Bioindication has proved to be a useful tool to evaluate the state of conservation of an ecosystem based on the living organisms it contains, and thus many studies have used arthropods as bioindicators. In the cultivation of olive (Olea europaea L.), several management methods are employed, from organic production to conventional intensive farming. This study uses arthropod fauna as a means of discriminating between management types and takes into account the features of sampling methods and the data set used in order to make the discriminant method more effective.A total of 15 olive orchards were considered under three types of management (organic production, conventional non-tillage, and traditional conventional farming). During the summer of 2007, sampling was undertaken fortnightly using pitfall traps in the interior (under the canopy) as well as exterior (in the orchards lanes) soil. The samples were identified to the order level or taxonomic categories easiest to recognise, and two datasets were built (“management type” and “organic/non-organic”). A Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) was applied with cross validation by the leave-one-out (LOO) method, for all the scenarios analysed. The olive orchards under organic management registered greater abundance, diversity, and richness of orders. Also, significant differences between management types were detected with respect to the main groups, particularly between organic and non-organic. Formicidae and Coleoptera predominated in the interior and exterior soil, respectively. The soil-arthropod community considered at the order level proved useful to discriminate between management types, especially between organic and non-organic approaches. In light of the results, sampling of the interior soil and the use of the set of orders that significantly differ in the test of mean differences are suggested in order to optimise the discriminant analysis. In this way, classification accuracy reaches 100%, and 99% using cross validation with LOO.  相似文献

Forty-six organic olive orchards under different soil management systems were evaluated in the province of Córdoba (southern Spain) to assess the state of their soil properties and the degree of degradation of their topsoil, and the possibilities for monitoring any soil degradation risk. Our study indicated that 55% of the olive farms sampled (OF) presented a low soil degradation, in which most of their deficiencies were a low content in some soil nutrients such as P, which may be partly due to the moderate fertility of some soils in the area. This result could be explained by the low or moderate intensity of the farming systems used in a large part of the study area. Seven percent of the sampled OFs had a large number of physical, chemical and biological soil properties, that could be considered as being degraded, and these olive orchards were classified as seriously degraded. The remaining OFs were in an intermediate state. The degree of soil degradation was not correlated with any specific soil management method or with predicted soil erosion rates, suggesting that it was the result of specific and varied on-farm conditions difficult to detect without a field evaluation. Three soil degradation indexes were obtained through a principal component analysis of the soil properties analyzed. These indexes were able to distinguish between OFs with low soil degradation and those in a serious state of degradation. Two of the indexes are basically integrative ones that can be used in relatively large surveys considering a large number of soil properties. The third index developed used only three soil properties, organic C, water stable macroaggregates, and extractable P, and has the potential to be used as a relatively easy and inexpensive screening test of soil degradation for organic olive farms in the area.  相似文献

The Pampa region is the most important agricultural area in Argentina. Although intensive agricultural activity is leading to important levels of soil degradation, studies on the impact on soil fauna are scarce. Despite the environmental importance of collembolans, symphylans and pauropods in soil, information on the influence of land management on their population densities is poor, particularly in Neotropical agroecosystems. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different management systems on the density of collembolans, symphylans and pauropods. Population abundance of these arthropods was examined in a natural site and a cattle raising, a mixed and an agricultural management system on a Typic Hapludoll soil in La Colacha, Córdoba, Argentina. All the sites studied had the same land use history until approximately 50 years before sampling and have the same soil type. Total abundance of the studied groups varied in the different management systems. Our results suggest that conventional agricultural management tends to reduce the density of collembolans and pauropods. Our data do not support our hypothesis that the cattle raising management system constitutes an intermediate situation between the natural site and the high-input management systems. We conclude that the reduction of collembolan and pauropod densities in high-input management systems is largely explained by the mechanical and chemical perturbations produced by conventional agricultural management practices and by particular abiotic soil conditions present in the intensively managed sites that are unfavourable for these organisms. Surprisingly, symphylans were more abundant in the mixed management site. The implications of our findings on soil ecosystem functioning are discussed.  相似文献

