Biochar addition to soils has been frequently proposed as a means to increase soil fertility and carbon (C) sequestration. However, the effect of biochar addition on greenhouse gas emissions from intensively managed soils under vegetable production at the field scale is poorly understood. The effects of wheat straw biochar amendment with mineral fertilizer or an enhanced‐efficiency fertilizer (mixture of urea and nitrapyrin) on N2O efflux and the net ecosystem C budget were investigated for an acidic soil in southeast China over a 1‐yr period. Biochar addition did not affect the annual N2O emissions (26–28 kg N/ha), but reduced seasonal N2O emissions during the cold period. Biochar increased soil organic C and CO2 efflux on average by 61 and 19%, respectively. Biochar addition greatly increased C gain in the acidic soil (average 11.1 Mg C/ha) compared with treatments without biochar addition (average ?2.2 Mg C/ha). Biochar amendment did not increase yield‐scaled N2O emissions after application of mineral fertilizer, but it decreased yield‐scaled N2O by 15% after nitrapyrin addition. Our results suggest that biochar amendment of acidic soil under intensive vegetable cultivation contributes to soil C sequestration, but has only small effects on both plant growth and greenhouse gas emissions.

Purpose

Crop straw and biochar application can potentially increase carbon sequestration and lead to changes in the microbial community in agricultural soils. Sequestration of CO2 by autotrophic microorganisms is key to biogeochemical carbon cycling in soil ecosystems. The effects of straw and its biochar, derived from slow pyrolysis, on CO2 fixation bacteria in sandy soils, remain unclear. Therefore, this study compared the response of abundance and community of CO2 fixation bacteria to the two straw application methods in a sandy agricultural soil. The overall aim of the study was to achieve an efficient use of straw residues for the soil sustainablility.

Materials and methods

We investigated the soil organic carbon content and autotrophic bacteria over four consecutive years (2014–2018) in a field experiment, including the following four treatments: whole maize straw amendment (S), whole maize straw translated biochar amendment (B), half biochar and half straw amendment (BS), and control (CK) without straw or biochar amendment. The autotrophic bacterial abundance and community structure were measured using molecular methods of real-time PCR, terminal restriction fragment length polymorphisms (T-RFLP), and a clone library targeting the large subunit gene (cbbL) of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase.

Results and discussion

The results showed that the content of soil total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) in B, S, and BS treatments was significantly increased compared with the CK treatment. Soil TOC and available potassium (AK) in the B treatment significantly increased by 15.4% and 23.3%, respectively, but soil bulk density, DOC, and MBC significantly decreased by 8.5%, 10.6%, and 14.5%, respectively, compared with the S treatment. The abundance of the cbbL gene as well as of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene increased significantly in straw or biochar application treatments as compared to the CK treatment. The B treatment, but not the BS treatment, significantly increased the cbbL gene abundance when compared to the S treatment. No significant differences were observed in the bacterial 16S rRNA gene abundance among the three straw or biochar applications. The application of straw biochar could increase the diversity of the autotrophic bacteria, which also altered the overall microbial composition. Physicochemical properties of the soil, such as soil pH, SOC, and bulk density, can help explain the shift in soil microbial composition observed in the study.

Conclusions

Taken together, our results suggest that straw biochar, rather than straw application, leads to an increase in the abundance and diversity of CO2-fixing bacteria, which would be advantageous for soil autotrophic CO2 fixation.

Rice paddy soils are characterized by anoxic conditions, anaerobic carbon turnover, and significant emissions of the greenhouse gas methane. A main source for soil organic matter in paddy fields is the rice crop residue that is returned to fields if not burned. We investigated as an alternative treatment the amendment of rice paddies with rice residues that have been charred to black carbon. This treatment might avoid various negative side effects of traditional rice residue treatments. Although charred biomass is seen as almost recalcitrant, its impact on trace gas (CO2, CH4) production and emissions in paddy fields has not been studied. We quantified the degradation of black carbon produced from rice husks in four wetland soils in laboratory incubations. In two of the studied soils the addition of carbonised rice husks resulted in a transient increase in carbon mineralisation rates in comparison to control soils without organic matter addition. After almost three years, between 4.4% and 8.5% of the black carbon added was mineralised to CO2 under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. The addition of untreated rice husks resulted in a strong increase in carbon mineralisation rates and in the same time period 77%-100% of the added rice husks were mineralised aerobically and 31%-54% anaerobically. The 13C-signatures of respired CO2 gave a direct indication of black carbon mineralisation to CO2. In field trials we quantified the impact of rice husk black carbon or untreated rice husks on soil respiration and methane emissions. The application of black carbon had no significant effect on soil respiration but significantly enhanced methane emissions in the first rice crop season. The additional methane released accounted for only 0.14% of black carbon added. If the same amount of organic carbon was added as untreated rice husks, 34% of the applied carbon was released as CO2 and methane in the first season. Furthermore, the addition of fresh harvest residues to paddy fields resulted in a disproportionally high increase in methane emissions. Estimating the carbon budget of the different rice crop residue treatments indicated that charring of rice residues and adding the obtained black carbon to paddy fields instead of incorporating untreated harvest residues may reduce field methane emissions by as much as 80%. Hence, the production of black carbon from rice harvest residues could be a powerful strategy for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from rice fields.

