The susceptibility of some soils in the high rainfall zone of Nigeria to soil erosion must be measured regularly for better soil management. A number of techniques have been adopted for the determination of this soil loss parameter. The aim of this study is to determine the soil characteristics that relate significantly to erodibility. Soil samples collected from 0–20 cm depth from 10 different locations in the upper rainforest area were analysed for particle size distribution, water‐stable aggregates, exchangeable cations, organic carbon, soil dispersion and aggregating indices. The soils are mainly Acrisols, Nitosols, Gleysols and Ferralsol in the FAO classification while their textures are sands to sandy‐clay‐loam. They are very unstable in water as reflected in the higher values of WSA >0·50 mm and the mean‐weight diameter that ranged from 0·50 to 2·03 mm. The dispersion ratio for the soils are between 0·26 and 0·69 while clay dispersion ratio also ranged from 0·24 to 0·80. Revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) erodibility model values (K) were from 0·03 to 0·06 Mg h MJ−1 mm−1. These parameters can be effectively used in predicting soil erodibility, though their predictability varied in ranking of soil erodibility. In spite of this variability these indices can be used for potential erosion hazard determination by agricultural extension staff to avoid crop failures and other negative influence of soil erosion. The soil parameters are easy to determine and will be a valuable instrument when faster approaches to erosion control measures are required. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The wind erosion equation (WEQ) was used for several decades for predicting soil loss by wind erosion, but few systematic studies on the uncertainty of predicting wind erosion have been conducted. Several researchers found that WEQ is not accurately representing soil erosion and under‐represents soil erodibility that consequently results in WEQ underestimations. WEQ was modified under Canadian conditions for the National Agri‐Environmental Health Analysis and Reporting Program, referred as (WEQ‐NAHARP). The model, input, and parameter uncertainties that control model efficiency were used to analyze the local and universal uncertainties for WEQ‐NAHARP. One and ninety‐nine percentiles were used as lower and upper boundaries of uncertainty bound when using general likelihood uncertainty estimation for estimating the uncertainty of WEQ‐NAHARP's prediction. The soil erodibility (I ), climate factor (C ), and soil surface roughness factor (K ) were found as the three most sensitive factors in predicting wind erosion in WEQ‐NAHARP. The vegetation cover factor (V ) was discovered not sensitive to the prediction model as it is less than 1,000 kg ha−1 and became very sensitive as V ‐value is greater than 5,000 kg ha−1 . Field length along the prevailing wind erosion direction (L ) and V have lower local sensitivity indexes than the other three factors. WEQ‐NAHARP underestimated wind erosion rate of Pampas, Argentina, and overestimated at Washington State, USA. This probably reflected the nature of WEQ‐NAHARP's behavior, which had a great uncertainty of its prediction. The model appears to underestimate total annual soil loss for coarse soil and overestimate annual soil loss for finer soil. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The effects of zeolite application (0, 4, 8 and16 g kg?1) and saline water (0.5, 1.5, 3.0 and 5.0 dS m?1) on saturated hydraulic conductivity (K s) and sorptivity (S) in different soils were evaluated under laboratory conditions. Results showed that K s was increased at salinity levels of 0.5‐1.5 dS m?1 in clay loam and loam with 8 and 4 g zeolite kg?1 soil, respectively, and at salinity levels of 3.0–5.0 dS m?1 with 16 g zeolite kg?1 soil. K s was decreased by using low and high salinity levels in sandy loam with application of 8 and 16 g zeolite kg?1, respectively. In clay loam, salinity levels of 0.5–3.0 dS m?1 with application of 16 g kg?1 zeolite and 5.0 dS m?1 with application of 8 g zeolite kg?1 soil resulted in the lowest values of S. In loam, all salinity levels with application of 16 g zeolite kg?1 soil increased S compared with other zeolite application rates. In sandy loam, only a salinity level of 0.5 dS m?1 with application of 4 g zeolite kg?1 soil increased S. Other zeolite applications decreased S, whereas increasing the zeolite application to 16 g kg?1 soil resulted in the lowest value of S.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Pedotransfer functions (PTFs) have been used to save time and cost in predicting certain soil properties, such as soil erodibility (K-factor). The main objectives of this study were to develop appropriate PTFs to predict the K-factor, and then compare new PTFs with Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) K-factor models. The K-factor was measured using 40 erosion plots under natural rainfall in Simakan Watershed, an area of 350 km2 in central of Iran. The Regression Tree (RT) and Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) were used to develop PTFs for predicting the K-factor. The result showed that the mean of measured K was 0.01 t h MJ?1 mm?1. The mean K value predicted by USLE and RUSLE was 2.08 and 2.84 times more than the measured K, respectively. Although calcium carbonate was not considered in the original USLE and RUSLE K-factors, it appeared in the advanced PTFs due to its strong positive significant impact on aggregate stability and soil infiltration rate, resulting in decreased K-factor. The results also showed that the RT with R2 = 0.84 had higher performance than developed MLR, USLE and RUSLE for the K estimation.  相似文献

