Widespread mortality of Cordilleran cypress (Austrocedrus chilensis) occurs in developed and pristine forests in south-western Argentina and possibly south-eastern Chile. Affected trees may die rapidly but mortality is commonly preceded by several decades of severely restricted radial stem growth. Roots are often affected by one or more types of decay. Cypress mortality, locally termed ‘mal del cipres’, is similar to a major forest disease in North America: Port-Orford-cedar (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana) root disease in Oregon and California and a major tree decline: Alaska yellow-cedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis) decline in south-east Alaska. This paper discusses several hypotheses concerning mal del cipres and compares current forest decline research in Patagonia with North America.  相似文献

Polylepis australis woodlands range from northern to central Argentina. They support a high number of endemisms (both plants and animals) and constitute the main cover type in watersheds contributing to retain soil and catch water. Natural regeneration of P. australis in the Córdoba mountains, Argentina, was studied in two communities dominated by P. australis: shrublands and woodlands. The main objectives of the study were: (1) to characterize shrublands and woodlands in terms of physical (physical and chemical soil properties) and biological (Polylepis’ growth form, fern and moss cover) characteristics; (2) to describe P. australis’ soil seed bank and compare seedling and sapling establishment between both communities. The presence of seedlings as well as saplings was quantified, and soil samples were taken so as to characterize the seed bank.

Results showed significant differences in habitat conditions between shrublands and woodlands. Seedlings’ density was higher in the shrublands, while no differences appeared regarding the sapling numbers. A negative correlation was found between seedling numbers and total community cover as well as mosses and ferns cover. Seed density in the soil bank was higher in the woodlands, but overall seed viability was less than 5%. In the shrublands, the most critical stage of the species regeneration cycle was the transition from seedling to sapling, while in the woodlands the main “filter” occurred during seed germination. The low number of saplings observed in both units suggests a stagnation of P. australis regeneration, which could be translated into an unlikely expansion of the species throughout the Córdoba mountains.  相似文献

The long-term relationships between coarse woody debris (CWD) dynamics, soil characteristics and site productivity have, so far, received little attention. The objectives of the study were to describe CWD dynamics along a post-fire chronosequence (43–86 years after fire) in jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) stands, assess the importance of buried CWD in terms of soil available water holding capacity (AWHC), and investigate relationships between CWD, AWHC, nutrient retention and site productivity.

Twelve jack pine stands on sandy, mesic sites of glaciolacustrine origin were surveyed. Buried wood volume within the forest floor varied between 1 and 57 m3 ha−1 (4–92% of total site CWD volume) and showed no relationship with time. Downed log mass accumulation followed a “U shaped” successional pattern with time since fire. Buried wood AWHC was negligible compared with that of the 0–20 cm mineral soil layer. The most productive sites were characterised by higher forest floor dry weight, effective CEC and water holding capacity in the mineral soil. Path analyses of relationships between organic matter content, CWD and forest floor CEC showed that CEC was conditioned by forest floor organic matter and buried wood content.  相似文献

Forest inventory records incorporating individual tree data are an important source of information about the extent and severity of past rates of forest decline, thus providing a temporal perspective for contemporary observations. We demonstrate the potential of this approach by using continuous forest inventory (CFI) data to reconstruct the extent, severity, pattern of development and site-factor associations for white ash decline in Massachusetts. White ash (Fraxinus americana L.) increased in basal area on Massachusetts CFI plots at about 1.5% per year from 1962 to 1979. Ash decline is, however, locally severe. Plot decline status was estimated, based on vigor rating, and growth and mortality rates of white ash. Plots with a mean change in basal area per year of −0.5% and/or with a mean vigor rating of 2.0 (on a scale of 0–4) were classified as ‘decline’. Using these criteria, 20% of the 82 CFI plots with 10% total basal area of white ash in 1962 were classified as ‘decline’ in both 1979 and 1991. These results suggest that statewide there has been no net loss of ash basal area since 1962. The total forest area affected by ash decline has not increased in the past decade.

