Estimates of heritabilities and genetic correlations for calving ease over parities were obtained for the Italian Piedmontese population using animal models. Field data were calving records of 50,721 first- and 44,148 second-parity females and 142,869 records of 38,213 cows of second or later parity. Calving ability was scored in five categories and analyzed using either a univariate or a bivariate linear model, treating performance over parities as different traits. The bivariate model was used to investigate the genetic relationship between first- and second- or between first- and third-parity calving ability. All models included direct and maternal genetic effects, which were assumed to be mutually correlated. (Co)variance components were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood procedures. In the univariate analyses, the heritability for direct effects was .19 +/- .01, .10 +/- .01, and .08 +/- .004 for first, second, and second and later parities, respectively. The heritability for maternal effects was .09 +/- .01, .11 +/- .01, and .05 +/- .01, respectively. All genetic correlations between direct and maternal effects were negative, ranging from -.55 to -.43. Approximated standard errors of genetic correlations between direct and maternal effects ranged from .041 to .062. For multiparous cows, the fraction of total variance due to the permanent environment was greater than the maternal heritability. With bivariate models, direct heritability for first parity was smaller than the corresponding univariate estimate, ranging from .18 to .14. Maternal heritabilities were slightly higher than the corresponding univariate estimates. Genetic correlation between first and second parity was .998 +/- .00 for direct effects and .913 +/- .01 for maternal effects. When the bivariate model analyzed first- and third-parity calving ability, genetic correlation was .907 +/- .02 for direct effects and .979 +/- .01 for maternal effects. Residual correlations were low in all bivariate analyses, ranging from .13 for analysis of first and second parity to .07 for analysis of first and third parity. In conclusion, estimates of genetic correlations for calving ease in different parities obtained in this study were very high, but variance components and heritabilities were clearly heterogeneous over parities.  相似文献

The epidemiology and genetic variability of clinical mastitis were examined. The data consisted of 70,775 Finnish Ayrshire cows. All cows were from milk recorded herds and calved during 1983. Each cow was under observation from the date of calving for 305 days. Only clinical mastitis diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian during the farm visits were taken into account. The lactation incidence rate of clinical mastitis (LIR) was 5.4 %. The cows calving in April-May had the highest LIR, but the seasonal variation was relatively small. The LIR increased with parity from the first to sixth parity. The cows treated for parturient paresis, infertility or ketosis had a higher risk of clinical mastitis than cows not treated for these diseases. The LIR was higher in herds with a high milk production level. The highest odds ratio estimated from parameters of the logit model was 14.8. The heritability estimates for clinical mastitis on the binomial scale were 3.2 % in parity 1, 1.6 % in parity 2, 0.6 % in parity 3 and 4, and 0.8 % in all parities (corresponding to 19.7 %, 8.3 %, 2.6 % and 3.8 % on the normal scale). These estimates indicate sufficient assurance for progeny testing of bulls and some possibilities of genetic selection against clinical mastitis. Genetic correlations between clinical mastitis and 305-days milk yield were 0.39 in parity 1, 0.51 in parity 2, 0.18 in parity 3–4 and 0.58 in all parities. This means that the best sires for milk yield had daughters with a higher LIR for clinical mastitis than the other sires.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and breeding values for the twinning rate of the first three parities (T1, T2 and T3) and 305‐day milk yield in first lactation (MY), using a four‐trait threshold‐linear animal model in Japanese Holsteins. Data contained 1 323 946 cows calving between 1990 and 2007. Twinning was treated as a binary character: ‘single’ or ‘twin or more’. Reported T1, T2 and T3 were 0.70%, 2.87%, and 3.73%, respectively. Individual 305‐day milk yield was computed using a multiple trait prediction for cows with at least eight test‐day records. (Co)variance components were estimated via Gibbs sampling for randomly sampled subsets. Posterior means of heritabilities for T1, T2 and T3 were 0.11, 0.16 and 0.14, respectively. Genetic correlations between parities were 0.92 or greater. Genetic correlations of MY with twinning rate were not ‘significant’ (i.e. their 95% highest probability density intervals contained zeros). Multiple births at different parities were considered as the same genetic trait. The average evaluations of T1 (T2) for sires born before 1991 was 0.48% (2.25%) compared with a mean of 0.76% (3.37%) for sires born after 1992. A recent increase in the reported twinning rate reflects the positive genetic trend for sires in Japanese Holsteins.  相似文献

