Analysis of 12 permanent sample plots established in the Galápagos showed that introduced mammals have had a destructive influence on the vegetation; closed forest and scrub have been changed into open vegetation. The plots provide information on the regeneration ability of various types of vegetation. Scalesia forest, dominated by the endemic Scalesia pedunculata Hook. f., might under certain circumstances regenerate rapidly. Miconia scrub, dominated by the endemic Miconia robinsoniana Cogn., regenerates slowly and is consequently more vulnerable to the activities of man and introduced mammals. Arid zone vegetation, characterised especially by endemic species of Opuntia, is able to regenerate, but it is still too early to estimate how the regeneration will proceed. The suggested conservation measures include a continuation of the programme for elimination or control of introduced mammals, and a stronger control with the National Park areas on inhabited islands. Financial support is needed for the Galápagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Research Station to continue and enlarge the activities necessary to preserve the unique wildlife of the Galápagos Islands.  相似文献

We measured methane (CH4) emissions in the Luanhaizi wetland, a typical alpine wetland on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China, during the plant growth season (early July to mid-September) in 2002. Our aim was to quantify the spatial and temporal variation of CH4 flux and to elucidate key factors in this variation. Static chamber measurements of CH4 flux were made in four vegetation zones along a gradient of water depth. There were three emergent-plant zones (Hippuris-dominated; Scirpus-dominated; and Carex-dominated) and one submerged-plant zone (Potamogeton-dominated). The smallest CH4 flux (seasonal mean=33.1 mg CH4 m−2 d−1) was observed in the Potamogeton-dominated zone, which occupied about 74% of the total area of the wetland. The greatest CH4 flux (seasonal mean=214 mg CH4 m−2 d−1) was observed in the Hippuris-dominated zone, in the second-deepest water area. CH4 flux from three zones (excluding the Carex-dominated zone) showed a marked diurnal change and decreased dramatically under dark conditions. Light intensity had a major influence on the temporal variation in CH4 flux, at least in three of the zones. Methane fluxes from all zones increased during the growing season with increasing aboveground biomass. CH4 flux from the Scirpus-dominated zone was significantly lower than in the other emergent-plant zones despite the large biomass, because the root and rhizome intake ports for CH4 transport in the dominant species were distributed in shallower and more oxidative soil than occupied in the other zones. Spatial and temporal variation in CH4 flux from the alpine wetland was determined by the vegetation zone. Among the dominant species in each zone, there were variations in the density and biomass of shoots, gas-transport system, and root-rhizome architecture. The CH4 flux from a typical alpine wetland on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau was as high as those of other boreal and alpine wetlands.  相似文献

This paper is the sequel to an earlier publication (see Biological Conservation, Vol. 5, No. 4 pp. 243–250, October 1973) on the conservation status of deer and describes an IUCN programme for the conservation of world-threatened deer. Research requirements for conservation of deer that are currently threatened with extinction are discussed. The immediate conservation objective is to ensure the species' or subspecies' survival, and the long-term objective is to restore their productive status in the wild. A framework for research to provide data to guide conservation practices is outlined. It comprises a set of research questions, to aid the planning of studies, and statements of the conservation action potential of the results of these investigations. The proposed organization of the IUCN programme and its current status is described. University and other research institutions that would be interested in participating or co-operating in the programme are invited to write to IUCN.  相似文献

Vegetation cover is an important parameter used in assessing the relationship between vegetation and soil erosion. However, the intensity of soil erosion actually changes not only with vegetation cover but also with differences in vegetation type and structure. How to integrate the cumulative effect of the different growth forms making up a vegetation community into one index for inclusion in soil loss predictive equations is an open research question. This paper proposes a method to separately measure the cover of different vegetation strata, estimate their contribution to reducing soil loss, and then to integrate this into a single vegetation index called the stratified vegetation cover index (Cs). The results show that Cs is more effective than projected vegetation cover for the assessment of soil erosion and also can overcome the disadvantages of vegetation indices such as NDVI. This means that Cs is a good substitute for vegetation cover or cover-related vegetation indices in studies on the relationship between vegetation and soil erosion. The concept of Cs may help the local governors or forest department understand the importance of vegetation structure and make right management decisions.  相似文献