Analyses of the CFI data indicate that decline was most prevalent on mesic sites, high on the landscape and/or on steep slopes. Such sites are potentially subject to large fluctuations in soil moisture availability during drought periods. Relationships identified between the prevalence of ash decline and site factors were further evaluated within a 2 ha intensived study site in the center of a 13 ha white ash stand affected by ash decline in 1990. Decline was heterogeneously distributed within the stand, with declining trees most frequent on the ‘decline-prone’ site-type identified through CFI plot analyses.  相似文献

Salix discolor Mühl. (Sd) and Salix viminalis L. (Sv) were planted under short-rotation intensive culture (SRIC) on three unirrigated abandoned farmland sites with different drainage conditions, one well-drained (S1) and the other two poorly-drained (S2, S3). One dose of dried and granulated sludge equivalent to 150 (T1) kg of “available” N ha−1 was applied to some plots in the spring of the second season while others were left unfertilized (T0). The aims of the experiment were (i) to investigate plant response (growth and productivity) to plantation site conditions and sludge application; (ii) study nutrient status by foliar analysis. Over three seasons, growth in height and aboveground biomass were greater for S. viminalis than for S. discolor on all sites. S. viminalis planted on poorly-drained site 2 had the highest biomass yield (45.28 t ha−1). Both species showed best height and diameter growth on poorly-drained sites. For both species, best performances were obtained on wastewater sludge fertilized plots. Comparative foliar analysis suggested that unfertilized sandy soil (S1) and low foliar nitrogen concentration and content were limiting factors in the performance of the two species. Soil nitrate concentration increased as a result of sludge application. Heavy metal accumulation from sludge does not represent a risk to the environment. It was concluded that S. viminalis had the best productivity on clay sites, and that a moderate dose of dried and pelleted sludge (150 kg of “available” N ha−1) may be a good fertilizer during the establishment of willows in SRIC, and may reduce nitrate leaching.  相似文献

The objective of our study was to examine whether distribution of regeneration in uneven-aged fir (Abies alba Mill.) forests is related to the spatial pattern of trees. In 12 sample plots of size 0.45–1.00 ha (in total 8.65 ha, with stand basal areas ranging from 27.6 m2 ha–1 to 39.5 m2 ha–1), all live and dead trees above 5 cm in d1.3 were mapped and their diameters measured. In eight plots, all live and dead fir saplings were mapped. In three plots, the number of live fir saplings and seedlings was registered on small systematically distributed circular plots. The values of an analytically developed index of stand influence were compared in patches occupied and unoccupied by live or dead fir regeneration. Contrary to preliminary assumptions, only in a few cases did saplings and trees 5–15 cm in d1.3 appear more often in gaps and looser stand patches. Rather, in many plots, the opposite tendency was observed. The seedling density showed a weak but positive correlation with the index of influence. If the spatial pattern of regeneration reflects the spatially varying mortality of juvenile trees, then no evidence was found that stand competition was the most important factor inducing this mortality. On the contrary, on the basis of the results obtained, we can presume that the survival rate of juvenile firs was higher in patches with a relatively higher local basal area. Thus, it was hypothesised that, first, dispersion of regeneration in uneven-aged fir forests is controlled by easy-to-change edaphic factors such as humus form and acidity of the upper soil horizons, and second, that these soil features are linked with the spatial pattern of trees.  相似文献

Despite the importance of edaphic factors in influencing woody vegetation diversity and structure in savannas, there is still limited research on the topic across most savanna ecosystems. Here we investigate the differences and/or similarities of woody vegetation diversity and structure across areas with different edaphic factors (i.e. soil group) in Gonarezhou National Park, Zimbabwe. We stratified our study area into two strata based on soil group, namely siallitic soil in northern Gonarezhou and regosol soil in central Gonarezhou. Data were collected from 96 sample plots between March and April in 2011. Our results showed significantly higher woody species diversity in siallitic soil stratum compared to regosol soil stratum. In contrast, there were no significant differences in woody vegetation structure between the two study strata. Our results suggest that soil variations play an important role in influencing woody vegetation diversity more than woody vegetation structure in Gonarezhou. Future studies should investigate the role of soils on a specific woodland type's composition and structure, and also determine the interactive effects between soils and other environmental determinants in Gonarezhou and similar protected areas in savanna ecosystems.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine how soil chemistry and the distribution of fine roots (<1 mm) in the organic and upper mineral soil horizons were affected by an admixture of birch (Betula pendula Roth and B. pubescens Ehrh.) in Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) stands. The surface organic horizons (LF and H) and mineral soil were characterized to a depth of 10 cm on three sites in southern and central Sweden. On these sites, replicated plots had been established that contained either ca. 30-year-old birch growing as a shelter over similar-aged spruce (mixed plots) or spruce only. The treatments had been created 8–11 years before this study was done. A fourth site, with plots containing ca. 90-year-old spruce or birch/spruce, and a fifth site, with 30-year-old spruce and a low admixture (12% by basal area) of birch, were also included in the study. Concentrations of Ca and Mg and pH in the LF layer were significantly higher in plots with a birch admixture. In the H-horizon, concentrations of K, Ca and Mg were significantly higher in mixed plots than in plots with pure spruce. Consequently, base saturation was higher in mixed plots than in pure spruce plots. A shelter of birch decreased the total amount of spruce fine roots (<1 mm), as revealed at one of the sites. Total fine root biomass (birch + spruce) in the organic and mineral soil horizons (to 10 cm) did not differ significantly between the pure spruce stands and the spruce stands with a birch shelter.  相似文献

