One hundred and seventeen Israeli-Friesian cows from herds with a milk fever incidence of more than 15 per cent were injected intramuscularly with either 350 micrograms 1 alpha hydroxyvitamin D3 (1 alpha OHD3) in propylene glycol or with the vehicle alone, close to calving. If parturition had not occurred within 72 hours a second injection was administered; parturition was induced two days after the second injection if necessary. There were 10 cases of milk fever among 57 control cows as opposed to two cases among the 60 animals treated with 1 alpha OHD3. In an attempt to prolong the effect of the drug, Israeli-Friesian cows were injected intramuscularly with 350 micrograms 1 alpha OHD3 in either 10 ml propylene glycol or arachis oil. 1 alpha OHD3 in arachis oil did not prolong the effect of the drug. 1 alpha OHD3 in propylene glycol increased plasma calcium concentrations more rapidly than when the drug was administered in oil. Additional cows of the same breed and age were injected intramuscularly with 350 micrograms 1 alpha OHD3 in propylene glycol. Five of the animals received a second dose four days, and five received a second dose five days after the first injection. Five animals served as uninjected controls. The plasma calcium levels of the injected cows were significantly higher (P less than 0.01) than those of the controls from the second until the 14th day after the first injection. Based on these results 451 Israeli-Friesian cows from herds with a milk fever incidence of more than 15 per cent were injected intramuscularly with 1 alpha OHD3 close to calving.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The goal of the present study was to evaluate a calcium dose that was higher than the conventional dose for treatment of parturient paresis in cows. Thirty cows with parturient paresis received 1000 ml of 40 per cent calcium borogluconate solution supplemented with 6 per cent magnesium hypophosphite. Cows in group A received 200 ml of the solution intravenously over a 10-minute period, and the remaining 800 ml via a slow intravenous drip over a six-hour period. Cows in group B received 500 ml of the solution intravenously over a 20-minute period, and the remaining 500 ml via a slow intravenous drip over a six-hour period. Afterwards, the cows were monitored continuously and examined every hour for eight hours. Samples of blood were collected from all the cows before treatment and at 10, 20, 40, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240, 300, 360, 420 and 480 minutes and 24, 48 and 72 hours after treatment. The concentrations of total calcium, ionised calcium, inorganic phosphorus and magnesium were determined. Cows that did not stand within 12 hours of treatment received one or more additional treatments. There was no significant difference in the recovery rate between the two groups. Of the 30 cows, 14 (47 per cent) rised after one treatment and 15 others (50 per cent) were cured after two or more treatments. One cow did not respond to repeated treatments and was euthanased four days after the start of treatment. The results of electrolyte analyses before treatment did not differ significantly between the two groups. In 27 (90 per cent) cows, the concentrations of calcium and inorganic phosphorus were lower than normal and in 3 (10 per cent) cows, only the concentration of inorganic phosphorus was lower than normal. The concentration of total calcium increased markedly ten minutes after the start of treatment in both groups, and at eight hours, the mean concentration of calcium was within the normal range. At 24 and 48 hours, the mean concentration of calcium was below normal, but at 72 hours it was again within the normal range. The concentration of inorganic phosphorus increased slowly in both groups, although it was not within the normal range at eight hours. In both groups, it achieved normal values at 24, 48 and 72 hours. The mean electrolyte concentrations did not differ significantly at any measuring point between cows that stood within eight hours of treatment and those that did not. Our results indicate that increasing the dose of calcium administered does not improve the recovery rate of cows with parturient paresis.  相似文献

Three management programmes to improve the reproductive performance of a dairy herd were compared in a prospective controlled field study on one commercial farm. A total of 542 cows were examined for endometritis 22 to 28 days postpartum and assigned to one of three treatment groups: in group 1 the cows with signs of endometritis were treated with an intrauterine infusion of 100 ml of a 2 per cent polycondensated m-cresolsulphuric acid formaldehyde solution; in group 2 the cows with signs of endometritis were treated with an intrauterine infusion of 125 ml of a 20 per cent eucalyptus compositum solution; and in group 3 all the cows were injected intramuscularly with 0.75 mg of tiaprost, an analogue of prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) at two-week intervals, starting on day 43, until they were inseminated. Thirty-four per cent of the cows showed signs of endometritis. In group 3, oestrus detection efficiency was significantly higher than in groups 1 and 2 (P<0.05), the interval to first service was shorter, and the cows had fewer days open than the cows in groups 1 and 2 (P<0.05). The results indicate that management programmes based on the strategic use of PGF2alpha are an effective alternative to traditional programmes based on rectal palpations and intrauterine infusions to control endometritis at a herd level.  相似文献

