Daily net canopy photosynthesis (P n) was predicted for cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) canopies grown under different light regimes by integration of a leaf photosynthesis model developed for the light-saturated photosynthetic rate (P max), photosynthetic efficiency (α) and the degree of curvature (θ) of the leaf light–response curve. When shade was the only limiting factor, the maximum P n (P nmax) was predicted to decrease approximately linearly from 33.4 g CO2 m−2 d−1 to zero as photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) fell from full sunlight (1800 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD) to 10% of this in a fluctuating light regime. It was also predicted that at 50% transmissivity P nmax was higher for a continuous light regime (10.4 g CO2 m−2 d−1) than for a fluctuating light regime with the same intensity (8.4 g CO2 m−2 d−1). The canopy photosynthesis model was then used to predict dry matter (DM) production for cocksfoot field grown pastures under a diverse range of temperature, herbage nitrogen content and water status conditions in fluctuating light regimes. This prediction required inclusion of leaf area index and leaf canopy angle from field measurements. The model explained about 85% of the variation in observed cocksfoot DM production for a range from 6 to 118 kg DM ha−1 d−1. The proposed model improves understanding of pasture growth prediction through integration of relationships between shade limitations in fluctuating light regimes and other environmental factors that affect the canopy photosynthetic rate of cocksfoot pastures in silvopastoral systems.  相似文献

The integrated relationship in a simple mechanistic model between the critical environmental factors controlling leaf photosynthesis of understory species would be a useful tool to optimize the management of the silvopastoral systems. Individual effect of leaf temperature, water stress and light environment over net maximum photosynthetic rate (Pmax) was evaluated on Festuca pallescens leaves grown in a silvopastoral system of two Pinus ponderosa canopy covers (350 and 500 trees ha−1) and natural grassland. The aim was to integrate individual functions for Pmax against these environmental factors into a multiplicative model. We measured pre-dawn water potential (ψ pd), leaf temperature and net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (gs) and intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) as a function of photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). The highest Pmax under non-limiting conditions was 20.4 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 and was defined as standardized dimensionless Pmax s  = 1 for comparison of environmental factors. The leaf temperature function showed an optimum range between 20.2 and 21.8°C where Pmax s  = 1. Then, Pmax s declined by an average 1 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 C−1 from the optimum to 4.7 and 38.5°C. Pmax s decreased at a rate of 9.49 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 MPa−1 as water potential reaches −1.9 MPa and showed a lower slope as water potential decreased down to −4.3 MPa. The light environment was estimated from hemispherical photograph analysis. Pmax s was 20% higher in leaves of open control plants than under the maximum tree canopy cover. The simple multiplicative model accounted for 0.82 of the variation in Pmax. Such a simple mechanistic model is the first step towards a more effective decision support tool.  相似文献

Two-year-old seedlings ofPinus koraiensis, Pinus sylvestriformis andFraxinus mandshurica were treated in open-top chambers with elevated CO2 concentrations (700 μL·L−1, 500 μL·L−1) and ambient CO2 concentrations (350 μL·L−1) in Changbai Mountain from June to Sept. in 1999 and 2001. The net photosynthetic rate, dark respiration rate, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxlase (RuBPcase) activity, and chlorophyll content were analyzed. The results indicated the RuBPcase activity of the three species seedlings increased at elevated CO2 concentrations. The elevated CO2 concentrations stimulated the net photosynthetic rates of three tree species exceptP. sylvestriformis grown under 500 μL·L−1 CO2 concentration. The dark respiration rates ofP. koraiensis andP. sylvestriformis increased under concentration of 700 μL·L−1 CO2, out that ofF. mandshurica decreased under both concentrations 700 μL·L−1 and 500 μL·L−1 CO2. The seedlings ofF. mandshurica decreased in chlorophyll contents at elevated CO2 concentrations. Photosynthetic responses to a series of 1-min lightflecks (1,000μmol m−2 s−1) superimposed on a background with different duration (1, 5, and 10 min) and intensity (25 and 50μmol m−2 s−1) of low background photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) were measured in the leaves ofFagus crenata grown in a gap and understory of aFagus crenata forest in the Naeba Mountains. The two background PPFD intensities most frequently occurred in understory and gap sites respectively. The maximum net photosynthetic rate (P Nmax) and maximum stomatal conductance (g smax) were higher in the gap seedlings than in the understory seedlings. However, when the background PPFD was 25μmol m−2s−1, the net photosynthetic rate (P 25) and stomatal conductance (g s25) were almost the same between the gap and understory. When the background PPFD duration was 1-min, the net photosynthetic rate (P N ) at the end of each lightfleck increased progressively. When the background PPFD duration was 5- and 10-min, the increase inP N at the end of each lightfleck was less. This indicates that background PPFD duration is important to photosynthetic responses to lightflecks. The higher ratios ofP 25/P Nmax andg s25/g smax in the understory seedlings indicate that the understory seedlings can maintain relatively lower levels of biochemical and stomatal limitations than the gap seedlings under low light conditions. The ratios ofP N /P Nmax at the end of each lightfleck (IS) and light utilization efficiency of single lightflecks (LUE s) that showed the influence of lightflecks on carbon gain were higher in the understory seedlings than in the gap seedlings when the background PPFD was 25μmol m−2 s−1. This means that understory seedling are capable of utilizing fluctuating light more efficiently under low light conditions than the gap seedlings although the net carbon gain of single lightflecks (CG s) in the understory seedlings was not higher than that in the gap seedlings. There were no significant differences inIS andLUE s between understory seedlings at a background PPFD of 25μmol m−2 s−1 and gap seedlings at a background PPFD of 50μmol m−2 s−1. However,CG s in gap seedlings was higher than in understory seedlings. These results provide more evidence thatF. crenata acclimate to a natural light environment in respect to relative induction state at low background PPFD and can capture the fluctuating light at the same efficiency in both the gap and understory seedlings under natural light environments. Net light-saturated photosynthetic rate (Amax) of field grown cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) leaves in a radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) silvopastoral system (Canterbury, New Zealand) was measured at different times under severe shade (85–95 μmol m–2 s–1 photosynthetic photon flux density, PPFD) and in full sunlight (1900 μmol m–2 s–1 PPFD). The aim was to integrate individual functions for Amax against air temperature (2 to 37 oC), water status, expressed as pre-dawn leaf water potential (ψlp) (-0.01 to −1.6 MPa), herbage nitrogen (N) (1.5 to 5.9%), regrowth duration (20 to 60 days) and time under shade (1 to 180 min) into a multiplicative model. The highest Amax value obtained was 27.4 μmol CO2 m–2 s–1 in non-limiting conditions with full sunlight. This value was defined as standardised dimensionless Amaxs = 1 for comparison of factor effects. The canopy temperature of the cocksfoot sward was up to 7.4 oC cooler than air temperature for plants under shade. Therefore, canopy temperature was used to predict Amax. The only interaction was between time under severe shade (5% of the open PPFD) and water stress (ψlp = −0.4 to −1.3 MPa) and this was included in the model. Validation of this model indicated 78% of the variation in Amax could be accounted for using these five factors by the addition of the interaction function. This model could be used to assist the prediction of pasture growth in silvopastoral systems through incorporation into a canopy photosynthesis model. The Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana has embarked on studies to support the replanting of cacao (Theobroma cacao L) in areas, which previously carried the crop but are now degraded. A key component of the studies is to identify fast growing tree species capable of ameliorating degraded soils and ultimately providing suitable shade for cacao. A screening trial involving ten Albizia species in a randomized complete block design experiment was therefore initiated in 1996 to evaluate growth rate, leaf biomass production, carbon and nitrogen contents and decomposition rates. Over a four-year period, Albizia