A systematic survey was conducted during two spells of 5 years each (1986–1990 and 1993–1997) to study the prevalence of parasitoses with particular reference to gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes and flukes in dairy animals (crossbred and native cattle, and buffaloes) belonging to 12 villages in the Kangra valley (Himachal Pradesh). Flukes (Fasciola, amphistomes and Dicrocoelium) and strongyles were the most important parasitic infections. Fasciola was endemic throughout the year, with a higher percentage infection in buffaloes than in cattle. Other fluke and nematode infections showed a seasonal pattern in prevalence, with a small peak in March–April followed by a high peak in July–September. The faecal egg counts (eggs per gram, epg) of flukes (Fasciola/amphistomes) ranged from 50 to 300 in cattle and 50 to 400 in buffaloes, with high loads during the rainy and post-rainy seasons. The GI nematode egg counts (excluding Toxocara) revealed a similar trend, with the overall monthly mean epg ranging from 85 to 1720 in cattle and 90 to 1625 in buffaloes, with a high peak during the months of July to September. On coproculture of positive samples, the nematode infections in order of prevalence were: Strongyloides, Trichostrongylus, Haemonchus, Oesophagostomum, Bunostomum and Mecistocirrus. The occurrence of internal parasites in Washinton cattle was estimated. During the survey period in 1972 and 1973, more than 3,700 fecal samples from 29 herds and 4 feedlots, and viscera from 55 cattle were examined. The percentage of fecal samples with parasite eggs or oocysts from herds was as follows: oocysts, 77%; "strongyline" eggs, 44%; Nematodirus eggs, 3%; Moniezia eggs, 3%; Fasciola eggs, 2%; Trichuris eggs, 2%; and Dictyocaulus larvae, 1%. The fecal samples from feedlots contained principally strongyline eggs which varied markedly in numbers among groups of cattle in the lots. The predominant parasite in viscera was Ostertagia spp, which was recovered from all of the cattle examined. Other parasites identified in the survey were found less frequently in these examinations. Cattle in dairy and beef operations utilizing irrigated pastures were particularly prone to Fasciola infections, and more strongyline eggs were observed there than in fecal samples from other management systems. Seasonal fluctuations in numbers of strongyline and Fasciola eggs were pronounced.  相似文献

Results of a survey of cattle producers in south eastern Queensland in 1982 concerning cattle tick control have been compared with those of a similar survey carried out in 1977-78. During the interval between these surveys the proportion of beef farms with tick resistant (Bos indicus infusion) cattle as the main breed had increased from 47.8% to 60.0%. Chemical control methods had improved but many producers were continuing to treat their cattle more often than necessary. Over the period there was an increase in the proportion of farms with small numbers of animals, and 30% of the farms had less than 50 cattle.  相似文献

A survey was conducted from 1986 through 1987, for which an ELISA was used to obtain information on the prevalence of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis infection in cattle of Florida. Results revealed prevalence of 8.6% in beef cattle and 17.1% in dairy cattle. In beef and dairy cattle, prevalence increased with increasing herd size. It was concluded that ELISA-detectable circulating antibodies to M paratuberculosis are widespread in cattle of Florida.  相似文献

A survey of gastrointestinal parasites in Saskatchewan beef herds was conducted over the summer of 2014. Fecal samples were collected on 3 occasions during the summer grazing season from beef cows and calves from 14 herds. The mean number of strongylid eggs per gram of feces recovered from calves increased 9-fold (95% CI: 4.5 to 18) over the summer period, while egg counts in the cows remained constant over the same period. The prevalence and infection intensities of gastrointestinal nematode parasites in cow-calf herds in Saskatchewan were comparable to what is seen in cattle grazing in the northern regions of the United States and for which anthelmintic treatments have resulted in positive production benefits.  相似文献