A group of 97 spring-calving beef cows were initially oestrus synchronised with controlled internal drug release (CIDR) intravaginal progesterone implants inserted for nine days and a prostaglandin injection on day 7. Approximately half the cows were given 10 microg buserelin when the implants were inserted, and they all received a single fixed-time artificial insemination (AI) 56 hours after the withdrawal of the implants. The overall pregnancy rate to the first synchronised AI was 55 per cent, the buserelin-treated cows having a pregnancy rate of 63 per cent compared with 47 per cent in the untreated cows (P>0.05). Sixteen days after the first synchronised AI all the cows were re-implanted with used CIDR implants which were removed five days later, and the cows received a second synchronised AI on days 23 to 24. Cows which received the second AI were implanted with new CIDR devices 16 days later and these were removed after five days and the non-pregnant cows received a third synchronised AI. The pregnancy rates to the second and third synchronised services were 74 per cent and 75 per cent, respectively.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to assess the accuracy of different common methods of differentiating between follicular and luteal ovarian cysts, and to monitor the response of the cysts to 12 days treatment with a progesterone-releasing intravaginal device (PRID). On the basis of agreement between the different methods, 25 of the 46 cases examined were diagnosed as follicular and 14 as luteal cysts; for the other seven cases the methods disagreed. The use of ultrasound was more accurate in diagnosing follicular cysts than luteal cysts, and combined with plasma progesterone concentrations gave the most accurate assessment of cyst type (92 per cent for follicular cysts and 82 per cent for luteal cysts). The mean (se) plasma progesterone concentration was lower in the cows with follicular cysts than in those with luteal cysts (0.29 [0.05] v 3.90 [0.63] ng/ml; P<0.05). Luteal cysts had thicker walls (5.3 [0.04] v 2.5 [0.2] mm; P<0.0001), and the wall thickness of all the cysts was positively correlated with plasma progesterone concentration (r=0.52, P<0.0004). Cows with luteal cysts had more additional follicles greater than 5 mm in diameter (P<0.01). In cows with follicular cysts and other follicles greater than 5 mm in diameter, the mean oestradiol concentration was 7.9 (1.8) pg/ml compared with 24.2 (3.1) pg/ml (P=0.002) in cows without other follicles greater than 5 mm in diameter on either ovary. At the time of PRID removal, plasma progesterone concentration had increased in the cows with follicular cysts to 1.59 (0.06) ng/ml (P<0.05) and decreased in the cows with luteal cysts to 0.87 (0.01) ng/ml (P<0.05), although there was no change in original cyst structure in 45 per cent of the cases. However, new ovarian structures were frequently observed during the treatment. The overall pregnancy rate for cows with both types of cyst after treatment was 50 per cent after three inseminations, but the first service pregnancy rate was only 18 per cent for cows with follicular cysts and 28 per cent for cows with luteal cysts. After treatment, the fertility of cows with follicular cysts was similar to that of paired herdmates, whereas cows with luteal cysts took 40 days longer to calve again than healthy herdmates. However, the culling rate was higher for cows with follicular cysts (41 v 11 per cent).  相似文献