adenocephala, A. guachapele, A. niopoides, A. plurijuga,A. saman and A. tomentosa showed promising results, with 12.2 to 14.5 m height and between 12.4 and 22.4 cm stem diameter (DBH). Crown diameter ranged between 6.1 and 10.1 m, with light transmission through crowns averaging 50–65% of full sunlight throughout the year. Half-yearly leaf biomass production ranged between 3and 10 t ha–1, yielding between 0.07 and 0.32 t N ha–1 from each coppicing. Half-life for carbon and nitrogen release from leaves of the six species averaged 31.0 and 32.0 days respectively. This short-term release of C and N is an indication of the quality of the leaf prunings. These species can provide early ground cover, appropriate shade, N and organic matter requirements for re-establishing cacao on denuded and degraded lands. A dramatic decline in forest cover in eastern Africa along with a growing population means that timber and poles for building and fuelwood are in short supply. To overcome this shortage, the region is increasingly turning to eucalyptus. But eucalyptus raises environmental concerns of its own. Fears that it will deplete water supply, affect wildlife and reduce associated crop yields have caused many countries in the region to discourage farmers from planting this exotic. This paper is part of a series of investigations on the growth and water use efficiency of faster growing eucalyptus hybrids, which was introduced from South Africa to Kenya. The hypothesis is that the new hybrids are more efficient in using water and more suitable for the semi-arid tropics than existing eucalyptus and two popular agroforestry species. Gas exchange characteristics of juvenile Eucalyptus grandis (W. Hill ex Maiden), two eucalyptus hybrids (E. grandis × Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh.), Grevillea robusta (A. Cunn) and Cordia africana (Lam) was studied under field and pot conditions using an infrared gas analyzer was used to measure photosynthetic active radiation (PAR), net photosynthetic rate (A), stomatal conductance (g s) and transpiration rate (E) at CO2 concentrations of 360 μmol mol−1 and ambient humidity and temperature. A, E and g s varied between species, being highest in eucalyptus hybrid GC 15 (24.6 μmol m−2 s−1) compared to eucalyptus hybrid GC 584 (21.0 μmol m−2 s−1), E. grandis (19.2 μmol m−2 s−1), C. africana (17.7 μmol m−2 s−1) and G. robusta (11.1 μmol m−2 s−1). C. africana exhibited high E values (7.0 mmol m−2 s−1) at optimal soil moisture contents than G. robusta (3.9 mmol m−2 s−1) and eucalyptus (5.3 mmol m−2 s−1) in field experiment and G. robusta (3.2 mmol m−2 s−1) and eucalyptus (4.2 mmol m−2 s−1) in pot-grown trees. At very low soil moisture content, extremely small g s values were recorded in GC 15 and E. grandis (8 mmol m−2 s−1) and G. robusta (14 mmol m−2 s−1) compared to GC 584 (46.9 mmol m−2 s−1) and C. africana (90.0 mmol m−2 s−1) indicating strong stomatal control by the species. Instantaneous water use efficiency ranged between 3 and 5 μmol mmol−1 and generally decreased with decline in soil moisture in pot-grown trees but increased with declining soil moisture in field-grown trees.

Net photosynthetic rates (NPRs) of four species seedlings,Pinus koraiensis, Pinus sylvestriformis, Fraxinus mandshurica andPhellodendron amurense, were measured at different CO2 concentrations and time respectively in Changbai Mountain during the growing season in 1999. The seedlings were cultivated in open-top chambers (OTCs), located outdoors and exposed to natural sunlight. The experimental objects were divided into four groups by tree species. CO2 concentrations in chambers were kept at 500 μL·L−1 and 700 μL·L−1 and contrast chamber and contrast field were set. The results showed that the effects of elevated CO2 on NPR of the trees strongly depended on tree species and time. NPRs ofPinus koreainsis andPinus sylvestriformis seedlings increased with the rising of CO2 concentration, while that ofPhellodendron amurense andFraxinus mandshurica increased at some time and decreased at another time. Muehlewbeckia complera was introduced to China in 2002 as indoor-hanging ornamental foliage plant. The experiment of the shade tolerance for this species was carried out in different light intensities (0.14–946.00 μmol·m−2·s−1). After 40 days in experimental areas, leaf photosynthentic characteristics indexes ofM. complera in different photosynthesis active radiation (PAR) were measured with LI-COR6400 apparatus, such as the light compensation point, light saturation point, and maximum net photosynthesis rate, at the same time, the increments of total leaf area and leaf