyes, S. microdontum, S. sparsipilum, S. sucrense, S. venturii, S. vernei and S. verrucosum were tested for their resistance to late blight in two years of field experiments. Plants were artifically inoculated with zoospores of race 1.2.3.4.5.7.10.11 and the development of the disease was followed. Resistance ratings, calculated as the areas under the disease progress curves (ADPC), demonstrated a high resistance in all accessions except in S. sparsipilum, S. leptophyes and their interspecific hybrid. Segregations suggest that major genes for resistance are present in S. sucrense and S. venturii, and may also play a role in S. verrucosum. It is not yet certain wether the resistance of the other accessions is comparable to the partial and durable resistance of S. tuberosum cultivars like Pimpernel, as inheritance and mechanism have yet to be established. However, segregations suggesting the presence of single major genes with complete dominance were not found in these other accessions. Tuber initiation in the field occurred in only one accession, S. tuberosum ssp. andigena, and maturity of the clones was not related to their resistance. In the other accessions maturity types could not be assessed, as the clones require short day conditions for tuber initiation.  相似文献

Parasitic nematodes damage white clover (Trifolium repens) roots, negatively impacting forage yield and persistence. No single gene resistance to nematodes has been identified in white clover. Trifolium semipilosum (2n = 2x = 16) genotypes exhibiting either complete resistance or susceptibility to infection by the clover root-knot nematode (CRKN), Meloidogyne trifoliophila, were identified. F1 progeny (n = 92) of a pair-cross between ‘TsR’, a plant heterozygous for the resistance phenotype and ‘TsS’, a plant homozygous for the susceptible phenotype, were challenged with infective CRKN juveniles and evaluated subsequently for root galling. Segregation analysis indicated the resistance phenotype may be conferred by a single dominant allele at a locus (designated TRKR, Trifolium Root-knot Resistance) subject to segregation distortion. TsR, TsS, and bulked resistant and bulked susceptible F1 progeny (n = 12/bulk) were screened using T. repens microsatellite (SSR) markers. Three SSRs revealed polymorphism in TsR and the resistant bulk, of which prs090 and prs247 map to loci on T. repens linkage group D2. Progeny were genotyped with these three SSRs and 23 additional SSRs from T. repens groups D1 and D2. Linkage analysis in both TsR and TsS demonstrated macro-synteny between T. repens group D homoeologues and the T. semipilosum linkage group (designated DTs) containing the TRKR locus. Significant segregation distortion was detected in TsR, and recombination in the central region of the T. semipilosum linkage group was suppressed relative to T. repens in both parents. These data demonstrate the opportunities and challenges for comparative mapping in Trifolium and characterisation of loci conferring resistance to plant-parasitic nematodes.  相似文献

Variation in the ribosomal RNA units of the generaLens andCicer   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary Investigation of the organization of the tandemly repeated 5S and 18–25S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes was carried out on members of the generaLens andCicer using restriction endonuclease digestion and Southern hybridization. The 5S rRNA unit (gene+spacer) inLens (0.38 to 0.50 kb) andCicer 0.50 to 0.44 kb) is the largest among the legumes. InL. nigricans andL. culinaris ssp.odemensis a second repeat size was detected. Restriction maps for the 18–25S units ofLens andCicer species were developed. The 18–25S rRNA unit varied from 8.3 to 9.8 kb inLens and 10.5 to 11.4 kb inCicer. The only detectable variability in theLens andCicer 18–25S rRNA unit was in the length of the intergenic spacer (IGS) region, except for a HindIII site in the IGS region ofL. nigricans ssp.nigricans and in allCicer species.Similarities in the size of both 5S and 18–25S rRNA units were noted betweenL. culinaris ssp.culinaris andL. culinaris ssp.orientalis, which supports previous evidence thatL. culinaris ssp.orientalis is the progenitor of the cultivated lentil. Differences in the arrangement of both 5S and 18–25S rRNA units were noted betweenL. nigricans ssp.nigricans andL. nigricans ssp.ervoides, indicating either divergent evolution of these subspecies or alternatively incorrect taxonomy. On the basis of the size of the 5S rRNA unit,C. bijugum, C. chorassanicum andC. echinospermum formed a group with a slightly smaller unit than the otherCicer species. Similarities in the length of both 5S and 18–25S rRNA units ofC. arietinum andC. reticulatum possibly confirmC. reticulatum as the progenitor ofC. arietinum. Cicer cuneatum has a smaller 18–25S rRNA unit than the otherCicer species as a result of a smaller intergenic spacer.  相似文献

