Filtration rate and ingestion rate of different stages of Paphia malabarica larvae (D‐shape, (80 μm), Umbo (120 μm) and veliger (180 μm)) were determined in relation to feeding on various micro algae. The micro algae tested were Nannochloropsis salina, Isochrysis aff. galbana, Dicrateria inornata, Tetraselmis gracilis and Chaetoceros calcitrans at 5 or 10 × 103 cells mL?1. Both filtration and ingestion rate of micro algae tested were increased with increasing larval size; however, at all larval stages, Ccalcitrans resulted in lower filtration and ingestion rate. Of the algal diets tested, Pmalabarica larvae showed greatest filtration rate and ingestion rate with Nsalina. Maximum filtration rate for Nsalina was 15.7, 26.3 and 33.9 μL h?1 and highest ingest rate was 15, 92 and 177 cells larva?1 h?1 in D shape larvae, umbo and pediveliger, respectively. Filtration rate and ingestion rate of Nsalina were always higher than those other algal species tested because of its small cell size (2 μm).  相似文献

Development and design of adequate feeding protocols on sea cucumber larvae are necessary for improvements on larvae growth, survival and production of competent juveniles. This work assessed the Holothuria arguinensis larvae growth and survival, fed with three different single microalgae diets of Chaetoceros calcitrans, Isochrysis galbana and Tetraselmis chui, and two microalgae diets based on a combination of C. calcitrans and T. chuii (C:T; 1:1) and C. calcitrans, T. chuii and I. galbana (C:T:I; 1:1:1) during 2 months. Holothuria arguinensis larvae fed with T:C:I, showed higher survival and larger larval and stomach sizes than the ones fed with the other diets. Comparing the results obtained from the single diets, H. arguinensis larvae fed with I. galbana grew and survived better during the first 5 days. However, higher growth was obtained on the larvae fed with C. calcitrans from day 5 to day 12; since this day, larvae fed with T. chuii showed the largest size. These results could be related to the different microalgae size and morphology, in addition to the nutritional value of the different microalgae used. However, no competent larvae that metamorphosed into doliolaria were obtained during this experiment. The tanks used were transparent, which could be causing light stress to the larvae, since competent larvae were obtained in opaque production tanks in our aquaculture installations during the same time period. The combined diet of C. calcitrans, T. chuii and I. galbana (C:T:I) could improve the growth and larvae competency of H. arguinensis.  相似文献

Problems of limited number of dry feeds as supplement or replacement of live feeds have led to poor larval nutrition in many species of fish. Therefore, the suitability of co‐feeding 8‐day‐old African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) posthatch larvae using live feed (Artemia salina) and formulated dry diet containing freshwater atyid shrimp (Caridina nilotica) during weaning was investigated. The experiment ended after 21 days of culture and respective groups compared on the basis of growth performance, survival, feed utilization and nutrient utilization. Larvae co‐fed using 50%Artemia and 50% formulated dry diet resulted in significantly (P < 0.05) better growth performance, food gain ratio (FGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER) and productive protein values (PPV) than other treatments. The lowest growth performance occurred in larvae weaned using 100% formulated and commercial dry diets. Better survival of over 90% was obtained in larvae weaned using 50%Artemia and 50% dry diet, while abrupt weaning using 100% dry diets resulted in lower survival (<75%). These results support a recommendation of co‐feeding C. gariepinus larvae using a formulated dry diet containing C. nilotica and 50% live feed when weaning is performed after 8 days posthatching period.  相似文献