Factors related to the composition of riparian forest stands on three streams in the northern Sierra Nevada mixed conifer forest type were related to proximity to the water course and years since fire. Using a linear regression analysis 46 variables were correlated to the natural log of distance from the thalweg “ln(distance)” including a highly significant positive correlation to dominance and percent canopy cover of conifers, and a significant negative correlation to the same variables when applied to hardwoods. Twenty six variables were correlated to years since fire “years” including similar correlations to the dominance and cover of hardwood and conifer species. However, the significance of the correlation and the degree of sample variability described by fire age was relatively low in comparison to that found for distance from the thalweg. In addition the relative frequency of fire scars increased in a linear fashion with distance from the watercourse. The results of this study indicate that the importance of fire as a determining influence on forest composition declines in proximity to the riparian zone.  相似文献

The long-term nature of forest crop rotations makes it difficult to determine impacts of forestry on soil nutrients that might be depleted by forest growth. We used small scale, highly stocked plots to compress the length of the rotation and rapidly induce nutrient depletion. In the study, two species (Pinus radiata D. Don and Cupressus lusitanica Miller) are compared under two disturbance regimes (soil undisturbed and compacted), and two fertiliser treatments (nil and plus fertiliser), applied in factorial combination at 33 sites, covering the range of climatic and edaphic variation found in plantation forests across New Zealand. To assess our ability to rapidly highlight important soil properties, foliar nutrient concentrations were determined 20 months after planting. It was hypothesised that the densely planted plots, even at a young age, would create sufficient pressure on nutrient resources to allow development of relationships between properties used as indicies of soil nutrient availability and foliar nutrient concentrations. For both species significant relationships between foliar nutrients and 0–10 cm layer soil properties from unfertilised plots were evident for N (total and mineralisable N) and P (total, acid extractable, organic, Bray-2 and Olsen P). With the exception of Ca in C. lusitanica, foliar K, Ca and Mg were correlated with their respective soil exchangeable cation measures. The results thus confirm the utility of the experimental approach and the relevance of the measured soil properties for forest productivity.

In unfertilised plots foliar N and P concentrations in P. radiata exceeded those in C. lusitanica, the differences being eliminated by fertiliser application. Foliar N/P ratios in P. radiata also exceeded those in C. lusitanica. In contrast to N and P, foliar K, Ca and Mg concentrations were all higher in C. lusitanica, the difference being particularly marked for Ca and Mg. P. radiata contained substantially higher concentrations of the metals Zn, Mn and Al than C. lusitanica, whereas the latter contained higher B concentrations. Possible reasons for differences between species in foliar nutrient concentrations are discussed.  相似文献

Nitrogen fertilization in the nursery, along with altering the configuration of forest gaps, may improve the reforestation success of longleaf pine seedlings. During the very droughty 1998 growing season in Florida and Georgia, survival was higher under the forest canopy than in small (0.10 ha, 36 m diameter) and large (1.6 ha, 144 m diameter) canopy gaps. In the large gaps, survival of containerized seedlings was higher along the edges, particularly the SW edge. Shade from adult trees and the nurse effect of shrubs increased survival, while grass competition reduced survival. During dry years part of the “exclusionary zone” along the edge of canopy gaps (SW sector) may serve as a “survival zone”, at least in the short term. A model using oval-shaped gaps oriented from NW to SE, with an area of 0.25 ha is proposed to maximize the survival and growth of artificially regenerated longleaf pine seedlings.  相似文献