Summary Hybrids between T. ambiguum and T. repens were successfully established after ovule culture. The hybrids were male sterile but one of the hybrids produced a single seed when backcrossed to T. repens, while the other produced a significantly greater number of seeds. The majority of the backcross hybrids from the latter had 48 chromosomes, being produced from the fertilisation of unreduced gametes of the F1 hybrid by T. repens pollen. Regular meiosis in the BC1 hybrid resulted in the production of balanced gametes containing the full complement of T. repens chromosomes and the polyhaploid set of T. ambiguum chromosomes. There was no difficulty in establishing a substantial population of BC2 hybrids. The meiotic behaviour of the BC1 hybrid indicated that it should be possible to transfer genes from T. ambiguum into white clover T. repens. The significance of the results in terms of the use of alien variation in the improvement of white clover is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Extensive pollinations were made in attempts to produce selected intergeneric or interspecific hybrids using Nicotiana and Petunia species that exhibit potential for somatic hybridization. Pollination between pairs of species was done by standard and bud-pollination methods. Nicotiana alata or N. tabacum when pollinated reciprocally with selected Petunia species failed to produce hybrids. Likewise, no interspecific hybrids were obtained between Petunia parviflora and 4 Petunia species or P. hybrida. The type of incongruity existing between these species is discussed in relation to the production of hybrids by standard In vitro techniques as compared to somatic hybridization. On leave from the Department of Horticulture, Michigan State University, E. Summary Three non-tuberous Solanum species of series Etuberosa-S. brevidens (brd), S. etuberosum (etb) and S. fernandezianum (frn)-upon selfing displayed compatible berry set but seed set varied and on an average was below normal. Also in crosses between species berry set was unhampered (apart from the crosses with short-styled frn as pollen plant), but the interspecific hybrid plants showed various degrees of sterility and a low average seed set upon selfing. Cytological investigations revealed that in pure species-plants semi-sterility regularly occurred and was invariably associated with multivalent associations (up to decavalents). This may account for the decreased seed set found after selfing and intercrossing. Meiosis in F1-hybrids was even more irregular, 75% of the pmc's showing multivalents involving from 4 to as many as 22 chromosomes in various complicated configurations in which even numbers of chromosomes were predominant. However, anaphase I separation was numerically balanced in more than 75% of the cells. Pollen stainability was very low in the hybrids. It is concluded that heterozygous translocations occur within each species and that the genomes of the species are differentiated by means of gross structural changes. In view of this and of the high chromosome pairing affinity the genome symbols E 1, E 2 and E 3 are proposed for etb, brd and frn, respectively.Crossability of the Etuberosa species with tuberous S. pinnatisectum (pnt) was slightly more successful (average 2.7 seeds/berry) than that of Etuberosa species hybrids with S. pinnatisectum (average 1.7 seed/berry). In the hybrids studied-etb × pnt, frn × pnt and (brd × etb) × pnt-a high frequency of univalents was the rule (range 6–16 per cell). In addition rod bivalents (4–8 per cell) and a low frequency of trivalents occurred (0–3 in the biparental hybrids and 1–4 in the trispecific hybrid).Utilization of the valuable characters of Etuberosa for potato breeding is dependent on the degree of gene exchange between Etuberosa chromosomes and chromosomes of tuberous species. In the diploid hybrids such exchange, though limited, may take place through bivalents and trivalents. As shown in this article such diploid hybrids are non-crossable because of complete male and female sterility. Only after doubling the number of chromosomes the hybrids are fertile and can be used for further crosses.  相似文献