Measurements along a hill-slope vegetation gradient in nutrient-poor grasslands from acid grasslands via matgrass swards to calcareous grasslands showed increased ammonium to nitrate ratios in the matgrass swards. These results generated the research question whether there might be a difference in nitrification activity or nitrifying community composition between the different zones in this hill-slope gradient. In each of the vegetation types along the gradient, soil samples were taken in five grassland nature reserves. Potential nitrification rates have been determined as an indication of the size of the active ammonia-oxidising microbial communities. Additionally, the dominant ammonia-oxidising sequences related to the β-Proteobacteria have been determined by a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) based on the 16S rRNA gene in combination with Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) at one of the nature reserves.Compared to the top and lower zones of the vegetation gradient (i.e. acid grasslands and calcareous grasslands, respectively), potential nitrification rates were clearly repressed in the middle, matgrass swards zone. In contrast to the differences in potential nitrification activities observed in one of the nature reserves (Bemelerberg), no differences in dominant ammonia-oxidising sequences were observed at this location. One sequence belonging to cluster 3 of the Nitrosospira lineage appeared to be dominant among the sequences belonging to the ammonia-oxidising species of the β-Proteobacteria in all vegetation zones. Nitrification was apparently inhibited by the vegetation, whereas no shift in nitrifier populations could be shown. The possible role of repressed nitrification in the decline of this vegetation type is discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of detailed surveys for the landscape systems (landforms, vegetation, topsoils and snow cover duration) of a nivation hollow in northern Japan and discusses their evolution in the Holocene epoch. The nivation hollow studied consists of three concentric zones whose landscapes and historical development are different. The outermost zone where snow disappears early is covered with dwarfed trees, Sasa kurilensis (subalpine bamboo) thicket and snowbed grasses. Fossil solifluction lobes and drainage channels are common. In this zone, slope stabilization and vegetation establishment (penetration and settlement of vegetation on slopes) followed by pedogenesis occurred after 12,350 cal BP. In the middle zone, slopes are mostly covered with snowbed plants, and turf-banked terraces and minor slumps are observed. This zone experienced slope stabilization and vegetation establishment followed by pedogenesis after 4870 cal BP. The innermost zone overlaps with the snow-induced bare ground in the centre of the nivation hollow basin. Active geomorphic processes operate here and traces of surficial wash and rills are abundant. Humic soils are not present in this zone. These differences in landscape development of the nivation hollow may reflect the temporal changes in the timings of snow disappearance associated with the Holocene climatic variabilities.  相似文献

This paper documents vegetation injury caused by SO2 emissions from a sulphite pulp and paper mill located in Ontario. Acute vegetation injury caused by SO2 was correlated with increased levels of S within injured vegetation, meteorological data, and air sampling records of SO2 monitored by a continuous recorder located adjacent to the vegetation injury zone. The symptoms of injury observed on plants within the injury zone were described, and the relative sensitivity to SO2 was determined for 75 plant species in the area.  相似文献