Due to the heavy costs of wind erosion control measures, the correct selection of technical methods is indispensable for a sustainable land management in arid and semiarid regions. Thus, the main goal of this research was to investigate the feasibility of using the clay minerals (i.e., bentonite), polyvinyl acetate and palm biochar for reducing the wind erosion in deserts surrounding the cities. The treatments were sprayed uniformly onto the containers (5 × 35 × 105 cm, 0.37 m2) with sand (collected from sand dunes surrounding Isfahan city, central Iran) in 3 replicates. The experiments were conducted in a wind tunnel with sequential repetitions after 1, 10, and 20 weeks. Among the studied treatments, the bentonite planters demonstrated to be the most effective soil erosion control measure by reducing soil loss and improving sand ablation. On the contrary, the palm biochar had less influence on the soil erosion control and only a slight effect on the threshold speed. For the future, further studies are required to select the best and most relevant soil erosion control measures under field conditions considering all the environmental aspects in arid regions of Iran.  相似文献

Soil erosion by water causes substantial on‐site degradation and off‐site damages in the densely populated state of North Rhine‐Westphalia (Germany). Measures of soil conservation should be adjusted to soil erodibilities and should be based on an understanding of the processes involved in water erosion including aggregate breakdown, rainsplash erosion, surface sealing, and soil loss. For a state‐wide assessment of erosion processes and erodibilities, we tested representative cultivated soils of North Rhine‐Westphalia in laboratory and field experiments with artificial rain. In the laboratory experiments described in this paper, rainsplash erosion, sealing susceptibility, and interrill erodibility of 25 topsoils filled in 0.5 m2 boxes were investigated. Results of different aggregate‐stability tests correlate with organic‐matter contents but not with parameters of rainsplash or soil loss. On most soil materials, rainsplash increases or maintains constant rates in the course of the simulation runs indicating that the soil surface did not attain a higher shear resistance. High sealing susceptibilities are found for soils of quite different textures ranging from loam sand to silt clay, whereas other silt clays, clay loams, and some clay silts maintain high infiltration rates. A trend of increasing sealing susceptibility and total soil loss with increasing clay content is observed for the loam sands to sand loams. Dynamics of soil loss is largely governed by runoff rates. Total soil loss is also determined by sediment concentration in surface runoff, which is low on most clayey soils, on loam sands poor in clay, and on a sand loam, and high in the case of highly erodible clay silts, loam sands, and sand loams. The most crust prone soils are not necessarily the most erodible. On most soils, soil‐loss rates do not stabilize until the end of the rainfall experiments. For comparing the interrill erodibilities of the soils, total soil loss is preferred instead of interrill erodibility factors (Ki, Kiq) published in the literature.  相似文献

Soil erosion has serious off-site impacts caused by increased mobilization of sediment and delivery to water bodies causing siltation and pollution. To evaluate factors influencing soil erodibility at a proposed dam site, 21 soil samples collected were characterized. The soils were analyzed for soil organic carbon (SOC), exchangeable bases, exchangeable acidity, pH, electrical conductivities, mean weight diameter and soil particles’ size distribution. Cation exchange capacity, exchangeable sodium percentage, sodium adsorption ratio, dispersion ratio (DR), clay flocculation index (CFI), clay dispersion ratio (CDR) and Ca:Mg ratio were then calculated. Soil erodibility (K-factor) estimates were determined using SOC content and surface soil properties. Soil loss rates by splashing were determined under rainfall simulations at 360?mmh?1 rainfall intensity. Soil loss was correlated to the measured chemical and physical soil properties. There were variations in soil form properties and erodibility indices showing influence on soil loss. The average soil erodibility and SOC values were 0.0734?t?MJ?1?mm?1 and 0.81%, respectively. SOC decreased with depth and soil loss increased with a decrease in SOC content. SOC significantly influenced soil loss, CDR, CFI and DR (P??1. Addition of organic matter stabilize the soils against erosion.  相似文献

