The influence of colostral leukocytes on lymphocyte counts in the blood of calves and on lymphocyte responses, in particular the Concanavalin A-induced blastogenic response in vitro and the formation of antibodies against sheep erythrocytes, was investigated for four weeks postnatum using four experimental groups. The calves received either complete colostrum (COL+, n = 16), cell-depleted colostrum (COL-, n = 16), colostral cell-supplemented milk substitute (MS+, n = 7) or pure milk substitute (MS-, n = 6) during their first three days of life. In contrast to the calves fed with cell-depleted colostrum (COL-) the calves fed with complete colostrum (COL+) showed no decrease of lymphocyte numbers in the blood on the second day of life, uniform blastogenic responses to two different Concanavalin A concentrations, slightly enhanced antibody formation against sheep erythrocytes and a high spontaneous proliferation of mononuclear cells during the first week of life. In the calves fed with milk-substitute supplemented with colostral cells (MS+) a higher blastogenic response to Concanavalin A and an intensified formation of antibodies against sheep erythrocytes was observed as compared to the MS- calves. A passage of vital colostral lymphocytes through the intestinal wall is postulated. They seem to stimulate and regulate the blastogenic response and enhance the T-helper cell-dependent formation of antibodies against sheep erythrocytes in calves.  相似文献

The influence of colostral leukocytes on the bactericidity of whole blood of calves against a strain of E. coli and on the activities of haemolytic complement and interferon-alpha (the antiviral activity of sera resisting an acidic treatment at pH 2 for 6 h) in the serum was investigated during a period of 4 weeks using 4 experimental groups. The calves received either complete colostrum (COL+, n = 16), cell-depleted colostrum (COL-, n = 16), cell-supplemented milk substitute (MS+, n = 7) or pure milk substitute (MS-, n = 6) during their first three days of life. The bactericidity of whole blood of the COL+ group was significantly higher on the second and third days of life while the activity of haemolytic complement was lower after the first week as compared to the COL- group. No interferon-alpha was detectable in the sera of both COL groups. The bactericidity of the MS groups was significantly lower than that of the COL groups after the first day of life. It was significantly lower in the MS+ group after one week of life while the activity of haemolytic complement was higher than that of the MS- group. Three out of 5 MS- and only one out of 7 MS+ calves had low titres of interferon-alpha in their sera on the third day. Three out of 6 MS- calves died and 5 out of 7 MS+ animals. The mean day of death was 4.0 in the MS- and 8.4 in the MS+ group. Based on the in vitro results of this and the previous three communications it can be concluded that leukocytes which are an integral part of normal bovine colostrum, influence immunological reactions of the calf and that they may enhance its defence against infection. Colostral leukocytes in the absence of humoral components of the colostrum are not able to prevent fatal losses in the calves due to natural infection, although their influence on immune responses of the calves was detectable in vitro.  相似文献

The influence of colostral leukocytes on the concentration of immunoglobulins and antibodies against an enterotoxigenic strain of E. coli in the sera of newborn calves was investigated for four weeks using four experimental groups. The calves received either complete colostrum (COL-, n = 16), cell-supplemented milk substitute (MS+, n = 7) or pure milk substitute (MS-, n = 6) during the first three days of life. The cows were not specifically immunized. The sera of the COL+ calves had significantly higher concentrations of antibodies against E. coli mainly of IgG1 specificity on the second day of life as compared to those of the COL-. The sera of the COL+ calves contained significantly more IgM on days 2 and 5 and slightly more IgA during the first week. Both COL groups had equal concentrations of serum IgG. It appears that colostral leukocytes which are an integral part of the colostrum enhance the passive immunity of the neonatal calf, especially in regard of antibodies and immunoglobulin classes which are essential for intestinal immunity. The concentration of IgM in the sera of the MS+ calves was reduced, that of IgG did not rise to appreciable amounts; the IgA synthesis started one week later as compared to the MS- group. The administration of isolated colostral cells led to an impairment of the natural active immunization.  相似文献