有机碳是形成土壤团聚体的重要物质,植被群落通过有机残体的输入增加土壤有机碳含量,从而通过影响团聚体的形成而影响土壤结构。为探究不同植被群落对土壤结构改良的意义,对黄土丘陵区森林带和草原带的不同植被群落土壤团聚体中有机碳组分进行了研究。结果表明:(1)研究区域森林带土壤有机碳含量大于草原带,森林带植被群落土壤总有机碳含量大小顺序为:辽东栎群落>人工刺槐群落>狼牙刺群落,草原带植被群落土壤总有机碳含量大小顺序为:人工沙棘群落>达乌里胡枝子+茭蒿群落>铁杆蒿+达乌里胡枝子群落;(2)土壤活性有机碳和腐殖质碳占土壤总有机碳的比例在两种植被带之间基本相同,相同植被群落土壤活性有机碳占土壤总有机碳的比例高于腐殖质碳占总有机碳的比例;(3)森林带土壤>0.25 mm团聚体含量显著高于草原带土壤>0.25 mm团聚体含量,各种形态的有机碳随着土壤团聚体粒级的增大有机碳含量呈先增加后减少或者随着团聚体粒级的增大而增大的趋势,2~0.25 mm和<0.25 mm团聚体中有机碳含量最高;(4)草原带每种植被群落土壤活性有机碳含量空间差异性较大,辽东栎群落各种形态土壤有机碳含量的空间差异性都较大,<0.25 mm团聚体腐殖质碳含量大于其他粒径;(5)草原带人工沙棘群落土壤各种形态有机碳在土壤剖面上的含量差异很小,其他各植被群落0~10 cm土层土壤有机碳含量均大于10~20 cm土层。  相似文献

A change in the vegetation of UK moorland from Calluna vulgaris-dominated heath to Molinia caerulea- or Nardus stricta-dominated grassland is frequently deemed undesirable on economic and biodiversity grounds. Moorland vegetation restoration is an increasingly practiced management option. However there has been little research on the effectiveness of such management for aiding the restoration of other aspects of moorland biodiversity such as associated insect populations.We sampled Hemiptera and Lepidoptera assemblages from restored, degraded and C. vulgaris-dominated (target) moorland at eight restoration sites in England and Scotland. Vegetation assemblages and additional environmental variables were sampled at the same locations.Vegetation restoration aided the reassembly of moorland insects to a variable extent. Hemiptera restoration success was greatest at mechanically restored sites dominated by C. vulgaris. In addition to treatment, latitude best explained variation in the Hemiptera assemblage. A range of plant species, all either dwarf shrubs or graminoids, acted as further determinants. Lepidoptera restoration success was correlated most closely with the success of restoring the full diversity of the vegetation assemblage and was highest at sites restored by grazing control.The results demonstrate that vegetation restoration brings wider biodiversity benefits and that the form these take may depend on the restoration method used and consequent characteristics of the resultant vegetation assemblage.  相似文献

在陕北黄土高原,根据植被的地理分布、植物区系背景、环境条件的地理变化及造林种草实践,从南至北可划分为落叶阔叶林区、森林草原区和干草原、沙化草原区。以延安一线为界,南部为森林地区,北部为草原地区;再以长城沿线为界,南部为森林草原区,北部为干草原、沙化草原区。延安一线和长城沿线为两条重要的生态分界线,就是这两条生态线把陕北黄土高原划分为森林、森林草原及干草原、沙化草原三个植被区。植被区划是造林种草的理论依据之一,陕北黄土高原的种树种草应遵循这两条生态线,使其与植被分区相符合。  相似文献