Plant cover modifies the physicochemical properties of the soil surface, which results in an enrichment in organic matter and a greater infiltration. So, this study was conducted to determine if its establishment in olive groves was effective, compared to conventional tillage, for the reduction in pollution by soluble phosphorus (P). Surface runoff, soluble P and Olsen P losses in sediment were analyzed in three experiment fields of ecological olive trees in the province of Córdoba (Spain), from 1 June 2003 to 1 June 2005. The cover system reduced the total losses of both variables in the three plots (between 7.6% and 36.5% the dissolved P loss and between 16.3% and 56.4% that of the runoff), with a certain parallelism being observed in the time distribution of the losses in both soil management systems, with significant Spearman coefficients of correlation, ranging between 0.60 and 0.98. Over half the losses of the runoff and dissolved P were produced in two or three events for the two management systems. The establishment of plant cover altered the relative composition in the Olsen P loss (raising the proportion of soluble P) and usually increased the dissolved P rate. Finally, and although it is a positive technique and highly recommendable in the area’s olive groves, it was not completely effective in controlling water pollution in relation to the soluble P concentration, since this was over 0.11 mg l?1 in all the cases with a cover.  相似文献

Sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Miller) is the only native species of the genus Castanea in Europe. A collecting mission has been carried out in Andalusia (South of Spain) with the purpose to evaluate of the genetic variability of this species in this region. During the field trips, two different types of chestnut trees have been detected: one of clonal nature (varieties obtained by graft) and other of sexual nature (trees derived from nut). For the former, 156 trees were located in plantations in the Genal river Valley (Malaga) and the Natural Park of `Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche' (Huelva), where 43 varietal denominations were recorded. Thirty out of them had never been mentioned. For the latter, 29 stands were located in Almería, Córdoba, Granada, Jaén, and Málaga. This work reveal that this species present a high degree of genetic variability. Nevertheless, their preservation is seriously threatened in the most zones due to the varietal substitution, the low profit or the abandonment, which determinate the urgent necessity to safeguard these genetic resources.  相似文献

Two crop production systems, which differ on tillage and pesticides, were compared for biodiversity of soil microarthropod communities. A biodiversity index, which integrates different structure and density parameters (abundance, taxonomic richness, taxonomic diversity, coenotic diversity) was used. Results showed a greater biodiversity in minimum tillage systems compared to deep tillage systems. Pesticides seemed to be only a second order factor of variance on microarthropod biodiversity.  相似文献

Intensification of agricultural practices is leading to an increased rate of severe soil degradation in the central area of Argentina, with large areas being converted to arable lands. The application of different management practices to soil impacts edaphic mite populations by altering the organic inputs and by influencing the soil microhabitat. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the influence of three different land management practices on soil mite density in temperate agroecosystems of Córdoba, Argentina, in comparison with a natural soil. Standard abiotic soil properties were also analyzed. Six samples per plot and per sampling date were taken at bimonthly intervals from August 1999 to June 2001. A gradient of increasing soil degradation was evident in physical, chemical and physicochemical soil properties from natural to agricultural plots. Total mite density decreased as soil cultivation increased. However, different responses to land management were observed when comparing the different suborders of mites. Oribatida and Mesostigmata were more sensitive to the agricultural practices than Prostigmata and Astigmata. Densities of the last two suborders seemed to be unaffected by soil cultivation in some periods. Oribatida, Mesostigmata and pooled mite density showed a hump-backed relationship with management intensity, with a maximum in the cattle management. It is concluded that the influence of soil cultivation on soil mites as a whole was negative, with more intensively managed systems tending to reduce mite density, although different suborders were differentially affected by agricultural intensification. We suggest that the reduction of total mite, Oribatida and Mesostigmata densities in the high-input managements is mainly explained by the perturbations produced by conventional agricultural practices and by environmental soil conditions present in the intensively managed sites that were unfavorable for these groups of mites. The implication of the changes reported in mite abundances on soil processes is discussed.  相似文献