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different exogenous progesterone sources administrated after artificial insemination (AI) on serum progesterone (P(4) ) concentration and pregnancy rates in Holstein lactating cows. Sixty-four lactating Holstein dairy cows were allocated to four different treatments (n = 16 per treatment): the cows 1) were injected with physiological saline on days 5 and 13 after AI (control group); 2) were injected with progesterone on days 5 and 13 after AI (P group); 3) received controlled internal drug releasing device (CIDR) for a period from day 5 to 19 after AI (CIDR group); and 4) were injected with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist on days 5 and 13 after AI (GnRH group). Blood samples were collected on days 0 (AI day), 5, 13, 16 and 19 after AI to determine serum P(4) concentration. The results revealed a significant difference among treatment groups for serum P(4) concentration on days 13, 16 and 19 with the lowest concentration of serum P(4) for the control group. The pregnancy rate was also positively affected by all the treatments with CIDR having the greatest effect on pregnancy rate. Overall, the results indicated that CIDR has the greatest effect on serum P(4) concentration and pregnancy rate, although the administration of P and GnRH during days after AI increased serum P(4) concentration in lactating dairy cows as well.  相似文献

Associations between types of lameness and fertility   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Four hundred and twenty-seven cases of first-reported foot lameness were recorded in 17 dairy herds in Somerset during the winter housing period. Lameness was classified into three categories: sole ulceration, digital disease (white line abscess, foreign bodies in the sole and pricked or punctured sole), and interdigital disease (lesions of the skin between claws and heel including foul in the foot, interdigital fibroma and dermatitis). In addition, a 'clinical effect score' was calculated to take account of the severity of lameness, the structures involved and the time for which the cows were clinically affected. The fertility records of lame cows were compared with those of the healthy cows nearest in parity and stage of lactation. In the lame cows the interval from calving to first service was four days longer, and the interval from calving to conception was 14 days longer than in the control cows, the pregnancy rate to first service was 46 per cent (controls 56 per cent), 2.14 services were required per conception (controls 1.72) and 16 per cent of lame cows were culled (controls 5 per cent). Lameness, first reported in the period 36 to 70 days after calving, was associated with a significant (P less than 0.01) increase in the interval from calving to first service of eight days; and sole ulceration, in the period 71 to 120 days after calving, was associated with an increase of 11 days (P less than 0.05). Lameness in all periods up to 120 days after calving was associated with significantly increased intervals from calving to conception (P less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Plasma progesterone (P4) profile and estrous detection were used during three experiments to evaluate the effects of exogenous progestogens on the life span of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)-induced corpora lutea (CL) in postpartum (pp) beef cows. Experiment 1 utilized primiparous fall-calving cows (n = 28, trial 1); and spring-calving cows (n = 29, trial 2). On d 18 to 27 pp (d 0) all cows received intravaginal devices containing either P4 or no P4 (NP) for 5 d. On d 5 the devices were removed and calves were either removed (CR) or were present (CP) with half of the cows within steroid group. At 50 h after device removal, 500 micrograms of GnRH was given (iv) to all cows, and weaned calves were reunited with their dams. The induced CL had a normal life span (greater than 16 d) in 17 and 86% (trial 1) and 8 and 79% (trial 2) of NP and P4 cows, respectively. Calf removal did not affect (P greater than .10) the life span of the CL. In Exp. 2, spring-calving multiparous cows (d 18 to 24 pp; d 0) received either no P4 (NP; n = 19), P4 for 6 d via intravaginal devices (P4H; n = 19) or a single im injection of 300 mg P4 (P4 IM; n = 18). At 48 h after device removal or at 8 d after the injection of P4, half of the cows within steroid group received either 500 micrograms GnRH or saline. Corpora lutea had a normal life span in 0, 11, and 80% of NP, P4 IM and P4H cows, respectively, that received GnRH and in 22% of P4-saline cows. In Exp. 3, fall-calving multiparous and primiparous cows (d 25 to 31 pp) received either no progestogen (NP; n = 20), P4 via intravaginal devices for 5 d (P4H; n = 21) or melengestrol acetate (MGA; .5 mg.head-1.d-1 for 5 d orally, n = 15). At 48 d after device removal or at 72 h after the last MGA feeding, all cows received 500 micrograms GnRH. Progesterone post-GnRH injection was increased (greater than 1 ng/ml) at d 7 in 64, 100 and 100%, and remained elevated at d 14 in 11, 46 and 100% of NP, MGA and P4H cows, respectively. For all experiments plasma P4 was increased (range 2 to 5 ng/ml) when the devices containing P4 were in place, then decreased (less than 1 ng/ml) by 48 to 50 h after device removal.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

