Thirteen healthy neonatal Holstein calves were cold stressed twice by hosing with cold water for 20 minutes, 12 hours between hosings. Measurements of the pattern of ventilation [tidal volume (VT), respiratory frequency (f), minute ventilation (VMIN), and functional residual capacity (FRC)], gas exchange properties of the lungs [alveolar ventilation (VA), oxygen uptake (VO2), CO2 production (VCO2), dead space ventilation (VD), dead space/tidal volume ratio (VD/VT), arterial oxygen tension (PaO2), arterial CO2 tension (PaCO2) and alveolar-arterial oxygen difference (AaDO2)] and of the mechanical properties of the pulmonary system [dynamic compliance (Cdyn), pulmonary resistance (RL), and total respiratory system resistance (RRS)] were taken. Calves responded to chilling by increasing VO2 and VCO2 necessitating an increase in VA. This was accomplished by increasing VT with reciprocal decreases in f so that VMIN remained constant. There was no change in Cdyn, RL, or AaDO2. Seven of these 13 calves were then exposed to intratracheal inoculation of 2 X 10(9) organisms of Pasteurella haemolytica, the remaining calves serving as controls. Within 1 hour, calves exposed to P haemolytica had increased VMIN, f, VD/VT, and VD. There was a decrease in PaO2 associated with increased AaDO2, but no change in PaCO2, Cdyn or RL. By 3 hours after inoculation, there were pronounced changes in PaO2 and AaDO2, and Cdyn was reduced below base-line values. By 12 hours after inoculation, calves infected with P haemolytica had increased RL and RRS and PaCO2, in addition to the previously mentioned changes. Data from Pasteurella-exposed calves indicate that gas exchange impairment and peripheral lung injury occur rapidly and that increases in airway resistance develop relatively late in the disease.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The pulmonary health of 66 horses was assessed by a clinical examination and simple supplementary diagnostic methods. Single breath diagrams for CO(2) (SBD-CO(2)) and derived lung function indices were used to determine pulmonary function. The clinical signs in different groups were related to the results of the lung function indices derived from the SBD-CO(2). In horses with moderate to severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a significant relationship was found between the respiratory frequency and the ratio of Bohr's dead space to the tidal volume (VD(Bohr)/VT), and between the physiological dead space/tidal volume ratio (VD(phys)/VT) and the ratio of the alveolar dead space to the alveolar tidal volume (VD(alv)/VT(alv)), but no significant associations were found between the arterial oxygen tension (P(a)O(2)) and lung function indices derived from the SBD-CO(2). The occurrence of cough, the viscosity of tracheobronchial mucus and the amount of polynuclear neutrophils in tracheobronchial aspirates were significantly related to the expiratory tidal volume (VT), the total expired volume of CO(2) (VCO(2)), VD(Bohr)/VT, VD(phys)/VT and VD(alv)/VT(alv).We conclude that abnormal findings in these clinical parameters indicate a measurable ventilation and perfusion (V(A)/Q) mismatch which is reflected by increases in dead space, VD(Bohr)/VT and VD(phys)/VT as well as VD(alv)/VT(alv).  相似文献

Cardiovascular effects and pulmonary gas exchange were compared during conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV) and interrupted high-frequency, positive-pressure ventilation (IHFPPV) in 6 anesthetized ponies in dorsal recumbency. When the peak airway pressure (Paw) was held constant at control values attained during CMV (18 to 20 cm of H2O), and the ventilator frequency of IHFPPV was varied over the range, 2.5 to 12.5 Hz, significant (P less than 0.05) changes from control values were observed only in the ratio of dead-space volume to tidal volume (VD/VT) and in the respiratory minute volume (VE). The mean (+/- SEM) carbon dioxide excretion (VCO2) was 2.12 +/- 0.1 ml/kg/min during IHFPPV. Dead-space ventilation ranged from 40 to 73.7% of total ventilation and increased directly with increasing frequency. The VE also increased, from 89 ml/kg/min at a ventilatory frequency of 2.5 Hz to 145 ml/kg/min at a frequency of 12.5 Hz. Maintaining the frequency of IHFPPV constant at 12.5 Hz and increasing the Paw over the range of 5 to 30 cm of H2O caused significant (P less than 0.05) changes in arterial partial pressure of O2 (PaO2), VCO2, pulmonary shunt fraction (QS/QT), VE, arterial-alveolar differences in oxygen tension (AaDO2), VD/VT, and cardiac output, compared with CMV. The PaO2 and the VCO2 increased linearly with increasing Paw. With increasing Paw, VD/VT decreased directly with increasing Paw from 98 to 69.3%. Gas exchange at a Paw of 15 cm of H2O during IHFPPV was equivalent to conditions at Paw of 20 cm of H2O during CMV. At a higher Paw during IHFPPV, improvements over control values were observed in gas exchange.  相似文献