amount were measured. The results showed that the optimum light intensity range forM. complera was from 9.26 μmol·m−2·s−1 to 569.00 μmol·m−2·s−1 (463–28150 lx, relative humidity (RH) for 46–60%, temperature at 16–22°C). Under this condition, leaf photosynthetic efficiency was tiptop. AlthoughM. complera belonged to the moderate sun-adaptation plant species, the plant growth was inhibited when PAR increased to the level of 569.000 μmol·m−2·s−1 or above.M. complera could sprout new leaves in photosynthesis active radiation of 0.16–19.22 μmol·m−2·s−1 (8–961 lx), or 10 μmol·m−2·s−1 for above 6 h. The time processes of photosynthetic induction responses to various irradiances in Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) seedlings grown in open-light environments and in understory of forest were studied in an area near the Research Station of Changbai Mountain Forest Ecosystems, Jilin Province, China from July 15 to August 5, 1997. The results showed that at 200 μmol·m−2·s−1 photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and 500 μmol·m−2·s−1 PPFD, the induction time for the photosynthetic rates of understory-grown seedlings to reach 50% and 90% steady-state net photosynthetic rates was longer than that of the open-grown seedlings. The induction responses of open-growth seedlings at 500 μmol·m−2·s−1 PPFD were slower than those at 200 μmol·m−2·s−1 PPFD, but it was the very reverse for understory-growth seedlings, which indicates that the photosynthetic induction times of Korean pine seedlings grown in the understory depended on the sunfleck intensity. We analyzed the growth and photosynthetic responses of Canarium pimela K. D. Koenig (Chinese black olive) and Nephelium topengii (Merr.) H. S. Lo. (Hainan shaozi) to a light gradient to recommend better procedures for optimizing seedling establishment and growth of both species in restoration and agroforestry practices. One-month-old seedlings were exposed to four irradiance levels (46, 13, 2 and 0.2 % full sunlight) inside shade cloth covered shadehouses for 1 year. With decreased sunlight both species displayed trends of decreased relative growth rate (RGR) and leaf area (LA), and increased specific leaf area and leaf area ratio (LAR). The mean values of light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (Pmax) in 46 and 0.2 % full sunlight were 10.11 and 3.44 μmol CO2 m?2 s?1 for C. pimela and 6.26 and 3.47 μmol CO2 m?2 s?1 for N. topengii, respectively. C. pimela had higher RGR in 46 and 13 % full sunlight than in 2 and 0.2 % full sunlight. Differences in growth rates can be explained by the different values of LA, LAR and leaf mass ratio, as well as by the different values of photosynthetic saturation irradiance and net photosynthetic rate (Pmax) between the two species. Both morphological and physiological responses to shading indicate N. topengii could be rated as “very shade-tolerant,” while C. pimela could be rated as “intermediately shade-tolerant”.  相似文献

During 7 years (1979–1985) cacao harvests (beans and husks) have been recorded for the agroforestry systems ofTheobroma cacao underCordia alliodora andErythrina poeppigiana shade trees. The mean oven dry cacao yields were 626 and 712 kg.ha−1.a−1 cocoa beans underC. alliodora andE. poeppigiana respectively. Harvests have gradually increased over the years and the plantation has now reached maturity. Annual extraction of N, P, K, Ca and Mg in fruits, which is relatively small, was calculated on the basis of chemical analyses. The following average values were found (kg.ha−1.a−1): At the age of 8 years, theC. alliodora trees have reached 26.7 cm diameter (DBH) and 14.0 m in height. Mean annual growth (from age 5 to 7) is 14.6 m3.ha−1.a−1. Natural plant residue production has been measured for 4 years (Nov. 1981–Oct. 1985). UnderE. poeppigiana it has reached a value of 8.91 t.ha−1.a−1 and underC. alliodora 7.07 t.ha−1.a−1. The shade trees have contributed 57 and 47% respectively. Transference and decomposition rates are high and important in the nutrient cycles. The nutrient content of the litter was analysed and corresponding average yearly transfers were (kg.ha−1.a−1): For part I see Vol. 4, No. 3, 1986. In 2004 and 2005, the yield, leaf area, dry weight and dry weight partitions of soybeans were determined at the Agroforestry Research Site (ARS) (est. 1987, Ontario, Canada). Soybean was intercropped with poplar (Populus deltoides x nigra DN-177 L., 556 m3crown tree−1), silver maple (Acer saccharinum L., 308 m3), black walnut (Juglans nigra L., 148 m3) and pecan (Carya illinoensis Wangenh., 114 m3), or grown alone (monoculture). Yield