This is an initial paper in a series of overviews of biological research and aquaculture development of the mud crab, Scylla serrata, in China. Results of experimental ecological studies on mud crabs are reported here. As a result of these experimental studies, results that are important for mud crab culture were also discovered and these include, methods to condition and manage broodstock, determination of ecological conditions that are suitable for embryonic development, and the influence of temperature, salinity, diet and larval density on development and survival of larvae. Results of this work will be useful in establishing a good method for artificial mass culture of larvae.  相似文献

Predicting growth is critical in aquaculture, but models of growth are largely missing for mud crab species. Here, we present the first model of natural growth in juvenile and adult mud crabs Scylla serrata from East Africa using a stepwise growth function based on data on intermoult periods and growth at moult from field mark‐recapture, pond and laboratory studies. The results showed a sigmoid growth pattern in carapace width and suggest that S. serrata in East Africa will reach 300 g and sexual maturity ~9.9 months after settlement, and a commercial size of 500 g after 12.4 months. Analyses of the literature identified several issues with the common praxis to compare standard growth measures between aquaculture studies with different initial size or growing periods. Using the new growth function to estimate the proportional difference between modelled and obtained growth as an alternative method, we show that growth rates of S. serrata cultured in cage systems, which are dominant in East Africa, was <40% of the estimated natural growth and growth obtained in pond systems. The analysis also indicated that growth rates of S. serrata in Southeast Asia was over 50% higher compared with similar culture systems in East Africa, and that different species of mud crabs had large differences in growth rates. This study shows that growth in the present mud crab aquaculture systems in East Africa is below their expected potential. Further work is needed to identify the factors behind this observation.  相似文献

Mud crab, Scylla serrata (Forskal), is the most commercially important marine crab species in China. In recent years, serious diseases have occurred in major mud crab culture regions in SE China. PCR detection of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) in diseased mud crabs collected from Zhejiang Province during 2006–2008 showed a prevalence of 34.82%. To study the pathogenicity of WSSV to mud crab, healthy mud crabs were injected intramuscularly with serial 10‐fold dilutions of a WSSV inoculum. The cumulative mortalities in groups challenged with 10?1, 10?2, 10?3 and 10?4 dilutions were 100%, 100%, 66.7% and 38.9% at 10 days post‐injection, respectively. All moribund and dead mud crabs except the control group were positive for WSSV by PCR. Based on the viral load of the WSSV inoculum by quantitative real‐time PCR, the median lethal dose (LD50) of WSSV in S. serrata was calculated as 1.10 × 106 virus copies/crab, or 7.34 × 103 virus copies g?1 crab weight. The phenoloxidase, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities in haemolymph of WSSV‐infected moribund crabs, were significantly lower than the control group, whereas alkaline phosphatase, glutamate‐pyruvate transaminase and glutamic‐oxaloacetic transaminase were higher than in the control group. WSSV was mainly distributed in gills, subcuticular epithelia, heart, intestine and stomach as shown by immunohistochemical analysis with Mabs against WSSV. The epithelial cells of infected gill showed hypertrophied nuclei with basophilic inclusions. Numerous bacilliform virus particles were observed in nuclei of infected gill cells by transmission electron microscopy. It is concluded that WSSV is a major pathogen of mud crab with high pathogenicity.  相似文献

Natural food (NF, control), artificial diets (AD) containing total lipid levels of 10%, 12% and 14% (AD10, AD12 and AD14) and their combinations (AD10+NF, AD12+NF and AD14+NF) were fed for 112 days to pond‐sourced eyestalk‐ablated mud crab Scylla serrata (625±6.4 g) in tanks in order to determine their effects on reproduction and lipid profiles in broodstock tissues and zoeae. Crabs fed NF had the highest number of spawning followed by crabs fed AD10+NF and AD14+NF. Higher offspring production (number of zoeae) was obtained from crabs fed NF and AD+NF than from AD. As dietary total lipid levels increased, total lipid of broodstock ovaries, hepatopancreas, muscle and zoeae correspondingly increased in which AD+NF promoted higher levels than AD. Increased dietary total lipid levels enhanced lipid classes such as triacylglycerols and phosphatidyl choline levels in zoeae, all higher in crabs fed AD+NF than in AD. The major fatty acids in zoeae, particularly 16:0, 18:0, 18:1n‐9 and 20:4n‐6, 20:5n‐3 and 22:6n‐3, were higher in crabs fed AD+NF than in AD, the contents corresponding to broodstock dietary total lipid levels. A 10% total lipid in AD in combination with NF was sufficient to provide the essential lipids in crabs in the improvement of larval production and quality.  相似文献

