AIMS: The bacterial genus Helicobacter contains over 20 species, including the human gastric pathogen H. pylori, and the mustelid-specific H. mustelae. A previous study in this country failed to isolate H. mustelae from a captive breeding colony of ferrets. We sought to confirm whether or not H. mustelae was present in this country. METHODS: A combination of bacterial culture, phenotypic testing and molecular techniques were used to isolate and identify gastric bacteria from captive and wild populations of ferrets in the New Zealand North Island. RESULTS: Bacteria were isolated from captive and wild ferrets which were phylogenetically identical to the type strain of H. mustelae. A mild to moderate gastritis was seen in five of six animals examined, and an antibody response to H. mustelae proteins was demonstrated. CONCLUSIONS: Helicobacter mustelae is not exotic to New Zealand, but is present in two populations of ferrets tested in the North Island.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate efficacy of 3 short-term treatments in cats naturally infected with Helicobacter heilmannii. ANIMALS: 29 cats infected with H heilmannii that had positive results for a urea breath test, rapid urease test, and Helicobacter species-specific polymerase chain reaction test. PROCEDURES: Cats anesthetized for routine surgical procedures were randomly allocated to 4 groups: group 1, control cats; group 2, cats treated with azithromycin, tinidazole, ranitidine, and bismuth once daily for 4 days; group 3, cats treated with clarithromycin, metronidazole, ranitidine, and bismuth twice daily for 4 days; and group 4, cats treated with clarithromycin, metronidazole, ranitidine, and bismuth twice daily for 7 days. Efficacy was determined on the basis of results of a urea breath test performed 10 and 42 days after end of treatment. RESULTS: Ten days after treatment, 0 of 4, 4 of 6, 11 of 11, and 8 of 8 cats in groups 1 to 4, respectively, had a negative result for a urea breath test. Forty-two days after treatment, 0 of 4, 3 of 6, 7 of 11, and 4 of 8 cats in groups 1 to 4, respectively, still had a negative result. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Treatments used in this study regularly suppressed breath 13CO2 production. However, although 23 of 25 (92%) cats had negative results for a urea breath test 10 days after treatment, only 14 of 25 (56%) cats still had negative results 42 days after treatment. It is difficult to achieve a definitive long-term cure in cats naturally infected with H heilmannii.  相似文献

Pyloric adenocarcinoma was diagnosed in a ferret with clinical signs of gastric distention. The development of this tumor may be related to Helicobacter mustelae infection in the gastric mucosa of ferrets. Pyloric adenocarcinoma has only recently been reported in ferrets and should be considered as a differential diagnosis for gastric distention in this species.  相似文献

Mycobacterium genavense infection was diagnosed in two adult ferrets. Disseminated mycobacteriosis was diagnosed in a castrated 5-year-old sable ferret with generalised peripheral lymph node enlargement and a proliferative lesion of the conjunctiva of the nictitating membrane. The diagnosis was based on characteristic cytology and sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene amplified using the polymerase chain reaction from fresh biopsy material. Therapy with rifampicin, clofazimine and clarithromycin probably cured the infection. An entire 4-year-old female ferret with conjunctival swelling, serous ocular discharge and swelling of the subcutaneous tissues of the nasal bridge was diagnosed as having M genavense infection on the basis of typical cytology, histopathology and sequence analysis of 16S rRNA amplicons from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue. This patient was treated successfully using rifampicin. Both ferrets subsequently died as a result of other disease conditions, 10 and 4 months following initiation of therapy, respectively. This is the first report documenting M genavense as a cause of disseminated mycobacterial disease in ferrets. Conjunctival involvement may be a feature of disseminated mycobacteriosis in the ferret. The possibility that these infections were the consequence of a ferret retrovirus infection should be considered further.  相似文献