Chemical and biochemical properties as potential indicators of disturbances   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The response of a series of soil microbial, chemical, and enzymatic chacacteristics to two different tillage systems (conventional and no-tillage) and two crop rotations (continuous corn and soybean–corn) was evaluated in a long-term field experiment in the Rolling Pampas Region, Marcos Juárez, Córdoba, Argentina. The parameters studied included: oxidizable, soluble and respiration C, total and hydrolyzable N, microbial activity, ammonifiers, nitrifiers, cellulolytic and total microflora, protease and urease activities. After 15 years, oxidizable C, total N and hydrolyzable N showed no differences regarding no-tillage systems. However, differences were found regarding control soil. While soluble C did not exhibit any significant differences, respiration C and microbial activity were indicators sensitive to different treatments. Enzymatic activities, protease in particular, did reflect changes due to management. Fluctuation in microbial population counts were more related to plant residues than to tillage systems. Our previous studies of the native rhizobial population associated with peanut nodules in the Córdoba soils of Argentina revealed that this population is highly diverse and includes slow- and fast-growing isolates. The native fast-growing isolates NCHA22 and NET30 were selected on the basis of their plant growth promoting properties and their chromosomal genotypes were determined by 16S rDNA sequencing. NCHA22 and NET30 16S rDNA alleles were found to cluster with those of Rhizobium tropici group IIB and Rhizobium giardinii bv. giardinii strain H152, respectively. We have now characterized these isolates by analyzing the glnA and nifH genes to clarify their taxonomic position. These studies confirmed that fast-growing isolates belonging to species earlier described as bean symbionts were obtained from nodules of a leguminous plant that has been described as efficiently nodulated exclusively by slow-growing rhizobial strains.  相似文献

We studied the distribution with depth of the different forms of iron in two reddish brown (rubified) soils developed on hematite-free calcarenites in the Province of Córdoba, southern Spain. Hematite appeared in significant amounts in the A and B horizons of the soils and seemed to have originated mainly from the weathering of the Fe-bearing clay minerals (smectites). Because of their low contents of Fe, both the non-clay fraction and the carbonate of the parent material contributed little to Fe-oxide formation. The distribution with depth of goethite in the clay fractions suggested that part of the initial goethite had been lost and might have been altered to hematite.  相似文献

The Suquía is a semiarid (rainfall, 700-900 mm y-1), medium-size (7700 km2) riversystem located in central Argentina. Its mountainous upper catchment includes pristine areas aswell as a variety of human settlements and a reservoir lake. A large city (Córdoba, ca. 1.3million inhabitants) and a terminal hypersaline lake are included in the middle and lower basin.Total non-residual (TNR) heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Ni, Zn, Mn, and Fe) have been determined inriver bed sediments in two seasons (spring and autumn), seeking to establish the factors whichcontrol the temporal and spatial variability. The major findings were: a) concentrations of TNRmetals were, in general, higher during springtime than during autumn, particularly downstreamfrom the city of Córdoba; b) organic matter played a significant role as a controlling factorwherever it defined reducing conditions, lowering the concentrations of Mn and Fe hydrousoxides; c) a higher organic load (e.g., downstream the city) and more pronounced reducingconditions could be the causes for the increased Fe concentration, probably precipitated assulfides; d) organic matter exhibited a closer correlation with some TNR metals in autumn, probably caused by a larger capacity for complexation in the biologically-processed organicdebris; and, e) the existence of pristine areas in the drainage basin allowed for the calculation ofenrichment factors (EF) which show the significance of several environmental impacts in theSuquía system.  相似文献

With the objective of evaluating the utility of the amino acid profile in the characterization of honey samples, 39 honey samples of two different harvests from a particular production zone in Córdoba, Argentina, were analyzed. Multivariate statistical techniques, such as principal component analysis (PCA), cluster analysis (CA), and multiple correspondence analysis (MCA), were applied to verify the correlation among the amino acid profiles, pollen percentages, and different harvests. PCA, CA, and MCA demonstrate the presence of differences of amino acid profiles between samples of the two harvests, such differences being mainly due to differences in pollen availability. Variation of the flora surrounding the apiary due to agricultural practices makes the analysis of amino acid profile typical for those cases with stabilized flora.  相似文献

