The arsenic bioavailability in the bed sediments from the Anllóns River (NW Spain) has been assessed by using several analytical approaches. A six-step sequential fractionation was compared to three general availability tests: the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) extraction, which estimates the leaching potential of As and its effect on the survival of microorganisms (Vibrio fischeri), an extraction with 1 M HCl extraction, which estimates the bioavailability to higher plants, and a physiologically based extraction test (PBET), which estimates the bioavailability to superior animals. Arsenic was found to be mainly associated to the least mobile fractions: bound to Fe-Al oxides and in the residual phase. Among the three single extractants considered, the PBET extracted the highest As concentrations (1–11% of the total As). The TCLP extracts showed toxicity to Vibrio fischeri whereas for the plants evaluated, aqueous extracts did not show adverse effects.  相似文献

The efficiencies of two types of constructed wetlands for the treatment of low-concentration polluted eutrophic landscape river water were studied in the western section of the Qingyuan River at the Minhang campus of Shanghai Jiaotong University. The first wetland was a single-stage system using gravel as a filtration medium, and the second was a three- stage system filled with combinations of gravel, zeolite, and fly ash. Results from parallel operations of the wetlands showed that the three-stage constructed wetland could remove organics, nitrogen, and phosphorus successfully. At the same time, it could also decrease ammoniacal odour in the effluent. Compared to the single-stage constructed wetland, it had better nutrient removal efficiencies with a higher removal of 19.37%-65.27% for total phosphorus (TP) and 21.56%- 62.94% for total nitrogen (TN), respectively, during the operation period of 14 weeks. In terms of removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), turbidity, and blue-green algae, these two wetland systems had equivalent performances. It was also found that in the western section of the test river, in which the two constructed wetlands were located, the water quality was much better than that in the eastern and middle sections without constructed wetland because COD, TN, and TP were all in a relatively lower level and the eutrophication could be prevented completely in the western section.  相似文献

Using ICP-AES and ICP-MS, several metals were analyzed in water and suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples collected under normal turbidity conditions at various stations from Deûle river (in northern France) to assess the impact of a former smelting plant on the fate of particulate elements and on the water quality in this aquatic environment. Compared to their regional background, particulate Pb, Zn and Cd were found to be most enriched, suggesting anthropogenic inputs from bed sediments into the water column mainly due to physical disturbances induced by barges traffics. Conversely, no significant enrichments of particulate metals such as Cu, Cr and Ni were observed in Deûle SPM. Characterization of SPM with analyses of mineralogical and chemical compositions—using environmental scanning electron microscopy equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (ESEM/EDS)—indicated the presence of micro-specimens attributed to anthropogenic minerals, mostly PbS and ZnS. The calculated enrichment index (or the geoaccumulation index, I geo), enrichment factor (EF) and the partition coefficient (K d) confirmed that SPM was strongly polluted in cadmium, lead and zinc, moderately polluted in copper and unpolluted in chromium and nickel. Based on the analytical data obtained for SPM from the BCR (European Community Bureau of Reference) sequential extraction scheme, it was concluded that: (i) the reducible phases were largely more important for the binding of Pb and Cd than that of Zn and Ni and in a lesser extent Cu and Cr; (ii) copper was found to be mostly associated with the sulphides/organics fraction; (iii) chromium with a lithogenic origin was extracted in the largest percentage in the residual phase; and (iv) zinc was bound to the exchangeable-carbonate phase in the largest percentage in the particles analysed, followed by nickel and cadmium, suggesting that these metals might be easily remobilized if changes in environmental conditions would occur.  相似文献

Purpose

The study was carried out in a wetland of the Middle Paraná River system, Argentina, in order to evaluate the processes associated with the decomposition of manure, which includes changes in chemical composition, nutrient release of manure, and colonization of invertebrates. We also compared the invertebrate assemblage that colonized manure with that present in the benthos of the wetland.

