Greening of potato (Solarium tuberosum L.) tubers is often a problem in retail markets. An experiment was performed to study the mode of inheritance of tuber greening in 24-chromosome potatoes. Tuber greening was determined to be quantitatively inherited. Genetic and environmental variance components were calculated. Tuber greening inheritance is due to additive and epistatic effects. Epistatic effects accounted for 59% of the genetic variance. No dominance or maternal effects were observed. Narrow sense heritability was 0.27 and broad sense heritability was 0.66 after location, block, and genotype by environment interactions were removed. Broad sense heritability for tuber greening is large enough to permit effective selection against tuber greening in potato breeding programs when epistasis can be fixed.  相似文献

Abscisic acid (ABA), sucrose, reducing sugars and proline contents were monitored over an eleven-month period in tubers of three potato cultivars that varied in tuber dormancy. ABA and proline levels increased after top pulling the haulms and were not affected by harvest date. Proline did not change in either a storage temperature or cultivar-specific manner. The highest concentrations of ABA were found in tubers stored at 2°C while the lowest concentrations occurred in tubers stored at 20°C. At 10°C, the end of tuber dormancy in the cultivars Kennebec and Nooksack (but not Sebago) coincided with the decline in ABA content. There was no evidence of a threshold concentration of ABA below which sprouting would occur. Tuber samples of 10 different cultivars were removed from 10°C and placed in 20°C storage (in darkness). Initial ABA concentrations (i.e., at the time of removal from 10°C storage) were positively correlated with duration of dormancy and negatively correlated with subsequent rates of sprout elongation at 20°C. Sucrose content was negatively correlated with duration of dormancy. Reducing sugars responded primarily to storage temperature and did not appear to be related to dormancy or sprouting.  相似文献

The use of a pressure chamber for measurements of water potential of potato (Solatium tuberosum L.) in leaves and tubers is described. For satisfactory results, evaporation from samples must be prevented prior to and during measurements, and samples must be measured quickly following detachment. Tubers were suspended in the chamber by their rhizomes for water potential measurements. Tuber water potentials appeared too low (dry) when rates of pressurization exceeded 0.05 bar sec1 as the balancing pressure was approached (within 2 bars). Variations in measurements associated with the rhizome length, and with lack of equilibrium within the tuber, are discussed. Field measurements showed that under moderate to high transpiration, there was no simple relationship between leaf and tuber water potentials. In wet soil, tubers were wetter than leaves throughout the day. In dry soil, tuber potentials became as dry as those of leaves by the afternoon. Factors contributing to this changing pattern are discussed.  相似文献

Tuber resistance toPhytophthora infestans was studied in relation to physiological age in tubers of the cultivars Atzimba, Katahdin, Kennebec, and Sebago. Resistance to race1,2,3,4 was evaluated in freshly harvested tubers, and tubers stored at 5 C for up to 215 days. Atzimba tubers were highly resistant when freshly harvested but became increasingly susceptible as they aged physiologically. Tubers of the other three cultivars were susceptible when freshly harvested and also when aged. Further, 57 tuber selections from among 11 crosses initially gave resistant reactions. However, after storage for six months at 5 C, 26.3% of the selections remained resistant, 22.8% were moderately resistant, 31.6% moderately susceptible, and 19.3% fully susceptible.  相似文献

Coastal Russet (tested as B9596-2) is a clone with mid-season maturity that produces russet skin tubers that are long and slightly flattened. Tuber yields in the eastern portions of the United States have been considerably greater than for BelRus. Tubers are well-shaped, have shallow eyes, and are attractive in appearance. Tuber appearance and size make this cultivar very well suited for the tablestock market. It is not suitable for processing. Coastal Russet is highly resistant to tuber net necrosis caused by late current season infection with leafroll and is tolerant to common scab.  相似文献

