The body weight of horses is an interesting variable for horse owners, as well as for veterinarians. It is useful to have methods of estimation like weight tape or formula, rather than visual estimation, when a weight scale is not available. Different methods of weight estimation exist for adult horses, but to date, there has been no validation of these methods in Icelandic horses. Therefore, three different methods of weight determination (weight scale, weight tape, and weight formula) were compared in this study to investigate whether it is possible to obtain reliable weight measurements of Icelandic horses by using an estimation method. Both the weight pursuant to weight tape and pursuant to weight formula showed no significant differences (P = 1.00 and P = 0.37, respectively) from the actual weight. The correlation between estimated and actual weights was r = 0.94 for weight tape and r = 0.93 for weight formula. However, the differences between the estimated and actual weights were smallest when estimated using an adjusted weight formula: weight (kg) = girth² × length (both in cm)/11,400. In conclusion, the body weight of Icelandic horses can be estimated from the measurements of body girth and length, and weight tape also seems to be a suitable method.  相似文献

Equine obesity is increasing in prevalence, and weight loss diets are frequently recommended for these horses. However, there are also management situations in which horses are deemed to be too thin. To monitor the efficacy of weight change programs, estimates of body fat are often made. There are several systems available to estimate body fat, and there are benefits and challenges to using each method. The objective of this study was to compare four different methods of estimating body fat in Thoroughbred horses. In 14 mature Thoroughbred horses, relationships among body condition score (BCS), morphometric measurements, ultrasonic measures of subcutaneous fat depots, and estimation of total body fat (BFD) via measurement of total body water through deuterium oxide dilution were evaluated. Body condition scores ranged from 4.5 to 6.5 on a 9-point scale. Body condition score, heart girth-to-body weight ratio, and BFD were all positively correlated with each other (P < .05). Subcutaneous fat depth at the tailhead tended to be positively related to BFD when only horses with BCS ≥ 5 were included (P = .0680). These data suggest that BCS remains a simple means of monitoring adiposity in mature horses in moderate condition. Tailhead fat depots may become useful for monitoring changes in body fat in Thoroughbreds with a BCS above 5, although more work with animals of higher adiposity is required and at different times of year.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the correlation between plasma alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) concentration and body mass index (BMI) in healthy horses. ANIMALS: 82 healthy horses. PROCEDURE: Plasma alpha-MSH concentration was determined by radioimmunoassay. At the time blood samples were collected, body condition scores (BCS) were determined and measurements of girth circumference, body length, and height were obtained. Weight was estimated by use of the following formula: estimated weight (kg) = [girth (cm)2 x length (cm)]/11,877. Body mass index was calculated as estimated weight (kg)/height (m)2. RESULTS: A correlation was found between BMI and BCS (rs = 0.60 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.44 to 0.731). A weak correlation was found between plasma alpha-MSH concentration and BMI (rs = 0.25 [95% CI, 0.03 to 0.45]) and BCS (rs = 0.26 [95% CI, 0.04 to 0.46]). A correlation was found between plasma alpha-MSH concentration and BMI in horses > or = 10 years old (rs = 0.49 [95% CI, 0.20 to 0.69]) but not in horses < 10 years old (rs = -0.04). Horses in the upper quartile of BMI had significantly greater plasma alpha-MSH concentration (median, 9.1 pmol/L; range, 2.0 to 95.3 pmol/L) than horses in the lowest quartile of BMI (median, 70 pmol/L; range, 3.6 to 15.7 pmol/L). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A correlation exists between plasma alpha-MSH concentration and BMI in horses. Further study is required to determine whether melanocortin receptor defects underlie this correlation or, alternately, whether plasma alpha-MSH concentration is simply a correlate of adiposity.