Absorption and Synthesis of Immunoglobulins G in Newborn Calves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Newborn calves (n=19) got 4.5 liters of pooled colostrum within three feedings in the first 14 hours post natum (p.n.). The immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) and IgG2 concentrations in the colostrum pool were 54.9 mg/ml and 4.2 mg/ml. The precolostral serum IgG concentrations in calves were 0.15 mg/ml (IgG1; SD 0.24) and 0.06 mg/ml (IgG2; SD 0.14). The highest serum IgG levels p.n. were measured 12 hours after the first colostrum feeding (9.3 mg IgG1/ml (SD 4.0), 0.8 mg IgG1/ml (SD 1.0). Thereafter, the mean IgG1 level was reduced continuously to the significant lowest concentration of 4.9 mg/ml (SD 2.3) at day 28 p.n. and then increased continuously to the significant highest concentration of 9.0 mg/ml (SD 4.8) on day 77 p.n. The mean concentration of IgG2 was lowest on day 11 p.n. (0.5 mg/ml; SD 0.4) and highest on day 77 p.n. (1.2 mg/ml; SD 0.6).
In blood from 198 calves, housed in Germany and sampled between day 4 and 6 p.n., the IgG concentration averaged 4.9 mg/ml serum (SD 3.3). From 93 dams of these calves a sample of the first colostrum could be obtained showing a mean concentration of 22.0 mg IgG/ml (SD 11.0). IgG levels in the colostrum and in the serum showed a correlation of r=0.37.
In Kenia IgG levels of three week old calves from two farms were measured. The calves were always with mother for the first 24 hours. The mean serum IgG concentrations of the calves were 22.5 mg IgG/ml (n=7, SD 6.8) and 15.2 mg IgG/ml (n=15; SD 6.3). Comparing to the serum IgG levels found in calves of our studies in Germany there were significant differences.  相似文献

During examination of lysozyme concentration we have found out that 90.3% of calf sera had the lysozyme concentration to 0.5 microgram . ml-1, 5.7% of sera showed zero values and only 4.0% of sera values from 0.5 to 1.4 microgram . ml-1. A higher lysozyme content was recorded in sera of calves up to the age of ten days in comparison with sera of calves after the second week post natum. The lysozyme concentration showed in calves a two-phase increase in the age dynamics up to the seventh to eighth week of life with a peak in second and fifth to eighth week of age. The increase rate in the first phase and the time onset of increase in the second phase were in negative, and/or positive relation to the level of immunity obtained through colostrum. The lysozyme concentration in serum of dairy cows was on fourth day post partum as much as ten times higher than in serum of their progenies 48 hours after parturition. In first colostrum the lysozyme concentration fluctuated within the range of 0.15 to 0.65 microgram X ml-1, with an average of 0.30 microgram X ml-1. The concentration of lysozyme and immunoglobulins of the IgG and IgM class in colostrum showed a contrary trend in first and second milk yield, with a tendency towards increase for lysozyme and towards decrease for immunoglobulins.  相似文献

Effect of colostrum intake on diarrhoea incidence in new-born calves   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
In a survey which lasted one year and included data of 73 dairy cows with their calves, colostrum immunoglobulin G (IgG) of 22 primiparous cows and serum IgG of their calves were lower than the corresponding IgG levels of 51 multiparous cows and their calves. Serum IgG concentration was not correlated with diarrhoea incidence. Although there were no seasonal differences in the IgG concentration of colostrum and calf serum, neonatal diarrhoea incidence was higher in calves which were born in winter than in calves which were born in summer (P < 0.01). Thus the high diarrhoea incidence in winter was not a consequence of an insufficient IgG transfer to the calves. The 60 calves of the second study were fed colostrum on the first day of life. From the second to the tenth day 28 experimental calves received milk and 0.5 l of surplus colostrum of the first and second milking twice a day, whereas 32 control calves received milk only twice a day. Two of the 28 experimental and 11 of the 32 control calves suffered from diarrhoea during the first ten days of life (P < 0.05). These results show that the ingestion of surplus colostrum in addition to milk after the first day of life protects the new-born calf against infectious diarrhoea.  相似文献

In the presence of milk, bovine polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) assumed a polarized shape, a feature of motile cells, and their adherence to plastic was augmented. Milk enhanced the phagocytosis of glass- or plastic-adherent Streptococcus agalactiae. In contrast, PMN were not stimulated by colostrum.  相似文献