Dairy livestock production systems rely on high‐quality forage legumes, which are widely present in grassland swards all over Europe. A future climatic scenario with higher average annual temperatures and lower precipitation is expected to affect grassland productivity in general and the productivity of the most important forage legume species Trifolium repens in particular. One way to cope with such constraints is the adoption of currently underutilized minor legume species with a higher tolerance towards drought stress. Therefore, the present study investigated legume species with lower moisture requirements than T. repens, these are Lotus corniculatus, Medicago falcata, Medicago lupulina and Onobrychis viciifolia in comparison with T. repens. Legumes were grown in containers as monocultures in a roofed open‐sided greenhouse under conditions of optimal water supply or periodic drought stress. Generally, drought stress decreased the biomass production, but species differed in their reaction. Particularly, M. lupulina and L. corniculatus had lower relative biomass losses (?26%) compared to T. repens (?43%, as averaged over drought stress periods). However, in overall biomass production T. repens still was at one level with M. lupulina and L. corniculatus under drought stress. This was related to high stomata control as indicated by the intrinsic water‐use efficiency. We conclude that there are promising future options of forage legumes as alternatives to T. repens.  相似文献

The ability of 13 Nemesia species (six annual and seven perennial) to sexually hybridize was investigated. Six of the perennial Nemesia species investigated were inter-fertile with one another. Two of the annual species, N. macroceras and N. strumosa, were inter-fertile. Thirty three crosses were successful and resulted in viable seeds. The analysis of meiotic chromosome behaviour in interspecific hybrids indicated that Nemesia chromosomes in different parental species were homeologous. No evidence of chromosome inversions or chromosome translocations was observed during meiosis in interspecific hybrids between the six perennial Nemesia species. In the hybrids produced between N. macroceras and N. strumosa, a quadrivalent was observed during meiotic metaphase I, indicating that these two species differ by a reciprocal translocation. A successful hybridization was made between N. anisocarpa (annual) and N. foetans (perennial), producing two triploid hybrids. In the unsuccessful crosses, pollen tubes were observed entering ovaries and ovules, suggesting that post-fertilization barriers were preventing sexual hybridization. Many of these crosses produced nonviable, shrunken, empty seeds, suggesting that endosperm breakdown and embryo abortion prevent interspecific hybridization in unsuccessful crosses. The manipulation of ploidy levels in N. fruticans and N. strumosa and tissue culture of N. strumosa × N. fruticans ovules failed to overcome post-fertilization barriers between these species.  相似文献

Summary Inter and intraspecific variation was analyzed in two Catharanthus species with regard to isozyme polymorphism and indole alkaloid content in roots and leaves. No significant differences in alkaloid production were observed in three groups of C. roseus plants individualized for their flower color. Conversely, comparisons between C. trichophyllus and C. roseus, showed large differences of alkaloid profiles in both roots and leaves. Specific isozyme markers on four presumed loci were found allowing us to establish that natural hybridizations could occur between the two species when grown together. Experimental hybridizations confirmed that introgressions were feasiblebut suggested that a reproductive barrier was acting and involved interspecific incompatibility. The identification and assay of the main alkaloid compounds in natural interspecific hybrids displayed such a high hybrid vigor that interspecific hybridization may present a new and successful way of improving alkaloid production in Catharanthus species.  相似文献

Summary The reproductive biology of Sesbania sesban, S. goetzei and S. keniensis (Leguminosae; Papilionoideae) was studied. Fifty percent flowering was observed at 102 to 153 days after germination for S. sesban accessions; 96 to 146 days for S. goetzei and 131 to 176 days for S. keniensis accessions. Flowers opened in the afternoon and remained fresh for 2–3 days. Bee species including Xylocopa sp., Apis mellifera, Megachile bituberculata and Chalicodoma sp. visited the flowers. Hand pollination experiments showed that all three species were self and cross compatible. The percentage of fully developed seeds was greater in pods formed after cross pollination compared to self pollination. No evidence was found for stigmatic or stylar self incompatibility. Outcrossing is probably the common method of reproduction under natural conditions, although in isolated trees substantial seed set by selfing might occur. Pod production under natural conditions was 34% for S. sesban; 49% for S. goetzei and 39% for S. keniensis. Considerable variation was found in pod production under open pollination between accessions of the same species. Selective abortion was observed within pods, with more mature seeds formed at the distal end of the pod.  相似文献