Records on approximately one million calvings were examined for presence of a gene with major effect on the frequency of multiple births. The records were summarized by parity of the cow and registration number of the cow's sire, and an overall age-corrected frequency of multiple births computed for daughters of each sire.The distribution of 876 progeny groups with more than 100 calvings showed no sign of discontinuity, and the same was true for 120 progeny groups with more than 1000 calvings. The daughters of one particular bull had 9.95% multiple births in about 6000 calvings. This bull left more than 80 sons which were used for artificial insemination. The sons ranged from less than one to more than 10% multiple births among their daughters, but no segregation was observed.Heritability estimates (on the binomial scale) ranged from 0.006 in parity 1 to about 0.04 in parities 3–5.Genetic correlations between incidence of multiple births in first and subsequent parities were estimated at 0.52–0.64, while those among parities 2–5 were from 0.70 to 0.84.  相似文献

Calving records from the Animal Breeding Center of Iran collected from January 1987 to December 2007 and comprising 292,875 calving events of Holsteins from 1,413 dairy herds were analyzed using univariate and bivariate linear animal models to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations for calving intervals in the first three lactations of Holstein cows. Genetic trends were obtained by regressing yearly mean estimates of breeding values on calving year. Average calving intervals were from 406 to 414 days and decreased over the parities. Heritability estimates for calving intervals varied from 0.03 to 0.04 across the parities. Also, estimates of genetic correlations between calving intervals in different parities were high and ranged from 0.67 to 0.89. The average annual phenotypic trends obtained from fitting linear regression of annual mean calving intervals at parity 1 and 2 were significant (P < 0.01), but the phenotypic trend of calving interval at parity 3 was not significant over the years. On the other hand, there was an increasing genetic trend for calving interval at parity 1, and there were decreasing genetic trends for calving intervals at parity 2 and 3 over the years (P < 0.01). The low estimates of heritability obtained in this study imply that much of the improvement in calving interval traits could be attained by improvement of production environment rather than genetic selection.  相似文献

Repeated records of number of services per conception (NSC) were collected on 607 Japanese Black cows. Data were analysed by random regression (RRM) and multiple trait (MTM) models, considering NSC in each parity as a separate trait. The chosen RRM included additive genetic and permanent environmental effects fitted with a third‐order Legendre polynomials of parity. Heritabilities (h2) estimated by RRM decreased along the NSC trajectory from 0.15 in the first parity to 0.04 in the sixth parity and then increased up to 0.22 in the 10th parity. The corresponding estimates obtained by MTM ranged between 0.04 in parity 9 and 0.13 in parity 1. Permanent environmental proportions (p2) of the total phenotypic variance estimated by RRM showed similar pattern and magnitude to those of h2 estimated by the same method. On the contrary, the p2 estimated by MTM ranged between 0.04 in the first parity and 0.11 in the 10th parity. Additive genetic (rG), permanent environmental (rP) and phenotypic (rPH) correlations were also estimated. The values estimated by RRM between adjacent parities were higher than those of parities far apart. The corresponding values estimated by MTM were lower than those estimated by RRM with no certain trend. The results indicated that NSC in heifers is more heritable than NSC in cows with different parities. Reproductive traits are economically important traits and hence, they should be considered in breeding goals.  相似文献

