Heat treatment of Pinus pinaster and Eucalyptus globulus wood was carried out by hot air in an oven for 2–24 h at 170–200°C and by steam in an autoclave for 2–12 h at 190–210°C. The colour parameters L*, a* and b* were determined by the CIELAB method on radial, tangential and transverse sections of untreated and treated wood, and their variation with regard to the treatment (ΔL*, Δa* and Δb*) were calculated in percent. For untreated eucalypt wood, lightness (L*) varied between 54.1 and 63.8% with a* between 7.4 and 8.5, and b* between 15.7 and 19.9. For untreated pine wood, L* varied between 67.3 and 76.1%, a* between 6.9 and 7.6 and b* between 16.3 and 24.1. Oven heat-treated wood became darker (ΔL* about 50% for 4% mass loss), and this was more for eucalypt wood under the same treatment conditions. In general, the contribution of red (a*) and yellow (b*) colour decreased with heat treatment. The transverse section of the two species darkened less for both the treatments with small differences between radial and tangential sections. Lightness decrease was related to chemical changes; with good correlations with glucose (R = 0.96), hemicelluloses (R 2 = 0.92) and lignin (R 2 = 0.86). As regards colour, the heat treatments showed an interesting potential to improve the wood quality for solid timber products from pine and eucalypt.  相似文献

Correlation coefficient shown that sapwood and heartwood with lighter colour (L*) is less resistance to fungal attack, but redness colour (a*) increasing decay resistance.

    A discolouration that appeared on the surfaces of a European white birch (Betula pubescens) board during vacuum drying was studied by means of colour measurements (CIEL*a*b*), elemental analysis and the analysis of extractives. The discoloured surface layer of the dried board contained substantially more methanol-soluble extractives than did the light-coloured part (50.7 mg g−1 vs. 26.7 mg g−1 dry wood), and the colour difference (ΔE* ab 20.0) between the two extracts was notable. Characterization by means of GC and 13C NMR spectroscopy showed that the extracts contain sugars (mainly glucose and fructose), low-molecular-weight phenolic compounds, proanthocyanidins, Brauns’ lignin and fatty acid esters. Concentrations of sugars, low-molecular-weight phenols, proanthocyanidins and Brauns’ lignin were higher in the discoloured surface layer than in the light-coloured part. The yellowness of the surface layer was associated with the accumulation of low-molecular-weight phenolic extractives, and the redness with Brauns’ lignin and possibly proanthocyanidins.  相似文献

    Element content and pH value in wood tissues of veneer grade logs of P. serotina Ehrh. were investigated with regard to wood colour variations, measured in the CIEL*a*b* system. The average pH value of heartwood tissue was about pH 4.0 and medium colour parameters of veneer sheets were determined at L* = 73, a* = 9.8, and b* = 23.5. Optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) analyses showed differences in the element contents between two regional forest sites coming from Pennsylvania and West Virginia, USA, respectively. The latter is mainly characterised by higher variations of micro-element content in the transition zone (influencing heartwood formation) and also pH value of wood tissue, which contributes to higher variations in colour response of industrially produced veneer sheets. Investigations under industrial conditions underline the correlation between length and intensity of heat treatment in veneer production and colour development: with increasing duration and temperature of hot water treatment, veneer surfaces become darker and wood colour is intensified (ΔL = 3.6, Δa = 2.1, comparing 12 and 72 h of hot water treatment at 60°C). However, no equalisation of wood colour was achieved by modifying the treatment conditions. Artificial radiation by UV–visible light, quickly and extensively darkens and intensifies wood colour (ΔL = 16, Δa = 3.5, and Δb = 4.0 after 15 h of artificial radiation), but variations in wood colour deriving from different treatment conditions during veneer production, were not reduced.  相似文献