Comparative pulmonary mechanics in the horse and the cow   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Pulmonary mechanics and lung volumes were measured in horses and cows to determine if differences in breathing pattern between the two species were due to differences in the mechanical properties of the lungs. Tidal volume (VT) was larger in the horses, while the respiratory rate (fR) and minute ventilation (VE) were higher in the cows. The horses often had a double peak in airflow during inspiration and, or, expiration, while the cows had a single peak during expiration. Measured lung volumes were larger in the horses and they had a higher dynamic lung compliance (Cdyn,L), although the static compliance of the lung, chest wall and respiratory system (Cst,L,Cst,w and Cst,rs respectively) did not appear to differ between the two species. The cows had a greater change in maximum transpulmonary pressure (delta PLmax) and an increased nonelastic work of breathing (Wb). However, the pulmonary resistance (RL) did not differ between the two species, thus the higher delta PLmax and Wb in the cows were most likely a function of their higher flow rates. Calculations of the rate of work of breathing (W) indicate that both species breathed at an fR above the minimum W. The fR in the horses was close to the fR predicted for the average minimum muscle force, but the fR in the cows was higher. As the differences in the mechanical properties of the lung do not explain the differences in flow pattern, nor adequately account for the higher fR in the cows, it is suggested that the differences in breathing pattern between the two species is due to differences in the chest wall, particularly the size and shape of the abdomen.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of changing the mode of ventilation from spontaneous to controlled on the arterial-to-end-tidal CO2 difference [P(a-ET)CO2] and physiological dead space (VD(phys)/VT) in laterally and dorsally recumbent halothane-anesthetized horses. STUDY DESIGN; Prospective, experimental, nonrandomized trial. ANIMALS: Seven mixed breed adult horses (1 male and 6 female) weighing 320 +/- 11 kg. METHODS: Horses were anesthetized in 2 positions-right lateral and dorsal recumbency-with a minimum interval of 1 month. Anesthesia was maintained with halothane in oxygen for 180 minutes. Spontaneous ventilation (SV) was used for 90 minutes followed by 90 minutes of controlled ventilation (CV). The same ventilator settings were used for both laterally and dorsally recumbent horses. Arterial blood gas analysis was performed every 30 minutes during anesthesia. End-tidal CO2 (PETCO2) was measured continuously. P(a-ET)CO2 and VD(phys)NT were calculated. Statistical analysis included analysis of variance for repeated measures over time, followed by Student-Newman-Keuls test. Comparison between groups was performed using a paired t test; P < .05 was considered significant. RESULTS: P(a-ET)CO2 and VD(phys)/VT increased during SV, whereas CV reduced these variables. The variables did not change significantly throughout mechanical ventilation in either group. Dorsally recumbent horses showed greater P(a-ET)CO2 and VD(phys)/VT values throughout. PaCO2 was greater during CV in dorsally positioned horses. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Changing the mode of ventilation from spontaneous to controlled was effective in reducing P(a-ET)CO2 and physiological dead space in both laterally and dorsally recumbent halothane-anesthetized horses. Dorsal recumbency resulted in greater impairment of effective ventilation. Capnometry has a limited value for accurate estimation of PaCO2 in anesthetized horses, although it may be used to evaluate pulmonary function when paired with arterial blood gas analysis.  相似文献