Four species of microalgae (Thalassiosira weissflogii, Thalassiosira pseudonana, Nannochloropsis sp. and an unidentified species) were isolated from natural seawater of East China Sea. By studying the effect on growth and survival rates of two sizes of postset juveniles of razor clam, Sinonovacula constricta (Lamarck, 1818) (shell length 0.37 ± 0.05 mm and 1.07 ± 0.08 mm, respectively), the food value of these microalgae and four other commonly used microalgal species in China (Chaetoceros calcitrans, Isochrysis galbana, Platymonas subcordiformis and Nannochloropsis oculata) in single and two algal species diets were evaluated and compared. For smaller juvenile, when used as a monospecies diet, C. calcitrans and I. galbana supported the greatest shell growth and the highest survival rate, and P. subcordiformis, N. oculata and T. weissflogii produced the smallest shell growth and the lowest survival rate. Meanwhile, for the larger juvenile, single‐species algal diet had the greatest and weakest food value on T. weissflogii and N. oculata, respectively. Full‐mixed algal diets exhibited the strongest food value and most of the two species diets supported more food value than corresponding individual single microalgae diet. Moreover, shell growths and the survival rates of larger juvenile fed most of the two species diets were lower than fed single species of T. weissflogii.  相似文献

Laboratory spawned one week old veliger larvaeof the tehuelche scallop, Aequipectentehuelchus (D'Orb., 1846), were reared topedivelger stage under three different dietaryregimes in order to determine the best algalcombination under standard hatchery conditions.Veligers were cultured at mean densities of 2.7larvae/ml. Larval growth and survival wereassessed on larvae fed the following dietarytreatments: (1) Isochrysis galbana(T-Iso)+ Chaetoceros calcitrans, (2)Pavlova lutheri + C calcitrans, and (3)P. lutheri + I. galbana T-Iso +Ch. calcitrans. The highest growth rateswere detected on larvae fed diets includingP. lutheri.  相似文献

Clearance rate (CR) and ingestion rate (IR) of different sizes (89, 125 and 188 μm shell length) of Pinctada margaritifera larvae were determined when feeding on various microalgae. The microalgae tested were the diatoms, Chaetoceros muelleri and C. simplex, and flagellates, Tahitian Isochrysis aff. galbana, Pavlova lutheri and P. salina at 5 or 10 cells μL–1. Both CR and IR of microalgae tested in this study increased with increasing larval size; but at all larval sizes, diatoms resulted in lower CR and IR. Of the microalgae tested, P. margaritifera larvae showed greatest CR and IR with the two Pavlova spp. Maximum CR for P. salina was 10.5, 21.2 and 29.7 μL h–1 for larvae with shell lengths of 89, 125 and 188 μm, respectively. The highest IR values for P. margaritifera larvae with shell lengths of 89, 125 and 188 μm were 8.7, 81.0 and 165.7 cells·larva–1 h–1, respectively. CR and IR of P. salina were approximately five times higher than those recorded for C. muelleri and C. simplex.  相似文献

The main objective of this study was to identify algal diets that maximize the survival and growth and alter the biochemical content of Pecten maximus larvae with the aim of improving metamorphosis. We also evaluated the potential of the cryptophyceae Rhodomonas salina as a food source for these larvae. Two flagellates, Isochrysis aff. galbana (T) and Pavlova lutheri (P), and two diatoms, Chaetoceros gracilis (C) or Skeletonema costatum (S), were tested as two ternary diets, namely PTC and PTS. PTC and PTS were compared with diets that also included R. salina (R). The addition of R. salina and the replacement of C. gracilis by S. costatum in the traditional hatchery diet seem to be two interesting alternatives for increasing the productivity of larval scallop culture and improving the metamorphosis rate. With these two diets, larval growth increased and metamorphosis was observed to occur more rapidly. Moreover, our results showed that the addition of R. salina significantly improved the overall condition of the larvae by promoting an increase in organic matter and total lipids. This accumulation of lipids during ontogeny seems to promote larvae to grow and to complete metamorphosis more rapidly than with the other diets. The level of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the algae could also at least partially explain the results obtained, since the PUFA level of C. gracilis was about half those of S. costatum and R. salina.  相似文献