The forests of Austrocedrus chilensis (D. Don) Pic. Sern. et Bizarri in Argentina suffer decline and mortality throughout their natural distribution known as ‘mal del ciprés’. While several aspects of this, to date, temporally unpredictable process of overstory tree mortality have been the focus of detailed studies, there has been little research on tree growth and stand dynamics in symptomatic forests nor stand development patterns and prediction of future stand structure. We studied 12 stands in northern Patagonia (Province of Río Negro) using stand reconstruction studies to examine the changes in stand structure over time as a consequence of overstory mortality and the implications of these structural changes on the establishment and growth of the residual overstory. Dendrochronological analyses were used to reconstruct stand establishment and structure over time, and to study past diameter growth patterns. Mortality in A. chilensis forests was variable in time among stands. As expected, overstory mortality led to the successful establishment of trees in the understory in all stands; however, the response of residual overstory trees was variable. Understory establishment was low in some stands and high in others depending on the density of the overstory. While overstory trees in almost all stands released after the onset of the mortality, the pattern was not distinctive, varying in time, number and magnitude. In some stands, growth releases occurred after single or multiple tree deaths suggesting a relationship between processes, while in others this was not the case. Even when the patterns of recruitment in the understory and the overstory response varied greatly among stands, when examined together, some general patterns emerged. This study is the first to intensively explore the dynamics of A. chilensis forests affected by ‘mal del ciprés’. Additionally, this study showed that arbitrarily categorizing disturbances as discrete or chronic masks the true process of release of growing space and the resulting stand dynamics.  相似文献

From a sample of 665 hollows found in 154 jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) and 85 marri (Corymbia calophylla), we identified 204 hollows in 84 trees that were potentially suited to one or more of 10 species of hollow using birds and mammals. Occurrence of these hollows increased with tree age, tree size, and species (marri bore more usable hollows than jarrah) and increased amounts of dead wood in tree crowns. Hollow occurrence was most likely in trees with moderately senescent crowns with damage to intermediate sized branches, and the largest hollows were more likely to occur in more highly senescent crowns. Evidence of termite invasion at the tree butt was not related to occurrence of hollows. For all but one of the birds and mammals we considered, dead trees were no more likely than live trees to contain hollows.

Our study indicates that for the purpose of forest management planning, 130 years can be taken as the typical minimum age for the formation of usable hollows in jarrah and marri. The current minimum prescribed diameter for “habitat trees” (trees retained in logged areas to supplement existing hollows), which corresponds to a mean age of 171 years, is thus a realistic minimum size for these retained trees. We recommend raising the prescribed range of crown senescence for retained habitat trees to increase the probability of providing large hollows suited to large species such as red-tailed black cockatoo, and common brushtail possum, and maternal hollows used by smaller species. Retaining the largest trees with appropriate crown attributes will substantially increase the probability that these trees will bear usable hollows.  相似文献

Abstract

Oriental spruce [Picea orientalis (L.) Link] is a species native to Turkey, covering about 350,000 ha. The species is of great importance to the production of timber as well as to the creation of social welfare in eastern Black Sea region. There are few studies about ecological variables affecting oriental spruce site productivity. Based on data from 90 sample plots, multiple regression models were developed using topographic, edaphic, soil nutrients, climatic subgroups and all factors integrated. Within the different subgroups of site factors, the integrated model with all ecological variables provided the best statistical results, which explained 77% of index variation. Other topographic, edaphic, soil nutrients and climatic subgroup models were enumerated by the success of modelling site index of oriental spruce from the related site variables. The results show that the integrated model is more successful than the models developed separately for each ecological variable. However, the integrated model included 12 different variables and thus the assessment of some of these model variables, e.g. element content of the soil (Ca2+, Mg2+, etc.), require potentially laborious soil analyses and costly applications. Therefore, the topographic model with only three variables (R 2=0.656), which can be assessed directly from digital maps by Geographical Information System (GIS), seems to be more promising and convenient, since the model can be easily applied to large areas. The results can be translated into practical recommendations to forest managers for selecting suitable site conditions for oriental spruce.  相似文献

Chestnut ink disease caused by the oomycete Phytophthora cinnamomi, a soil‐borne pathogen of world‐wide distribution, accounts for the majority of disease problems on chestnuts in Portugal, limiting yield in a large number of stands and impeding establishment of trees in new areas. A survey was carried out in 32 chestnut stands in the Padrela Mountains of northern Portugal to investigate the relationship among ink disease occurrence, edaphic factors and management practices. A logistic regression function was employed to analyze the effect of soil attributes and management practices on the stand health status. Results showed that the main factors affecting disease were soil compaction (COMP), soil organic matter level (OM) and manuring practice (MA). A logistic model containing the soil variable COMP and the interaction term OM × MA correctly predicted the stand health status in 94%, or 30, of the 32 stands studied. The logistic function coefficients indicate that the probability of a stand having ink disease increases with increasing soil compaction and increasing soil organic matter content in stands where manuring is the usual practice.  相似文献

