The use of melatonin to advance the onset of seasonal oestrus is potentially useful for early lamb production. A number of delivery systems for melatonin have been developed and this study evaluates an intraruminal soluble glass bolus under field conditions. Anoestrous, non-lactating mule and Dorset cross mule ewes were treated in late June with two types of bolus of different solubilities (melatonin 1, 'slow release' and melatonin 2, 'extra slow release'). Rams were introduced in mid-August for a target lambing pattern in mid-January. The percentage pregnancy/lambing rates were 80/78, 97/92 and 100/100 in the control, melatonin 1 and melatonin 2 groups, respectively. The number of lambs born per ewe put to the ram was significantly increased by treatment with melatonin 2 (P less than 0.05) from 1.17 to 1.64 in the mule ewes and 1.64 to 1.72 in the Dorset cross mule ewes. The melatonin containing soluble glass bolus is a novel and convenient method of reducing the number of barren ewes in an early lambing flock.  相似文献

The role of melatonin as a protective neurohormone against restoring cyclicity in summer anoestrous animals in photoperiod species has gained wider acceptance. This study was designed to uncover the evidence the slow‐release melatonin (MLT) has on initiation of ovarian cyclicity and conception rate (CR) in summer anoestrous buffaloes. Thus, buffaloes diagnosed as summer anoestrous (absence of overt signs of oestrus, concurrent rectal examination and radioimmunoassay for serum progesterone at 10 days interval) were grouped as untreated (Group I, sterilized corn oil, n = 8) and treated (Group II, single subcutaneous injection of MLT @18 mg/50 kg bwt in sterilized corn oil, n = 20). Animals treated and detected in oestrus were artificially inseminated (AI) followed by division into Group III (second dose of MLT on 5th day post‐AI, n = 8) and Group IV (no melatonin administration, n = 10). Blood samples were collected at 4 days interval for estimation of serum MLT, progesterone and oestrogen using radioimmunoassay kit. Mean oestrous induction rate (OIR), oestrous induction interval (OII), interoestrous interval (IOI) and CR were estimated. Compared to control, concentration of melatonin was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in treated group ranging from 14.34 ± 1.72 to 412.31 ± 14.47 pg/ml whereas other two hormones did not show any concentration difference. Melatonin‐administered buffaloes showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher (90%) OIR with OII of 18.06 ± 1.57 days. Results showed improvement in conception rate in buffaloes administered with post‐insemination melatonin. It can be concluded from the study that slow‐release melatonin supplementation restored cyclicity in summer anoestrous animals resulting in improvement in conception rate in buffaloes.  相似文献

We studied the reproductive effects of administration of a long-acting antiparasitic (moxidectin) given to pre-pubertal ewe-lambs in Greece at the beginning of the reproductive season. 45 animals, naturally infected with trichostrongylids, were allocated into treated (n=30, treatment on D0, 21 June) or control (n=15) group. Rams of confirmed fertility, were introduced from 15 August (D55) to 20 December (D182) into the ewe-lambs. Throughout the study (performed at latitude N 36°26', in a flock free from brucellosis, Chlamydophila infection and toxoplasmosis), epg counts were monitored and reproductive performance of ewes was assessed. Up to D112, arithmetic mean epg counts in treated animals were 0; thereafter and up to D350, they were 23-473. Respective figures for controls were 190-977 epg. Reproductive performance parameters for treated and control animals respectively, were as follows; median 'Interval to first mating after ram introduction': 36.5 d and 71.0 (P=0.04); median 'Age at first mating': 8.5m and 10.0m (P=0.045); 'Cycling rate': 20.0% and 6.7% (P=0.03); 'Mating rate': 86.7% and 66.7%; 'Return-to-oestrus rate': 26.7% and 26.7%; 'Abortion rate': 3.3% and 0%; 'Lambing rate': 83.3% and 66.7%; 'Total lambs born per ewe' and 'Liveborn lambs born per ewe': 1.5 and 1.1 (P=0.01); 'Stillbirth rate' 0% and 0% and 'Lamb bodyweight per ewe': 5.0 kg and 3.8 kg (P=0.005). Anthelmintic treatment of pre-pubertal ewes, in order to maximise reproductive performance may be employed as a management strategy according to targets set in individual flocks.  相似文献