This study assessed the nutritional value of four species of microalgae for larval sandfish, Holothuria scabra (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea). Two‐day‐old larvae were fed either a single diatom (Chaetoceros muelleri, Chaetoceros calcitrans), flagellate (Isochrysis aff. galbana (T‐ISO), Pavlova salina), or a ternary microalgal diet (TMD) comprised of 40% C. muelleri, 40% T‐ISO, and 20% P. salina for 12 d. On Days 4, 6, and 8 length of larvae fed either C. muelleri, C. calcitrans, or the TMD was significantly greater than in T‐ISO and P. salina fed larvae as well as the unfed control larvae. T‐ISO fed larvae had a significantly greater length compared to unfed larvae on Days 4, 6, and 8; however, larvae fed P. salina had a significantly greater length compared to unfed larvae on Days 6 and 8 only. Survival of larvae fed either C. muelleri or the TMD was significantly better than the flagellate fed and unfed larvae on Days 4, 8, and 12. There was no significant difference between survival of unfed larvae and larvae fed either T‐ISO or P. salina during the 12‐d larval culture period. On Day 12, larvae fed either a diatom or the TMD developed in excess of 84% competent doliolariae. Larvae fed C. muelleri had a significantly higher percentage competent doliolariae than larvae from all other treatments except the TMD. Neither larvae fed either T‐ISO or P. salina nor unfed larvae developed any competent doliolariae. In conclusion, this study showed C. muelleri to be the most effective of the four microalgae tested as a single microalgal diet for larval H. scabra and, as such, C. muelleri will be used as a reference diet in future studies.  相似文献

The purple-hinge rock scallop is receiving increasing interest as a candidate for commercial mariculture. Hatchery culture of juveniles is prerequisite since natural recruitment of juveniles is variable and not dependable as a source of stock. Success in carrying larvae through metamorphosis has been limited. Critical to larval culture is a sound understanding of optimal food and feeding strategies. Growth and survival were examined in early larvae fed six algal diets at four separate concentrations. The data clearly illustrate the superiority of both Isochrysis galbana and a Tahitian (T) strain of Isochrysis. Feed concentrations of 1 × 105 cells/ml were found to be optimal for these species of Isochrysis. An I. galbana diet supported 80% survival through metamorphosis. The other algae examined included Mono-chrysis lutheri, Rhodomonas sp., Carteria pallida, and a 1:1:1 mixture of Rhodomonas, Monochrysis, and Isochrysis. All these diets supported 5–6% survival, and the growth was only slightly better than starvation controls. A similar study was done with early juveniles (1 mm dia). The diets included: I. galbana, M. lutheri, Thalassiosira pseudonana (3H), T-Isochrysis sp., and Phaedactylum tricornutum. As with the larvae, superior growth and survival occurred with diets of both species of Isochrysis. Cell concentrations between 1 × 105 and 2 × 105 cells/ml were optimal. The other diets supported minimal growth. In the feeding runs of both larvae and early juveniles, cell densities in excess of 5 × 105 cells/ml were detrimental.  相似文献

We investigated the ingestion, fecundity and population growth of Harpacticus sp. fed on monodiet or mixed diets to evaluate the effects of different algae on Harpacticus sp. Harpacticus sp. fed on diatoms (Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros curvisetus) had higher ingestion and pellet production. Time to attain 100% in proportions of gravid females differed, with quickest to slowest: S. costatum, C. curvisetus, Gymnodinium sp. and Heterosigma akashiwo, with the exception of Prymnesium parvum (≤16.67%). S. costatum or C. curvisetus produced higher populations than the other three diets, supported complete development to adulthood, and resulted in doubling copepod population within four days, while no population growth occurred for the other three diets. Mixed‐diet experiments showed that egg production and gross growth efficiencies reduced significantly when fed on H. akashiwo, Gymnodinium sp. or P. parvum mixed with Isochrysis galbana, in comparison with 100% I. galbana. Thus, S. costatum and C. curvisetus were beneficial foods while the other three diets were potentially toxic for Harpacticus sp. The data in this article provide further recognition of nutrient deficiency or toxicity of different algae on copepods.  相似文献