To analyze how infection with Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) affects the shape of lactation curves, a three-level hierarchical test-day model was set up with fat-corrected test-day milk yield (FCTM) as response. Milk samples from 6955 cows in 108 Danish dairy herds were tested with ELISA to detect antibodies against MAP. Optical densities (ODs) recorded on a continuous scale were standardized according to parity and stage of lactation. In addition to standardized ODs (stOD), seven fixed covariates, quadratic terms and first-order interactions were included in the model. Cow and cow nested in herd were included as random effects. Cows of first, second and higher parities were analyzed separately. The lactation curves after peak yield were significantly less persistent in young infected cows, where an increase of one stOD unit was associated with a depression of the milk yield per day through day 305 of 3.7 kg FCTM in first parity and 2.7 kg FCTM in second parity. In second-parity cows, the lactation curve also was both depressed through the entire lactation and more steep after 60 days in milk (DIM). In third and older parities, a significant effect of the quadratic term of stOD indicated exponentially increased losses with increased ODs.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate direct and maternal genetic parameters for age at sale (AS, d), BW (kg), price (PR, €/kg), and market value (MV, €/calf) of Brown Swiss male calves (Bos taurus) from first- (n = 6,719) and second- (n = 4,405) parity dams marketed at livestock auctions from 2003 to 2007, and destined for veal production. Market value was calculated as the product of PR and BW. Restricted maximum likelihood procedures incorporating multiple trait animal models were used to infer genetic parameters for AS, BW, and PR, whereas estimates for MV were from single trait models. Bivariate analyses treating performance of calves from first- and second-parity cows as different traits were also performed. Direct heritabilities for AS, BW, and cattle prices ranged from 0.046 to 0.090, 0.078 to 0.130, and 0.064 to 0.152, respectively, and the corresponding maternal heritabilities varied from 0.020 to 0.030, 0.036 to 0.079, and 0.020 to 0.045, respectively. Direct genetic correlations between the traits were generally moderate to high and negative, whereas direct-maternal relationships were moderate to low. Genetic correlation between the same trait recorded on calves from first- and second-parity dams was less than unity, but generally high and positive, suggesting that AS, BW, PR, and MV can be treated as the same traits across parities. As calf price is routinely collected at auctions and shows genetic variation, it can be genetically improved.  相似文献

The first breeding value for udder health of a bull is based on the performance of his daughters in their first lactation. However, clinical mastitis (CM) is not a problem in first lactation only. Therefore, the objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for CM and somatic cell count (SCC) for the first three lactations of Dutch Holstein cattle. Data from 250 Dutch herds recording CM were used to quantify the genetic variation of CM in parity 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The dataset contained 35,379 lactations from 21,064 animals of different parities. Test-day SCC was available from all lactations. Somatic cell counts were log-transformed to somatic cell scores (SCS) and averaged over test-day records between 5 and 335, 5 and 150, and 151 and 335 days in milk. Variance components for CM and SCS were estimated using a sire-maternal grandsire model. The heritability for CM was approximately 3% in all parities. Genetic correlations between CM in consecutive lactations were high (0.9), but somewhat lower between parity 1 and 3 (0.6). All genetic correlations between CM and SCS were positive, implying that genetic selection on lower SCC will reduce CM-incidence. Estimated genetic correlations were stronger for SCS in the first half of lactation than in the second half of lactation. Selection indices showed that most progress could be achieved when treating CM in parity 1, 2, and 3 as different traits and by including SCS between 5 and 150 days in the udder health index.  相似文献

