A 10-mo-old female eland (Taurotragus oryx) at the Wilds exhibited recalcitrant, progressive unilateral uveitis for a 5-wk period, despite constant medical treatment. Unilateral enucleation was performed because of blindness and animal discomfort evidenced by continuous blepharospasm. Histopathologic examination of the eye demonstrated intraocular larvae morphologically consistent with Parelaphostrongylus tenuis, the first known case of intraocular P. tenuis migration. This animal subsequently was euthanatized because of severe, nonresponsive neurologic signs associated with P. tenuis infection.  相似文献

Verminous myeloencephalitis is a rare, but predominately fatal, cause of neurological disease in horses. A 6‐year‐old mare was admitted to the Royal Veterinary College Equine Referral Hospital following acute onset of depression, central unilateral blindness and compromised vision in the opposite eye. Based on pronounced eosinophilic inflammation detected in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and diagnostic imaging findings indicating a space‐occupying lesion within the brain, a presumptive diagnosis of aberrant parasitic migration causing parasitic encephalitis was made. Treatment consisted of anti‐inflammatories and high doses of an anthelmintic. The horse's condition improved, the neurological deficits and observed space‐occupying lesion within the brain resolved completely and the mare returned to full work. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report describing complete recovery from suspected aberrant parasite migration in the CNS and will hopefully encourage treatment of suspected cases in the future.  相似文献

Sperm transit in the female tract is a critical event for the success of fertilization. From their deposition in the vagina to final migration in the oviduct, sperm pass through the different compartments of the genital tract in which they encounter different environments. The cervix and the uterotubal junction (UTJ) are two barriers with different relative importance according to the species. The protein composition, the degree of glycosylation and the hydration of the cervical mucus change during the oestrous cycle. Several sperm surface proteins are associated with their migration through the cervical mucus and the UTJ. Data regarding the interaction of sperm with secretions of the epithelial tissue lining the different compartments of the female genital tract during the sperm transit are reviewed, with a particular emphasis on the migration of sperm through the cervix.  相似文献

Spray application of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) vaccines is a labor- and time-saving means of mass vaccination of layer chickens. Recent assessment of spray characteristics of nozzles commonly used to apply MG vaccine in layer chicken operations has shown that the amount of respirable droplets (< 5 microm) is negligible. Topical application of vaccine onto the eye surface has been suggested as a route of vaccination, but no estimates of vaccine load delivered via spray application were found in the literature. Estimates of eye surface area were developed using digital imaging; 24 layer pullets were used for analysis, and the mean eye surface area, corrected for corneal curvature, was found to be 0.609 cm2. This surface area was then used to estimate vaccine load for commercially available live MG vaccine sprayed through popular nozzles. Less than 3000 colony-forming units can be expected for direct deposition onto the surface of an eye.  相似文献

Unilaterally swollen eyes were histopathologically characterized in four MG-W gerbils. The primary lesions resided in the anterior segment of the eye where neural crest cells play a critical role in embryonic development. They included indistinct filtration angle, unformed canal of Schlemm, hypoplastic iris, and ciliary body. The findings noted in the retina, optic nerve, optic tract, and lateral geniculate nucleus were consistent with the lesions induced following the persistent elevation of intraocular pressure as a result of insufficient drainage of aqueous humor. Thus, the present cases observed in the eyes of MG-W gerbils exemplified the anterior segment dysmorphogenesis associated with inadequate neural crest migration or differentiation, leading to subsequent glaucoma.  相似文献

A 7-year-old, male pony was presented to our facility with progressive corneal opacity and blepharospasm in the right eye. Vision could not be determined. A thread-like parasite was found in the anterior chamber of the eye. Removal of the parasite through the cornea using the aspiration technique could not be accomplished. The parasite was successfully removed by making a stabbing incision, as an alternative, and was identified as belonging to the genus Setaria. In this report, details of the surgical procedures used together with surgical complications have been discussed. Vision was restored in the right eye postoperatively, though local corneal opacity still persists.  相似文献

The frequency of eye infections in the Finnish blue fox population has increased during the past decade. Eye infection may incur economic losses to producers due to reduced selection intensity, but ethical aspects need to be considered as well because eye infection can be quite painful and reduce animal well‐being. The purpose of this study was to determine the potential for genetic selection against susceptibility to eye infection. The data were collected from 2076 blue foxes at the MTT fur animal research station. Genetic parameters were estimated using single‐ and multiple‐trait animal models. The heritability estimate for eye infection was analysed as a binary trait (EYE) and was moderate (0.24 ± 0.07). EYE had a moderate antagonistic genetic correlation (–0.49 ± 0.20) with grading density (thick underfur). The genetic correlation of EYE with grading size or body condition score was estimated without precision, but all size traits had a low antagonistic phenotypic correlation with EYE. Our results suggest that there is genetic variance in susceptibility to EYE, indicating that eye health can be improved through selection. The current recommendation is that the sick animals should be culled immediately. If more efficient selection is needed, the selection index and multiple‐trait animal models can be applied in breeding for better eye health.  相似文献