The influence of pharmacologic enhancement of cardiac output on the alveolar-to-arterial oxygen tension (difference (P[A-a]O2), physiologic right-to-left shunt fraction (Qs/Qt), and physiologic dead space-to-tidal volume ratio (VD/VT) ws studied in halothane-anesthetized horses in left lateral, right lateral, and dorsal recumbencies. Adult horses were anesthetized, using xylazine (2.2 mg/kg, IM), guaifenesin (50 mg/kg, IV), thiamylal (4.4 mg/kg, IV), and halothane (1.5% to 2% inspired) in 100% O2. Mechanical ventilation was controlled to maintain arterial eucapnia (PaCO2) 35 to 45 mm of Hg) for a period lasting at least 1 hour. Dobutamine was administered at dosages of 1, 3, and 5 micrograms/kg/min, IV, on a randomized basis. The P(A-a)O2, Qs/Qt, and VD/VT were calculated during equilibration and after each dobutamine infusion was given. The P(A-a)O2 and Qs/Qt were significantly (P less than 0.05) greater and VD/VT tended to be greater in horses in dorsal recumbency, compared with those values in horses in left lateral or right lateral recumbency. Cardiac output was similar in all horses, regardless of body position (recumbency). The qualitative relationship between horses in the 3 recumbent positions were not altered by dobutamine. Cardiac output was significantly (P less than 0.05) increased by 3 or 5 micrograms of dobutamine/kg/min in all horses, whereas P(A-a)O2, Qs/Qt, and VD/VT were not significantly altered by dobutamine. The results of the present study failed to substantiate our clinical observations of decreased P(A-a)O2 and Qs/Qt in anesthetized compromised horses given dobutamine.  相似文献

Significant differences exist in the respiratory adaptation to exercise in different equine breeds. This research describes the ergoespirometric response to exercise of Andalusian (AN) and Arabian (A) horses, both selected according to morphological criteria. Thirteen untrained male horses (6 AN and 7 A) performed a treadmill exercise test (TET) with a slope of 6%, with workloads starting from 5 m/s and increasing 1 m/s every 3 min until the horses were not able to keep the required velocity. Tidal volume (TV), respiratory rate, minute ventilation (VE), oxygen uptake (VO2), carbon dioxide production, peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), exercise time to fatigue (ETF) and respiratory aerobic threshold (RAT) were determined. AN horses presented higher TV and VE, whereas respiratory rate, VO2 and VCO2 were lower at the same velocities. RER was similar between breeds. ETF was longer in A horses (556.7 ± 66.5 in AN vs. 607.1 ± 71.1 s in A) and no significant differences were found in RAT (5.50 ± 0.50 in AN vs. 5.86 ± 1.07 m/s in A). In summary, despite the more intense ventilatory response to exercise at the same velocity, AN horses had lower VO2. The AN horse develops a more intense ventilatory response to fixed velocities than the A horse and it could be interesting to clarify the role of the locomotion characteristics in this response.  相似文献