Foundation cows were selected using prior records from one of two sources, private herds or other projects at the Research Center. Comparing twinning rates before and after selection, the repeatability was lower for those from the first (.08) than for those from the second (.16) source with a combined value of .12. Realized heritability of single-parity twinning rate estimated from selection of parents and response in daughters of foundation females was .06. Paternal half-sib estimate of heritability of twinning rate was .02 +/- .07. Estimates of repeatability computed from calving records of females born in the project indicate that permanent environmental effects on twinning rate in cattle are small. Mean calving rate of females born in the project was 1.11 in the data set that included all data and 1.09 in the data set that excluded females from highly selected parents. Twinning rate was greater (P less than .05) in fall than in spring calving (1.13 vs 1.06). Data on twinning rate of a sample of the Swedish Friesian breed were summarized. Mean twinning rate of the Swedish Friesian breed is 2.57%. Age adjusted mean twinning rate of daughters of 32 half-sib sons of one particular Swedish Frieisan sire averaged 5.4% and ranged from .9% to 13.6%. There was no indication of a bimodal distribution, which would be expected if a single gene with a major effect on twinning rate were segregating. The estimated genetic standard deviation (sigma-xn) for mean twinning rates of the 32 sire progeny groups was 1.8%. Observed range among son progenies was .127 or 7.2 sigma-xn, in reasonable agreement with the hypothesis that twinning rate in this population is inherited as a quantitative trait.  相似文献

The first three lactation curves of the Japanese Holstein cows were analyzed using a random regression (RR) test-day model with a cubic Legendre polynomial fitted to each of the three parities. The first three eigenvectors of the additive genetic RR covariance matrix explained 77.8, 10.9, and 4.2% of the total variance of the three parities and are associated mainly with the level of milk yield, the linear increase, and the concave curve, respectively. On a lactational basis, as the parity increases, the contribution of the first eigenvector to a lactational variation decreases whereas the contribution of the second eigenvector increases sharply. This means that the impact of the first eigenvector on the level of milk production decreases across parity whereas the effect of the second eigenvector on the shape of the lactation curve increases across parity. The first lactation curve was the most persistent, followed by the second and the third lactation. Persistency and days to reach peak yield decrease as the parity increases (45, 40, and 36 days for the first three parities). Daily heritabilities within lactation were lower for the first parity than for the second or the third parity. The first three lactation curves possess distinctive genetic characteristics that merit consideration when combining the proofs of the first three lactations to select for lifetime production. Within- and between-parity genetic correlations between the constant and the linear RR coefficients were all positive, suggesting that raising the level of milk production in one parity would increase the linear slope in all parities, thus improving persistency. Within- and between-parity genetic correlations between the constant and the quadratic RR coefficients were all negative, implying that increasing the level of production in one parity would deepen and/or widen the concave curve in all parities, thus decreasing persistency. The linear and quadratic RR coefficients were negatively correlated within or between parities and thus have antagonistic effects on persistency.  相似文献

