There is a need to develop alternative harvest indexes for black skinned plums. The aim of this research was to analyze and compare the most commonly used indexes for deciding the harvest date for Japanese plum, and evaluate the effectiveness of new approaches for studying maturation. The ripening process was monitored on-tree and during postharvest in a non-destructive way, through the absorbance of chlorophyll (IAD), the compression strength of the intact fruit, and the traditional parameters associated with ripening. Fruit were harvested at commercial ripeness and “tree-ripe”, and were stored for 10 d at 22 °C and 75-80% RH. The IAD decreased during the last phase of development of the fruit on-tree, and it was related to the common indexes used for plums. ‘Angeleno’ showed a decrease of the IAD 24% lower than that observed for ‘Autumn beaut’. The IAD versus time showed the highest coefficients of determination when compared with the soluble solids concentration (SSC), flesh firmness, hue (H°) and chroma (C*) of the skin. The compression strength of the intact fruit was associated with flesh firmness, and to a lesser extent with the SSC for ‘Angeleno’, whereas for ‘Autumn beaut’ higher correlations for both the SSC and flesh firmness were observed. The C* of the skin on ‘Autumn beaut’ showed an erratic change during ripening; by contrast, for ‘Angeleno’, this index showed a clear trend. During postharvest it was observed that for ‘Angeleno’ fruit picked at commercial ripeness, the rate of change of the IAD was practically the same as observed on-tree, while for ‘Autumn beaut’ the rates of change on-tree and at postharvest were 0.075 IAD d−1 and 0.024 IAD d−1, respectively. For the “tree-ripe” fruit, the rate of change was practically the same for both cultivars. Similar trends were observed for the compression strength.  相似文献

A hand-held instrument (DA Meter, Sinteleia, Bolonga, Italy) which measures chlorophyll nondestructively and gives an IAD index (index of the absorption difference between 670 and 720 nm), was used to measure quality attributes of three cultivars of apples. A preharvest study conducted in a ‘Starking’ apple orchard found determination coefficients of r2 values of 0.79 to 0.64 between the IAD index and starch levels, firmness, TSS and TA of fruit. Three orchards of ‘Starking’, ‘Granny Smith’ and ‘Pink Lady’ apples were sampled during commercial harvest and the apples held in air storage for up to six months. The IAD index measured either at harvest or at removal from storage was correlated with TSS, TA and firmness of the apples. The r2 values were best for TSS (0.76) and poorest for firmness (0.51). Moreover, the measurement at harvest and at removal from storage gave similar prediction coefficients for quality attributes. This measurement can be used to sort at harvest for different quality classes after storage, or at removal from storage for different marketing classes.  相似文献

The research was conducted to evaluate the relationship between IAD index (index of absorption difference between 670 and 720 nm) values and internal quality attributes of apples treated with 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and stored in air and controlled atmospheres (CA). Apples of ‘8S6923’ (Aurora Golden Gala™), ‘Fuji’ and ‘Royal Gala’ were tested. The results with Aurora Golden Gala™ show that IAD index values were maintained at higher levels if the fruit were stored in CA and that 1-MCP had no significant effect on retaining at-harvest values. The IAD values correlated with chlorophyll a content in the peel (R2 = 0.95, P < 0.0001), but not with chlorophyll b content, internal ethylene levels, firmness or titratable acidity. ‘Royal Gala’ apples showed a similar response to Aurora Golden Gala™ apples, showing no correlation between IAD index values and internal quality attributes of those apples when treated with 1-MCP and/or CA. In contrast, ‘Fuji’ apples showed a relationship between IAD index value changes and internal ethylene concentrations (R2 = 0.67, P < 0.05) and titratable acidity changes (R2 = 0.89, P < 0.01), but not firmness. These results suggest that when 1-MCP and/or CA are applied to apples after harvest, that IAD index values do not consistently correlate to any internal quality attributes other than peel chlorophyll a content.  相似文献