Sulphur dioxide and particulate pollution have been occurring over a wide area in the Sudbury region, Ontario, as a result of massive smelting operations. In excess of 3Z million short tons of SO2 were released into the atmosphere in the area in 1972, and this pollutant is now discharged through a 1250-foot smokestack. The particulate contribution is an additional complicating and phytotoxic factor. For example, in 1971, 192 tons of nickel, 145 tons of copper, 1130 tons of iron and 4.5 tons of cobalt per 28 days from two of the smelters were released as airborne pollutants (Hutchinson and Whitby, 1974). The natural vegetation of the area is a mixed deciduous boreal forest, with white pine (Pinus strobus), jack pine (Pinus banksiana), red maple (Acer rubrum), red oak (Quercus rubra), etc. as dominant trees. This forest, which previously surrounded the mining town of Sudbury, has been devastated over the past 50 yr, especially by the SO2 emissions and the increased acidity of rainfall and soils. An area in excess of 100 mi2 is now almost devoid of vegetation and damage to the forest vegetation is visible over an area of approximately 1800 mil. The increased stack heights to dilute local pollution problems have spread the problem more widely. The pH of rainfall sampled up to 12 mi east of the smallest smelter in 1970 was less than 4.3 and that within 2 mi of the stacks was frequently of less than pH 3.0. Soil erosion has occurred on a large scale as a consequence of loss of vegetation. Metal accumulation in the soils has also been a complicating and probably highly persistent phenomenon. Concentrations of nickel in excess of 3000 ppm and copper of 2000 ppm in surface soils occur widely. The increased acidity of these soils has increased metal mobility and solubility, presenting phytotoxic problems. The effects on the soil chemistry, especially of organic composition have been profound. They involve an increased metal binding capacity of these soils, and very high levels of sulphur in the purified Tulvic acid′ fraction itself. Indeed, the evidence is suggestive of the incorporation of sulphonic groups into the changed extracts. Such profound and damaging changes may be merely a consequence of the extreme conditions experienced at Sudbury or they may be a harbinger of things to come in many potentially podsolic soils in areas of increasing acidity of rainfall.  相似文献

The total Hg content in soil and in the epiphytic lichen Parmelia sulcata was determined in a former cinnabar mining area on Mt. Amiata. Metal concentrations in soil and in lichen are significantly related and decrease at increasing distances from the zone most affected by minespoil and by air which is still vented from mine shafts. On the basis of these results and of Al analysis, it seems likely that anomalous Hg content in Mt. Amiata lichens is mainly due to the out-gassing of volatile Hg from soil, from vegetation and, in the most heavily polluted zone, to the air from mine shafts.  相似文献

The effects of liming on the aquatic macrophyte vegetation have been investigated in S and SW Norway. In the western part of the study area, Juncus bulbosus was considerably more frequent in the limed than in the unlimed lakes, whilst in the eastern part there were no such differences, and the J. bulbosus populations were generally not so vital. In some southwestern areas a luxuriant and massiv nuisance growth of Juncus bulbosus in the depth zone 0–4 m was recorded. The most vital plants produced up to 1 m long annual shoots, and developed extensive, dense and vital surface mats in shallow areas (depth zone 0–3 m) after 4–5 years. The original isoetid vegetation had disappeared in the areas of dense J. bulbosus populations, and this development seems to be more or less irreversible. The massive J. bulbosus expansion is seen mainly in directly limed lakes with a sometimes visible layer of calcium carbonate on the sediment surface, but enhanched growth has been observed also in lakes downstream liming. The massive expansion is believed to be due to an increase of CO2 and ammonium in the sediment pore water, combined with a mild climate with a very high precipitation. In many areas the liming has led to an increase in species diversity, and a (re-)establishment of some acid-intolerant species such as Myriophyllum alterniflorum and Potamogeton spp.  相似文献

[目的]研究2018年长株潭(长沙市—株州市—湘潭市)城市群生态绿心区最佳植被覆盖和水土流失状况,为区域综合治理提供理论依据。[方法]运用GIS和RS技术,以长株潭区域降雨、土壤、地形、土地利用等数据为基础,采用归一化植被指数(NDVI)模型和USLE国际通用土壤流失方程为优选模型。[结果]长株潭绿心区总面积为52 287 hm~2,整体植被状况较好,高覆盖度(75%~100%)面积最大,占绿心区总面积一半以上,为26 598.40 hm~2;中低覆盖度(30%~40%)面积最小,占区域总面积的8.61%,为4 501.91 hm~2。长株潭城市群生态绿心区总侵蚀(不含微度)面积为3 654.24 hm~2,占总面积的6.99%。湘潭市侵蚀比重最高,为8.51%,长沙市次之,为6.67%,株洲市侵蚀总比例最小,为5.68%。工程建设用地在禁止开发区、限制开发区和控制建设区的侵蚀面积分别为963.92,310.74,735.11 hm~2。[结论]受人为因素、城市建设、产业分布等影响,长株潭城市群生态绿心区覆盖度空间呈现西部低,中东部高的格局,工程建设是造成绿心区土壤侵蚀的主要原因。  相似文献