Abstract

An ideal state for agroecosystems to mitigate global warming should include both decreasing CO2 and CH4 emissions and increasing soil carbon storage. Two-year field experiments were carried out to examine the effects of water management (continuous flooding [CF] and Eh control [EH]) and rice straw management (application [+S] and removal [–S]) on the soil carbon budget in a single-cropping paddy field in Japan. The EH water management based on soil redox potential that the authors have proposed decreased the total CH4 emission during the rice growing period compared with CF. The +S increased CO2 emission as soil respiration during the non-flooded fallow period compared with –S, but also increased straw residues in the soil. However, there was little evidence for sequential carbon accumulation in the soil over the year by +S. The resultant annual budget of soil carbon was a loss of 32–103 g C m?2 in the EH+S treatment compared with a loss of 166–188 g C m?2 in the CF–S treatment. Taking into account the global warming potentials, the EH+S treatment also decreased the total CO2-equivalent emission compared with the CF–S treatment. Consequently, a combination of appropriate water management and straw application will be an effective option in decreasing both CO2-equivalent emission and sustaining soil carbon storage.

Biochar application has the potential to improve soil fertility and increase soil carbon stock, especially in tropical regions. Information on the temperature sensitivity of carbon dioxide(CO_2) evolution from biochar-amended soils at very high temperatures, as observed for tropical surface soils, is limited but urgently needed for the development of region-specific biochar management targeted to optimize biochar effects on soil functions. Here, we investigated the temperature sensitivity of soil respiration to the addition of different rates of Miscanthus biochar(0, 6.25, 12.5, and 25 Mg ha~(-1)) in two types of soils with contrasting textures. Biochar-amended soil treatments and their controls were incubated at constant temperatures of 20, 30, and 40℃. Overall, our results show that: i) considering data from all treatments and temperatures, the addition of biochar decreased soil CO_2 emissions when compared to untreated soils;ii) CO_2 emissions from biochar-amended soils had a higher temperature sensitivity than those from biochar-free soils; iii) the temperature sensitivity of soil respiration in sandy soils was higher than that in clay soils; and iv) for clay soils, relative increases in soil CO_2 emissions from biochar-amended soils were higher when the temperature increased from 30 to 40℃, while for sandy soils, the highest temperature responses of soil respiration were observed when increasing the temperature from 20 to 30℃. Together, these findings suggest a significantly reduced potential to increase soil organic carbon stocks when Miscanthus biochar is applied to tropical soils at high surface temperatures, which could be counteracted by the soil-and weather-specific timing of biochar application.

A short-term incubation study was carried out to investigate the effect of biochar addition to soil on CO2 emissions, microbial biomass, soil soluble carbon (C) nitrogen (N) and nitrate–nitrogen (NO3–N). Four soil treatments were investigated: soil only (control); soil + 5% biochar; soil + 0.5% wheat straw; soil + 5% biochar + 0.5% wheat straw. The biochar used was obtained from hardwood by pyrolysis at 500 °C. Periodic measurements of soil respiration, microbial biomass, soluble organic C, N and NO3–N were performed throughout the experiment (84 days). Only 2.8% of the added biochar C was respired, whereas 56% of the added wheat straw C was decomposed. Total net CO2 emitted by soil respiration suggested that wheat straw had no priming effect on biochar C decomposition. Moreover, wheat straw significantly increased microbial C and N and at the same time decreased soluble organic N. On the other hand, biochar did not influence microbial biomass nor soluble organic N. Thus it is possible to conclude that biochar was a very stable C source and could be an efficient, long-term strategy to sequester C in soils. Moreover, the addition of crop residues together with biochar could actively reduce the soil N leaching potential by means of N immobilization.

Abstract

A short-term study was conducted to investigate the greenhouse gas emissions in five typical soils under two crop residue management practices: raw rice straw (Oryza sativa L., cv) and its derived biochar application. Rice straw and its derived biochar (two biochars, produced at 350 and 500°C and referred to as BC350 and BC500, respectively) were incubated with the soils at a 5% (weight/weight) rate and under 70% water holding capacity for 28 d. Incorporation of BC500 into soils reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission in all five soils by 4?40% and 62?98%, respectively, compared to the untreated soils, whereas methane (CH4) emission was elevated by up to about 2 times. Contrary to the biochars, direct return of the straw to soil reduced CH4 emission by 22?69%, whereas CO2 increased by 4 to 34 times. For N2O emission, return of rice straw to soil reduced it by over 80% in two soils, while it increased by up to 14 times in other three soils. When all three greenhouse gases were normalized on the CO2 basis, the global warming potential in all treatments followed the order of straw > BC350 > control > BC500 in all five soils. The results indicated that turning rice straw into biochar followed by its incorporation into soil was an effective measure for reducing soil greenhouse gas emission, and the effectiveness increased with increasing biochar production temperature, whereas direct return of straw to soil enhanced soil greenhouse gas emissions.