    This study evaluated wood color change (ΔE*) and the surface quality in 10 tropical wood species painted with three finishes (composed of wax and polyurethane). Two weathering conditions were tested: natural weathering (NW) and artificial weathering (AW). The results showed that the application of these finishes, decreased the luminosity (L*), increased the redness (a*) and the yellowness (b*) parameters in all species. ΔE*, after weathering exposure, was affected significantly by L*, a*, and b, whereas for finished or pretreated wood, L* and b* are the main parameters affecting ΔE* in the 10 tropical species studied. ΔE* values found in different finishes and pretreatments are cataloged as total change of color. Other important results were that tropical light colored timber with natural pretreatment produced higher ΔE* than dark colored timber. The stains and fungal development were observed in polyurethane finishes in NW, but not in AW. The irregular and mosaic flaws were not observed in any kind of finish or pretreatment of surface. The values of the quality index created, which considered long and short lines and switch flaws, were lowest in NW and in waxy finish, while the highest value was obtained with the polyurethane finish.  相似文献

    The color of 97 species of wood specimens from French Guiana was measured on their radial and tangential surfaces with a colorimeter. We obtained the tristimulus values of X, Y, and Z of the 10° standard observer under the illuminant of D 65, and the values of the CIELAB color system, L *, a*, b*, C*, and h. When the lightness index (L *) was <54, b *, C *, and h showed positive correlations against L *. When L * was >54, a * and C * showed negative correlations against L *. These results imply that wood color should be discussed by separating wood specimens into the high and low-lightness groups. A good positive correlation was found between the L * and h throughout the whole range of L *. It is thought that the value of h can be an important index, as can L *, for comparing of wood color because h shows a simple relation with L *.  相似文献

    The focus of this study was to investigate the chemical and colour changes occurring at different exposure times on artificially photo-irradiated surfaces of normal and red heartwood in beech in order to understand the mechanisms that cause the changes and to evaluate the possibility of usages of beech not only for energy production purposes. In this sense, surface colour modifications are of crucial importance to define the commercial value of beech wood. The artificial photo-irradiation of the wood samples was performed in a Solar Box, equipped with an ultraviolet filter that cuts off the spectrum at 280 nm. Reflectance spectrophotometry and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were used to assess artificial sunlight influence. The experimental data were statistically treated to evaluate their significance. Colour monitoring revealed that wood surface colour undergoes an important variation due to photo-irradiation, occurring within the first 24–48 h. Moreover, it was found that the chromatic coordinates (L*a*b*) in normal wood and in red heartwood tended to similar values after 504 h. FTIR spectroscopy allowed for investigating the rate of photodegradation of wood surface due to oxidation reactions of wood components. The results were validated by statistical analysis applied both to the colorimetric and spectroscopic data.  相似文献

    A study of material thinned from a 9-year-old Eucalyptus dunnii progeny trial revealed that E. dunnii has light yellowish wood that is relatively uniform in color, and varies little within and between trees. The variation in color between half-sib families is small, but is statistically significant (P = 0.008). Most of the color variation relates to the yellowness (CIE b*) of the wood, which in heartwood is moderately heritable (h = 0.6). The color of the endgrain, especially its lightness (CIE L*) and whiteness index (E313), is correlated with basic density, hardness, and rates of shrinkage. The CIE rectangular opponent scale (L*, a*, b*) appeared to be the most informative about wood color and properties, and no additional information was gleaned from an analysis of full spectral data in the range 400–700 nm.  相似文献

    This study is about relationships between total extractive contents, heartwood colour and light-induced discolourations of the tropical species African Padauk (Pterocarpus soyauxii Taub) and Jatoba (Hymenaea courbaril L.). Wood surface colour was measured spectrophotometrically before and after light irradiation. Subsequently, the total extractive content was determined and linked to the colour parameters. Total extractive content varied between 6 % (Jatoba) and 27 % (African Padauk). The fact that non-irradiated Jatoba appeared lighter and more yellow with higher extractives contents, opposed the often assumed relationship that more heartwood extractives cause darker wood. For light-irradiated Jatoba wood only the reddishness was more intense when samples had higher extractive content. In contrast, light-irradiated African Padauk showed significant differences in all colour parameters as extractives varied. High overall colour change in African Padauk due to light irradiation was observed; however, no relationship with the extractive content existed. In contrast, discolouration rate of Jatoba wood strongly varied with its extractive content. Individual wood species react differently during exposure to light and therefore require specific surface treatment to maintain the desired colour appearance and colour stability.  相似文献

