Chrysoporthe austroafricana is one of the most damaging pathogens of Eucalyptus trees in southern Africa. It also occurs on non‐native Tibouchina granulosa trees and native Syzygium species. Additional isolates of the pathogen from previously unstudied countries in the region have become available from survey studies. The aim of this study was to use VCGs to consider the diversity in populations of isolates collected in various countries in southern Africa (Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia) and from different hosts. We also wanted to determine whether there are shared VCGs among these countries and hosts in southern Africa and establish a VCG tester strain database. Results showed a high diversity amongst isolates from different countries and hosts, but suggested little movement of VCGs among countries or hosts based on the available isolates. A total of 108 VCG tester strains were identified for southern Africa.  相似文献

Domestication of Uapaca kirkiana Müell. Arg is a high priority for improving rural livelihoods of smallholder farmers in southern Africa. Domestication efforts require knowledge of adaptive traits and intra-specific variation. Morphological traits and amplified fragment length polymorphic (AFLP) markers were used to assess genetic variation in twelve provenances of U. kirkiana collected from southern Africa. Assessment of morphological traits showed significant differences (P < 0.05) between provenances. Provenances from Zimbabwe and Zambia showed faster growth than those from Malawi (except Phalombe) and Tanzania. Morphological traits exhibited strong genetic differentiation between provenances and within provenances. The degree of provenance differentiation of traits (Q ST = 0.03–0.139, Q ST mean = 0.092) was in the same range with that of AFLP loci (F ST mean = 0.089) detected among provenances and within provenances (0.002 < F ST < 0.259). The differentiation for some morphological traits could be attributed to local adaptation and human selection of the U. kirkiana trees at the site of origin. Mean Nei’s (H) genetic diversity of AFLP showed high diversity within the provenances (H = 0.181–0.321, H mean = 0.256). An analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed higher genetic variation (90.8%) within provenances than among provenances (9.2%). There was no geographical pattern of variation in growth and morphological traits among the seed sources. Chipata provenance from Zambia was the most diverse while Mapanzure from Zimbabwe was the least diverse, though it was superior in height and earliest in fruiting. The pattern of genetic diversity indicates low selection in some areas and high gene flow which would be counteracting it. Therefore regional and country collections and conservation strategies should consider differences by focussing on the main range of the species by paying particular attention to unique populations within countries.  相似文献

Baobab (Adansonia digitata L) belonging to Bombacaceae family, is one of the most widely used indigenous priority tree species in sub-Saharan Africa, valued in the cosmetic industry for its seed oil, and powdery fruit pulp for juice making. Baobab has high potential for domestication in southern Africa, therefore understanding its genetic diversity and population structuring is warranted. The study investigated the level of genetic diversity and differentiation of five populations of A. digitata L. sampled from four diverse silvicultural zones in Malawi. Variation at nine microsatellite loci were examined in 150 individual trees. Low mean genetic diversity was expressed through genetic diversity indices: Nei’s genetic diversity (h, 0.18 ± 0.03), Shannon Information Index (I, 0.21 ± 0.07), observed number of alleles (na, 1.47 ± 0.10), effective number of alleles (ne, 1.23 ± 0.04) and percentage polymorphic loci (pp, 48 %). The low genetic variation found is attributed to the population growing in marginal areas of genetic centre of diversity of the species, anthropogenic factors and founder effects. Moderate genetic differentiation was observed among populations (Gst = 0.13) indicating the presence of a large number of common alleles resulting in a homogenisation effect. Clustering of individual trees by genetic similarity coefficients indicated that mainland trees were genetically closer than the trees on Likoma Island. Mantel’s test showed a weak positive insignificant correlation (Z = 0.12; P = 0.64) between genetic distance among populations and actual distance on the ground implying that geneflow was not directly influenced by isolation by distance. The results suggest that seed distribution and tree improvement should recognise the presence of ecotypes and conservation measures should protect all the populations due to existence of private alleles which are of adaptive importance.  相似文献