To evaluate the benefits of application of biochar to coastal saline soil for climate change mitigation, the effects on soil organic carbon (SOC), greenhouse gases (GHGs) and crop yields were investigated. Biochar was applied at 16 t ha?1 to study its effects on crop growth (Experiment I). The effects of biochar (0, 3.2, 16 and 32 t ha?1) and corn stalk (7.8 t ha?1) on SOC and GHGs were studied using 13C stable isotope technology and a static chamber method, respectively (Experiment II). Biochar increased grain mass per plant of the wheat by 27.7% and increased SOC without influencing non‐biochar SOC. On average, 92.3% of the biochar carbon and 16.8% of corn‐stalk carbon were sequestered into the soil within 1 year. The cumulative emissions of CO2, CH4 and N2O were not affected significantly by biochar but cornstalk application increased N2O emissions by 17.5%. The global warming mitigation potential of the biochar treatments (?3.84 to ?3.17 t CO2‐eq. ha?1 t?1 C) was greater than that of the corn stalk treatment (?0.11 t CO2‐eq ha?1 t?1 C). These results suggest that biochar application improves saline soil productivity and soil carbon sequestration without increasing GHG emissions.

An incubation experiment was carried out with maize (Zea mays L.) leaf straw to analyze the effects of mixing the residues with soil and N amendment on the decomposition process. In order to distinguish between soil effects and nitrogen effects for both the phyllospheric microorganisms already present on the surface of maize straw and soil microorganisms the N amendment was applied in two different placements: directly to the straw or to the soil. The experiment was performed in dynamic, automated microcosms for 22 days at 15 °C with 7 treatments: (1) untreated soil, (2) non-amended maize leaf straw without soil, (3) N amended maize leaf straw without soil, (4) soil mixed with maize leaf straw, (5) N amended soil, (6) N amended soil mixed with maize leaf straw, and (7) soil mixed with N amended maize leaf straw. 15NH415NO3 (5 at%) was added. Gas emissions (CO2, 13CO2 and N2O) were continuously recorded throughout the experiment. Microbial biomass C, biomass N, ergosterol, δ13C of soil organic C and of microbial biomass C as well as 15N in soil total N, mineral N and microbial biomass N were determined in soil samples at the end of the incubation. The CO2 evolution rate showed a lag-phase of two days in the non-amended maize leaf straw treatment without soil, which was completely eliminated when mineral N was added. The addition of N generally increased the CO2 evolution rate during the initial stages of maize leaf straw decomposition, but not the cumulative CO2 production. The presence of soil caused roughly a 50% increase in cumulative CO2 production within 22 days in the maize straw treatments due to a slower decrease of CO2 evolution after the initial activity peak. Since there are no limitations of water or N, we suggest that soil provides a microbial community ensuring an effective succession of straw decomposing microorganisms. In the treatments where maize and soil was mixed, 75% of microbial biomass C was derived from maize. We concluded that this high contribution of maize using microbiota indicates a strong influence of organisms of phyllospheric origin to the microbial community in the soil after plant residues enter the soil.

Like straw, biochar incorporation can influence soil microorganisms and enzyme activities and soil carbon(C) responses; however, few studies have compared the various effects of straw and biochar and the underlying mechanisms. An experiment was performed to study the changes in soil respiration(SR) and soil organic C(SOC) fluxes in response to the incorporation of three kinds of straw(reed, smooth cordgrass, and rice) and their pyrolyzed products(biochars) at Chongming Island, China. In addition, the microbial activity and community structure of some amended soils were also analyzed to clarify the mechanisms of these responses. The results showed that all biochar incorporation(BC) induced lower SR than the corresponding unpyrolyzed straw incorporation(ST), and the average SR in the soils following BC and ST during the experimental periods was 21.69 and 65.32 μmol CO_2 m~(-2)s~(-1), respectively.Furthermore, the average SOC content was 16.97 g kg~(-1) following BC, which was higher than that(13.71 g kg~(-1)) following ST,indicating that compared to ST, BC was a low-C strategy, even after accounting for the C loss during biochar production. Among the BC treatments, reed-BC induced the lowest SR(17.04 μmol CO_2 m~(-2)s~(-1)), whereas smooth cordgrass-BC induced the highest SR(27.02 μmol CO_2 m~(-2)s~(-1)). Furthermore, in contrast with ST, BC significantly increased the abundance of some bacteria with poorer mineralization or better humification ability, which led to lower SR. The lower easily oxidizable C(EOC) and higher total C contents of biochars induced lower SR and higher SOC in the soil following BC compared to that following ST. Among the BC treatments, the higher total nitrogen content of rice biochar led to significantly higher soil microbial biomass, and the lower EOC content of reed biochar led to lower soil microbial activity and SR.