The peach melting flesh cultivars ‘Ryan Sun’ and ‘Sweet September’ and the non-melting, ‘Kakamas’ were harvested according to their visually assessed ground color and divided into four, ripeness classes (M1, M2, M3, and M4). The following aspects were determined: fruit mass, soluble, solids content (SSC), ground skin hue angle (h°) and chroma (C*), the absorbance difference at 670 nm and, 720 nm index (IAD), and the texture (fruit firmness measured with a needle, flesh firmness measured, with a 7.9 mm plunger, and uniaxial compression strength). Considering that in peaches, the h° of the, ground color and the IAD are maturity indicators closely associated with ripeness and particularly with, flesh firmness, the texture parameters and their relationship to h° and IAD were examined. The visual, assessment of the ground color was validated as the criterion for sorting the ripeness levels in peaches, as confirmed by h° and IAD. Fruit firmness assessed with the needle and that with the 7.9 mm plunger, were highly correlated with each other and with the h° and IAD, whereas the compression strength, exhibited less correlation with the optical properties of the skin. The non-melting ‘Kakamas’ showed, the poorest correlation between texture and h° and IAD. Comparing both optical properties, the IAD, showed a higher correlation with texture features than the h°. In a second experiment, fruit from the M3 ripeness class was maintained in a ripening chamber (20 °C, and 80% RH) until the flesh was softened for consumption. During postharvest, the first two principal, components of a principal component analysis explained 85% of the total variance of the texture, components and the optical properties of the skin. PC1 (67.2%) was defined positively by the texture, parameters and IAD. The h° of the ground color was negatively related to all texture parameters, and, IAD. PC2 (17.8%) was associated positively with the juice content, and this parameter proved to be, independent of all others.  相似文献

In this work Aloe vera gel (AV) alone or with the addition of 10 or 2% rosehip oil was used as fruit edible coatings in a wide range of Prunus species and cultivars: peaches (‘Roma’ and ‘B-424-16’ flat type), plums (‘Red Beauty’ and ‘Songria’), nectarine (‘Garofa’) and sweet cherry (‘Brooks’). Following treatments, fruit were stored at 20 °C for 6 days and analysed for the effect of treatments on fruit ripening and quality parameters compared with uncoated fruit (control). The addition of the rosehip oil to AV gel reduced respiration rate in all fruit, and ethylene production in the climacteric ones (peaches, plums and nectarine). In addition, all the parameters related with fruit ripening and quality, such as weight loss, softening, colour change and ripening index, were also delayed in treated compared with control fruit, the effect being generally higher when rosehip oil was added to AV, and especially in those fruit that exhibited the highest ethylene production rates (‘Roma’ and flat type peaches). Although the highest effect was obtained with AV + rosehip oil at 10%, the sensory panel detected an excess of gloss and oiliness on the fruit surface, which was considered as a negative attribute. Thus, 2% rosehip oil added to AV could be used as an innovative postharvest tool to increase the beneficial effect of AV as an edible coating, especially in climacteric fruit showing high ethylene production rates.  相似文献

