Until recent years, relatively little attention has been given to beef cattle transportation management and research in the United States As oulined in this article, it is clear that there are significant physiologic changes occurring in cattle as a result of transport and handling. These physiologic changes encompass, among others, effects on immune system function, disease incidence, and carcass quality. Significant advancements have been made during the past decade in the use of appropriate cattle-handling techniques, facility design,and research promoting our understanding and the attenuation of transport stress. Many issues surrounding livestock transport, such as temperature and ventilation during transit, use of rest stops, pretransit feeding regimens, and incidence of disease transmission via transport vehicles, need further research to enable continued provision of science-based recommendations to the livestock and transportation industries.  相似文献

Stocker operations differ significantly in management techniques and health programs. Critical control points should be identified for each farm and used to ascertain the biggest areas for potential improvement so as to allow proper allocation of resources. A customized wellness program couples medicine and management to minimize the negative impact of disease. A complete program involves animal selection, disease prevention, and management. Calves should be evaluated and classified into appropriate risk categories regarding treatment, management, and performance expectations. Disease prevention strategies should involve increasing immune responses while decreasing pathogen exposure and stress in cattle. Osteochondrosis is a poorly understood condition that affects many species, including cattle. Its incidence is not fully appreciated in the cattle industry for many reasons. Most of the reports show a male, purebred predilection, but this may simply be a result of the typical population for which medical attention is sought. With the increasing value of female breeding stock, a less skewed distribution of the disease will most likely result. Distribution of lesions is similar to that in the horse, with the stifle and tarsus most commonly affected. Treatment is divided into medical and surgical options, but neither seem to be strikingly effective as of yet. Surgical techniques include arthroscopy and arthrotomy, and both have their complicating factors. How osteochondrosis as a disease will affect the cattle industry is still to be decided. If the incidence rate does increase with more animals being valued for their economic potential, then treatment options will surely be reevaluated and refined.  相似文献

Depressed feed intake is the major nutritional problem in newly received feeder cattle. This article draws on findings from receiving experiments to offer recommendations on common matters of debate. These include the initial use of feed versus water; appropriate types of feed; the dietary roles of concentrate, protein, and other nutrients; the use of medication; and strategies for lactic acid adaptation and prevention of acidosis.  相似文献

Six trials in Queensland compared the bruising of 960 cattle with untipped, tipped and no horns. In three of the trials the treatment groups were kept separate during transit to the abattoir. In the other trials all cattle were handled as the one group. Tipped and untipped cattle had similar bruising, whether sent for slaughter as separate groups or together. Thus tipping was ineffective in preventing bruising. Hornless cattle had significantly (P less than 0.05) less bruising than horned cattle when consigned as separate groups. However, this advantage was lost when hornless cattle were mixed with tipped or untipped animals.  相似文献

The adequacy of current supplemental dietary selenium allowances for dairy cattle has been reviewed from the literature and by monitoring responses of dairy herds in a veterinary practice specializing in nutritional consultation. Both information sources tend to agree that a reference range of 70 to 100 ng of Se/mL of serum is an acceptable target concentration. This range can be attained most often by providing > 6 mg of supplemental Se.animal-1.d-1, but several factors affect the serum Se responses of different cows to specific Se intakes. These factors may include forage types and sources, ruminal environment, supplemental fat, dietary calcium, trace metals, and genetics. The major benefits, observed experimentally, of maintaining optimal Se intakes include minimizing the incidence of mastitis and preventing calf losses associated with myopathy and(or) respiratory disease.  相似文献

Hyperbilirubinemia was present in 387 out of 1279 sick cattle admitted to the clinic of the Ontario Veterinary College. One hundred and ninety five of these had a total serum bilirubin of 17 mumol/L or greater. Clinical records, laboratory data and when available, pathology reports from these 195 animals were examined in an attempt to explain the reason for the high bilirubin levels. The hyperbilirubinemia in 187 of these was mainly due to an increase in unconjugated bilirubin. Jaundice, liver disease or anemia was not a feature and alkaline phosphatase was not elevated. The 195 animals with hyperbilirubinemia suffered from a variety of diseases that seemingly were unrelated to the increased bilirubin. The most frequently described signs were anorexia and rumen stasis. Liver disease was diagnosed in eight animals and in these clinical jaundice, and increased conjugated bilirubin and alkaline phosphatase was a feature. It was concluded that hyperbilirubinemia occurred in many diseases of cattle and in most instances was related to a failure of the liver to remove unconjugated bilirubin from the serum rather than to a failure of the liver to excrete conjugated bilirubin.  相似文献

Polioencephalomalacia developed in 27 of 225 cattle grazing on 486 hectares of dry, short, grama grass pasture. Chemicals in drinking water, toxin from nitrate-utilizing ruminal bacteria, and documented poisonous plants were considered as etiologic agents. Attempts to reproduce the disease by injecting mice and dosing sheep with broth filtrate from nitrate-utilizing ruminal bacteria were not successful. Mushrooms collected from the pasture and fed to a cow did not reproduce the disease.  相似文献