A valved gas collection system for horses was validated, then used to examine the relationship between the respiratory exchange ratio (RER), and plasma and muscle lactate in exercising horses. Four healthy Standardbred horses were trained to breathe through the apparatus while exercising on a treadmill. Comparisons of arterial blood gas tensions were made at 3 work levels for each horse, without (control), and with the gas collection system present. At the highest work level, the arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) was significantly lower (P < 0.05), and the arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) was significantly higher (P < 0.05), than control levels when the apparatus was present; however arterial oxygen content remained unchanged. The horses completed a standardized incremental treadmill test on 4 occasions to determine the repeatability of measurements of oxygen consumption (VO2), carbon dioxide production (VCO2), inspired minute ventilation (VI), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), ventilatory equivalent for oxygen (VI/VO2), tidal volume (VT), and ventilatory frequency (VF). All gas exchange and respiratory measurements showed good reproducibility with the mean coefficient of variation of the 4 horses ranging from 3.8 to 12%. We examined the relationship between 3 indices of energy metabolism in horses performing treadmill exercise: respiratory exchange ratio (RER), central venous plasma and muscle lactate concentrations. A relationship between RER and plasma lactate concentration was established. To compare muscle and plasma lactate concentrations, the horses completed a discontinuous exercise test without the gas collection apparatus present. Significant relationships (P < 0.05), between plasma lactate concentration and RER, and between plasma and muscle lactate concentration, were described for each horse. The valved gas collection system produced a measurable but tolerable degree of interference to respiration, and provided reproducible measurements of gas exchange and ventilatory measurements. It was concluded that measurements of both gas exchange and blood lactate may be used to indicate increased glycolytic activity within exercising skeletal muscle.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between the plasma concentrations of vitamin A (VA), vitamin E (VE) and β-carotene (BC) during embryo collection in Japanese Black cows that had undergone superovulation treatment and the embryo collection results. Following superovulation treatment in 116 Japanese Black cows, we collected 1317 embryos by nonsurgical means seven days after artificial insemination. The collected embryos were classified into transferable embryos, unfertilized oocytes and degenerated embryos. After embryo collection, we collected blood samples from the cows and measured the plasma concentrations of VA, VE and BC. The cows were then divided into 2 groups depending on the plasma concentration of VA (L and H: < 80 IU/dl and ≥ 80 IU/dl), VE (L and H: < 150 μg/dl and ≥ 150 μg/dl) and BC (L and H: < 150 μg/dl and ≥ 150 μg/dl). As a result, the number of collected embryos in the H group of VE was significantly (P<0.01) higher than that in L groups. Furthermore, the number of transferable embryos was higher (P<0.05) in all VA, VE and BC H groups than in the L groups. The H group for BC showed a high ratio of transferable embryos compared with the L group (P<0.05). Consequently, the present study suggests that the plasma VE and BC concentrations are positively correlated with the embryo collection results.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether volumetric capnography indices could be used to differentiate between horses without recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) and horses with RAO that were in clinical remission or that had clinically apparent RAO. ANIMALS: 70 adult Swiss Warmblood horses (20 used for pleasure riding and 50 used for dressage or show jumping). PROCEDURE: Horses were allocated to 4 groups on the basis of history, clinical signs, results of endoscopy, and cytologic findings (group 1, 21 healthy horses; group 2, 22 horses with RAO that were in remission; group 3, 16 horses with mild RAO; group 4, 11 horses with exacerbated RAO). Expiratory volume and CO2 curves were recorded by use of a computerized ultrasonic spirometer. Volumetric capnograms were plotted, and derived indices were calculated. RESULTS: Dead-space volume (VD) was calculated by use of the Bohr equation (VD(Bohr)) and for physiologic VD (VD(phys)). Ratios for VD(Bohr) to expiratory tidal volume (VT) and VD(phys) to V(T) as well as an index of effective CO2 elimination were significantly different among groups of horses. Age and use of the horses also significantly affected volumetric capnography indices. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Ratios of VD(Bohr) to VT and VD(phys) to VT as well as an index of effective CO2 elimination were sufficiently sensitive measures to distinguish between healthy horses and horses with RAO in remission. To optimize the ability of volumetric capnography indices to differentiate among horses in heterogeneous populations, it is important to account for effects of age and specific use of the horses.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the accuracy with which pulmonary function indices derived from the volumetric capnogram can diagnose different degrees of recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) in 63 warmblood horses. The sensitivity, specificity, the area under the receiver operating curve (AUC), optimal cut-off values and predictive values of the indices were calculated. The results obtained have shown that there is no single index characterised by specificity and sensitivity to differentiate with an accuracy of >90 per cent between the different degrees of RAO compared to the clinical examination. The indices A(1)/A(2) and VD(alv)/ VT(alv) (AUC=0.55 and 0.53) appeared to have the highest relative sensitivity and specificity to differentiate between healthy horses and horses suffering from subclinical or minor RAO and the indices VD(phys)/ VT and VD(Bohr)/ VT between horses suffering from subclinical or minor RAO and horses with moderate to severe RAO (AUC=0.71 and 0.70). We do not consider it acceptable to use cut off values optimised for both maximal sensitivity and specificity, because a great number of horses would have been inappropriately classified.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To determine temporal variations of pulmonary function in horses without respiratory tract disease (controls) and horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and determine whether reversibility of airway obstruction after environmental control can be predicted by response to atropine administration. ANIMALS: 7 COPD-affected and 5 control horses. PROCEDURES: Pulmonary function testing was performed monthly during 3 consecutive months, daily for 5 consecutive days, and at 6-hour intervals for 24 hours before and after administration of atropine (0.02 mg/kg of body weight, i.v.) and after 5 consecutive months at pasture. Respiratory rate, tidal volume (VT), minute ventilation (VE), maximal change in transpulmonary pressure (deltaP(L)), pulmonary resistance (R(L)), and pulmonary elastance (E(L)) were calculated. RESULTS: COPD-affected horses had a significantly higher expiratory to inspiratory time ratio (T(E)/T(I)) and deltaP(L), E(L), and R(L) than horses without respiratory tract diseases during all periods and higher V(E) during monthly and daily evaluations. Daily variation in VT and monthly and circadian variation in E(L) were significant in COPD-affected horses. In control horses, significant changes were apparent only in T(E)/T(I) during daily recordings. In COPD-affected horses, reduction in deltaP(L), R(L), and E(L) was significant after atropine administration and after maintenance on pasture. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Despite variations in measurements of respiratory mechanics in both groups of horses, values remained significantly different between groups over time. Despite individual variation, measurements were repeatable during short and long periods. Response to administration of atropine to COPD-affected horses underestimated improvement in respiratory tract function that resulted from maintenance on pasture.  相似文献