Materials and methods

Nylon bags were filled with fresh cattle manure and anchored to the littoral zone of the wetland. Six bags were collected after 1, 2, 6, 14, 21, 28, 33, 55, and 79 days: three for invertebrate determination and the other three bags for determination of dry mass and chemical analyses. The nutrient content, cellulose, lignin, and total phenolic compounds of manure were determined. In addition, the leachate of manure was collected for nutrient analyses. Samples of the wetland benthic sediment were collected for benthic invertebrate determination and particle size analyses. Spearman rank correlation was used to evaluate the relationship between chemical compounds of manure and breakdown rate. Principal component analysis was used to explore invertebrate assemblage composition of manure and sediment during the experiment.

Results and discussion

Limnodrilus, Dero, and Chironomus were dominant in the manure. Gatherer-collector was the dominant group in the manure, comprising almost 95 % of the total density of invertebrates. Breakdown rate was significantly related with nutrients, cellulose and total phenolics of manure. An ordination plot showed changes in invertebrate assemblages of manure and sediment samples over time.

Conclusions

This study provides new insight on the importance of manure as a substrate for macroinvertebrate colonization. Cattle manure needs to be considered as a potential source of nutrients for aquatic systems and a substrate for invertebrate assemblages.

Purpose

The Oh?e River has received contamination from metal mining and metallurgy (mainly Cu, Pb, Sn, U, Zn) over the previous five centuries. This contamination history has been poorly documented. Contamination has entered the river system in its middle reach, where the channel is incised and bedrock confined, which impedes overbank deposition. Our objective was to locate and describe a sedimentary record in this unfavourable depositional setting.

Materials and methods

Three former channel bars that have coalesced with the riverbank were revealed by examination of historical and current maps and a digital terrain model. Manual coring in the bar and in situ (handheld) X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy provided data for developing a contamination chemostratigraphy, which was correlated with the mining history in the region. Detailed topographic examination of the bar and valley edge was important to understanding the evolution of one of the bars. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was used to verify the timing of deposition.

Results and discussion

Handheld XRF for in situ analysis of element composition is efficient for studying contaminated sediment bodies with complex stratigraphy, which require extensive coring and stratigraphic correlation. Despite the unfavourable settings, the channel bars trapped sufficient sediment to produce a record that correlates with the history of contamination in the drainage basin. In the bar studied in greatest detail, we observed a surprising amount of contamination passing through the Oh?e River channel (up to 300 mg kg?1 of Cu, 340 mg kg?1 of Pb and 630 mg kg?1 of Sn in fine sand and silt deposits) associated with a pollution climax in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Modern contamination (Hg and U deposited in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries) was entrapped with low efficiency based on comparable concentrations of Hg and U located 90 km downstream.

Conclusions

The efficacy of the use of historical maps and detailed fieldwork was demonstrated by identification of unique depositional meso-environments, which are rare in bedrock-confined fluvial systems. The contamination chemostratigraphy of the bar deposits was correlated with the local mining and pollution history and contributed to an understanding of the bar evolution. The approach used in our study may be applicable to other montane rivers with historic ore mining and processing in their basins.

To evaluate adverse impacts of metal pollution originating from smelting activities on the aquatic ecosystem of Deûle river in northern France, water samples were collected from five selected stations along a contaminated region of this river (during two surveys: April–June 2005 and April–May 2007). All samples were analysed using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) atomic emission spectroscopy and/or ICP-mass spectrometry. Both the concentrations of dissolved and particulate elements were determined, and analytical data were compared with national and international water/particle quality guidelines as well as with some values reported in the literature for polluted rivers. For all the metals studied (i.e. Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn), our investigations showed that the effects of the dissolved phase on this aquatic medium were weak, according to water quality status established by US Environmental Protection Agency, USEPA (1994, 1999). Conversely, the levels of metals in suspended particulate matter were found to be much higher than local background contents and natural reference levels in French catchments. These levels were further quantified as “serious” contamination, i.e. above the “red” range that was previously elaborated by most existing metal-contamination scales in French basins of similar geology. The affinity of these metals for the particulate phase in Deûle waters follows the order: Cd >Cr > Pb > Zn = Mn > Cu > Ni. The trace metals released from anthropogenic activities were found to be partly bound to the reactive particulate phase, calcite, which is sensitive to physico-chemical variations occurring in the river ecosystem. To appraise the risk of ecotoxicity by metals, predictions on the ability to release metallic pollutants from calcite into waters were made successfully by testing three equilibrium geochemical speciation models (JCHESS, VISUAL MINTEQ and WINHUMIC) in which soluble organic matter was taken into account. Calculations showed that metal–water–calcite systems in Deûle River are close to thermodynamic equilibrium with generation of solid solutions, MeαCa1-αCO3, by (co)precipitation and/or adsorption reactions. On the basis of results mentioned here, more measurements of river chemistry and assessments of predictive capabilities of chosen water-quality guidelines with time would be developed in aquatic and calcareous areas for controlled dredging operations or other treatment engineering works.  相似文献

