Severe hypoxia during birth results in a metabolic acidosis and depressed heat production capacity. The aetiology of the depressed heat production capacity is unknown. To investigate this problem newborn lambs were exposed to a 30 minute period of hypoxia by causing them to breathe room air diluted with nitrogen. Heat production capacity was subsequently estimated as summit metabolic rate. When summit metabolic rate was estimated at the end of the period of hypoxia a depression to 66 per cent of the control value was observed (P less than 0.01) but no depression was observed when the estimation of summit metabolic rate was delayed for 30 minutes. Hypoxia resulted in metabolic acidosis, hyperlactaemia and considerable increases in the plasma concentrations of adrenaline and noradrenaline. Summit metabolic rate was positively correlated with blood pH at the beginning of summit metabolism in lambs which had a pH value of less than 7.05. There were no other relationships between summit metabolic rate and blood composition. These results suggest that the poor heat production capacity found in lambs which have suffered hypoxia during birth may be directly related to acidaemia.  相似文献

Eight physiological and vitality variables related to the first minutes of the life of Iberian x Meishan F2 piglets were analyzed. Variables included rectal temperature, arterial oxygen saturation, heart rate (all were monitored at birth and 60 min later), time to reach the udder, and time to the first colostrum intake. Litter effect within boar, a random source of variation, influenced all variables, whereas the random boar effect was not significant for heart rate and arterial oxygen saturation at birth and the time to reach the udder. Birth weight influenced rectal temperature at birth (P < 0.01) and 60 min later (P < 0.001), arterial oxygen saturation 1 h after birth (P < 0.05), heart rate 1 h after birth (P < 0.001), time to reach the udder (P < 0.05), and time to the first suckle (P < 0.01), whereas viability score influenced rectal temperatures (at birth and 60 min later; P < 0.001), and time to reach the udder (P < 0.001) and to suckle (P < 0.001). Finally, the order of birth showed significant effects for rectal temperature 1 h after birth (P < 0.001) and time to first colostrum intake (P < 0.001). Correlation coefficients between physiological variables were generally low, with the exception of the ones for rectal temperature 1 h after birth and arterial oxygen saturation 1 h after birth (0.38; P < 0.001), and for rectal temperature at birth and rectal temperature 1 h after birth (0.34; P < 0.001). Times to reach the udder and to suckle were highly correlated (0.67; P < 0.001) and also were moderately and negatively correlated with rectal temperature 1 h after birth (-0.36 and -0.38 respectively; P < 0.001). Heart rates at birth and 1 h later, as well as arterial oxygen saturation at birth and 1 h later, were not correlated, showing that the values at birth do not necessarily provide information about the physiological status of the pig 1 h after birth. The recording of physiological variables, birth weight, and viability score may be useful to identify weak piglets quickly and to establish palliative measures.  相似文献

Fetal and maternal blood gas tensions, pH, packed cell volume and glucose, fructose and lactic acid concentrations were monitored during the last two days of gestation, during parturition and and the first hour after birth. Blood samples were taken by means of indwelling catheters (implanted seven to 14 days before parturition) from 12 fetuses in seven sows. All fetuses were liveborn at a mean gestational age of 113.1 days. The significant finding was that all variables in fetal blood were stable during labour and, although mild hypercapnia was present during the last three hours, no significant changes in mean values were seen until those of samples taken within 15 minutes of birth. In some fetuses, no changes were seen until after birth, while in others pH and pO2 values declined during the last hour of fetal life. Immediately after birth a rapid increase in pO2 and decrease in pCO2 followed the onset of respiration. Blood pH fell during the first 30 minutes after birth and this fall was accompanied by increasing blood lactic acid concentrations. Blood glucose concentrations rose rapidly in the first 15 minutes after birth and were maintained during the first hour despite separation of the piglets from the sow. There was a transient, but significant, increase in packed cell volume during the period from 15 minutes before to 15 minutes after birth. Maternal values for all variables measured remained virtually unchanged during delivery.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of body positioning immediately after delivery on respiratory and metabolic adaptation to extra-uterine life in newborn calves. One hundred and one Belgian White and Blue calves were delivered at term by an elective caesarean section and were assigned into three categories according to the body position imposed immediately after umbilical cord rupture: 71 calves were placed in lateral recumbency; 16 calves were placed in sternal recumbency and 14 calves were suspended by the hind legs for less than 90 seconds (75 +/- 5 s). Following this initial body position, the calves were allowed to move without restraint. They were examined at birth, 5, 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes, and 2, 3, 6, 12 and 24 hours after birth by the following measurements: physical examination, heart rate, arterial blood gas analysis, pulmonary function tests using the esophageal balloon catheter technique, arterial and venous blood acid-base balance analysis, rectal temperature, jugular venous blood sampling for the determination of blood glucose, plasma lactate and serum cortisol concentrations, haematologic variables and passive immune transfer variables. Body positioning immediately after delivery clearly influenced respiratory and metabolic adaptation to extra-uterine life in term calves delivered by an elective caesarean section. Systematic sternal recumbency and suspension by the hind legs for less than 90 seconds immediately after umbilical cord rupture had a positive functional impact on postnatal pulmonary mechanics and gas exchange and on postnatal correction of mixed acidosis present at birth, contributing in turn to an enhanced passive immune transfer. These two body positions should be encouraged to improve adaptation at birth in healthy term calves delivered by an elective caesarean section. Evaluation of possible side-effects is required before application in severely asphyxiated calves.  相似文献

