Interspecific hybridization offers potential to improve the hydroxy fatty acid (HFA) content of lesquerella. Lesquerella fendleri is currently being developed for cultivation as a potential new industrial oilseed crop because of its seed productivity. However, it has lower HFA content compared to L. pallida and L. lindheimeri. The objectives of this research were to improve the HFA oil content of L. fenderi through interspecific hybridization and to characterize hybrids and successive generations for seed oil fatty acid profile, fertility, seed set and other morphological traits. In this work, three species were successfully hybridized, self-pollinated, and backcrossed. Ovule culture was used in some cases to produce progeny where interspecific hybrids did not produce viable embryos. The traits measured were petal length, ovules per silique, seeds per silique, and weight of 1000 seed. Patterns of leaf trichomes were used to distinguish between parents and hybrids. Seed per silique indicated that autofertility occurred in L. pallida but not in the other two species. HFA oil content of L. fendleri seed were 50.5% compared to 80 and 84% for L. pallida and L. lindheimeri, respectively. The HFA oil content of the hybrids ranged from 57 to 70% in A2 and A3 generations, and the range of values depended on the parents used in the crosses. These measurements will help predict the value of different interspecific crosses for breeding. Segregation for various yield related traits should allow selection for favorable improvements in the HFA trait and in seed yield.  相似文献

Interspecific hybrids and backcross generations between the wild perennial species Helianthus resinosus, Helianthus paucifiorus, Helianthus laevigatus, Helianthus nuttallii ssp. nuttallii T. & G. and Helianthus giganteus, resistant to broomrape (Orobanche cernua) and susceptible inbred lines were obtained to study crossability to cultivated sunflower and the transmission and expression of resistance to this parasitic weed. Conventional crosses with all the species tested were successful except for the crosses with diploid H. giganteus, for which embryo rescue techniques were needed to overcome hybrid incompatibility. Pollen viability and seed set were highest for F1 hybrids with hexaploid species and lowest for those with the diploid H. giganteus. We evaluated F1, BC1F1, some BC2F1 plants and the wild and cultivated parents. The wild species and interspecific hybrids were resistant to broomrape infection except for H. nuttallii, which showed segregation, indicating that the resistance is dominant. The crossability and resistance of F1, and back-cross generations of species with different ploidy levels indicate that the transfer of broomrape resistance to cultivated sunflower is feasible.  相似文献

Summary Morphological and cytogenetical studies were carried out on the F1 and F2 hybrids and backcross derivatives of the interspecific cross Capsicum baccatum L. x C. frutescens L. The F1 and F2 hybrids displayed irregular meiosis with a maximum association of eight chromosomes in the former and one quadrivalent in the latter with the appropriate number of bivalents and univalents. It is inferred that C. baccatum differs from C. frutescens (yellow) by at least tow or three interchanges and from the white cultivar by a single interchange. Structural repatterning of chromosomes, erratic meiotic behaviour, genes for pollen sterility, segregational imbalances following intergenomic recombination are believed to be major factors causing sterility in the hybrids. The two species are sympatric and natural hybrids have not been realised.  相似文献

Interspecific hybridization is known to improve productivity and resistance to diseases in many crops. Therefore, an attempt was made to introgress productivity and disease resistance into chickpea from wild Cicer species. The true F1 hybrids of cultivated chickpea genotypes ‘L550’ and ‘FGK45’ with C. reticulatum were backcrossed twice to their cultivated female parents to minimize the linkage drag of undesirable wild traits. The pedigree method was followed to advance the segregating populations from straight crosses (without backcross) and BC1/BC2 generations to F5–F7. The interspecific derivatives recorded up to a 16.9% increase over the check cultivars and a 25.2% increase over the female parent in a preliminary yield evaluation trial. Of the 22 interspecific derivatives thus derived, four desi and two kabuli lines were further evaluated for seed yield in replicated trials at three diverse locations. These lines possess a high degree of resistance to wilt, foot rot and root rot diseases, and recorded a 6.1–17.0% seed yield increase over the best check cultivars.  相似文献

Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L. or A. palustris Huds.) is a highly outcrossing allotetraploid species. It can form hybrids with a number of other Agrostis species and Polypogon genus. However, cytology and pollen grain fertility of the creeping bentgrass interspecific and intergeneric hybrids are not well known. In this research, chromosome pairing behaviors during meiosis I in F1 and pollen viability of F1 hybrids, as well as seed set rate and seed germination rate of backcrosses were studied in hybrids between creeping bentgrass, and other bentgrass species and three species of Polypogon genus. Abnormal chromosome pairing, laggard chromosomes, and premature segregation in F1 hybrids were found. Pollen viability ranged from 1.6 to 48.5% amongst F1 hybrids, significantly lower than that of the parents (85.5–94.1%). Some hybrids produced pollens of different sizes within the same anther. Seed set following backcrosses using F1 hybrids as the male parent and creeping bentgrass as the recurrent parent was significantly lower than their parents. The study of chromosome paring behaviors and progeny fecundity are important in utilizing the alien genes to improve bio-stress and abio-stress resistance, and in assessing the potential transgene risks of creeping bentgrass.  相似文献