[目的]为了解芒市肉牛肠道寄生虫的感染情况,为其寄生虫病的防治提供参考。[方法]从云南省德宏州肉牛场采集191份新鲜粪样,采用饱和盐水漂浮法和自然沉淀法检查寄生虫的感染情况。[结果]共有124份样品检测出寄生虫感染,总感染率为64.92%,检出球虫、线虫、吸虫,其感染率分别为30.89%、4.19%、15.71%,混合感染率为14.41%。不同品种的肉牛之间寄生虫感染存在显著差异(P<0.05),不同养殖场、不同性别和不同年龄的肉牛之间寄生虫感染无显著性差异(P>0.05)。[结论]芒市肉牛寄生虫感染较为严重,其球虫的感染尤为突出,应定期驱虫和加强综合防治来促进肉牛的健康养殖。  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a survey of 1021 cattle in the southeastern area of Nigeria during August–October 1990 (wet season) and January–March 1991 (dry season) to study the effects of season, ecological zone, management system, breed and age on the occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites (GIP).

Strongyles (mainly Haemonchus spp.) were the commonest GIP (prevalence 47.8%; 95% CI; 44.8–51%; mean eggs per gram (epg) 387 ± SE 21.3) followed by coccidia (3.6%; 95% CI, 2.6–5%; mean oocysts per gram (opg) 2077 ± 778.4). The prevalence of other parasites encountered was comparatively very low. More infections were present in the wet than in the dry season (P<0.01). Whereas a higher prevalence (P<0.01) of strongyle infection was recorded in nomadic herds, that of coccidia was higher in sedentary herds. The prevalence of strongyle infection was lower in young animals (P<0.05), but they had higher epg (P<0.01) and also higher coccidia prevalences (P<0.01) than adults. Friesian and N'dama breeds under improved management in modern farms had lower strongyle and higher coccidia infections compared with zebu and muturu kept under the traditional management system The distribution of infection by ecological zone did not show any consistent trend, and this was attributed to the uneven distribution of the cattle breeds amongst the different zones.  相似文献

Internal parasitism is a pervasive constant that reduces returns in beef cattle production. Parasitism may influence production sufficiently so that data derived investigating performance response will be erroneous. The interaction of internal parasites of cattle with other facets of their lives makes it imperative that more parasite research be done on cattle to consider their impact. Results of trials designed to determine forage production at various stocking densities may not reflect the nutritive value of the forage, but instead the severity of parasite exposure. Relative resistance or susceptibility to certain parasites vary with the breed of livestock and the species of parasite. Extensive work to evaluate the ability of various breeds and sires to influence parasitic numbers has been conducted in sheep but not in cattle. Some parasite trials have ignored the effects of nutrition on the establishment and retention of parasites. This becomes especially important where multiple parasite exposure may occur. Susceptible cattle, even on an optimal diet, will become parasitized, but if reexposed to the same species of parasite, cattle on an optimal diet may be able to resist reinfection, whereas those on deficient diets will not.  相似文献

Prior to establishing a control and prevention program for Johne's disease in cattle in Galicia (northwest Spain), a survey was conducted to estimate the prevalence of the disease. For this survey, 61,069 animals of at least 1-year of age from 2735 randomly selected herds were bled and samples analyzed with a commercial ELISA. The estimated true individual-level prevalences – assuming the manufacturer's reported test sensitivity of 48.5% and specificity of 98.9% – were 3.02% in dairy cattle, 1.03% in beef cattle and 2.83% in animals from farms with both dairy and beef cattle. True herd prevalences (with herds declared positive if one or more animals tested positive) were 10.69% for dairy herds, 0% for beef herds and 2.71% for mixed herds. When herds were declared positive if at least two animals tested positive, true herd prevalences were 14.75% for dairy herds, 1.47% for beef herds and 12.01% for mixed herds. Assuming a higher specificity of 99.4%, true individual-level prevalences increased to 4.03% in dairy herds, 2.07% in beef herds and 3.84% in mixed herds. Herd prevalences were 27.77%/18.79%, 2.78%/2.40% and 5.70%/12.24% (using the one/two-animal cut-offs) in dairy, beef and mixed herds, respectively. In conclusion, these results seem to indicate that a small percentage of cows and a rather high percentage of dairy herds in this region are MAP-seropositive.  相似文献