H. bizzozeronii CCUG 35045, a new canine gastric Helicobacter spp. was used for experimental infection of four weaned puppies at 7 weeks of age. Controls were four nonchallenged puppies. The puppies originated from two dams which had Helicobacter salomonis infection in biopsy samples taken 3 weeks before the delivery but which had urease, brush cytology and culture-negative biopsy samples taken 7 weeks after antimicrobial treatment (metronidazole, amoxicillin, bismuth subcitrate). Both dams were detected urease- and Helicobacter-positive again three and a half months after therapy. Dam B was shown to be colonised with the similar genotype of H. salomonis for more than 2 years. Unexpectedly, H. salomonis was also cultured from gastric biopsy samples of the nonchallenged puppies three times during 7 months. When H. salomonis isolates of dams and puppies were studied by ribotyping (HaeIII, ClaI or PstI) they were shown to be identical although the HaeIII and PstI REA patterns of dam A differed from the patterns of dam B and nonchallenged group by one fragment. PFGE pattern analysis of NotI digests, however, revealed that the isolates of the puppies were identical with the isolates of dam B, and differed from the isolates of dam A. The isolates of the dams and puppies in the nonchallenged group were metronidazole-resistant. The antimicrobial therapy had merely suppressed, but not eradicated, the infection of the dams. These studies suggested that puppies may acquire gastric Helicobacter infection from dams during the lactation period and puppies can infect each other during their early life. PFGE pattern analysis was shown to be a more distinguishing method than ribotyping to study the similarity of the isolates.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical and endocrine responses of ferrets with adrenocortical disease (ACD) to treatment with a slow-release implant of deslorelin acetate. ANIMALS: 15 ferrets with ACD. PROCEDURE: Ferrets were treated SC with a single slow-release, 3-mg implant of deslorelin acetate. Plasma estradiol, androstenedione, and 17-hydroxyprogesterone concentrations were measured before and after treatment and at relapse of clinical signs; at that time, the adrenal glands were grossly or ultrasonographically measured and affected glands that were surgically removed were examined histologically. RESULTS: Compared with findings before deslorelin treatment, vulvar swelling, pruritus, sexual behaviors, and aggression were significantly decreased or eliminated within 14 days of implantation; hair regrowth was evident 4 to 6 weeks after treatment. Within 1 month of treatment, plasma hormone concentrations significantly decreased and remained decreased until clinical relapse. Mean time to recurrence of clinical signs was 13.7 +/- 3.5 months (range, 8.5 to 20.5 months). In 5 ferrets, large palpable tumors developed within 2 months of clinical relapse; 3 of these ferrets were euthanatized because of adrenal gland tumor metastasis to the liver or tumor necrosis. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In ferrets with ACD, a slow-release deslorelin implant appears promising as a treatment to temporarily eliminate clinical signs and decrease plasma steroid hormone concentrations. Deslorelin may not decrease adrenal tumor growth in some treated ferrets. Deslorelin implants may be useful in the long-term management of hormone-induced sequelae in ferrets with ACD and in treatment of animals that are considered at surgical or anesthetic risk.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficacy of ronidazole (RDZ), tinidazole (TDZ), and metronidazole (MDZ) against Tritrichomonas foetus in vitro and of RDZ for treatment of feline naturally occurring or experimentally induced T. foetus infection. ANIMALS: A cat naturally infected with T. foetus infection and diarrhea. Ten specific-pathogen-free (SPF) kittens. PROCEDURE: RDZ, TDZ, and MDZ were tested for activity against 3 different feline isolates of T. foetus in vitro. RDZ then was administered to a naturally infected cat at 10 mg/kg PO q24h for 10 days. SPF kittens were infected orogastrically with feline T. foetus and treated with either placebo or RDZ (10 mg/kg PO q12h for 14 days). Cats with relapsing infection or those receiving placebo were treated subsequently with RDZ (either 30 or 50 mg/kg PO q12h for 14 days). Feces were examined for T. foetus by direct microscopy, culture, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing weekly. RESULTS: Both RDZ and TDZ killed T. foetus at concentrations >0.1 microg/mL in vitro. In the naturally infected cat, RDZ abolished diarrhea and T. foetus infection for 85 days after treatment, at which time infection and diarrhea relapsed. Retreatment with RDZ eradicated diarrhea and T. foetus infection for over 407 days. In experimentally induced infection, RDZ at 10 mg/kg caused initial improvement, but infection relapsed in all 5 cats 2 to 20 weeks after treatment. At 30 or 50 mg/kg, 10/10 cats were negative for T. foetus infection for follow-up durations of 21 to 30 weeks after treatment. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Oral administration of RDZ at 30 to 50 mg/kg q12h for 14 days resolved diarrhea and eradicated infection (on the basis of polymerase chain reaction [PCR] testing) in 1 naturally infected cat and 10 experimentally inoculated cats receiving a different isolate of T. foetus.