Artificial photoperiods that postpone sexual maturation and increase growth are now widely used in the Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. farming industry. Few studies have been carried out to examine the effect of this treatment on fish behaviour and welfare in production cages. In this study, echo‐integration was used to observe the swimming depth and fish density of salmon in 20‐m‐deep production cages illuminated by lamps mounted above the water surface (SURF) or submerged in the cage (SUBS). From January to May, SUBS swam at a greater depth (5–11 m) than SURF (1–3 m) at night. SURF descended and SUBS ascended at dawn, but SUBS were still swimming at greater depth than SURF during the day from January to March. The difference in swimming depth resulted in SURF swimming at a median fish density about twice as high as SUBS at night and up to five times the calculated fish density. SURF increased the utilization of the cage volume as the biomass increased, but fish swimming at the highest density did so at up to 20 times the calculated fish density. The results suggest that salmon position themselves in relation to the artificial light gradient to maintain schooling behaviour and that the use of submersible lights may be a precaution to secure the welfare of caged salmon.  相似文献

The vertical distribution and seasonal timing of sexual maturation were investigated in Atlantic cod in four large commercial sea cages in Northern Norway during their second year of on‐growth. Replicate cages were exposed to either natural light (NL) or continuous light (LL) from May 2007 to January 2008. Hydro‐acoustic monitoring revealed that the cod in the NL cages were mainly distributed from 5 to 13 m depth at day while they were more dispersed and swam deeper at night. A clear ascent was observed prior to feeding events. The cod in the LL cages displayed a similar seasonal and daily pattern, but with a more dispersed vertical distribution range at both day and night. It is hypothesized that surface feeding motivation resulted in cod preferentially occupying the upper reaches of the sea cage, generally at depths < 13 m. This would also reduce the need for excessive alterations in swim bladder volume. Both the LL and the NL groups were exposed to LL the year before the study, resulting in first time sexual maturation (puberty) being delayed until the summer in both groups. However, while cod in the NL cages matured during the autumn 2007, the LL cod did not.  相似文献

Two field studies were carried out with farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salarL.) in sea cages to examine various effects of artificial light (AL) and the vertical distribution of salmon on lice infestation.

The use of AL light caused an overall increase in lice infestation in both experiments. The first study showed that salmon held at 0–4 m depth in cages developed higher infestation than salmon held at greater depths (4–8 and 8–12 m) under both natural light (NL) and AL. In the second study, salmon maintained in 14-m deep sea cages that were exposed to AL with different light intensities. The AL treatments resulted directly in different diel and seasonal patterns of vertical distribution of the salmon and also different temporal patterns in lice infestations. So indirectly the infestation pattern appeared to be correlated with median day-time swimming depth of the salmon.  相似文献

Abstract – The possibility to increase the proportion of migrating hatchery‐reared smolts by reducing their food ration was studied. Lake‐migrating, hatchery‐reared salmon (Salmo salar) and trout (Salmo trutta) smolts were either fed normal rations, based on recommendations from the fish‐farming industry, or reduced (15–20%) rations. They were released into the River Klarälven, western Sweden, and followed as they swam downstream to Lake Vänern, a distance of around 25 km. For both Atlantic salmon and brown trout, smolts fed a reduced ration migrated faster than fish fed a normal ration. Furthermore, a higher proportion of salmon smolts fed reduced rations migrated to the lake than fish fed normal rations in 2007 but not in 2006. This difference between years corresponded to greater treatment differences in size and smolt status in 2007 than in 2006. For trout, the proportion of migrating individuals and smolt development did not differ with ration size. Trout migrants fed a normal ration had a higher standard metabolic rate (SMR) than nonmigrants, whereas there was no difference in SMR between migrating and nonmigrating salmon. These results show that it is possible to use a reduced food ration to increase the migration speed of both Atlantic salmon and brown trout and to increase the proportion of migrating Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

Abstract Using underwater cameras, data were collected on the feeding behaviour and swimming speeds of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L., gilthead sea bream Sparus aurata L. and European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax L. in sea cages. Comparisons were made between the behaviours of fish fed on demand using interactive feedback systems and those of fish fed under the standard feeding practice of each farm (control). In all three species, swimming speeds were similar before feeding , but they were significantly higher in the control regimes during feeding. When fed on demand, sea bass had reduced swimming speed just before and during feeding compared with that observed during the non‐feeding periods. Higher proportions of feeding fish were observed in the control regime cages than in fish fed on demand for all three species, indicating a greater feeding intensity during meals in the control regimes. This was further supported by observations of an increase in the density of sea bass in the upper water in the control cages during feeding. The results suggest decreased levels of competition between the on demand‐fed fish during feeding, which might be hypothesized to lead to improved growth and production efficiency in aquaculture.  相似文献