Crossbred ewe and wether lambs were used to evaluate the effects of a normal, nocturnal elevation in the concentration of melatonin in the serum on immunological functions. The nocturnal elevation in melatonin was eliminated by exposing half the lambs to constant light (LL), whereas the remainder received a 12-h light, 12-h dark cycle (LD). Immune function was challenged by treating half the lambs in LL and half of the lambs in LD with dexamethasone (DEX; .04 mg/kg); the remainder of the lambs received only a saline vehicle (SAL). The resulting treatment combinations were designated LD+SAL (n = 5), LD+DEX (n = 5), LL+SAL (n = 5), and LL+DEX (n = 5). Lambs were stanchioned individually in environmental rooms; photoperiod treatments commenced on that day (d -14). Also on d -14, lambs were given 1 mg ovalbumin/lamb in adjuvant. Lambs were given a booster injection of .5 mg ovalbumin/lamb on d 0. Treatments with DEX and SAL also began on d 0 and were repeated every 48 h through d 14. Catheters were placed in the jugular vein of all lambs on d 12; samples of plasma and serum were collected hourly from 0800 on d 14 to 0800 on d 15; plasma was assayed for adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and serum was assayed for cortisol and melatonin. In addition, samples of serum obtained at 0800 on d 15 were used to evaluate antibody titers to ovalbumin. Samples of whole blood also were obtained at 0800 on d 15, and total and differential leukocyte numbers and production of interleukin-2 (IL-2) by lymphocytes were determined.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Eighteen helminth-free lambs were randomly allocated to six groups of three. Each lamb was dosed with 3300 infective larvae pooled from two isolates of Nematodirus spathiger known to be benzimidazole resistant. One lamb from each group was treated with oral ivermectin, one with oral oxfendazole and one left untreated 21 days after infection. All lambs were humanely killed 14 days later and small intestine worm counts performed. No Nematodirus were found in the ivermectin-treated lambs. Nematodirus numbers were reduced by 13% in oxfendazole-treated lambs relative to the control lambs.  相似文献

Seasonally anestrous Suffolk ewes (n = 28) were randomly divided into 5 groups and treated with varying doses of melatonin as follows; Groups C (n = 4), M1 (n = 6), M2 (n = 6), M3 (n = 6), M4 (n = 6) of ewes were fed pellets containing 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 mg melatonin, respectively, daily for 60 days from May 17 (Day 0). Following feeding of the pellets at 13.00 hr plasma levels of melatonin rapidly increased reaching the peak values within 30 min, which ranged from 92.0 to 292.7 pg/ml and were highly correlated with the dose of melatonin administered (r = 0.986, P less than 0.01). Maximum dose of melatonin (4 mg) produced an increase of plasma melatonin similar in magnitude to nocturnal peaks of endogenous secretion. The onset of ovulatory cyclicity, assessed from plasma progesterone profiles, was advanced by melatonin administration. The mean +/- SEM intervals from the commencement of melatonin treatment until the onset of ovulatory cyclicity were 53.0 +/- 5.8, 53.6 +/- 2.5, 42.0 +/- 5.6 and 44.3 +/- 4.3 days for the Groups M1, M2, M3 and M4, respectively, which were shorter (M1, P less than 0.05; M2, M3 & M4, P less than 0.01) than that for the Group C (72.5 +/- 1.4 days). The melatonin treatment also suppressed, in a dose related manner, the rise in plasma prolactin under the lengthening photoperiod. We conclude that the dose-related efficacy of melatonin could be ascribed to the difference in the diurnal profiles of circulating melatonin.  相似文献