We investigated how multiple-crop forestry has influenced the magnitude and variability of soil and plant phosphorus (P) fertility and site disturbance. Kinleith Forest, on Mamaku Plateau, covers >100,000 ha and comprises mainly plantation Pinus radiata. Three study areas in the forest were chosen to represent natural state (native forest), first crop of P. radiata (24 years growth), and second crop of P. radiata (4 years growth of second crop). The adjacent areas have similar relief and climate, and the soils are all the same age, being predominantly Andic Haplohumods developed in 1770 calendar-year-old non-welded tephra (Taupo Ignimbrite, ca. 0.5–0.8 m in thickness) and overlying a buried paleosol on earlier tephric material.

Soil properties were compared using a random geometric sampling scheme stratified in a 40-m grid. Soil samples (0–20 cm) were taken at 1.5, 4.5 and 13 m spatial intervals in random directions away from each primary node, providing 192 sample sites for each study area. Additionally at selected sites, samples of the current year's foliage from the upper crowns were collected, the thickness of Taupo Ignimbrite (i.e. depth to buried paleosol) was recorded by augering, and site disturbance was assessed using a new six-point scale based on change relative to a modal soil profile. Geostatistics and geographical information systems (GIS) were used to assess variability and effects of forest management on the measured properties. Soil Bray-2 P concentrations were below guidelines for satisfactory growth (12 mg kg−1) at all sites, and no differences were recorded between the different management areas. However, the amount of within-site variability in Bray-2 P increased with the number of crops. Foliar P concentrations were only marginally deficient in both the first and second crops, indicating that P is currently not significantly limiting growth. The lack of difference in foliar P between first and second crops indicates no crop-to-crop decline in foliar P status and suggests that no site P fertility decline has occurred. The soils have an unusual ability to continue releasing P through successive sequential extractions in the Bray-2 P test, indicating a strong buffering capacity, and this may explain the apparent lack of deficiency even with Bray-2 P values of <12 mg kg−1. The site disturbance index increased and the spatial distribution of P data became increasingly variable with crop rotation.

GIS, inverse-distance weighting and kriging proved useful in illustrating the trends between crops. The spatial variability of results indicated that there was no obvious pattern to the variability and that more site-specific forest management in the region would be difficult. However, there was some evidence that less disturbance during harvesting may minimise variability of soil P supply.  相似文献

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi plant associations have long been suggested to be a suitable location for afforestations, but systematic studies on the observed beneficial effect are still missing in Alpine areas. In this study we address the question which ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal communities exist in Austrian alpine and subalpine Arctostaphylos habitats, and if they persist in A. uva-ursi stands even hundred of years after disappearance of trees in these areas. The diversity of fungal communities associated with A. uva-ursi was assessed in four study sites (1800–2450 m a.s.l.) in the Central European Alps of Tyrol (Austria). Three approaches were applied: (i) collecting and identifying fungal fruit bodies; (ii) studying the arbutoid mycorrhiza morphotypes of A. uva-ursi; (iii) molecular identification of the most common arbutoid morphotypes. The detected diversity of ECM fungal species was very high (99 taxa), and the occurrence of e.g. Boletus, Cantharellus, Suillus, Tricholoma, Russula spp. in sites that have been treeless for centuries is especially remarkable. Fruit bodies of 82 fungal species were found in association with A. uva-ursi, 63 of them were ECM. Seventy arbutoid morphotypes were detected on 2072 mycorrhized root tips, and 39 taxa of basidiomycete mycobionts were identified with molecular methods. Twelve Cortinarius spp. clearly dominated the mycobiont species richness, followed by nine spp. of Thelephoraceae and four spp. of Boletaceae. Most mycobionts of A. uva-ursi were generalists, but fungal taxa (e.g. Lactarius deterrimus and Suillus spp.) known to be specifically associated with other host plants were also detected. We therefore consider A. uva-ursi as a “non-selective” host, providing mycorrhizal inoculum of highly specialized and effective mycorrhizal fungi for afforestation. This explains why A. uva-ursi plant associations represent suitable locations for forest regeneration and afforestation, especially in the harsh environmental conditions of subalpine and alpine sites.  相似文献