A genetic correlation near unity between ovulation rate in heifers and later twinning frequency led to consideration of using measures of ovulation rate in heifers for each estrous cycle, beginning at puberty, to increase accuracy of selection for twinning rate. An initial evaluation with a multiple trait animal model for predicting breeding values included six genetic groups: 1) selected Scandinavian bulls, 2) transfers from other populations at the Research Center to a twinning project, 3) early-purchased Holsteins, 4) late-purchased Holsteins, 5) early purchases-other breeds, and 6) late purchases-other breeds. For ovulation and twin measures, heritabilities of .100 and .070 and repeatabilities of .120 and .092 were assumed. Assumed phenotypic correlation between ovulation and twin measures of .08 was accounted for by genetic correlation of .89 and permanent environmental correlation of .19. The number of animals evaluated was 1,745; 6,912 estrous cycles were measured for ovulation rate on 840 heifers and 1,929 parturitions were observed for occurrence of twinning on 851 cows, of which 346 had ovulation rate measured as heifers. The remaining 400 animals were foundation animals that created relationships among those with records or were sires of animals with records. The Scandinavian genetic group effect was substantially greater than that of the others. Joint evaluations were compared to evaluations using only twinning measures. This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between milk score (MS) and litter weight at 70 d (LW) for four sheep breeds in the United States. Milk score is a subjective measure of milk production used to assess milk production of range ewes when milk yield cannot be quantitatively determined. Variance components for MS and LW were estimated for each of Targhee, Columbia, Rambouillet, and Polypay breeds. Data collected from 1990 through 2000 at the U.S. Sheep Exp. Stn. in Dubois, ID, were analyzed with an animal model using REML. There were 13,900 records of MS and LW for 5,807 ewes. Records were grouped according to parity as first, second, and greater (mature), and all records (lifetime). Estimates of heritability for MS were in the range of 0.05 to 0.18 for first, 0.01 to 0.27 for second, 0.05 to 0.10 for mature, and 0.08 to 0.13 for all lifetime parity groups. Estimates of genetic correlation between MS at first and second parities ranged from 0.74 to 1.00. Similarly, mature MS was highly correlated genetically with MS at first (0.83 to 1.00) and at second (0.60 to 1.00) parities, suggesting that additive genetic value for milking ability at maturity could be evaluated as early as at first parity. Heritability estimates for LW ranged from 0.00 to 0.18 over all breeds and parity groupings. The genetic correlation between LW at first and second parity groups ranged from 0.43 to 1.00. Estimates of genetic correlation between LW at first or second parity with mature LW were mostly high and positive, except for Targhee (-0.10) and Polypay (0.14) at first parity. Litter weight for mature ewes could be improved by selection at first or second parity. Estimates of genetic correlation at first parity between MS and LW were high (1.00) for Rambouillet and Polypay, and near zero for Columbia and Targhee. At second parity, estimates of genetic correlation between MS and LW were positive and moderate for Rambouillet and Polypay but more variable for Columbia and Targhee. Estimates of genetic correlation between MS and LW were mostly positive and may be favorable with smaller estimates of standard errors using all lifetime records rather than first or second parity records. Although estimates are variable, the average of the estimates of the genetic correlation suggests that LW can be improved by selecting ewes for favorable MS.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters of milk, fat, and protein yields, fat and protein contents, somatic cell count, and 17 groups and individual milk fatty acid (FA) contents predicted by mid‐infrared spectrometry for first‐, second‐ and third‐parity Holstein cows. Edited data included records collected in the Walloon region of Belgium from 37 768 cows in parity 1, 22 566 cows in parity 2 and 8221 in parity 3. A total of 69 (23 traits for three parities) single‐trait random regression animal test‐day models were run. Approximate genetic correlations among traits were inferred from pairwise regressions among estimated breeding values of cow having observations. Heritability and genetic correlation estimates from this study reflected the origins of FA: de novo synthetized or originating from the diet and the body fat mobilization. Averaged daily heritabilities of FA contents in milk ranged between 0.18 and 0.47. Average daily genetic correlations (averaged across days in milk and parities) among groups and individual FA contents in milk ranged between 0.31 and 0.99. The genetic variability of FAs in combination with the moderate to high heritabilities indicated that FA contents in milk could be changed by genetic selection; however, desirable direction of change in these traits remains unclear and should be defined with respect to all issues of importance related to milk FA.  相似文献