Forty-three calves of various age from the day of birth to the age of three months were subjected to the 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) particle phagocytosis test. Significant differences in the phagocytic activity of blood leucocytes were recorded, all depending on age. New-born calves had very low phagocytic activity: only 16.5% of the leucocytes were found to be phagocytic, the phagocytic index being 0.39. A rapid increase in phagocytic activity was recorded during the subsequent days. At the age of three days 43% of the leucocytes of the calves were phagocytic. A decrease in phagocytic activity was found on the sixth to seventh day, and another increase was recorded only from the age of three to four weeks of age. No such changes in the development of phagocytic activity were observed in the calves reared without colostrum administration. Low values were maintained for a longer time after birth without the typical increase on the third to fifth day. Phagocytic activity increased in the zero-colostrum calves experimentally infected with rotavirus.  相似文献

Subclinical ketosis of dry cows was studied as to its effect on the composition of colostrum and on the health condition and selected clinico-biochemical parameters in the new-born calves of these cows. The experimental group consisted of eight cows with ketonuria and their calves. The control group consisted of six cows without ketonuria and their new-born calves. Calves of both groups were reared in similar conditions. Colostrum samples were taken from the first milking and then from the milking 24 hours after parturition. The blood of the calves was sampled before the intake of colostrum and 24 hours after birth. The concentration of ketone bodies, particularly beta-hydroxybutyrate, was much higher in the colostrum of both groups of cows than in the blood (62.6 mg total ketone bodies per 1 litre of the first colostrum of the cows of the experimental group). The concentration of ketone bodies slightly increased after parturition. The cows with ketonuria secreted into colostrum a larger amount of oxidated ketone bodies. Colostrum quality was good in both groups. Decreased viability was not recorded during the clinical examination of the calves after birth. The level of total ketone bodies in the blood of pre-colostral calves in the experimental group was 10.4 mg per litre (a much lower concentration than in blood of their dams), and exhibited no appreciable change after taking in the colostrum. The blood of calves born to cows with ketonuria contained significantly higher amounts of oxidated ketone bodies. No correlation was demonstrated between the contents of ketone bodies in the blood of cows, in the blood of calves, and in the colostrum. The calves of the experimental group were found to have a significantly higher AST activity in plasma, as compared with the control group. Twenty-four hours after birth, the quantity of immunoglobulins in the blood serum was significantly lower in the calves of the experimental group. Thanks to good attendance and hygiene, the morbidity did not increase and no losses occurred.  相似文献

Cow colostrum is rich in insulin-like growth factors IGF-I and II, thus the dietary effects of recombinant human (rh) rhIGF-I on the newborn were of interest. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of dietary IGF-I upon selected blood components and gut absorptive development. Calves were blocked by birth weight and fed two times per d for a total of four times with the initial restricted diet. The initial feeding was 1.5 l and the remaining three feedings were at 2 1 with one of three experimental diets: 1) milk replacer plus isolated colostrum derived globulins (MR), 2) same as 1 above plus 750 ng/ml rhIGF-I (MR+), 3) pooled cow colostrum (COL). Thereafter, all animals received only milk replacer at 5% of body weight (BW)/feeding two times per d with only treatment 2 having continued addition of 750 ng/ml rhIGF-I until experimental completion at 6 to 7 d after birth. At feeding three, animals were fed D-xylose (0.5 g/kg BW) and 5,000 U of bovine kidney membrane γ-glutamyl transferase as indicators of gut absorptive capacity. Colostrum-fed animals received 5,000 U of natural occurring γ-glutamyl transferase activity in the 1.5 l first feeding. Blood samples taken over time were collected and saved as frozen plasma. All diets were analyzed for nutrient composition and endogenous levels of test hormones. Colostrum fed calves had greater globulin concentration (P < 0.01) than MR or MR+ fed calves. Recombinant hIGF-I feeding had no effect (MR vs. MR+) upon total protein, albumin or globulin blood levels. Absorption of colostrum γ-glutamyl transferase at first feeding resulted in a peak total blood U of 4.5% of that fed. Although enzyme absorption was greatly reduced by the third feeding (0.5% of total fed), MR+ fed calves exhibited no significant difference in enzyme absorption when compared with the controls (MR vs. MR+). However, pharmacokinetic analysis of D-xylose absorption at the third feeding showed diet effect upon absorption of D-xylose. Dietary rhIGF-I may change development or activity of sugar transporters and also may alter absorption of macromolecules (closure) in neonatal calves.  相似文献