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine if intermediate footrot (IFR) can be eradicated from a flock of sheep by inspection and culling of cases during a non-transmission period and if prior antibiotic treatment or vaccination increases the likelihood of eradication. PROCEDURE: A replicated field experiment that compared the three eradication strategies was followed by an observational study of the best of these applied in a commercial flock of 3000 sheep. RESULTS: In the replicated experiment, IFR was eradicated either by inspection and culling alone, or when combined with vaccination. Eradication failed when the sheep were treated with parenteral antibiotics before inspection and culling during the non-transmission period. In the whole-flock program, eradication by repeated inspection and culling of footrot cases during the non-transmission period was successful and the flock remained free of infection 3 years later. CONCLUSIONS: IFR can be eradicated by inspection and culling but latent infections, which may persist undetected for at least 34 weeks, require surveillance inspections to be repeated during the non-transmission phase of the program. The use of parenteral antibiotics as an aid to the eradication of IFR is contraindicated.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of oral administration of melatonin on clinical signs, tumor size, and serum steroid hormone concentrations in ferrets with adrenocortical disease. DESIGN: Noncontrolled clinical trial. ANIMALS: 10 adult ferrets with clinical signs of adrenocortical disease (confirmed via serum steroid hormone concentration assessments). PROCEDURES: Melatonin (0.5 mg) was administered orally to ferrets once daily for 1 year. At 4-month intervals, a complete physical examination; abdominal ultrasonographic examination (including adrenal gland measurement); CBC; serum biochemical analyses; and assessment of serum estradiol, androstenedione, and 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone concentrations were performed. Serum prolactin and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate concentrations were evaluated at the first, second, and last examinations, and serum cortisol concentration was evaluated at the first and last examinations. RESULTS: Daily oral administration of melatonin greatly affected clinical signs of adrenocortical disease in ferrets; changes included hair regrowth, decreased pruritus, increased activity level and appetite, and decreased vulva or prostate size. Mean width of the abnormally large adrenal glands was significantly increased after the 12-month treatment period. Recurrence of clinical signs was detected in 6 ferrets at the 8-month evaluation. Compared with pretreatment values, serum 17alpha-hydroxyprogesterone and prolactin concentrations were significantly increased and decreased after 12 months, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that melatonin is a useful, easily administered, palliative treatment to decrease clinical signs associated with adrenocortical disease in ferrets, and positive effects of daily treatment were evident for at least an 8-month period. Oral administration of melatonin did not decrease adrenal gland tumor growth in treated ferrets.  相似文献

AIM: To determine the incidence of Helicobacter mustelae in stoats (Mustela erminea) in New Zealand. METHODS: Helicobacter-like organisms and total genomic DNA were isolated from gastric tissue of stoats and identified using a combination of bacterial culture, phenotypic testing and molecular techniques. RESULTS: A Helicobacter-specific 16S rRNA polymerase chain reaction product was detected in 16/32 gastric tissue biopsies tested. Nine of 13 partially sequenced 16S rRNA DNA identified H. mustelae 16S DNA. Bacteria, subsequently identified as H. mustelae, were successfully cultured from the stomachs of 4/32 stoats. Other Helicobacter species were also identified by DNA sequence analysis, but were not cultured. CONCLUSIONS: Helicobacter mustelae is present in stoats from both the North and South Islands of New Zealand.  相似文献