Metabolic heat production and rectal temperature were measured in 19 newborn calves (41.8 +/- 3.7 kg) during hypothermia and recovery when four different means of assistance were provided. Hypothermia of 30 degrees C rectal temperature was induced by immersion in 18 degrees C water. Calves were rewarmed in a 20 to 25 degree C air environment where thermal assistance was provided by added thermal insulation or by supplemental heat from infrared lamps. Other calves were rewarmed by immersion in warm water (38 degrees C), with or without a 40-ml drench of 20% ethanol in water. Resting (prehypothermia) and cold-induced summit metabolism of the calves was 2.5 +/- .1 and 8.2 +/- .22 W/kg and occurred at rectal temperatures of 39.5 +/- .06 and 36.2 +/- .26 degrees C, respectively. During cooling, metabolic heat production declined at the rate of .65 W/kg per degrees C decline in rectal temperature. The time required to regain euthermia from a rectal temperature of 30 degrees C was longer for calves with added insulation and those exposed to heat lamps than for the calves in the warm water and warm water plus ethanol treatments (90 and 92 vs 59 and 63 +/- 6.4 min, respectively). During recovery, the calves rewarmed with the added insulation and heat lamps produced more heat metabolically than the calves rewarmed in warm water. Total heat production during recovery was 34.1, 31.1, 18.3, 16.9 +/- 1.07 kJ/kg for the calves with added insulation, exposed to the heat lamps, in warm water and in warm water plus an oral drench of ethanol, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to test the hypothesis that parturition duration is related to birth asphyxia in lambs and that asphyxia affects newborn lamb viability and vigor. Two sire and dam genotypes (Texel: TX; Polwarth: PW) and their crosses were represented in the study. Eighty lambs (25 PW sire × PW dam, 13 TX × TX, 25 TX × PW, and 17 PW × TX) born to 69 grazing ewes were used. At birth, the log?? length of the second stage of parturition, birth weight, placental weight, and several body measurements were recorded on all lambs, and jugular blood samples were analyzed with the i-Stat Portable Clinical Analyzer (Abbott, Montevideo, Uruguay). A modified Apgar viability score at birth and lamb behavior during their first hour of life were recorded. Brain weight, muscle:bone ratio, and bone density were recorded in 20 male lambs (5 from each breed group) that were euthanized and dissected 24 h after birth. Data were analyzed by linear regression, least squares ANOVA, and ordinal and binary logistic regressions. Mean blood gas and acid-base variables were 7.21 ± 0.09 for pH, 18.4 ± 9.8 mmHg for partial pressure of oxygen, 53 ± 12.5 mmHg for partial pressure of carbon dioxide, and -4 ± 5.1 mmol/L for extracellular fluid base excess. Parturition duration increased with birth weight (P < 0.001) and was shorter in TX ewes (P < 0.001), female lambs (P < 0.05), twins (P < 0.09), and twin females (sex × litter size interaction, P < 0.02). Twenty-six (32.9%) lambs were born asphyxiated (pO? < 10 mmHg or pH <7.1). Parturition duration increased the risk of asphyxia (P < 0.001), decreased the viability score (P < 0.001), and increased the latency to suckle the udder (P < 0.05). Twin-born lambs presented at birth a 16-fold greater risk of asphyxia (P < 0.01) and reduced placental efficiency (P < 0.05). Texel-sired lambs appeared immature at birth, with less bone density (P < 0.05), smaller brain (P < 0.05), shorter forelimbs (P < 0.05), greater anterior (P < 0.001) and posterior (P < 0.05) neck circumference, and greater muscle:bone ratio (P < 0.05). Immaturity may explain greater TX biotype survival. Together these results demonstrate that a relationship exists between parturition duration, neonatal viability and behavior, and acid-base balance values in single- and twin-born lambs, suggesting that birth asphyxia is an important risk factor in perinatal lamb mortality.  相似文献