    A series of experiments were carried out to investigate the colour stability of chemically treated and thermally modified wood compared to non-modified wood during long term artificial UV light irradiation. One set of wood samples was vacuum-pressure impregnated with alkaline (pH 9.8) copper (II) ethanolamine aqueous solution, while another set of samples from the same wood block was thermally modified at 210°C and −0.90 bar for 2 h. The treated and modified wood samples along with the non-modified ones were exposed to artificial UV light with the wave length in the region of UVA (315–400 nm) and UVB (280–315 nm) intermittently for 500 h. Colour measurements were carried out throughout the irradiation period at an interval of 100 h according to CIEL*a*b* system, where the results are presented in terms of ΔE, ΔL*, Δa* and Δb* values. Better photo-stability in terms of colour changes was recorded for both treated and modified woods compared to the non-modified one. By means of EPR and DRIFT spectroscopic study it was shown that some degree of colour stability of treated and modified woods, achieved during artificial UV light irradiation, resulted from lignin modifications and monomers of phenolic compounds.  相似文献

    To investigate the effect of heat on color and surface chemistry of wood flour (WF), unextracted, extracted and delignified samples of commercial WF were heated at 120 °C for 24 h and analyzed by colorimetry, diffuse reflectance visible (DRV), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and Fourier transform Raman (FT-Raman) spectroscopies. Unextracted samples showed a slight increase in CIEL*a*b* color coordinates, a * and b *. Compared with unextracted samples, color changes of the extracted samples varied with composition of the extraction solvents with generally smaller increases in a * and larger decreases in b * values. Delignified samples were marked by even larger increases in both a * and b * values. The color changes could be explained by analysis of the respective DRV, FTIR and FT-Raman spectra of the samples before and after heating. Heating of the extracted WF at 120 °C resulted in a red shift of the absorption at 430 nm and increase in absorption in the violet-blue spectral region of visible light. Delignified samples showed even more pronounced absorption in this spectral region after heating.  相似文献

    Abstract

    This work was an investigation of the effect of nanoparticles on the durability of wood specimens exposed to artificial weathering. TiO2 and clay nanoparticles were mixed with preservative (Wolmanit CX-8) for improving the durability of Norway spruce (Picea abies). Impregnated and untreated specimens were subjected to Atlas Solar Simulator accelerated ageing test chamber for solar radiation and water spray exposure. The effectiveness of the treatment against colour and chemical changes was investigated using CIEL*a*b* colour measurements system and Fourier transform infrared analysis. The present study showed that the wood specimens that had been treated with preservatives containing nanoparticles were slightly more stable against artificial ageing than both untreated specimens and specimens treated with preservative alone.  相似文献

    Sequential extractions of the mild ball-milled Eucommia ulmoides Oliv with 80% neutral dioxane, 75% dioxane containing 0.025 M HCl, 75% dioxane containing 0.1 M NaOH, 60% ethanol containing 0.5 M NaOH, 5% KOH, 5% NaOH, and 8% KOH at 75°C for 3 h released 91.3% of the original lignin. The results showed that the procedure for extracting lignin from the mild ball-milled wood with mild alkaline organic solvent was more efficient than the traditional method of neutral and mild acidic dioxane extractions. The structure of the seven lignin fractions were analysed using wet chemical analysis, such as alkaline nitrobenzene oxidation, FT-IR, and solution-state 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR techniques. It is clear that the sequential mild acidic and alkaline organic solvent extractions of the mild ball-milled E. ulmoides Oliv offered significant yield improvements over the traditional signal acidolysis procedure for isolating lignin from wood, and the alkaline organic solvent extraction led to more lignin release than that of the mild acidolysis. This new procedure proposed in this study could be used for the lignin structural analysis, whereby wood is mild ball-milled and successively extracted with both mild acidic and alkaline organic solvents as well as aqueous alkalis to produce lignin fractions with high yield and purity and representing the total lignin in wood.  相似文献