AIMS: To demonstrate the transmission of Mycobacterium bovis infection from experimentally infected ferrets (Mustela furo) to non-infected ferrets in a laboratory setting, using three different isotypes of M. bovis, and to observe ferret behaviour that might be implicated in disease transmission. METHODS: Three female ferrets, each experimentally infected with a unique strain of M. bovis, were housed together with six female and two male non-infected ferrets in an isolation facility. Transmission of infection was monitored clinically, serologically (using an ELISA test), bacteriologically, histologically, and by isotype analysis of M. bovis isolates using spoligotyping to determine whether or not transmission of each strain occurred. Ferret behaviour was observed using a time-lapse video recorder. RESULTS: Transmission of M. bovis infection was confirmed in two male and four female ferrets. Isotype analysis showed that of the experimentally infected females, one did not infect any other ferret, another transmitted M. bovis to one ferret before it died prematurely 49 days post-infection, and the third, which was cannibalised, appears to have transmitted M. bovis to both males and three females. However, two of these latter three females had died before the event of cannibalism took place. One female was infected with two strains. Several behavioural interactions were observed that could have resulted in M. bovis transmission, including den sharing, sniffing of orifices and faeces, cannibalism and aggressive breeding behaviour. CONCLUSIONS: Horizontal transmission of M. bovis infection was demonstrated in ferrets under experimental housing conditions. Routes of transmission may involve cannibalism and factors such as den sharing, playing, fighting, mating, and sniffing of faeces.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of leuprolide acetate, a long-acting gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog, in ferrets with adrenocortical diseases. DESIGN: Case series. ANIMALS: 20 ferrets with adrenocortical disease diagnosed on the basis of clinical signs and plasma sex hormone concentrations. PROCEDURE: Ferrets were treated with leuprolide (100 microg, IM, once), and plasma hormone concentrations were measured before and 3 to 6 weeks after treatment. RESULTS: Leuprolide treatment resulted in significant reductions in plasma estradiol, 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone, androstenedione, and dehydroepiandrosterone concentrations and eliminated or reduced clinical signs associated with adrenocortical disease. Decreases in vulvar swelling, pruritus, and undesirable sexual behaviors and aggression were evident 14 days after treatment; hair regrowth was evident by 4 weeks after treatment. The response to treatment was transitory, and clinical signs recurred in all ferrets. Mean +/- SEM time to recurrence was 3.7 +/- 0.4 months (range, 1.5 to 8 months). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that leuprolide can be safely used to temporarily eliminate clinical signs and reduce sex hormone concentrations in ferrets with adrenocortical diseases. However, the safety of long-term leuprolide use in ferrets has not been investigated, and the long-term effects of leuprolide in ferrets with nodular adrenal gland hyperplasia or adrenal gland tumors are unknown.  相似文献

Two ferrets were diagnosed with pneumonia due to Mycobacterium abscessus. Both cases were treated successfully using clarithromycin after positive cultures were obtained via unguided bronchoalveolar lavage. This is the first time M abscessus has been isolated in our laboratory and the first report of this organism causing disease in companion animals in Australia. Underlying respiratory tract disease was thought to be an important factor in the development of the infections. Thorough investigation of chronic lower respiratory tract disease in ferrets is recommended as this species appears predisposed to atypical infections.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the antitumor and toxic effects of treatment with doxorubicin combined with piroxicam or doxorubicin alone for multicentric lymphoma in dogs. DESIGN: Nonrandomized clinical trial. ANIMALS: 75 dogs with multicentric lymphoma. PROCEDURE: 33 dogs were treated with doxorubicin (30 mg/m2, IV, q 21 d, for 3 doses) and piroxicam (0.3 mg/kg [0.14 mg/lb], PO, q 24 h); results were compared with a historical control group of 42 dogs treated with doxorubicin (30 mg/M2, IV, q 21 d, for 3 doses) alone. Results-The percentages of dogs that had remission with doxorubicin-piroxicam treatment (79%) or doxorubicin treatment alone (74%) were not significantly different. Median duration of first remission was 130 days with doxorubicin-piroxicam and 147 days with doxorubicin alone; these values were not significantly different. Severe toxicosis was observed in 22% of dogs treated with doxorubicin-piroxicam and 17% of dogs treated with doxorubicin alone. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Both treatment protocols were efficacious and well tolerated. The doxorubicin-piroxicam treatment was no more effective regarding response rate, remission duration, or survival duration, compared with the control group treated with doxorubicin alone.  相似文献

Objective: To summarize typical clinical signs, characterize the anticipated course of action, and give treatment recommendations for ibuprofen ingestion in ferrets.