Size at sexual maturity and body size composition of mud crabs Scylla spp. were examined as the basis for settling a minimum landing size as a fishing regulation in Don Sak, Bandon Bay, Gulf of Thailand, which has suffered serious mangrove habitat degradation. Mud crabs were caught using baited traps and gill nets. Hooked metal rods were also used to lever the crabs out of their burrows inside the mangroves. Two mud crab species, S. paramamosain and S. olivacea, occur in the bay; S. paramamosain is the dominant species, accounting for 87% of the samples. The size at which 50% of the S. paramamosain females reached maturity (SM50) was estimated as an external carapace width (ECW) of 112.0 mm based on the morphology of the abdomen. Allometric changes in the crushing chelae height to ECW ratio suggested that the SM50 of S. paramamosain males occurred at 106.4 mm ECW. The body size composition revealed that mainly immature mud crabs were exploited in Don Sak. To maintain a sustainable fishery for mud crabs, fishing regulations—including a minimum landing size based on the SM50 estimates—are essential, as is habitat restoration.  相似文献

The fishery biology of mud crabs Scylla spp. was examined using baited traps and gill nets from September 2001 to August 2005 at Iriomote Island, Japan. To elucidate the growth of the crabs, artificially produced S. serrata juveniles were released and recaptured at the study site. The sizes at which 50% of females and males of S. serrata reached sexual maturity (SM50) were estimated as an external carapace width (ECW) based on the morphology of the abdomen and the chela respectively. Two species, S. serrata and S. olivacea, were identified in the area with S. serrata being the dominant species (>95% of the catch). Changes in the mean ECW and the results of the release and recapture experiments suggested that the recruitment of young crabs to the fishery occurred from December/January to April/May. The SM50 of females and males occurred at 132.4 and 150.7 mm ECW respectively. The body size composition of S. serrata revealed that immature crabs comprised approximately 40 and 65% of the catch for females and males respectively. To maintain a sustainable fishery for S. serrata, a minimum landing size based on the SM50 estimates should be implemented as a fishing regulation.  相似文献

Abstract Mangrove crabs, Scylla serrata (Forskål), represent one of the main economic resources in the Ranong mangrove ecosystem on the Andaman Sea cost of southern Thailand. However, there is a serious problem of overfishing which has caused fishermen increasingly to sell undersized crabs to meet market demand and maintain their income levels. The crab population and fishing activities were studied to assess the scope for better management of the fishery, especially protection of female broodstock, and the feasibility of using young crabs for aquaculture. Berried crabs examined were always larger than 10·0cm (carapace width), with the great majority of females maturing in the size range 10·0–11·5cm. Gonosomatic index values peak in September, within a main egg carrying and spawning period from July to December. Protecting female crabs from fishing pressure during this season, plus limits on the harvesting of crabs less than 10cm, or using them for fattening in ponds, could lead to better utilization of this resource. Crab farming in Ranong is constrained by climatic factors, the presence of acid-sulphate soils and lack of technical knowledge among the local fishermen. An attempt initially to culture crabs from Ranong under more favourable conditions at Surat Thani showed limited success. Nonetheless, there is a considerable price differential between wild and pond-fattened crabs to encourage further interest in crab farming in Ranong.  相似文献

For the improvement of nursery culture of the mud crab Scylla paramamosain, a special nursery facility was purposely designed and built. This facility consists of nursery ponds (areas of 20, 50, and 120 m2, respectively) and a seed collecting pond connected to each nursery pond. There were 140 nursery facility units in operation for large-scale juvenile crab production. A series of experiments were carried out using the facility to investigate the effects of the age of megalopae, stocking density, and culture duration of both megalopae and first-stage crabs on the survival of megalopae and early juveniles of S. paramamosain. The results showed that when megalopae were stocked at a density between 3,000 and 5,000 ind m−2 and reared to reach the first-stage crabs, a survival rate of up to 50% could be achieved. When the first-stage juvenile crabs were stocked at a density between 2,000 and 3,000 ind m−2, their survival was more than 50% after 14 days of culture.  相似文献