[目的]研究产犊季节、胎次及不同牛场对奶牛泌乳性能的影响情况,以期为提高奶牛的泌乳性能及牛奶质量提供可靠的理论依据。[方法]收集3个千头以上奶牛场共8 872次相关信息,用多因素方差分析法分析产犊季节、胎次和牛场对泌乳天数、305d校正奶量、305d脂肪产量、305d蛋白产量和全泌乳期产奶量5个泌乳性能的影响进行分析。[结果]不同产犊季节、胎次和牛场都极显著影响奶牛的5项泌乳性能(P<0.01)。夏季和秋季产犊奶牛的泌乳性能较为理想。夏季产犊奶牛的泌乳天数和全泌乳期产奶量最高,其他三个泌乳性能都位居第二;秋季产犊奶牛的305d校正奶量、脂肪产量和蛋白产量都显著高于其他三个季节(P<0.05),泌乳天数和全泌乳期产奶量也仅次于夏季。头胎牛的各项泌乳性能都显著高于其他胎次的奶牛(P<0.05),其次为2胎产犊奶牛。随着胎次的增加,泌乳性能的各项指标都有不同程度的降低。除了泌乳天数之外,A牛场的各项泌乳性能都最佳,且显著高于B、C两个奶牛场(P<0.05)。[结论]在饲养条件良好的情况下,本研究中三个牛场的奶牛适宜在夏、秋两个季节产犊,此时泌乳性能较好;此外,头胎产犊奶牛的泌乳性能在各胎次中最高。  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of parity, age at calving, percentage North American Holstein-Friesian and calving date on subsequent calving interval and survival to facilitate the estimation of transition probabilities for month of calving. The economic value of traits that influence calving date, age distribution and survival can be assessed in models using a transition probability matrix. Such a matrix contains the probabilities that a cow of a particular age or breed calving in a particular month will calve in the same, an earlier or later month next year, or be culled. Following editing 1,046,855 calving records in spring-calving herds between the years 1990 and 2004 were analysed. Shorter calving intervals were associated with cows calving later in the calendar year. Age at first calving of < 24 months resulted in longer calving intervals to second calving across all levels of Holstein percentage with cows calving for the first time at 25–26 months of age having the shortest subsequent calving interval. Age at second calving of 37–38 months and third calving of 49–50 months were optimum for shorter subsequent calving intervals. Calving interval increased with Holstein percentage across the first 5 parities. Survival rate decreased with later month of calving and with older parities. When survival rate was measured as the ability of the cow to re-calve within 500 days, the highest survival rate was found in cows calving at 25–26 months of age whereas there was a noticeable reduction in survival across all parities in the 88–100% Holstein percent category.  相似文献

Purebred Holstein-Friesian cows are the main exotic breed used for milk production on large, medium, and small farms in Kenya. A study was undertaken on seven large-scale farms to investigate the genetic trends for milk production and fertility traits between 1986 and 1997 and the genetic relationships between the traits. This involved 3,185 records from 1,614 cows, the daughters of 253 sires. There was a positive trend in breeding value for 305-d milk yield of 12.9 kg/ yr and a drop in calving interval of 0.9 d/yr over the 11-yr period. Bulls from the United States (U.S.) had an average total milk yield breeding value 230 kg higher than the mean of all bulls used; Canada (+121 kg), Holland (+15 kg), the United Kingdom (U.K., 0 kg), and Kenya (-71 kg) were the other major suppliers of bulls. Average breeding values of bulls for calving interval by country of origin were -1.31 (Canada), -1.27 (Holland), -0.83 (U.S.), -0.63 (Kenya), and 0.68 d (U.K.). The genetic parameters for 305-d milk yield were 0.29 (heritability), 0.05 (permanent environment effect as proportion of phenotypic variance) resulting in an estimated repeatability of 0.34. Using complete lactation data rather than 305-d milk yield resulted in similar estimates of the genetic parameters. However, when lactation length was used as a covariate heritability was reduced to 0.25 and the permanent environment effect proportion increased to 0.09. There was little genetic control of either lactation length (heritability, 0.09) or calving interval (heritability, 0.05); however, there were strong genetic correlations between first lactation milk yield, calving interval, and age at first calving.  相似文献

The genetic trend for clinical mastitis was estimated for Norwegian Cattle, a population in which mastitis resistance has been included in the breeding programme since 1978. More than 1.2 million first-lactation daughters, with clinical mastitis records registered from 1978 to 1995, bred by 2043 sires, were analysed with a linear sire model. For bulls born from 1974 to 1990 a flat genetic trend for clinical mastitis was found. However, bull sires born from 1983 onwards, selected on a breeding goal with increased weight on mastitis relative to milk production, showed consistently larger and favourable selection differentials for mastitis relative to bull sires born earlier, which had an average selection differential of approximately zero. This will influence genetic trend in the population through their sons, which were born from 1990 onwards.  相似文献