Biwa salmon Oncorhynchus masou subsp. were tagged with ultrasonic transmitters and released in Lake Biwa, Japan. The temporal and spatial distributions were investigated by using two types of ultrasonic telemetry system, active tracking and passive monitoring. Biwa salmon cruised throughout the north basin horizontally and were distributed from the surface to the bottom vertically in the lake. An individual monitored for over 1 year showed the diurnal patterns of vertical distribution and the seasonal patterns of horizontal distribution. The vertical distribution of the fish during daytime in the stratified period was bimodal, suggesting a feeding strategy targeting both fish near the thermocline and the amphipods near the bottom. During the night, however, the fish maintained a fixed depth range. The fish were distributed over a wider horizontal area in the mixed period than in the stratified period. Three individuals swam in shallower water and experienced higher water temperatures during the spawning season than before moving between offshore and coastal areas.  相似文献

Within a few months of the establishment of a sea cage salmon farm in the Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand, sediment physical and chemical characteristics reflected the extremely high sedimentation rate immediately underneath the fish cages. In the surface sediment, dry weight was reduced to about one-third, density was halved and the volatile solids content increased about seven-fold compared with nearby sediments. Similarly, the sediment pools of ammonium, organic N and total phosphorus were much higher underneath the cages than at farther removed sites. The total N/P ratios were the same (1.5) in the surface sediment underneath the cages and in the feed but markedly higher in the less affected areas. In situ nitrification and denitrification were not measurable in the immediate vicinity of the salmon farm. The potentials for nitrification and denitrification gradually increased from virtually nil underneath the fish cages to commonly observed rates about 30 m from the cages. The complete absence of denitrifying enzymes in the salmon farm sediment to a depth of 6 cm explained why nitrate diffusing from the water column into the sediment was not denitrified. Within 10 m of the fish cages the bulk of added 15N-nitrate was reduced to 15N-ammonium. The results demonstrate that nitrification/denitrification in the immediate vicinity of a sea cage fish farm is not a significant mechanism of N removal.  相似文献

Eight temperature-recording data storage tags were recovered from three salmonids in Alaska (pink and coho salmon and steelhead trout) and five chum salmon in Japan after 21–117 days, containing the first long-term records of ambient temperature from Pacific salmonids migrating at sea. Temperature data imply diel patterns of descents to deeper, cooler water and ascents to the surface. Fish were found at higher average temperatures at night, with narrower temperature ranges and fewer descents than during the day. Fish tagged in the Gulf of Alaska were at higher temperatures on average (10–12°C) than chum salmon tagged in the Bering Sea (8–10°C). Chum salmon were also found at a wider range of temperatures (−1–22°C vs 5–15°C). This is probably related both to the different oceanographic regions through which the fish migrated, as well as species differences in thermal range and vertical movements. Proportions of time that individual fish spent at different temperatures seemed to vary among oceanographic regions. Steelhead trout may descend to moderate depths (50 m) and not be limited to the top few metres, as had been believed. Japanese chum salmon may seek deep, cold waters as they encounter warm surface temperatures on their homeward migrations. Temperature data from all fish showed an initial period (4–21 days) of day and night temperatures near those of sea surface temperatures, suggesting a period of recuperation from tagging trauma. A period of tagging recuperation suggests that vertical movement data from short-term ultrasonic telemetry studies may not represent normal behaviour of fish. The considerable diurnal and shorter-term variation in ambient temperatures suggests that offshore ocean distribution may be linked more to prey distribution and foraging than to sea surface temperatures.  相似文献

Problematic sea lice infestations on farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) have motivated extensive research and development into new methods to prevent, monitor and control sea lice. Most of these technologies require detailed information on the behaviour, spatial distribution and demography of lice on host fish. This study investigated how salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestation density varies across the host's surface under sea cage farming conditions. Lice abundance, demography and attachment location were tracked over time, with repeated sampling of 300 individually tagged salmon across three replicate experimental sea cages. The data reveal clear differences in attachment locations according to sex and stage, but with an overall preference for the dorsal surface among mobile stages—dorsal head for adult females and dorsal-posterior section for males and pre-adults. Total lice abundance was highly variable between repeated measures of individual fish, consistent with frequent host-switching or mortality. Total lice numbers also declined between sampling dates, likely due to handling, with lost mobile lice being almost exclusively adult males. As the distribution of sea lice on hosts is likely determined by numerous factors, future image-based automated detection systems should be validated in settings that reflect the complex host–parasite interactions that occur in open farming systems.  相似文献