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo examine the relationship between body mass and thoracic dimensions on arterial oxygen tensions (PaO2) in anaesthetized horses and ponies positioned in dorsal recumbency.Study designProspective clinical study.AnimalsThirty six client-owned horses and ponies, mean [±SD (range)] age 8.1 ± 4.8 (1.5–20) years and mean body mass 467 ± 115 (203–656) kg.MethodsBefore general anaesthesia, food and water were withheld for 12 and 1 hours respectively. Body mass (kg), height at the withers (H), thoracic circumference (C), thoracic depth (length between dorsal spinous process and sternum; D), thoracic width (between point of shoulders; W), and thoracic diagonal length (point of shoulder to last rib; L) were measured. Pre-anaesthetic medication was with intravenous (IV) romifidine (0.1 mg kg−1). Anaesthesia was induced with an IV ketamine (2.2 mg kg−1) and diazepam (0.05 mg kg−1) combination and maintained with halothane in 1:1 oxygen:nitrous oxide (N2O) mixture. Animals were positioned in dorsal recumbency and allowed to breathe spontaneously. Nitrous oxide was discontinued after 10 minutes, and arterial blood samples obtained and analysed for gas tensions at 15, 30 and 60 minutes after connection to the anaesthetic breathing circuit. Data were analysed using anova and Pearson's correlation co-efficient.ResultsThe height per unit body mass (H kg−1) and thoracic circumference per unit body mass (C kg−1) correlated strongly (r = 0.85, p < 0.001 and r = 0.82, p < 0.001 respectively) with arterial oxygen tensions (PaO2) at 15 minutes.ConclusionsThere is a strong positive correlation between H kg−1 and C kg−1 and PaO2 after 15 minutes of anaesthesia in halothane-anaesthetized horses positioned in dorsal recumbency.Clinical relevanceReadily obtained linear measurements (height and thoracic circumference) and body mass may be used to predict the ability of horses to oxygenate during anaesthesia.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine models which will be used for the estimation of adult live weights based on some body measurements using multiple regression model in Karya sheep of different age groups. Animal material of the study consisted of a total of 215 Karya sheep. Least squares means for live weight, body length, rump height, withers height, back height, chest depth, chest girth, and chest width of Karya sheep in Adnan Menderes University Group Sheep Breeding Program elite flock and breeder flocks were found as 47.24 kg, 67.08, 68.29, 68.58, 66.97, 30.04, 93.24, and 18.29 cm, respectively. Karya ewes were put into five categories according to ages (2–6 years). High positive phenotypic correlation coefficients were observed between live weight and body measurements of animals in different age groups (2–6 years). Among the formed multiple regression models, the highest coefficients of determination (R 2) were obtained from the models formed for body length or body length and chest girth together (R 2?=?0.79, R 2?=?0.87). It is concluded that live weight of Karya sheep can be estimated with a high accuracy using some body measurements and statistical methods.  相似文献

In order to predict the body weight of grass cutters from linear body measurements, the weights and measurements of 50 intensively managed female grass cutters aged 5 months were fitted into linear, quadratic and cubic regression models. Highly significant (p?<?0.01) R 2 values ranging from 74 to 98 % were obtained indicating that all body measurements were good predictors of body weight. Although quadratic and cubic models gave slightly higher R 2 values than linear models, it is recommended that farmers should use a simple linear equation based on tail length or heart girth to predict the body weight of their grass cutters. The recommended equations are (weight in kg)?=?0.47?+?0.08 (tail length in cm) and (weight in kg)?=?0.32?+?0.07 (heart girth in cm).  相似文献

Omega-3 (n-3; ω-3) fatty acids (FA) are often included in the diet for their potential health benefits. However, because oxidative potential is increased with the degree of unsaturation in vitro, polyunsaturated FA such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3) may be at increased risk of lipid peroxidation. We aimed to determine the effects of dietary n-3 FA supplementation on antioxidant status and lipid peroxidation in yearling horses. Quarter Horses (mean ± SEM; 14.6 ± 0.2 mo) were randomly assigned to receive no n-3 FA supplementation (CON; n = 6) or 60 mg n-3/kg body weight from milled flaxseed (FLAX; n = 6) or encapsulated fish oil (FISH; n = 6). All horses received a basal diet of mixed grain concentrate fed individually at 1.5% body weight (dry matter basis) and ad libitum bahiagrass pasture forage. Blood samples were obtained before and after 70 d of supplementation to evaluate vitamin E, selenium, lipids, antioxidant status, and oxidative stress. Data were analyzed using a mixed model ANOVA with repeated measures. Supplementation with n-3 FA did not reduce serum vitamin E or Se and, in fact, elevated (P ≤ 0.0003) vitamin E status in FISH horses. At day 70, serum triglycerides were lower in FISH and FLAX horses than CON horses (P ≤ 0.02) and F2-isoprostanes were lower in FISH than CON horses (P = 0.0002). Dietary n-3 FA had no effect on cholesterol, reduced and oxidized glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances. In growing horses fed to meet their vitamin E requirements, supplementation with 60 mg n-3/kg body weight did not negatively affect vitamin E status or promote lipid peroxidation. Elevated vitamin E status in horses fed FISH, coupled with lower serum F2-isoprostanes, further suggest that the longer-chain, highly unsaturated n-3 FA, EPA and DHA, may actually attenuate lipid peroxidation.  相似文献