Sub-clinical parasitism in spring-born single suckled beef calves was investigated from the middle of their first grazing season until weaning or housing later the same year. The study was conducted on four beef suckler herds in southern England over a 3-year period and involved a total of 334 spring-born beef suckler calves and their dams. The animals were grazed extensively on pastures naturally infected with nematode larvae. At the start of each period of observation, faecal samples were taken from calves and cows and subjected to routine worm egg counts; calves were re-sampled at the end of the grazing season.In July in each year and at each location the calves were ranked by initial weight within sex, paired according to rank and randomly allocated to either an untreated control group or a group in which the calves were each treated with an ivermectin sustained-release (SR) bolus. The calves in both trial groups, and their dams, were grazed together until weaning or housing. The calves were weighed at the initial allocation and at the end of the study. The adult cows were not treated with any anthelmintic during the study.The faecal nematode egg counts (FECs) conducted in July showed that the suckler cows were excreting worm eggs at low concentrations: range 0-100 eggs per gram (epg), with one individual count of 500epg, 88% of the cows sampled had counts of <50epg. Similarly, the counts from the calf samples were fairly low in July: range 0-250epg, 73% of the calves sampled had counts of <50epg. By the end of the grazing season, the faecal samples from the untreated control calves showed higher values: range 0-650epg, with only 58% having an epg of <50.The average rate of daily liveweight gain in the untreated heifer calves was 0.79kg per day, the corresponding figure for the heifer calves treated with the ivermectin SR bolus in mid-summer was 0.88kg per day; the difference of 90g per day was significantly different (P=0.0118). The average rate of daily liveweight gain in the untreated bull calves was 0.91kg per day, the corresponding figure for the bull calves treated with the ivermectin SR bolus in mid-summer was 1.01kg per day; the difference was significantly different (P=0.0169).  相似文献

AIM: To provide information on current farmers’ opinions and farming practices thought to be related to anthelmintic resistance, and to test for associations between the presence of anthelmintic resistance and management practices on beef cattle- rearing farms in the North Island of New Zealand.

METHODS: A study using an interview-based questionnaire about management of internal parasites was conducted on 62 beef cattle-rearing farms in the North Island of New Zealand, using case-control analyses to test for associations between management practices and the presence or absence of resistance to ivermectin or albendazole. Resistance was inferred from faecal nematode egg count (FEC) reduction (FECR) tests (FECRTs) when there was <90% reduction in FEC 7-10 days after treatment of calves <12 months of age.

RESULTS: Of the 59 farmers who completed the questionnaire, most (n=40) ranked parasites highly, and at about the same level as quality and quantity of feed, as important production-limiting factors for their enterprises. In contrast, anthelmintic resistance was not perceived to be a problem on 13 farms, and its importance was rated low on 24, moderate on 15, and high on only six farms. Despite all farms having planned parasite control programmes, there was heavy reliance on clinical signs of parasitism to determine frequency of treatments. About one in three farmers with beef breeder cows routinely treated their calves at marking, one in five treated mixed-age cows, and almost half treated rising 2-year-old cows before calving. One in four farmers used anthelmintics on calves on 8–12 occasions in their first year of life. Co-grazing with other species was rare, but follow-on grazing within 3 months after older cattle or sheep was common. On most farms, grazing cattle was restricted to part of the farm, a finding with implications for parasite control and persistence of larvae in refugia. Macrocyclic lactone (ML) anthelmintics or their combinations with other action families were currently, and for the past 5 years, used more frequently than benzimidazoles and levamisole, and benzimidazole-levami- sole combinations. The prevalence of resistance to ivermectin was high (82%) and no plausible model of associations could be constructed from the data. The prevalence of resistance to albendazole was 60%, and the risk of resistance increased as the number of rising 1-year-old cattle present mid-winter increased, and decreased as the number of breeding cows >2 years old present mid-winter increased.