Wild relatives are a potential source of genetic diversity to lentil (Lens culinaris Medik). The objective of this research was to obtain viable interspecific hybrids between the domesticated lentil and its wild relatives. The paper details the results of a number of interspecific crosses among L. culinaris, L. orientalis, L. odemensis, L. ervoides and L. nigricans. Viable hybrids were produced between L. culinaris × L. orientalis, L. culinaris × L. nigricans, L. culinaris × L. ervoides and between L. culinaris × L. odemensis. Further viable hybrids were obtained between L. culinaris and L. ervoides, which have the potential to be a ‘bridge’ in hybridization to L. culinaris for specific L. nicrigans lines which proved recalcitrant in L. culinaris × L. nigricans crosses. This is the first time that four wild species of lentils have been used successfully in hybridization with cultivated lentils, and viable hybrids produced. This paper also suggests that the artificial supplement of GA3, hormone is needed after fertilization for the normal growth of the hybrid embryo, possibly as the natural GA3 production is restricted with alien pollinations in cultivated lentils in both F1 and backcross hybrids.  相似文献

Although the wild sunflower species Helianthus laevigatus has not been extensively studied it may be considered for sunflower breeding as a potential source of desirable genes for Sclerotinia stalk rot resistance and high contents of proteins and linoleic acid in the seed. A set of six H. laevigatus populations was crossed to cultivated sun~ower lines and produced nine F1 (2-14 plants) and 66 BC1F1 hybrid combinations (1-13 plants). Male sterility occurred in F1 and BC1F1 hybrid combinations and pollen viability was lower in the progenies than in the parents (51.6-77.2%in F1 and in F1 and 4.8-34.0% in BC1F1). Meiosis was normal in the H. laevigatus populations It was found that this tetraploid species also occurred in a hexaploid form Numerous irregularities were observed in the meiosis of the F1 interspecific hybrids During diakinesis, quadrivalents and hexavalents were recorded in addition to bivalents Dislocated chromosomes and chromosome bridges were present in the other phases The chromosome number in F1 was 68 (tetraploid). Irregularities in chromosome pairing were observed in the interspecific hybrids at BC1F1. There were many univalents, and trivalents quadrivalents and hexavalents were also present The chromosome number in the BC1F1 generation ranged from 34 to 60. The occurrence of meiotic irregularities in the F1 and BC1F1 interspecific hybrids indicates that H. laevigatus and the cultivated sunflower differ in genome constitution.  相似文献

Ethiopian mustard (Brassica carinata Braun) is a potential oil crop in which genes for low erucic acid content of the seed oil have not yet been found. In order to solve this problem the potential of rapeseed (B. napus L.) varieties as a source of these genes has been tested. Reciprocal F1 hybrids between B. carinata and a low erucic acid variety of B. napus, F2, and backcrosses with B. carinata were obtained. The fatty acid composition was determined in half seeds of F1 and segregating generations from reciprocal interspecific crosses. The genetic analysis indicated that the erucic acid content of the seed oil of B. carinata is controlled by two genes with no dominance and additive in action.  相似文献

The ability of 13 Nemesia species (six annual and seven perennial) to sexually hybridize was investigated. Six of the perennial Nemesia species investigated were inter-fertile with one another. Two of the annual species, N. macroceras and N. strumosa, were inter-fertile. Thirty three crosses were successful and resulted in viable seeds. The analysis of meiotic chromosome behaviour in interspecific hybrids indicated that Nemesia chromosomes in different parental species were homeologous. No evidence of chromosome inversions or chromosome translocations was observed during meiosis in interspecific hybrids between the six perennial Nemesia species. In the hybrids produced between N. macroceras and N. strumosa, a quadrivalent was observed during meiotic metaphase I, indicating that these two species differ by a reciprocal translocation. A successful hybridization was made between N. anisocarpa (annual) and N. foetans (perennial), producing two triploid hybrids. In the unsuccessful crosses, pollen tubes were observed entering ovaries and ovules, suggesting that post-fertilization barriers were preventing sexual hybridization. Many of these crosses produced nonviable, shrunken, empty seeds, suggesting that endosperm breakdown and embryo abortion prevent interspecific hybridization in unsuccessful crosses. The manipulation of ploidy levels in N. fruticans and N. strumosa and tissue culture of N. strumosa × N. fruticans ovules failed to overcome post-fertilization barriers between these species.  相似文献