Abstract –  A segment of the Shibetsu River was restored to reconstruct the ecological condition of the previously canalized river stretch to a more natural, meandering state. In this study, we investigated the upstream migration of chum salmon ( Oncorhynchus keta ) using radio transmitters to track the horizontal position of fish and data loggers to detect the vertical swimming depth of fish, simultaneously. The monitored salmon travelled near the bottom of the water column and along the riverbanks, and tended to hold in deep, slow current areas in the canalized river. In the restored segment, the fish swam at more shallow depths and against stronger currents. Although the three tracked fish all reached the confluent point and chose to enter the restored segment, they did not remain in the segment for long. This indicates that the restored area facilitates the upward migration of the chum salmon.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in sea cages exhibit feeding patterns that vary both diurnally and seasonally. Hitherto, there are no data reporting feed rate and its variation through a complete annual cycle. Here we present data from Scotland showing diurnal and interseasonal variation in feeding patterns and feeding rates of Atlantic salmon fed daily to satiation from shortly after transfer to seawater until harvest about 11 months later. A major feeding peak regularly occurred soon after dawn, and feeding rates remained high for approximately one hour. Over the remainder of the day, the fish fed at a lower but steady rate. Relative feed intake varied over the trial, being initially high in summer followed by a sharp decline in autumn, and then further declining until fish reached harvest size at the beginning of the following summer. Further investigations of the relationship between variation in circannual feeding patterns and environmental parameters should now be carried out to improve the understanding of the mechanism behind these patterns.  相似文献

Two extruded diets designed to have fat levels of 220 g kg−1 (F22) and 300 g kg−1 (F30) were fed to Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. in two different experiments during the sea rearing period (from 0.2–0.3 kg to 3–4 kg). Each diet was fed restricted and isoenergetically at two feeding rates to fish in triplicate groups. In one of the experiments, a supplementary group of fish was fed to satiation with the F30 diet. All fish were slaughtered and evaluated for quality according to a commercial standard.
No difference in growth was observed between fish fed the two diets at similar feeding rates and the growth was proportional to the amount of dietary energy offered. Feed conversion ratios decreased according to higher energy content in the F30 diet, and the nitrogen and phosphorus retention increased significantly. Fish fed the F30 diet revealed a higher incidence of sexual maturity. Fat content in cutlets and dressed carcasses were significantly affected by feeding rate but not by dietary fat level. Fish fed the F30 diet had more visceral fat and, consequently, lower dress-out percentage. Mortality, liver size and liver colour were not significantly affected by dietary fat level.
These experiments showed that even large differences in dietary fat level employed for the entire sea rearing period of Atlantic salmon, did not, or only marginally affected the cutlet and dressed carcass fat content. The high fat diet improved the feed utilization, thus decreasing the discharge to the environments. Furthermore, it resulted in greater growth at ad libitum feeding.  相似文献

Abstract. An increase in mortalities, due to the failure of some smolts to feed after transfer to sea cages, has been observed in many fish farms during the last 2 years. In the present study mortalities were as high as 9–5% and the majority of these appeared 7–9 weeks post-transfer. Comparisons of length-weight relationships between the initial group of smolts released in the cage and at 3-, 6- and 8-wcek intervals after transfer showed that a proportion of the fish had lost weight. The condition factor of individually measured fish also confirmed that with increasing time after transfer some fish were in a much poorer condition.
The feeding of smolts after transfer was not related to their size. The fork length distribution of feeding and non-feeding fish showed that feeding fish were recruited from all size classes of the initial population.
The lack of appetite in smolts after transfer was demonstrated by the reduced number of fish feeding and by the amount of food consumed. In the first week after transfer only 10% of the fish were feeding in the sea cage, increasing to 65% after 5 weeks. In the tanks (where there were no failed smolts) 95% of the smolts were feeding within 5 weeks after transfer, whereas in the sea cage it took 8 weeks before this figure was reached.  相似文献

Abstract. Four feeding trials with Israeli carp, Cyprinus carpio L., were performed in cages or in ponds in order to investigate responses to lysine supplementation of low protein carp feeds under different practical conditions. In each of the trials one of the basic conditions was different: fish size—small (80–125g) or large (560g); temperature—22°C or 26°C; density—cages or ponds. In each trial 2–3 ration sizes × 2–3 lysine levels were tested. A basal diet of 25% protein and 1·35% lysine served for all the trials.
At low feeding levels, no responses to lysine supplements were found either at 22 ± 2°C or at 26 ± 2°C (0600 h) for all fish sizes. At higher feeding levels, at both temperatures, 0·5% lysine-HCl supplements to 1·7% total lysine yielded significant growth increases. Further supplements to 2·1% lysine (=8·4% of the protein) brought an additional response only from small fish of 90g in cages at the highest ration and temperature. In ponds at 26°C, the effects on small fish of 80g were smaller, probably due to available natural food. The reduction in lysine retention suggested that 1·7% lysine might have been adequate even at optimal conditions in ponds.  相似文献