CONCLUSION: It is clear that in practice anthelmintic resistance is a secondary consideration to obtaining productivity advantages from the use of anthelmintics in beef cattle. Farmers’ opinions were divided on many issues and the overall impres- sion was of confused and diverse thinking regarding the principles of the use of anthelmintics. The overall outlook regarding anthelmintic resistance in cattle is bleak unless the need for integrated and long-term research activities is acted upon soon.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to compare the occurrence and the genotypes and species of Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. in beef and dairy cattle from farms in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, Ontario, in an effort to determine the potential for zoonotic transmission from these animals. Pooled manure samples were collected from 45 dairy cattle farms and 30 beef cattle farms. The presence of Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts was determined by immunofluorescence microscopy, while nested-PCR and DNA sequencing were used to determine genotypes and species. The overall farm prevalence was very high for both Giardia and Cryptosporidium, and was similar for dairy cattle farms (96 and 64%, respectively) and beef cattle farms (97 and 63%, respectively). However, on dairy cattle farms, G. duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. were detected in 44% and 6% of total pooled pen manure samples, respectively, with the occurrence of both parasites being generally higher in calves than in older animals. Most Giardia isolates were identified as either the host-adapted genotype G. duodenalis Assemblage E or the zoonotic Assemblage B. Cryptosporidium parvum and Cryptosporidium andersoni were the most frequently identified species in dairy cattle, while the non-zoonotic species Cryptosporidium ryanae and Cryptosporidium bovis were also found. On beef cattle farms, 72% and 27% of the total pooled pen manure samples were positive for Giardia and Cryptosporidium, respectively, with no obvious correlation with age. All Giardia isolates in beef cattle were identified as G. duodenalis Assemblage E, while all Cryptosporidium isolates were identified by sequence analysis as C. andersoni, although microscopic analyses, and subsequent restriction fragment length polymorphism analyses, indicated that other Cryptosporidium species were also present. The results of this study indicate that although Giardia and Cryptosporidium were identified in a higher overall percentage of the pooled beef cattle manure samples than in dairy cattle, firmly established zoonotic genotypes and species were much more common in dairy cattle than in beef cattle in this region. Dairy cattle, and especially dairy calves, may, therefore, pose a greater risk of infection to humans than beef cattle. However, these results may also provide evidence of potential zooanthroponotic transmission (human to animal).  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the biocontainment, biosecurity, and security practices at beef feedyards in the Central Plains of the United States. DESIGN: Survey. SAMPLE POPULATION: Managers of feedyards in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas that feed beef cattle for finish before slaughter; feedyards had to have an active concentrated animal feeding operation permit with a 1-time capacity of >or= 1,000 cattle. PROCEDURES: A voluntary survey of feedyard personnel was conducted. Identified feedyard personnel were interviewed and responses regarding facility design, security, employees, disease preparedness, feedstuffs, hospital or treatment systems, sanitation, cattle sources, handling of sick cattle, and disposal of carcasses were collected in a database questionnaire. RESULTS: The survey was conducted for 106 feedyards with a 1-time capacity that ranged from 1,300 to 125,000 cattle. Feedyards in general did not have high implementation of biocontainment, biosecurity, or security practices. Smaller feedyards were, in general, less likely to use good practices than were larger feedyards. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results of the survey provided standard practices for biocontainment, biosecurity, and security in feedyards located in Central Plains states. Information gained from the survey results can be used by consulting veterinarians and feedyard managers as a basis for discussion and to target training efforts.  相似文献

A seroepidemiological survey of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection was conducted in Japan in 2007 using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and an agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test. A total of 5420 cattle (dairy, 3966; breeding beef, 797; fattening beef, 657) from 209 farms in seven prefectures in Japan were tested. The overall prevalence of BLV infection was 28.6%. The prevalence of BLV infection in dairy cattle (34.7%) was higher than for both fattening beef cattle (7.9%) and breeding beef cattle (16.3%). Age-specific prevalence showed that BLV prevalence increased with age in all types of cattle and was notably different between dairy and beef cattle under 1 year of age. Among 207 farms, 141 herds (68.1%) had one or more positive animals. The proportion of these positive farms was significantly higher among dairy farms (79.1%) than among beef breeding farms (39.5%) and beef fattening farms (51.9%) (P < 0.001). Dairy farms (40.5%) also showed a significantly higher within-herd prevalence than beef breeding (27.4%) and fattening (14.9%) farms (P = 0.001). This study indicated that BLV is more widely spread in dairy cattle than in beef breeding cattle in Japan. Given the prevalence of BLV infection in dairy and beef cattle was 8- and 1.7-fold higher, respectively, than rates previously found in 1980–1982, BLV appears to be spreading particularly among the dairy cattle population during the last two decades. Further investigation is required to determine the risk factors necessary to control BLV infection that take into account the different farming practices that exist between dairy and beef sectors.  相似文献