Four common agroforestry trees, including both exotic and native species, were used to provide a range of leafing phenologies to test the hypothesis that temporal complementarity between trees and crops reduces competition for water in agroforestry systems during the cropping period and improves utilisation of annual rainfall. Species examined included Melia volkensii, which sheds its leaves twice a year, Senna spectabilis and Gliricidia sepium, which shed their leaves once during the long dry season, and the evergreen Croton megalocarpus. Phenological patterns were examined in relation to climatic conditions in the bimodal rainfall regions of Kenya to identify factors which dictate the intensity of competition between trees and crops.

The main differences in leaf cover patterns were between indigenous and exotic tree species. The Central American species, S. spectabilis and G. sepium, shed their foliage during the dry season before the short rains, whereas the native species, M. volkensii and C. megalocarpus, exhibited reduced leaf cover during both dry seasons. C. megalocarpus was the only species to maintain leaf cover throughout the 2-year experimental period. M. volkensii and S. spectabilis exhibited similar leafing phenology, losing almost all leaf cover during the long dry season (July–October) and flushing before the onset of the ensuing rains. S. spectabilis lost few leaves during the short dry season, whereas M. volkensii shed a greater proportion of its foliage before flushing prior to the long rains (March–July). M. volkensii lost much of its leaf cover during the 1997/1998 short rains (October–February), when soil water content was unusually high. Although essentially evergreen, leaf cover in C. megalocarpus decreased during the dry season and increased rapidly during periods of high rainfall. G. sepium exhibited a period of low leaf cover during the long dry season and did not regain full leaf cover until mid-way through the short rains. The mechanisms responsible for these phenological changes and the implications of tree phenology for resource utilisation and competition with crops are discussed.  相似文献

Faidherbia albida is a well-known and widespread agroforestry species of the Sudano-Sahelian zone of West Africa. Recent collection and testing efforts have included attempts to introduce seed origins from eastern and southern Africa into the Sahel. These have generally met with failure. Despite superior early growth, mortality is severe by the first or second year. Trials conducted at the ICRISAT Sahelian Center in Niger have demonstrated that this is probably due to differences in rooting patterns between southern and western Africa origins. A separation of the species into two ecotypes, i.e., upland (western Africa) and riparian (eastern, southern and southwestern Africa) is proposed. Based on this argument, the Sudan/Ethiopia region is identified as a possible center of origin for the species. Submitted as ICRISAT Journal Article # JA-1107.  相似文献

The genetic variation of six Tunisian Myrtus communis L. (Myrtaceae) populations was assessed using nine isozymes coding for 17 putative loci and 79 RAPD markers, amplified by five decamer random primers. The analysed populations belonged to three bioclimatic zones (lower humid, sub-humid and upper semi-arid). A high genetic diversity within populations was detected both by isozymes and RAPDs. The level of variation differed according to bioclimate. Populations collected from sub-humid bioclimate showed more polymorphism than those grown in the upper semi-arid zone. For all populations, the genetic diversity revealed by RAPDs was more pronounced than that detected with isozymes. A high differentiation among populations related to bioclimate and geographic distance was revealed by both methods. Population’s structure based on RAPD markers was more concordant with bioclimatic zones in comparison with isozymes. Differentiation between ecological groups was higher than that revealed within groups. Conservation programs should take into account the level of genetic diversity within population revealed by the two complementary classes of markers according to bioclimate.  相似文献

从210个随机引物中筛选出的16个引物,共检测到118条带,其中多态性带95个,总多态位点比率为80.37%,充分说明了马尾松无性系间遗传背景的复杂性和多样性。采用Nei指数计算的建园无性系马尾松有效等位基因数平均值为1.3447,总基因多样性为0.2445,遗传多样度(h)平均值为0.2445,Shannon′s信息指数(I)平均值为0.3558,与一些松柏纲植物的RAPD数据资料相比,马尾松的遗传多样性处于较高水平,显示出该无性系马尾松种子园内各马尾松的遗传基础较宽,具备营建出遗传品质好、遗传多样性高、稳定性好的马尾松人工造林的能力,能满足林木育种的需要。  相似文献