AIMS: As sex related differences in opioid-induced elevations of nociceptive thresholds have been observed in sheep, a study was undertaken to determine if puberty, oestrus, pregnancy or administration of the hormones oestrogen and testosterone had any effect on these differences. METHODS: Withdrawal latency to a nociceptive thermal source was measured in Romney cross sheep consisting of lambs (n = 6) prior to and after their first oestrus, ram lambs (n = 6) prior to and after puberty, non-oestrous ewes (n = 6), oestrous ewes (n = 6), pregnant and subsequently suckling ewes (n = 12), wethers (n = 6) and rams (n = 6). The effects of a kappa opioid agonist (GR 89696), oestradiol benzoate, testosterone and saline on this withdrawal latency were tested in all groups. RESULTS: GR 89696 increased withdrawal latency in all animals, compared to saline, but this was most marked in ewes, particularly those in oestrus or in late pregnancy. Testosterone and oestradiol had no effect on their own, or in combination, on the withdrawal latency seen with saline alone. Oestradiol increased the effects of GR 89696 on lambs pre-pubertal ram lambs, ewes and wethers but not on post-pubertal ram lambs nor rams. Co-administration of testosterone antagonised this oestradiol effect. CONCLUSION: The efficacy of kappa opioids appears to be affected by animal sex, an effect that can be contributed to by both oestradiol and testosterone.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate characterization of oestrous response, onset of induced oestrus, oestrous duration, fecundity and fertility in Awassi ewes treatment with intravaginal sponges and Controlled Intravaginal Drug Release (CIDR) devices in combination with pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) under local environmental conditions during the non‐breeding season. A total of 62 ewes were divided into three groups. Group CIDR (n = 20) was treated with CIDR devices for 12 days and 400 IU PMSG was injected upon removal of the CIDR. For ewes in Group Sponge (SP) (n = 24), 30 mg fluorogestone acetate was administered to the sheep for 12 days and 400 IU PMSG was injected upon withdrawal of the sponge. Group Control (CON) (n = 18) served as a control group and received no treatment. Adult, intact and sexually experienced Awassi rams were introduced to all groups at the time when the intravaginal devices were removed. There were no significant differences in terms of oestrous response (CIDR: 90%, SP: 87.5%), time to onset of oestrus and duration of induced oestrus between the CIDR and SP groups. The oestrous response of treatment groups was significantly greater (p < 0.05) than in the control ewes. There were no significant differences in pregnancy (CIDR: 70%, SP: 70.8%), lambing (CIDR: 85%, SP: 79.2%) and fecundity rates between ewes treated with CIDR and those treated with sponges. However, pregnancy and lambing rates were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in ewes treated with CIDR or sponges when compared with those in the control group. It was concluded that it is possible to induce fertile oestrus, successful pregnancy and lambing with the treatment of either CIDR or intravaginal sponge in combination with PMSG in Awassi ewes during the non‐breeding season.  相似文献

There is a need for a safe, effective and practical method of oestrus suppression in the mare. The aim of this study was to monitor ovarian activity in mares exposed to either 9.4 or 28.2 mg deslorelin acetate, a GnRH agonist, in the form of a sustained-release implant. Following oestrus synchronisation, mares were randomly assigned to one of three groups (n = 4 per group) and administered either one (Des1 group; 9.4 mg) or three (Des3 group; 28.2 mg) implants of deslorelin acetate (Suprelorin-12, Virbac Australia) or one blank implant (Control group; Virbac Australia). Mares underwent weekly blood sampling for 12 weeks following implant placement (Day 0–Day 84), with transrectal palpation and ultrasonography of the reproductive tract at all sampling timepoints except Days 56, 70 and 77. All mares showed baseline serum progesterone concentrations (SPC; ≤1.3 nmol/L or 0.4 ng/ml) on Day 0. Cycling Control mares showed typical oestrous cyclicity characterised by peaks and troughs in SPC over time. Four of eight treated mares demonstrated a sustained elevation in SPC after the initial ovulation after implant placement; SPC declined to baseline levels (Des1 group; 2 mares) or remained elevated (Des3 group; 2 mares) at the final sampling timepoint on Day 84. Oestrous cyclicity was erratic in three of the remaining four treated mares. In total, 87.5% (7 of 8) of treated mares showed atypical oestrous cyclicity after implant placement. These results suggest that deslorelin acetate disrupts oestrous cyclicity in the mare, which warrants further research.  相似文献