Postmortem proteolysis is an important determinant of beef tenderness. Caspase 3 is a protease that functions in apoptosis and has been shown to degrade myofibrillar proteins. Our objective was to evaluate whether caspase 3 activity is related to beef tenderness and muscle growth, and whether caspase 3 is activated in postmortem beef muscle. In experiment 1, longissimus thoracis (LT) and sternomandibularis muscle samples were obtained at 0, 0.25, 1, 3, 24, 72, and 240 h postmortem from 5 steers. In experiment 2, a group of 40 beef cattle was slaughtered at the University of Wyoming Meat Lab with 10 steers of different tenderness and growth characteristics chosen for the analysis of caspase 3 activity in the LT. In experiment 3, 10 steers with different tenderness but matched growth characteristics were chosen for analyses. In experiment 1, no significant activation (P = 0.70) of caspase 3 activity was detected; only a decreased activity at 72 (P = 0.05) and 240 h (P = 0.02) postmortem was observed. Western blot analysis of both muscle samples showed only the pro-caspase 3 form and failed to detect the activated enzyme. In experiment 2, caspase 3 activity in the LT immediately postmortem was greater (P = 0.05) for the cattle with increased Warner-Bratzler shear force values. No difference in caspase 3 activity was detected for experiment 3. Our results demonstrate that caspase 3 activity is not activated, with its activity decreasing with time postmortem, and caspase 3 activity is not associated with Warner-Bratzler shear force at slaughter. Therefore, caspase 3 is not anticipated to be involved in postmortem tenderization of beef.  相似文献

The overall prevalence of fascioliasis in beef cattle found in an abattoir survey completed in May 1983 in southern Queensland, was 1.1%. Prevalence was 36% in the Stanthorpe Shire, varied from greater than 1 to 10% in 12 shires and was 1% or less in 24 shires. Fascioliasis was not recorded from the other 46 shires in the area of the survey. Prevalence was less than 1% in female cattle of all ages. In males, prevalence increased with age from 0.6% in 17-month-old cattle to 4.7% in 4-year-old cattle. The differences in sex-specific prevalences may be due to differences in susceptibility to the parasite between sexes, differences in susceptibility to the parasite between sexes, differences in management between sexes, or artefacts associated with sampling for a disease of very low prevalence. The presence of the exotic snail species, Lymnaea columella and L. viridis was confirmed in southern Queensland in 1977. These snails are suitable intermediate hosts for Fasciola hepatica and may widen the endemic area for liver fluke because of their more aquatic character and greater tolerance to high temperatures than L. tomentosa, the traditional snail host in Queensland. We suggest that introduced snails have not yet had a substantial impact on the importance of fascioliasis to the beef industry of southern Queensland. The survey provides baseline data for the future monitoring of this potentially important parasitic disease.  相似文献

Infections with internal parasites are one of the most important causes of reduced productivity in first-grazing season cattle (FGSC). In conventional herds, nematode infections can be controlled by prophylactic anthelmintic treatments, but this is prohibited in organic production. The purpose of this investigation was to monitor the status of internal parasitism on 15 organic cattle enterprises in southwestern Sweden during the 1997 and 1998 grazing seasons, and to estimate the benefits of some management practices in parasite control. On each farm, the numbers of Eimeria alabamensis oocysts per gram of (opg) faeces were counted in seven fresh dung pats collected from the paddock 8-10 days after the turnout of FGSC. Faecal samples from 5 to 15 FGSC were also analysed for nematode eggs per gram (epg) faeces at four occasions during each grazing season. In addition, the FGSC and one group of second-grazing season cattle (SGSC) were weighed at turnout and housing and at the same time blood samples were collected, and analysed for serum pepsinogen concentration and antibodies against the lungworm, Dictyocaulus viviparus. On seven farms, 1-6 samples with more than 100000 opg were found, indicating considerable pasture contamination by E. alabamensis. However, clinical signs of coccidiosis were not observed. The highest outputs of nematode eggs were observed 45-55 days after turnout. More than 500 epg were only observed in 12 (2.2%) of the calves in 1997 and in three (0.6%) animals in 1998. Only 1% of the serum samples had pepsinogen values exceeding 3.6 U tyrosine, indicative of subclinical Ostertagia ostertagi infection. Lungworm infection was detected in five and nine herds in 1997 and 1998, respectively. The number of seropositive animals on these farms ranged between one (10%) and seven (70%). Clinical signs of dictyocaulosis were observed on two farms. The results indicate that dictyocaulosis is a problem in organic dairy herds in Sweden. On the other hand, the study shows that good management such as usage of parasite safe pastures and supplementary feeding may help control gastrointestinal parasites.  相似文献