Commercially reared ostriches at Msengi farm situated in the Chinhoyi area of Mashonaland West province in Zimbabwe were found to be infected with the 'oriental eye fluke', Philopthalmus gralli, in 2001. This was the ist record of the fluke in Zimbabwe. Trials were conducted to identify a suitable drug for the treatment of this fluke. A total of 12 ostriches confirmed to be infected with the fluke through clinical examination of the eyes and identification of the fluke were randomly divided into 3 equal groups, with each group receiving a different treatment protocol. The 3 drugs used were doramectin, levamisole and closantel. Each of the drugs was used in combination with chloramphenicol as an eye ointment. Levamisole was administered topically into the eye whereas doramectin and closantel were administered parenterally as an intramuscular injection. The results indicated a positive response in levamisole-treated birds but there were no noticeable responses to doramectin and closantel treatments.  相似文献

Epidermal growth factor was injected intracamerally into the anterior chamber of the right eye of 9 cats. The central portion of the cornea in 8 of the 9 cats that had been cryoinjured. Effect of epidermal growth factor on the repair of endothelial cells in cats was evaluated by endothelial specular microscopy. Endothelial cell density and corneal thickness were studied quantitatively, as a measure of endothelial cell function. The repair process also was evaluated qualitatively by studying morphologic changes, developing as a result of reendothelialization and return to normal function. Seemingly, differences between rate of healing of cryoinjured eyes injected with epidermal growth factor and that in nontreated eyes were not significant (P = 0.86). The endothelial repair process was characterized by enlargement and migration of adjacent noninjured cells.  相似文献

Aqueous humor is a transparent fluid that fills the anterior and posterior chambers, and the pupil, of the eye. It is produced in the ciliary processes, and exits the eye through two major pathways--the iridocorneal (conventional) outflow, and the uveoscleral (unconventional) outflow. Equilibrium between production and drainage of aqueous humor enables the body to maintain constant intraocular pressure (IOP). Disruption of aqueous outflow, usually through the conventional pathway, results in elevation of IOP. This elevation in IOP is a major risk factor in the pathogenesis of glaucoma, a group of diseases characterized by decreased retinal function and progressive optic nerve damage that may result in blindness. This article reviews the anatomy and physiology of aqueous dynamics in exotic species, the causes, clinical signs and diagnosis of glaucoma, and therapeutic approaches.  相似文献

Observations were made on histological sections of the stomach and small intestine of seven rabbits infected with Trichostrongylus retortaeformis and from one uninfected control rabbit. At 12h post-infection, larvae were found in the small intestine. At first, only a few larvae were observed entering the mucosa through capillaries of the stroma of villi; the majority of larvae remained in the intestinal lumen, within mucus of the crypts. We consider that the presence of the worms in the stroma is the result of a larval migration. From a phyletic point of view, this migration is interpreted as an ancestral memory of the pulmonary migration seen in the primitive Strongylida.  相似文献

Twenty-five crossbred ewes were utilized to examine the timing of embryonic migration relative to maternal recognition of pregnancy. These ewes also were utilized to examine whether ovine embryos synthesized estradiol-17 beta in association with embryonic elongation and intrauterine migration. Embryos were flushed on d 11 through 15 from hemiovariectomized ewes. Recovery of embryos from the uterine horn contralateral to the remaining ovary indicated that migration had occurred. Ewes subsequently were returned with rams to determine their interestrous interval. Recovered embryos were classified morphologically, their length determined and individually incubated. Changes in estradiol within the medium were determined after a 6-h incubation. Embryo migration began on d 14 (P less than .05); on consecutive days from 11 through 15, 0, 0, 0, 60 and 100% of ewes examined, respectively, had an embryo in the contralateral horn. Extended estrous cycles (greater than 20 d) were observed in 0, 0, 40, 80 and 100% of ewes examined (P less than .05) following removal of embryos on d 11 through 15 of the cycle. Ovine embryos were longer (P less than .05) on d 14 (4.8 +/- 1.1 cm length, mean +/- SE) compared with d 13 (.2 +/- .1 cm) and increased further (P less than .05) on d 15 (7.8 +/- 1.1 cm). The distribution of retinal blood vessels in the eye of buffalo was studied macroscopically and microscopically in twenty-two eyes of healthy animals. After macroscopic observation, 12 of 22 eyes were used for histological study. Ten eyes were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and two eyes with PAS stain. The present findings revealed that the eye of the buffalo was characterized by the complex network of retinal blood vessels (holangiotic or euangiotic). The central retinal artery and vein pierced the eye through the optic disc and gave off several branches. There were four pairs of primary vessels that were named dorsal, ventral, nasal and temporal retinal arteries and veins. The veins anastmosed with each other at the optic disc to form a somewhat circle. Three patterns of the distribution of blood vessels were described. The distribution of the arteries and veins was the same.  相似文献