以引自江苏扬州大禹观赏竹园的2年生鹅毛竹(Shibataea chinensis)、黄条金刚竹(Sasaella masamuneana f. aureostriata)、菲白竹(Pleioblastus fortunei)、菲黄竹(Pleioblastus viridistriatus)、铺地竹(Pleioblastus argenteostriatus)等5种地被竹为研究材料,研究了干旱和低温胁迫处理对地被竹超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)、过氧化物酶(POD)、可溶性蛋白质等生理指标的影响,并对地被竹的耐旱、耐寒性进行综合评价。结果表明,5种引种地被竹的耐旱性从大到小的排序为鹅毛竹>黄条金刚竹>铺地竹>菲白竹>菲黄竹,耐寒性从大到小的排序为鹅毛竹﹥黄条金刚竹﹥菲黄竹﹥菲白竹﹥铺地竹。  相似文献

Vitellaria paradoxa C.F.Gaertn. is one of the most economically and socially important tree species in the Sudano-Sahelian region. Little is known of the pattern of variation within its natural range. Eight populations covering most of the natural range from Senegal to Uganda were sampled and leaves of 118 individual trees were collected. An analysis of molecular diversity was carried out using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Fifteen random primers generated 67 polymorphic and 15 monomorphic RAPD loci ranging from size 1670 bp to 280 bp. Shannon's diversity index varied from Central Africa/Ndele (0.374) to Uganda/Amoya (0.350) but the differences between populations were smaller than the population standard errors. Correspondence analysis of unrooted neighbour-joining trees suggested that genetic distances between populations were correlated with geographic distances. This trend was confirmed by a Mantel test giving a coefficient of correlation between genetic and geographic distances of R = 0.88 (P = 0.0001). Result of AMOVA (analyses of molecular variance) showed that 14.8% (P = 0.002) of the RAPD variation was distributed among populations. Nested analysis of variance indicated that variance between the western and eastern groups of population represented 8.7% (P = 0.001) of the total variation and the variation amongst populations within group was 9.5% (P = 0.001). Eighty two percent of the variation was explained by variation amongst individuals within populations. The origin of genetic structure and level of diversity may be explained by the glacial refugia, the biological traits of Vitellaria paradoxa and by the impact of semi-domestication. Based on these results, sampling options of the natural populations are suggested for in or ex situ conservation. For the development of Vitellaria paradoxa breeding population, the sampling should consist of many individual trees selected within a few populations to capture a large proportion of variation.This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

运用随机扩增多态性DNA(RAPD)标记技术,采用Operon公司的10种随机引物,以采自美国东南部、北部、西部和我国江苏、浙江、湖北、湖南、云南等地的9个美国山核桃栽培群体45个单株的种子为材料,检测出多态位点42个。以这些多态位点为依据,计算了估测了多态性位点百分比、Shannon表型多样度指数、Virk群体内遗传距离和Nei氏群体间遗传距离,并用它们作为参数进行群体遗传多样性的RAPD分析。结果表明,参试的美国山核桃品种群体遗传变异明显,且群体间差异大于群体内差异,我国引种的群体遗传差异大于原产地美国的群体遗传差异。  相似文献

