ABSTRACT

In the allocation of collection resources, it is important to have a good understanding of the teaching, instruction and research needs of faculty and graduate students. Data related to the use of electronic databases, journals, books, etc. is helpful; however, this data does not reflect the nature and impact of the information retrieved, but merely provides a general idea of the number of times items have been searched, retrieved or borrowed. By identifying and analyzing faculty and graduate students' publications and grant proposals to determine where researchers are publishing and what sources they are citing in their research, the Library can assess how well it is supplying a core of literature to meet research needs. To this end, this study analyzes the publication and citation patterns of food science faculty at the University of Arkansas for a fourteen-year period, 1990–2003. The findings show that faculty are using and citing materials ranging from 1 to 22 years old and that 85 titles account for only 13.67% of the total journals cited but for 77.75% of the citations. It is assumed that these 85 titles constitute the core journal titles for food science research.  相似文献

Foodline® is a trio of databases from U.K.-based Leatherhead Food Research Association providing international coverage of food marketing, technical and regulatory information. Foodline®: International Food Market Data is a bibliographic database of global market information abstracted from some 250 food and beverage business and trade journals, statistical publications and market studies. Foodline®: Food Science and Technology consists of citations and abstracts from over 550 core scientific and technical journals, books, reports and conference papers. Foodline®: Current Food Legislation is a unique database which summarizes the provisions of current food additive regulations for over 90 countries and food composition and labeling standards for the U.S. and seven European Union countries. ABSTRACT

During the spring and summer of 2016, the University of Minnesota Libraries joined 18 other institutions to participate in Ithaka S+R's Research Support Services Program to explore agricultural scholars' research focus, research methods, and publishing practices. This report summarizes our local findings, resulting from 16 interviews with University of Minnesota faculty from the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resources Sciences on the Twin Cities campus. It also offers suggestions for agriculture libraries and librarians based on the data we have gathered.  相似文献

This study examined the 130 current full-text titles in the BioOne.1 and BioOne.2 collections to determine whether they are peer-reviewed, contain book reviews, and are supplied by document delivery vendors. We identified indexing coverage in 11 major databases in agriculture and life sciences: Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA), AGRICOLA, Biological Abstracts, BIOSIS Previews, CAB Abstracts, Current Contents, Environmental Sciences and Pollution Abstracts, GeoRef, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and Zoological Record. We concluded that the majority of the titles in BioOne collections are refereed and scholarly, indexed in several of the major indexing and abstracting journals in the field of agriculture and life sciences, and available via several major document delivery vendors. We find both BioOne collections to be valuable, useful, cost-effective journal aggregations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

As part of a cross-institutional collaboration organized by Ithaka S+R, Oregon State University Libraries faculty interviewed 15 faculty members in the College of Agricultural Sciences about their research, publishing, and information management practices. The work of Agricultural Sciences faculty is uniquely influenced by their regional geography and climate, as well as by their local and disciplinary communities of practice, which includes both growers and scholars. Findings showed that publishing decisions, access to research, barriers to access, and a systems thinking approach were influenced by behaviors and standards established by these various communities. Implications for the libraries' role in discovery, access, and dissemination are considered and discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The Ohio State University Libraries was one of 19 institutions collaborating in the Ithaka S+R Research Support Services for the Field of Agriculture study. Based on a series of individual, semistructured interviews with faculty researchers affiliated with the agricultural sciences at the Ohio State University, the study gathered information about current research practices. The study highlighted challenges of the agricultural research process and identified opportunities for improving research support services for agricultural scientists.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The University of Florida (UF) George A. Smathers Libraries is one of 19 institutions that participated in an Ithaka S+R Research Support Services investigation of agricultural sciences. The authors conducted a qualitative analysis of research support services based on one-on-one semistructured interviews with 15 faculty of the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences in 2016. A number of core themes emerged from the analysis of research practices in the local study at UF. Core themes included finding appropriate literature, data management issues and tools, repositories for sharing research products, and research dissemination. This report summarizes a subset of these results, focusing on themes related to academic library services that support agricultural scholars research needs.  相似文献

Facilitating access to journals for a multidisciplinary field of study requires an understanding of the literature used by those researchers. This study examines the journals used for publication and those cited by 85 faculty affiliates of the New Mexico State University (NMSU) Water Science and Education Center (WSEC), a multidisciplinary faculty group with a water research focus. The authors have used information gained from this study to enhance collections and outreach at NMSU. This study also adds to the literature on citation analysis as a tool for informing collection development and management.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study mapped the scholarly literature in the discipline of food science using co-citation analysis and explored the relationships found within this literature. Using the Journal of Food Science, an examination of a random sample of its articles published from 2000 to 2002 yielded a ranked list of frequently-cited journals. The top thirteen most frequently-cited journals formed a core set for further analysis. Using the SciSearch online database and a standard statistical package (SPSS), a two-dimensional map was created, relationships between the journals were studied, and the discipline of food science was explored. Food science journals tended to be either industry-specific (e.g., dairy science) or industry-general. The journals also tended to focus on either “pure” science (e.g., chemistry) or on applied science and technology. Of the thirteen journals mapped, six fell within the area of pure science, while four were in the area of applied science. Interestingly, three journals fell on the axis line dividing the two. At the same time, seven journals had the characteristics of being industry-general, while six were more industry-specific. The results are consistent with previous indications of the interdisciplinary nature of the field of food science, drawing as it does from many fields such as chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and agricultural science.  相似文献