It has been established that maternal leukocytes, conditioned by the mammary environment, cross the neonatal gut and circulate in the newborn calf. However, the impact of these cells on the development of neonatal immunity remains to be determined. This study examined the effects of maternal colostral leukocytes on development and maturation of neonatal adaptive immunity by examining the expression of surface markers on neonatal lymphocytes. At birth, neonatal calves were fed whole colostrum, or colostrum that had the maternal cells removed (cell-free colostrum), from their respective dams. Peripheral blood samples were collected at regular intervals over the first 4 weeks of life and lymphocytes were evaluated for surface expression of cellular markers. The results of these studies demonstrated that calves receiving whole colostrum had fewer CD11a positive lymphocytes in circulation during the first 2 weeks of life and this marker was expressed at a lower density than calves receiving cell-free colostrum. In addition, calves receiving whole colostrum also had a higher percentage of lymphocytes expressing the activation markers CD25 and CD26 by 7 days after birth. During the first week of life, lymphocytes from calves receiving whole colostrum had a higher density of MHC class I expression on their surfaces than cells from calves receiving cell-free colostrum. In general, these results indicate that transfer of maternal cells with colostrum allows for more rapid development of lymphocytes and maternal cells appeared to enhance their activation.  相似文献

Age-dependent changes in blood concentrations of four bovine acute phase proteins (APPs), serum amyloid A (SAA), lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP), haptoglobin (Hp) and alpha(1)-acid glycoprotein (AGP), were examined using two groups of newborn dairy calves. APP concentrations were monitored for either 3 weeks (Group A, n=13) or 2 months (Group B, n=13) after birth. Blood was collected at day 0-1 (Group A only), day 3 and then once or twice weekly until the end of the study. The possible transfer of colostral SAA as a source of SAA in the offspring was investigated by determining SAA isoforms in the serum of calves and in colostrum of their dams. Serum concentrations of all four APPs were high after birth, and concentrations showed a gradual decrease during the first 3 weeks of life. The lowest concentrations were at 21 days of age, after which concentrations stabilized. The calves synthesized adult SAA isotypes, and circulating SAA was not derived from colostrum. The results indicated that post-partum elevation of APPs is associated with the birth process and/or factors in colostrum and not necessarily with disease-related processes. This stresses the importance of considering a calf's age when interpreting APP concentrations in serum.  相似文献

Although it has been established that maternal leukocytes traffic from colostrum into the neonatal circulation, the effects of these cells on neonatal immunity are only beginning to be understood. This study examined the effects of maternal colostral leukocytes on development and maturation of neonatal antigen presenting cells. At birth, groups of neonatal calves received whole or cell-free colostrum (CFC) from their respective dams. Peripheral blood samples were obtained over the first 4 weeks of life, and expression of surface markers associated with cellular activation and physiological stress were monitored on monocyte lineage cells. Calves receiving cell-free colostrum at birth expressed elevated levels of CD11a, CD11c, and CD14, compared to calves receiving whole colostrum (C). Calves receiving cell-free colostrum had an elevated number of monocytes in the peripheral blood during the first 2 weeks of life, however, these cells expressed lower levels of expression of CD25 and MHC class I compared to calves receiving whole colostrum. The most significant differences in marker expression occurred within the first 7 days of life.  相似文献

Blood pH, total plasma carotene, plasma vitamin A fractions and some plasma proteins were determined in newborn calves (n = 38) and their dams. Calves were assigned to one of two groups according to their blood pH immediately after birth: group 1 (normal) with pH above 7.2 (n = 27) and group 2 (slightly acidotic) with pH 7.0 to 7.2 (n = 11). The difference between the neonatal blood pH values of the two groups immediately post partum disappeared 24 h after birth. The blood pH of the dams was normal. The extremely low plasma carotene concentration (group 1: 32.7 micrograms/l; group 2:20.5 micrograms/l) and the low plasma globulin fractions (group 1:19.6 g/l; group 2:19.2 g/l) immediately after birth were elevated by the intake of colostrum. There was no significant change in plasma vitamin A fractions (retinol, retinyl ester) during the early postnatal period (3 days post partum) in newborn calves. The acid-base balance of newborn calves does not have any influence on the physiological alterations of plasma vitamin A, carotene and some plasma proteins during the first three days of life.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine effects of genotype and selected environmental factors on colostrum production, intake, and efficiency in the cattle. The investigations were conducted on 67 dam-calf pairs. All cows were of Polish Holstein-Friesian breed, the Black-and-White variety (PHF-HO), whereas calves were sired by bulls of the following breeds: PHF-HO, Polish Holstein-Friesian of the Red-and-White variety (PHF-RW), Jersey (JE), Montbéliarde (MB) and Limousine (LI). The colostrum was collected from cows and offered to calves "from bucket" thrice a day. The amount of produced colostrum considerably exceeded the ability of its consumption by calves. Low share of HF genes in the cow, older cow's age and calving in the period from January to April appeared to be favorable factors for colostrum production. Calves born to cows with low HF gene share drank more colostrum than calves originating from cows with higher gene share of this breed. Crosses with JE drank the highest amount of the colostrum in relation to body weight, while MB-sired calves drank the highest amount in absolute terms. Colostrum intake was positively correlated with the dam's age. Furthermore, it was shown that in case of the first colostrum intake the most favorable period was from May to September, while in cases of total intake in the first day of life and mean intake in the first 5 days of life it was the period from January to April. Crosses with JE were characterized by extremely high use of colostrum per unit of body weight gain.  相似文献