of soybean was not different in either year between the monoculture and the black walnut or pecan intercrops. In the poplar and silver maple treatments, yield was 66 and 85% (2004 and 2005) lower than in the monoculture. Despite the fact that different tree species were used, there was a significant negative linear regression between yield and tree crown volume (R 2 = 0.76, P = 0.0049 and R 2 = 0.93, P < 0.0001 in 2004 and 2005, respectively). With increasing tree crown volume, soybean tended to partition more dry matter to the photosynthetic and reproductive parts and less to structural tissue and petiole. This demonstrates the phenotypic flexibility of the crop component in agroforestry systems. Contrary to theoretical predictions, soybean leaves were thicker as shade increased (increase by 6.2 × 10−4–1.2 × 10−3 mg cm−2, per unit of crown volume), pointing to competitive interactions specific to tree-based intercrops.  相似文献

Seedling growth response of two tropical tree species (Schima superba and Cryptocarya concinna) to simulated N deposition was studied during a period of 11 months. One-year-old seedlings were grown in forest soil treated with N as NH4NO3 at Control–no N addition, N5–5, N10–10, N15–15, and N30–30 g N m−2 year−1. The objective was to examine the effects of N addition on seedling growth and compare this effect between the two tropical tree species of different species-N-requirement. Results showed that both species responded significantly to N addition and exhibited positive effect to lower rate of N addition and negative effect to higher rate of N addition on growth parameters (height and stem base diameter, biomass production, and net photosynthetic rate). The highest values were observed in the N10 plots for S. superba and in the N15 plots for C. concinna, but the lowest values were observed in the N30 plots for both species. However, the reduction in the N30 plots was more pronounced for S. superba than for C. concinna relative to the control plots. Our findings suggest that response of seedling growth of tropical tree species to atmospheric N deposition may vary depending on rate of N deposition and species-N-requirement.  相似文献

Natural abundance of 15N was sampled in young and mature leaves, branches, stem, and coarse roots of trees in a cacao (Theobroma cacao) plantation shaded by legume tree Inga edulis and scattered non-legumes, in a cacao plantation with mixed-species shade (legume Gliricidia sepium and several non-legumes), and in a tree hedgerow bordering the plantations in Guácimo, in the humid Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica. The deviation of the sample 15N proportion from that of atmosphere (δ15N) was similar in non-legumes Cordia alliodora, Posoqueria latifolia, Rollinia pittieri, and T. cacao. Deep-rooted Hieronyma alchorneoides had lower δ15N than other non-N2-fixers, which probably reflected uptake from a partially different soil N pool. Gliricidia sepium had low δ15N. Inga edulis had high δ15N in leaves and branches but low in stem and coarse roots. The percentage of N fixed from atmosphere out of total tree N (%Nf) in G. sepium varied 56–74%; N2 fixation was more active in July (the rainiest season) than in March (the relatively dry season). The variation of δ15N between organs in I. edulis was probably associated to 15N fractionation in leaves. Stem and coarse root δ15N was assumed to reflect the actual ratio of N2 fixation to soil N uptake; stem-based estimates of %Nf in I. edulis were 48–63%. Theobroma cacao below I. edulis had lower δ15N than T. cacao below mixed-species shade, which may indicate direct N transfer from I. edulis to T. cacao but results so far were inconclusive. Further research should address the 15N fractionation in the studied species for improving the accuracy of the N transfer estimates. The δ15N appeared to vary according to ecophysiological characteristics of the trees.  相似文献

Genipa americana L. (Rubiaceae) is a late successional neotropical fruit tree used in riparian forest restoration programs. We analyze the effects of light availability and soil flooding on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of G. americana seedlings under nursery and natural light conditions. Two light levels (full sunlight and shade), and two levels of soil water (flooded and control) were used in the experiment. Flooding induced significant changes in the total seedling biomass (P < 0.01). The differences among water treatments were 70 and 10% at full sunlight and shade, respectively. These changes were explained by alterations in the maximum quantum efficiency of the photosystem 