In order to determine the role of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) on the resumption of ovarian function in cows early postpartum (PP), bovine follicular fluid (FF) was used to selectively suppress concentrations of FSH. Calves were removed from all cows within 24 hr of birth. Follicular fluid that was treated with charcoal to remove steroids (15 ml; n = 14) or serum (S) from an ovariectomized cow (15 ml, n = 14) was injected i.m. twice daily from days 1 to 10 PP. Blood samples were collected before each injection and frequent samples (every 15 min for 6 hr) taken on days 5 and 10 PP. Eight cows from each group (FF and S) were slaughtered on the morning of day 11 PP and pituitaries and ovaries collected. The remaining cows (n = 6) were observed for estrus. Treatment with FF delayed follicular growth (P less than 0.01), as evidenced by the largest follicle per cow observed at time of slaughter (3.6 +/- 0.42 vs 11.5 +/- 1.77 mm dia; FF vs S). The intervals from parturition to first estrus (P less than 0.11) and to first progesterone rise (25.3 +/- 1.97 vs 18.0 +/- 3.62 d; P less than 0.06) tended to be delayed by treatment with FF vs S. Many of the cows treated with S ovulated by day 10 PP, they were divided retrospectively into those that had ovulated by (n = 9) or after (n = 5) day 10 PP for analysis. Cows treated with FF had lower (P less than 0.05) and less variable (P less than 0.01) serum FSH concentrations while levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) tended (P less than 0.08) to be greater on days 5 and 10 PP. Follicular fluid decreased levels of FSH (P less than 0.001), but not LH (P less than 0.15), in the samples obtained twice daily compared to S-treated cows that did not ovulate by day 10 PP. Anterior pituitaries were dissociated, and cells from each cow were cultured in order to ascertain whether treatment with FF in vivo would affect gonadotropin secretion in vitro. Estradiol-17 beta (E) was incubated with pituitary cells to determine the effect of E on gonadotropin secretion from cells of PP cows, and to ascertain whether treatment with FF in vivo and with E in vitro would interact to affect secretion of FSH and LH in culture. After 2 d of incubation, cells were treated with 10(-9) M E or vehicle (1% ethanol).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

This study was designed to determine whether an anti-estrogen can block the negative effect of estrogens on luteinizing hormone (LH) release and therefore decrease the postpartum interval in suckled beef cows. In Exp. I, eight suckled postpartum beef cows were randomly assigned to treatment and control groups. Treatment cows received 1 g/d clomiphene citrate (im) from d 21 to 28 postpartum, while control cows were injected with saline. On d 28 postpartum, there was no difference (P greater than .05) in mean total and basal LH concentrations or LH pulse frequency between treatment and control cows. All control cows exhibited estrus on d 52 +/- 3; treatment cows exhibited estrus on d 134 +/- 12 (P less than .05). In Exp. II, 17 suckled cows were randomly assigned to three treatment groups: 1) control group (n = 6) receiving one empty implant, 2) 10-cm enclomiphene implant group (n = 5) and 3) 30-cm enclomiphene implant group (n = 6). The silastic implants were placed sc on d 20 and removed on d 29 postpartum. Mean total LH concentrations during d 24 to 29 postpartum in the 30-cm enclomiphene implant group were higher than the 10-cm implant (P less than .05) and control group (P less than .05). The postpartum period in the 30-cm enclomiphene group (45 +/- 6 d) was shorter than the 10-cm implant (94 +/- 24 d) and control (96 +/- 20 d) groups (P less than .05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Methods of transferring one bovine embryo to the ipsilateral uterine horn have been compared. In heifers mid-ventral surgical laparotomy under general anaesthesia (n=22) was compared with flank surgery with paravertebral anaesthesia (n=21). Pregnancy rate was higher with a midventral approach (P less than 0.05) (77.3 per cent of 42.9 per cent respectively). In heifers mid-ventral surgery (n=36) was compared with two methods of non-surgical transfer either using the Cassou insemination gun (n=36) or a modification of it (n=39) with embryos collected on days 7, 8 or 10 after oestrus. There were no differences in pregnancy rate between methods or different ages of embryos (methods: 55.6, 55.6, 43.6 per cent respectively; Day: 48.8, 55.8, 48.1 per cent respectively) but the condition score of recipients affected success (P less than 0.05). Of 10 cows which each received an embryo using the modified Cassou gun eight became pregnant.  相似文献