The effect of increasing levels of dietary phospholipids (PL) on the ovarian development and reproductive performance of Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis were investigated using four semipurified formulated diets supplemented with 0%, 1.2%, 2.4%, and 3.6% PL. Four groups of 40 females, with an average individual body weight of 95–120 g, were fed the experimental diets for a period of 7 months. Male crabs were introduced into the female rearing system in March, and mating, spawning, and egg hatching occurred in the following month. After 10 weeks of feeding, females fed the diet with 2.4% PL had a significantly higher gonadosomatic index (GSI) than females fed the diet with 0% PL, whereas females fed the diet with 1.2% PL had a significantly higher hepatic moisture content and lower hepatic lipid content than the other groups (< 0.05). After mating, the spawning rate was higher among females fed diets with 3.6% and 2.4% PL (95% and 92%, respectively) compared with females fed diets with 0% and 1.2% PL (both 81%). The results showed that egg production (total number of eggs/female) and fecundity increased with increasing dietary PL level, with females fed diets with 0% and 1.2% PL supplementation having significantly lower values than females fed the diet with 3.6% PL (< 0.05). In conclusion, our results suggest that dietary PL supplementation has a positive effect on ovarian development and reproductive performance of E. sinensis broodstock. Further study should aim to investigate the optimal PL level in the broodstock diet of E. sinensis in respect to offspring quality.  相似文献

Mass mortality due to necrosis signs occurred in hatchery-reared zoea stage larvae of the mud crab Scylla serrata in Okinawa, Japan, and a causative bacterium was isolated. In this study, we identified and characterized the bacterium by genome analysis, biochemical properties and pathogenicity. The bacterium was a Gram-negative, non-motile, long rod, forming yellow colonies on a marine agar plate. It grew at 20–33°C (not at 37°C) and degraded chitin and gelatin. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence identified the bacterium as Aquimarina hainanensis. Genome sequence data obtained from Illumina MiSeq generated 29 contigs with 3.56 Mbp in total length and a G + C content of 32.5%. The predicted 16 chitinase genes, as putative virulence factors, had certain homologies with those of genus Aquimarina. Experimental infection with the bacterium conducted on larvae of four crustacean species, brine shrimp Artemia franciscana, freshwater shrimp Caridina multidentata, swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus and mud crab S. serrata, revealed that this bacterium was highly virulent to these species. The present study suggests that the bacterium caused mass mortality in mud crab seed production was A. hainanensis and can be widely pathogenic to crustaceans.  相似文献

Hatchery-reared animals for stock enhancement should be competent to survive and grow at rates equivalent to those of wild conspecifics. However, morphological differences are often observed, and pre-conditioning steps may be required to improve the fitness of hatchery-reared juveniles prior to release. In the present study, hatchery-reared Scylla serrata juveniles were reared either individually (HR-solitary) or groups in tanks (HR-communal), the latter group being exposed to intraspecific competition and foraging for food. After 21 days, both groups were compared to similar size wild-caught juveniles in terms of morphometric measurements of carapace spination, abnormalities and carapace colouration. There were some limited significant differences between HR-communal crabs and HR-solitary crabs in terms of length of 8th and 9th lateral spines and in body-weight-carapace width ratio, but both treatments differed from wild crabs, which were heavier and had longer carapace spines for their size. In contrast, both HR treatments exhibited common abnormalities including deformities in the shape of the abdomen, in particular occurrence of an asymmetrical telson or a deeply folded telson. In all cases, abnormalities persisted through moulting. Initially, carapace colour differed in all measures of colour between HR and wild crabs. However, these differences reduced after a period of 4–8 days of conditioning on coloured tank backgrounds or dark sand or mud backgrounds, without moulting. Similarly, hatchery-reared crabs exhibited very limited burying behaviour on first exposure to sediment, but this increased to levels observed in wild crabs within 2–4 days. Thus, short-term conditioning of hatchery-reared crabs on dark sediments may be effective in increasing predator avoidance and survivorship in released animals, and present results suggest that this can be achieved after relatively short periods of 1 week or less.  相似文献