New-born calves, artificially fed colostrum or native colostral whey, either dried or preserved by another method, had good health and good weight gains (between 0.05 and 0.60 kg). No greater differences were observed between the groups of calves given three times the colostrum of their mothers, calves given mixed colostrum, and calves fed colostral whey powder. In all groups only individual differences in IgG content in the blood serum were observed after 48 hours from birth. Hypogammaglobulinaemia occurred in individual cases both in calves given small amounts of colostrum or colostral whey and in calves given sufficient quantities. The time that had elapsed from birth to the first drinking did not exert any greater influence upon the IgG level in the blood; the decisive factor was the amount of colostrum taken in by the calf in the first dose. The rate of the absorption of IgG1, IgG2, IgA, and IgM from colostrum and the concentration of the immunoglobulins in the serum depended on the quantity of colostrum in the first dose and were not influenced to any greater degree by the amount of colostrum given to the calves in further doses. The amount of IgG in the blood serum of calves corresponded approximately to the level of colostral antibodies to the virus PI-3. The antibodies to the virus PI-3 and small quantities of IgG were observed also in the serum to new-born calves before drinking colostrum.  相似文献

The profile and function of blood and uterine leukocytes were evaluated in 14 dairy cows that spontaneously recovered from postpartum endometritis (mild, n=6 and heavy, n=8; general health not affected). From a minimum of 2 weeks before parturition until 6 weeks postpartum, blood samples were obtained twice weekly for leukocyte counts and leukogram determination and once weekly for flow cytometry assessment of polimorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) phagocytic capacity and oxidative burst activity. Uterine fluid‐stained smears, obtained twice weekly from parturition until fluid was present in the uterus, were used for determination of the percentage of PMN, of phagocytizing PMN (phago‐PMN) and of the mean number of phagocyted bacteria per phagocytizing PMN (phagocytic index; PI). Uterine swabs were obtained twice weekly from parturition until 35 days postpartum for bacteriological examination. The time of endometritis diagnosis was similar in cows with mild or heavy endometritis but the latter cows had a significantly longer persistence of the infection and of the isolation of Gram‐negative anaerobes from the uterus. However, the effect of group (mild versus heavy) was not significant for all the blood and uterine parameters analysed. The effect of sampling day (within group effect) was significant (p<0.01 to p<0.00001) for all parameters, except for the blood monocyte count and the blood PMN phagocytic capacity, in which only a tendency for significance was observed (p<0.1). The effect of the interaction group × sampling day was significant only for the blood monocyte count. The phago‐PMN and the PI were significantly correlated (r=0.70, p<0.001). A significant correlation was also observed between the uterine fluid phago‐PMN and the blood PMN oxidative burst activity (r=?0.41, p<0.05). At the spontaneous recovery, the blood PMN oxidative burst activity was significantly higher (p<0.05) and the percentage of intrauterine phago‐PMN and the PI were significantly lower (p<0.001 and p<0.01, respectively) than at diagnosis of endometritis. These results suggest that a decrease in blood PMN oxidative burst activity until the first week postpartum could be associated with an increased susceptibility to early postpartum endometritis. The later increase in this parameter as well as the increase in the intrauterine fluid phago‐PMN and PI, might favour the spontaneous resolution of endometritis.  相似文献