Thirteen multiparous (M; 451 kg, 6.1 body condition score) and 11 primiparous (P) Brahman cows (408 kg, 6.3 body condition score) were assigned randomly within parity to receive either 2-min uterine manipulation (UM) per rectum 35 d after calving or no UM (C). This resulted in four groups: MUM (n = 8), MC (n = 5), PUM (n = 5) and PC (n = 6). All animals received a jugular cannula on d 34. Blood samples were collected at 10-min intervals from 30 min prior to UM until 120 min after UM and at 20-min intervals through 300 min after UM. Plasma was harvested immediately and stored at -20 degrees C until RIA for 13, 14-dihydro-15 keto prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGFM). Number of PGFM peaks in 330 min and amplitude of these peaks were similar (P greater than .10) in MC (2.0 peaks, 445.6 pg/ml) and PC (1.8 peaks, 446.9 pg/ml). Response to UM differed (P less than .02) by parity. The PGFM response of UM and C primiparous cows did not differ. Mean PGFM concentrations between 70 and 300 min after UM were greater (P less than .05) in MUM than in MC cows. Area of the PGFM curve did not differ (P greater than .10) in primiparous groups but was greater (P less than .01) in MUM than in MC cows. Uterine manipulation 35 d after parturition increased plasma PGFM in M but not in P cows.  相似文献

Summary

Puncture of the milk cisterns was performed in 120 bacteriologically positive quarters of forty‐seven lactating dairy cows on three farms. This method was used to determine whether the existing infection was an infection of the teat canal or one of the udder. The results were related to the concentration of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and the cell count in the milk. Of the bacteriologically negative quarters, both BSA levels (in 91 per cent of the quarters the BSA concentration was 0.20 mg. per ml. of milk or less) and cell counts (92 per cent contained less than 500,000 cells per ml. of milk) were low. In cases of udder infection with primary pathogenic bacteria there was a marked increase in cell count (90 per cent more than 500,000 cells per ml. of milk), whereas the increase in BSA was rather small (51 per cent still contained 0.20 mg. BSA per ml. of milk or less). While the difference in cell counts of milk from quarters with udder infections and teat canal infections with primary pathogenic bacteria was significant, the difference between the BSA levels of these two groups was not. Therefore, the cell count supplies more reliable information than does the BSA level of the milk. Of all infections, 23 per cent were found to be infections of the teat canal.  相似文献

The osteogenic activity in the rib bones of 33 dairy cows (14 of parity 1 or 2, and 19 of parity 3 or more) during their last two months of pregnancy, and the effects upon it of a deficient supply of dietary magnesium, were studied by means of intravenous infusions of the fluorochromes oxytetracycline hydrochloride, calcein and chlortetracycline given nine weeks, five weeks and one week, respectively, before the expected time of parturition. Seven weeks before this date the cows' ration was changed to one containing either 0.22 per cent magnesium (LMg) or 0.82 per cent magnesium (HMg) in the dry matter, and the potassium content of both rations was increased to approximately 4.1 per cent in the dry matter to reduce the absorption of magnesium. Four of the 10 LMg-high parity cows showed signs of periparturient hypocalcaemia. A significant decrease in the number of labelled osteons towards parturition was demonstrated in both the low parity (P less than 0.05) and high parity cows (P less than 0.001). The mean bone apposition rate in high parity cows was significantly lower (P less than 0.001) than in low parity cows. The different levels of magnesium in the diets of the cows had no significant effects on the numbers of osteons which were labelled nine weeks, five weeks or one week before parturition, or on the numbers of osteons which took more than one label or on the bone apposition rate. These results show that in these cows the rate of bone remodelling decreased as parturition approached.  相似文献