The National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) (Round 2) for Tennessee collected baseline data on the preventive (as opposed to therapeutic) use of drugs from 60 beef cow-calf herds selected by a random, stratified, two-stage sampling plan. Counties were selected randomly with replacement for three herd-size strata, and herds were selected within countries by an area-frame method. Data were collected during monthly interviews for 1 year (1987–1988).

Tennessee beef cattle were medicated with 31 drugs to prevent diseases. The drugs most frequently used were anthelmintics and insecticides. The diseases against which preventive drugs were most frequently used were external parasites, intestinal parasites, ‘pink eye’ (keratoconjunctivitis), anaplasmosis, and respiratory infections. Ivermectin was the most frequently used anthelmintic and the most frequently used drug. Levamisole, fenbendazole, and thiabendazole were also frequently used anthelmintics. The most frequently used insecticides were the organophosphates (including fenthion, dichlorvos, and stirofos). Antimicrobials seldom were used, suggesting that prophylactic antimicrobial use in Tennessee beef cattle may not be a major public-health concern.  相似文献

Clinical trials on a central Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm (B) during 1960-1961 involved nine test treatments of mares, yearlings and weanlings (n = 124), and compared efficacies of phenothiazine (PTZ), piperazine (PPZ), mixtures of PTZ + PPZ and thiabendazole (TBZ) for (1) percent reduction and (2) complete clearance or graded reduction of strongyle egg per gram (epg) counts. Three grades of PTZ (N.F. green, micronized purified and 2-3 microns purified) at the dose rate of 55 mg kg-1 were ineffective in six tests; reduction of strongyle epg count were low grade (26%) and complete clearance was found in only 1 of 32 horses. Piperazine alone at 88 mg base kg-1 was efficacious in two tests; epg counts were effectively reduced (98%), but complete clearance was found in only 2 of 10 horses. Several mixtures of PTZ + PPZ with various dosages of PTZ (27.5-55 mg kg-1) plus PPZ base (88 mg kg-1) were quite effective in six tests, as epg counts were reduced by 96% and complete clearance occurred in 25 of 38 horses. Four trials with TBZ at dose rates between 13 and 44 mg kg-1 in 1961 reduced epg counts by 98%, but cleared only 15 of 36 horses. These data indicated: (1) a large segment of the Farm B small strongyle population was resistant to PTZ at the outset of these observations in 1960; (2) TBZ-resistant individuals were also present in this population when TBZ was first used in 1961. During the ensuing 4-year study (1962-1965) on Farm B mares (n = 15 per year) and yearlings (n = 15-17 per year), biweekly epg and larvae per gram (lpg) counts were carried out to compare the efficacy of three treatment programs: (1) monthly doses of TBZ at 26 mg kg-1; (2) monthly doses of TBZ at 13 mg kg-1; (3) bimonthly doses of a mixture of PTZ + PPZ and carbon disulfide (CS2) at dose rates of 27.5 + 88 and 78 mg kg-1, respectively, or a mixture of PTZ + PPZ + trichlorfon (TCF) at dose rates of 27.5 + 88 + 40 mg kg-1, respectively. Emergence of a TBZ-resistant segment of the small strongyle infections was evaluated by three criteria: (1) annual mean strongyle epg counts; (2) efficacy of individual treatments for epg reductions (%); (3) complete clearance or graded reductions of strongyle epg counts.4+ PTZ-resistant small strongyles.