Many European blanket mires are degraded and contain few Sphagna. In Wales, more than half exhibit symptoms of degradation. We used palaeoecological techniques to chronicle recent vegetation history at two upland localities in South Wales to provide an understanding of the contribution of various factors in mire degradation and to aid wider conservation management strategies. The data suggest a major vegetation change post-dated the start of the industrial revolution. There was evidence for increased burning activity, but as this phenomenon was not present in all profiles it seems unlikely that fire was the principal or sole agent in vegetation change. Rather, increased atmospheric input, plus a change in grazing pressure, may have been responsible. The implications for conservation management are far-reaching. The present overwhelming dominance of Molinia at Hirwaun Common is unprecedented. So also is a local dominance of Calluna, shown in one area at Mynydd Llangatwg. Hence, the approbation often accorded to Callunetum needs to be tempered with the knowledge that its presence in the Mynydd Llangatwg landscape is not long-standing. Indeed, millennial-scale dominance of Sphagnum imbricatum characterizes the earlier record. Its demise and that of Drosera intermedia took place in historical times. Both localities show floristic impoverishment within the 20th Century, with relatively recent single-taxon supremacy. So, conservation management to reduce the current pre-eminence of Molinia would not run counter to long-established dominance; ways to achieve this are suggested. The methods used in this study have wide applicability in mire conservation.  相似文献

Ponds on about 80 km2 of farmland in Sussex were investigated with regard to breeding amphibians. The survey covered five different geological strata and included 60 ponds (out of a total of more than 200) marked on 1:25000 ordnance maps. Eighteen of these ponds were found on inspection not to exist; the remainder were characterised with respect to surface area, depth, pH, ionic score, aquatic vegetation, fish fauna and surrounding terrestrial habitats as well as for amphibian species. 14 pools contained amphibians; Triturus vulgaris was the most widespread (9 ponds) closely followed by T. helveticus (8 ponds). T. cristatus occurred at 5 sites, Rana temporaria at 2 and Bufo bufo not at all. The 2 frog sites were very shallow pools on pasture/woodland interfaces; the ideal newt pond had no fish, was 0·5–1·0 m deep and < 200 m2 in surface area with 5–50% aquatic vegetation cover and a low ionic score (< 400 parts/106). Callitriche-containing ponds were particularly favoured, and with terrestrial habitat there was a requirement for a scrub or woodland component.  相似文献

Adult western jewel butterflies Hypochrysops halyaetus Hewitson were studied in the Koondoola Regional Bushland Reserve on the northern outskirts of the Perth metropolitan area, Australia, in 1999. The butterfly is myrmecophilous, and the southern (Perth) form is considered to be ‘Vulnerable’. Butterfly dispersal, distribution, population size and habitat preferences were estimated using mark-recapture techniques. Butterflies were capable of moving large distances, and were widespread within the reserve but with a low density; however, one small physical area (80 × 20 m) contained a colony with large numbers of individuals. This colony, and an adjacent area of bush, was subject to a detailed microdistribution study: 1158 butterflies were marked within it over a 25-day period. The small size of the microdistribution study area compromised statistical independence assumptions: spatial autocorrelation was tested for and corrected, where appropriate, using a Markov-chain Monte-Carlo approach. Sex differences were evident in spatial autocorrelation: female data were not spatially autocorrelated, whilst male data was. The latter probably reflects the impact of the perching mode of mate location employed by males. Butterflies appeared to prefer rather degraded bush typical of a post fire/disturbance regime with high densities of the host plant Jacksonia sternbergiana. Males were positively correlated with the proportion of bare ground, again probably relating to preferred perching sites for mate location. Females were negatively correlated with Conospremum stoechadis probably indicating dense ground cover in degraded areas and Xanthorrhoea preissii probably an indicator at the site of more mature vegetation. Reserve management to improve vegetation quality may threaten the persistence of the butterfly within the reserve, whilst controlled burning to create even quite small new areas of habitat in an urban situation may be difficult to achieve. The creation of suitable habitat may be possible using mechanical means, provided the action of fire is not an essential component of habitat creation. As the western jewel appears to prefer degraded vegetation, it is possible that there may be opportunities for this species’ expansion within the urban environment provided that its mutualistic ant partner is also present.  相似文献