Through a United States Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (USDA CSREES) Higher Education Challenge Grant, a team of teaching faculty and librarians at Rutgers University developed an interdisciplinary course, “Food and Nutrition Business Information and Communication.” The course employed an active learning approach that involved a unique collaboration between various academic disciplines; the Rutgers University Libraries; the School of Communication, Information, and Library Studies (SCILS); and the Rutgers Food Manufacturing Technology Facility (FMT). In the course, teams of students from the departments involved worked collaboratively to help solve an actual research problem from industry partners working at FMT. Three examples of student problem solving are presented and assessed using the rubric developed for the course. The course actively involves librarians and demonstrates the importance of information literacy skills in today's information economy.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article presents the results of one of numerous and coordinated qualitative studies carried out at land-grant universities across the United States, to improve our understanding of agricultural research practices and identify new avenues for library services to meet the changing needs of agricultural faculty and research staff. We interviewed agricultural researchers across several departments at Cornell University about their research practices including research dissemination methods, data sharing, their use of primary and secondary resources, and current challenges in conducting agricultural research. Emerging themes included stakeholder engagement, collaboration and interdisciplinarity, the impact of technology, and research inputs and outputs.  相似文献

This bibliographic study gathered information about the data practices of crop scientists from their publications. Two recent articles were reviewed from each faculty member in the Department of Crop Sciences, University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. The goals of this study were to learn the common data types used in crop sciences research, to describe data reuse and sharing practices in the literature, and to highlight resources for acquiring and sharing data, especially repositories with an agricultural emphasis.  相似文献

Selecting a service involves evaluating many criteria, including price, ease of use, user interface, value-added information, and title coverage. This study examines four current awareness services, Current Contents: Agriculture, Biology and Environmental Science, CARL UnCover, ContentsFirst, and CAB ACCESS, for their coverage of serials in agriculture and related fields. The serial lists from the services were examined for overlapping and unique titles, subject coverage, and publication type. UnCover was found to include not only the greatest number of titles but also the highest percentage of unique titles. However, because a relatively low percentage of the unique titles in UnCover are academic/scholarly and foreign/multilingual, it is recommended that a second service be considered to complement UnCover.  相似文献

After reviewing previously published literature in citation analysis and literature mapping, this study mapped the literature of food science and explored the relationships found within it. Using articles published in the Journal of Food Science from 2003 through 2005, a stratified random sample of citations was studied to yield a ranked list of the thirteen most frequently cited journals, which formed a core set for further analysis. Using the Science Citation Index and a standard statistical package (SPSS13), a two-dimensional map was created, relationships between the journals were studied, and the discipline of food science was explored. The study is an extension of previously published research covering the years 2000–2002 and attempts to analyze and compare the results across time frames.  相似文献

为深入了解土壤环境中多环芳烃研究的全球状况和前沿动态,客观反映相关国家、机构和个人在该领域的科学能力和影响,采用ISI Web of Knowledge的Web of Science引文数据库,对1900—2014年间该库收录的土壤环境中多环芳烃研究领域的相关文献进行了计量分析。结果表明,该领域全球发文量总体呈持续快速上升趋势,美国的发文量、总被引频次和H指数均居榜首,中国的发文量和总被引频次居次席,但篇均被引频次明显偏低;中国科学院和英国兰卡斯特大学的发文量和H指数居研究机构的前两位,篇均被引频次排名最高的研究机构是美国马萨诸塞大学;英国兰卡斯特大学的Jones K C等两位学者发文量和H指数最高,北达克科特大学Hawthorne S B的篇均被引频次最高,国内学者中北京大学的陶澍和浙江大学的朱利中最有影响力;该领域的主要期刊有Environmental ScienceTechnology、Chemosphere和Environmental Pollution等;该领域的研究热点多集中于土壤环境中多环芳烃的降解及生物修复、多环芳烃在各介质中的溶解与吸附、以及多环芳烃的源解析等方向,“中国”相关研究在近5年中占重要地位。  相似文献

We evaluated soil contamination research based on a bibliometric analysis of 14,090 articles published in journals in the Science Citation Index and Social Sciences Citation Index bibliographic databases from 1999 to 2012, which revealed scientific outputs, subject categories and major journals, international collaboration and geographic distribution of authors and countries, keywords, and hot issues. The results suggested that research on soil contamination developed well with increasing scientific production and research collaboration. Environmental science, engineering environment, soil science, and applied microbiology were the most frequently used subject categories in soil contamination studies. Chemosphere was the most active journal in this field. The clusters of authors were more in the USA, Western European countries, China, Japan, and India. Q. X. Zhou of Nankai University was the most productive author, and S. P. Mcgrath of Rothamsted Research England published the most influential articles. The USA exceeded all other countries with the most independent and collaborative papers in research on global soil contamination. Heavy metal pollution was the hottest issue, and bioremediation is the most promising research topic in combating against heavy metal pollution of soils. The status of publication on soil contamination research described here is significant for researchers on soil contamination in their future work.  相似文献

Nitrification and ammonia volatility are two important impediments to nitrogen (N) use efficiency and crop uptake around the world. Nutrisphere® is a relatively new product whose manufacturer claims both nitrification and urea volatilization inhibiting properties. Urea coated with Nutrisphere is and the resulting fertilizer is called Nutrisphere®-N urea, or Nutrisphere-N (NSN). Eight field studies on spring (Triticum aestivum L.) or durum [T. turgidum L. subsp duram (Desf.) Husn.] wheat in North Dakota, three field studies in Mississippi/Arkansas on rice (Oryza sativa L.), four laboratory experiments in North Dakota and one in Arkansas were conducted to determine the nitrification and urea volatilization inhibiting ability of NSN compared with urea alone. Results of field and laboratory experiments revealed that the product has no nitrification or urea volatilization inhibiting properties at the recommended rates and spring wheat and rice did not benefit from the application of NSN to urea.  相似文献