    Summary Based on the fact that bark is an almost perfect water barrier and assuming that bark is impregnated with materials which aid in rendering it impermeable to water, the hydrophobic and water-repellent properties of several bark extractives were investigated. Products obtained after extraction with polar and non-polar solvents showed widely different properties. Some were extremely hydrophobic and water-repellent with a water-solid-air contact angle higher than 100°. These were the products obtained from extraction with benzene and mineral turpentine. Alcohol and acetone extractives had contact angles as low as 23° but coatings from some of these materials nevertheless had a high efficiency as water barriers. The efficiency of the various extractives as water repellents or water barriers was determined by coating wood with 10 per cent solutions of the extractives in different solvents and determining the extent to which water could be prevented from being absorbed and causing swelling of the wood and thereby reduce the dimensional changes of the wood. The extractives obtained with nonpolar solvents were extremely efficient as true water repellents while the polar aleohol extracts were far better than could be expected from their almost hydrophilic properties. Nature has therefore provided for hydrophilic film-formers combined with hydrophobic materials which act as a double line of defence against water absorption. The hydrophilic extractives, in addition, act as a bridging agent between the strongly hydrophobic extractives and the hydrophilic cell wall material.Since some of the extractives from wattle bark have excellent hydrophobic properties, and since this bark is available in large quantities as a waste product after tannins have been extracted, the utilization of certain wattle bark extractives as water repellents could be economically attractive.  相似文献

    Merbau is widely used for indoor finishing, outdoor constructions, and furniture. However, it has a disadvantage in some applications in that part of its extractives is water-soluble and can be readily leached out to stain adjacent materials. This study examined whether heat treatment could overcome the above-mentioned problem. Effects of the treatment temperature and time on water-soluble extractives and color changes of merbau heartwood were studied. CIELAB ΔL *, Δa *b *, and ΔE * parameters and absorbance spectra were used to evaluate color change and water-soluble extractive solutions, respectively. The results show that heat treatment is an efficient technique to overcome the problem caused by water-soluble extractives of merbau heartwood. Surface color of the treated samples tends to become darker and color of the extractive solution becomes fading to transparent when the treatment temperature and time increased. The absorbance of UV light decreases in intensity and the dominant absorption peak appears around 350 nm when the treatment temperature and time increase. The optimized parameters of treatment temperature and time are 170 °C and 4 h. Modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity of the heat treated samples under the optimized parameters decrease by 29.6 and 12.9 %, respectively, compared with those of the untreated samples.  相似文献

    Abstract

    In this study, two different methods were used to produce thermally modified wood. One was carried out in a typical kiln drying chamber using superheated steam (SS) and the other used pressurized steam in an autoclave cylinder (PS). Overall, both processes followed the same principles and the wood was not treated with any chemicals. Two wood species were studied, Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies). Treatments in the autoclave were carried out under pressure using temperatures of 160°C, 170°C and 180°C. Temperatures of 190°C and 212°C were used in treatments in the chamber at normal air pressure. The colour was measured using L*C*H colour space. Results for both species showed that similar L* (lightness) can be reached at lower (20–30°C) temperatures using PS compared with SS treatment. The hue angle of PS-treated wood was smaller than that of SS-treated wood. No significant difference in C* (chroma) was detected. The difference in E value between PS- and SS-treated wood was smaller for Norway spruce than for Scots pine. The residual moisture content was about 10% higher in wood treated by the PS process compared with the SS process.  相似文献

    Thermal modification of wood is an environment-friendly alternative method for improving several properties of wood without the use of chemicals. This paper deals with the examination of color and chemical changes in spruce (Picea abies L.) and oak wood (Quercus robur F.) that occur due to thermal treatment. The thermal modification was performed at 160, 180, and 210 °C according to thermowood process. The color changes were measured by the spectrophotometer and described in the L*a*b* color system. Chemical changes were examined by wet chemistry methods, infrared spectroscopy and liquid chromatography. During the experiment, oak samples showed smaller color changes than spruce samples at all temperature values. During thermal modification, the content of cellulose, lignin, and extractives increases; however, the hemicellulose content drops by 58.85% (oak) and by 37.40% (spruce). In addition to deacetylation, new carbonyl and carboxyl groups are formed as a result of oxidation. Bonds in lignin (mainly β-O-4) and methoxyl groups are cleaved, and lignin is condensed at higher temperatures.  相似文献