A fattening demonstration was carried out in Sorlagondi (15.86400N, 80.96710E) mangrove ecosystem in Diviseema region, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh, India, by adapting a holistic approach of “Integrated Mangrove Fishery Farming System.” The local Yanadi tribal communities engaged in mangrove afforestation programmes were provided with 144 individual crab fattening cages (60 × 40 × 30 cm). Two formulated feeds were prepared with two levels of protein (32% and 36%) and were tested on fattening of the marketable size (200–1,000 g) of mud crabs, Scylla serrata. Significantly (p < 0.05) higher weight gain, feed and protein efficiency measures were observed in crabs fed with CP‐36% diet across all size groups. This diet also reduced the time (days) taken for fattening crabs irrespective of the size. Moisture content was very high in soft crabs (>800 g/kg) compared with hard crabs (679.70–688.65 g/kg), whereas the reverse trend was observed for protein, ether extract and ash content. Both diet and size of the crab have not shown much influence on proximate composition. However, cultured hard crabs had higher ether extract (20.10 g/kg) than wild hard crabs (17.06 g/kg). The changes in concentration of mineral values on wet basis indicated the increase in concentration in hard crabs compared with soft crabs, whereas when the percentage change, values on dry matter basis indicated the reduction in concentration of mineral contents of K, Na, P, Cu, Fe and Zn. This higher concentration of minerals in soft crabs could possibly be attributed to the reabsorption of minerals into soft muscle or to the body fluids.  相似文献

Soft‐shell crab, a newly moulted crab having non‐calcified and hydrated soft exoskeleton, farming has been increasing tremendously in recent years throughout the world due to its high market price and consumer preferences. However, high aggressiveness and cannibalistic behaviour of mud crab limit its culture to an individual chamber system which ultimately makes the soft‐shell mud crab farming space and labour‐intensive. Therefore, the aim of this study was to improve the efficiency of soft‐shell crab production by autotomy of the claw and/or walking legs to reduce the moulting duration and intensify the culture system through double stocking in the existing individual chamber culture system. To achieve our objectives, a series of experiment were conducted at both indoor and on‐farm levels by removing the claw and/or walking legs of Scylla olivacea for two consecutive moulting cycles. Results showed that both claw ablation significantly (p < .01) shortened the moulting duration and increased the carapace width, weight gain, specific growth rate, feeding efficiency and yield parameter compared to the non‐ablated crabs more prominently at 1st moulting than the 2nd moulting in both indoor and on‐farm trials. Ablation of all walking legs while keeping the claw intact did not significantly influence (p > .05) the moulting duration and carapace width, but significantly (p < .01) improved the specific growth rate, weight gain, feeding efficiency and yield parameters at 1st moulting compared to the non‐ablation and unilateral three walking leg ablation groups. However, ablation of all appendages (both claw and walking legs) showed significant (p < .01) improvements of carapace width, weight gain, specific growth rate, feeding efficiency and yield parameters, and shortened the moulting duration up to 23 days from 34 days during 1st moulting and up to 27 days from 40 days at 2nd moulting. The survivals of different autotomized mud crabs were statistically non‐significant (p > .05) to the non‐autotomized crabs in various indoor and on‐farm trials. Besides improving the production performances, ablation of bilateral claw and all appendages allowed to double the stocking density in the existing individual chamber‐based soft‐shell crab farming that enhanced the production about threefold higher than the existing individual chamber‐based culture system. Finally, our results suggest that autotomy could be a promising technology for the commercial farming of soft‐shell mud crab in near future.  相似文献