A survey of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) plant stands in upstate New York over a three-year period showed that the average distance between plants was 4 cm wider than intended. Plant stands averaged 83%. The failure to plant seed pieces was the major reason for missing hills. Seed rot was not generally a problem, although one field in the survey was severely affected. Speed of planting up to 6.7 km/h had no consistent effect on average spacing or uniformity of seed piece distribution. Seed type (whole or cut) and mechanical condition of planter influenced spacing. Experiments conducted over four years indicated that the non-uniform seed piece distribution delivered by commercial picker-arm planters does not adversely affect crop yield or tuber size. Non-uniform seed distribution with extremely high coefficients of variation (greater than 100%), however, affected yield, tuber size and tuber number. Tuber numbers and yields were decreased by reducing the number of seed pieces planted per unit area whether or not the pieces were uniformly spaced.  相似文献

Two methods of determining susceptibility of potato clones to blackspot were compared: (1) bruising by weight dropping and (2) bruising by abrasive peeling. A highly significant positive correlation was obtained between the intensity of enzymatic discoloration following abrasive peeling and the amount of blackspot that developed by weight dropping (r=0.93). Abrasive peeling was more rapid than the weight-dropping method. Tuber samples were abraded 30 sec and the amount of enzymatic discoloration evaluated after 24 hr. The need for individually bruising and hand peeling of tubers was eliminated with this method. Because of the rapidity of the abrasive peeling method, it can be used effectively in potato breeding programs to screen large numbers of clones for blackspot susceptibility. Results indicate that tuber maturity affects enzymatic discoloration and blackspot susceptibility. Immature tubers, dug while the vines are still green, are more resistant to blackspot than mature tubers. Tuber maturity therefore must be considered when screening clones for susceptibility to blackspot.  相似文献

Potato tubers became infected byAlternaria solani at the time of harvest. Infection occurred only on wounded tubers irrespective of their depth in the soil. The presence of free moisture on unwounded tubers did not increase the incidence of infection, and immature unwounded tubers were not susceptible. Tuber infections may be reduced by allowing tubers to fully mature before harvest or possibly, by applying chemicals to the soil surface.  相似文献

Tuber discs of potato (Solanum tuberosum) growing on a modified Murashige and Skoog medium produced callus and embryoid bodies but failed to form shoots. However, if 0.4 ppm of 6-benzylaminopurine was added to the basal medium, shoots became visible seven weeks after inoculation.  相似文献

Russet Burbank and WC230-14 potato tubers were stored at 0 C (32 F) and 5 C (41 F) in air, air plus 4% CO2 and air plus 8% CO2 for a 175 day storage period. Four times during this period, tubers were removed and inoculated withErwinia carotovora var.atroseptica (van Hall) Dye orFusarium roseum var.sambucinum (L. K.) Sn. and H. and stored at 17 C (62.6 F). Tuber samples were also reconditioned for two weeks at 17C(62.6 F) and then inoculated. Tubers were evaluated for rate of membrane permeability, free glucose, free fructose, and sucrose content and the rate of tuber decay by the two pathogens. Relative to 5 C (41 F), 0 C (32 F) storage increased sugar content, membrane permeability and the rate of tuber breakdown. Increasing CO2 during storage at 0 C (32 F) and 5 C (41 F) increased each of the above parameters. Reconditioning tended to alleviate the adverse effects of 0 C (32 F) storage and increasing CO2 levels, but varietal differences existed. A significant and high correlation was obtained between the rate ofErwinia decay, membrane permeability, and sucrose content of the tubers.  相似文献

The factors affecting potato tuber weight loss were studied by suspending individual tubers of Kennebec, Red Pontiac, and Norgold Russet potatoes in chambers where temperature, relative humidity, and air flow past the tubers could be controlled. The results of a regression analysis indicated that the age of the tubers closely followed by temperature was most highly correlated to weight loss. Tuber weight and relative humidity were next and about equally correlated with weight loss. Air velocity had the lowest correlation coefficient Prediction equations for predicting the weight loss of the potato tubers as a function of the various environmental and potato tuber variables were developed from a step-wise regression analysis program. The standard error for these regression equations was about ±1.5% weight loss from the predicted value The weight loss of the tubers in this experiment are likely higher than bulk stored potatoes because of the greater surface area exposed to air flow. Also, other than temperature, the other variables (air velocity, relative humidity, and potato weight) were relatively uncontrolled and therefore had high variations. A plot of weight loss versus time indicates a non-linear response with greater variation as time increases.  相似文献