The application of biochar produced from wood and crop residues, such as sawdust, straw, sugar bagasse and rice hulls, to highly weathered soils under tropical conditions has been shown to influence soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, there is a lack of data concerning GHG emissions from soils amended with biochar derived from manure, and from soils outside tropical and subtropical regions. The objective of this study was to quantify the effect on emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) following the addition, at a rate of 18 t ha−1, of two different types of biochar to an Irish tillage soil. A soil column experiment was designed to compare three treatments (n = 8): (1) non-amended soil (2) soil mixed with biochar derived from the separated solid fraction of anaerobically digested pig manure and (3) soil mixed with biochar derived from Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis). The soil columns were incubated at 10 °C and 75% relative humidity, and leached with 80 mL distilled water, twice per week. Following 10 weeks of incubation, pig manure, equivalent to 170 kg nitrogen ha−1 and 36 kg phosphorus ha−1, was applied to half of the columns in each treatment (n = 4). Gaseous emissions were analysed for 28 days following manure application. Biochar addition to the soil increased N2O emissions in the pig manure-amended column, most likely as a result of increased denitrification caused by higher water filled pore space and organic carbon (C) contents. Biochar addition to soil also increased CO2 emissions. This was caused by increased rates of C mineralisation in these columns, either due to mineralisation of the labile C added with the biochar, or through increased mineralisation of the soil organic matter.

Application of crop residues and its biochar produced through slow pyrolysis can potentially increase carbon (C) sequestration in agricultural production systems. The impact of crop residue and its biochar addition on greenhouse gas emission rates and the associated changes of soil gross N transformation rates in agricultural soils are poorly understood. We evaluated the effect of wheat straw and its biochar applied to a Black Chernozemic soil planted to barley, two growing seasons or 15 months (at the full-bloom stage of barley in the second growing season) after their field application, on CO2 and N2O emission rates, soil inorganic N and soil gross N transformation rates in a laboratory incubation experiment. Gross N transformation rates were studied using the 15N isotope pool dilution method. The field experiment included four treatments: control, addition of wheat straw (30 t ha?1), addition of biochar pyrolyzed from wheat straw (20 t ha?1), and addition of wheat straw plus its biochar (30 t ha?1 wheat straw + 20 t ha?1 biochar). Fifteen months after their application, wheat straw and its biochar addition increased soil total organic C concentrations (p?=?0.039 and <0.001, respectively) but did not affect soil dissolved organic C, total N and NH4 +-N concentrations, and soil pH. Biochar addition increased soil NO3 ?-N concentrations (p?=?0.004). Soil CO2 and N2O emission rates were increased by 40 (p?p?=?0.03), respectively, after wheat straw addition, but were not affected by biochar application. Straw and its biochar addition did not affect gross and net N mineralization rates or net nitrification rates. However, biochar addition doubled gross nitrification rates relative to the control (p?2 and N2O emissions and enhance soil C sequestration. However, the implications of the increased soil gross nitrification rate and NO3 ?-N in the biochar addition treatment for long-term NO3 ?-N dynamics and N2O emissions need to be further studied.

Intensive vegetable crop systems are rapidly developing, with consequences for greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions, nitrogen leaching and soil carbon. We undertook a field trial to explore the effect of biochar application (0, 10, 20 and 40 t ha−1) on these factors in lettuce, water spinach and ice plant rotation. Our results show that the 20 and 40 t ha−1 soil treatments resulted in the SOC content being 26.3% and 29.8% higher than the control (0 t ha−1), respectively, with significant differences among all treatments (p < .05). Biochar application caused N2O emissions to decrease during the lettuce and water spinach seasons, by 1.5%–33.6% and 12.4%–40.5%, respectively, compared the control, with the 20 t ha−1 application rate resulting in the lowest N2O emissions. Biochar also decreased the dissolved nitrogen (DN) concentration in leachate by 9.8%–36.2%, following a 7.3%–19.9% reduction in dissolved nitrogen in the soil. Similarly, biochar decreased the nitrate (NO3) concentrations in leachate by 3.9%–30.2%, following a 3.8%–16.7% reduction in the soil nitrate level. Overall, straw biochar applied at rate of 20 t ha−1 produced the lowest N2O emissions and N leaching, while, increasing soil carbon.