The underlying causes as well as chemical and biochemical alleviation for CO2-induced browning in apple fruit are poorly understood. Ascorbic acid (AsA) dynamics in ‘Braeburn,’ a susceptible cultivar, and ‘Gala’, a resistant cultivar, were evaluated during on-tree development and storage at 0.5 °C in air or controlled atmospheres (CA) containing 1 kPa O2 and 1, 3 or 5 kPa CO2. ‘Braeburn’ fruit treated with diphenylamine (DPA) was also stored for 1 month to determine effects on browning incidence and AsA concentration. ‘Braeburn’ apples had significantly higher (p  0.05) AsA levels than ‘Gala’ during on-tree development, and storage. No correlation between AsA and maturity/ripening indices for ‘Braeburn’ or ‘Gala’ was apparent. Histochemical localization of fruit AsA showed a staining intensity consistent with the quantity analytically determined, and showed that AsA is diffusely distributed throughout the cortex in both cultivars during on-tree development. During storage, AsA was localized to the periphery of brown tissue in ‘Braeburn’ and to the coreline and cortex proximal to the peel in ‘Braeburn’ and ‘Gala’ tissues. DPA decreased browning development during storage, however, no correlation between DPA treatment and AsA quantity in healthy or brown cortex tissue was observed. Several important odor-active volatiles are produced via processes initiated by cellular disruption brought about by cutting or mastication. Of these, six-carbon (C6) volatiles, including the aldehydes, cis-3-hexenal, its isomer trans-2-hexenal, and hexanal, as well as their corresponding alcohols, are produced from action of the lipoxygenase (LOX) pathway on substrates released by tissue disruption. We investigated the production of these and other odor-active volatiles from ‘Jonagold’ apple fruit for whole and disrupted tissues as a function of maturity/ripeness. The impact of ripening was determined by comparing ‘normally-ripening’ fruit with ‘non-ripening’ (1-methylcyclopropene-treated) fruit. The study was conducted over 8 weeks and evaluations were twice-weekly for two successive seasons. C6 aldehyde synthesis by crushed fruit was, at first, extremely high for non- and normally-ripening fruit such that the concentration of the aldehydes was several hundred times higher than their human odor thresholds in the containers used to present samples to the sensory panelists. cis-3-Hexenal, which remained constant throughout the experiment for non-ripening fruit, declined markedly for normally-ripening fruit, coincident with the onset of ripening. Conversely, trans-2-hexenal and hexanal increased in normally-ripening fruit as ripening progressed. Hexanol and hexyl acetate and other esters were produced in a ripening-dependent manner for disrupted as well as intact fruit tissues. The exception was cis-3-hexenyl acetate, which had same declining pattern as its aldehyde precursor, cis-3-hexenal. PCA determined that all volatiles except cis-3-hexenal, cis-3-hexenol and cis-3-hexenyl acetate, were highly associated with ripening. Also, cis-3-hexenal and cis-3-hexenyl acetate correlated negatively with all other variables (volatiles, ethylene, CO2 and sensory tests). Sensory tests revealed that panelists were able to distinguish between non-ripening and normally-ripening fruit approximately 2 weeks before the onset of autocatalytic ethylene, the respiratory climacteric, and ripening-dependent ester production of normally-ripening fruit. The data indicate a shift in LOX pathway activity occurs during ripening, but it is not clear if it is due to changing enzyme activities or changing substrate levels. The shift in pathway activity may be related to perceived changes in aroma for macerated fruit prior to autocatalytic ethylene production.  相似文献

The maturity of nectarines at harvest can be assessed by measuring the absorption coefficient at 670 nm (μa) with the non-destructive technique of time-resolved reflectance spectroscopy (TRS). A kinetic model links μa, converted into the biological shift factor (BSF), to firmness decrease during ripening; in this way the firmness decay model includes the variations in maturity at harvest, thereby allowing prediction of shelf-life for individual fruit. In order to study how this methodology could be practically used at the time of harvest, when μa can be measured non-destructively on all fruit, while the destructive measurement of firmness can only be done on a small sample, various firmness decay models were developed using either data at harvest or within 1–2 d after harvest from previous experimental research with nectarines carried out over a 5-year period. These models were then tested for prediction and classification ability by comparing the predicted firmness and class of usability to the actual ones measured during ripening and their performance compared to that of models based on data during the whole shelf-life. Our results suggest that the methodology might be used as a management tool in the nectarine supply chain. Independently from the actual softening rate, the classification at harvest based on μa is able to segregate fruit of different quality and maturity according to their softening behaviour during shelf-life. Among the various models, those estimated using data at harvest and after 24 h of shelf-life had better performance than those based only on data at harvest. In the 2002 and 2005 seasons, this model showed a classification ability very close to that of models based on data during the whole shelf-life. However, its performance in the 2004 season was not so good, because it could not take into account the influence of cold storage periods prior to shelf-life. The effects of 2-alkyl derivatives of 2-cyclopropene-1-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (CPE) with various lengths of alkyl side chains were examined on ethylene production and flesh softening of ‘Taishuu’ and ‘Fuyu’ persimmon (Diospyros kaki L.) fruit. When the ‘Taishuu’ fruit were treated with gaseous forms of the CPEs with short alkyl chains, the increased ethylene production and decreased flesh firmness of fruit were not inhibited. However, ripening parameters were inhibited by the CPEs with long alkyl chains in proportion to the carbon number. Decyl CPE (DCPE) is relatively stable and sprayable and inhibited postharvest flesh softening of ‘Fuyu’ fruit when sprayed before harvest. Thus, DCPE appears to be a valuable agent for delaying flesh softening of persimmon fruit.  相似文献