ObjectivesTo investigate the relationship of heart rate (HR) and ECG time intervals to body weight (BWT) in healthy horses and ponies. We hypothesized that HR and ECG time intervals are related to BWT.Animals250 healthy horses of >30 breeds; 5.5 (1–30) y [median (range)]; 479 (46–1018) kg.MethodsProspective study. Standard base-apex ECGs were recorded while the horses were standing quietly in a box stall. Mean HR over 15 s was calculated and RR interval, PQ interval, QRS duration, and QT interval were measured by a single observer.QT was corrected for differences in heart rate using Fridericia's formula (QTcf = QT/3√RR). The relationship between ECG variables and BWT, age, sex, and RR interval was assessed using multivariate backward stepwise regression analyses. Goodness of fit of the model was improved when using log(BWT) compared to BWT. Body weight was overall the strongest predictor of HR and ECG time intervals. Therefore, only log(BWT) was included as an independent variable in the final model. The level of significance was p = 0.05.ResultsHR (R2 = 0.21) showed a significant negative relationship and PQ (R2 = 0.53), QRS (R2 = 0.23), QT (R2 = 0.14), and QTcf (R2 = 0.02) showed significant positive relationships to log(BWT).ConclusionsSmall equine breeds undergoing routine ECG recordings have slightly faster heart rates and shorter ECG time intervals compared to larger equine breeds. Although the magnitude of absolute differences may be small, body weight needs to be considered among other factors when comparing HR and ECG time intervals to normal ranges in horses.  相似文献

Despite being largely studied as models of equine nutrition, few published data exist on actual nutritional requirements of Miniature horses. Small equines are particularly prone to obesity, insulin resistance, and the metabolic disorders for which these are risk factors. Improper feed rationing, overfeeding in particular, puts horses at risk for these metabolic problems. Feed manufacturers, however, generally supply feeding recommendations for horses weighing ≥360 kg, whereas the average Miniature horse weighs around 100 kg. Lack of nutritional guidelines for small equines makes it difficult for owners to properly estimate the amount of hay and grain to feed their Miniature horse. The purpose of this study was to determine whether feeding recommendations provided by feed manufacturers for average-sized horses could be linearly extrapolated to Miniature horses. This study surveyed nutritional management of 12 mature Miniature horses that represented the ideal body condition of the breed. Each horse’s hay, grain, and pasture intake was recorded and the average daily digestible energy (DE) intake was calculated from those data. The daily DE intake of the surveyed horses was compared with the extrapolated recommendations published by several different sources. When linearly extrapolated to fit the body weight of a Miniature horse, recommendations significantly (P < .002) misestimated the amount of daily DE that the surveyed horses were consuming. The majority of recommendations overestimated the DE consumed by the Miniature horses per day. However, one source that was designed specifically for Miniature horses, severely (P < .001) underestimated their required DE.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to determine the size of the medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes in apparently healthy dogs using ultrasonography and to investigate relationships between body weight (1.8-59 kg), age (1.0-15 years), and medial retropharyngeal lymph node sizes (width, height, and length). The sample population consisted of 100 apparently healthy, volunteered, adult dogs. The data were normally distributed, thus mean, SD, and Pearson's correlation were used. Repeatability of ultrasound measures was assessed as the percentage of differences between duplicate measures that were within 2 SDs of the differences: all measures were at least 93% repeatable (differences typically were < or = 0.25 cm and always < 1 cm). No difference between sexes was observed. The medial retropharyngeal lymph node increased in size with increased body weight (r = 0.46 to 0.59) and decreased in size with increased age (r = -0.30 to -0.50). Although statistically significant, the actual variation is not likely clinically important due to the small range of sizes, measurement error, and various combinations of age and body weight. Therefore, regardless of body weight or age, the average width is 1.0 cm, height is 0.5 cm, and length is 2.5 cm and maximum width is 2 cm, height is 1 cm, and length is 5 cm. Based on the maximal difference between duplicate measures (with some exception), any change > or = 0.4 cm with width or height, or > or = 1.0 cm in length, in a follow up measurement probably represents a true biological change rather than measurement error.