The objective of the experiment was to determine the effectiveness of copper oxide wire particles (COWP) in pregnant ewes and safety to lambs. COWP have been used recently as an anthelmintic in small ruminants to overcome problems associated with nematode resistance to chemical dewormers. Doses of COWP (相似文献

The effect of prolonged exposure to exogenous melatonin on the reproductive status and growth rate of ewe lambs was investigated. Ewe lambs (born late March) were given intravaginal melatonin implants on 4 July (group J, n = 10) during anoestrus, or 20 December (group D, n = 10) during the breeding season. A third group (group C, n = 7) received empty implants on 4 July. Plasma progesterone concentrations were used to assess reproductive status. In the control group cyclic ovarian activity began on November 15 +/- 4 days, and ceased on January 28 +/- 8 days. In group J the onset of the breeding season was advanced by 4.9 weeks (occurring on October 12 +/- 4 days; P less than 0.001). The onset of anoestrus was also advanced in this group with 9 out of 10 of the ewes ceasing ovarian activity at least 3.4 weeks in advance of the control ewes (P less than 0.01). In contrast the timing of anoestrus was unchanged in group D, occurring on February 14 +/- 6 days. Melatonin treatment of ewe lambs from early July had no effect on growth rate, whereas treatment from mid-December had a depressive effect. Ewes therefore become refractory to the inductive effects of exogenous melatonin after long-term exposure. The results are consistent with the view that photorefractoriness is due to changes in the processing rather than the generation of the melatonin signal.  相似文献

Oestrus synchronisation, fertility and kidding behaviour were studied in 44 Black Bengal goats. They were divided into six experimental groups: group 1, control; group 2, progesterone; group 3, progesterone, pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) and human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG); group 4, prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha); group 5, PGF2 alpha, PMSG and HCG; group 6, PMSG and HCG. There was 100 per cent synchronisation of oestrus in the groups treated with progesterone, progesterone with PMSG and HCG, and prostaglandin with PMSG and HCG. In the other two treated groups the synchronisation was between 66 and 75 per cent. In the control group only 50 per cent of the animals came into oestrus during the period of observation. The duration of oestrus varied between 19 and 24 hours except in group 5 where it was 40.87 hours. Animals came on heat between 95 and 137 hours after treatment except in group 5 where the interval was only 18.87 hours. A maximum fertility of 75 per cent was observed in group 4 while the kidding percentage was greatest in group 2. There appeared to be no beneficial effect of superovulation on the number of kids produced. Gestation length was similar in all the groups.  相似文献