Asphyxia during delivery is considered a main cause of stillbirth in pigs, but piglets suffering from intermittent asphyxia during delivery are also less viable at birth and less prone to adapt to extrauterine life. In an effort to improve pig viability, one attractive solution would be to increase oxygen supply through oxygen inhalation by the newborn pig. The objective of this study was to test effects of oxygen inhalation immediately after birth on various physiological parameters and piglet survival. The experiment was performed on 252 Piétrain x Large White piglets, half of them reoxygenated immediately after birth. They were maintained during 20 min in a chamber where oxygen concentration was monitored at 40% and were then put back with the sow and the control pigs. Oxygen inhalation affected piglet metabolism. Through stimulation of oxidative metabolism (reduction of circulating levels of lactate) and lowering of the level of postnatal hypothermia (particularly for the lightest pigs), oxygen inhalation increased piglet viability and reduced mortality during the 1st d of life by 75% (2 vs 8%). No additional effects were observed during the following days and overall mortality between birth and weaning at 21 d was reduced from 12 to 8%.  相似文献

In 2 experiments with young broiler chickens, origin Tetra B, heat production was measured in dependence on ambient temperature indirectly and with the gas exchange both over 24 h and in 20-minute periods beginning on their 5th day of live. The chickens, divided into 2 X 2 groups according to sex, were constantly kept in a climatic chamber changed in to a respiration chamber during the 8- or 11-week-long experiments. The maximum variation of the temperature was between 5 and 35 degrees C. In the periods of 24-h measurements over 4 days each, the ambient temperature was changed from day to day in steps of 5 degrees C. Heat production was influenced by the age of the chickens, energy intake and ambient temperature. The results of the measurements at the same age and the same energy intake and a temperature variation between 5 and 35 degrees C can well be described by polynomes of the 3rd degree up to the 8th week of live. The thermoregulatory conditioned heat production per 1 degree C below the critical temperature decreased with the age of the chickens. In the first few weeks of life it was 20 kJ, in the 6th and 7th weeks of life 10-15 kJ and then decreased to 4-5 kJ/kg life weight 0.75.d. degrees C. Based on the temperature of minimal heat production, the heat production of 16- to 30-day-old chickens increased to 60-80% at an ambient temperature of 5 degrees C; the metabolism of chickens older than 7 weeks was only increased by about 20%. For the first 2 weeks 35 degrees C were ascertained as critical temperature, for the 3rd to 6th weeks 30 degrees C and for the 7th and 8th weeks 25 degrees C.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of three resuscitation procedures on respiratory and metabolic adaptation to extra-uterine life during the first 24 h after birth in healthy newborn calves. Twenty-four newborn calves were randomly grouped into four categories: six calves did not receive any specific resuscitation procedure and were considered as controls (C); six received pharyngeal and nasal suctioning immediately after birth by use of a hand-powered vacuum pump (SUC); six received five litres of cold water poured over their heads immediately after birth (CW) and six were housed in a calf pen with an infrared radiant heater for 24 h after birth (IR). Calves were examined at birth, 5, 15, 30, 45 and 60 min, 2, 3, 6, 12 and 24 h after birth and the following measurements were recorded: physical and clinical examination, arterial blood gas analysis, pulmonary function tests using the oesophageal balloon catheter technique, arterial and venous blood acid-base balance analysis, jugular venous blood sampling for determination of metabolic, haematological and passive immune transfer variables. SUC was accompanied by improved pulmonary function efficiency and by a less pronounced decrease in body temperature. The "head shaking movement" and the subsequent temporary increase in total pulmonary resistance as well as the greater lactic acidosis due to CW were accompanied by more efficient, but statistically non-significant, pulmonary gas exchanges. IR allowed maintenance of higher body temperature without requiring increased catabolism of energetic stores. IR also caused a change in breathing pattern which contributed to better distribution of the ventilation and to slightly improved gas exchange. The results indicate that use of SUC, CW and IR modified respiratory and metabolic adaptation during the first 24 h after birth without side-effects. These resuscitation procedures should be recommended for their specific indication, i.e. cleansing of fetal fluid from upper airways, hypothermal stimulation of breathing and prevention of heat losses.  相似文献