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo compare tidal volume estimations obtained from Respiratory Ultrasonic Plethysmography (RUP) with simultaneous spirometric measurements in anaesthetized, mechanically ventilated horses.Study designProspective randomized experimental study.AnimalsFive experimental horses.MethodsFive horses were anaesthetized twice (1 week apart) in random order in lateral and in dorsal recumbency. Nine ventilation modes (treatments) were scheduled in random order (each lasting 4 minutes) applying combinations of different tidal volumes (8, 10, 12 mL kg?1) and positive end-expiratory pressures (PEEP) (0, 10, 20 cm H2O). Baseline ventilation mode (tidal volume = 15 mL kg?1, PEEP = 0 cm H2O) was applied for 4 minutes between all treatments. Spirometry and RUP data were downloaded to personal computers. Linear regression analyses (RUP versus spirometric tidal volume) were performed using different subsets of data. Additonally RUP was calibrated against spirometry using a regression equation for all RUP signal values (thoracic, abdominal and combined) with all data collectively and also by an individually determined best regression equation (highest R2) for each experiment (horse versus recumbency) separately. Agreement between methods was assessed with Bland-Altman analyses.ResultsThe highest correlation of RUP and spirometric tidal volume (R2 = 0.81) was found with the combined RUP signal in horses in lateral recumbency and ventilated without PEEP. The bias ± 2 SD was 0 ± 2.66 L when RUP was calibrated for collective data, but decreased to 0 ± 0.87 L when RUP was calibrated with individual data. Conclusions and clinical relevanceA possible use of RUP for tidal volume measurement during IPPV needs individual calibration to obtain limits of agreement within ± 20%.  相似文献

Different methods of estimating weight gain were compared for accuracy and utility, using the amount of error variation from fitting the residual feed intake (RFI) model. Data were collected on 1481 cattle of temperate and tropically adapted breeds, feedlot-finished for the domestic (liveweight 400 kg), Korean (520 kg), or Japanese (steers only; 600 kg) markets. Cattle were tested in 36 groups over 4 years. The aim was to estimate weight gain over the period feed intake was measured, which was at least 49 days and averaged 63 days, including time for animals to adapt to the automatic feeding system. The different estimates were derived from linear and quadratic regressions of weight over time fitted to: F1) all weighings in the feedlot and F2) all weighings in the feedlot excluding atypical records in the first few weeks following feedlot entry. More complex linear and quadratic models were also fitted to weighings when feed intake was being measured, using the amount of feed eaten on the day of weighing, and previous days, to adjust for gut fill. Finally, a random regression model including general trends in the growth of each animal and short term measurement error was fitted to dataset F2 to estimate weight gain for the period feed intake was measured. The RFI equation: feed intake=intercept(s)+βw*mean(weight0.73)+βg*weight gain+error (i.e. RFI) was fitted using the different weight gain estimates. Based on mean squared errors from fitting this equation, longer measurement periods generally resulted in more accurate estimates of weight gain. The increased accuracy from using all weight measurements in the feedlot outweighed the loss from not measuring over the desired time interval—i.e. the period for which feed intake was measured.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the sedation, analgesia, and clinical reactions induced by an intravenous combination of romifidine and butorphanol in horses. The study was conducted on six saddle horses weighing 382 to 513 kg (mean ± SD; 449 ± 54 kg) and aged 6 to 14 years. The horses each underwent three treatments: intravenous romifidine 0.1 mg/kg body weight (RM; mean dose, 4.5 mL); intravenous butorphanol 0.05 mg/kg body weight (BT; mean dose, 2.4 mL); and intravenous romifidine 0.1 mg/kg body weight plus butorphanol 0.05 mg/kg body weight (RMBT; mean dose, 7.0 mL). The order of treatments was randomized. Heart rate, arterial pressure, respiratory rate, rectal temperature, sedation, and analgesia were measured at two times before treatments, 15 minutes apart (times –15 and 0) and at 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 120, 150, and 180 minutes after drug administration. The onset of sedation was approximately 5 minutes after intravenous injection of RM and RMBT, whereas BT did not present this effect. The duration of complete sedation was approximately 60 minutes for RMBT and approximately 35 minutes for RM. The RMBT treatment provided 30 minutes and the RM treatment 20 minutes of complete analgesia. Heart rate decreased significantly (P < .05) from basal values in the RM and RMBT treatments. Only RM caused significant decreases (P < .05) in the respiratory rate. Arterial pressure did not change significantly (P > .05) in any treatment. Intravenous administration of a romifidine−butorphanol combination to horses resulted in longer duration of sedation and analgesia than administration of romifidine or butorphanol alone. These effects probably resulted from a synergistic effect of the two drugs.