SUMMARY Effects of body weight, condition score, ovarian cyclic status and insemination regimen on pregnancy rates were investigated in 164 Bos indicus heifers synchronised with norgestomet-oestradiol and pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG). Oestrus detection techniques were also compared. Heifers were inseminated at either a fixed time (group 1, n = 83) of 48.0 ± 0.2 h (mean ± SEM) after implant removal or at 8.9 ± 0.5 h after oestrus was detected (group 2, n = 81). Group 2 heifers that were not detected in oestrus by 72 h after implant removal were inseminated at that time. Oestrus was detected for the purpose of insemination using heatmount detectors. Tail-paint and oestrogen treated, chin-ball harnessed steers were used to compare the efficiency of oestrus detection. The probability of ovarian cyclicity increased with increasing body weight and condition score (P < 0.001). A higher proportion of heifers that were acyclic at the commencement of treatment, compared with cyclic heifers, were detected in oestrus at the time of insemination in the fixed-time inseminated group (P <0.01). Analysis of covariance revealed that intervals from implant removal to oestrus were influenced by ovarian cyclic status (P < 0.01) and insemination group (P < 0.05). A higher pregnancy rate (%± SEM) was obtained in acyclic compared with cyclic heifers in the group 1 heifers (50.0 ± 10 vs 28.1 ± 6; P = 0.055) but not among the group 2 heifers (45.8 ± 10 vs 49.1 ± 7; P = 0.787). The probability of pregnancy was found to be associated negatively with body weight (P = 0.01) while a higher pregnancy rate was obtained in the group 2 compared with group 1 heifers (48.2%vs 34.9%; P = 0.093). The efficiency of oestrus detection was highest using heatmount detectors compared with tail-paint and chin-ball harnessed steers (90.7%vs 37.0% and 23.5%, respectively; P < 0.0001). We conclude that pregnancy rates can be increased in extensive environments when insemination follows oestrus detection using heatmount detectors compared with a fixed-time insemination. The fertility of heifers inseminated at a fixed time is influenced by ovarian cyclic status due to its influence on oestrus-to-insemination intervals.  相似文献

Because of a high prevalence of anthelmintic resistance and consumer demand for chemical free meat products, management tools to minimize the need for deworming are needed. The objective was to examine the effectiveness of grazing sericea lespedeza (SL) in a mixed grass or a pure forage system for control of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN); in other words pasture systems included grass, grass plus SL, or SL alone (Experiments 2 and 3). Selective use of copper oxide wire particles (COWP) based on the FAMACHA(?) system was used to aid in GIN control. In Experiment 1, lambs co-grazed bermudagrass (BG; n=21) or SL in a mixed grass pasture (SLM; n=22) with dams for 14 days. In Experiment 2, lambs grazed BG (n=14), SLM (n=13), or pure SL (SLP; n=13) pastures for 56 days. In Experiment 3, doe kids grazed BG (n=12), SLM (n=13), or SLP (n=13) for 84 days. Animals were fed a 16% crude protein supplement based on NRC requirements and estimated forage quality of pastures, so that 454, 389, and 200 g/lamb (Experiment 2), or 454, 300, and 150 g of supplement/goat (Experiment 3) was fed to BG, SLM, and SLP, respectively. Animals were dewormed with COWP if FAMACHA(?) was >3. Coprocultures were conducted to identify GIN genus. In Experiment 1, FEC were reduced in lambs grazing SLM compared with BG pastures. In Experiment 2, FEC were reduced in SLP compared with BG lambs on all days, and reduced in SLM compared with BG lambs on day 56. Initially, Haemonchus contortus was the predominant nematode, but the population shifted to other species in the SL groups by the end of the study. The mean number of dewormings/lamb was 0.71, 0.20, and 0.21±0.13 for BG, SLM, and SLP groups, respectively. In goats in Experiment 3, Trichostrongylus spp. was the predominant nematode in May and June and H. contortus in July. There was little meaningful effect of forage treatments on GIN infection in kids. Because H. contortus was not the predominant nematode in kids, the integrated approaches used may not have been effective in controlling GIN. Grazing SL was effective for GIN control in lambs in early summer, but the effect was delayed in lambs grazing a mixed SL/grass pasture unless lambs initially grazed with dams. An integrated approach used that included SL grazing and COWP for deworming was effective in lambs.  相似文献

Congenital toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in a flock of Hampshire sheep in South Dakota. The 80 ewes produced 144 lambs, 30 of which were born dead; toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in 11 of the dead lambs. The remaining 114 lambs grew normally, but 68 (40.3%) had agglutinating Toxoplasma gondii antibodies. Modified agglutination test T gondii antibody titers for 114 lambs were: less than 100 (n = 46), 64 (n = 2), 256 (n = 1), 1,024 (n = 12), and greater than or equal to 4,096 (n = 53). Tissues of 8 seropositive lambs were bioassayed for T gondii tissue cysts. Toxoplasma gondii was isolated from the tongue and lamb chops of 7, heart of 3, and legs of lamb of all 8 lambs.  相似文献