The prophylactic effect in parturient paresis of an intramuscular injection of 10 million i.u. vitamin D3 one week prior to the expected calving date, was investigated in 84 cows which had previously suffered from parturient paresis. Clinical observations in connection with the development of parturient paresis after injection of vitamin D3 were compared with corresponding observations made on cows within the same population at the previous calving when no vitamin D3 was administered. The incidence of clinical parturient paresis in cows given vitamin D3 was 44.3 per cent. There were no significant differences in the incidence of parturient paresis in cows injected with vitamin D3 during the periods less than 2, 2--4, 5--8 and greater than 8 days before parturition. Average plasma calcium levels (mg/100 ml) before first calcium treatment, results of treatment, and the incidence of retained placenta in vitamin D3 injected cows did not differ significantly from corresponding data for cows with clinical parturient paresis which had not been given vitamin D3 before calving. It is concluded that vitamin D3 does not have any prophylactic effect in parturient paresis in cows in Eastern Norway.  相似文献

Serum concentrations of IGF-I in postpartum beef cows   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Four experiments assessed changes in serum IGF-I under various physiologic conditions in postpartum cows. In Exp. 1, anestrous suckled cows (n = 25) were infused for 6 d with either saline or glucose at two different infusion rates. In Exp. 2, anestrous cows (n = 29) received either a saline (weaned and suckled controls) or 3 g/d phlorizin (weaned phlorizin) infusion for 3 d. Calves from the weaned groups were removed from 15 h before and throughout infusions. In Exp. 3, cycling suckled cows (n = 20) received prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) when the 5-d saline or phlorizin infusion began. In Exp. 4, suckled cows (n = 20) had ad libitum access to feed or received 50% of control feed consumption from 30 to 40 d postpartum. Increasing glucose availability (Exp. 1) increased (P less than .05) serum IGF-I by 30 to 35%. IGF-I remained stable after weaning (Exp. 2) in phlorizin-infused cows (128.8 +/- 12.7 ng/ml), but increased (P less than .05) by 3 d after calf removal in weaned control cows (152.2 +/- 7.5 ng/ml). IGF-I also remained stable in phlorizin-infused cows following PGF2 alpha injection (Exp. 3), but increased in control cows by 2 d after PGF2 alpha (156.8 +/- 18.3 on d 2 vs. 133.7 +/- 9.8 ng/ml pre-injection; P less than .05) and remained elevated (P less than .05) during the periovulatory period. In cows receiving restricted feed intake (Exp. 4), IGF-I decreased by approximately 50% within 4 d of feed restriction (71.3 +/- 9.4 vs 137.4 +/- 16.6 ng/ml; P less than .05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

A two-trial experiment was conducted to determine the influence of ACTH on estrous behavior in cattle. In Trial 1, Holstein heifers (n = 20) received an injection of prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF) during a synchronized diestrus and 30 h later were allotted randomly to receive (i.m.) either 1) 4 mL of gelatin (Veh) or 2) 320 units of ACTH in 4 mL of gelatin (ACTH). Eleven days after the PGF injection, all heifers were again injected with PGF, and they received either Veh or ACTH to complete a cross-over design. Treatment with ACTH decreased (P less than .05) the duration of estrus (12.0 +/- 1.9 vs 18.0 +/- 1.6 h for Veh) and increased (P less than .001) the interval to estrus after PGF injection (62.9 +/- 2.6 vs 43.7 +/- 2.2 h for Veh). Peak serum concentrations of progesterone (P4) and cortisol (C) were elevated (P less than .001) after ACTH compared with Veh. In Trial 2, ovariectomized Holstein cows (n = 12) were injected (i.m.) with .5 mg of estradiol benzoate (EB) and, 10 h later, were allotted randomly to receive (i.m.) either 1) 4 mL of gelatin (Veh) or 2) 320 units of ACTH in 4 mL of gelatin (ACTH). Seven days after the initial EB injection, all cows were again injected with .5 mg of EB and, 10 h later, received either Veh or ACTH to complete a cross-over design. Treatment with ACTH decreased (P less than .01) the proportion of cows in estrus (2/12 vs 11/12 for Veh) and increased (P less than .01) peak serum concentrations of P4 and C.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Three groups of beef cow and calf pairs were studied to determine plasma vitamin E and blood selenium (Se) concentrations of calves at 1 month old. Group 1 was managed on irrigated pasture and calves received no Se/vitamin E injections at birth. Group 2 was managed on irrigated pasture, and the calves were injected with Se/vitamin E at birth. Group 3 was managed on dry foothill grasslands, and these cows were supplemented with 56.3 mg vitamin E and 3 mg Se daily, and the calves received a Se/vitamin E injection at birth. The plasma concentration of vitamin E in group 1 and 2 cows (9.5 +/- 1.24 and 8.43 +/- 1.0 microg/ml, respectively) was significantly higher than that of the group 3 cows (2.28 +/- 0.42 microg/ml; P < 0.05). The blood Se concentrations in group 3 cows (169 +/- 37 ng/ml) were significantly higher than those in group 1 and 2 cows (36.4 +/- 15.9 and 31.1 +/- 12.5 ng/ml, respectively; P < 0.05). Calf Se was highly correlated to cow Se (r = 0.965), and calf vitamin E was moderately correlated to cow vitamin E (r = 0.605). Calf vitamin E concentrations were consistently lower than cow vitamin E concentrations, and many values would be considered deficient.  相似文献