The present study aims to assess the anti‐nutritional effect of pectin and to better understand rapeseed meal (RSM) as a feed ingredient for Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis. A semipurified diet containing 280 g/kg fish meal was formulated as a control diet (DF). A second diet (DP) was supplemented with 26.7 g/kg pectin; the amount was estimated to be equal to that in the third diet (DR), which was formulated to include 400 g/kg RSM. Another diet (DRPase) was supplemented with 12 g/kg pectinase based on DR in which pectin was degraded by pectinase. The diets were randomly fed to twelve tanks of the crab for 8 weeks. Compared with the crabs fed DF, the specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio, apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) of dry matter and protein, activity of aspartate transaminase (AST) and trypsin (TP), and high‐density lipoprotein (HDL) in the serum decreased significantly in the crabs fed DR; the ADC of dry matter, activity of AST and serum HDL decreased significantly in the crabs fed Dp, but they were higher than in the crabs fed DR. Compared with the crabs fed DR, the ADC of dry matter, activity of AST and TP, and serum HDL increased significantly in the crabs fed DRPase. The mRNA expression activity of both Es‐pl44 and Es‐pp1 was DF < DP < DRPase < DR. These results indicate that pectin contributed to low utilization of RSM in Chinese mitten crab.  相似文献

The effects of temperature and autotomy of chelipeds on survival, growth and moulting of mangrove crab (Scylla serrata) juveniles were investigated under laboratory conditions for 60 days. Hatchery‐produced crabs with 2.0–2.3 cm internal carapace width (1.7–2.2 g body weight) at intermoult stage were exposed to one of four temperature treatments (constant 29, 32 or 35°C, or ambient [24–31°C]) or subjected to cheliped autotomy. All crabs held at 35°C had 100% mortality due to incomplete moulting during first moult. The mean survival of crabs at termination was 58%, 64% and 50% for ambient temperature, 29 and 32°C respectively. Specific growth rate (SGR) of crabs in the ambient and 29°C were comparable but significantly lower than those at 32°C. The moult interval of the crabs was significantly shorter in treatments with constant water temperature of 29 and 32°C compared with ambient temperature. The survival of crabs with intact chelipeds was comparable with those with one or two autotomized chelipeds. Crabs with intact or one autotomized chelipeds had significantly higher SGR than crabs with both chelipeds autotomized in the first moult. On the second moult, however, high SGR was observed in crabs with two chelipeds autotomized. The moult interval was significantly shorter in the autotomized crabs compared with crabs with intact chelipeds. The results suggest that the optimum water temperature for rearing Sserrata juveniles ranges from 29 to 32°C. Likewise, autotomy of chelipeds can promote moulting without adversely affecting survival of crabs.  相似文献

Culture of Ruditapes decussatus is clearly limited by the availability of seed, as this production proceeds almost exclusively from natural recruitment. Artificial spawning and larval rearing programs could provide an alternative source of spat. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of different conditioning temperatures on the broodstock maturation, spawning success and larval viability of two geographically (north and south of the Iberian Peninsula) distinct populations of European clam (R. decussatus) collected at different periods of the year in order to create “optimal” artificial spawning and larval rearing programs. Two batches of clams from each population were collected in October and February, and conditioned at 18 ± 1°C, 20 ± 1°C and 22 ± 1°C. Of the three variables analysed the timing of broodstock collection was the most determining factor for gametogenic development, spawning and larval rearing. Geographic origin and conditioning temperature also greatly affected the spawning. The results also showed that the February conditioning was more effective than October and that the best conditioning temperatures were 20 ± 1°C and 22 ± 1°C for the northern and southern populations, respectively. These results suggest that the efficient conditioning temperature for each population of the same species is related to the seasonal temperature regime from their geographic origin. Larval viability and growth performance seemed to be independent of the broodstock conditioning.  相似文献

Some aspects of the reproductive biology of Charybdis feriatus (Linnaeus) were investigated to identify suitable techniques for broodstock management and seed production. Likewise, factors such as ablation, water depth and light requirements affecting survival or reproductive performance were tested. Production of megalops in tanks and juveniles in net cages installed in earthen ponds was conducted. Wild‐caught berried females produced a significantly higher number of zoeae per gram body weight (BW) of the female (3300±600) than captive spawners (867±58). Ablated and unablated crabs spawned after a month and ovaries of both had oocytes in all developmental stages after spawning, indicating that ablation was not necessary. Broodstock survived higher when stocked in 1 m‐deep water and kept in dark conditions compared with shallow (0.5 m depth) water or ambient lighting. There were six zoea and one megalopa stage. Megalops were produced (survival of 2–22% in 1 tonne or 23–55% in 3 L tanks) when methods for the mud crab Scylla serrata (Forsskål) were used, but feeding with Artemia started only at the Z4 stage. Survival of megalops after 1 month was higher when stocked in net cages installed in an earthen pond (32–82%) than when reared continuously in land‐based tanks (5–11%).  相似文献