This study assessed the effects of suckled sucrose and parenteral carprofen treatment on behavioural measurements of discomfort and serum haptoglobin concentration in lambs following rubber ring castration and/or tail docking. Twenty-eight male and 20 ewe lambs were allocated to either a male or ewe lamb control group (n=4) or to one of three male and two ewe lamb treatment groups (n=8). Male lambs in one treatment group received carprofen subcutaneously (0.5 mg/kg) 30 minutes before castration and docking. Lambs in all other treatment groups suckled sucrose or colostrum immediately before castration and/or tail docking. Behavioural measurements of discomfort were made following castration or tail docking in treatment groups and also in control animals which were not castrated or tail docked. Blood sampling of animals in treatment groups for analysis of serum haptoglobin, an acute phase protein used as an indicator of an acute inflammatory response, was performed before castration or docking and at 24 and 48 hours after castration or docking. Control lambs were blood sampled at 0, 24 and 48 hours following behavioural assessment Neither suckled sucrose nor carprofen treatment altered discomfort behaviour associated with castration or tail docking. Haptoglobin levels following castration or tail docking remained close to the detection limits of the assay and were similar to those recorded in control animals.  相似文献

The effects of intravenous tetrathiomolybdate (TM) treatment on growth rate and onset of puberty in ewe-lambs were investigated in March-born Sulfolk X Mule Lambs. One group (n = 6, mean weight 13.5 +/- 0.9 kg) was treated with 25 mg tetrathiomolybdate intravenously twice weekly for 34 weeks; the second group (n = 6, mean weight 13.5 +/- 0.9 kg) served as controls. TM treatment significantly depressed liveweight gains in the treated group compared with the controls (97.8 +/- 2.5 g/day versus 114 +/- 4.8 g/day respectively, P less than 0.001). Puberty was attained at a significantly earlier age in the controls compared with the TM-treated lambs (245 +/- 4 days versus 268 +/- 7 days respectively, P less than 0.02). The weights at onset of puberty were similar for both groups. The LH responses of the lambs to exogenous oestradiol injections were not significantly affected by TM treatment although the LH peak heights were lower in the TM-treated groups than in the controls. Mean LH pulse frequency and amplitude were similar in both groups. Tetrathiomolybdate treatment affected copper metabolism by significantly depressing (P less than 0.005) the amount of plasma copper soluble in 10% trichloracetic acid. The results of this study show that intravenous tetrathiomolybdate reduces growth rate in ewe-lambs and delays the onset of puberty, although with little effect on the pattern of LH secretion.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine whether: a) using a controlled-release anthelmintic capsule (CRC) instead of a programme of 5 oral drenches administered at 3-4 week intervals, would delay the development of anti-parasite immunity in lambs; b) the use of ivermectin instead of albendazole, administered either as a CRC or as a programme of 5 oral drenches, would delay the development of anti-parasite immunity in lambs; c) lambs treated with CRCs would have higher liveweight gains than lambs drenched orally 5 times at 3-4 week intervals, and; d) delayed onset of anti-parasite immunity is associated with reduced liveweight gains in the period following anthelmintic treatment. METHODS: Three field trials were conducted, 1 on a research farm and 2 on commercial sheep farms, in which groups of 30 lambs were treated with either a CRC containing albendazole, a CRC containing ivermectin, 5 oral drenches with albendazole, or 5 oral drenches with ivermectin, administered at 3-4 week intervals. Liveweights and faecal nematode egg counts (FECs) were recorded in all trials. Immunoglobulin-G (IgG) antibody levels to Ostertagia circumcincta and Trichostrongylus colubriformis adult and larval antigens were measured in Trials 1 and 3, and fleece weights and resistance of animals to nematode challenge infection were measured in Trial 1. RESULTS: CRC-treated lambs had higher levels of antibodies to O. circumcincta infective-stage larvae (L3) than orally drenched lambs in Trial 3, but no other immunological differences due to mechanism of delivery were detected. Antibody levels were lower in lambs treated with ivermectin than albendazole, as a CRC or oral drench in Trial 1, but this was not associated with any measurable effects on FEC or productivity. No significant differences (p>0.05) were detected between drench types (albendazole vs ivermectin) or delivery mechanisms (CRC vs oral drenching) in any of the production parameters measured, in any of the trials. Albendazole-CRCs failed to control FECs in all 3 trials. CONCLUSIONS: Although some differences between treatments in antibody levels were detected these were not associated with measurable differences in level of parasitism or productivity of lambs. CRC use did not appear to offer substantial gains in productivity over a structured programme of 5 oral drenches administered at 3-4 week intervals.  相似文献