Hypothermia is a major cause of mortality in neonatal piglets. However, there are considerable individual differences in the successful recovery from postnatal hypothermia in the common farrowing environment, and so far the causes and interactions of causes have not been studied in detail. Using 635 crossbred neonatal piglets, the aim of this study was to identify the links among different physiological and behavioral measures and their connections to the ability of piglets to overcome initial postnatal hypothermia, with rectal temperature at 2 h as the response variable. The data included birth weight, hypoxia at birth (viability score and lactate in umbilical cord blood), latency to first udder contact and first suckle, scans of individual piglet position during the first 2 h after birth, and rectal temperature at birth and 2 h postpartum. A graphical chain model was used to analyze data. The statistical variables were divided into blocks according to level (design and litter) and chronological order (prenatal, birth, perinatal, and thermoregulatory success at 2 h) before applying the graphical model to the data. Bayesian information criteria (BIC) was used for model selection. The BIC relates to maximum likelihood, but introduces an additional penalty term for the number of variables. The strength of an association between 2 variables is reported as the increase in BIC (BICinc) due to removing the link. Results indicate that at 2 h, 22.1% of the piglets had a rectal temperature below 37 °C. Out of the 16 variables included in the model, only 3 had direct links to the response variable of rectal temperature at 2 h. There was a positive relationship between rectal temperature at 2 h and birth weight (BICinc=26), and between being observed more often by the udder as opposed to alone during both the first (BICinc=8) and second hours (BICinc=19) after birth. Lighter piglets and piglets that had experienced hypoxia took longer to achieve first suckle, which in turn affected where the piglet positioned itself during the first and second hours after birth. Variables related to the birth process had no direct connection to thermoregulatory success, but were additive in the explanation of piglet behavior. The rectal temperature of individual piglets at 2 h depends largely on piglet birth weight and on piglet position in relation to sow and littermates. Birth weight is the most important single factor in successful recovery from postnatal hypothermia.  相似文献

Individual mean blood glucose values and the scatter of individual values were determined in six healthy and six anaemic pigs before, during and after ten minutes of exercise on a belt moving at 78 m/min (environmental temperature 22-24 degrees C, relative humidity 55-65%). The glucose regulatory capacity of anaemic pigs was inferior to that of healthy pigs. Blood glucose regulation was related to haemoglobin content and to the increase in rectal temperature during exercise.  相似文献

Skin and rectal temperature measurements were taken on 15 crossbred sows and gilts (225 kg) during the last 5 days of prepartum period and compared with those recorded in the first 8 days after parturition. The correlation of skin and rectal temperature values was not good during either period, although an increased correlation was noted in the postparturient period. The rectal temperature significantly (P less than 0.05) increased in the postparturient period, but the mean surface temperature was unchanged. This would indicate a decreased blood flow to the surface, since an equivalent blood flow to the surface after a rectal temperature increase would result in a concomitant mean surface temperature increase. The decreased flow to the surface of the animal was selective, since a significant (P less than 0.05) decrease in surface temperature was noted at the tailhead, perineum, vulva, mammae-caudal, and eye, whereas the surface temperature of the mammae-cranial and mammae-middle was significantly (P less than 0.05) increased.