The southern Australian whelk, Dicathais orbita, is a potential candidate for aquaculture, as both seafood and for bioactive compound production. Larval rearing experiments to determine the effects of temperature and diet on the growth and survival of D. orbita larvae under laboratory conditions comprised five different unicellular algal diets of two brown algal species; Isochysis galbana and Chaetoceros muelleri, two green algae; Tetraselmis seucica and Nannochloropsis oculata, and a mixture of all four strains for larvae maintained at 16 and 22°C. Absolute growth, specific growth rate (SGR) and survival were determined regularly. Larvae reared at 22°C on a mixed diet, or brown algae, performed significantly better than those reared on green algal diets alone. Preliminary trials with settlement cues were undertaken on different aged larvae to determine when larvae become competent. An array of natural cues (carrion, Xenostrobus pulex, adult mucus and Ulvella lens), as well as concentrations of KCl was tested. KCl(concentration of 20 mM) induced the greatest settlement, however, no larvae metamorphosed under the conditions provided. This study confirms long‐lived planktotrophic larval development for Dicathais orbita with higher development rates at the higher water temperatures. Further studies will optimize culture conditions and cues for settlement and metamorphosis.  相似文献

Several experiments were performed examining the effect of different culture variables on the growth and survival of Argopecten nucleus and Nodipecten nodosus larvae. Higher growth and survival values were obtained at a low density (1 larvae mL?1) than at a high density (5 larvae mL?1), except for N. nodosus's survival, which was not affected by density. Higher growth was obtained when feeding the larvae a diet of Isochrysis galbana, similar results occurred with the diet of Isochrysis galbana+Chaetoceros calcitrans in A. nucleus and with I. galbana combined with the lipid emulsion EmDHA in N. nodosus. Higher survival was obtained when the diet included a mixture of microalgae than when EmDHA was supplemented. Growth and survival of the larvae of A. nucleus were greater when fed continuously, while N. nodosus grew and survived better when food was given discontinuously. Higher growth and survival values were recorded at lower food concentrations ranging from 20 to 40 cells μL?1 of I. galbana. Higher growth was observed with increasing temperature between 22 and 28 °C, although there was a simultaneous decrease in survival. No significant effects on larval production parameters were found when the culture water was changed totally or partially, but higher larval growth of N. nodosus was verified when a partial renewal of water was performed.

Three Pavlova species were evaluated for their nutritional value as diets for growth and survival of the Cortez oyster Crassostrea corteziensis spat during late‐nursery cultivation at a hatchery. Microalgae were provided as monospecific diets (Pavlova salina, P. sp. C50 and P. sp. C53) and in binary combinations of diets 1+2, 1+3 and 2+3 at 80–90 × 103 cells mL?1 for 21 days. Juveniles experienced high survival rates and grew well with all dietary treatments, but binary diets yielded greater survival and growth of spat. From the three binary treatments, Diet 6 (P. sp. C50 and P. sp. C53) promoted significantly (P<0.001) fastest growth of juveniles in shell height (0.19 mm day?1), shell length (0.14 mm day?1), total wet weight (0.04 g day?1) and dry weight of meat biomass (0.024 g day?1). For all shell dimensions, the lowest growth rates occurred with Diets 2 (P. sp. C56 alone) and 3 (P. sp. C50 alone). These results highlight the importance of testing microalgal diets for bivalve spat rather than just relying on published nutritional values.  相似文献

Choosing the right algae with the relevant properties and optimal harvest time for specific culture conditions and products is essential. As such, biomass, biochemical composition and fatty acid (FA) profile at different growth stages of locally isolated strains, suitable for aquaculture, Chlorella salina and Isochrysis maritima, were determined. Biomass and moisture content of both species were affected by the growth phase. A particular accumulation trend of proximate biochemical compounds was observed in these two strains. Protein content decreased whereby, as culture aged, more carbohydrate and lipid accumulated in C. salina and I. maritima, respectively. Variations in FA profile were exhibited in C. salina where PUFA was the highest, followed by SFA and MUFA throughout the growth phases. I. maritima had the highest SFA content, followed by PUFA and MUFA during the exponential phase. The essential PUFAs in C. salina were linoleic acid (LA) and α-linolenic acid (ALA) with a low occurrence of γ-linolenic acid (GLA; 0.49–0.78%) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 0.21–0.45%). I. maritima recorded relatively high ALA (4.73–6.71%), GLA (5.05–7.80%) and DHA (5.15–7.02%) with minor presence of arachidonic acid (ARA; 0.45–0.59%) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 0.43–0.58%). Both C. salina and I. maritima are suitable for aquaculture feeds, but I. maritima was more superior by having EPA and higher DHA in their cells. Harvesting regime at a specific phase must be taken into account to achieve maximum yields of a target compound; thus, for feeding purpose, harvesting both strains at stationary phase is recommended as better PUFA compositions were obtained.