Spatial and seasonal mobilization trends of metals in surface water were evaluated in the US–Mexico San Pedro River (SPR). Water samples were collected at five sampling stations for the analysis of dissolved oxygen, pH, electric conductivity, sulfates, and metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn). Quality of the water was characterized through Ecological Criteria of Water Quality (ECWQ) established in Mexico and Water Quality Criteria (Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)). High total metal concentrations were detected as follows: Fe?>?Cu?>?Mn?>?Zn?>?Pb?>?Cd. Metal concentrations were slightly higher in dry season than in rainy season: Cd (below detection limit (BDL)–0.21 mg L?1), Cu (BDL–13 mg L?1), Fe (0.16–345 mg L?1), Mn (0.12–52 mg L?1), Pb (BDL–0.48 mg L?1), and Zn (0.03–17.8 mg L?1). Low pH and dissolved oxygen values as well as high sulfate content were detected in both seasons. High values of metals (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn) were detected at station E1 representing pollution source, as well as at stations E2 (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn), E3 (Fe, Mn, Pb), and E4 and E5 (Fe, Mn). Detected concentrations exceeded maximum permissible established in ECWQ and Water Quality Criteria (EPA). Efflorescence salts on sediments in the dry season could increase levels of metals in water column. This study provides valuable information on the potential mobility of metals in surface water of SPR located in an arid environment where transport processes are strongly linked to climate. The information derived from this study should help the regional and national authorities to address present environmental regulations.  相似文献

Concentration of sulfur (S) in mulberry leaves was 1.44 ~ 2.67 g kg?1 (Mean ± SE = 2.03 ± 0.30 g kg?1) in the six provinces of Jiangxi, Anhui, Hubai, Hunan, Jiangsu, and Fujian, China. Concentration of S in mulberry leaves was influenced significantly by the concentration of available S in soils of mulberry gardens (R 2 = 0.1773**, n = 52). Sulfur concentration in mulberry leaves, cocoon shells, silkworm pupae, and silkworm excrement in high-yielding mulberry gardens was higher than that in low-yielding mulberry gardens. The curvilinear correlation between concentration of sulfur in mulberry leaves and cocoon shells was significant (R 2 = 0.2101*, n = 26, a < 0).  相似文献

Purpose

Investigations of geochemical characteristics of sediments of the Zrmanja River estuary were done in order to determine the natural and anthropogenic factors influencing sediment composition in this area. For that purpose, spatial and temporal distribution of major and trace elements in the sediments and surrounding soils was studied.

Materials and methods

Sediment and soil samples, including one marl sample, were collected at 28 locations. All samples were subjected to total digestion and subsequently analysed by high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS) for total concentration of 20 elements (Ag, Al, As, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sn, Sr, Ti and Y). Obtained concentrations and their normalized counterparts were used for assessment of factors influencing sedimentation in the study area.

Results and discussion

The results of the analysis showed that the composition of sediments of the Zrmanja River estuary is primarily determined by the composition of bedrock, existing hydrodynamic conditions and the relative isolation of the studied basin. Nevertheless, anthropogenic influences were observed as well. The composition of the Zrmanja River sediments reflects the impact of the ex-alumina factory “Jadral” and transfer by wind of the material from its immediate surroundings to the water system of the Zrmanja River. In addition, sedimentation in the Zrmanja River was found to be influenced by the construction of reservoirs and the HE “Velebit”, hydroelectric power plant located in the Zrmanja watershed.