Human-modified tropical landscapes under semi-natural or agro-ecosystems often harbor biodiversity of significant conservation value. In the Western Ghats of India, these ecosystems also provide connectivity between protected areas and other remnant forests. We investigated the conservation value of these landscapes and agro-ecosystems using results from 35 studies covering 14 taxonomic groups. Large, conspicuous taxonomic groups and tree-covered land-use types have received much focus in this area of research in the Western Ghats. We computed a response ratio defined as the log ratio of species richness in human land use to species richness in forest control site from 17 studies. In a meta-analysis, we investigated variation of this ratio across studies with respect to three variables: taxonomic group, the land-use type sampled and the extent of forest cover within the study landscape. Higher forest cover within the landscape emerged as a major positive influence on biodiversity in human-modified landscapes for vertebrates and vegetation while no patterns emerged for invertebrates. Our results suggest that loss of remnant forest patches from these landscapes is likely to reduce biodiversity within agro-ecosystems and exacerbate overall biodiversity loss across the Western Ghats. Conservation of these remnant forest patches through protection and restoration of habitat and connectivity to larger forest patches needs to be prioritized. In the densely populated Western Ghats, this can only be achieved by building partnerships with local land owners and stakeholders through innovative land-use policy and incentive schemes for conservation.  相似文献

A critical handicap to tropical biodiversity conservation efforts in agroecosystems is the unknowns regarding the influence of landscape-scale factors on the persistence of species. To address these uncertainties, we explored two essential landscape-scale questions, within India’s biologically-rich Western Ghats, examining two nearby human-dominated landscapes that dramatically differed in their pattern of land cover. First, how does the proximity of intact forest patches affect bird community composition within agricultural landscapes? Second, can simple remote sensing-derived measures (brightness, wetness, and NDVI) be used to estimate native bird species composition within those landscapes? In both landscapes, as distance to intact forest decreased, the similarity in bird community composition between agricultural areas and intact forest increased. This suggests that the retention of tropical forest bird communities within human-dominated landscapes critically depends on the maintenance of nearby intact forest. In an answer to the second question, the remote sensing measures correlated with forest-affiliated avian species richness in only one of the two landscapes, reflecting an ecological difference between the two in the response of forest bird species to local agricultural conditions. In the landscape where a correlation was found, there was high variation in vegetative structure, which strongly impacted both the remote sensing measures and forest bird species richness. In the other landscape, forest species richness strongly correlated with changes in tree species composition in the agriculture, a factor that could not be detected by the remote sensing metrics. In order to successfully conserve biodiversity in tropical agricultural landscapes, our findings show that it is essential to conserve intact forest within those landscapes and to understand the effect of local agricultural practices on species.

Sloping and mountainous olive production systems are widespread, occupying large parts of the Mediterranean landscape prone to water erosion. Soil erosion, runoff, and soil water content patterns over a three-year period were monitored in erosion plots on a mountainside with rainfed olive (Olea europaea cv. Picual) trees under: 1) non-tillage with barley strips of 4 m width (BS); 2) non-tillage with native vegetation strips of 4 m width (NVS); and 3) non-tillage without plant strips (NT). The erosion plots, located in Lanjaron (Granada, south-eastern Spain), on a 30% slope, were 192 m2 in area. For assessing soil water dynamics in real-time and near-continuous soil water content measurements, multisensor capacitance probes were installed in the middle of plant strips and beneath the olive tree at five soil depths (10, 20, 30, 50, and 100 cm). The highest erosion and runoff rates were measured under NT, with a mean of 17.3 Mg ha-1 year-1 and 140.0 mm year-1, respectively, over the entire study period. The BS and NVS with respect to the NT reduced erosion by 71% and 59% and runoff by 95% and 94%, respectively. In general, greater available soil water content was found under BS than NVS and NT, especially beneath the olive tree canopies. These results supported the recommendation of non-tillage with barley strips in order to reduce erosion and to preserve soil water for trees in traditional mountainous olive-producing areas, where orchards cover vast tracts of land.  相似文献