A retrospective study of 182 cases of grass awn migration in dogs and cats seen during a 1-year period was performed. The 182 cases comprised 61% of all foreign body-related cases during that year. Compared with the total hospital population, there was an increased prevalence of grass awn problems in the Springer Spaniel, Golden Retriever, Brittany Spaniel, and Airedale Terrier, but a decreased prevalence in German Shepherd Dogs, Miniature Poodles, and Dachshunds. The most common site of grass awn localization was the external ear canal, involving 51% of grass awn cases. Other common sites of grass awn localization included the interdigital webs, eye, nose, lumbar area, and thoracic cavity. Only 8 of the 182 animals were cats and 7 of the 8 had ocular involvement.  相似文献

Comparative anatomical studies on transepithelial fluid migration into the lumen of the cloaca in birds In the rooster the fluid migration originates principally from lymph capillaries and ends in the interstitium of the lymphfolds. In the male duck, coot and pigeon this phenomenon occurs in a corresponding zone of transudation. In these birds the fluid migration originates principally in blood capillaries, however. From the interstitium the fluid passes through intercellular spaces of the epithelium into the lumen of the cloaca where it appears as a transparent fluid. In all examined species immunocompetent cells migrate into the cloaca with the fluid. These cells produce the immunoglobulins which have been found in the transparent cloacal fluid of the rooster.  相似文献

本试验旨在探讨玉米加工利用的适宜方法,以提高玉米的利用效率。选用120头利木赞杂交阉牛(590 kg±10 kg),随机分为4组,分别饲喂蒸汽压片(A)、粉碎后过七目筛(B)、十目筛(C)和十四目筛(D)的玉米型日粮,研究日粮玉米不同加工方法对阉牛育肥性能的影响。结果表明,玉米不同加工方式对肉牛的生产性能和大多数胴体指标都没有显著影响(P>0.05)。蒸汽压片玉米组的胴体产肉率高于十目筛组,骨重低于十目筛组(P<0.05)。十四目筛组的高档肉块比例和上脑重显著高于其它3个处理组,牛柳重显著低于其它处理组,七目筛组西冷重高于十目筛组(P<0.05)。养殖效益则以十目筛组阉牛最高。  相似文献

Objective To compare the reduction in intraocular pressure (IOP) by topical 2% dorzolamide to oral methazolamide (5 mg/kg) in dogs, and determine if the combination of both drugs would reduce IOP more than either drug administered alone. Animals studied Thirteen glaucomatous beagles. Procedures Measurements, including applanation tonometry, pupil size and heart rate, were obtained at 8 am, 12 noon, and 5 pm on days 1, 3 and 5. The 5‐day drug studies included placebo (0.5% methylcellulose); 2% dorzolamide administered in one eye twice daily (8 am and 5 pm), and repeated again in one eye three times (8 am, 12 noon and 5 pm) daily; methazolamide (5 mg/kg per os administered at 8 am and 5 pm); 2% dorzolamide instilled twice daily (5 days) combined with oral methazolamide on the last 3 days, and methazolamide (5 days) combined with 2% dorzolamide on the last 3 days and instilled twice daily. Statistical comparisons between drug groups included control (nondrug) eye and treated (placebo/drug) eyes for days 1, day 3 and 5. Results Topical 2% dorzolamide, administered twice and three times daily, significantly decreased IOP (mean ± SEM) in glaucomatous dogs on the first day (twice daily 7.6 ± 2.4 mmHg, and three times daily 16.4 ± 3.6 mmHg) that was even greater by day 5 (twice daily 10.4 ± 2.0 mmHg, and three times daily 13.9 ± 2.7). Oral methazolamide also significantly lowered IOP in both eyes. Oral methazolamide (administered from day 1 through to day 5) combined with 2% topical dorzolamide (instilled in the drug eye for day 3 through to day 5) also significantly lowered IOP of both eyes for all days, and for day 5 the mean ± SEM IOP was decreased by 7.9 ± 1.7 mmHg (methazolamide plus dorzolamide) and 7.5 ± 2.6 mmHg (methazolamide only). Topical dorzolamide (instilled in the drug eye for day 1 through to day 5) combined with oral methazolamide (administered from day 3 through to day 5) significantly lowered IOP in the drug eye on day 1 (5 pm: 9.6 ± 1.9 mmHg), for day 3 (11 am and 5 pm) and for all of day 5 for both eyes (5 pm: control eye 9.5 ± 1.8 mmHg; drug eye 9.2 ± 1.9 mmHg). Topical dorzolamide (2%) instilled three times daily produces similar IOP declines compared to the combination of oral methazolamide and 2% dorzolamide administered twice daily. Conclusions Dorzolamide (2%) instilled twice or three times daily causes significant decreases in IOP in glaucomatous dogs. Twice daily instillations caused progressive declines in IOP from day 1 to day 5. Dorzolamide (2%) combined with oral methazolamide (5 mg/kg per os twice daily) produces similar but not additional declines in IOP.  相似文献