The effect of a passive heat and moisture exchanger on tracheal and large airway temperature, as reflected by esophageal temperature at the thoracic inlet, was determined for 12 anesthetized and ventilated tumor-bearing dogs undergoing whole-body hyperthermia at 42 C. Delivered thermal dose to the esophagus and rectum during 120 minutes of whole-body hyperthermia was quantified as the thermal dose summary measure EQ43. The heat and moisture exchanger significantly increased esophageal EQ43 from 7.3 minutes to 12.1 minutes. Esophageal EQ43, however, remained lower than rectal EQ43. Although use of a heat and moisture exchanger improved esophageal temperature during whole-body hyperthermia, presumably through improved airway temperature, additional methods will be necessary to increase esophageal and airway temperature to the target value of 42 C.  相似文献

To survive, the newborn lamb must be able to maintain body temperature and to stand and move to the udder to suck colostrum to fuel heat production. The objective of this study was to investigate whether neonatal lambs showing slow behavioral progress to standing and sucking also have an impaired ability to maintain body temperature. The time taken to stand and suck after birth, rectal temperatures, and blood samples were collected from 115 newborn single, twin, and triplet lambs of 2 breeds, Scottish Blackface and Suffolk, which are known to show variations in their neonatal behavioral progress. Blood samples were assayed for thyroid hormones, known to be involved in heat production, and cortisol, which plays a role in tissue maturation before birth. In addition, colostrum samples were collected from the 56 ewes that gave birth to the lambs, and assayed for protein, fat, and vitamin contents. Heavy lambs (more than 1 SD above the breed mean), Blackface lambs, and singleton or twin lambs were quicker to stand and suck from their mothers than lightweight (more than 1 SD below the breed mean), Suffolk, or triplet lambs. Low birth weight lambs also had lower rectal temperatures than heavier lambs (P < 0.01), as did Suffolk compared with Blackface lambs (P < 0.001). Lambs that were slow to suck after birth had lower rectal temperatures than quick lambs, and this difference persisted for at least 3 d after birth. Within breed, heavy lambs had greater plasma triiodothyronine and thyroxine immediately after birth than light lambs. Blackface lambs had greater plasma triiodothyronine and thyroxine than Suffolk lambs but tended to have less cortisol. Colostrum produced by Blackface ewes had a greater fat content than that of Suffolk ewes (P < 0.001). Thus, lambs that are behaviorally slow at birth are also less able to maintain their body temperature after birth. Although part of their lower body temperature might be attributable to behavioral influences on thermoregulation, the data also suggest that physiological differences exist between these animals. These differences may be related to different degrees of maturity at birth.  相似文献

The plasma concentrations of adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine, thyroxine, tri-iodothyronine, cortisol, insulin and glucose were estimated in lambs aged one to five hours during basal metabolism and then during summit metabolism (the maximum thermogenic response to cold stress). The increase in metabolic rate from basal metabolism to summit metabolism was associated with marked increases in the plasma levels of adrenaline, noradrenaline, cortisol and glucose and a decrease in the plasma level of insulin. There were no quantitative relationships between summit metabolic rate and the plasma levels of any of the hormones measured. These findings suggest that the marked lamb-to-lamb variation in heat production capacity found here and elsewhere cannot be directly attributed to variation in the activities of the sympathetic nervous system, the thyroid, the adrenal cortex or the pancreas. Concurrent estimations of respiratory quotient suggested that the newborn lamb has a marked dependence on carbohydrate as an energy substrate at high rates of heat production.  相似文献