The International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) system and has recently established a Multipurpose Tree Germplasm Resource Unit (MPT-GRU) in Nairobi, Kenya. The first major activity of the MPT-GRU was to undertake a regional germplasm collection ofSesbania in 5 countries in southern Africa in a collaborative mode with National Agricultural Research Services (NARS). The collections took place in Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.Key elements of a generalised collaborative mode (the model) are indicated follwed by a summary of actual events. The initial phase involved joint planning and training sessions between NARS, three sister CGIAR centres and one regional institution, the Southern Africa Development Conference (SADC) Regional Gene Bank (SRGB). This was followed by actual collections during 1993 led by National scientists with different levels of CGIAR participation in each of the five countries. The International Board of Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR) took the lead in pre-collection training activities, ICRAF for developing the collection programme and the International Livestock Centre for Africa (ILCA) for seed drying, testing and despatch for field trials. NARS gene banks guided the necessary administrative processes. The ICRAF lead scientist for the species and provenance evaluation phase was a crucial member of the planning process thus allowing integration of the collection with the eventual field evaluation. The article focuses on the collection strategy, administrative protocols for actual collections and summary results. Some advantages and difficulties associated with the collection programme and model are discussed. The collections were important in bringing together agriculturalists and foresters in a common germplasm collection exercise.  相似文献

Although most Sinojackia species are endangered, they contribute greatly to the biodiversity of local ecosystems. Sinojackia microcarpa, an endangered species, is distributed only in three provinces of eastern China. Determining the genetic diversity of S. microcarpa provides key information for germplasm evaluation and species conservation. Here we used simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers to investigate the genetic diversity of eight natural populations of S. microcarpa. Leaf samples were collected from 144 individuals in 8 wild populations. The 156 bands were generated from 14 pairs of informative SSR primers, with an average percentage of polymorphic bands of 45.67%. The average values of Nei’s genetic diversity (He) and Shannon’s diversity index (I) were 0.1007 and 0.1658, respectively. The total genetic variation of S. microcarpa existed mainly within the eight populations, rather than among populations, and reached 86.41%. A cluster analysis showed that the eight wild populations of S. microcarpa could be classified into four groups, at a threshold of 4.0, based on an analysis of the SSR genotypes. Furthermore, there was a significant association between the phylogenetic relationships and the geographic locations of the S. microcarpa populations. In particular, populations from Fuyang, Jiande, and Lin’an in Zhejiang Province had close phylogenetic relationships and geographic distances. In addition, these three populations had the highest genetic diversity and the most individuals, suggesting that these three locations may be the S.microcarpa distribution center. This study serves as a model for studying the genetic diversity of endangered plant species.  相似文献

Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis [L.] Carr.) is a widespread and ecologically important conifer species of eastern North America that is threatened by the hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae Annand), a pest introduced into the United States from Asia in the 1920s. Information about the genetic composition of eastern hemlock is necessary to guide ex situ conservation efforts in the southeastern United States, where the species is expected to harbor relatively high amounts of genetic variation in areas of Pleistocene glacial refuge. Nineteen allozyme markers were used to quantify the genetic variation present in 20 eastern hemlock populations in the southeastern United States. Results indicate that the species has low levels of genetic diversity in the region compared to most other conifers, but greater population differentiation (F ST = 0.126). Populations along the eastern periphery and in the Appalachian interior exhibited higher levels of diversity than those along the western periphery of its geographic range. The results suggest that the glacial refuge area for eastern hemlock was likely located east of the southern Appalachian Mountains, and indicate that ex situ conservation seed collections should be concentrated in these areas of higher diversity.  相似文献

Salix discolor Mühl. (Sd) and Salix viminalis L. (Sv) were planted under short-rotation intensive culture (SRIC) on three unirrigated abandoned farmland sites with different drainage conditions, one well-drained (S1) and the other two poorly-drained (S2, S3). One dose of dried and granulated sludge equivalent to 150 (T1) kg of “available” N ha−1 was applied to some plots in the spring of the second season while others were left unfertilized (T0). The aims of the experiment were (i) to investigate plant response (growth and productivity) to plantation site conditions and sludge application; (ii) study nutrient status by foliar analysis. Over three seasons, growth in height and aboveground biomass were greater for S. viminalis than for S. discolor on all sites. S. viminalis planted on poorly-drained site 2 had the highest biomass yield (45.28 t ha−1). Both species showed best height and diameter growth on poorly-drained sites. For both species, best performances were obtained on wastewater sludge fertilized plots. Comparative foliar analysis suggested that unfertilized sandy soil (S1) and low foliar nitrogen concentration and content were limiting factors in the performance of the two species. Soil nitrate concentration increased as a result of sludge application. Heavy metal accumulation from sludge does not represent a risk to the environment. It was concluded that S. viminalis had the best productivity on clay sites, and that a moderate dose of dried and pelleted sludge (150 kg of “available” N ha−1) may be a good fertilizer during the establishment of willows in SRIC, and may reduce nitrate leaching.  相似文献