Summary Phylogenetic relations among the three species in grain amaranth need investigation to provide information for breeding experiments germplasm conservation efforts, and decision on evolutionary patterns in the grain types. Hybrid development from crosses between species was studied to find out genetic relationship between them. Interspecific crosses were made among Amaranthus hypochondriacus, A. caudatus and A. cruentus in the glasshouse. The F1 plants were relatively easy to obtain but had low pollen fertility (10.3–15.1%) and low seed set. A few of these hybrids did not produce seeds. Only a few F1 seeds obtained in crosses between A. cruentus and A. caudatus. All the F1 plants from these crosses died at the seedling stage. Crosses between A. cruentus and A. hypochondriacus produced few seeds. Most of the F1 plants obtained from the seeds died at the seedling stage with only four plants growing to maturity but were sterile. Based on hybrid development, it was suggested that A. hypochondriacus and A. caudatus were genetically closer than the other two combinations of species studied. A. cruentus seemed to be genetically closer to A. hypochondriacus than it was to A. caudatus.Research was supported by Grand No. AMA-KE-4-83-22. Summary The production, vigour, and fertility of F1 hybrids between nine African species of the genus Cucumis L. were studied as a measure of the relationships between the species. Hybrid plants were obtained from 29 out of the 72 possible cross combinations. Two F1 hybrids died as seedlings, and 27 hybrids were raised to maturity. Pollen production and stainability varied greatly amongst these hybrids, as did fruit and seed set following self pollination and backcrossing with either parental species. The fruit shape of the hybrids was always intermediate between that of both parental species.Two species appeared to be closely related: C. prophetarum L. and C. anguria var. longipes A. Meeuse. Most other species produced highly to moderately fertile F1 hybrids with at least one other species. C. metuliferus Naud. produced only sterile hybrids with C. zeyheri Sond. 2x. The results sustain the recent taxonomic classification of the genus (Jeffrey, 1980).  相似文献

Records of the set of seeds obtained from intraspecific cassava crosses, from interspecific crosses between other Manihot species and cassava, and from backcrosses to cassava of three generations of interspecific hybrids are used to assess the variation in pollen and ovule fertility. It is concluded that the capacity of cassava varieties to set seeds has been reduced since they have evolved from non-tuberous wild forms and have been propagated vegetatively. Fertility was found to be very variable, and the capacity of the pollen of a variety to promote seed-set was not related to the fertility of the variety's female flowers. This situation would be expected if reduction in the fertilities of the two sexes were caused either by loss of balance in the genes controlling the functioning of the male gametophyte, or by unbalance of those concerned with the functioning of the female gametophyte or the tissues which nurture the embryo. Additional causes of sterility, probably including meiotic irregularities, appeared to operate in the F1 interspecific hybrids, but such factors were probably not important after the first backcross generation. Manihot melanobasis, a wild form which is normally propagated by seed and whose relationship to cassava should be regarded as subspecific, contributed factors which enhanced the fertility of its hybrids with cassava. This form could be used in cassava breeding as a donor of seed fertility, but use could also be made of some existing varieties which still possess a moderately high capacity to set seed. It is desirable to select these as one parent when making difficult crosses.This paper is based almost entirely on the records of the late R. F. W. Summary By crossing amphimictic P. longifolia and apomictic P. pratensis fertile hybrids were obtained. In F2 populations a vast range of types was observed. New combinations were found, which is shown by data on plant length and hairiness of the lemma. Crossing F1 hybrids with P. pratensis gave more P. pratensis-like plants. Data on seed yield, uniformity and turf performance in later generations are given. The implications for breeding are discussed and it is concluded that interspecific crosses can be used for introducing a sexual phase in P. pratensis breeding. The successful interspecific cross is reported for the first time between kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.), a diploid species (2n=36) and roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.), a tetraploid species (2n=72). Kenaf, grown for its bast fiber and also under investigation as a source of paper pulp, is fast-growing and well adapted to mechanical harvesting, but susceptible to root-knot nematodes. Roselle, also grown for its bast fiber, is slower growing, not well adapted to mechanical harvesting, but certain varieties are resistant to root-knot nematodes. Five hybrid plants were produced from the pollination of 4,445 flowers of kenaf with pollen from roselle; no hybrid plants were produced from 2,655 pollinations made in the reciprocal direction. One line of roselle was the parent of 3 of the 5 hybrids; one line of kenaf was the parent of 2 of these 3. The F1 hybrids were triploid, and varied in vigor, growth habit and vegetative morphology, but had similar flowers. Two of the F1 hybrids showed high pollen fertility, apparently as a result of restitution at first meiotic division leading to unreduced spores. These two hybrids each produced a small amount of seed, which gave rise to an F2 population of 22 plants. The F2 plants vary in vigor but are morphologically uniform, have thick leaves with mosaic sectors, and are presumably spontaneous allohexaploids. The theoretical possibilities of increasing the percentage of recovery of the F1 interspecific hybrids and of developing a synthesized hybrid variety useful for bast fiber and paper pulp are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Colchicine induced tetraploid (2n=4x=36) Brachiaria ruziziensis were used as female parent in crosses with apomictic tetraploid species (2n=4x=36) Brachiaria decumbens and Brachiaria brizantha. Tetraploid B. ruziziensis pollinated with B. decumbens set significantly more seed than selfed or crossed with B. brizantha. The crossability between B. ruziziensis and B. decumbens is also better than between B. ruziziensis and B. brizantha. In addition, hybrid seedlings obtained in crosses involving B. brizantha are more frequently lethal. All the viable F1 hybrids are tetraploid with 36 chromosomes. Meiotic chromosome behaviour suggest that the three species belong to the same genomic group and therefore the same agamic complex. Chromosome associations at metaphase I do not allow to identify fertile and sterile hybrids. The interspecific hybrids averaged a lower fertility than their female parent, but some hybrids were more fertile than their apomictic male parent.  相似文献