A possible role for endogenous opioid peptides (EOP) in the control of luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin (PRL) secretion was studied by injecting the opioid antagonist, naloxone (NAL), into postpartum ewes and cows. Twelve ewes that lambed during the fall breeding season and nursed their lambs were injected iv with NAL (1.0 mg/kg) on d 10, 14, 18, 22 and 26 postpartum. Blood samples were collected at 15-min intervals from 2 h before to 2 h after NAL, and serum concentrations of LH and PRL were quantified. Following treatment on d 10, suckling lambs were removed from 6 of the 12 ewes, creating non-suckled (NS) and suckled (S) treatment groups for subsequent study on d 14 through 26. On d 10, NAL treatment increased LH (P less than .01) but concentrations of PRL were not affected. When averaged across d 14 to 26, post-NAL concentrations of LH were greater (P less than .001) than pre-NAL concentrations (6.5 +/- .7 vs 1.9 +/- .4 ng/ml). In contrast, concentrations of PRL in the post-NAL period were lower (P less than .001) than pre-NAL concentrations (129 +/- 15 vs 89 +/- 10 ng/ml). Compared with S ewes over d 14 to 26, those in the NS group had similar pre-NAL concentrations of LH, tendencies for higher (P less than .10) post-NAL concentrations of LH, lower (P less than .001) mean serum concentrations of PRL (pre- and post-NAL) and similar pre-NAL vs post-NAL differences in serum PRL. Six suckled beef cows on d 24 to 35 were injected iv with either saline or NAL (.5 mg/kg) in a replicated crossover design. Injections of NAL increased serum concentrations of LH (P less than .05), when averaged over all 12 injections in the six cows, but serum PRL was not changed. However, three of six cows did not respond to NAL with increases in serum LH. These non-responding cows were similar to the responding cows in their pre-injection concentrations of LH and PRL, but they tended (P = .10) to have higher serum concentrations of cortisol than responding cows.  相似文献

A group of 60 housed Friesian cows were observed continuously for a period of 25 days, during which time all cows were recorded for incidence of mounting activity and 18 selected cows were recorded for various aspects of maintenance activity. All 60 cows were judged as showing oestrus. Average duration of oestrus (+/-SD) in 33 cows was 14-9 +/- 4-7 hours, and the cows were mounted 56-3 +/- 34-8 times. The greatest mounting activity was associated with the night hours. There was no diurnal pattern of onset of oestrus. The majority of mounting activity (79 per cent) occurred in the cubicle area of the building. Comparison of maintenance activities showed that oestrous cows spent, on average, less time standing in a cubicle (P less than 0-01), lying in a cubicle (P less than 0-001) and more time standing elsewhere (P less than 0-001) than non-oestrous cows. The results are discussed in relation to oestrus detection.  相似文献