利用RAPD标记对马褂木全分布区 15个种群的遗传多样性进行了分析。研究发现 ,马褂木具有丰富的遗传多样性 ,但东部种群因现有种群小 ,其遗传多样性明显地低于西部种群。种群遗传学研究揭示 ,由于小种群效应 ,以及缺乏有效的基因流和特有的致濒机制 ,马褂木种群间的遗传分化巨大 ,30 %以上的遗传变异存在于种群间。但在不同的地理区域 ,种群间的遗传分化程度不同。在西部分布区 ,地域上相距不远的种群其遗传距离较小 ,而在东部即使两个相邻的种群 ,其遗传距离也非常大。使用Nei’s遗传距离进行算术平均数的非加权成组配对法分析 (UPGMA) ,其聚类结果可以很好地将马褂木划分为西部和东部两个种源区 ,而西部种源又可再划分为西南亚区和华中亚区  相似文献

Pterocarpus angolensis is being cut for construction and medicinal purposes through much of southern Africa. To assess the sustainability of this offtake, we estimated current harvest practice, population size structure, growth rates and seed production in protected and unprotected areas of Rukwa Region, western Tanzania. Results showed that adult P. angolensis are being removed very rapidly given its slow growth rate as determined from tree ring data, and that regeneration both inside and outside the protected area is very low. A simple model indicates that current harvest is unsustainable raising serious concerns about the long-term viability of this important hardwood species in miombo woodland.  相似文献

The Salicaceae and Betulaceae are important plant families within riparian ecosystems throughout the Northern hemisphere, and cuttings of species within these families are often used in riparian restoration projects due to their capacity for vegetative (asexual) propagation and rapid growth. Riparian zones can experience a wide range of hydrological conditions and establishing cuttings may be subjected to substantially varying levels of hydric stress from inundation and drought. Tolerance to such stress can vary notably between species, and the absence of knowledge of species-specific responses to inundation and drought has resulted in high mortality in many riparian restoration projects. In this paper, the survival and growth responses of Salix elaeagnos (Salicaceae), Populus nigra (Salicaceae) and Alnus incana (Betulaceae) cuttings in relation to varying rates of water table decline and periods of inundation were investigated using rhizopods during a 69-day greenhouse experiment, in substrates of contrasting sediments (sand versus gravel).

Each species responded differently to the experimental treatments. S. elaeagnos demonstrated an ability to establish in stable, declining and inundated conditions by the production of relatively substantial root and shoot biomass in all treatments, along with elongated roots when experiencing water table decline. P. nigra showed high mortality and poor root and shoot production in inundation treatments, suggesting that this species is intolerant to reduced oxygen conditions. A. incana displayed complete mortality in all gravel-based treatments and high mortality or poor growth in the sand-based inundation treatments. All species showed preferences for stable conditions without inundation, along with slow water table decline for S. elaeagnos. Fast rates of water table decline were detrimental to all species. Overall, sand was a much more effective substrate than gravel for supporting cutting establishment. These results suggest that riparian restoration schemes utilizing S. elaeagnos cuttings may experience greater success than those using the other species investigated. P. nigra cuttings may establish more easily if situated where inundation does not occur often or for prolonged periods, and A. incana cuttings should be planted only where very stable conditions dominate. The study highlights the inter-species variability in the survival and growth response of riparian trees to differing hydrological conditions.  相似文献