Conclusions

The geochemical composition of recent sediments of the Zrmanja River estuary is controlled primarily by natural factors, although the influence of anthropogenic activities is also evident.

Purpose

Understanding the fate and behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) sources in aquatic systems is important for the efficiency of control policies. In this work, a new approach??organic carbon-normalized sediment?Cpore water partition coefficients of PAH source contributions (logK??Osource)??was developed to study the sediment?Cpore water partition of PAH source contributions. The focus of this study was the Yellow River, which is the second largest river in China and one of the largest rivers in the world.

Materials and methods

Sixteen priority US Environmental Protection Agency PAHs were analyzed in 14 surface sediments and 11 pore water samples. Principal component analysis?Cmultiple linear regression (PCA-MLR) and Unmix models were employed to estimate the source contributions of PAHs in sediments and pore water samples. Finally, logK??Osource values were calculated according to the modeled source contributions of PAHs.

Results and discussion

??PAHs (sum of the 16 PAH concentrations) in 14 sediment samples and 11 pore water samples from the Yellow River were 1,415?±?726?ng?g?1 dry weight (dw) and 123?±?57.4???g?l?1, respectively. The source apportionment results indicate the following: (1) for sediment samples, the contributions to ??PAHs from vehicular emissions, coal combustion, and petrogenic sources were 41.07?C61.05, 38.83?C45.56, and 11.18?C14.92?%, respectively, and (2) for pore water samples, vehicular emissions were the most significant contributor (45.51?C69.39?%), followed by petrogenic sources (29.80?C34.22?%) and coal combustion (7.35?C21.59?%). Coal combustion had the highest logK??Osource values (4.15?C4.26) among the three categories, followed by vehicular emissions (3.51?C3.57) and petrogenic sources (3.30?C3.43).

Conclusions

The possible categories of PAH sources identified by hierarchical cluster analysis, PCA-MLR, and Unmix models were consistent, indicating that vehicular emissions, coal combustion, and petrogenic sources were three important categories. The logK??Osource values indicate that contributions from coal combustion had a higher partition for the sediment phase compared with the other two source categories.  相似文献

The concentrations of mercury, lead, cadmium, and arsenic were evaluated in 96 samples, 12 by each one of the following eight fish species: snook (Centropomus undecimalis), crevalle jack (Caranx hippos), Serra Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus brasiliensis), southern red snapper (Lutjanus purpureus), blue runner (Caranx crysos), Atlantic tarpon (Megalops atlanticus), ladyfish (Elops saurus), and Atlantic goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara), which were collected during 1 year in the Atrato River Delta in the Gulf of Urabá, Colombian Caribbean. Three fish were caught from each of the following sites the community usually uses to catch them (known as fishing grounds): Bahía Candelaria, Bahía Marirrío, Bocas del Roto, and Bocas del Atrato. The quantification of metals was performed by microwave-induced plasma-optical emission spectrometry. The Pb concentration fluctuated from 0.672 to 3.110 mg kg?1, surpassing the maximum permissible limit (MPL?=?0.3 mg kg?1) for human consumption for all species. The Hg concentration ranged between < Limit of detection and 6.303 mg kg?1, and in the crevalle jack and Atlantic tarpon, concentrations exceeded the MPL (0.5 mg kg?1). The levels of Cd and As were not significant in the studied species and did not exceed the MPL (0.05 mg kg?1).  相似文献

Purpose

Almost 20 nuclear reactors are situated along the Rh?ne valley, representing Europe??s largest concentration of nuclear power plants. The fate of suspended sediments and natural and artificial particle-bound radionuclides in relation to extreme hydrological events was assessed at the lower course of the Rh?ne River, which provides the main source of water and sediment inputs to the northwestern Mediterranean Sea.