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to develop a simple, inexpensive, and noninvasive technique for estimating the hoof surface area (HSA) of unshod horses under field conditions. It was hypothesized that HSA in horses can be extrapolated from simple linear hoof measurements. Two linear measurements—lateromedial width and dorsoplantar width—were obtained from all four feet of 57 unshod meat-type horses. Different algorithms for determining HSA were developed. The most simple equation was HSA = (1.229 × LM)1.071 × (DP)0.772 (where LM = lateromedial width and DP = dorsoplantar width), representing a good nonlinear model with a standard deviation of error for the estimate of 5.150 and a coefficient of multiple determination of 0.9384. This formula may be helpful as a repeatable, nonintrusive, and easily performed in vivo estimation of the hoof surface of unshod horses, at least in the studied breed.  相似文献

There is little published work comparing digestibility in healthy adult versus healthy aged horses. Researchers hypothesized that there would be no differences in macronutrient digestibility between eight adult (5–12 years) and nine aged (19–28 years) horses fed three diets in a Latin square design. Seventeen stock-type mares were randomly assigned for a 5-week period to one of three diets: hay only (HAY), hay plus a starch- and sugar-rich concentrate (CHO), or hay plus a fat- (oil) and fiber-rich concentrate (FF). Each diet period comprised 3 weeks of outdoor group drylot feeding, 2 weeks of indoor stalled individual feeding, followed by a 72-hour digestibility trial including total urine and fecal collection. Feed, fecal, and/or urine samples were analyzed to determine dry matter, crude protein, fat, energy, calcium, and phosphorus apparent retention as well as apparent digestibility. Neutral detergent fiber digestibility was also determined. Mean body weight was lower in aged than in adult horses (455 ± 12 kg vs. 500 ± 13 kg; P = .02), but body condition score (BCS) did not differ between groups (aged horses, 4.8 ± 0.2 BCS and adult horses, 5.1 ± 0.2 BCS; P = .20). No age differences in digestibility, apparent digestibility, or apparent retention were seen for any of the variables measured. Based on the results of this study, total tract macronutrient digestibility appears to be similar between healthy adult and aged horses.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo determine the haemodynamic effects of halothane and isoflurane with spontaneous and controlled ventilation in dorsally recumbent horses undergoing elective surgery.Study designProspective randomized clinical trial.AnimalsTwenty-five adult horses, body mass 487 kg (range: 267–690).MethodsHorses undergoing elective surgery in dorsal recumbency were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups, isoflurane (I) or halothane (H) anaesthesia, each with spontaneous (SB) or controlled ventilation (IPPV). Indices of cardiac function and femoral arterial blood flow (ABF) and resistance were measured using transoesophageal and transcutaneous Doppler echocardiography, respectively. Arterial blood pressure was measured directly.ResultsFour horses assigned to receive isoflurane and spontaneous ventilation (SBI) required IPPV, leaving only three groups for analysis: SBH, IPPVH and IPPVI. Two horses were excluded from the halothane groups because dobutamine was infused to maintain arterial blood pressure. Cardiac index (CI) was significantly greater, and pre-ejection period (PEP) shorter, during isoflurane compared with halothane anaesthesia with both spontaneous (p = 0.04, p = 0.0006, respectively) or controlled ventilation (p = 0.04, p = 0.008, respectively). There was an association between CI and PaCO2 (p = 0.04) such that CI increased by 0.45 L minute−1m−2 for every kPa increase in PaCO2. Femoral ABF was only significantly higher during isoflurane compared with halothane anaesthesia during IPPV (p = 0.0006). There was a significant temporal decrease in CI, but not femoral arterial flow.ConclusionThe previously reported superior cardiovascular function during isoflurane compared with halothane anaesthesia was maintained in horses undergoing surgery. However, in these clinical subjects, a progressive decrease in CI, which was independent of ventilatory mode, was observed with both anaesthetic agents.Clinical relevanceCardiovascular function may deteriorate progressively in horses anaesthetized for brief (<2 hours) surgical procedures in dorsal recumbency. Although cardiovascular function is superior with isoflurane in dorsally recumbent horses, the need for IPPV may be greater.  相似文献