Potential and actual breeding sites for amphibians have been investigated in an area encompassing agricultural land and uncultivated heathland. pH and conductivity measurements have been made together with species records and some other aspects of habitat structure noted. Ponds around the farmland-heathland interface were especially well used by amphibians; there had been major losses of ponds in the agricultural zone, while those further out on the heathland were usually highly oligotrophic and capable of supporting only Triturus helveticus at most. Populations of the newts T. helveticus and T. vulgaris were composed of significantly smaller individuals in heathland ponds than in other sites. Implications of this study for conservation are discussed.  相似文献

The endangered Australian subtropical rainforest understorey shrub Triunia robusta, is restricted to the south-east Queensland region of Australia. The potential pre-clearing and current distribution of the species was modelled by relating species presence at recorded locations to correlated abiotic and biotic factors, which in combination, were then used as a surrogate for predicting distribution of the species habitat over its known range. From a defined study area of 330,000 ha, output of geographic areas likely to contain T. robusta habitat at three levels of probability were generated for pre-clearing vegetation, and vegetation classified as remnant in 1999. Potential pre-clearing distribution was compared with potential current distribution to ascertain the likely impact of clearing of native vegetation on the extent, pattern, and contiguity of T. robusta habitat. For pre-clearing vegetation, a total area of 45,480 ha was identified as potential T. robusta habitat. For vegetation classified as 1999 remnant, 13,440 ha were identified, representing an overall reduction of 70% in potential habitat for T. robusta. The model was partially validated, with T. robusta found at six new locations. Allowing for errors from spatial mismatching, five of the sites were located within habitat patches predicted by the model. A number of local areas containing high densities of predicted habitat patches were identified to guide searches for unrecorded populations. Strategically located areas linking known populations containing suitable or potentially suitable habitat that may be available for introduction of new populations were identified. The results indicate that the species former centre of range was in lowland areas adjacent to the north arm of the Maroochy River. Clearing and fragmentation of T. robusta habitat is the most likely cause of the apparent decline in distribution and abundance of the species.  相似文献

The Solent, a large estuarine system on the central south coast of England, is an important wintering ground for the dark-bellied brent goose Branta bernicla bernicla: peak winter counts there rose from 300 in 1951–1952 to 23 000 in 1979–1980. Until 1973–1974 the geese remained in the intertidal zone, where they fed on eelgrass Zostera and green algae Enteromorpha and Ulva lactuca. The increase in goose number coincided with the spread of these plants in parts of the Solent. The spread of algae has been linked with increased discharges of sewage. However, only part of the annual production of Zostera and algae is available to geese because of autumn and winter die-back, storm damage and other factors.From 1973 to 1974 geese fed on permanent pasture, playing fields and autumnsown cereals, the last being especially important in 1978–1979 and 1979–1980. The evidence suggests that in some estuaries terrestrial feeding is increasingly attractive even though the intertidal zone could still sustain most of the goose-days spent in the area. The habit appears to be stimulated by large numbers of first winter birds in the population.The geese have evoked great public interest and generated concern for estuarine conservation. However, terrestrial feeding conflicts with farming. Nature conservation organisations have encouraged a policy of scaring from valuable crops by proven methods, whilst seeking to provide alternative terrestrial refuges.  相似文献