‘Russet Burbank’ potatoes (Solarium tuberosum L.) were subjected to various levels of water application during the growing season. Water applied, rainfall, and soil water changes were measured at weekly intervals. Tuber yield and quality increased as water consumption increased from 300 mm to 650 mm. Evapotranspiration (ET) increased rapidly from plant emergence until early tuber bulking and declined gradually as plants matured. Comparing ET with pan evaporation provided coefficients (K) which changed in response to crop growth stages. K increased from 0.3 at emergence to over 0.8 during maximum leaf area and declined with crop maturity. The relationship between K and crop growth stage can be used with confidence in scheduling irrigation of potatoes in north central Oregon.  相似文献

Distribution of cortical, perimedullary, and pith tissues and total solids content were determined on both a fresh and a dry weight basis for six potato cultivars grown concurrently in three locations in California. At one location, tubers harvested 80 days from planting were 1.0 to 2.5% lower in total solids than tubers harvested at later dates. The high solids cortical tissues ranged from 39 to 51% of whole tubers on a dry basis, and the amount appeared to be related to tuber shape. White Rose and Red LaSoda showed greater difference in per cent total solids between cortical and perimedullary tissues than did Kennebec, Lenape,3 Norchip, and Russet Burbank. The high total solids of the cortical tissues is particularly significant to processing losses. Any method of peeling that removes one half the linear depth of the cortical tissues can result in a loss of 25% or more of total tuber solids, depending upon cultivar and tuber shape. Tuber development and distribution of total solids and other components were previously described for Red Pontiac, Russet Burbank, and White Rose tubers obtained from the retail market (6,9,10,11). It was particularly noted that the high-solids cortical tissues, although averaging only about 6mm in depth, comprised between 40 and 50% of both fresh and dry tuber weights (6,11). Because this sort of distribution of solids is especially significant to peeling loss, possible differences in solids among cultivars and at different harvest dates were investigated.  相似文献

Vine pulling as a means of top killing potatoes was evaluated by measuring tuber discolouration, desiccation of stems and leaves, stems missed and rerooted, and tubers exposed during pulling. Tuber discolouration ratings determined for potatoes that had been top killed in mid-August by chemical desiccant, rotobeating or vine pulling, remained low during the four-year study except in 1978 with the chemical desiccant. Machine pulling evaluations indicated effective vine kill to be rated at 89–99% for leaves and 79–98% for stems with several cultivars of potatoes. A number of stems rerooted which reduced the vine kill ratings.  相似文献

The inception site of hollow heart (HH) and possible relationships between HH and physiological or anatomical characteristics of tubers were investigated. Scanning electron micrographs revealed cells at the site of HH inception were physically rather than enzymatically degraded. Transmission electron micrographs of tuber pith cells from non hollow (NH) tubers showed cell wall and cytoplasm width varied among cultivars but were not related to HH resistance. Water potential of NH tuber tissues at the pith, bud, center and stem end of 3 cultivars and one selection varying in resistance to HH was determined. Although the water potential gradually became less negative as tubers advanced in maturity, no differences were found in water potential between pith cells in various parts of tubers or among cultivars. Tuber pith cells increased in size concomitant with tuber growth. In all tubers pith cells were largest in the center and stem end and smallest in the bud end, but differences in mean pith cell size among cultivars were not related to HH susceptibility. However, within a cultivar the bud, center, and stem end pith cells of HH tubers were all smaller than the corresponding pith cells from similarly sized NH tubers.  相似文献