The experiment was conducted to ascertain narrow-sense heritability (h 2) and the family-within-provenance variation in shoot die-back, taproot length and root biomass of half-sib Pterocarpus angolensis families from Malawi, Namibia and Zambia. Provenances differed significantly in shoot die-back for both shoot die-back seasons. A within provenance family effect was not significant in the first shoot die-back season but was significant in the second shoot die-back season. An increase in proportion of seedlings dying back, to 91%, for a Malawi family was observed in the second shoot die-back season. Provenance and within provenance family effects may be due to latitudinal differences between the provenances. The h 2 of shoot die-back was 0.07 (SE = 0.07) in the first shoot die-back season and 0.42 (SE = 0.27) in the second shoot die-back season. Narrow-sense heritability for root biomass was 0.81 (SE = 0.45). The h 2 for the second die-back season and root biomass suggest the traits are heritable. Random selection of individual families for assessing shoot die-back is important since this trait is only restricted to seedlings and saplings and not mature trees. Within provenance family effects for root biomass were significant, indicating differences between families. Two families from the most northerly provenances of Phalombe and Skull Rock in Malawi were significantly different from other southern families. Non-significant phenotypic correlation between shoot die-back and root biomass shows that shoot die-back is not likely to be determined by root size nor taproot depth. Although a non-significant negative phenotypic correlation (–0.15) between the second shoot die-back season and root biomass was obtained, a family from Malawi that had the highest mean shoot die-back in the second shoot die-back season had the smallest root biomass. Half-sib families with post shoot die-back growth potential, in the first shoot die-back season, are likely to have a better chance of post shoot die-back growth later.  相似文献

对山东东平县第二苗圃4种3年生地被竹生长进行了调查,并探讨和比较了其扩展能力差异。结果表明:4种观赏地被竹高生长排序为菲白竹 > 黄条金刚竹 > 铺地竹 > 鹅毛竹,地径生长的排序为鹅毛竹 > 铺地竹 > 菲白竹 > 黄条金刚竹,菲白竹与黄条金刚竹的高径比较大,鹅毛竹与铺地竹的高径比相对较小;单位面积株数的排序是菲白竹 > 铺地竹 > 鹅毛竹 > 黄条金刚竹,菲白竹和铺地竹生长较为密集,鹅毛竹和黄条金刚竹相对稀疏;4种地被观赏竹扩展距离从大到小的排序为鹅毛竹 > 黄条金刚竹 > 铺地竹 > 菲白竹;不同竹种之间相遇时竞争能力不同,其排序为鹅毛竹 > 菲白竹 > 黄条金刚竹 > 铺地竹。  相似文献

The study of seed dispersal has received considerable attention in tropical ecology with emphasis placed on its role in the maintenance of species diversity. Since seeds of numerous high-value tropical timber trees are nominally or actively wind dispersed, the subject is also of interest to tropical foresters. In central Africa, up to 70% of harvested timber trees are wind dispersed, including African mahoganies of the genus Entandrophragma. The dual goals of managing many remote areas in central Africa for both biodiversity and timber production values has led to the consideration of low impact logging techniques. In the Central African Republic, increasing light downwind of Entandrophragma has been proposed as a way of increasing regeneration and recruitment of these trees. Mean wind direction at the time of dehiscence of Entandrophragma angolense and Entandrophragma cylindricum was compared with compass orientation of seed shadows for five individuals in mature, undisturbed forest. Mean wind direction was found to be toward the northeast for morning, afternoon, and daily winds and was significantly different from the orientation of seed shadows for all trees. Mean branch direction did not vary significantly from a random pattern, but matched the direction of the seed shadow better than wind direction did. It is concluded that harvesting interventions aimed at increasing light downwind of Entandrophragma will not necessarily benefit seedlings of the species at the study site and further silvicultural research is needed to determine appropriate management interventions, particularly in remote areas of Africa where conservation values are important.  相似文献