The results of the study on the suitable algal feed for the mass rearing of holothurian larvae through hatchery system are presented. Auricularia larvae, after 48 h of fertilization, obtained from induced spawning of Holothuria spinifera, were fed with different algae Isochrysis galbana, Nanochloropsis salina, Pavlova lutheri, Tetraselmis chuii and Chaetoceros calcitrans as well as I. galbana+C. calcitrans to ascertain the effect of single and combined microalgal diet. The rate of feeding was 2 × 104 cells larvae–1 day–1 for a period of 9–12 days. The growth rate of 59 μm day−1 with 90% and 43 μm day−1 with 100% occurrence of late auricularia in the larvae fed with C. calcitrans alone and I. galbana+C. calcitrans, respectively, indicated that C.calcitrans itself or in combination with I. galbana is the effective feed for the larvae of H. spinifera.  相似文献

Rotifers and Artemia salina nauplii are the most widely used live prey for newly hatched larvae, but they do not always promote optimal survival and growth. Alternative food sources such as copepods, which bypass these inadequacies and promote adequate growth, are needed and they are viewed with considerable interest by the scientific community. The aim of the present study was to test two different diets [rotifers and A. salina nauplii (group A) and a mixture (group B) of rotifers/Tisbe spp. copepods and A. salina nauplii/copepods] during the larval rearing of the striped blenny Meiacanthus grammistes. The analysis of the survival rate, size (total length and wet weight) and metamorphosis time during the larval phase of this species showed that Tisbe spp. administration can significantly improve larval survival and growth and also reduce the metamorphosis time. The results obtained are related to the fatty acid content of the live prey used and are essential in order to improve the captive production of M. grammistes through a closed system and, in turn, to preserve natural stocks.  相似文献

The influence of algal diet on survival, growth and development of hatchery reared flat oyster, Ostrea angasi, larvae was investigated in a series of uni, binary and ternary algal diet trials. Early stage larvae (140–230 μm shell length) generally grew faster than late‐stage larvae (230–340 μm shell length) when fed unialgal diets. Of the 24 algal diets evaluated, larvae fed unialgal diets of Isochrysis sp. (T. Iso), Nannochloropsis oculata, Tetraselmis chuii or Pavlova lutheri; a binary diet of T. chuii+T. Iso; or ternary diets of T. chuii+T. Iso combined with P. lutheri or N. oculata had the greatest larval growth, survival, development and metamorphosis, in the respective trials. The correlation between growth rate and spat produced in late‐stage larvae was stronger when fed unialgal diets (= 0.75) than when larvae were fed either binary or ternary diets (= 0.44 and = 0.45 respectively). Marked differences in proportion of spat produced (24 h post metamorphosis) were evident among diets producing similar growth rates. For hatchery production of O. angasi larvae, ternary diets of T. chuii+T. Iso combined with either P. lutheri or N. oculata were the best diets to maximize larval growth rate, development and survival 24 h post metamorphosis.  相似文献

Experiments on the live food requirements of cultured turbot larvae are described. A mixture of six species of unicellular algae did not sustain early larvae, but the growth and survival of larvae fed with rotifers were considerably improved when the rotifers were feeding on Isochrysis galbana rather than on Dunaliella tertiolecta. Oyster (Crassostrea gigas) larvae offered alone or with rotifers, did not produce higher larval growth or survival than rotifers alone. Black tanks were found to be more suitable than white tanks for rearing larval turbot.  相似文献