Design: Retrospective study
Patients: Records of 43 cases of ibuprofen ingestion in ferrets that were reported between January 1996-March 2000, to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC).
Measurements and Main Results: Twenty-seven (93.1%) ferrets that had ingested ibuprofen developed neurologic signs, such as depression, coma, ataxia, recumbency, tremors, and weakness. In addition, 16 cases (55.2%) had one or more GI effects including anorexia, vomiting, retching or gagging, diarrhea, and melena. Polydipsia, polyuria, dysuria, renal failure, weight loss, shallow breathing, metabolic acidosis, dehydration, and hypothermia were also reported. Death was reported in 4 cases. The lowest dose associated with death was 220 mg/kg.
Conclusion: Data in this study indicate that clinical signs of ibuprofen toxicosis in ferrets are more severe than those expected at similar dosages in dogs. The reason for this difference is poorly understood since the pathophysiology of ibuprofen is relatively unknown in ferrets. The onset of clinical signs appeared to occurr soon after ingestion and the toxic effects in ferrets typically involve the CNS, GI and renal systems. Treatment for ibuprofen toxicosis in the ferret includes stabilization, gastrointestinal decontamination, fluid diuresis, GI protection, and supportive care.(J Vet Emerg Crit Care 2001; 11(1):53–59)  相似文献

AIM: To determine the relationship between the prevalence of macroscopic Mycobacterium bovis infection in feral ferrets (Mustela furo) and the abundance of brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula). METHODS: The predictive power of a previously reported positive association between the prevalence of macroscopic M. bovis infection in ferrets and possum abundance was examined by undertaking surveys of M. bovis infection in ferrets at sites of low and high possum abundance. The association was then tested by a manipulative experiment that measured changes in the prevalence of macroscopic M. bovis infection in feral ferrets after reducing possum abundance. RESULTS: The positive relationship between the prevalence of macroscopic M. bovis infection in ferrets and possum abundance remained valid for new survey data, although the goodness of fit of the relationship was reduced. Experimentally reducing possum abundance reduced the odds of macroscopic M. bovis infection in ferrets by 80% in the years immediately following possum control (Odds Ratio=0.23, p=0.003). CONCLUSIONS: There is a causal link between possum abundance and the prevalence of macroscopic M. bovis infection in feral ferrets in areas in which M. bovis infection is known to occur in ferret populations. This suggests that possum-to-ferret transmission of disease occurs and accounts for most of the disease evident in ferret populations, though does not determine whether ferrets are spillover or maintenance hosts of M. bovis. Management to reduce the prevalence of M. bovis infection in ferrets should consider reducing possum abundance as a control tactic. OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of adverse events in ferrets vaccinated with a modified-live avian cell culture canine distemper virus vaccine licensed for use in ferrets, an inactivated rabies vaccine licensed for use in ferrets, or both. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 143 ferrets. PROCEDURE: Medical records were reviewed to identify ferrets that had an adverse event after vaccination. RESULTS: Adverse events developed within 25 minutes after vaccination in 13 ferrets. One ferret developed an adverse event after receiving a distemper and a rabies vaccine simultaneously and developed a second adverse event the following year after receiving the rabies vaccine alone. Therefore, a total of 14 adverse events were identified. All adverse events were an anaphylactic reaction characterized by generalized hyperemia, hypersalivation, and vomiting. Ten of the 14 anaphylactic reactions occurred after ferrets received both vaccines, 3 occurred after ferrets received the distemper vaccine alone, and 1 occurred after a ferret received the rabies vaccine alone. Incidences of adverse events after administration of both vaccines, the distemper vaccine alone, and the rabies vaccine alone were 5.6, 5.9, and 5.6%, respectively. Ferrets that had an anaphylactic reaction were significantly older at the time of vaccination than were ferrets that did not. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that there may be a high incidence of anaphylactic reactions after vaccination of domestic ferrets. Ferrets should be observed for at least 25 minutes after vaccination, and veterinarians who vaccinate ferrets should be prepared to treat anaphylactic reactions.  相似文献