2 (Fv/Fm), light-saturated net photosynthetic rates (A sat) and intrinsic water use efficiency (WUE). G. americana has high physiological plasticity in relation to the light availability and flooding, although significant interactive effects between high light exposure and soil flooding were observed in several photosynthetic and growth variables. The results highlight the importance of the synergistic effects between physical environmental variables on the establishment and growth of G. americana seedlings. In the practical point of view we can indicate that, in degraded riparian forests subjected to soil flooding, seedlings of this species should be planted under partially shaded environments.  相似文献

Eco-physiological responses of seedlings of eight species,Pinus koraiensis, Picea koraiensis, Larix olgensis, Populus ussuriensis, Betula platyphylla, Tilia amurensis, Traxinus mandshurica andAcer mono from broadleaved/Korean pine forest, to elevated CO2 were studied by using open-top chambers under natural sunlight in Changbai Mountain, China in two growing seasons (1998–1999). Two concentrations of CO2 were designed: elevated CO2 (700 μmol·mol−1) and ambient CO2 (400 μmol·mol−1). The study results showed that the height growth of the tree seedlings grown at elevated CO2 increased by about 10%–40% compared to those grown at ambient CO2. And the water using efficiency of seedlings also followed the same tendency. However, the responses of seedlings in transpiration and chlorophyll content to elevated CO2 varied with tree species. The broad-leaf tree species were more sensitive to the elevated CO2 than conifer tree species. All seedlings showed a photosynthetic acclimation to long-term elevated CO2. Plasticity of structural and physiological leaf traits elicited by irradiance and soil nutrients was investigated in two sympatric mediterranean oaks: a sclerophyllous (Quercus suber L.) and a non-sclerophyllous species (Q. canariensis Willd.). Seedlings were grown for 2 years in pots in a 2-way crossed factors design. Leaf mass-to-area ratio (LMA) and nitrogen were recorded, and photosynthetic capacity (i.e. the apparent maximal carboxylation rate by rubisco, V cmax) was derived from response curves of net CO2 assimilation (A) versus intercellular CO2 mol fraction (C i). Structural equation modelling was applied to the data for disentangling the complex correlation structure between variables. The two species differed significantly in photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE). They displayed the expected responses to irradiance, with large increases in LMA, V cmax and nitrogen per unit leaf area and decreases in mass-based nitrogen content. Nutrient availability modulated severely leaf N content (mass- and area-based) and mass-based maximal carboxylation rate, but not the plastic response of all these parameters to irradiance. Irradiance primarily modulated leaf structure (LMA), and secondarily nitrogen content, while nutrient availability modulated directly nitrogen content. Nitrogen content in turn had a severe impact on mass-based photosynthetic capacity. It is concluded that in young trees solely leaf structure displayed irradiance-elicited plasticity. This plasticity was not modulated by nutrient availability and was similar in a sclerophyllous and a non-sclerophyllous species.  相似文献

We used a null-balance porometer to measure leaf conductance of mature and primary leaves of natural seedlings, saplings, and trees ofPinus roxburghii (chir) during autumn at four sites at 1,320–1,930 m elevation in the central Himalaya of India. Our hypothesis that primary leaves had higher leaf conductance than mature leaves (needles in fascicles), based on measurements in other pines, was rejected. Comparisons on the same saplings and seedlings showed lower leaf conductance for primary leaves than for mature leaves. Primary leaves on seedlings and saplings also did not consistently have higher leaf conductance than mature leaves on near-by trees. Mature leaves on seedlings, however, did often have higher conductance than mature leaves on nearby trees. Mean values for leaf conductance (mmol m−2 s−1, based on total leaf surface area) ranged from 42–82 for mature leaves on trees, 60–121 for mature leaves on seedlings, and 28–67 for primary leaves on seedlings. Compared to published values for other pine species, conductance of mature leaves ofP. roxburghii is relatively low. Funding for this study was provided by grants from the United States National Science Foundation, INT-9312052 and INT-9404043. We appreciate the review of an early draft by Barbara Bond.  相似文献