Materials and methods

We sampled water at a high frequency over the period 2001?C2008 and measured suspended particulate matter (SPM) loads and particle-bound natural and artificial radionuclide concentrations at the SORA observatory station in Arles, France. We monitored various hydrological events (either natural or anthropogenic origin) and characterize their influence on concentrations and fluxes.

Results and discussion

The relationship between SPM concentration and the very wide range of water discharges did not differ significantly from previous periods, indicating no significant shift in the average sediment delivery over the last 20?years. Unexpected hydrological events of anthropogenic origin, in particular those associated with flushing of reservoirs that are generally not captured by sampling strategies, were recorded and were shown to transfer significant additional sediment and associated contaminants towards the marine environment. Concentrations of anthropogenic radionuclides associated with sediment (i.e., 137Cs, 60Co, 54Mn, 110mAg, and Pu isotopes) varied over two to three orders of magnitude during periods of low and moderate flow due to variations in the liquid release from nuclear facilities. Except for Pu isotopes, the concentrations of the various particle-bound radionuclides generally showed a decreasing trend with increasing discharge, revealing the geochemical or anthropogenic background values, and providing a useful flood fingerprint for this large fluvial system before its entry into the marine environment.

Conclusions

Our approach produced key data on the level and fate of suspended solids and radionuclide concentrations during flood events occurring in a large river system that could be contaminated by chronic or accidental radioactive releases. These results are of fundamental importance for further interpretations of sediment dynamics at the river mouth.  相似文献

The Subaé river watershed is considered one of the most critical Pb-impacted environments in Brazil and around the world, due to pollutant dispersion during 33 years of lead ore purification in Santo Amaro da Purification. Severe damages have been reported in biota and population, which depends on the Subaé river watershed quality for agriculture, fishing, and shellfish harvesting. This study aims to understand the geochemical characteristics and dynamics of the river close to the former Pb smelter. The river was sampled at eight sites upstream and eight sites downstream the smelter, near the estuary in the Todos os Santos Bay, six times during a year. Immediate analyses were performed by multiprobe. Major ions were measured by chromatography, dissolved metals by ICP-OES in the filtrated samples (0.45 μm), and particulate metals >?0.45 μm by EDX spectrometry. The ions Na+ and HCO3? are dominated in the river. Most of the samples (47.6%) were classified as sodic, due to oceanic saline intrusion during tide. Despite the high pollution caused by the smelter from 1960 to 1993, still observed in the surrounding soils, dissolved and particulate metals in the river remained low in all sites during the entire year. Only Cu presented some concentration above the threshold of the Brazilian regulations. The discharge of metals by the river into the Todos os Santos Bay appears to be low for Pb and Zn (2.2 and 14.3 kg km?1 year?1, respectively), but higher for Cu comparatively to other worldwide bays.  相似文献

Mercury (Hg) transport was studied in a river in Kobbefjord, near Nuuk in West Greenland, during the 2009 and 2010 summer periods. The river drains an area of 32?km2, and the Kobbefjord area is considered representative to low-Arctic West Greenland. The river water origins from both precipitation and melting of small glaciers and annual water discharges for 2009 and 2010 were estimated to be 29 and 26 million?m3, respectively. Mean Hg concentrations (±SD) were 0.46?±?0.17 and 0.26?±?0.17?ng?L?1 for 2009 and 2010. The annual Hg transport was estimated to 14 and 6.4?g, corresponding to a transport rate of 0.45 and 0.20?g Hg km?2?year?1 from the river basin. The highest Hg concentrations (up to 1.0?ng?L?1) and discharges were measured in spring 2009 along with melting of extensive amounts of snow deposited during the 2008?C2009 winter period. In contrast, the following 2009?C2010 winter period was relatively dry with less snowfall. This indicates that a major fraction of the Hg in this area is likely to come from Hg deposited along with winter precipitation (as wet deposition) released upon snowmelt. Also, the results show that while Hg concentrations were low in Kobbefjord River compared to other sub-Arctic/Arctic rivers, the annual Hg transport rates from the basin area were within the range reported for other sub-Arctic/Arctic areas.  相似文献