We reviewed the present status of seed production for stock enhancement and evaluated the impact of stocking on commercial catches in Japan, of portunid crabs particularly Portunus trituberculatus and Scylla paramamosain. The mean survival rate from hatching to first-stage crabs was around 10%, and 20–30% of the larval culture trials conducted in recent years could not harvest juveniles during seed production. To achieve reliable mass seed production technologies, measures for controlling disease and the nutritional condition of larvae in seed production tanks are required to be developed. The main spawning season extends from April/May to July. Reflecting their life cycle characteristics such as high growth rates, crabs recruit to the fishery after September and largely contribute to the commercial landings until December in the hatching year. The main release season of juveniles is from June to July. Consequently, released juveniles are expected to contribute to commercial landings in the release year. Analyses of catch and release statistics in two small bays estimated the yield from released individuals (YPR, yield per release) at 2.4 g for P. trituberculatus and 3.3–7.7 g for S. paramamosain, which were similar to values reported from tagging surveys. On a major regional basis, catch and release histories of P. trituberculatus highlighted the impact of hatchery releases on commercial landings as 33.6 g YPR in the Seto Inland Sea, where catches and releases have been greatest. Although the YPR estimates were different between small bays and major regional seas, Japanese stock enhancement programmes should have had an impact on portunid crab production, dependent on the magnitude of the releases.  相似文献

Laboratory predation trials were conducted to investigate maximum handling size, prey size and type selection by small (35–37 cm in total length, LT), medium (43–46 cm LT) and larger (58–60 cm LT) snakehead (Channa argus) when feeding on a wide size (9–34 mm in carapace width, CW) range of juvenile Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis). The maximum handling size of predator feeding on crabs monotonically increased with predator LT and mouth gape width, GW. Snakehead with at least 16.0 cm LT or 27.7 mm GW would be capability to consume the smallest size group of crabs, whereas the predator with 72.6 cm LT or 63.4 mm GW would be capability to consume all size groups of crabs in these trails. Prey‐size selection trials showed that snakehead has a high preference to the small‐sized crabs, and lower preference to the medium or large size crabs. The preference index was significantly affected by prey size and prey size × predator size interaction, however, was not affected by predator size. In prey type experiments, snakehead consumed lower proportions of juvenile crabs when fed on the crab and crucian carp than when fed on only the crab, which suggests alternative fish prey may reduce predation risk of the crab by snakehead in nature. These results could be useful for improving the fishery management and release strategies for the crab.  相似文献

Diversification of production systems has been identified as one of the major strategies for the long‐term sustainability of brackishwater aquaculture. On the context of diversification, a 180‐day culture experiment was carried out where four farming systems were tested: monoculture of mud crab, Scylla serrata (T1), polyculture of mud crab, with mullet Mugil cephalus and shrimp Penaeus indicus (T2), polyculture of mud crab with mullet, shrimp and oyster Crassostrea cuttackensis (T3), polyculture of mud crab with mullet, shrimp, oyster along with periphyton net (T4) covering 10% of the water spread area. There was no significant difference in the growth performances of mud crab, shrimp and oyster among the treatment but a significantly higher (p < .05) final average body weight (ABW) of M.cephalus was recorded in T4 (121.19 ± 2.09 g). Production considering only the fed animals (excluding oyster) was significantly (p < .05) higher in T4 (2,115 kg/ha) compared to other treatments. The overall water quality parameters do not vary significantly (p > .05) among the treatment ponds. Although there was no significant difference in total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) and nitrite‐N, highest value was recorded in T2 (56.23 ± 39.47 µg/L and 185.53 ± 110.71 µg/L) and T1 (55.78 ± 32.26 µg/L and 180.83 ± 103.65 µg/L). The results from the current experiment based on water quality and growth of animals showed that there is no negative interaction between the mud crab and other animals stocked in the polyculture pond which indicated that polyculture provides an efficient and sustainable utilization of resources.  相似文献