Abstract

The investigations aimed to: 1) evaluate water erosion rates on undulating slopes in Lithuania under different land use systems; 2) study changes in soil physical properties on the differently eroded slopes; and 3) better understand relationships between soil physical properties and soil erodibility. Research data were obtained on loamy sand and clay loam Eutric Albeluvisols located on the undulating hilly relief of the ?emai?iai Uplands of Western Lithuania. The results of 18 years of water erosion investigations under different land use systems on slopes of varying steepness are presented. Attention is focused on changes in soil physical properties in relation to soil erosion severity. Measured water erosion rates in the field experiments were: 3.2–8.6 m3 ha?1 yr?1 under winter rye, 9.0–27.1 m3 ha?1 yr?1 under spring barley and 24.2–87.1 m3 ha?1 yr?1 under potatoes. Perennial grasses completely prevented water erosion, while erosion-preventive grass-grain crop rotations (67% grasses, 33% cereal grains) decreased soil losses by 75–80% compared to the field crop rotation, containing 17% tillage crops (potatoes), 33% grasses and 50% cereal grains. The grain-grass crop rotation (33% grasses and 67% cereal grains) decreased soil erosion rates by 23–24%. The percentage of clay-silt and clay fractions of arable soil horizons increased, while the total soil porosity and moisture retention capacity decreased with increased soil erosion. Phytocenoses, including sod-forming perennial grasses and grass-grain crop rotations, led to changes in the physical properties of eroded soils; soil bulk density decreased and percentage total porosity and moisture retention capacity increased. The grass-grain crop rotations increased the water-stable soil structure (measured as water-stable soil aggregates) by 11.03 per cent units and sod-forming perennial grasses increased aggregate stability by 9.86 per cent units compared with the grain-grass crop rotation on the 10–14° slope. Therefore, grass-grain crop rotations and sod-forming perennial grasses decreased soil erodibility and thus could assist both erosion control and the ecological stability of the vulnerable hilly-undulating landscape.  相似文献

Integrating information on nitrogen (N) mineralization potentials into a fertilization plan could lead to improved N use efficiency. A controlled incubation mineralization study examined microbial biomass dynamics and N mineralization rates for two soils receiving 56 and 168 kg N ha?1 in a Panoche clay loam (Typic Haplocambid) and a Wasco sandy loam (Typic Torriorthent), incubated with and without cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) residues at 10 and 25°C for 203 days. Microbial biomass activity determined from mineralized carbon dioxide (CO2) was higher in the sandy loam than in clay loam independent of incubation temperature, cotton residue addition and N treatment. In the absence of added cotton residue, N mineralization rates were higher in the sandy loam. Residue additions increased N immobilization in both soils, but were greater in clay loam. Microbial biomass and mineralization were significantly affected by soil type, residue addition and temperature but not by N level.  相似文献

Changes to soil nutrient availability and increases for crop yield and soil organic C (SOC) concentration on biochar‐amended soil under temperate climate conditions have only been reported in a few publications. The objective of this work was to determine if biochar application rates up to 20 Mg ha?1 affect nutrient availability in soil, SOC stocks and yield of corn (Zea mays L.), soybean (Glycine max L.), and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) on two coarse‐textured soils (loamy sand, sandy clay loam) in S Quebec, Canada. Data were collected from field experiments for a 3‐y period following application of pine wood biochar at rates of 0, 10, and 20 Mg ha?1. For corn plots, at harvest 3 y after biochar application, 20 Mg biochar ha?1 resulted in 41.2% lower soil NH on the loamy sand; the same effect was not present on the sandy clay loam soil. On the loamy sand, 20 Mg biochar ha?1 increased corn yields by 14.2% compared to the control 3 y after application; the same effect was not present on the sandy clay loam soil. Biochar did not alter yield or nutrient availability in soil on soybean or switchgrass plots on either soil type. After 3 y, SOC concentration was 83 and 258% greater after 10 and 20 Mg ha?1 biochar applications, respectively, than the control in sandy clay loam soil under switchgrass production. The same effect was not present on the sandy clay loam soil. A 67% higher SOC concentration was noted with biochar application at 20 Mg ha?1 to sandy clay loam soil under corn.  相似文献

Purpose

Severe soil erosion is caused by wind and water acting separately or in combination or sequentially and is an important factor affecting dryland ecosystems, especially in the severely eroded “water–wind erosion crisscross region” on the Loess Plateau. Thus, the aim of the study was to determine the magnitudes of wind and water erosion under simulative conditions and explore the mechanisms of their interactions.