For the neonatal patient, precocity of diagnosis is crucial for effectiveness of medical approach. However, the newborn has its own physiological peculiarities due to ongoing adaptive mechanism for extrauterine life and deserves special attention in order to underline a specific management or clinical approach. The objective of this work was to verify clinical adaptations and biochemical balance of neonates during immediate period, with special reference to haematological, renal and metabolic functions. Neonatal puppies (n = 51) were physically examined for vitality and rectal temperature at birth, 5 and 60 min post‐birth. Blood was collected at birth and 60 min post‐birth for analysis of glucose, sodium, potassium, chlorine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), haematocrit and haemoglobin. Neonatal vitality was lower at birth compared with 5 min and 60 min post‐birth. Progressive decline in rectal temperature (36.5 ± 0.3°C, 34.2 ± 0.2°C, 32.3 ± 0.5°C) was observed at birth, 5 min and 60 min post‐birth, respectively. Puppies presented slight hyponatremia (140.7 ± 0.5 mmol/L) at birth and hypopotassemia (3.5 ± 0.1 mmol/L) and blood urea nitrogen (13.1 ± 0.7 mg/dl) during the first hour, and high haematocrit (45.1 ± 1.0%) and haemoglobin (15.3 ± 0.3 g/dl) concentration. In conclusion, puppies had rapid evolution of vitality. Marked decrease in rectal temperature occurred at 5 min post‐birth. Haematological values of neonates immediately after birth reflected mainly the dam's blood status, not being useful for a blood panel at this time point. The peculiar pattern of BUN, sodium and potassium observed during transition period, suggested that specific reference range should be considered for neonatal puppies.  相似文献

Three postoperative analgesic protocols were assigned randomly to 24 healthy dogs after thoracotomy at the left fourth intercostal space. Morphine was administered parenterally to eight dogs after tracheal extubation; selective intercostal nerve blocks with bupivacaine hydrochloride and epinephrine were administered to eight dogs before closure of the thorax; and bupivacaine hydrochloride and epinephrine were administered through an interpleural catheter to eight dogs after tracheal extubation. Heart rate, respiratory rate, rectal temperature, hematocrit, plasma protein, blood gas, and pain score evaluations were recorded before surgery and 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours after extubation. Morphine caused significant decreases in blood pH and blood oxygen tensions, and significant increases in carbon dioxide tensions. Dogs treated with intercostal nerve blocks had no significant changes in these parameters, and dogs treated with interpleural bupivacaine had significant decreases in blood oxygen tension. All dogs had significant decreases in rectal temperature, and hypothermia was prolonged after morphine. Analgesia was initially adequate in most dogs, but some dogs in each treatment group had recurrence of pain and were treated with interpleural bupivacaine. One dog developed pneumothorax. Interpleural administration of bupivacaine produced analgesia equal to that produced by systemic administration of morphine or selective intercostal nerve block with bupivacaine. Bupivacaine was easily readministered through an interpleural catheter. Respiratory compromise was less in dogs treated with bupivacaine than in dogs treated with morphine. After intercostal thoracotomy, interpleural bupivacaine provided prolonged analgesia with fewer blood gas alterations than morphine.  相似文献

Prolonged infusions of bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are known to model gram-negative bacterial infections, but the basic mechanisms of the LPS effects on feed intake and metabolism and their potential interdependence are largely unknown. The aim of the present study was to distinguish and to better characterize the feeding suppressive and metabolic effects of LPS. Six heifers were infused intravenously for 100 min with either 1) LPS (2 microg/kg BW) with free access to feed, 2) saline with free access to feed, or 3) saline with feeding restricted to the amount of feed consumed after LPS infusion. Feed intake, body temperature, plasma concentrations of various metabolites and hormones, and the respiratory quotient and heat production were measured. The LPS reduced feed intake and induced pronounced changes in metabolic energy turnover and fat and carbohydrate metabolism that were largely independent of the concomitant feed intake reduction. Some of the metabolic changes were biphasic; the first phase resembled a stress response with increases in plasma glucose and cortisol, and the second phase reflected a beginning energy deficit with low plasma glucose and enhanced lipolysis. The coincidence of a short-term surge of plasma insulin with marked transient decreases in plasma FFA, glycerol, and beta-hydroxybutyrate as well as with the transition from hyper- to hypoglycemia indicates that insulin plays a role in some of the metabolic responses to LPS. The failure of LPS to clearly increase energy expenditure despite the increase in body temperature suggests that anaerobic mechanisms of heat production and, perhaps, a reduced peripheral blood flow contributed to the fever. Many of the initial metabolic responses occurred before and, therefore, independent of, an increase in circulating tumor necrosis factor-alpha.  相似文献