Summary Five parents from each of four race groups of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were hybridized to produce five crosses within each group. Also, five crosses were made for each of the six possible combinations among four groups. Parents, F1 and F2, and parents, F2 and F3 were evaluated for seed yield in 1990 and 1991, respecitively, at two locations in Colombia.Yield of parents belonging to Middle American races and crosses among them was higher than that of races of Andean origin. Positive correlations were found among the mid-parent value, F1, F2 and F3. Also, the mid-parent value predicted the mean seed yield of all possible lines that could be derived from the F-generation in 42 out of 47 crosses. Four crosses, all between common bean races of Andean and Middle American origin, indicated a possible loss of favorable epistatic parental alleles. On average, mean yield of interracial F1 hybrids was higher than that of intraracial ones.Positive heteroris (26.4%–123.8%) over the mid-parent in 31 crosses, and F1s yielding higher (23.7%–91.8%) than the high parent in 20 crosses and yielding higher (22.1%–53.2%) than the highest control among all parents (MAM 13) in 12 crosses, were found. Heritability, estimated by the parent-offspring regression, ranged from 0.42± 0.07 to 0.49±0.04. Expected and realized gains from selection (at 20% selection pressure) ranged from 10.3% to 21.0% over the mean of F1 hybrids and F2 and F3 population bulks.  相似文献

Summary Interspecific crosses were carried out between the three Lactuca species L. virosa, L. serriola and L. sativa to transfer resistance to the leaf aphid Nasonovia ribis nigri from L. virosa to the cultivated lettuce. L. sativa, L. serriola was used as an intermediate parent between the other two species. Many irregularities were observed in the interspecific hybrids, ranging from premature dying of F1 plants resulting from a kind of bastard necrosis till complete male and female sterility and deviating microsporogenesis. Using in vitro culture and after several backcrosses male and female fertile plants were obtained with a L. sativa habit and with resistance to the leaf aphid.  相似文献

Summary Crosses between a wild species C. chacoense and three cultivated species of chili pepper viz. C. annuum, C. frutescens and C. chinense yielded hybrids when C. chacoense was the seed parent but the reciprocal crosses were unsuccessful. C. chacoense × C. annuum F1 hybrids were partly fertile and therefore an F2 population could be raised; the other two F1 hybrids were totally sterile. Chromosome pairing in the F1 plants resulted largely in bivalents and a few multivalents and univalents. The genomes of the four species share large homologies and the role of chromosome structural changes in genome differentiation is suggested. Hybrid sterility is the major reproductive isolation mechanism.  相似文献

A Solatium tuberosum dihaploid that proved to be a 2n pollen producer, exhibited two types of meiotic abnormality involved in 2n pollen formation: premature cytokinesis at prophase II and parallel/tripolar spindles in meiosis II. For this reason such a dihaploid was preferentially used as a seed parent in crosses with the diploid species S. tarijense, S. sanctae-rosae, and S. phureja. Diploid interspecific hybrids were evaluated for male fertility, for 2n pollen production and stability over three years and for meiotic nuclear restitution mechanisms. Pollen stainability ranged from 6 to 85% and 2n pollen from 5 to 35% among hybrids. The meiotic mechanism generating 2n pollen was that of spindle abnormality in meiosis II and consequent dyad/triad formation. High correlation was found between fused/parallel spindles and dyads.  相似文献

Summary The taxonomy of the genus Elaeis is reviewed. E. guineensis and E. oleifera were found to hybridize. Interspecific barriers were only partially developed as was evident from reduced seed set in the interspecific cross and occasional incomplete pairing of chromosomes in the F1 hybrids.