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of energy contents in a dry period diets in "7+1" feeding strategy of dry cow including 7 weeks of the dry period (far-off) and 1 week of a close-up period, on colostrum quality and the immune status of calves. Forty Holstein multiparous cows were dried at 56d before the expected date of calving and were assigned to the higher energy diet group (HE; 0.69 UFL/kg DM, NDF 52% DM), or the lower energy diet group (LE; 0.61 UFL/1kg DM, NDF 56% DM). From -7d to the expected calving date up to 21 d of lactation, all cows were fed the same fresh, lactation diet. Samples of colostrum were collected within 2h after parturition and its density, dry matter content and concentrations of immunoglobulins, fat, protein, lactose, urea and somatic cell counts were measured. Calves were weighed 2 h after calving and on the 21d of life. On 3d and 21d of calves' life blood samples were collected and the concentration of IgG, IgA, IgM, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) as well as total protein and albumin concentrations were determined. Treatments had no significant effect on composition of colostrum and serum immunoglobulins and IGF-1 concentration. In both groups the weight of calves at birth was similar, still daily body weight gain during 21 day of rearing period in HE group was higher than in the LE group (P=0.05).  相似文献

The objectives of the studies were to evaluate the effect of levamisole and 1,3/1,6 glucan applied in pregnant mares on parameters of non-specific cellular and humoral immunity of foals. Eighteen mares in three experimental groups (six animals in each) and their progeny were examined. Multiparous mares, crossbreed of Polish, full-blood and Hannover lines (400-500 kg), 4-9 years old, originated from four different farms. They were kept under identical zoohygienic and nutritional conditions. The animals were randomly chosen in experimental groups. None of mares had been previously vaccinated. In group I, levamisole was injected three times at 7-day intervals at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg of body weight. Group II was injected at the same periods of time and manner with 1,3/1,6 glucan at a dose of 0.19 mg/kg of body weight, whereas mares in group III served as controls. Injection of the immunostimulators started in mares 4-6 weeks before expected parturition. Blood was taken from foals before the first dose of colostrum, then 18 and 36 h after the first dose of colostrum and on Days 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49 and 56 of life. The parameters determined in blood were reduction of NBT by PMNs, phagocytic activity, phagocytic index, test of intracellular killing and in blood sera were total protein, gamma-globulin fraction, lysozyme activity, level of IgG, IgG(T), IgM and IgA. In the first dose of colostrum taken just after parturition, specific gravity, total protein, gamma-globulin complex, lysozyme activity, level of IgG, IgG(T), IgM, IgA were determined. Colostrum of mares immunostimulated with levamisole or 1,3/1,6 glucan were characterized by a high content of IgG and IgG(T) compared to the colostrum of nonstimulated mares. The level of immunity was higher in foals from dams immunostimulated with levamisole or 1,3/1,6 glucan. Clinical examinations in neonatal and postnatal period did not show any abnormalities in these foals.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether high PaCO2 reduced apparent efficiency of IgG absorption (AEA) in calves and whether assisted ventilation of calves with high PaCO2 increased AEA. ANIMALS: 48 Holstein calves. PROCEDURES: Arterial and venous blood samples were collected 1, 13, and 25 hours after birth; an additional venous sample was collected at 37 hours after birth. Arterial samples were analyzed for PaCO2, PaO2, pH, and bicarbonate and base excess concentrations; venous samples were analyzed for plasma IgG concentrations. On the basis of 1-hour PaCO2, calves were assigned to nonrespiratory acidosis (PaCO2 < 50 mm Hg; n = 19) or respiratory acidosis (PaCO2 > or = 50 mm Hg; 29) groups. Calves in the respiratory acidosis group were assigned randomly to receive no further treatment (n = 17) or to be given 5 minutes of assisted ventilation (12). All calves received between 1.8 and 2 L of colostrum 2, 14, 26, and 38 hours after birth. Plasma volume and AEA were determined 25 hours after birth. RESULTS: 1-hour PaCO2 had no effect on AEA or on plasma IgG concentrations determined 13, 25, or 37 hours after birth. Artificial ventilation had no effect on plasma IgG concentration or AEA. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Lack of effect of 1-hour PaCO2 on AEA and IgG concentration indicated that calves compensated for moderate acid-base imbalances associated with birth. Calves born with high PaCO2 achieved adequate plasma IgG concentrations if fed an adequate amount of high-quality colostrum early in life. The effect of artificial ventilation on PaCO2 was temporary and did not increase AEA.  相似文献