‘Helali’ is a late season date palm cultivar. At the mature (Bisir) stage, the fruit are astringent as a result of high contents of soluble tannins, and removal of tannins is necessary for the fruit to be edible. During the harvesting season, only 30–40% of the total fruit might normally ripen (Rutab stage) on the tree and the remaining fruit fail to ripen. This study showed that bunch bagging with different materials such as black or blue polyethylene bags, white ‘agrlsafe’ (polypropylene fleece) and paper bags during the growing season significantly increased the rate of fruit ripening and increased Rutab yield per bunch. In this respect, black and blue polyethylene bags were the most effective followed by ‘agrlsafe’ and paper bags. Preharvest ethrel application significantly increased Rutab fruit yield per bunch compared to the controls. There were no significant differences in Rutab yield per bunch between sprays or injection of ethrel into the bunch peduncle. Postharvest dipping of fruit at the Bisir stage in ethrel at 4.2 ml/l and abscisic acid at 1.0 mM significantly enhanced ripening, compared to the controls. However, ABG-3168 (an ethylene blocker) application at 3.33 g/l significantly inhibited ripening, suggesting a role for ethylene in the ripening process. Ethanol vapor significantly hastened ripening of Bisir fruit over 10 days at ambient conditions in desiccators. The response of immature fruit (according to fruit density and TSS) to ethanol vapor was much greater than mature ones. Also, immersion of fruit in water for 10 h significantly increased fruit ripening compared to the controls, but to a lesser extent. It is concluded that ‘Helali’ date ripening could be hastened by bunch bagging during growth, or by exposing the Bisir fruit to ethanol vapor following harvest. Neither treatment showed any negative impact on the overall quality characteristics of ripe fruit, suggesting that they may be practical tools for increasing the ripening rate of Bisir ‘Helali’ dates.  相似文献

Separate experiments were conducted with three major commercial avocado (Persea americana Mill.) cultivars grown in Florida: ‘Simmonds’ (early-season, West Indian race); ‘Booth 7’ (mid-season, Guatemalan-West Indian hybrid); and ‘Monroe’ (late-season, Guatemalan-West Indian hybrid). Fruit were harvested at preclimacteric stage and left untreated (Control) or treated 24 h after harvest with aqueous 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) at 1.39 (treatment M1) or 2.77 μmol L−1 a.i. (treatment M2) (75 or 150 μg L−1) for 1 min at 20 °C. Whole fruit ripening was monitored at 20 °C/92% ± 3% R.H. and based on whole fruit firmness, respiration and ethylene evolution. Fruit volatiles were assessed at preclimacteric (24 h after harvest), mid-ripe (half of initial fruit firmness) and ripe maturity stages, from 100 g of chopped pulp using a purge and trap system. Untreated, firmer fruit ‘Monroe’ (268 N at harvest) ripened within 12 d of harvest while softer fruit ‘Simmonds’ (118 N) ripened within only 6 d. 1-MCP treatment extended ripening time from 33% (M1) to 83% (M2). All fruit softened normally, indicating the potential benefits of aqueous 1-MCP as a postharvest treatment for avocado when applied at these concentrations. Volatile profiles differed among the three cultivars with several compounds detected in only one cultivar, results that may contribute to a potential identification of the origin of the cultivar based on fruit volatile composition. The West Indian cultivar ‘Simmonds’ had much higher emission of hexanal (preclimacteric fruit) and cis-3-hexenal and cis-3-hexen-1-ol (ripe fruit) than the Guatemalan-West Indian hybrids ‘Booth 7’ and ‘Monroe’. On the other hand, these latter hybrids had much higher levels of alkanes than ‘Simmonds’. Treatment with 1-MCP increased emissions of alkanes during ripening of ‘Booth 7’ and ‘Monroe’. Total volatiles of avocado decreased during ripening mainly due to the significant reduction of sesquiterpenes, the main group of volatiles in all cultivars at harvest (‘Simmonds’, 53%; ‘Booth 7’, 78%; ‘Monroe’, 66%). β-Caryophyllene was the major compound at harvest, but decreased to less than 2% in ripe fruit, at which point most sesquiterpenes were not detected. Among the 10 sesquiterpenes commonly found in the avocado cultivars in this study, only α-Copaene had significantly higher emissions in mid-ripe fruit treated with the higher concentration of 1-MCP (2.77 μmol L−1 a.i.), suggesting that ethylene participates in the regulation of this sesquiterpene.  相似文献