Abstract  – Movements of adult Atlantic salmon were tracked through a series of four fish passes and an impoundment on the River Conon system, Northern Scotland. Proportions of fish passing individual obstructions ranged from 63 to 100%. The cumulative effect was that only 4 of the 54 tagged fish reached the spawning areas. The fish were delayed for 1–41 days at a pool-and-overfall ladder and 1–52 days at a Borland fish lift. The fish swam through a 10 km long reservoir at 0.21–1.16 km·h−1. A total of 13 fish negotiated a 2.5 km long, 3 m diameter diversion tunnel through a mountain to their home river. High levels of electromyogram (EMG) activity were recorded during ascent of a pool-and-overfall fish ladder, indicating that high energy demanding burst swimming was required.  相似文献

External morphological characteristics were used to identify escaped farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in a coastal salmon fishery in County Antrim, Northern Ireland during four fishing seasons and at an adjacent freshwater location (R. Bush) during a 5-year period. Out of a total of 36 326 adult salmon examined in the fishery, 883 (2.4%) were identified as having escaped from sea cages. Annual average values ranged from 0.26% to 4.04% of the fish caught. Occurrence of escapees entering an adult trap in fresh water averaged 0.88%, with a range of 0.13–2.62%, depending on year. No correlation between presence in the marine fishery and in fresh water was evident, the latter year-round figures probably being more indicative of presence of escapees in spawning stocks. Entry to fresh water was significantly later on average for escaped farmed salmon, compared with wild salmon.  相似文献

For migratory fishes such as Atlantic salmon, temporal variation in the utilization of thermal and depth habitats in the marine environment is likely to occur at both broad and fine scales, reflecting both ecological and metabolic factors. To test this, we implanted 26 Atlantic salmon kelts (i.e., post‐spawners) descending Campbellton River, Newfoundland, with data storage tags that recorded date/time, internal and external temperatures, pressure, and light. The salmon that returned to Campbellton River after an average of 62 days at sea were consecutive spawning kelt. Detailed data were recovered from eight of these fish and revealed distinct patterns in their utilization of thermal and depth habitats. Water temperatures experienced over the period at sea showed a wide range for all fish (from <0 to nearly 20°C); however, there were two clear frequency modes; one at 6–7°C and the other at 11–12°C. The cooler mode was indicative of daytime profiles and the warmer mode of night‐time profiles. This corresponded with the depth profiles, which indicated that salmon dove more frequently below 5 m (mean ± SD = 23 ± 0.9 dives per day) and spent less time (approximately 18%) near the sea surface (<1 m) during the day than during the night (4 ± 0.4 dives per night; approximately 45% time <1 m). The diurnal pattern may be indicative of a reliance on vision for feeding at depth and the short duration of dives (<10 min) may be a strategy that allows salmon a metabolic advantage (e.g., swimming capacity) over their prey living constantly at depth in cool waters.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour, growth and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of cage‐held Atlantic salmon parr (Salmo salar L.) were studied when in 576 m3 (12 m × 12 m × 4 m) commercial freshwater cages under ambient water temperature (8.84±3.53°C) and photoperiod (11.02±2.05 h) for 205 days. The effect of feeding regime on fin damage was also investigated. Six groups (n=31 234±2051 fish group−1, initial stocking density 1.25±0.14 kg m−3) were fed to satiation using either (a) an imposed regime involving scheduled, fixed ration feeding every 10 min from dawn till dusk or (b) on demand from dawn till dusk using commercial interactive feedback systems. During feeding, there were no significant differences in aggression although swimming speeds and turning angles were significantly higher in fish under the imposed regime. On‐demand feeding significantly reduced the incidence of dorsal fin damage. There was no clear relationship between fish size, feed regime and the incidence of fin damage until 1 week before the fish were transferred to marine cages, when the smallest fish under each feeding regime had the highest incidence of fin damage. Interestingly, growth did not differ between regimes, but fish under the imposed regime were significantly overfed and achieved higher FCRs.  相似文献

SUMMARY: The vertical distribution of dwarf ayu Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis in the pelagic waters of Lake Biwa was evaluated from June to September in 1995–97 from eight acoustic surveys using a quantitative echosounder. In each survey, echoes from a depth range of 3 m to the sea bottom were collected at a station every 2.7 s for 24 h together with measurements of vertical profiles of water temperature and chlorophyll-a. The ayu's echoes were identified using an underwater video camera. The ayu were observed near the maximum chlorophyll-a depth and above the thermocline. Their density was highest at depths of 4–11 m with 2–4 individuals/m 3 and was almost zero below 20 m. Echo signs were recorded as having a frequent duration of more than 1 h at night, whereas were of a shorter duration in the day. The fish stay in the epilimnion during the day without any clear vertical migration, but are distributed more uniformly at night. The advantages of remaining in the epilimnion are discussed in terms of food availability and predator avoidance.  相似文献