    Rigid polyvinyl chloride–wood flour composite lumber containing either pine or maple wood flour and pine and maple lumber was subjected to accelerated weathering according to the ASTM Standard G 53 protocol. Non-weathered and weathered surfaces of all specimens were analyzed using colorimetric methods, reflectance infrared Fourier transform and Raman spectroscopic techniques. In the FT-IR spectra, conjugated ketones (1,744 cm?1) of lignin as evidenced by their skeletal vibrations (1,560–1,500 cm?1) and stretching (1,440–1,500 cm?1) were reduced in weathered specimens. Cellulose was largely unaffected by weathering. C–O bending vibrations at 1,040 cm?1 from holocellulose in pine specimens and intensity bands at 1,125–1,090 and 1,360 cm?1 (C–O stretching and O–H bending from cellulose) in the maple and wood–plastic composite (WPC)-maple specimens were unaffected. A band at 1,650 cm?1 became prominent after weathering of both pine and maple WPC specimens which is due to C=C–C=C stretching vibration of weathered PVC portion of the specimen. Raman shifts at 530 and 840–900 cm?1 are attributed to C–O and C–C–O stretching in cellulose (remain unchanged). The role of extractives in weathering of pine is shown by the disappearance of Raman shifts at 392 and 434 cm?1 (C=C deformations in pine extractives) in weathered pine. One-Way ANOVA, between-group designs showed significant effect on brightness (L*), redness (a*) and yellowness (b*) for all treatments.  相似文献

    Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) lumber is known to have a large variability in final moisture content (MCf) and is difficult to dry. This study assessed the capability of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict the MCf of individual wood samples. An ANN model was developed based on initial moisture content, basic density, annual ring orientation, annual ring width, heartwood ratio and lightness (L * in the CIE L * a * b * system). The performance of the ANN model was compared with a principal component regression (PCR) model. The ANN model showed good agreement with the experimentally measured MCf with a higher correlation coefficient (r) and a lower root mean square error (RMSE) than the PCR model, demonstrating the importance of nonlinearity of the variables and the higher capability of the ANN model than the PCR model. By adding redness (a * ) and yellowness (b * ) and drying time to the input variables of ANNs, r and RMSE values were improved to 0.98 and 1.2 % for the training data set, and 0.85 and 2.2 % for the testing data set, respectively. Although the developed ANNs are available under the limited conditions of this study, our results suggest that the ANNs proposed offer reliable models and powerful prediction capability for the MCf, even though wood properties vary considerably and their complex interrelations are not fully elucidated.  相似文献

    Vibrational properties of wood are affected by several parameters, of which extractives can be one of the most important ones. Wood for European musical instruments has been often studied, but traditional Middle Eastern ones had been left unnoticed. In this study white mulberry (Morus alba L.), the main material for long-necked lutes in Iran, was extracted by five solvents of various polarities (water included). Free-free bar forced vibrations were used to measure longitudinal (L) loss tangent (tanδ), storage (elastic) modulus (E′) and specific modulus (E′/γ) in the acoustic range. Their anisotropy between the 3 axes of orthotropy was determined by dynamic mechanical analysis. Native wood had a quite low E L′/γ but its tanδ was smaller than expected, and the anisotropy of tanδ and E′/γ was very low. Removal of extractives caused tanδ to increase and moduli to decrease. Acetone, the most effective solvent on damping despite a moderate extraction yield, increased tanδ L by at least 20% but did not modify E′/γ as much. When used successively, its effects masked those of solvents used afterwards. Anisotropy of E′/γ was nearly unchanged after extraction in methanol or hot water, while tanδ was much more increased in R than in T direction. Results suggest that in white mulberry, damping is governed more by nature and localization of extractives rather than by their crud abundance.  相似文献