In order to prove the effect of 'fixed time insemination' and insemination at standing oestrus after post-weaning application of GnRH, in a Croatian large breeding unit, 502 sows were assigned to three groups and were artificially inseminated (AI) at their first post-weaning oestrus as many times as they stand, in 24-h intervals. The groups were treated as follows: group 1 (control, n = 160) were AI during their standing reflex; group 2 ['GnRH-fixed time insemination' (GnRH-FT-AI), n = 175] were AI, independent of detection of oestrus and following administration of GnRH-agonist at 96 h post-weaning; group 3 [GnRH insemination at standing oestrus (GnRH-OE-AI), n = 167] the animals were GnRH-agonist treated as group 2 and were AI at their standing reflex. Pre-trial daily average lactational feed intake, average daily feed intake from weaning to oestrus, oestrus within 6 days post-weaning (%), ovulation within 6 days post-weaning (%), weaning-to-oestrus interval (h), duration of oestrus (h), follicle size (mm), interval from oestrus to ovulation (h), subsequent day 24 pregnancy rate (%), farrowing rate (%) and total pigs born were evaluated. Pre-trial average daily lactational voluntary feed intake was 7.1 +/- 0.08 kg in group 1, 7.0 +/- 0.07 kg in group 2 and 7.1 +/- 0.17 kg in group 3 (p > 0.05). Average voluntary daily feed intake from weaning to oestrus was 5.1 +/- 0.3 kg in group 1, 5.2 +/- 0.5 kg in group 2 and 5.2 +/- 0.19 kg in group 3 (p > 0.05). Oestrus was detected within 6 days post-weaning in 134 (83.8%) in control, 164 (93.7%) in GnRH-FT-AI and 155 (92.8%) animals in GnRH-OE-AI groups (p = 0.05). Follicle size did not differ (p > 0.05) among the groups. In control 82.8%, in GnRH-FT-AI 91.5% and in GnRH-OE-AI 91.0% of the sows ovulated within 6 days post-weaning (p = 0.04), and had 80.6, 90.9 and 89.7% 24-day pregnancy rates (p = 0.16), respectively. In GnRH-FT-AI group 90.2%, in GnRH-OE-AI sows 89.7%, in control animals 79.9% farrowing rates were recorded (p = 0.17). Weaning to oestrus interval was 113.1 h in control, 114.1 h in GnRH-FT-AI and 112.6 h GnRH-OE-AI (p > 0.05). Duration of oestrus was significantly shorter in GnRH-FT-AI (44.9 h) and GnRH-OE-AI (48.1 h) animals, compared with the control (62.9 h) sows (p = 0.001). Similarly, the interval from oestrus to ovulation revealed significant (p = 0.004) differences between the groups (control 44.1 h, GnRH-OE-AI 34.1 h and GnRH-FT-AI 32.9 h). GnRH-FT-AI (12.5) and GnRH-OE-AI (12.6) sows had significantly higher (p = 0.01) number of total pigs born (n = 10.4) compared with control sows. GnRH-agonist-gel treatment to the sow shortens duration of oestrus, the interval from oestrus to ovulation, and may eliminate the need for oestrus detection in the hands of skilled personnel.  相似文献