A strong potent inhibitor of ethylene action, 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) maintains apple fruit quality during storage. To understand the influence of time after harvest until 1-MCP treatment, we studied expression patterns of genes for ethylene biosynthesis enzymes and ethylene receptors in two apple cultivars, ‘Orin’ and ‘Fuji’, which differ in ethylene production. Ethylene production and expression of MdACS1, MdERS1, and MdERS2 were suppressed in all 1-MCP-treated ‘Fuji’ fruit, but in ‘Orin’, the later 1-MCP was applied after harvest, the less was the suppression of ethylene production and expression of these genes. In fruit in which 1-MCP had low efficacy (e.g., ‘Orin’ treated at 7 DAH), ethylene production and the level of MdERS1 were briefly reduced by 1-MCP treatment at 2 days after treatment, then began to increase. Since ethylene receptors negatively regulate the ethylene signalling pathway, the increased levels of ethylene production and ethylene receptors after 1-MCP treatment might reduce 1-MCP efficacy.  相似文献

The effects of fruit position within the canopy on the onset of the respiratory climacteric and the rise in ethylene production as well as changes in peel colour and chemical composition were studied in apples (Malus x domestica Borkh. cv. Aroma) during ripening in normal air at 20 °C for 6–8 weeks over two crop seasons. The commencement of the rise in both CO2 and ethylene production was equal independent of fruit position but the peak of ethylene was behind that of CO2 with a lag of several days. While the climacteric ethylene peak was considerably higher in shaded inside apples, the internal ethylene concentration was at the same level independent of canopy position. During maturation on the tree outside fruit developed a red peel colour while inside fruit remained green. Outside fruit had a higher content of dry matter, soluble solids and soluble sugars but a somewhat lower amount of titratable acidity than inside fruit. High summer temperatures in the second year resulted in a significantly higher content of soluble solids and organic acids independent of fruit position but diminished the soluble solids difference between outside and inside fruit and increased the difference in malic and citric acid concentrations. High summer temperatures also increased the difference in peel colour between outside and inside fruit. Independent of canopy position, the soluble solids concentrations remained unchanged during ripening while the amounts of sucrose as well as malic acid and the titratable acidity decreased with a concomitant rise in the cell sap pH. The higher content of soluble sugars and a somewhat lower amount of titratable acidity in outside red-coloured apples probably contribute to improved fruit quality but the difference seems to be strongly dependent on the growing conditions, especially the sum of heat units.  相似文献

The effect of multiple 1-MCP treatments prior to the establishment of controlled atmosphere (CA) storage on the quality of ‘McIntosh’ and ‘Empire’ apples [Malus × sylvestris (L.) Mill. var. domestica (Borkh.) Mansf.] was investigated. Fruit were harvested on three occasions over a 1 week period, and at each harvest cooled overnight and 1-MCP applied the following day. Fruit from the first or second harvests were treated again or for the first time when fruit from each successive harvest was treated. CA conditions were established after the last 1-MCP treatment and fruit were stored for up to 8 months. Delays in 1-MCP application generally resulted in progressively higher internal ethylene concentrations (IECs) at the time of treatment and lower firmness both at the time of treatment and after storage. Multiple 1-MCP applications kept IECs low and maintained firmness compared with single applications that were applied after 4 d. For ‘McIntosh’, external CO2 injury was more prevalent after storage if fruit were treated without delays after harvest for earlier harvests while later harvests were less affected. For ‘Empire’, flesh browning was more prevalent in fruit from later harvests and 1-MCP treated fruit had higher levels than untreated fruit. Either early 1-MCP treatment or multiple treatments reduced senescent breakdown in ‘McIntosh’, and core browning and greasiness in ‘Empire’.  相似文献