The cardiopulmonary effects of 0, 5, 10, and 15 cm of H2O positive end-expiratory pressures (PEEP) were determined in anesthetized, spontaneously breathing horses, using a 4 by 4 Latin-square design with one repetition. Cardiac output, alveolar-arterial oxygen tension difference, alveolar ventilation, dead space/tidal volume ratio, and carbon dioxide elimination were not significantly altered by the procedure. As PEEP was increased, alveolar and arterial oxygen tensions, respiratory exchange ratio, and pH decreased, whereas arterial carbon dioxide tension and oxygen consumption increased. These results indicate PEEP is contraindicated in laterally recumbent spontaneously ventilating anesthetized horses breathing air, because it causes alveolar hypoventilation and does not improve pulmonary gas exchange.  相似文献

Ventilation-perfusion relationships in the anaesthetised horse   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Ventilation-perfusion relationships were studied by the multiple inert gas elimination technique in seven horses while they were conscious and during inhalation anaesthesia with halothane. A generally good match between ventilation and perfusion was found in the conscious, standing horse. During anaesthesia a huge shunt developed, ie perfusion of completely unventilated lung regions, both in dorsal and left lateral recumbency and whether the horse was breathing spontaneously or mechanically ventilated. The shunt was significantly greater and the arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) significantly lower in dorsal than in left lateral recumbency. Little or no perfusion of low VA/Q regions was observed during anaesthesia, whether ventilation was spontaneous or mechanical. Positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) did not significantly improve PaO2 or reduce the shunt. Selective mechanical ventilation of dependent lung regions with PEEP reduced the shunt markedly, an effect that was not achieved by conventional mechanical ventilation with general PEEP. The findings seem compatible with alveolar collapse during anaesthesia, causing shunt, whereas the absence of clearly low VA/Q regions questions the role of airway closure as the major disturbance of gas exchange.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of spontaneous breathing and mechanical ventilation on haemodynamic variables, including muscle and skin perfusion measured with laser Doppler flowmetery, in horses anaesthetized with isoflurane. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective controlled study. ANIMALS: Ten warm-blood trotter horses (five males, five females). Mean mass was 492 kg (range 420-584 kg) and mean age was 5 years (range 4-8 years). MATERIALS AND METHODS: After pre-anaesthetic medication with detomidine (10 microg kg(-1)) anaesthesia was induced with intravenous (IV) guaifenesin and thiopental (4-5 mg kg(-1) IV) and maintained using isoflurane in oxygen. The horses were positioned in dorsal recumbency. In five animals breathing was initially spontaneous (SB) while the lungs of the other five were ventilated mechanically using intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV). Total anaesthesia time was 4 hours with the ventilatory mode changed after 2 hours. During anaesthesia, heart rate (HR) cardiac output (Qt) stroke volume (SV) systemic arterial blood pressures (sAP), and pulmonary arterial pressure (pAP) were recorded. Peripheral perfusion was measured in the semimembranosus and gluteal muscles and on the tail skin using laser Doppler flowmetry. Arterial (a) and mixed venous (v) blood gases, pH, haemoglobin concentration [Hb], haematocrit (Hct), plasma lactate concentration and muscle temperature were measured. Oxygen content, venous admixture (s/Qt) oxygen delivery (DO(2)) and oxygen consumption (VO(2)) were calculated. RESULTS: During mechanical ventilation, HR, sAP, pAP, Qt, SV, Qs/Qt and PaCO(2) were lower and PaO(2) was higher compared with spontaneous breathing. There were no differences between the modes of ventilation in the level of perfusion, DO(2), VO(2), [Hb], (Hct), or plasma lactate concentration. After the change from IPPV to SB, left semimembranosus muscle and skin perfusion improved, while muscle perfusion tended to decrease when SB was changed to IPPV. Low-frequency flow motion was seen twice as frequently during IPPV compared with SB. CONCLUSIONS: Mechanical ventilation impaired cardiovascular function compared with SB in horses during isoflurane anaesthesia. Muscle and skin perfusion changes occurred with ventilation, although further studies are needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.  相似文献