Materials and methods

We analyzed the interaction between these two types of erosion by exposing a sandy loessial soil with an artificial rill to simulated wind at four speeds (0, 1, 8, and 15 m s?1) and then to simulated rainfall, measuring runoff, sediment yield, and characterizing changes in rill morphology. This simulated the transition period between the dry (windy) and wet seasons.

Results and discussion

The time to runoff initiation depended on both wind speed and rainfall intensity, but rainfall had a larger impact on runoff. At the 15 m s?1 wind speed, the total runoff significantly (P?<?0.05) increased by 33.3 kg when the rainfall intensity was increased to 120 from 60 mm h?1. Under the 120 mm h?1 rainfall intensity, the total sediment yields increased significantly (P?<?0.05) with increasing wind speed. Erosion sediment yields increased by 9.7, 16.3, and 70.4 % with increasing wind speed under all three rainfall intensities when compared with a no wind case. Changes in rill morphology caused by wind erosion were a factor that affected the erosion processes of subsequent rainstorms.

Conclusions

Our results provide a basis for hypothesizing trends of wind and water erosion, highlight the importance of wind and water erosion acting in conjunction in semi-arid ecosystems, and are conducive for developing a more integrated perspective of wind–water dynamics on the Loess Plateau.

Determining potassium (K) fertilizer requirement using sorption isotherms is considered more accurate than conventional soil K tests. A total of 59 surface soil samples were used to establish K exchange isotherm. To evaluate K requirement sorption test, a glasshouse experiment using perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne, cv. Roper) was carried out on 10 soil samples. The experiment was laid out as a completely randomized design with four replications and four K levels (K0, K20, K40, K80). Concentrations of K in solution established by adding K in the pots estimated from the sorption curve ranged from 20 to 80 mg K l?1 including check treatment (no K). Dry matter yield of ryegrass in most soils approached maximum as adjusted K levels were increased to 20 mg K l?1. The amounts of K required to bring the soils to 20 mg l?1 in soil solution varied among soils and ranged from 99 to 399 mg kg?1, on average 205 mg kg?1 soil. It was found that a useful regression model for the prediction of standard K requirement (K20) included the combination of plant available K extracted by NH4OAc (Av-K) and clay content: K20 = ?41 ? 0.63 Av-K + 9.0 Clay (R2 = 0.61, p < 0.001, n = 59).  相似文献

Soil organic C (SOC) in agricultural soils is affected by cropping system. In order to compare the impact of ley-dominated and cereal monoculture rotations on soil properties, a series of experiments was started in Sweden in the early 1980s. This study quantified the effect of rotations and N fertilisation on SOC stocks and microbial community composition. After 35 years, soil samples taken down to 50-cm depth at two sites with contrasting soil texture (clay and loam) were analysed for soil C and N, bulk density and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) content. Significant increases in SOC concentrations and stocks were found in the ley-dominated rotation compared with the cereal monoculture rotation, the difference being 0.36 and 0.59 Mg C ha?1 year?1 in the topsoil (0–20 cm) for sites with the clay and loam texture, respectively, in average over N fertiliser levels. Nitrogen fertilisation increased SOC stocks significantly in the cereal monoculture, but not in the ley-dominated rotation. In the loam, SOC responses in the subsoil were almost as high as those in the topsoil, but they were insignificant in the clay soil. These results indicate that soil texture and structure can have a great impact on the potential of subsoils to sequester C, which requires attention when scaling up SOC sequestration rates for regional or global assessments.  相似文献

Although root crops are widely cultivated in Iran, little is known about soil loss due to crop harvesting (SLCH). We assessed the annual exported soil, soil organic matter (SOM) and nutrients from 47 farms under root crops in southwestern Iran. Soil losses for garlic, potato, sugar beet, radish and beetroot were estimated as 6.27, 2.52, 2.26, 4.10 and 6.95, Mg ha?1, respectively, which on average was of the order of soil losses by water erosion in the watershed basins of Iran. Total N, P2O5 and K2O losses were estimated as 36.61, 1.10 and 31.50 kg ha?1 and their costs as 18.24, 0.74 and 19.93 USAlthough root crops are widely cultivated in Iran, little is known about soil loss due to crop harvesting (SLCH). Correlation analysis showed no significant relationship between soil properties and SLCH (except soil moisture content for radish and clay content for beetroot). The findings indicated that the exported soil, SOM and nutrients were at such levels that SLCH should be considered in soil erosion studies.  相似文献