AIMS: To examine the relationships between the prevalence of macroscopic Mycobacterium bovis infection (bovine tuberculosis) in feral ferrets (Mustela furo), the abundance of ferrets, and the abundance of brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) . METHODS: Data on the prevalence of macroscopic M. bovis infection in ferrets, abundance of ferrets, and abundance of possums were analysed from 12 comparable independent broad-scale surveys. RESULTS: The prevalence of macroscopic M. bovis infection in ferrets was positively correlated with possum abundance but unrelated to ferret abundance, suggesting that possums are an important source of M. bovis infection in ferrets. The lack of any positive relationship between the prevalence of M. bovis infection in ferrets and ferret abundance does not support the hypothesis that per capita transmission rates, and therefore disease prevalence, should be higher at higher ferret abundance. CONCLUSION: The results support the hypothesis that tuberculous possums are the major underlying source of M. bovis infection for feral ferrets in New Zealand.  相似文献

Parvoviruses from mink (mink enteritis virus [MEV]), cats (feline panleukopenia virus [FPV]), raccoons (raccoon parvovirus [RPV]), and dogs (canine parvovirus [CPV]) were compared. Restriction enzyme analysis of the viral replicative-form DNA revealed no consistent differences between FPV and RPV isolates, but CPV and MEV isolates could be distinguished readily from other virus types. Feline panleukopenia virus, RPV, and MEV, but not CPV, replicated to high titers in mink. However, on the first passage, disease and microscopic lesions were observed only in mink inoculated with MEV. Feline panleukopenia virus and RPV isolates replicated in ferrets, but disease or microscopic lesions were not observed. Feline panleukopenia virus and RPV isolates could be passaged repeatedly in mink and ferrets. Virulence of FPV and RPV isolates was low compared with that of MEV, and only a single mink inoculated with FPV or with RPV developed clinical disease on the sixth passage of virus.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine incidence of and risk factors for adverse events associated with distemper and rabies vaccine administration in ferrets. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. ANIMALS: 3,587 ferrets that received a rabies or distemper vaccine between January 1, 2002, and December 31, 2003. PROCEDURES: Electronic medical records were searched for possible vaccine-associated adverse events. Adverse events were classified by attending veterinarians as nonspecific vaccine reactions, allergic reactions, or anaphylaxis. Patient information that was collected included age, weight, sex, cumulative number of distemper and rabies vaccinations received, clinical signs, and treatment. The association between potential risk factors and occurrence of an adverse event was estimated with logistic regression. RESULTS: 30 adverse events were recorded. The adverse event incidence rates for administration of rabies vaccine alone, distemper vaccine alone, and rabies and distemper vaccines together were 0.51%, 1.00%, and 0.85%, respectively. These rates were not significantly different. All adverse events occurred immediately following vaccine administration and most commonly consisted of vomiting and diarrhea (52%) or vomiting alone (31%). Age, sex, and body weight were not significantly associated with occurrence of adverse events, but adverse event incidence rate increased as the cumulative number of distemper or rabies vaccinations received increased. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, only the cumulative number of distemper vaccinations received was significantly associated with the occurrence of an adverse event.