A graft transmissible disease of potato termed purple top roll is prevalent in several potato varieties grown in the hilly tracts of India. The common symptoms are rolling of the basal parts of younger leaves, sometimes accompanied by pink or purple pigmentation. The plants are stunted with profuse growth of axillary branches and aerial tubers. The losses in yield varied from 40 to 70%. Five to 20% of the tubers from diseased plants developed hairy sprouts. Tuber transmission of the pathogen varied from 6 to 33%, depending on the variety.Datura, tomato and white clover are among susceptible plants.N. rustica was tolerant or a symptomless carrier. Sunnhemp, Petunia andSesamum were immune to the pathogen, which was transmitted by the leaf hopper,O. albicinctus Distant but not byCuscuta spp. or by sap inoculation. Application of Chloramphenicol, Tetracycline and Antiamoebin resulted in remission of symptoms and increased tuber yields, indicating possible association of a mycoplasma-like organism.  相似文献

The photoperiodic behaviour of 18 potato clones from three taxonomic groups (Andigena, Phureja, and Tuberosum diploid and tetraploid) was studied under controlled environments. Day lengths of 11, 13, 15, and 17 hours were provided with all other environmental conditions common. Six characters were studied: tuber formation, stem height, haulm weight, tuber number, tuber weight, and tuberization efficiency (tuber weight/haulm weight). All clones showed well defined critical daylength values at which tuberization was either absent or irregular. A wide variability for critical day length was observed among clones, the higher values corresponding to Tuberosum tetraploid and the lower values to the Phureja group. Stem height and haulm weight increased as photoperiod increased. Tuber number remained practically the same for all groups but Phureja which showed an inverse relationship. Tuber weight decreased as daylength increased for the groups Andigena, Phureja, and Tuberosum diploid which on the average showed a short day reaction for tuber yield. Tuberosum tetraploid did not show any significant change, behaving as a day neutral type. Tuberization efficiency was, in general, decreased as daylength increased suggesting a short day behaviour for all groups. A regression analysis of tuber yield and tuberization efficiency on photoperiod indicated that, in general, tetraploid genotypes were less sensitive to drastic increases in daylength than diploids.  相似文献

Castile is a golden nematode Race A (Globodera rostochiensis) resistant potato variety with the potential to produce high marketable yields of attractive tubers suitable for tablestock and processing. Tubers are oblong to long, slightly flattened with a smooth white skin and moderately shallow eyes. Vines of this variety are large, providing a dense canopy, and require a full growing season similar to that needed for Katahdin. Timely irrigation produces high marketable yields, stress conditions can limit yields. Specific gravity in New York State averages 0.005 above Katahdin and 0.009 below Atlantic. Tuber flesh is bright white. Baking and french fry quality is good. Chip color, when tubers are stored at 10 C for 120 days, is equivalent to Atlantic. Castile is resistant to corky ring spot, pinkeye, and moderately resistant to Fusarium rot.  相似文献

Plots of Russet Burbank, Nampa, Targhee, and A6371-2 received O, 250, and 500 lb of potash (K2O/A as KC1 or K2SO4). Tubers were bruised following harvest. Potash treatment had no significant effect in reducing blackspot development when there was no yield response to K fertilization. On soil that tested low for K, potash treatment significantly reduced blackspot development for all four cultivars. Tuber subsamples were bruised after 6 mo in storage at either 1.7 or 10 C. Differences in blackspot bruise development between low and high K were maintained for those tubers stored at 10 C; differences were not maintained and little discoloration developed in tubers stored at 1.7 C, due perhaps to less enzyme activity and less substrate. The Nampa cultivar was significantly more resistant to blackspot than the other three cultivars.  相似文献

A water culture technique was developed for the study of the nutrient requirements of the potato plant. Tuber formation was avoided by pinching off the stolons as they developed and hence vegetative growth could be studied without the complication of abnormal tuber formation in the culture solution. The K deficiency symptoms obtained by this method were essentially the same as those observed for field grown plants.  相似文献