Calibration of crop responses to applied silicon (Si) serves as a basis for developing Si fertilizer recommendation guidelines. A greenhouse experiment was set up in a randomized complete block design with five replications, two sources of Si (wollastonite and slag) and four Si rates (0, 170, 340 and 680 kg ha?1) to calibrate plant-available Si for growing rice in Louisiana soils. Silicon concentrations were determined in soils using seven different extraction procedures. Based on a quadratic model (p < 0.05), the estimated soil Si critical level using 0.01 M calcium chloride (CaCl2) for Sharkey clay soil was 110 mg kg?1 while for Crowley silt loam and Commerce silt loam, levels were 37 and 43 mg kg?1, respectively. These results suggest that suitability of an extractant that gives the best estimate of plant-available Si could considerably depend on soil type and it is unlikely that there is a universal extractant for all soils.  相似文献

In this study, impact of silicon (Si) application on wheat performance under drought stress is studied. Experimental soil was sandy clay loam with an average pH of 8.01, electrical conductivity (EC) of 2.36 dSm?1, and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) content of 2.16%. Soil was severely deficient in organic matter (<1%). Average extractable phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) concentration was 230 and 5.21 mg kg?1, respectively. Silicon potassium metasilicate (K2SiO3) was applied at the rate of 0 and 12 kg/ha with three canal water irrigation frequencies including two, three, and four under randomized complete block design (RCBD) factorial fashion with three replications. Results indicated that drought stress significantly reduced plant height, spike length, shoot fresh weight, and number of spikelets/spike, eventually enhancing wheat yield. Concentration of K+ in shoot (28.65 mg g?1) and grains (3.51 mg g?1) increased with Si application, which helped to maintain water potential in plant even under reduced moisture level in plants and soil, ultimately producing more yield and biomass under drought stress conditions.  相似文献

Irrigation with low-quality water may change soil hydraulic properties due to excessive electrical conductivity (ECw) and sodium adsorption ratio (SARw). Field experiments were conducted to determine the effects of water quality (ECw of 0.5–20 dS m?1 and SARw of 0.5–40 mol0.5 l?0.5) on the hydraulic properties of a sandy clay loam soil (containing ~421 g gravel kg?1 soil) at applied tensions of 0–0.2 m. The mean unsaturated hydraulic conductivity [K(ψ)], sorptive number (α) and sorptivity coefficient (S) varied with change in ECw and SARw as quadratic or power equations, whereas macroscopic capillary length, λ, varied as quadratic or logarithmic equations. The maximum value of K(ψ) was obtained with a ECw/SARw of 10 dS m?1/20 mol0.5 l?0.5 at tensions of 0.2 and 0.15 m, and with 10 dS m?1/10 mol0.5 l?0.5 at other tensions. Changes in K(ψ) due to the application of ECw and SARw decreased as applied tension increased. Analysis indicated that 13.7 and 86.3% of water flow corresponded to soil pore diameters <1.5 and >1.5 μm, respectively, confirming that macropores are dominant in the studied soil. The findings indicated that use of saline waters with an EC of <10 dS m?1 can improve soil hydraulic properties in such soils. Irrigation waters with SARw < 20 mol0.5 l?0.5 may not adversely affect hydraulic attributes at early time; although higher SARw may negatively affect them.  相似文献

Little information is available regarding the effect of sewage sludge biochar on soil properties and crop yield. Thus, our objective was to evaluate the effect of sewage sludge (S) and its biochar (B) on maize shoot yield, nutrients and heavy metals uptake in two calcareous soils. The amendments were applied at the rates of 0, 10, 20 and 40 Mg ha?1. Moreover, NK treatment was included to compare the effects of S and B with conventional fertilization. At harvest time, plant shoots and soil samples were collected for yield, nutrients uptake and chemical analyses. The highest shoot dry matter was obtained in the S treatment. The B application in the clay loam and loam soils resulted in 5.2% increment and 17.7% decrement of shoot dry matter relative to the control, respectively. Shoot dry matter in the NK treatment was significantly higher than in the control. B application decreased Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu and Pb uptake by maize shoot. DTPA-extractable Pb in B-amended soils was lower than in control, while an inverse trend was obtained for available Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu. Biochar application at the rate of 7.3 Mg ha?1 might be suggested for maize cultivation in clay loam soils.  相似文献