The multiple inert gas elimination technique was adapted for use in the conscious standing horse. The modifications included increased infusion rate of the inert gases (30 ml/min), extended infusion time (60 mins) in order to reach steady state, and construction of a nose mask mixing box system for collection of expired gas. Eight adult horses with a mean weight of 454 kg and a mean age of 6.1 years were studied while standing under resting conditions. Ventilation was 65.2 liters/min and cardiac output measured by thermodilution 40.2 liters/min. Systemic and pulmonary artery mean pressures were 114 and 26 mmHg, respectively. Three horses showed a unimodal VA/Q distribution centred upon a mean VA/Q of one. Five horses had a bimodal distribution with an additional high VA/Q mode comprising 2 to 18 per cent of ventilation. The mean logarithmic standard deviation of perfusion was 0.41. There was no perfusion of 'low' VA/Q regions, but minor shunting on an average of 1 per cent was noted. Inert gas dead space (minus apparatus dead space) averaged 38 per cent of total ventilation. Arterial oxygen tension varied from 11 to 14 kPa and the mean arterial CO2 tension was 5.7 kPa. It is concluded that the standing horse in general has a good match between ventilation and perfusion but that some individuals display high VA/Q regions, possibly explained by poor perfusion of upper lung regions.  相似文献

This study assessed the effect of micronutrient supplementation around peripartum period on immune function, reproductive performance, milk yield and milk quality of crossbred cows. Thirty pregnant crossbred cows in their late gestation were selected and randomly divided into five groups for study. Six cows in each group were supplemented with vitamin E (VE) (2000 IU/cow/day), vitamin A (VA) (100,000 IU/cow/day), copper (Cu) (20 ppm/cow/day), zinc (Zn) (80 ppm/cow/day) individually from 45 days pre-calving to 45 days post-calving and one group without any supplementation served as control. Immune function was studied by in vitro phagocytic activity (PA) of blood neutrophils, lymphocyte proliferation response (LPR) and plasma interleukin-8 (IL-8) concentration. Supplementation of VA significantly (P?<?0.05) increased the in vitro PA of blood neutrophils and decreased milk somatic cell counts (SCC). Zn supplementation significantly (P?<?0.05) increased the T lymphocyte proliferation response, whereas B lymphocyte LPR was significantly (P?<?0.05) increased with both VA and Zn supplementation as compared to the control cows. Plasma IL-8 concentration was significantly (P?<?0.05) higher in all supplemented cows. Supplementation of VE, VA and Zn significantly (P?<?0.05) reduces days open, whereas VA significantly (P?<?0.05) reduced the service per conception. In this study, it is concluded that VE, VA and Zn supplementation around peripartum period can boost the immunity and improve the reproductive performance of crossbred cows in a semi-arid tropical environment.  相似文献

The regional distribution of ventilation to perfusion ratios (VA/Q) in the lungs of 8 healthy standing Thoroughbred geldings (4.4 +/- 1.5 years, 465.7 +/- 46.6 kg) was studied, using steady-state inhalation and IV infusion of the radioactive gas krypton-81m. The VA/Q was uniformly distributed within a vertical lung strip centered over the 9th rib on the right side. Ventilation per unit of alveolar volume (V/VA) assessed from the clearance of inhaled radioactive gas in 5 horses increased from 0.49 +/- 0.13 (arbitrary units) in nondependent lung zones to 1.45 +/- 0.16 in dependent lung zones. Seemingly, a vertical gradient of pulmonary ventilation exists in the horse that is matched by a similar gradient of perfusion.  相似文献

Eight horses (mean weight 438 kg) with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) were studied for clinical signs, ventilation/perfusion relationships (VA/Q) and lung morphology. Four horses were killed and necropsied after the study. In horses with COPD, minute ventilation was almost twice as high as normal, whereas PaO2 was significantly decreased. Cardiac output was normal, but pulmonary artery pressure and pulmonary vascular resistance were significantly increased. The VA/Q distribution was abnormal with an increased scatter of VA/Q ratios. However, shunt (VA/Q = 0) was increased in one horse only. Ventilation of dead space and high VA/Q regions (VA/Q greater than 10) were increased markedly and comprised 74 per cent of minute ventilation. On lung biopsy, all horses showed chronic bronchiolitis with epithelial hyperplasia and metaplasia. Diffuse acinar hyperinflation also was evident at necropsy. There was a significant inverse correlation between the respiratory rate and the fractional ventilation of normal VA/Q regions. Also, there was a significant agreement between the extent of bronchiolar epithelial hyperplasia in necropsy specimens of lungs and the degree of ventilation of high VA/Q regions and dead space. The findings suggest that hyperinflation of the lung due to obstructed airways may be the common denominator of increased ventilation of high VA/Q regions and dead space ventilation and of elevated pulmonary artery pressure in horses with COPD from chronic bronchiolitis.  相似文献