The effects of land uses on soil erosion in Spain: A review   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Soil erosion is a key factor in Mediterranean environments, and is not only closely related to geoecological factors (lithology, topography, and climatology) but also to land-use and plant cover changes. The long history of human activity in Spain explains the development of erosion landscapes and sedimentary structures (recent alluvial plains, alluvial fans, deltas and flat valleys infilled of sediment). For example, the expansion of cereal agriculture and transhumant livestock between the 16th and 19th centuries resulted in episodes of extensive soil erosion. During the 20th century farmland abandonment prevailed in mountain areas, resulting in a reduction of soil erosion due to vegetation recolonization whereas sheet-wash erosion, piping and gullying affected abandoned fields in semi-arid environments. The EU Agrarian Policy and the strengthening of national and international markets encouraged the expansion of almond and olive orchards into marginal lands, including steep, stony hill slopes. Vineyards also expanded to steep slopes, sometimes on new unstable bench terraces, thus leading to increased soil erosion particularly during intense rainstorms. The expansion of irrigated areas, partially on salty and poorly structured soils, resulted in piping development and salinization of effluents and the fluvial network. The trend towards larger fields and farms in both dry farming and irrigated systems has resulted in a relaxation of soil conservation practices.  相似文献

Human land use, through forest management and conversion of natural habitats into agroecosystems, has often resulted in loss of biodiversity. Spiders are important predators in terrestrial ecosystems, biological control agents against pests in agroecosystems and forests, and useful indicators due to their sensibility to changes in habitat structure and microclimate. Effects of land use on spiders have been reviewed several times but existing reviews are narrative and usually focused on one single kind of management. We summarize the impacts of land use on spider abundance and species richness using meta-analysis. The main ecosystems where the effect of management on spiders has been studied were forests, agroecosystems and rangelands (including meadows and grasslands). Although our survey retrieved studies from all parts of the world and climatic zones, a dominance of studies from temperate habitats in Europe and North America was evident. The meta-analysis showed negative effects on spider species richness and abundance for agroecosystems and rangelands, but were less evident for forests. From 10 kinds of land management identified, all but forest plantation showed effects on spider richness or abundance. These land management scenarios affected either species richness (forest fragmentation and logging, farmland abandonment, and miscellaneous management including plowing, cutting and fire), or spider abundance (forest fragmentation, forest fire, conventional farming, insecticides, grazing, and farmland abandonment), but not both. Edge effects had contrasting effects depending on the ecosystem, affecting spider species richness in agroecosystems and abundance in rangelands and forests. Direct destruction of spiders or negative effects on habitat heterogeneity or prey populations were the most likely causes of the negative effects detected.  相似文献

The aim was to evaluate eight methods of boron (B) extraction in different soils from Córdoba and Sucre, Colombia. 37 samples were collected at a depth of 0–20 cm and carried to Soil and Water Laboratory of University of Córdoba for its chemical characterization. The available boron was extracted with the following methods: modified hot water, calcium chloride (CaCl2) 0.05, hydrochloric acid (HCl) 0.05, barium chloride (BaCl2) 0.006, manitol 0.05 + CaCl2 0.01, Ca(H2PO4)2H2O 0.008 in mol L?1, mehlich-1 and ammonium acetate (NH4OAc) (1.0 mol L?1, pH = 7.0). The major quantity of boron was extracted with mehlich-1, HCl 0.05 mol L?1 and hot water, extracting 0.36, 0.29 and 0.26 mg kg?1, respectively. The extracting solution that correlated with the hot water method was HCl 0.05 mol L?1 (r = 0.81); followed by Ca(H2PO4)2H2O 0.008 mol L?1 (r = 0.62) and mehlich-1 (r = 0.54). According to characteristic and heterogeneity of soils, we recommend HCl method to extract available boron.  相似文献
